Fall and All There are those of us who smile through spring and summer but secretly count the days until fall, when we can feel a little snap in the wind, pull on something wooly and sip cocoa. and rankings can be poorly received. Take mythology: When Marsyas and Arachne claimed to be numero uno at playing the flute and weaving, respectively, the Greek gods punished their hubris with flaying-to-death/transformation into a spider. When Paris went on the record regarding which goddess he found most beautiful, the resultant blowback ignited total war and brought about the fall of Troy. When Sonny Wong, on the other hand, was voted Best Artist in a tough field of competitors by the North Coast Journal’s readers this year, there was nary a murmur of dissent. His hustle comes in at least 31 flavors, as befits a painter/graffiti writer/hip-hop head/graphic designer who’s been immersed in beats since before your time. You might have encountered Wong’s art through the graphic design work he’s done for Humboldt clients, or through the gonzo caricatures he turned out like clockwork for every cover of Savage Henry magazine from 2010 until earlier this year. profile piece Wong completed this July in Old Town Eureka as part of the Eureka Street Art Festival, he’s arrived at a whole new level of name recognition vis-a-vis the general public. I caught up with the artist in Blue Lake, where he was completing a commissioned mural at a client’s house. A single-track gravel road rose abruptly from the highway. On an outdoor deck on top of the hill, the 45-year-old Wong was putting the final touches on a technicolor view of the Pacific off Houda Point. It showed a corduroy set of waves rolling in, Camel Rock’s double hump silhouetted unmistakably against the setting sun. The new Wong mural overlooking a parking lot at Sixth and G in downtown Eureka shows an angular, bearded, silver-haired hipster (“it’s really a platinum beard”) who bears some striking similarities to the artist himself. This cat appears fully engrossed in his idiosyncratic task manipulating a tiny schooner in a bottle. Inside the bottle a Technicolor sunset somehow rages and a sea serpent rears its head. Visible for nearly a city block in all directions, this work is the biggest “hand painting” Wong has done to date. “I always wanted to do huge,” he said. “I had the idea that I could tie (this project) together with Humboldt Bay, make it about this shipbuilder.” Execution was a challenge, because of the wall surface — “really old, flaky redwood” mounted on concrete. While Wong prefers to complete the outlines first, he had to work “backwards” here: “I had to do the fill first, then came in and sharpened up the lines at the end because of the gnarly surface.” This technique was more like that of graffiti writers, who tend, he said, “to do big fill colors, then draw the outline.” Wong prepared to tackle the wall’s expanse by drawing on sources of inspiration old and new. As a kid growing up in Yreka and Santa Rosa, he said, he “watched a lot of cartoons,” everything from anime to Scooby-Doo. His style was shaped by hanging out at punk shows, skate parks and graffiti yards. He also credits the local work of muralist Duane Flatmo and a series of hip-hop side projects undertaken with musical collaborator The Sheik. At ease in graffiti writing subcultures since he started frequenting Santa Rosa graffiti yards in the 1990s, Wong is increasingly invested these days in a parallel but separate endeavor: painting narrative. “In graffiti, you’re writing your name ... while in this style of work, you’re using painting to tell a story.” The mural at Sixth and G streets is “a snapshot of a story” with its builder of tiny ships, a

genial hobbyist/maniac with an obsession for miniaturization. Some of the linework in this piece shows the influence of those classic Hanna-Barbera animation cels (zoinks!), while other parts recall Japanese woodblock prints, but the nervous energy that percolates through everything in sight, as though a tide of espresso were building just beneath the surface, is very much Wong’s own. Everyone’s got an opinion on what it means; it

seemed to me the figure’s activity made tongue-in cheek allusion to Eureka’s romanticized past, miniaturizing and enshrining the rep the city cherishes as a salty, foggy waterfront dive populated with immigrants, sailors, hunters, fishers, basket weavers, loggers, fugitives, shamans, tree-huggers, libertines, animists and renegade intellects. Some fans who are familiar with Wong’s paintings, magazine covers, live shows and recordings may not be aware of his other creative outlet: He’s been gainfully employed as a graphic designer ever since graduating from Humboldt State University in 2004. “I’m good at computers,” he explains, “and I taught myself Photoshop and Illustrator.” Wong has been working in cannabis even longer, since the 1990s, when the illicit market was the only kind there was. For almost a decade, his Savage Henry covers graced dispensaries up and down the coast, becoming a fixture of off-the-grid cabins all over the Emerald Triangle. His design work influenced the look of Humboldt’s rapidly evolving cannabis industry during the 2010s, when it was undergoing major upheavals en route to legal status. Now he’s one of the designers working to develop a new visual vocabulary for the local industry, one that goes way beyond tie-dye and dank nugs. Now that cannabis is “in the process of becoming normalized,” he says, niche marketing is the

name of the game. Increasingly there’s no single approach to design that says “cannabis,” but many. “There’s going to be stuff geared at soccer moms and stuff geared at young guys who play football. You put the same exact product in a different box,” Wong said, “and all of a sudden other people are buying it.” Post-legalization, his outlook on the brave new world of legal weed is positive. “I’m not seeing mom-and-pop operations going away,” he said, referring to an outcome many in the local industry had feared. He does not lament the loss of the outlaw mystique formerly associated with illicit market cultivation in these parts. Change was necessary, he says; as a parent of four, he can take satisfaction in the fact that California cannabis “is now way more regulated than food.” Especially, he joked, “now that all my kids are teenagers.” When Wong’s not working design jobs or making murals or rhyming over beats, he can be found painting outdoors en plein air, oftentimes

alongside The Sheik. “We find a beautiful spot and set up our camping chairs — we’ve done this all over Humboldt County.” For a graphic designer accustomed to working in close consultation with clients, plein air painting is “rewarding and free” by comparison. “You’re doing it only for yourself.” But Wong also appreciates the built-in creative constraints — particularly the time limit — that the outdoors imposes, precisely because he’s someone who enjoys getting lost in the process. “When I’m in the studio working something up, I’ll work on it for six months. I get real quiet, I get in my own space. Arcataâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest attraction is competitive, cheaper than therapy and right down the street. All you need to enjoy an unconventional twist on family fun is a pair of closed-toed shoes and to embrace your inner lumberjack at the Hatchet House Throwing Club off of Sixth Street in Arcata. Lauren Fischer and her husband, Michael, were traveling for a reunion in San Diego around Christmas when they discovered humboldtinsider.com

adventure feature an ax-throwing range. Fischer said the experience was perfectly suited to her and her competitive family of former athletes. The couple couldn’t shake the experience from their heads and decided it was the perfect business to bring to woodsy Humboldt County. “We just kept thinking about it for a few months and then it all depended on if we could find the location and get the city to agree,” she said. In what used to be the Bob Johnson Paint building and then Northcoast Horticulture Supply, the Fischers hit a bullseye for their endeavor. Similar to bowling, the club offers nine throwing lanes where you can throw by yourself or in a group of four to six people. Throwing times vary from a half hour to an hour, but don’t overestimate the sweat you can work up hurling an ax. The lanes are $15 per hour per person, $10 for 30 minutes and $50 per hour for groups of four to six people. Don’t worry: You don’t have to commit to a longer time slot right away and can pay halfway through your hour if you’re tapped out. Each lane has a bullseye with concentric numbered circles, like a

dart board. There are also two circles to the top right and left of each bullseye known dramatically as “killshots.” The rings are numbered from one to four to serve as a point system for games. A bullseye is worth six points and killshots are worth eight. After you sign a disclaimer, one of the coaches will hand you a wood-handled ax. Once you’re set up at a lane, the friendly and encouraging coach will walk you through how to successfully and safely sink an ax blade into your wooden target. “So ax throwing is all about where you stand,” Fischer said. She explained that you’d never walk in front of someone who is throwing an axe and you also don’t want to stand behind someone as they wind up for their throw. It’s important to keep an eye on the ax after it hits the target because it can bounce off the wood and back toward you. Fischer stepped into her sweet spot, the distance from which she knows she can give her ax room to make one full rotation in order to stick solidly in the wood. Once you find the right distance, you can work on your aim. When throwing you have two

standard options: the one-handed throw or the two-handed throw. What matters most is what feels best for you. The wooden-handled axes are league certified, weighing 2.3 pounds. Depending on your strength and size, you can choke up or down on the handle of the ax. As simple as throwing a ball with less motion,

Evan Allen, a local member of the Yurok Tribe, said throwing his first hatchet was invigorating. “I didn’t know throwing axes was a thing or a business you could provide,” he said. “I felt powerful but it was also a little intimidating because sometimes they flew back at you. I never felt like my life was in danger but I was definitely a little scared for my toes,” he said with a smile. The venue is for all ages, with sitting spaces at a safe distance and even toys for toddlers. It doesn’t matter if you’re short, tall or athletic. The coaches at the Hatchet House Throwing Club, all thoroughly trained on safety practices and throwing technique, are confident they can get you throwing an ax. Coach Isaac Mandler said, “We take a lot of pride in making sure people can not only hit the target with the ax but hopefully land a couple bullseyes in the process.” He added that each coach has a special trick shot they love to teach customers. One trick shot favorite is a back-

throwing an axe relies a lot on the motion of your arm, your grip and when you let go. Take all your stress, anger or frustration and feed them into your throwing arm. With your eyes on the bullseye, bring the ax back just past your head and release. There’s something very rewarding about feeling the weight of the ax leave your fingers before watching it take a full spin and sink itself in the wood. After a couple of warm-up throws and some suggested chang-

ward golf throw. Facing away from the bullseye and with an altered grip, you toss the ax casually behind you and, hopefully, sink it. Coach Lauren Ayala said she'd never thrown axes before this job. “I had played lots of sports and saw this job posting … and thought I would be good at it,” she said. Now you can catch her on the club’s Instagram practicing trick throws in between helping customers. The club offers ax-throwing twists on classic games like the basketball game HORSE where you have to match shots with your partner. For the more serious, the Hatchet House Throwing Club is modeled after and set up to be certified by the World Axe Throwing League. “We have 12 year olds all the way to 82-year-old women who have already signed up for the league in September,” Mandler said. “Anybody can throw an ax.”

fronts and alleyways into a giant dinosaur, Japanese cityscape, ship in a bottle, ocean waves and psychedelic fantasia. Eureka, which prides itself on its support for the arts, regularly ranks among the top 10 in John Villani’s 100 Best Small Art Towns in America. Murals are one reason why. Not

Tomo Forever Arcata’s sushi institution

By Jennifer Fumiko Cahill Photographs by Amy Kumler Styling by Lynn Leishman When Joe Doherty first looked at the cavernous restaurant space in the historic Hotel Arcata — a pair of joined rooms that dwarfed Tomo’s previous Eureka location — he told founder Fukiko Marshall it was too big. “I’ll fill it,” she replied. Then-manager Doherty was skeptical. “I said, ‘You’ll never fill this place.’ It’s funny, I was wrong. I’ve been wrong for 25 years.” The Japanese restaurant and sushi bar is an institution on the Arcata Plaza that indeed fills up nightly, as it has in its various incarnations since Marshall opened it in 1984. The kanji for tomo on the sign means “friendship,” and its following is loyal. There’s a crowd of Humboldt diners that judge the depth of someone’s local roots by how long they’ve been going to Tomo. Doherty himself has been working there for 28 years, starting out as a dishwasher when he was 21 and working his way up to rolling sushi, managing and eventually buying the business from Marshall a decade ago. “Fukiko was amazing to work with … it was just inspiring,” he says. restaurant has carved out a niche for itself with a warm, casual vibe and a steady, unpretentious menu to which its clientele remains devoted. “We have people who eat there four days a week,” says Doherty, adding with a chuckle, “Some people just don’t like to cook.” Tomo’s menu retains much of what Marshall, who also founded and later sold Sushi Spot down the street, established. It takes full advantage of the fresh catches available from Humboldt’s waters, like ling cod, octopus, salmon, tuna and oysters. Likewise, the smoked albacore and tofu come from local producers Fish Brothers and the Tofu Shop, respectively. The nigiri sampler is a showcase for local maguro, albacore and lemon-cured salmon, as well as imported hamachi ($13.95). The bouquet sashimi presentation of the chirashi bowl features the day’s selection, which recently included uni, a rose of maguro and unusually tender octopus ($19.95). Among the makizushi specialty rolls is the modestly named No. 4, with lemon-cured salmon, avocado, green onion and the smoky crunch of spicy salmon skin ($7.95). The classic Spider roll with tempura fried softshell crab, tobiko and avocado is well executed, as is the inside-out house Paradise roll, stuffed with tempura prawn and cucumber, and blanketed in shiso leaves, tobiko and hamachi slices dipped in lemon ($13.95). food&drink mond butter and tempura yam ($8.95) raises your eyebrows, it’s there for the kids (mostly), who, as Doherty points out, often determine where the family goes out to eat. “I think we’re a real family restaurant,” he says. “I just want to keep it really casual and fun.” The approach is a far cry from the formal minimalism that can sometimes make Japanese restaurants elsewhere feel a little cold, and has yielded a multi-generational following. “We’re just such a tight-knit little family up here. You just have to treat people right. ... I’ve watched so many children grow up from babies to asking for a job.” Tomo itself is a family, after all, with staff like floor manager Mimi Wagner on board for 22 years and former staff leaving the nest to start their own ventures around town. Fortunately, most of the staff was able to come back after a fire and resulting smoke damage closed the restaurant for three and a half months last year. It was a long enough closure to spell death for the average restaurant but customer loyalty prevailed. “We were busy again right off the bat,” says Doherty. Whether on a weeknight or a busy Arts! Arcata evening, you’ll find regulars of all ages filling the room as Marshall predicted. “It’s like hosting a party every night,” says Doherty, “and we just never know who’s going to come.”

INGREDIENTS 10 cups all-purpose flour 11/4 teaspoon baking soda 5 tablespoons baking powder 5 teaspoons salt 13/4 cups butter (very cold) cut into small cubes 5 cups buttermilk ½ cup sugar

METHOD Heat oven to 450 F. Mix all dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Add butter and hand mix just until incorporated. Add buttermilk and hand mix again until dough is just firm enough to shape. Do not over mix. Remove dough from bowl onto a lightly floured surface and use a lightly floured rolling pin to gently roll dough out to a thickness of two fingers (about 1 ½ inch thick). Cut out the biscuits. At Greene Lily they cut the biscuits with a water glass dusted with flour (grandma-style) but you can use a floured biscuit cutter if you have one. Transfer biscuits to an ungreased sheet pan and bake for 10 to15 minutes. Chef’s note: The secrets to a good biscuit are to work quickly, have the butter and buttermilk very cold (you can put the butter in the freezer before you cut it) and don’t overwork the dough.

Jennifer Metz, who co-owns the inn and bar with her sister, Rebecca Rex, and their spouses Tim and Tammy, explains that her cat was the original Phatsy Kline. She points to a portrait just above the backbar of the fluffy feline yawning, undisturbed by the quickly growing crowd. The late Phatsy also manifests in painted pawprints traipsing down the length of the bar. Specialty cocktails include offerings such as the Cherry Poppins, made with Sipsmith gin, vanilla liqueur, vermouth, cherry jam, lemon and rose water, and a take on a classic French 75 called the Fench 007, with Hendrick’s gin, sparkling rosé, St. Germain and lemon, as well as one of the best Old Fashioneds — dotted with little gold stars and garnished with a scorched orange peel — that I’ve had. There’s a menu of non-alcoholic mixed drinks and a large selection of snack boards featuring local and carefully curated items like the cheese platter, the housemade hummus, dolmas and local Henry’s Olives on the Mezemerize Me platter, or the house pickled vegetable platter. The Fisherman’s Daughter features smoked salmon and local wild albcore, along with goat cheese and mustard-dill Larrupin sauce, and if you stop in on a Wednesday, there’ll be fresh Humboldt Bay oysters on offer. There are dessets, too, a flourless dark chocolate torte among them. The couple sitting next to me said this is their first visit to Phatsy’s and proclaimed it as their new favorite site for date night. They argued playfully about who ordered the “girlier” drink and raved about their charcuterie board, which comes with local Brio bread. My new friends went back to their date, customers continued to pour in through the front door and Jess continued to gracefully mix drinks like potions with vials and containers of the house-made shrubs, simple syrups and bitters, while the Justin Time band set up for a set. This historic building, which has survived so many eras, is settling into its newest life, with easy rapport and an interesting menu — the coolest hotel bar I have ever been to.

Whether it’s a gorgeous summer weekend or a wet, socked-in Tuesday afternoon, Humboldt County’s Avenue of the Giants doesn’t disappoint. Known by locals as “the Ave,” this 31-mile stretch was formerly part of U.S. Highway 101 until a more direct route was developed in 1960. As automobiles and logging trucks left to zip along the main highway, the Avenue of the Giants remained as a historic relic and a glimpse into slower and simpler times. The coastal redwoods that have grown quietly for centuries in this pocket of the world are as enormous and enchanting as you can imagine. The One Log House in Garberville lets visitors check out treehouse living in a 7-by-32-foot log chamber that once toured the country before retiring alongside 101. Farther down the Ave are short, well-marked loop trails suited even to the novice hiker. Or, you can

stretch your legs in the forest at the F.K. Lane Grove on a 15-minute stroll under the dense redwood canopy. Bring extra layers to stay warm in the shade and leave Fido in the car — dogs are not allowed on trails. If your timetable allows for recreation and you come during summer, a splash in the Eel River will cool you down, as will the quaint shops and cafés dotting the road selling cold drinks and ice cream. Those hankering for more refined refreshments can taste local wines along the avenue; keep your eyes peeled for signs around Redway. Finally, if your visit isn’t complete without navigating your car through a tree, stay alert around Myers Flat and you’ll pay a small fee for the bragging rights. The Ave offers visitors a chooseyour-own-adventure experience — any drive along the road grants views of some of the region’s most beloved trees and is peppered with nostalgic gift shops and historic logging towns.
