EEKEND 1 IS JUNE 1-2 and WEEKEND 2 IS JUNE 9-10. Studios are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, unless otherwise noted. Join us this year for North Coast Open Studios Art Night, Friday, May 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A listing of participating artists and Art Night-specific maps are on pages 4-6. North Coast Open Studios is an annual showcase of local artists and their art in Humboldt County. Included in this guide, you will find listings for artists who are opening their studios (their “natural habitats,” if you will) to the public, allowing art lovers a glimpse into the creative process. Visitors to North Coast Open Studios will have an opportunity to see what happens inside an artist’s creative space. Meet the artists and see work from a wide array of art styles, including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, ceramics, and more. During this free showcase for the arts, visit mid-career and emerging artists in traditional and non-traditional spaces. Talk to artists about their creative process, see their recent works, and purchase art. WANT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS? Visit our website, northcoastopenstudios.com, for maps, additional images, artist information and more!

N

Want to keep up-to-date on what is going on? Check out North Coast Open Studios on Facebook and Instagram!

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE The artist listings are arranged alphabetically by community, listed regionally from South to North. Browse through to discover the artists you wish to visit. Check the maps, shown with each community listing, to find studios based on location. Looking for a specific artist? Check the Alphabetical index on page 37. Each artist listing has general information about the artist, including an image of their work, the type of artwork they create, art categories (for the Visitor BINGO game on page 7), directions to their studio, contact information, and which weekend (or weekends) they will be open. At the end of the artist listings is a special section of artists who will not be open during either Open Studios weekend, but are open by appointment only, year-round. Also, if you can’t visit an artist during their open weekend, keep in mind that many artists enjoy visitors, and most will open their studios by appointment throughout the year. However you plan your visit to North Coast Open Studios, you will find a dazzling display of fine arts and crafts to fit all styles and budgets. Get to know your local artists and enjoy the amazing variety of art Humboldt County has to offer! North Coast Open Studios is a free event, so there is no admission charged at any venue. ✦

THANK YOU to our Community Supporters For Helping to Make North Coast Open Studios Possible!

ORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS is supported by Humboldt County artists, businesses, and community members like you. NCOS would not be possible without the generous support of many people. Thank you to the NCOS steering committee, who help secure participants and sponsorships, talk sense into a very enthusiastic event coordinator, and distribute publications like pros. Thanks to Morse Media for the website hosting and the 101 Things Publication for the use of their wonderful maps, year after year. Thank you to

our Guidebook Layout Goddess, Holly Harvey at the North Coast Journal, for our beautiful publication each year. Thank you to Libby Maynard at the Ink People Center for the Arts, through which North Coast Open Studios continues to be a nonprofit event, as a DreamMaker project (and they do our bookkeeping!). Thank you to everyone who made the Art Show & Reception possible: The Ink People for hosting, Lost Coast Brewery, Cypress Grove Chevre, Beck’s Bakery, the interns who hung the show, and all the wonderful volunteers who

North Coast Open Studios First Friday Art Night, May 31, 6 to 9 p.m.

N

orth Coast Open Studios presents our third annual Art Night, kicking off the two weekend event with an evening of Open Studios, the night before the main event starts. We understand that some folks work over the weekend, or have other engagements, or maybe just want time to see more art — NCOS Art Night is for you! On pages 4-6, you’ll find a geographic listing of all of the participating artists, who are planning to open for this special Friday evening event. Next to their names, their listing number will tell you which location is theirs on the Friday Art Night maps. Further into the guidebook, you’ll find listings for each of these artists (alphabetically, by region), with a description of the artist’s work, address, directions to their studio (if needed), contact information, and a representative image of their work. Please keep in mind that not every NCOS participating artist has chosen to open for the Art Night. The artists who will be open are in this section of the guidebook. Don’t forget to get a head start on your 2019 NCOS BINGO game (on page 7), for a chance to win a gift certificate from one of our sponsors. ✦

The Steering Committee

The North Coast Open Studios volunteer steering committee is comprised of working artists and community members dedicated to opening doors to artists in our community. THANK YOU for all of the time and energy you have given to make Open Studios a reality for 2019.

Mary Bancud-Bettis owns Lotus Studio Pottery in Old Town Eureka. She is an alumni of HSU, CR, and Bellevue University. She helps the elder population at Humboldt Senior Resource Center and is raising two teenagers with her husband Jack. Mary’s passion for pottery helped her establish the Lotus Studio Pottery in April 2014. The studio offers classes to the community of all ages and all levels. The studio is open by appointment only. Amy Fowler is the owner of the online millinery supply business Humboldt Haberdashery and her bespoke millinery is sold under the brand Millinery by Amy Fowler. All designs are 100% handmade by Amy and are one of a kind. Her style is artistic yet wearable, with emphasis on sculptural design. She enjoys developing new approaches to traditional and contemporary materials. Amy is also an adviser with the North Coast Small Business Development Center specializing in eCommerce business.

Interested in joining the steering committee for our 22nd annual event in 2020? Call (707) 442-8413 or email contact@northcoastopenstudios.com to find out more. 38 NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS 2019

Larissa Haney actually trained to be a botanist, but found art as a hobby and later a business when a health problem forced her to reevaluate. She first discovered succulents and makes fluid cement planters for her plantings. She has recently added a new artistic medium in Turkish-style watermarbling and teaching people to make elaborate water-marbling designs on silk scarves. The process looks complicated, but easily done for people from 3-93 (so far). Larissa loves helping people find a new and empowering art form. Since 2004, Jemima Harr has served as the Executive Director-Curator for the Humboldt Arts Council in the Morris Graves Museum of Art. With degrees in Art History as well as Museum & Gallery Practices from Humboldt State University, Jemima has collaborated on countless museum exhibitions and programs, including with the San Francisco Airport Museum, the Triton Museum of Art, and the Richard L. Nelson Gallery at the University of California, Davis. In 2015, Jemima served as the North Coast region’s Learning Collaboratives’ facilitator, part of the California Networks for Collaboration, a program of the California Association of Museums. Jemima is currently serving a two year term as a board member for the California Association of Museums, and serves on the Eureka Art and Culture Commission.

Libby Maynard is the Executive Director of The Ink People Center for the Arts and co-founder of the organization. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout California, and is in collections across the nation. Maynard is also a consultant in nonprofit management and program development, and serves on many community boards. Anna Oneglia is a painter and printmaker in Arcata. She’s a believer in Open Studios, because there’s nothing like seeing where and how things are made. Anna participated in Santa Cruz Open Studios for 29 years before moving back to Humboldt and getting involved with North Coast Open Studios. This is Monica Topping’s sixth year as Coordinator for North Coast Open Studios. She brings a wealth of event planning knowledge from her time on the Kinetic Universe board of directors, and networking contacts from more than 15 years of working in local media. She LIKE likes Eureka and joined the Eureka Art and Culture Commission in 2016. She also won the Victor Thomas Jacoby Award in 2016, and started melting recycled glass bottles into lovely colored beads in 2017. Monica creates jewelry out of recycled and repurposed materials, under the name Rock Chick Designs. She can’t think of a better job than being a cheerleader for Humboldt County artists.
