To the 18th Annual North Coast Open Studios North Coast Open Studios is an annual showcase of local artists and their art in Humboldt County. Included in this guide you will find listings for artists who are opening their studios to the public, allowing art lovers a glimpse into the creative process. Visitors to North Coast Open Studios will have a rare opportunity to see what happens inside an artist’s creative space. Meet the artists and see work from a broad spectrum of fine art styles, including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, furniture and ceramics. During this free showcase for the arts, visit mid-career and emerging artists in both traditional and non-traditional spaces. The artists will be available to discuss their creative process, display their recent works and offer works for sale.

Want more information about North Coast Open Studios? Find more information on pages 4-5, or visit our website at www.northcoastopenstudios.com for interactive maps, additional images, artist information and more! Want to keep up-to-date on what is going on? Check out North Coast Open Studios on Facebook!

How to use this guide You can use this guide a number of ways. The artist listings are arranged alphabetically by community, listed regionally from Northern Humboldt to Southern Humboldt. Browse through to discover the artists you wish to visit. Check the maps, shown with each community listing, to find studios based on location. Looking for a specific artist? Check the Alphabetical Index on page 37. Each artist listing has general information about the artist, including an image of their work, the type of artwork they create, art categories (for the Visitor BINGO game on page 7), directions to their studio, contact information and which weekend (or weekends) they will be open. Weekend 1 is June 4-5 and Weekend 2 is June 11-12. Studios are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, unless otherwise noted. At the end of the artist listings is a special section of artists who will not be open during either Open Studios weekend, but are open by appointment only year-round. Also, if you can’t visit an artist during their open weekend, keep in mind that artists enjoy visitors, and most will open their studios by appointment throughout the year. However you plan your visit to North Coast Open Studios, you will find a dazzling display of fine arts and crafts to fit all styles and budgets. Get to know your local artist and enjoy the amazing variety of art Humboldt County has to offer!

North Coast Open Studios is a free event, so there is no admission charged at any venue. NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS 2016

never know what you will find behind the studio door. Visitors can view art and visit with artists all in an open-house, informal environment. This is your chance to meet the artists firsthand, explore types of work that are both familiar and new to you and support our local arts community by purchasing works directly from the artists. You can also take this opportunity to make an appointment to visit individual artists throughout the year, for an in-depth and ongoing look at their creative progress. Remember, there is no charge to the public — this is a free community event, provided by your neighborhood artists.

ORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS

is supported by Humboldt County artists, businesses and community members like you. NCOS would not be possible without the generous support of many people. Thank you to the NCOS steering committee, who help secure sponsorships, talk sense into a very enthusiastic event coordinator and distribute publications like pros. Thanks to Gabe Pressure of HiFidelity Design for our modern (and searchable!) website (www. northcoastopenstudios.com) and to Morse Media for the website hosting. Thank you to 101 Things Publication for the use of their wonderful maps, year after year, and our Guidebook Layout Goddess, Holly Harvey at the North Coast Journal, for our beautiful publication each year. Thank you to everyone who made the Artist Show & Reception possible: Stonesthrow Boutique for hosting, The Ink People Center for the Arts, Wrangletown Cider Company, Cypress Grove Chevre, and all the wonderful volunteers who hung the show and helped work the event! Thank you to Natalie Craig for designing our poster, Lynn Jones of Just My Type Letterpress for creating our fancy Reception invitation, and Ryan Filgas, our awesome e-newsletter intern, for all of his time and photographic skills. The Steering Committee

The North Coast Open Studios volunteer steering committee is comprised of working artists and community members dedicated to opening doors to artists in our community. Thank you for all of the time and energy you have given to make Open Studios a reality for 2016.

38 NORTH COAST OPEN STUDIOS 2016

Cheryl Rau has been making Art since she was five years old. A bit later, she decided she wanted to be a teacher. For a while the teacher part was her job, however, Art was always part of her teaching and living. When Cheryl retired a few years ago, she turned her garage into a studio and declared herself an Artist! She signed up for North Coast Open Studios. That year was a great success – she found her people. The next year, she not only opened her studio, but joined the Steering Committee. Teresa Saluzzo grew up in a family of professional artists and has been an artist for most of her adult life. She is a credentialed teacher, has a supplemental art credential and has taught whole school art programs. Teaching children art has been one of her most inspirational learning processes. Teresa has been a professional weaver, an award winning gardener and now she is a full time working artist. She believes that art is not a rarefied intellectual process, but something that can be achieved by hard work and vision, with a good portion of laughter thrown in. Christina Swingdler has been actively inspired by sparkles since she was five years old, and in 2008 decided to make the world a more delicious smilefilled reality one sparkle at a time by creating Christina Anastasia. Christina’s work explores the dance between color, texture and history, manifesting sumptuous, one of a kind, limited edition works that massage the senses while enhancing one’s divine essence. This is Monica Topping’s third year as Coordinator for North Coast Open Studios. She brings a wealth of event planning knowledge from her time on the Kinetic Universe board of directors, and networking contacts from more than a decade of working in local media. Monica created the 2014 “small town: BIG ART” calendar, a celebration of Humboldt County artists, and hopes to bring it back for 2017. She can’t think of a better job than being a cheerleader for Humboldt County artists.
