North Coast Open Studios is a DreamMaker project of the Ink People Center for the Arts, and is supported by Humboldt County artists, businesses, and community members like you. NCOS would not be possible without the generous support of many people. First and foremost, thank you to all of the artists who reached out and patiently waited to see if NCOS would return after a two-year pandemic-induced hiatus, then distributed posters and guidebooks throughout the community. Thank you to the Ink People’s new Executive Director (and welcome!) Leslie Castellano, who encouraged me to get the event rolling, even if the timelines were very tight by the time I felt safe doing so. And of

course thanks to recently retired Executive Director Libby Maynard, who not only supported my leadership of North Coast Open Studios since 2014, but the various incarnations of leadership prior to me since the late ’90s. Thank you to my partner, Robot Adams, who fed me snacks and hydration, and kept me grounded and supported when all of the deadlines and tiny moving pieces felt a little overwhelming during this year’s very short event season. Thank you to our Guidebook Layout Goddess, Holly Harvey at the North Coast Journal, for designing this beautiful publication on a very tight deadline this year. Thanks to Morse Media for the website hosting and the 101 Things Publication for the use of their

wonderful maps, year after year. Thanks so much to David and Karen Mast for hanging the NCOS Art Show in the Ink People’s new Brenda Tuxford Gallery at 627 3rd Street in Old Town Eureka. Such pros! And thank you to Jay Tilghman, digital media mentor of the Ink People’s MARZ Project, for designing our poster, and Ink People administrative assistant (and participating poet!) Jenny Downs for helping with data entry. This event couldn’t happen without all of you! — Monica Topping Coordinator & Participating Artist, North Coast Open Studios

listed regionally from North to South. Browse through to discover the artists you wish to visit. Check the maps, shown with each community listing, to find studios based on location. Looking for a specific artist? Check the Alphabetical index on page 31. Each artist listing has general information about the artist, including an image of their work, the type of artwork they create, art categories (for the Visitor BINGO game on page 7), directions to their studio, contact information, and which weekend (or weekends) they will be open. Artist listings also tell you whether or not the studio is wheelchair accessible (wheelchair logo) and if the artist is requiring visitors to wear a mask (mask logo). Listings without a mask icon may still require visitors to mask up before entering – they’ll let you know when you arrive. At the end of the artist listings is a special section of artists who will not be open during either Open Studios weekend, but are open by appointment only, year-round. Also, if you can’t visit an artist during their open weekend, keep in mind that many artists enjoy visitors, and most will open their studios by appointment throughout the year. However you plan your visit to North Coast Open Studios, you will find a dazzling display of fine arts and crafts to fit all styles and budgets. Get to know your local artists and enjoy the amazing variety of art Humboldt County has to offer! North Coast Open Studios is a free event, so there is no admission charged at any venue.

THANK YOU to our Community Supporters For Helping to Make North Coast Open Studios Possible!

Weekend 1 is June 4-5 and Weekend 2 is June 11-12. Studios are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, unless otherwise noted. Join us this year for North Coast Open Studios Art Night, Friday, June 3, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A listing of participating artists and Art Night-specific maps are on pages 4-6. North Coast Open Studios is an annual showcase of local artists and their art in Humboldt County. Included in this guide, you will find listings for artists who are opening their studios (their “natural habitats,” if you will) to the public, allowing art lovers a glimpse into the creative process. Visitors to North Coast Open Studios will have an opportunity to see what happens inside an artist’s creative space. Meet the artists and see work from a wide array of art styles, including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, ceramics, and more. During this free showcase for the arts, visit mid-career and emerging artists in traditional and non-traditional spaces. Talk to artists about their creative process, see their recent works, and purchase art. WANT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS? Visit our website at northcoastopenstudios.com for maps, additional images, artist information and more! Want to keep up-to-date on what is going on? Check out North Coast Open Studios on Facebook and Instagram! HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE The artist listings are arranged alphabetically by community,

THE STEERING COMMITTEE The North Coast Open Studios steering committee is comprised of working artists and community members dedicated to opening doors to artists in our community. After a two year hiatus, North Coast Open Studios came together on a much shorter timeline than usual with a “skeleton crew” of a committee. Leslie Castellano Leslie Castellano is an artist, aerialist, city councilperson, and Executive Director of the Ink People. Leslie is also the founder and director of Synapsis, where she works to create opportunities for emerging social practices and a wide range of performance forms. She has a deep appreciation for the roles that artists and cultural practitioners play in a vibrant and healthy community. Leslie stands in front of a wall of participating artist Patricia Sennott’s art. northcoastopenstudios.com

Monica Topping Monica Topping took over coordination of North Coast Open Studios in 2014. She brings a wealth of event planning knowledge from her time on the Kinetic Universe board of directors, and networking contacts from more than 15 years of working in local media. She LIKE likes Eureka and joined the Eureka Art and Culture Commission in 2016. She won the Victor Thomas Jacoby Award in 2016, and started melting recycled glass bottles and broken glassware into lovely colored beads in 2017, then was chosen Eureka’s Artist of the Year for 2020, for creating jewelry out of recycled and repurposed materials under the name Rock Chick Designs. She’s also the Administrative Director for the Ink People Center for the Arts. Monica can’t think of a better job than being a cheerleader for Humboldt County artists. Interested in joining the steering committee for our 23nd Annual event in 2023? Call (707) 442-8413 or email contact@northcoastopenstudios.com to find out more. 31
