Old-fashioned Summer Fun Remember summer when you were a kid? Whether you were roasting
marshmallows at camp or splashing in a city pool, you probably weren’t in a hurry. Summer felt long and you stretched out in it like a backyard hammock, knowing you had all the time in the world. Well, the summer sunshine, mild and mellow, hangs around through the fall here in Humboldt, so no need to rush. This summer, we’re going back to the good old days, taking a dip in a swimming hole, fishing off the dock in Trinidad, savoring a slice of homemade pie and riding the Ferris wheel at an old-fashioned county fair. All that — plus river rafting and more — await you in “Perfect Trips.” If you’re planning to bet on the races at the Humboldt County Fair, we’ve got a guy with a hot tip or two. In this issue we profile Rod Kausen, a racing aficionado and commentator who’s been going to the track since before he could see over the betting counter. Grab your racing form and catch his passion for the ponies. Ready to get off the beaten path? Two wheel it through the twists and turns of our county's trails with a crew of dedicated mountain bikers. We’re drafting behind them for a tour of escapes — some of them high in the mountains and others just minutes from the center of town. Wear a helmet. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, we’ll take you down the road for a nostalgic chili dog and shake. Of course, if you don’t want to come inside just yet, we’ll show you some sunny tables to grab a pint of local craft beer or cider, some smoked tri-tip or maybe some more pie. We’ll also take you to a couple of our beloved dive bars — revered institutions — for a Bloody Mary and a round of ping pong. If your summer projects back home include some gardening, you can make all that weeding and digging in the sun a little cooler. “H
ere you go, darlin.” The waitress sets a BLT and fries in front of Rod Kausen and returns to the kitchen for a bottle of ketchup. Bacon hangs lackadaisically from neat bread triangles. “You don’t mind if I eat?” Kausen asks. We’re meeting on what Kausen calls his “busy day off.” He wears a lot of hats. He’s been out bidding a house painting job for an old friend in Ferndale, and is freshly returned home from a high school track meet in Berkeley. Kausen is in the final months of a 35-year career as a teacher and track and field coach at Fortuna High School. He says he’s taught everything during his time at FHS, from driver’s ed to psychology. “But I’ve been doing it a long time. I’ve had a good gig.” He might open a food truck when he retires. Or a dog kennel. Or maybe he’ll be a writer. Or a DJ. Or whip out his guitar and start a band. “I don’t know what I’m gonna do. It’s really weird. It’s kind of like a whole new act.” No matter what his second career brings, Kausen will always go to the races. From that untethered place between the chapters of his life, Kausen says his passion for horse racing has been a constant since his early years. “It was my first love,” he says. It all started in his hometown of Ferndale, where both of his parents were born. “My mom and dad liked the races, my mom in particular.” He grew up attending horse races not just in Ferndale but all over the place, and came to

understand the intricacies of the sport. “I liked it. I got to know it really well.” In time, he got a summer job taking racing photos for a local newspaper and still does race analysis on ESPN. He says humbly, “So, I’m one of the guys that I guess people think of as understanding the local races.” He likes “little beat-up tracks” just as much as the swanky scene at Santa Anita and Saratoga. “We vacation at the horse races.” Kausen says, admitting, “My wife would probably like to vacation elsewhere but, I just, you know, love horse racing.” Last summer, Kausen wrote a piece for the North Coast Journal about his lifelong love affair with the sport of kings. It hums with a sepia-tinted nostalgia that buckles a reader at the knees. Beginning with the Proustian trigger of cigar smoke, he recalls “Gaining entrance to the races as a kid by climbing the fence between the Ferndale football field and the far side stables,” and “the two lady ushers upstairs, one tall, one short, both dressed in red, white and blue, who ushered us kids out of the reserved box seats; and my first big winning score, a $2 exacta that paid $749 in the summer of 1973 just before my senior year at Ferndale High.” Kausen was a “town boy.” This means he didn’t grow up on one of the many dairy farms in the verdant fields outlying Ferndale. Instead, he spent his boyhood carousing the village with his buddies. His family has lived in Ferndale and the immediate surrounds for generations. “I’m related to a lot of people,” he says. “We’re an old local family.” His ancestors immigrated from Ireland and Germany, but mostly from Switzerland, “They came over as dairy people and that’s what they did.”
Perhaps the penchant for horse racing is in his blood. The town of Ferndale has hosted the races since 1896, it’s a mainstay of the town’s rich history. “It’s our slice of Americana,” Kausen says, noting that along with the simple pleasures of living in small town America, the tradition of horse racing is fading fast. “It’s a dying sport,” Kausen muses. For a man who is constantly bumping into a medley of former students, co-workers and childhood friends, the races are a solo endeavor. “I love going to Safeway. I know everybody.” He laughs. “But you need your other time, too.” He finds that time at the races. “I don’t usually want anybody to go with me. I wander. I walk. I hide.” He rubs his head and explains, “You can be very private in a crowd of people.” Kausen says a perfect day at the track starts the night before, when you have a racing form in your back pocket and, “Even if it’s mostly luck, you feel like you’ve figured it all out.” While he appreciates the beauty of the sport, he really likes the gambling part. He’s had some good hits over the years. “I love the feeling of walking out of the races having done very well.” He stops and considers what he just said and continues, “I even like the feeling of walking out with hard losses.” He finishes up his sandwich, “It’s the highs and the lows. It makes me feel alive.” This summer marks the 120th year of the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale, which runs from Aug. 18-28. The bed of the black pick-up truck is loaded with mountain bikes. Front wheels draped over the tailgate, back wheels buried in helmets, shoes and riding gear. The riders load into the cab and head up Fickle Hill to start their day. The group is eager to push their limits and enjoy a fun day out on the trail. Brett Watts, 31, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter flight mechanic, has been in Humboldt County for three years and has helped bring together a group of young, local riders who share their love of mountain bikes. The group spends their time outside work and college classes building and riding trails that offer a different flavor of riding to the local mountain bike community. “Some people get excited climbing technical stuff, some people want to go fast and improve on their time, but for the group that I ride with and the trails that I build, time or climbing is not what we’re after. We’re after just good turns, big jumps, and high speed,” Watts says. This enthusiastic group of riders has helped bring a new level of excitement to the local mountain bike community through dynamic trails and a tight-knit friendship. Watts believes that the North Coast has unique potential for mountain bike specific trails and hopes that sharing it with new riders will help expand the trail systems. “You’re on a super quiet mode of transportation and you’re just buzzing through the redwoods,” Watts says with a smile after a long day of riding with friends on his favorite trail behind the Redwood Curtain. “You’re with these trees that are insanely tall — of course you’re happy — your freakin’ grandma would be stoked to do it ... your grandma’s grandma would love to do it!” For riders visiting Humboldt for the first time, there are some great trail systems to check out. With easily accessed trails on the coast and destination trail systems in the mountains, Hum-

boldt offers riders a wide variety of single track to experience what the North Coast has to offer. The Arcata Community Forest, or ACF (Redwood Park entrance at East 14th Street, Arcata), is a great place to start. This trail network spans from West End Road on the north end of Arcata, all the way across Fickle Hill, dropping into Sunny Brae. With approximately 790 acres of city-managed forest, the community has worked hard to develop a diverse network of trails. Popular single track sections behind the Humboldt State campus, like Trail 13 and the South Janes Creek Loop, offer beginner to advanced riders a series of windy turns, rollers and flowy descents through second-growth redwood forest. The southern side of the ACF boasts a more steep and technical topography. The Sunny Brae directional trail is a great option for intermediate to advanced riders who are looking for a high speed downhill trail. With bermed turns and small jump options, riders can test their skills without risking collision with oncoming traffic. This side of the forest also features the Beeth Creek Loop, which takes trail users through second-growth redwood forest, small tributaries and moderately challenging single track. Humboldt Redwoods State Park is located about 40 miles south of Eureka on the Avenue of the Giants. Although its trails are mostly closed to mountain bikers, there is one multi-use loop that attracts riders looking for an escape into

old-growth redwood groves. The Look Prairie Thornton loop is a 13-mile single track loop for cross country riders (Mattole Road). With 2,700 feet of climbing, riders can expect a hard workout, but the flowy and fun descent through the forest makes the hard work pay off. Even farther south toward Shelter Cove in Southern Humboldt lies Paradise Royale in the King Range Conservation Area (Tolkan campground). With the oversight of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA), trail builders designed a 12-mile directional loop with 2,500 feet of climbing. The trail takes riders across creeks, to the top of Kings Peak with breathtaking views and flying down the other side on a wide-open downhill trail. It offers visitors well-maintained pay-by-the-day campsites with potable water and is only 4 miles from the small coastal town of Shelter Cove. Aside from the main loop, the trail system has an additional out and back trail that links up with the loop as well as a small skills park near the campsite with beginner to advanced line options. The skills park features small to large
jumps, berms and wooden wall rides and bridges. Paradise Royale is a great system to visit for mountain bikers passing through Humboldt County. The most recently developed area and arguably the best for mountain bikers is the Lacks Creek trail system (Pine Ridge Parking Area off State Route 299). About an hour drive from Arcata, the BLM-managed land offers multi-use and mountain bike specific trails all built with bicycles in mind. The trail system currently boasts over 10 miles of single track that wind up and down the steep mountainside into Redwood Valley. Trails like Tomfoolery and Stormy Saddle flow through tan oak groves, restored meadows and pine forests while overlooking western views of the Pacific. Lacks Creek has easy to advanced trails, including a jump line and a downhill specific trail. For mountain bikers looking to get away from town for a day, Lacks is the perfect place. Camping is available, but check with the Arcata BLM office (825-2300) about campfires. Be sure to bring water, as there is none available.

the The Benbow Historic Inn, a circa 1926 landmark on the
Redwood Highway in Southern Humboldt County, is kicking off an ambitious expansion this summer, one that will draw creatively on its past and complete the original plans of its designers. Over its 90 years, the Tudor-style luxury inn has hosted the likes of Clark Gable, Joan Fontaine, Basil Rathbone, Eleanor Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Cher and the King of Jordan. The Benbow family — all nine brothers and sisters — helped with the construction and operation of the inn in the early days. The family also constructed the Benbow Dam, a power station, and the nearby Benbow Golf Course and RV Park. However, the stock market crash of 1929 prevented them from building a planned second wing to complement the one on the west side. While the family managed to hold on to the property and thrive for decades, they eventually sold it in 1962. Since then it has changed hands several times, regularly earning four-diamond ratings and top awards from Wine Spectator for its menu. Still, the east wing remained a dream, until now. “We’re going to finish what the Benbows were not able to finish,” said John Porter, co-owner of the inn since 1994. “Our goal is to make the renovations look as though they had always been this way.” The $10 million project will include a revamped lobby, a swanky Wallace & Hinz cocktail bar, an upgraded kitchen and a three-story wing with an elevator and additional guest and meeting rooms. A historic annex nearby will be overhauled to serve as a confer-

ence center for up to 150 people. Despite adding modern conveniences, the owners, architects and builders are working closely together to blend the renovations seamlessly into the original architectural features, ensuring that the inn retains its status on the National Register of Historic Places. Those efforts include studying architectural renderings from the inn’s famed designer Albert Farr, poring over historic documents and photos, and interviewing descendants of the inn’s original owners, some of whom still live nearby. Teresa Porter, John’s wife and former Humboldt County Historical Society executive director serves as the inn’s historian and will decorate the interior with period displays and furnishings, as well as keepsakes from the Benbows. “Carol [Benbow Bickler] and I are having such a blast doing this,” she said. And while they’re keeping it 1926-real, workers used a backhoe to break ground, rather than the iron, horse-powered Fresno scraper used by the Benbows. That antique remains on site as a reminder of the old days. The year-long development will also allow the hotel and restaurant to welcome everyone, improving access for guests with disabilities. That includes wheelchair access in the form of an entrance and rooms that comply with the

The parents are now in their 90s and their kids want to bring them back,” Porter said. “Soon they can do that with ease.” Rest assured, the inn will remain open during the construction, which is slated to finish in spring of 2017. Outdoorsy Type Crisp currents, placid swimming holes, and ripe orbs of purple berries. The Mad River, despite its name, doubles as a zone of happy. Pack a picnic, towels, your Mason jar for berry-picking and a few quarters for fish food. Take State Route 299 to Blue Lake and drive through town to Hatchery Road. Cruise past Mad River Brewing Company (river odysseys first, beer later), tool down Hatchery a couple miles and take the left fork into the Mad River Fish Hatchery. Park free till sundown. Buy some fish pellets at the gumball machine-like dispenser for a quarter and fling them over long concrete tanks of silvery steelhead fishlings. Access the river by walking across the hatchery zone or taking a trail past the fish ladders. Fill your jar with blackberries but beware of poison oak. Swimming holes dot both sides of the easyto-cross river. Just remember currents
can change quickly and turn dangerous combined with cold temperatures — enjoy your dip, but swim with caution. Even with a rented pole and tackle, you’ll feel like a local as you compete for a fishing spot on Trinidad Pier. A one-day fishing permit goes for $15.12 at a license agent like Pacific Outfitters, any CVS store, or online at www.wildlife. ca.gov. Gear rents for $20 at Salty’s Supply Co. on Main Street in Trinidad. Possible catches? Perch, rockfish or ling cod, Pacific tomcod and jacksmelt. As you cast off into the mesmerizing waves, tourists may pester you with questions about what you’re catching. Be friendly or be taciturn. You are Trinidad. You are one with the bay. Paddleboard Humboldt Bay, gliding across the flat waters along the shores, your feet planted on a wide surfboard. Gently paddle to propel your board
toward Indian Island for a view of egrets, cormorants, blue herons or maybe seals. Watch your balance! Stand-up paddleboarding is an intense workout — cardio and core — that forces the pursuit of equilibrium. Less than stable? Then the sport allows you to cool off frequently by plopping into the bay. Lucky for you, a wetsuit is included in the paddleboard rental package. Beginners can sign up for lessons with Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center (921 Waterfront Drive, Eureka) or take the short lesson included with a $25 equipment rental. Humboat Kayak Adventures (Dock A on the Woodley Island Marina, Eureka) also offers equipment rentals including boards, paddles, wetsuits and personal flotation devices, as well as lessons. Both locations give you direct access to the bay so you don’t have to hoist a board atop your compact car.

Foodies Coconut cream, cherry cheesecake, lemon-blueberry, pecan — all hand crafted by a piemaker with decades of experience. Rich, sweet fillings and crust that melts on your tongue. Hungry yet? The Palm Café (121130 US Highway 101) in Orick — that burly gateway to the Redwoods — is a global go-to for pie. Every day, 365 days a year, 91-year-old owner Martha Peals and/or her personally trained piemakers bake 10 flaky round pastries — generally five cream and five fruit varieties. A favorite is the strawberry rhubarb pie, made with local produce. Slices are $4.25 until 8 p.m. or the supply runs dry. Get a whole pie for $20. If that’s your foodie fantasy, call ahead. Here’s some serious farm-to-table, garden-to-grill: Rent a tidy, not-toorustic guest cabin in Pepperwood and enjoy the bonus of tasty tomatoes and cucumbers from the family garden. The Krebs family runs Flood Plain Produce (30873-30901 Avenue of the Giants, Scotia) and its guest house — you might have seen their veggies at the farmers market. Fresh feels fab, especially if you’ve been out hiking in the redwoods. That’s right, you’ll be exploring. The cabin is surrounded on three sides by Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The cabin ($200 for the first night, $175 subsequent nights) includes a wood stove, grill, hot tub and access to the garden and orchard, not to mention Flood Plain’s blackberry popsicles and the sweet, golden corn available at the Corn Crib next door. Arcata Scoop (1068 I St., Arcata) boasts a changing menu of artisanal organic ice cream flavors like vanilla lavender, lemon poppyseed and coconut orange chip. Art Lovers Trinidad Arts Night is the first Friday of the month in that famed fishing village. Grab the schedule of Trindad’s art openings and exhibits in the North Coast Journal (online at www.northcoastjournal. com) and hit the road. First stop, Moonstone Crossing for art plus a tasting flight that highlights the wine-making artistry of owners Don Bremm and Sharon Hanks. Across the street, check out the Trinidad Art Gallery, a cooperative showplace for about two dozen painters, potters, woodworkers and photographers. Pop into the Beachcomber Café for an organic snack and, if you’re lucky, music. Up past the Murphy’s Market, you’ll find Strawberry Rock Gallery. Revel in the works of a couple dozen more painters and sculptures. Perhaps you’ll spot gallery employee Antoinette “Toni” Magyar painting in
the parking lot. One door down, have a glass of inky syrah at Bergeron Winery tasting room. Cross the parking lot to the Lighthouse Grill for dinner and visit the bathroom. Yes, the bathroom. There you’ll find Magyar’s epic panorama of Trinidad’s picturesque west end. The motto of Evolution Academy of the Arts (526 Fifth St., Eureka), formerly Eureka Studio Arts, is simple and inspiring: “Evolve your art.” This applies whether you are a novice who dreams of drawing or an artist who’s looking to hone your craft. The academy is a can’t-miss stop during Arts Alive! — demos, visiting artists, exhibits and hands-on artsy fun — and it offers many types of visual arts classes, from figure drawing to animation. For a low-commitment intro, drop in Thursday mornings for the ongoing mentored figure

On March 11, 2011, Japan was hit with a catastrophic 9.0 magnitude earthquake. Over 300,000 lives were changed forever as the earthquake triggered fires, landslides, tsunamis, and the meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. After observing the devastation of the country where he was born, artist Jave Yoshimoto collected images to pay honor and homage to those who lost their homes, livelihoods, and lives that day. The end result of his exploration was a 30-foot scroll painting on paper completed in gouache, with large, flat color sections inspired by the aesthetics of traditional Japanese woodblock prints. Yoshimoto’s work reflects on the human narratives that develop in the wake of catastrophe. He hopes his work will bring awareness to the 2011 disaster and the effects of tragedy around the world, and that it will inspire viewers to help those in need. Jave Yoshimoto is a visual artist and educator based in Omaha, Nebraska. He received his BA from the University of California Santa Barbara, his MA in Art Therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his MFA from Syracuse University. He believes in creating works that are sincere and true to his authentic self, and teaches his students to do the same at University of Nebraska at Omaha. (Exhibition sponsored by Betty Osborne)

Born in Japan to Chinese parents, Yoshimoto immigrated to California at a young age and has traveled extensively. He will share how his many travels and experiences have influenced his work, in particular his experience of watching from afar as a devastating earthquake and tsunami changed his home country forever.

Two years after the Tohoku-oki earthquake triggered a massive tsunami of the coast of Japan, a lone boat washed up on the shores of Crescent City, California. Students from Del Norte County High School discovered that the boat, called Kamome, belonged to a high school in Rikuzentakata, Japan. Through the efforts of students and businesses on both sides of the Pacific, the boat was returned to its home in Japan and an exchange program allowed students from both schools to visit and connect with another tsunami-vulnerable community thousands of miles away. The friendship that developed between these students inspired a children’s book called “The Extraordinary Voyage of Kamome: A Tsunami Boat Comes Home.” In this exhibition, visitors will view Amy Uyeki’s beautiful illustrations and learn how the journey of this small boat made a big difference in the lives of students living a world away from each other.
FAMILY ARTS DAY | AUG. 13, 2PM Join Lori Dengler and Amy Uyeki for a reading of the book “The Extraordinary Voyage of Kamome: A Tsunami Boat Comes Home.” Dengler will read the book and play a few excerpts of co-author Amya Miller reading in Japanese. After the reading, artist/illustrator Amy Uyeki will lead a group project on how to make an origami boat and seagull.
TSUNAMI CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE PACIFIC | SEPT. 4, 2PM Lori Dengler and Amy Uyeki will recount the backstory of Kamome and its journey across the Pacific Ocean and back home again. The talk will also discuss the similarities between Japan and Northern California, and the series of events that brought the authors and illustrator together to produce the first publication of Humboldt State University Press.

With the Kids The new kid-friendly Freshwater Reserve Farm Trail (5851 Myrtle Ave., Eureka) goes out about a mile, along a flat, narrowing path and through diverse landscapes. See grazing mammals here, a restored salmon habitat there. Interpretive signs explain these views — and their importance to our ecological community. You can park south of the Kneeland Glen Farm produce stand, where you might also pick up some greens or jams to take home. Whether your little adventurers are wilderness explorers, vampires, pirates or ninjas or LARPers, the Arcata Community Forest offers a fine stage for playful theatrics. Park your vehicle in the Redwood Park lot off Bayview Street in Arcata and head to the back of the park to trek through the forest. Take your pirates or sneaky ninjas up and down Trail 1, snacks in their backpacks and mud-muckable shoes on their feet. What creatures might be lurking in that castle-like hollow stump? Break out the snacks in adjoining Redwood Park. Ensuing slide/swing/climbing action on the playground should tucker out the most tireless wilderness explorer. The nifty part about rafting the Class II rapids in the stretch of the Trinity River between Big Rock and Tish Tang is that they come at the end. You have several hours of family-friendly, kick-back floating down the Trinity first. That gives you time to get used to the tiny tumults coming your way. Bigfoot Rafting (40630 CA-299, Willow Creek) takes kids as young as 4 years old (accompanied by adults) on its 9-mile lower Trinity trip. Not Strictly for Tourists Lost Coast Brewery’s Cemetery Tap Room (1600 Sunset Drive, Eureka) is buried between graveyards. Get it, buried? And it’s where you’ll wind up at the end of your tour of the brewery’s new facility. The tour takes you through the commercial brewing process from vast grain storage tanks to the brewmaster mother ship computer station that remotely concocts all that Alleycat Amber and Downtown Brown. See that 2,000-pound bag of C-15 malt from Eugene, Oregon? That’s a key ingredient for the popular Great White. The recipe also calls for coriander — ground in founder Barbara Groom’s old bread mill along with the kaffir leaves kept in the hops fridge. Every room on the tour smells different, says our guide, and the hops refrigerator
“smells like heaven.” As of this writing, the tour is free. And popular. Make reservations. Kids can come and enjoy root beer. Also free are two post-tour liquid treatsies in the Cemetery Tap Room. The brewery’s first spookythemed beer is a zingy double IPA called the Fogcutter. Yes, you can take home a case. The 120th Humboldt County Fair at Ferndale’s fairgrounds from Aug. 18-28 will be “one for the books,” say the promos. There’ll be battles of bands, a barbecue cook-off with celebrity chef Guy Fieri, carnival rides, bull and bronc riding, funnel cakes and prize-winning farm animals. And don’t forget the horse races. Only a handful of counties in California still offer horse racing at their fairs.
Humboldt goes all out with fancy hats and betting action. Even if you’re not ready to put down cash on a fast horse, the races offer a terrific place to people-watch. The unconventional marriage of two sports comes to the Benbow Valley Golf Course (7000 Benbow Dr., Garberville) in the form of foot golf. The game involves kicking soccer balls at goals or, in some cases, extremely large holes. It’s new this year at Benbow, where a nine-hole round of foot golf goes for $ 12 for adults and $ 7 for kids under 12. Balls included. Worthy of note, the course also attracts a fair number of folks for games of Glow Golf, played after 8 pm with luminescent golf balls and rave bracelets. Says an employee: “Pretty pretty.”

DRESSING
8 C. cooked and cooled black rice 1 large green bell pepper, chopped 1 large red bell pepper, chopped 1 large yellow bell pepper, chopped 3 large sweet potatoes, roasted and peeled 2 bunches green onions, thinly sliced
½ C. sesame oil ¼ C. tamari (or more to taste) ½ C. sesame seeds Combine rice and vegetables in large bowl. Whisk together sesame oil, sesame seeds and tamari and pour evenly over salad. Fold ingredients together and serve with additional tamari if desired.

Nothin’ fancy, just favorites from the grill and the fryer that will take you back. Don’t forget napkins. Lots of napkins. Chili dog aficionados around here are devoted to Bob’s Footlongs (505 12th St., Fortuna). Feed your nostalgia with an order of piping hot hush puppies and a thick shake. Haven’t had a corn dog since the state fair? These are freshly dipped to order. And those are hand-cut garlic fries under all that cheese. Bring cash. What time is it? Follow the truckers to Toni’s 24Hour Restaurant (1901 Heindon Road, Arcata) and order up some blueberry pancakes, an old-fashioned flat-top grilled bacon cheeseburger, an enormous shake to dip your crispy fries in, or a slice of homemade pie. You know what, get the pie no matter what time it is. Drive slowly or you’ll miss the shack that is No Brand Burger Stand (1400 Main St., Ferndale). The beloved dive (in dive connoisseur Guy Fieri’s hometown, no less) grills up old-school beef patties with relish, mustard, tomato and iceberg lettuce. Have a seat at one of the picnic tables and appreciate the simple things.

Photos by Drew Hyland Once upon a time, to refer to a drinking establishment as a “dive” was to insult it, to declare its dark corners unwelcoming places populated by seedy people who’d as soon stab you as clink a pint. And then the ’90s happened. Grunge went beyond a music genre — it was a lifestyle best acted out in places reeking with authenticity (and other smells). The cool kids opted out of the excesses of the ’80s, adopting blue collar symbolism in the form of flannel shirts and PBRs. Crusty old dudes found their longtime joints overrun with hip young things exclaiming, “What a great dive!” A dive bar does not cater to trends or pretend to be more than what it is. A dive bar simply and efficiently serves the only two reasons for such a place to exist: To get people drunk and to withhold judgment.

Few Humboldt dives are as beloved as The Shanty (213 Third St., Eureka). The place does everything right, starting with cheap drinks and competent bartenders, both surprisingly hard to find and even more so to discover together. Around the bar are locals joshing with each other or lost in reverie, far-away stares above generous whiskey pours. In addition to the usual beer signs glowing neon in the dusk, hand-drawn posters line the bar, the wonderfully disjointed work of Dave O’s Sharpie-wielding hand. If the weather’s nice or you need a smoke, the Shanty is one of the only places in Eureka with a patio. And by “patio” we mean several wobbly tables, a collection of random chairs and a battered ping-pong table manned by customers who can hold a drink and a cigarette in one hand and return a serve with the other without spilling a drop. For daytime drinking, the Bloody is a must. For nighttime, whiskey and a requisite hot Shanty dog to go with it. The Alibi (744 Ninth St., Arcata) used to be one bar and then, in 2015, it became two, which explains why you’ll hear locals refer to the “new” Alibi and the “old” Alibi. The old Alibi is the divey side, dark and resplendent with dogs-playing-pool paintings. Sound absorbs into the walls, which promise to do no talking. It’s an ideal place for a hangover breakfast or low-key rendezvous. The new Alibi offers a lighter, brighter, noisier counterpart with modern lines and big windows. Both share friendly servers and a dependable kitchen with a novella-length menu — you’re likely to finish your Bloody Mary in the time it takes to decide between the Foggy Bottom and Mad River burgers. Of course, you may need some time to choose your Bloody Mary, too. At last count, the ’bi offered a dozen takes on the restorative cocktail, including the Marie Laveau’s Voodoo Mary featuring Cachaca Rum, Louisiana hot sauce, Mary mix and pickled okra. Local tip: You can’t go wrong with the Alibi Mary made with Blue Lake vodka.

Honestly, we are struggling to find the bitter here. This tagteam venture with Slice of Humboldt Pie and The Local Cider Bar is a very sweet deal. Stake out a couple of seats on the patio — maybe on the up-cycled highway sign/bench? There are two separate lines, one for cider and one for pie. Get in the cider line and prepare to make some hard choices about hard cider, as there are 24 taps and more than 30 bottles (mostly cider, but some craft beer and a couple of wines). Fear not, the staff know their stuff and will walk you through flavors like the pink cactus cider and imperial blueberry. Sip and savor before you hop over to the pie counter. The selection changes, but you can count on a selection of savory and sweet. Expect pot pies, like old-fashioned chicken ($5.50 small, $25 large), empanadas with fillings like black bean and sweet potato ($3). For dessert, there is a bevy of dreamy options, like the French silk chocolate topped with a cumulous cloud of whipped cream ($4.50). All of them are cradled in a flaky, buttery crust that will test your poker face when you try and tell your grandmother that hers is still the best. (Sorry, Gram.) Of course, Bittersweet sells whole pies, too ($18-$30) so you can always bring her one if you blow it.

Eel River Brewing Co. was organic before it was cool — in fact, it was the first certified organic brewery in the country. And while the taps runneth over all year round with craft brews, summer and fall are a fine time to enjoy the beer garden out back, where a lumber mill once stood. Say hello to the brewery’s cat, listen to the babbling of the little waterfall and toss a few horseshoes in the sun. Start with the calamari steak strips, dipped first in beer, then in f lour spiked with Cajun seasoning, then fried and served with warm marinara sauce ($11.99). There are lovely salads to be had if you can resist the smell of the smoker, in which Madrone wood and the house stout are adding deep flavor to tri-tip beef, pulled pork, chicken and ribs. Many answer its siren call by ordering the tri-tip sandwich piled with thin-sliced meat, fried onions and pepperjack from nearby Loleta Cheese Factory, plus a swipe of either Cajun mayonnaise or barbecue sauce. For your beverage, search your soul and talk to your server. IPA fans should check out the hopped up Emerald Triangle IPA. Health nuts might consider the Açai Berry Wheat, and for the truly adventurous, there’s the Mexican chocolate-infused Kumamoto Oyster Stout. Cheers. It’s always sunny in Blue Lake — at least that’s how it seems to the rest of us. And where better to bask with a beer than Mad River Brewing’s Tap Room and its vitamin D-rich patio? You can even bring your dog. Double down on Humboldt’s grassfed beef with the two-patty River Runner Burger, topped with onions braised in the brewery’s Steelhead Pale Ale and cheddar ($12.99). The brewers and the chefs are collaborating on the fish and chips, too — the Pacific cod is dipped in batter made with Mad River IPA ($11.99). If you crave a little heat, the fried chicken sandwich on a Dutch crunch roll spices things up with sriracha sauce, smoked bacon and pepperjack cheese ($10.99). All of this, needless to say, is even better with something from the baker’s dozen of taps. Can’t decide? No worries. Order up a tray of 12 tasters and sip your way to finding a favorite for the next round. And you will want to stay for that next round, even linger past sunset. On warm nights, the lights go on, the band warms up and folks get down.

Korbly Wood Products Since the early ’70s, Bernie Korbly’s been turning out gorgeous wooden bowls on a vintage lathe. You’ll recognize him — he’s the guy in the San Francisco Giants ball cap sprinkled with sawdust. Korbly loves his work and that fact is reflected in the time and care he gives to each project. In addition to gorgeous bowls and boxes made from his favorite curly woods, Korbly is known internationally for his burl wood slab tables. A perfectionist, he cures each slab in a kiln for up to four years — to get the desired moisture content and prevent cracking — before lovingly finishing each piece.

California Native Woods This shop in the Northern Humboldt town of Orick carries handcrafted, original pieces produced by local artisans from a number of different types of wood. (Look for the carved wood Statue of Liberty out front.) If you’re a do-it-yourself type, this is where you can select an unfinished burl table top and pair it with a gnarly base. We loved the mortar and pestle and the hand carved spoons, among other things. It’s also the place to pick up a live redwood burl you can grow indoors in water, and, if you’re lucky, you may find a woodworker on site turning out a one-of-a kind beauty.

The Legend of Bigfoot Just south of Garberville as the road starts to narrow, you can’t miss the huge Bigfoot carving surrounded by colorful life-size storybook characters. (Vacation photo ops abound!) The Carlson family has owned the surrounding land and the business for generations and most of the redwood yard art and other merchandise is gathered from local woodworkers and craftspeople. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. This place is full of stories. Even those of us who live among redwood giants look up now and then in amazement. Driving along the Avenue of the Giants shows you something new around every corner, something photos and video can’t quite do justice. We lean on words like “majesty” and “breathtaking,” but you kind of have to be there under the ancient, towering canopy to really get it. Take it slow and plan to make a few stops. (Are you not going to stop and see chainsaw sculptures? Please.) From kitsch to fine woodwork, the shops along the Avenue are their own local attraction. South is Garberville, where you can hit the farmers market for an afternoon treat and maybe catch a show. The nearby Mateel Community Center regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals, such as Reggae on the River.
