Fall is the New Summer

ell, in Humboldt, anyway. While other people are shaking the sand off their beach towels and calling it quits in late August, we’re just getting started behind the Redwood Curtain. In September and October, the weather is warm, the fog lifts, the air is crisp and the light does more for your photographs than any filter. The evening chill brings out favorite sweaters, but the cold doesn’t bite. June is nice, but brides around here clamor to schedule outdoor weddings in forests, on beaches and family farms during the fall. (The aforementioned light beats a fake tan hands down.) Did you bring your golf clubs? In this issue, you’ll get the lowdown on all seven courses in the county. We’ve also got a profile on kayaking queen Marna Powell, founder of Kayak Zak’s and just the woman to see about fall and winter paddling, even if you’ve got physical challenges. Hikers will revel in the clear skies and mild weather for a trek through the redwoods or along the beach, and we’ve scouted some gorgeous destinations, as well as places to enjoy horseback riding, a beer on the patio or a dip in a hot tub. We’ve also got indoor fun saved up for a rainy day, from wine tasting to crafting with the kiddies. (Maybe do the crafting first.) And once the holidays arrive, stick around for the tree lightings (consider our trees), roaming carolers in Victorian Ferndale and the community arts nights that turn into holiday festivals in the streets. Cooling temperatures and the arrival of a Humboldt winter are also a great excuse — ahem, opportunity — for the mostly indoor sport of shopping. In fact, a tour of our local specialty stores might just bring the joy back to holiday shopping. Stroll through some of our favorite vintage and antique places in our “Just Browsing” story (we defy you not to touch the merchandise in these curious little nooks) and check off your gift list as you peruse the souvenirs in “Take it with You.” For those of us who prefer a little comfort food, how about fried chicken, oysters, wild salmon and steamer clams? The restaurants featured in this issue even offer something to take away besides a doggie bag — local and house sauces and wines to enjoy back home as you reminisce about your trip and plan the next one. We’ve even got some expert advice on navigating local wines to find your new favorite. Prepare to fall in love with Humboldt in the fall.

Jennifer Savage moved to Humboldt County with her husband and three children during the 1997-98 El Niño. She reveled in the rain, fell for the fog, still skips in the sunshine. Her favorite things are family, being outdoors, eating and eating outdoors with her family. She hopes Humboldt will lodge in visitors’ hearts as much as it has in hers.

Linda Stansberry, originally from the wilds of Honeydew, California, has been a Journal contributor since 2013, when she returned from circumnavigating the globe to discover that Humboldt County is the most beautiful place in the world. She has been dedicated to popularizing this opinion ever since.

Paul DeMark is a graduate of Humboldt State University’s journalism program and worked as a reporter and managing editor of the Redwood Record in Garberville and The Arcata Union. He is also a local musician, playing drums for The Delta Nationals, LaPatina Band and The Gila Monsters.

Dev Richards is a Humboldt native who joined the ranks of the Journal in 2011 as a freelancer. Currently, she is the calendar editor/President of Calendars. When she’s not overusing semicolons and hyphens, she spends her time making puns, creating awkward situations and missing the Oxford comma.

Lynn Leishman has been a florist, model, retail buyer, gift and antique storeowner, bed and breakfast innkeeper, food columnist, photo stylist, publisher and event planner. Were it not for her, her husband and Insider publisher Chuck Leishman — with whom she moved to Humboldt in 2012 — would still have a completely bare office.

Chuck Johnson has been a resident of Humboldt County since 1989. His career in the audio/visual industry has led him to team up with some amazing clients such as the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institute, Grammy Awardwinning composers, musicians and just plain wonderful people. He currently produces The Humboldt Live Sessions, a music video series shot on locations all around the county. Keep Paddling Marna Powell’s kayak adventure

he universe is on Marna Powell’s side. “We were driving along Highway 101 and I looked up and saw this hill and I just pointed at it and said, ‘There, I want to live there.’ The next day that property went up for sale. It had never been for sale before.” The hill was just outside of Orick, Calif., close to where Marna now undertakes her life’s work as proprietor of Kayak Zak’s, a kayak rental and guided tour company on the shores of Stone Lagoon. Behind the desk of her tiny office is a poster of Redwood National Park, an aerial view that encompasses several fingers of verdant forest and blue-gray waters of Freshwater Lagoon, Stone Lagoon and Big Lagoon.

“This is basically my whole life right here,” she says, gesturing toward the picture. Powell is unprepossessing from a distance: average height, average build, with dark, wild hair. But when you enter her orbit, you’re immediately sucked in. She has a wide, toothy grin and a girlish goofiness to her. She wobbles between shyness and unfettered honesty, saying that she “doesn’t really know how to socialize.” At one point she gleefully refers to herself as a “crippled lady.” “I blew out my knee in 1972, back when the biggest concern they had was that your legs had to look pretty in a dress,” she says, adding, “I was never athletic. The leg wasn’t treated right, they did a bunch of different surgeries on it, but it didn’t heal right.” Powell discovered her passion for kayaking “by accident.” She came home one day with a sea kayak for her husband and,

after taking it out on the water, he asked if she’d like to try it. She shrugged and climbed in. “My life changed forever in that moment,” she says, raising her palms skyward and imitating the sound of a choir singing, “I can’t even explain — every time I get on the water, it’s magic.” That moment is one she tries to share. Trained as a sea kayak instructor with an adaptive permit, she has developed a reputation for helping people with injuries or disabilities explore the sport safely, modifying their techniques or craft to meet their needs. “People assume that I have a background in sports medicine or something, but not really, she says. “You really have to be MacGyver — just imagine and build things.” Adapting, creating and hard work have been themes

The house of her dreams, for example, the one on the hill she pointed to many years ago, started off as “the crappiest house in the nicest location with literally an acre of garbage around it.” But the universe had responded to her request, so Powell and her husband rolled up their sleeves and got to work. “Then the roof blew off the house,” she says, laughing.

Today the acre of garbage is an organic vegetable garden and the renovated house is a home to a menagerie of adopted animals as well as many foster children. Powell admits she has a soft spot for “problem children.” “I believe in following your gut through life,” she says, “I do that and I run away from the things I don’t want.” Powell studied business administration and accounting, as well as recreation management, and although she managed offices and did various jobs in her field, she always knew that she wanted to work for herself. “Everyone actually assumed I’d be an art major,” she says, grinning. “I’ve got a weird blend of left brain and right brain. I ended up unemployable because of all the weird little things I know how to do.” Her expertise on the water had grown to the point that a career built around her passion seemed inevitable. A lead kayak instructor with North Coast Adventures for six years and an ACA Level III Coastal Kayak instructor with an Adaptive Paddling Endorsement, she was constantly approached for advice and lessons. She founded Kayak Zak’s in 2005. For many years the business was run out of a travel trailer, but in 2013 Powell was offered the opportunity to set up a home base on the shores of Stone Lagoon. “It was a moldy, rat-infested mess,” she says, gesturing around the now tidy building that houses a tourism center and small outdoor gear shop.

“The [Park Service] had no idea when they offered me this building how dear this area is to me.” Today Kayak Zak’s is doing a bustling business catering to tourists and locals with a thirst for adventure. Visitors can rent equipment, take tours and lessons or stock up on last-minute camping gear and area maps. Powell says that the company is functioning more like a nonprofit, with a lot of revenue going toward special projects with groups such as Making Headway, a center for brain injury recovery. Powell was also instrumental in reopening the Ryan’s Cove campground. This primitive campground on the shores of Stone Lagoon is one of the most tranquil and scenic sites in the National Park System and is only accessible by hiking or kayak. It was shut down during a round of state budget cuts, but thanks to fundraising and sustained petitioning by Powell and other supporters, it reopened to the public in May of this year. Powell is philosophical about her success and her formula for happiness. “Sometimes I get these crazy ideas,” she says, “and I don’t believe I can’t do them.”

Humboldt Greens Teeing off around the county

f you crave a round of golf while in Humboldt County, you’re covered north, south, east and west, with options geographically and economically. Seven courses dot the area ranging from Willow Creek in far eastern Humboldt to Shelter Cove right on the Pacific Ocean in Southern Humboldt. Five are public courses: two nine-holers and three 18-hole tracks. Two are 18-hole private country clubs. Here’s a quick rundown to get you in the swing and your clubs out of the trunk. Fore!

Willow Creek Golf and Country Club

Beau Pre Golf Club

Designed and opened in 1960, this course provides an enjoyable, quick round of nine or 18. Located just a mile or two north of town, Willow Creek Golf and Country Club is public and affordable at $25 to $35. It’s a short course at 2,530 yards and par 35. Some of the greens are amazingly small and hard to hit, but it’s flat and easy to walk. Nestled in a mountain valley, the scenery is beautiful and the golfers friendly. In French, the name means the “beautiful prairie,” and many pretty holes wind up and down through pine, spruce and redwood forests on this 18-hole, public facility. Several of the highest elevation holes have views of the Pacific Ocean, which is only a mile away. Designed by golf pro and club owner Don Harling, it opened in 1967. It’s relatively short at about 5,880 yards from the men’s blue tees, 5,400 yards from the white and just over 5,000 yards from the women’s tees. However, this par-71 course will challenge your skills with its trees, water hazards, dog legs and sloped terrain. Green fees for 18 holes range from $31 during primetime on weekdays to $37 on the weekends. Savvy, cost-conscious golfers can enjoy a $20 “twilight” rate after 1 p.m. and $12 “super twilight” after 3 p.m. For tee times, call (707) 839-3412. 1777 Norton Road, McKinleyville.

Baywood Golf and Country Club There may not be a more gorgeous 18-hole golf course in Northern California than Baywood. This private country club synthesized two courses, Bayside and Baywood, into one in 1958. It’s a tale of two nines at Baywood, with the front nine more open off the tees than the sometimes treacherously tight and long back nine, the holes of which are lined with majestic redwood trees. Situated in a valley about five miles from the coast, the par-72 track is mostly protected from the wind. It is the longest course in the county, measuring 6,411 yards from the men’s blue tees, 6137 yards from the white tees and 5,803 yards from the women’s tees. It’s also rated the toughest golf course in the county by the Northern California Golf Association. Local non-members and out-of-towners can play this course with a member for $50. Travelers who belong to private country clubs can often get in for a round by having their golf pro call Baywood’s pro. These reciprocal green fees are $65. EUREKA

Eureka Golf Course This unpretentious, public 18-hole course features relatively short holes, flat terrain and not many hazards with which to grapple. It’s an enjoyable and well-maintained course, especially considering how much use it gets. The back nine offers more adventurous holes with some severe doglegs. The par-70 course measures just shy of 5,500 yards for the men and just beyond 5,200 yards for the women. The staff is relaxed and hospitable, and will go out of the way to help you have an enjoyable round. Green fees are affordable, ranging from $13 to $26. Shelter Cove Golf Links

Located right on the Pacific Ocean in the southeast corner of Humboldt County, the remote community includes an airstrip for small planes and a nine-hole course circling it. If you’re vacationing in Shelter Cove, the course gives a golfer a chance to play amid the sea air for only $10, which you put into an honor-system drop-box. FORTUNA

Redwood Empire Golf and Country Club This immensely enjoyable 18-hole private course has a unique, devilish 6-6-6 routing of holes: six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s. There are three par 3s, par 4s and par 5s on each nine, which mean ample opportunity for pars and birdies. Nine holes were originally established in 1927, but the course went bankrupt. It was resurrected in 1957 and the last nine holes were added in the late 1990s. The front and back are markedly different: The front is flatter and more protected from the wind, while the back nine has several holes, notably 12 and 13, that are exposed at an elevation of about 1,000 feet. The sometimes strong breezes make it more fun for the adventurous golfer to change his or her approach. The course is immaculately maintained, with fast and hard fairways in the summer, as well as the quickest greens in the county. It’s known as the most playable winter course in Humboldt because it drains so well in the rainy season. Local non-members and visitors can play this course with a member for $45. Like at Baywood, travelers who belong to private country clubs can often play this course if their golf pro calls Redwood’s pro. Green fees are $50. GARBERVILLE

Benbow Valley Golf Club The famous Benbow Inn just south of Garberville also owns a nine-hole course. The track features tight fairways, for which most golfers leave their drivers in their bags. For Southern Humboldt residents or travelers, Benbow offers a quick and affordable round of golf with green fees ranging from $20 to $30. Total nine-hole yardage for men is about 2,600 yards, for women, 2,500. The hotel also offers packages with a golf round included. For tee times, call (707) 923-2777. 7000 Benbow Drive, Garberville.

The Trinity River can be dangerous for visitors unused to its powerful current, not to mention the poison oak and occasional steep trails down to the riverbank. Opt for user-friendly spot Big Rock right outside the town of Willow Creek. Stock up on snacks at River Song Natural Foods, hang a left on US Highway 96 and look for the sign about a quarter-mile up the road. The Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge (1020 Ranch Road, Loleta) encompasses some of the most picturesque and biologically rich habitats in the world, providing sanctuary for the great diversity of birds, mammals, fish, amphibians, invertebrates and plants in the Humboldt Bay area. Stop into the visitor center, check out the dioramas and observation room, then stroll the 1.7-mile Shorebird Loop and bask in the beauty. right Drive north past Trinidad and you’ll discover Humboldt Lagoons State Park. Stone Lagoon sits in the middle and is perfect for beginning paddlers, especially those with a fondness for sighting shore birds and river otters. Shelter Cove, the gateway to the King Range Conservation Area, the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first national conservation area, is a jewel all on its own. The drive from Redway is a scenic thrill, and the aptly named cove offers a warm spot to stretch out and play. Slightly north is Black Sands Beach, where greywacke and shale combine to create the unusual color. Wildlife abounds and the views are superlative. The Punta Gorda Lighthouse site is at the end of a 3-mile, strenuous hike along the Lost Coast Trail, which begins at the Mattole Beach campground. The trail offers beautiful black-sand beaches, dunes and tide pools. A large portion of the hike is through fine, loose sand, and hiking beneath the cliffs can be dangerous at high tide. Tide information is usually posted at the trailhead. To reach the site from US Highway 101, take the Honeydew/Dyerville exit in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Travel west to Mattole Road in Honeydew to Lighthouse Road, almost an hour and a half trip. Travel five miles to Mattole Campground.

Heart and Sol (39010 U.S. Highway 299) serves deliciousness in the form of jalapeño cheese rolls — emphasis on the jalapeños and the cheese — cinnamon rolls dripping with icing (as they should be), and an excellent selection of gluten-free options, including coconut flour cupcakes and cinnamon donuts. No need to make your own, as Pasta Luego (791 Eighth St.) offers Italian subs and paninis — try the “Coco,” a sweetsavory-sharp combination of cotto, gorgonzola, apricot jam, roasted red peppers, arugula and vinaigrette. Buy some Italian nougat treats for after. Not too sweet and strangely addicting.

Located up in the Northtown (aka “student”) part of Arcata, stands Japhy’s (1563 G St.), a longtime favorite of both transitioning and permanent residents. The soups, noodles and fast turnaround are reminiscent of what you’d find in a big city, but with the emphasis on local and organic ingredients Humboldt is known for. Ask anybody and they’ll tell you to have the curry.

It’s often said that Humboldt has more artists per capita than any other region of California. Perhaps an anecdotal statistic, but step into the Sewell Gallery ( 423 F St., Eureka), where the work of over 50 of the region’s premier visual artists is on display in a warm, spacious lightfilled gallery and you’ll be an instant believer. Trinidad’s views are stunning, certainly, and stepping away from them might feel counterintuitive, but only for as long as it takes you to get through the door at the Strawberry Rock Gallery (343 Main St., Trinidad). A newer gallery on the scene, Strawberry Rock features both established and emerging Humboldt artists. Matt Beard’s art has been shown worldwide in galleries and magazines. The subject matter is typically beach and ocean in nature, with much of it capturing the vibrancy of the Humboldt coast. Stop by Beard Art Gallery (336 Grotto St., Eureka) to see fine art paintings, prints, T-shirts and more. A portion of sales goes to the nonprofit of the buyer’s choice through Beard’s AidCurrent project. The nonprofit American Indian Art and Gift Shop (241 F Street, Eureka) serves a couple of purposes. One is to exhibit the unique art created by over 40 local Indian artists. The second is to provide training to those needing work experience. Stop in and see baskets, jewelry and calendars made by Northern California tribal artisans.

Not Strictly for Tourists Blue Lake’s spirit is embodied in The Logger Bar, (510 Railroad Ave., Blue Lake) an institution that hit a sad patch a few years back, closed and then was eventually purchased by resident Kate Martin and restored through the almost-all-volunteer effort of community members. Saws and blades line the walls and floor, testifying to the area’s burly past, but the drink offerings include fine spirits and fresh herbs. Myers Flat on the Avenue of the Giants is not only known for the majestic redwood trees in the area, but also for the outstanding wines of Riverbend Cellars (12900 Avenue of the Giants). This extraordinary winery offers wine sampling at its tasting room, which is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Riverbend Cellars also offers a selection of specialty foods, picnic items and local art. The redwoods are always open and late fall can be a stunning time to visit. Just south of Orick, the national and state parks’ Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center (U.S. Highway 101 at Orick) provides orientation, information and trip-planning advice, plus books, maps, gifts and more. Peruse the displays, talk to a ranger, then launch into a forest exploration perfect for the day and your desires.

If walking is too mundane for you, why not saddle up and go by horseback? Redwood Trails Horse Rides and Redwood Creek Buckarettes (1000 Drydens Road, Orick) will take you up into the Redwood National Park’s old growth majesty with a trusty steed beneath you. The interpretive tour includes information on redwood ecology, local wildlife, flora and local history. Unwind from all the sightseeing with a soak or steam at Finnish Country Sauna and Tubs (495 J St., Arcata). Private outdoor hot tubs and sauna cabins allow for complete relaxation in an enchanted environment. On your way in and out, you’ll pass through Café Mokka, Humboldt County’s oldest coffeehouse, where you can find magazines of global interest, a warm fire and Scandinavian-style open-faced sandwiches. For a quick, easily accessible interaction with a breathtaking seascape, drive out alongside Orick’s Redwood Creek (from US Highway 101, take Hufford Road west) to the ocean. Park and stroll north. You’re now adjacent to the Reading Rock State Marine Conservation Area, part of California’s network of marine protected areas, and entering Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The mix of marine habitats means an abundance of wildlife above and beyond most experiences. Watch for whales, seals, sea lions and diving auklets around the water, nesting murres and cormorants along the rocks.

Before you explore the bountiful tide pools around Trinidad and Patricks Point, take the children to the HSU Marine Laboratory (570 Ewing St., Trinidad) where the seven aquaria, two touch tanks and other displays will introduce them to the various sea critters living in the lab and out in the greater world. Share the area’s seafaring history at the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum (77 Cookhouse Road, Samoa), where displays encompass everything from shipbuilding to shipwrecks. Learn about the first ships to enter Humboldt Bay, the lonely lives of lighthouse keepers and current restoration activities aligning the past with the future. Oooh, pretty things! Since 1990, Heartbead (830 G St., Arcata) has helped customers design and create their own jewelry. Children can pick from the thousands of beads ranging from elegant to playful, and then have the staff transform their selections into bracelets, necklaces or earrings — or get help for the kids to assemble masterpieces on their own. Either way, you’ll leave with a treasured, personal souvenir of your visit to Arcata Plaza. The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary provides more than just habitat to over 200 species of birds — it also serves as the City of Arcata’s innovative wastewater treatment facility. Older children may be impressed by the science of the marsh, younger ones will simply enjoy scampering along the 5.4 miles of trails. Everyone should stop into the interpretive center for activities and clues about which raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, shorebirds and wading birds you’re most likely to see.

Blue Ox Millworks (1 X St., Eureka) is a rarity — a fully functioning Victorian job shop which produces custom architectural millwork using antique woodworking machinery from the 1800s and early 1900s. Take the kids on a “back in the old days” tour featuring a demonstration of human-powered tools, a lathe room, print shop, textiles studio, mill and molder buildings, blacksmith shop, ceramics and stained glass studios, boat works and horse drawn carriages — then meet and greet the farm animals. Not every town has a multicultural bagel shop, but Humboldt’s beloved Los Bagels has a presence in both Eureka (403 Second St.) and Arcata (1061 I St.). Jewish and Mexican heritages join together with bagels and knishes alongside empanadas and chango bars. Pick up a copy of Natasha Wing’s children’s book Jalapeño Bagels for a charming interpretation of co-founder Dennis Rael’s childhood and inspiration for the bakery.

Larrupin Café 1658 PATRICKS POINT DRIVE, TRINIDAD This North Coast bohemian restaurant tucked away in Trinidad is a local legend with its generous plates and farm-to-table menu. The wild salmon is a favorite (market price), but the appetizer board that arrives first with a selection of cheese, seasonal fruit, local Cypress Grove chevre, house-cured lox and Larrupin sauce is what diners can’t wait to sample. The sauce, a dilly, sweet mustard, is the preferred accompaniment to smoked salmon among Humboltians, so much so that it shows up on other menus around town. But you’ll have to hit a local grocery store to pick it up, as it’s not sold at the restaurant ($6). Pace yourself in case the special bacon-wrapped scallop with limoncello beurre blanc is available ($14), and dig into a hearty plate of grilled local salmon brushed with lemon-dill butter and served with a wild and generous salad and grilled beets ($32).

Instead, the rustic/industrial-chic oyster bar showcases local products. You could dip into a single Kumamoto or Bucksport oyster ($2 raw, $3 broiled), or go all in with a platter of a dozen. The sweet, briny beauties straight from the bay are, of course, lovely on their own, but experiment and order a few with Humboldt Hotsauce. The Island Style (with guava, pineapple and banana and the kick of habañero pepper) and the Emerald sauce (tempered with cilantro, ginger and lime) are spirited additions to raw or cooked oysters, as well as a million other things. Grab a bottle for $6. Feeling the burn? No worries — a pint of a local microbrew should cool you off.

The sweet, briny beauties straight from the bay are, of course, lovely on their own, but experiment and order a few with Humboldt Hotsauce.

Bless My Soul Café 29 FIFTH ST., EUREKA That woman in the purple chef’s coat chatting with every customer like an old friend is known as Marie, or Sweet Mama Janisse, and that familiarity might be due to how many regulars the place has or the sudden intimacy that forms over truly good fried chicken ($13.95). Hers is not the usual — boneless and skinless, it’s meant to be dipped in her Soul Q Sauce, a tangy, just-spicyenough, onion-sweet barbecue sauce that will establish a regular place on your table at home ($5 bottle). Somebody at the table needs to order the seared Caribbean Ahi tuna with gala apples and caramelized onions ($20.95). And don’t skip the Voodoo Pudding (no matter how stuffed you are), a layered parfait of bread pudding and homemade chocolate pudding ($4.75). Carter House Restaurant 301 301 L ST., EUREKA Call ahead and see if you can get table five, a primo corner window with a view of the Carter House Inn’s Victorian architecture and the dining room. But whatever table you’re at, the steamed Manila clams in buerre monté, with pancetta, garlic and preserved lemon balances the rich with the lightly tart ($15). It brings out the best of these sweet clams harvested just a shell’s throw away. The fish special changes nightly, but with any luck you’ll catch the pan-roasted steelhead with succotash, fresh corn, dragon’s tongue beans and arugula pesto (market price). Vegetables, herbs and edible flowers grow in the kitchen garden, so expect great things, even from your garnish. Vegetarians can enjoy the jealous glances of carnivores over the creamy masa-stuffed pepper with chipotle adobo, pepita-cilantro pesto and crème fraiche ($23). The pepper is satisfyingly sweet against the bite of smoky chili, and you may have to defend the creamy filling against the forks of fellow diners. The wine list is epic, but try the hotel’s own label Table 5 White, a sauvignon blanc and semillion blend ($40 bottle), and Table 5 Red, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot blend ($50 bottle), and see if you can decide on just one to bring back with you.

ith so many bars, taprooms and wineries to choose from and so little daylight to spare, it’s hard to know where to start on the quest for the quintessential seasonal beverage. Rest assured, we’ve done the footwork for you. The Tomodachi at Tomo (708 Ninth St., Arcata) is a cool weather go-to, though it can also be served cold for those balmy, summer months (which we apparently have now). The mixture of Sho Chiku Bai sake and Takara Plum wine is a Tomo original. Translated from Japanese, tomodachi means “good friends.” It’s intended to be shared, but if you order the small, it›s pretty easy to selfishly toss down alone. The plum wine adds just enough By Dev Richards sweetness to cut through the potency of the sake without overindulging the sweet tooth. It settles nicely in the stomach, with or without the accompaniment of sushi rolls. Come October, the retro-cozy Speakeasy (411 Opera Alley, Eureka) brings its fall specialties out under its ceiling of winking stars. The Baked Pear, semi-translucent and steaming, is one of those drinks that will sneak up on you. The combination of Absolut Pears, DeKuyper Buttershots, house-made spiced simple syrup, lemon and a twist of orange has a deceivingly non-alcoholic taste. It’s more tart and less sweet than a mulled cider, and goes down so easily. Granted, the heat keeps you from gulping it too quickly, but once it cools, all bets are off. The Dia de los Muertos brings pumpkins into the limelight. If you’ve ever eaten a pumpkin pie and thought, “I’d sure like to drink this,” then you are in luck. The bartender fills the graham crackerrimmed martini glass with puréed pumpkin, Absolut Vanilla, Bailey’s Irish Cream, DeKuyper Buttershots and a dash of cream. It’s sweeter than the baked pear and probably isn’t the sort of drink you’d want to repeat through the evening (unless you like a sugar crash). But it’s perfect for capturing the essence of autumn.

Just north of Trinidad, Patrick’s Point State Park calls, with stunning vistas, traditional Yurok structures and the appropriately named Agate Beach. Farther up, Orick is is the hub for plenty of trails and camping possibilities. Start at the Kuchel Visitor Center, staffed by the National Park Service, and pick your Redwood National Park adventure, whether it’s the epic Tall Trees Grove, the dreamy Ladybird Johnson Grove, the Skunk Cabbage Trail or the must-see wonder of Fern Canyon.

Trinidad’s iconic lighthouse is a symbol of the town where Humboldt County’s fishing past lives on. Every day, the boats that dot the small harbor’s moorings scour the sea among dramatic, rocky outcroppings. For a look back, tour the Trinidad Museum, then stop at the smaller Memorial Lighthouse and take in the view and the sea air. Trinidad Art Night fills the little town with music, food and local artwork every first Friday of the month, and the annual Fish Festival and Blackberry Festival bring in folks from all over. Take a brisk walk along Trinidad’s newly refurbished pier (or a chance at the nearby casino) or stretch your legs along Trinidad State Beach up to peaceful College Cove.

Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Humboldt residents socked in by summer fog know that they can generally find truth and relief in Blue Lake’s motto: sunshine and sea air. Where the Mad River takes its final stretch toward the Pacific, a small community of 1,200 displays an international reach. Once sawmills ruled, but now the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater imports students from around the world to learn the craft of commedia dell’arte and perform dramas and old-school clowning year round. The schedule is packed during The Mad River Festival, a sprawling summer’s worth of theater and music events over six weeks. Depending on the season, those who are feeling lucky head for the casino or to fish for steelhead near the Mad River Fish Hatchery (also home to some popular swimming spots).

Willow Creek The town’s motto is “river fun in the mountain sun,” and it’s no joke. Willow Creek is hot enough for serious wine making or a cool dip in a Camp Kimtu swimming hole. The weather also means great produce at roadside stands. If you’re adventurous, you can throw on a vest and do some river rafting, and more leisurely types can fish or play a round of golf. Just keep your eyes peeled for a shadowy figure in the distance, because this is Bigfoot country. Skeptical? Swing into the China Flat Museum and explore the lore.

Eureka This place is full of stories. Even those of us who live among redwood giants look up now and then in amazement. Driving along the Avenue of the Giants shows you something new around every corner, something photos and video can’t quite do justice. We lean on words like “majesty” and “breathtaking,” but you kind of have to be there under La the ancient, towering canopy to really ra be e get it. Take Cr it slow and plan to make a ee k few stops. (Are you not going to stop and see chainsaw sculptures? Please.) From kitsch to fine woodwork, the shops along the Avenue are their own local attraction. South is Garberville, where you can hit the farmers market for an afternoon treat and maybe catch a show. The nearby Mateel Community Center regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals, such as Reggae on the River. Cre
