FROM THE PUBLISHER

This year, it’s personal

T

his year we have four weddings in the house at the North Coast Journal — two employees and the daughters of two employees. As we put the final touches on this year’s stories, photos and all those beautiful ads for our wedding vendors, some of us are shopping for dresses, selecting a cake and hiring a band right along with you. Many of you probably have seen the Journal’s new annual magazine called the Do It Green Guide on newsstands. (It came out last fall and will be republished this summer.) Not coincidently, this year’s anchor story for the Wedding Guide 2011 is all about how to have a green, or greener, wedding. And we found the ideal couple to feature: Jan and Ben Scurfield. Ben owns Scurfield Solar, a business specializing in all things solar. Jan owns Sacred Images Photography, specializing in natural, eco-friendly photography. Arts and culture editor Bob Doran, who now edits all our special publications including DIGG and this Wedding Guide, interviewed the Scurfields for the story. We also have a report written by Alana Chenevert, new Journal graphic artist and A&E contributor, about the local vendors who worked on a super-secret wedding that occurred in mid-December 2010. A young Eureka couple was selected for a complete makeover and surprise wedding by the staff of the Carson-Nation show. The local vendors mostly donated their products and services in exchange for the free publicity and a chance to show off. (Carson-Nation star Carson Kressley, the tall blond guy from the show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, was in town for a week. His show just debuted on Oprah Winfrey’s new network, OWN. The Eureka segment will air in the summer or fall of 2011.) Do you want to get married outside under the trees or on the beach? Outdoor weddings are increasingly popular, so freelancer Jennifer Savage takes a look at Humboldt County’s most popular public venues. They are both Humboldt-beautiful and relatively inexpensive compared to the private outdoor venue sites. (Disclosure: My husband and I own one of those private sites, the Fieldbrook Winery, but we have limited availability and are completely booked.) Jen also offers important tips to remember about shuttle service and Porta-potties. Kathryn Blaisdell, our all-around talented sales assistant at the Journal, offers tips on assembling a truly Humboldt bag of goodies for your out-of-town guests. And rounding out our editorial coverage are two fabulous photo essays. Humboldt photographers are a talented bunch and it shows. First, we have an essay of Muir Adams photos of a couple who wed in Bayside. The second essay showcases assorted photographers who are doing innovative things with digital special effects. We hope this guide will be helpful and we wish you all the best in planning your big day.

A Green Wedding The Scurfields’ sustainable, low-impact celebration By Bob Doran

hen you plan a wedding you’re preparing a once in a lifetime experience, one that reflects who you are as a couple. With the growing awareness of sustainable living, more couples whose lifestyles tend in a “green” direction are looking for ways to make their weddings greener. That was definitely the plan for Jan and Ben Scurfield, and it comes as no surprise: Their business, Scurfield Solar, is all about green energy, from solar panels and solar water heater installation to wind power and radiant heating. “We try to be as low-impact as we can and our wedding was no different,” said Ben when we spoke recently at the couple’s all solar home in Eureka. “It just means a lot to both of us,” said Jan, completing Ben’s thought. “It’s the way we live our lives.”

For the Scurfields, greening their wedding began with choosing the location. They rented the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Church in Bayside in part because it’s a solar-powered facility, one with a meadow behind it for an outdoor ceremony. “It just felt right,” said Ben. “It was great being outdoors and the place was so well designed: The church is all passive solar — you don’t have to throw the lights on indoors. We had the wedding and the reception in the same place — that made everything easier,” and it meant less driving — and fuel consumption — for the 120-member wedding party. “Using the church worked really well for us because they had enough tables and chairs that we didn’t have to rent too much,” said Jan. “Plus it was surprisingly inexpensive.” Jan says she avoided excessive decorations and kept the floral More ➤

— Lauren got quite a bit of the produce from him.” (With the CSA or Community Supported Agriculture system, buyers pay in advance for a “share” of the crop and receive a weekly allotment of produce.) Locally-sourced appetizers included Henry’s Olives, Humboldt Fog chevre from Cypress Grove and Loleta Cheese with Brio bread. Beverages included local and organic wines, local beer and homebrew made by friends. Even the wedding cake included local ingredients: “One of our wedding cakes was a carrot cake made from Eddie’s carrots,” said Ben. “My friend Sarah [Hart] was my maid of honor,” said Jan. “She has Calla Lily Cakes, so she was in the wedding and made three cakes for us. We also had a ‘Chocolate Death’ cake for Ben and I wanted a lemon raspberry cake,” she added before lapsing into cake memory reverie. And yes, some aspects of going green can mean shelling out a bit more green. “You really have to look at your budget and see where you want to spend money,” said Jan. “For us it was the food — it costs more to do the local and organic, but it was so worth it. “There were other areas we were willing to spend more on so we could keep it greener. We didn’t want any waste or anything disposable so we used rented linen table clothes and napkins with rented glasses and plates. We could have cut costs by using paper napkins and plates, but it was important to us not to have a lot of trash.” Overall, going green did not mean they had a less elegant wedding and it certainly was no less memorable, and, said both the bride and groom, it was not at all complicated. “I’m proud to say we planned the whole thing within six months and there was no stress,” said Jan. “I had wonderful friends who helped out — that made a huge difference — but I had no problem getting everything done. It was a beautiful day all around.” And the planet is no worse for wear. l

displays to a minimum. “My bouquets were mostly wildflowers. A friend who lives in Fieldbrook gathered some of the flowers from her garden and she did some of the floral displays. We kept that pretty minimal since we had such beautiful surroundings to start with.” They made their own table displays. Ben crafted homemade planter boxes using wood from palates that come with the solar panels he installs. Jan filled them with planting mix and live flowers and added seashells and rocks they’d collected together. “And at the end of the day people took all the table decorations home.” Another thing they did was assemble seed packets for guests to take away. “Instead of sending them off with little trinkets that would just get stuffed in some drawer, we filled packets with 12 varieties of sunflower seeds that they could take home and plant,” said Jan. Jan’s wedding dress and Ben’s suit were both made from sustainable fiber. The bride’s dress and those for the maid and matron of honor were all handmade from hemp silk. His hemp shirt came from Arcatabased Solutions. “I tried to get the [hemp] suit from Solutions too, but they didn’t have any so I had to order it,” said Ben. (He found his Canadian hemp outfit online.) “We were pretty low key,” said Jan, which meant no tuxedos for the guys. “For his best man and groomsman, he just told them to wear whatever they had — and something brown would be nice. Donny [Holliman, the best man] found his awesome jacket at a thrift store.” When it came to food for the reception, everything was as local as possible. “When we interviewed caterers, local and seasonal sourcing was something we asked about,” said Jan. Their ultimate choice was Lauren Sarabia’s Comfort of Home Catering. As Jan noted, “Lauren is one of the co-authors of Locally Delicious,” a combined cookbook and guide to local sustainable food sources. “ We had local grass-fed beef and our friend Eddie Tanner supplied vegetables,” said Ben. “We get our CSA share from Eddie

ou love your partner for reasons innumerable. You love Humboldt County for its redwoods, rivers and stunning coastline. An outdoor wedding combines all that love into a place as unique as your life together is sure to be. But where to start? Certainly a number of privately owned options are available, but the most breathtaking locations tend to be part of the public trust. Here’s a quick guide to some of the most sought after venues: Pamplin Grove. How popular is the river-side redwood setting of Pamplin Grove? Demand to reserve this slightly off-thebeaten-path setting, located within Van Duzen County Park, out Hwy 36 east of Alton and next to Grizzly Creek State Park, is so high that folks line up outside the Humboldt County Parks office for days in hopes of making one of the 19 available weekends theirs. Reservations are taken the first business day of the year for the May 1 through Nov. 30 season. Renting the grove requires a minimum of 50 campers with a maximum of about 250. Rates (always subject to change) currently run $250 during the week and $475 for weekends and all holidays, plus an additional security deposit and insurance coverage. Serving alcohol? That’s extra, too. Only one reserva-

tion per season per person, so you can’t try to cover a bunch of dates in advance while you’re figuring out exactly when your wedding will take place. Call Luann Reid at (707) 445-7651 for more information. Patrick’s Point State Park. Another high-on-the-popularity list wedding site is Patrick’s Point State Park, just north of Trinidad, particularly the apt-named Wedding Rock. And no wonder – with the great Pacific Ocean as a backdrop, places don’t get much prettier than this. How many guests you’re allowed depends greatly on the site you choose, which group camping areas are available and the number of vehicles required to transport all those people to the park, but overall, weddings large and small can be accommodated. Other restrictions apply: due to the nature of it being a state park, neither balloons nor amplified music are allowed – and like all public spaces, the public may be wandering around. Also, because tourists utilize the park heavily during holidays, those weekends are unavailable for weddings. Overall, however, tying the knot in a state park is recognized as a super-special thing, and Nancy Jo Martin will happily help with logistics. Call her at (707) 677-3110. Reservation cost starts at $200. Prairie Creek State Park. No less beautiful, but somewhat less utilized are the redwood surroundings of Prairie Creek State Park, More ➤

near the town of Orick. Event fees run from $80 for less than 50 people up to $700 for over 100. Not many weekends are offered during the summer months as the park remains a favorite with both visitors and locals as a sightseeing destination. September is prime time for weddings – and a classically smart time to get hitched outdoors as Humboldt’s “summer” typically doesn’t kick in until close to fall. Traffic congestion and parking will need to be addressed. Consider arranging carpools or using a shuttle service. Reservations should be made at least a few weeks ahead of time. As always, earlier is better. To do so, contact Janet Cooper at (707) 465-7307. Moonstone Beach. Not exactly public, but hardly private, the Moonstone marriage experience combines Humboldt County’s most popular beach along with the private Merryman’s Beach House and adjacent parking lot, in Westhaven south of Trinidad. If you opt to wed on the sand in front of the house, you spare yourself dealing with the county and beach permit issues. You might also consider the “knoll” up above, next to Moonstone Grill. In either case, staying within the Merryman-owned property ensures your ability to have your event, but with the public lands abutting, keeping beachgoers totally out of your business is near impossible. Most people find it

well worth the $1,500 cost of renting the beach house for the day. It holds 90 people inside, but has a large deck onto which overflowing guests can spill. Parking can be a problem when the weather’s nice and surf’s up, so definitely consider shuttle service or, at the least, arranging carpools. For more, contact Melissa at mmerrymankinder@hotmail.com. Shuttle service. City Cab provides two options to ferry your guests to your moment of blissful union. To transport fewer than 10 passengers at a time, the cost is $50 per hour per vehicle. For 10 to 25 passengers, the fare runs $75 per hour. Both require a three-hour minimum commitment. For most weddings, hiring two vehicles serves to maintain the flow of departure and arrival. As always, the earlier the notice, the better. Call City Cab at (707) 442-4551. Porta-potties. Even in the throes of true love, basic needs must be addressed. In the great outdoors, options other than ducking behind a tree should be made available for your guests. Fortunately, said options include the upscale 816 Oasis restroom trailer – a huge improvement over the standard single-user toilet shack. The Oasis offers improved aesthetics, plus superior comfort and cleanliness, and can potentially service up to 245 men or 105 women per hour. Call B&B at (707) 445-0830. l

Carson Kressley visits Shipwreck in Old Town, Eureka.

The Oprah Wedding Carson-Nation comes to town to shoot a local couple’s nuptials By Alana Chenevert

H

er first name alone exudes an eminence far exceeding the confines of American popular culture. It’s a name that has the ability to induce emotions ranging from excruciating jubilance to paralyzing fear. Five letters. Three consonants. Two vowels. One woman. Oprah. You hear the name and can’t help but quiver at its all-encompassing power. There is absolutely no doubt — and I’m willing to bet all 68 cents of my life savings on this — that Oprah Winfrey is the most influential woman on the face of the Earth. Head of a media empire, for nearly 25 years she has had arguably the most successful television show, well, ever. When she announced her plan to depart from the daytime talk show realm in late 2009, it seemed as though the world had been forced to turn

the last page of the most riveting rags-to-riches tale in modern history. Fortunately for those of us who idolize her, it was a false ending — she was merely moving on to bigger and better things, specifically, her own network: OWN, as in the Oprah Winfrey Network. Yawn. Who cares? And what does Oprah have to do with Humboldt County weddings anyway? Well, among the new shows in the works for OWN is one called Carson-Nation featuring Carson Kressley, the tall blond guy from the Queer Eye For the Straight Guy makeover team. Kressley and his crew were in Eureka last December to film a wedding. Kressley is already co-host for Your OWN Show, where contestants compete to become host of a show on Oprah’s network. His own show, due to launch in March, includes makeover elements along the lines of

Queer Eye, but grander: He wants to makeover the whole nation one small town at a time. And as fate would have it, one of the places due for a makeover was Eureka, a fate supposedly decided by throwing a dart at a map of the United States. Half an inch to the left and Carson could’ve been making over an unsuspecting grey whale in the Pacific Ocean. As Kressley himself told the Journal when we spoke to him in Old Town in December, “Our mission is to go to small towns all across America, which people think don’t have great style, but show people that they can use their local resources and find great things, whether it’s vintage clothing or a local salon or spa.” Part of the local transformation process involved what Kressley described as “making over a couple for their dream wedding.” To facilitate, before the Carson-Nation

production crew came to town they assembled what they dubbed the “Dream Team.” “They already had the idea of shooting in Eureka,” said Cassandra Hesseltine, interim film commissioner for filmHUMBOLDT, who also works planning weddings for Weddings by Design. “They came to us first for casting and once they found who they wanted to film, they said to us, ‘These are our needs, who do you recommend?’” Linden Glavich, a local stylist and owner of Linden & Company Salon in Eureka, was one of the first contacted to be a part of this grand occasion. “I had been talking to the producer since October,” Glavich said. “We’d be texting back and forth and she’d ask me things like ‘Do you know a friendly baker? Where do you like to go for lunch? Where’s a nice place to eat dinner?’” After interviewing dozens of Humboldt County wedding professionals, the Carson-Nation producers chose a group of individuals representing the crème de la crème: wedding planner Shirley Atkins (Weddings by Design), photographer Kambria Antón (Eyelight Photography), florist Suzy Haggerty (Suzy Haggerty Designs), floral arranger Sarah Abernathy, stylist Linden Glavich (Linden & Company Salon), make-up artist Kristine Chadwick and wedding officiant Richard Bradley. Once the Dream Team was assembled, they were given just two weeks to coordinate the elements for the big event at the Carter House Inn. There was a small hitch: Carson-Nation wanted an element of surprise, so they had to arrange an entire wedding without having met the bride and groom, who did not know until days before that their wedding was being planned for them. They weren’t given photos of the couple, just a bit of background information about them to hold them over until the week of the wedding. However, that sliver of information was all the Dream Team needed to jump on board and agree to volunteer their services free of charge. (Due to signed non-disclosure agreements, team members could not reveal specifics of the couple’s story or their names, nor are they allowed to share photos of the wedding.) Dream Teamers suggested that putting

together a wedding can be hectic on its own, but this one was even more so considering the timing of filming and added pressures of dealing with last minute changes. Kressley arrived the day before the wedding with most of the essential elements already in place, but his vision for some things ended up being completely different. For example said wedding planner Shirley Atkins, “Suzy [Haggerty] had ordered flowers that she thought they were going to use. Then when we met him [host Carson Kressley] for the first time — on camera — he’s telling us which flowers he wanted to use and how we should arrange them when the wedding was the next day. It was all very fun and exciting, but crazy at the same time.” Said wedding photographer Kambria Antón, “They didn’t have a clue how weddings work. It was a lot different for me as a photographer. Because they wanted elements of the wedding to be a surprise, I didn’t even get to meet the bride until the day of the wedding when she was getting her makeup done.” While all concerned said the crew was quite professional, it was clear they were not really familiar with various wedding protocols. “Usually [the photographer] has some time with the bride and groom either before or after their vows,” said Antón. “For them it was like three hours of hair and make-up before she got into her dress, and that was 15 minutes or less before she walked down the aisle. They suggested we take the wedding photos in the gap after the ceremony was over while they were rearranging the room for the reception.” Because the ceremony was being filmed, she could not use her flash even though the wedding was indoors. She also had to stay out of view of the TV cameras, which meant a lot of squatting and ducking. “The whole thing was set up for the TV crew to highlight big emotions,” she said, emphasizing that the bride “was really easy to work with — she was really undemanding.” Others on the Dream Team noted that the producers were quick to ask for their

input, considering the fact that they were chosen because they are experts in their field, and the production staff hadn’t initially planned on filming the wedding itself. “Since the crew’s original intentions weren’t to create a wedding, they didn’t quite have all of the particulars figured in,” said Atkins. “For instance, two minutes before the wedding started I asked the director ‘Where do you want [the bride] to go when she’s done because [the crew] will continue filming? And he says, ‘Well, I don’t know. What do you normally do?’ At that moment they stopped filming and said, ‘What do you want to do Shirley?’” If you factor in the needs of a celebrity host, and a production crew on a tight schedule a little more than a week before Christmas, you would assume the theatrics of it all would take away from the actual wedding itself. According to the Dream Team, however, the Carson-Nation crew made it a priority to put the ceremony before the production. As Atkins put it, “It was, after all, a real wedding, not just a TV show.” “I told them [the ceremony] would probably only last about nine minutes,” said Richard Bradley the wedding officiate. “So the fewer interruptions, the better.” The crew took

heed to Bradley’s advice and only moved the camera once during the entire ceremony. “We just went with the flow — all of us did,” said Antón. “We did it, but it took a lot of spontaneity and creativity on our part to pull it off. I usually like to be a lot more organized. Honestly, a lot of what I ended up doing was documenting their day being part of a TV show instead of just their wedding day.” Asked about the experience with the Carson-Nation team, Hesseltine had this to say, “It made all of us feel nutty, but overall they were fabulous to work with. They were very considerate and appreciative of our work.” “They threw us some curve balls,” said Atkins, “but nothing we couldn’t make happen. It was actually a big deal filming here — this was the first episode they did for a brand new show. I’d have to say, everyone involved felt great about it when it was done.” Carson-Nation is scheduled to begin airing in the spring on The Oprah Winfrey Network. t’s a popular trend to greet out-of-town visitors with a welcome package filled with goodies and including resources on the local area, things that you love that are uniquely humboldt County that you want to share with your visitors. that could include local cheeses and breads, spreads and jams, coffees and chocolates, the list goes on. You know which local establishment brews your favorite cup and what you spread on your toast each morning; pick out some of your favorites and introduce them to your guests. You can find local products at most grocery stores, many gift shops, or from the manufacturer’s themselves. and if you are not sure which local products to choose from, visit the humboldt independent Business alliance website for some ideas (www.humiba.org). Your friends and families will enjoy getting a real taste of humboldt! other gift ideas include items that are emblematic of humboldt County culture. think redwood tree seedlings, seeds, sand dollars, banana slugs, ferns, crabs, Bill the chimpanzee and red pandas, wildlife, logging and fishing, again, the list could go on and on. include soaps, magnets, cups or glasses, glass art, t-shirts or any of the many interesting artifacts one can easily find in local gift shops and bookstores, at your Chamber of Commerce, or from many local businesses. if you have time, you can get crafty and make items yourself! in addition to gifts and goodies it’s a good idea to provide suggestions on activities for your guests to experience during their stay.

Out of town folks are here to celebrate with you, but they also want to enjoy the community you call home and since you’ll be busy getting ready for your big day, you will probably not have time to serve as a personal tour guide. Visitor information is accessible and it is easy to personalize your suggestions, all you need to do is gather brochures to direct your guests and give them ideas. Your local Chamber of Commerce and the Humboldt County Convention and Visitors Bureau in Eureka both produce visitor guides, and provide those publications and others free of charge. Include additional resources like the Journal’s Menu of Menus, state and county hiking maps, historic tour information, and of course a copy of the current North Coast Journal! You might also include a personalized guide highlighting some of your favorite places and experiences, and referencing stories the wedding couple may have shared. Humboldt County is full of unique opportunities, from a ride on the Madaket to a hike through the redwoods, from sampling produce at Farmers’ Market to enjoying fresh crab right on the coast; there is an abundance of choices for your friends and family to enjoy. And when they leave they will have a sense of what day-to-day life is like for their favorite happy couple. Once you know what’s going inside there are plenty of options on how to contain all these goodies and resources. Re-usable tote bags are available from your favorite local store or organization, or better yet, make your own. Purchase blank tote bags and decorate them

yourselves with a picture of the couple or art in your wedding’s color scheme. Visit an art supply store and choose from iron on transfers, stamping or cloth painting supplies. Or, you may find that personalizing a box is more convenient for your chosen items, or choose a locally made basket to greet your guests. The choices are endless and your guests will take home a re-usable souvenir. However you decide to enclose the items, take some time to personalize the container so that it becomes part of the gift. When guests leave the wedding to go back home, send them off with some special Humboldt County tokens that will contribute memories of their visit on the North Coast and let them know they are an essential part of your wedding experience. They will exit from behind the Redwood Curtain feeling that they know you, and the place you call home more fully and with greater appreciation. You will have engaged them in a wellrounded experience, culminating in your special day, which they will treasure forever. Local visitor information can be found online at:

from sushi to sandwiches, we’ve got you covered. The 2010 Menu of Menus is available on newsstands throughout Humboldt County and online 24/7 at www.northcoastjournal.com

Jeff & Leshele go big! July 2010

EUREKA and bayside, CA

The reception Leshele had always dreamed of having the wedding at her mom’s house. The “guest book” Note cards had special words on them like, happiness, love, laugh, etc. Guests chose one and wrote a special note for the bride and groom, then hung it on the tree. The colors Purple and green were chosen because Leshele saw the colors throughout the couple’s everyday lives.

Beyond Film

T

hese days, it seems like anything’s possible when it comes to photography, thanks to computers and photo editing software. Effects that were challenging to create on film have become incredibly easy in the digital age. Be sure to ask your photographer if he or she can add even more drama and romance to your photographic memories using some of these techniques.
