A Little Bit of History By Judy Hodgson

T

he Wedding Guide 2010 Magazine, the one you hold in your hands, has certainly grown to maturity over the years. In fact, you might say its roots go back decades. Let me explain. In 1981 I started working as a reporter for the Arcata Union newspaper and became editor two years later. In addition to news and feature writing, occasionally we wrote stories for special sections of the paper like Annie and Mary Days in Blue Lake or the Orick Rodeo. Carolyn Fernandez, also a co-owner of the Journal today, was a graphic artist at the time and worked in the Union’s back shop doing paste-up – literally applying hot wax to the back of pieces of copy and photos, and pasting them down on a board. During that era, the Union published an annual special section to help brides and grooms plan their big day. We wrote some helpful stories and then the advertising department went out and sold ads. The problem with this approach was couples only got information about those specific stories we ran that year and certain advertisers — really a fraction of the people who are in the wedding biz here in Humboldt County. The North Coast Journal was launched in 1990 and soon after Carolyn and I began publishing a bridal directory – basically a complete listing by categories of everyone in the wedding business — every local cake baker, every consultant, every DJ. It was so useful to wedding couples because, let’s face it, there’s a new crop every year. You only do this big family party once in your life (hopefully) and you need all the help you can get. We had tremendous support from advertisers from

the beginning, those who wanted to show photos of their work and to describe their services and products in more detail. Today some of them tell us the Wedding Guide brings them half or more of their customers. By 2006, the directory expanded to a full-color, glossy magazine with that all-important checklist in the back to make it even easier to plan a big event. This year we are using our new, expanded website – www.northcoastjournal.com — to take the Wedding Guide a few important steps further. One, I can tell you about now: We are archiving all our older stories for easy access on-line. Old stories and photos? How will this help you? Well, let me tell you. In 2006 we interviewed Meredith Biasca (See, “Party Girl,” 2006 Wedding Guide) about wedding planning. She and her husband now own Don’s Rent-All, but at the time she had been managing the Party Place for many, many years. She knows the wedding business from the inside out. She gave us lots of good ideas – from trends in linens to how to set up a kids’ corner during the reception to keep them occupied. Also in the 2006 Wedding Guide edition were local stories about choosing a ring and choosing music. Remember, these stories are all Humboldt-specific, not those found in general interest brides’ magazines. The 2007 edition will always be my favorite. I have to declare a conflict-of-interest because my second job has always been helping in my family business, the Fieldbrook Winery. I have been doing weddings in my back yard almost as long as I’ve been in journalism. The story I wrote that year was very personal. It’s about the three very different weddings of our three daughters – in the years 1993, 1997 and 2006. I talk about how to pit-roast a pig (have friends in 4-H), how to find a certain satin gown

and where to procure flowers in just the right shade of deep red. That year we also had an article that will always be helpful to anyone throwing a large party called, “How to Feed the Hungry Hordes,” an interview with Elizabeth Adams of Hurricane Kate’s. Finally, we had a sweet feature story on “Operation: Romance in the Redwoods. How to have a wedding in 72 hours.” In 2008 we had articles on counseling before marriage, when and how to hire a wedding planner, the magic of the wedding dress and a special article on flowers. Last year, the 2009 Wedding Guide, had feature articles on Sandra Kirtley, owner of Scrappers Edge, talking about invitations and papercraft; dozens of fantastic photos on cakes, all by local bakers; and a trend story about making your wedding very personal. There’s so much good information just a mouse click away. Stay tuned for another major upgrade to our mothership, the North Coast Journal’s website, later this year. And tell the advertisers you find on these pages where you found them and how much you appreciate their support of this local magazine. ● INS IDE ◆

I

t was more than 15 years ago that she first noticed him in high school. Over the years, they worked together and eventually started dating. Then on Oct. 17, Melody and Todd DeHaven were married. Sitting on the couch in their comfortable Arcata home, the couple, who finish each other’s sentences, agreed: They are fortunate not only to have married the person of their dreams but to have had their dream wedding, too. Following their engagement in September 2008, Melody started reading wedding books and magazines and they all said the same

thing: The first step in planning a wedding is to determine your budget. “Well, what do you do when you don’t really have any money?” Melody asked. Todd, 36, who grew up in Arcata, has worked for Murphy’s Market in Sunny Brae for the past 20 years and is now the produce manager. Melody moved from San Diego in time to attend Arcata High School and works part-time as a cashier at Murphy’s Market. She also cleans houses and is a caregiver. Though they had no defined budget, the couple started discussing what they really wanted and slowly their perfect wedding emerged. “We went back and forth between being

traditional and non-traditional. We kind of ended up with both,” Todd said. “We stayed away from bridal stuff,” said Melody, adding that that was a big money saver. “We knew we didn’t want to be cake toppers.” Not wanting to look like the traditional “cake topper” wedding couple, helped contribute to one of the biggest money-saving choices — her dress. While she has seen her friends look amazing walking down the aisle in traditional long, flowing white dresses, Melody said that was never her preference. She went shopping and eventually found a deep purple dress from a small boutique. With the help of her best friend, Melody, she also decided to do her own nails and hair for the wedding. “Once she got the dress, everything just kind of tied into it,” Todd said. Looking for an affordable wedding venue that they could make their own and also being lovers of theater, the DeHavens chose the Arcata Playhouse. By choosing an unusual venue and the “whimsical” dress, the wedding began to take on a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” feel. Family members and friends began to join in the planning, offering to share their talents, ranging from singing to storytelling to magic tricks. The wedding theme continued to evolve. “It was kind of a-night-on-the-town theme,” Todd said. “Simple elegance was another theme of the night,” Melody added. While the couple had ideas on how they wanted their wedding to play out, Melody said they stayed open and let many aspects of the event unfold. “We weren’t really attached to anything, which saved us a lot of money,” she said. Starting from the very beginning, the couple saved money on their invitations by having Melody’s artistic mother design them. They

had color copies made and purchased a large package of envelopes and stamps. The total for the 160 invitations? $100 — and that included postage. The couple toyed with a few other locations before visiting the Arcata Playhouse. But by choosing a venue that is typically not used for weddings, they were able to negotiate a good price and rent it for a several days. That made it possible for them to take their time decorating and it alleviated the need to hire decorators. Not only was the theater a blank canvas for them to make their own, Melody said, “Theaters just have a really cool feel.” Plus, it was the perfect venue for their “night out” theme. The couple found theater owners David Ferney and Jackie Dandeneau easy to work with, they even did all the lighting for the wedding. While the couple did everything it could to save money, the biggest cost savings came from the help of family and many friends. White paper lanterns that lined the aisles were made by the couple with the help of Melody’s mother. One friend borrowed some decorative material from a local clothing store where she works to drape behind the altar and the top of the stage. Another friend brought moss-covered alder branches from a tree in his yard.

The food, a spread of beautifully presented hors’ d oeuvres, was all made by a relative and the couple was able to borrow most of the tables and dishes from the Lutheran Church of Arcata. Beer and wine was served to guests utilizing a friend’s bartending expertise. And for entertainment? There was music for dancing and various performances by guests and family, including Melody’s father and brother who wrote and performed songs. A friend played piano for the ceremony, Todd’s mother wrote and read a story. The wedding was officiated by Melody’s aunt. The couple purchased local flowers and yet another friend, a Murphy’s Market flower manager, did the arranging, making beautiful bouquets. Also easing the financial burden on everyone, the couple decided to keep the wedding party small. “Her sister was her maid-of-honor and my son was my best man,” Todd said. The favors were packets of wildflower seeds gifted to them by friends at the Jonsteen Company in McKinleyville. For the rehearsal dinner, the couple rented the Samoa Women’s Club, which they said was inexpensive. For dinner, all the couple had to do was purchase the ingredients and the deli manager at Murphy’s Market, another close friend of theirs, made enough sushi for everyone. While they saved money on every-

thing else, Melody and Todd said there were a few things they had professionally done. “Besides having the videographer and the photographer, our cake was our only splurge,” Melody said. Todd said it was important for them to have a nice wedding cake to share with friends. Because everyone had done so much, they wanted them all to share in the cake. With friends pitching in to help them save money and execute their wedding, the couple said the event became something they will never forget. “My mantra for the whole time was, ‘It’s the marriage, not the wedding,’” Melody said. But it turned out the wedding was a huge success. “I think it was about as perfect as it could be,” Todd said. “Really, of the whole night, there is nothing that we would have done differently,” Melody agreed.

Melody’s money saving tips • Stay away from items specified as “bridal.” It is not unusual to find the same item for less if it doesn’t have the “bridal” designation. • Alternative venues can save major money. • Look to churches and other community venues that may let you borrow or rent tables, chairs and even dishes and flatware for little or no cost. • Are you creative or do you have a creative friend? Making your own invitations and decorations can save money. • Having a small wedding party saves your friends money, too. • Are your friends and family talented? Would they love to be a part of your wedding? “Letting people express their talents really saves a lot,” Melody said. l

Kambria says she is seeing mini veils with polka dots that just barely cover the hair and eyes. “It looks very dramatic.” Other custom hair accessories incorporate heirloom pieces of jewelry, beads, lace or “even parts of grandma’s dress.” “Definitely, the heirloom look is in. And lots of feathers,” she added. Aimee Taylor has been making custom hairpieces for about two years under the name Jeez Louise. She is launching a webpage soon to sell over the internet, but for the time being she sells her products where she works at Shipwreck in Eureka, a retail store specializing in anything from handmade clothing and furniture to suitcases. “I’m really inspired by the vintage look, especially the ’40s and ’50s,” Aimee said. “I use old lace and even buttons.” She says fashion still goes in cycles and right now feathers are big. Jennifer Wilson, a photographer and a bride herself last year, agrees that hair accessories are a trend. “A lot of brides are going for something edgier. Right now you see a lot of small head pieces — tiny veils, netting and feathers — in all the ads for wedding gowns,” she said. But, for her own wedding last August, Jennifer chose the traditional veil in all its glory. “People were hugging me in the receiving line and pulling the veil back. It’s just that I’ve always loved the look of the veil, so I went with it.” l

ome brides feel self conscious wearing a long veil. They look great in formal wedding photos and, after all — it’s tradition — but they also can get in the way a lot and restrict movement. One trend noted by area photographers is replacing the traditional veil with flowers or more recently, custom hair accessories. “Brides are a lot freer to move with hair accessories,” says Kambria Anton of Eyelight Photography. “I’ve seen brides getting their heads pulled back by the weight of a long veil, or the husband getting tangled up during the receiving line. It adds to the stress and they’re not relaxed. It frees them up to move normally.”

Wedding registries Fine china and crystal a thing of the past? By Christine Bensen-Messinger

W

hile not completely gone, the days where all couples register for fine China and crystal that they may never use seem to be numbered. according to “experts,” at the WeddingChannel.com, “the top 10 registry items for Couples Just starting out,” include flatware, everyday use dinnerware, glasses, pots and pans and other kitchen and cooking related items. But, with more and more couples setting up shop long before they get married, these items, while still popular, are being supplemented and in some instances replaced by registries at home building centers, travel agencies for honeymoons, and even more unique places. For the past, at least six years, Cindy gerner, who runs the accounts receivable department at Pierson’s Building Center in eureka, said the store has offered a registry service. “Not many people know we offer this,” she said. But, with so many couples choosing to buy homes together before getting married, it can be a good place to register. gift cards top the list of the most popular items to register for, gerner said, but there are other things as well. “there’s a lot of lighting on the

lists,” she said. “and electrical (is also popular) … once in awhile we see something from the garden section; like specific plants.” another store that offers a registry that is not widely known about is good relations in old town eureka. “We call it our fairy files,” said meghan riley, a co-manager and sex educator at the shop. riley said between 30 and 40 couples a year register at the “lovers’ boutique” which specializes in lingerie and boudoir accessories. While employees at the shop are happy to help couples register and explain to them what different products are so they can decide what will be best for them, riley said they are also happy to help guests who come to make a purchase from the registry. “i’ll walk around with them … and show them this is what they wanted so that can choose what to buy,” she said. “it depends on what road they want to take (as to what they choose to purchase); some people like to be risqué.” For others, who are looking for home décor option items that are unique, Plaza design also offers a registry at all three locations, arcata, eureka and mcKinleyville. “We get online registries as well as in store,” said tracy morgan, who manages the arcata location. last year, she said approximately 60 couples registered with the store.

With an array of furniture, local art, Fire and light glassware, made from recycled glass, and other household decorations and odds and ends, couples have many options to choose from. But, morgan said there are definitely favorites. “sometimes you’ll see linens or candles, sometimes furniture or gift cards, (but) one of the most popular things is the Fire and light,” she said. “that’s number one.” While their online registry (at plazad.com) makes it easy for couples to register in the comfort

of their own home, she said the in-store help that Plaza design employees offer is something that sets them apart from registering at bigger establishments. “the customer service we provide … we like to walk around with the couple … and clarify exactly what it is they do want so there are no misunderstandings,” morgan said. she said it’s also nice for couples to register for a variety of things so that their guests have choices when purchasing the gift. eureka residents Jamie lee and continued on page 26 ➤

Wedding Registries continued from page 24

B.J. Thomason registered at a few places for their June 13 wedding, their favorite being Plaza Design. “It was really important to me being born and raised here to pick somewhere local,” Jamie said. “Plaza Design was a place that I always thought of … because they have Fire and Light.” Her mother-in-law really wanted the couple to register for china, but Jamie said they knew they would never use it. Instead, Fire and Light was the better choice because it is “beautiful” and something they can use every day, she said. “We’ve been able to keep our collection growing,” she said, adding that they received a few pieces for Christmas and each received more on their birthdays. Originally registering for 12 full place setting, Jamie said their collection is 98 percent complete. Not only are they happy with their choice, Jamie said the people at Plaza Design were helpful in the registering experience,

which can be complicated. “They were amazing,” she said. “They were so patient.” Debbie Sanders who manages Dalianes World Wide Travel Service in Eureka said honeymoon registries have become popular in recent years. “We do offer a honeymoon registry, all of (the couples) friends can come in and make a donation toward their honeymoon,” she said. “This can be great for (couples) who didn’t think they could afford a honeymoon or have lived together a longtime.” Sanders said the staff at Dalianes will help couples book their travel arrangements, which they can pay for at the time and then give them a check with the donated money and a print out of who contributed and how much they gave. Recently, Sanders said a couple registered for their honeymoon with Dalianes and then didn’t come in to find out what was gifted to them until after. “People gave money until the wedding (and) they had a chunk of change waiting for them when

they got back,” she said. “It does work out really nice.” Allison and Daniel Bensen, who got married in a small family wedding in November, chose not to register for gifts at the time. But, sometime next year they are planning to have a reception dinner and to register for a honeymoon, something they have been unable to take thus far. “We’re thinking about taking a cruise since we’ve already made a home together,” Allison said. The couple, who has lived together for more than three years, and have a 7-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son, said they would like to take the trip sans children and decided to put the honeymoon off until their son is a little older. While they are not sure of the exact location, Allison said they would like to go somewhere Caribbean. She has looked at honeymoon registry services online, but said she is planning to use a local travel agency to book their trip. l

more and more couples are foregoing traditional registries and registering for lingerie, honeymoons and furniture.

Daniel Bensen is the brother of Christine Bensen-Messinger.
