A True Cowgirl

W

HEN BERWYN GALT-MOORE WAS CHOSEN TO PAINT THIS YEAR’S POSTER FOR THE FORTUNA

Rodeo — which can be seen on the

cover of this program — she wanted to continue a tradition pioneered by Marlyn Branstetter, last year’s artist. That is: She thought that it wouldn’t hurt to put the cowgirls front and center for at least one more year. “I felt that it would be fun to have another woman on the poster, and I’ve always enjoyed the barrel racing,” Galt-Moore said from her home near Modesto. But where Branstetter reached back into the rodeo’s past for inspiration — painting from a photo of Pearl Petersen, a candidate for rodeo queen in 1927 — Galt-Moore chose to work with the present. She chose as her subject Eel River

cowgirl Ronan Rodoni, and painted from a barrel racing photo taken in last year’s Fortuna Rodeo. Galt-Moore said that Rodoni was a natural choice of subject, given her stature in the local community. “I knew that no matter who it was, no matter what discipline, she’s always been well respected,” she said. “So that’s why I chose her.” A local resident for close to four decades, Galt-Moore relocated to the Central Valley only in the last couple of years. She said that she was honored to be chosen to paint for the rodeo this year, and that she still feels a great attachment to Humboldt County. “It was especially precious to me that I was able to do something for Humboldt County,” she said. “I had lived there since 1965, so it was touching that I was able to do something for the county that was my home for so many years.” ✪

HIS IS A SPECIAL TIME FOR SCOTIA BAND, THE ONE AND ONLY COMMUNITY-BASED, MILITARY-STYLE CONCERT BAND IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY. IT’S THE BAND’S 75TH ANNIVERSARY AND MEMBERS ARE SERVING AS THE FORTUNA RODEO GRAND MARSHALS — A FIRST IN THE BAND’S RICH HISTORY. “This is a big deal for us,” said Scotia July 17, when Scotia Band marches at the Band Conductor Mike McClimon, who front of the parade as Grand Marshals. hasn’t seen the parade from start to finMcClimon, who’s been at the head ish since he joined because the band is of Scotia Band for 35 years, said the Fortuna Rodeo honor is only part of the always somewhere in the middle of the procession. All of that changes Saturday, continued on pg. 13

band’s anniversary celebration, which actually started a few months ago when the band had its first “Music Night” in over 50 years at Scotia’s historic Winema Theater. Between the 1930s and the 1950s, Scotia Band held “Music Nights” at the theater. McClimon said those events were a big deal, because getting to Eureka wasn’t easy and people still needed entertainment. The Winema Theater and sometimes Scotia Band provided entertainment for Scotia residents. McClimon said he’s really excited to see the tradition reinstated. On Aug. 15, the band plays its 75th anniversary concert at the Fortuna River Lodge. The anniversary show will be its first indoor sit-down concert. Scotia Band members are used to playing outdoors at events like the Fortuna Rodeo, Wildwood Days and Ferndale’s Fourth of July celebration. “It is a real ambitious program,” said McClimon. Wildwood Days in Rio Dell will also be reunion week for Scotia Band, and lots of alumni are coming back to town, said McClimon. Over 750 people have played with Scotia

Band since 1935, and McClimon said he knows half of them. When he started in 1976 there were 36 original members still playing in the band. Combine his connection to the original members and his work as a public school music teacher, and you can see that McClimon’s view of Humboldt’s music scene is vast. He would look at students when he was a teacher and wonder: “Who’s going to be playin’ when they’re 80?” During reunion week McClimon will also honor long-time member Cecil Williams for his 50 years with Scotia Band. Williams, an 81-yearold trumpet player, said he feels a connection to the entire band, too. “Those were the guys who got me started in it,” said Williams, reflecting on his early years in the band. When he went to work for the Pacific Lumber Company, it took a few years for him to realize the company had a band. But once he joined, there was no looking back. “Participating is the finest time of my life,” he said. Scotia Band is not only an integral member of Humboldt County’s diverse community, but it is also a tight knit, family-oriented group, said Williams. “I’ve seen second- and third-generation members playing.” ✪

ODEO WEEK IN FORTUNA IS JAM-PACKED WITH EVENTS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY, AND THAT MOST DEFINITELY INCLUDES THE KIDS. COME ON DOWN, AND YOU’LL SEE WHY WE SAY THAT RODEO WEEK IS MORE FUN THAN DISNEYLAND — AND RIGHT IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD! TUESDAY the 13th kicks all the fun off with a whole load of children’s games at 6:30 p.m. in the Redwood Village Center. Activities include the Kids Fireman’s Muster, Jump Slide, Fire Truck, Face Painting, Fortuna Police Dunk Tank and more. On WEDNESDAY, the good times continue to roll as Main Street shuts down from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m, making way for a slew of street games, including the Stick Horse Race, Egg Toss, Kid’s Fun Jump and Kid’s Dummy Roping. This event also hosts the traditional Penny Scramble, which is broken up by age: 3 and under (with parents), 4-5 years and 6-7 years. Refreshments of hot dogs and hamburgers will abound thanks to the Fortuna

Volunteer Fire Department. A special thanks goes to Trinity Diesel for sponsoring Wednesday night’s games. THURSDAY will have all the excitement of the largest Junior Rodeo on the North Coast from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Rodeo Grounds in Rohner Park. In 2008, the Junior Rodeo drew 150 contestants and this year is looking to be just as big, with entrants coming from as far as Nevada and Oregon, and one as young as 2 years old. Broken up by age group — Peewees (age 6 and under), Junior Boys and Girls (613 years) and Senior Boys and Girls (14-18) — the youngsters will compete in several trials as they do their best to be the All-Around Champion of their

The first player to get popped is the loser, and the champs move on to another heat, and so it goes until a grand champ is proclaimed. “Guys really go wild on those things — last year a guy flipped it and people just love that stuff,” Wheeler says. “It’s a lot like NASCAR, you know, in that they’re going all out and just waiting for something to happen.”

ILD HORSE RACES ARE MAINSTAYS OF THE AMERICAN RODEO, AND for good reason. They are spectator-friendly (contestants are knocked on their butts repeatedly). They’re relatively easy to put on (three fearless cowboys to a team — a halter, a lead shank, a saddle and a bunch of wild broncos is all it takes). And every single race is different (all these horses and cowboys means one thing — chaos). Horses are the foundation of the rodeo. As the rodeo progressed through the late 1800s and into the 20th century, more events were added, but wild horse races maintained their popularity. Any cowboy worth his salt rode in the wild horse races until the 1960s, when interest in the event dwindled to an all-time low. One group of people refused to say goodbye to the sport. They formed the Wild Horse Racers of America in 1976 to govern the event, increase awareness and get people involved. Within five years of its official

creation, the group published a rulebook, established national finals, crowned national champions and created a board of directors. The group changed its name to the Professional Team Bronc Riding Association (PTBRA), and for the first time in its history brings wild horse races to Humboldt County and the Fortuna Rodeo. Since it is Humboldt’s first time, a little explanation of the sport is in order. Each team consists of three cowboys, each with their own specific job. You have the mugger, who is in charge of getting hold of the halter long enough for the rider to get the saddle on the horse. Then there is the shankman, the cowboy who holds the lead shank (a line attached to the horse’s halter) in order for the mugger to get a grip on the horse’s neck. Once the saddle is on, the rider attempts to hop on and ride the horse to the finish, an imaginary line 30-35 feet away. The PTBRA is a professional organization from start to finish. The group’s main concerns are safety of the animals and

safety of the contestants, and of course, fair competition. “Animal welfare is important,” said PTBRA’s National Secretary Misty Buckley. “We want to keep accidents to a minimum.” Buckley, who got into the sport because her husband had a team, said her family will always maintain a “western way of life.” That western way of life includes rodeo. PTBRA’s California director, Tom “Slim” Peck, started wild horse racing when he was 16 years old because his uncle needed a rider. Over the years, Peck went from rider to mugger, and when he was 30 he started his own team. This is Peck’s first year as regional director, and he said: “I always want to be out there with my buddies. Even though we’re often competing, we’re still one big family. We may be fighting one moment but eating supper together the next.” Five teams will compete in Fortuna Rodeo’s wild horse races, including 10-time National Champion Jason Smith’s team. Don’t miss this rare chance to see one of America’s longest running rodeo events. ✪

“R

ODEO PEOPLE WANT TO HAVE A GOOD TIME, WHICH IS WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT,” said country singer Dave Russell between sessions at the Cupit Music studio back in Nashville, Tenn. Having released two Top 40 hits last year for the Country Christian and Powersource Independent charts, Russell and his band are working on a new release they hope will endear them to a national audience. Even so, Russell’s no stranger to national fame. A lifelong lover of music, Russell’s friend secretly sent his audition tape to Star Search back in 1995. When they called requesting his presence on the show he was baffled, but went down to Florida regardless to win not one but two Star Search championships. From then on he knew he’d found his calling. “Since I stepped on stage I’ve never had a bad day of work. I was meant to do this,” he said. Growing up with a family of

seven back in rural North Carolina, Russell had a large variety of musical influences, listening to everything from Bread, The Who and Queen to Jim Croce and David Cassidy. Today, his main love is country music, which “speaks to the individual as well as to a larger, familyfriendly audience,” as he put it. A harmonica player, he also holds a special reverence for the Chicago blues and songs that speak about real subjects. “I just love good music,” Russell said, “from Elvis to the Jonas Brothers, you can find something great in every style.” Now living in Rockland, Calif., just outside of Sacramento, Russell is enjoying a laidback, easy atmosphere that reminds him of home — when he’s not playing packed shows, that is. One of the “Most Booked Country Bands in California,” according to the KCRA “A-List,” the Dave Russell Band has become a staple of the Sacramento valley scene, making frequent appearances on local radio stations, doing yearly performances at the Folsom

Pro Rodeo and playing a strong roster of local county fairs. The band has been playing rodeos for several years, from the Grand Nationals at the Cow Palace to smaller events up and down the West Coast. This year will mark their second appearance at the Fortuna Rodeo. “We’re very excited. Fortuna brings in great riders and great events, which makes it a great place to play,” he said. Performing to sold-out crowds everywhere from Nashville, Biloxi, Branson, San Antonio, Reno, Tahoe and much of Northern California, Russell describes their show as nonstop from downbeat to the end. “A typical set is upbeat and danceable with a good deal of variety,” Russell notes. Playing anything from country western and Elvis to standard classics like “Sweet Home Alabama” and even Eminem (“we do a couple rap segments in our show”), the guys’ whole goal is to mix it up and keep it fun. ELCOME TO THE 89TH ANNUAL FORTUNA RODEO, THE CENTERPIECE OF THE FRIENDLY CITY’S WEEKLONG SUMMER CELEBRATION! Fortuna is proud to offer the largest rodeo in the region, giving cowboys up and down the state a chance to show off the skills that built the American West. In addition to competing in the individual events, which are described in the following pages, each cowboy’s individual scores are totaled together to make them eligible for three all-around cowboy prizes — the rodeo’s top honors. They are:

Bronc riding comes from the essential cowboy skill of taming (or “breaking”) a horse for use. As in bull riding, a contestant must stay atop the wild animal for eight seconds using only one hand. But the bronc rider has additional considerations — he is also judged on how well he spurs the horse to action with his boots, and he must keep his feet in the stirrups at all times. Bronc riders come out of the chute with their legs over the horse’s shoulders in order to give the animal the initial advantage. Buckle Sponsor: Humboldt Fence.

Bull Riding

Maybe the most popular event and probably the most dangerous, bull riding is a battle of wits and brute strength between a cowboy and the most dangerous of ranch animals. The cowboy attempts to ride for eight seconds, strapped to a bucking, whirling one-ton bull with only one hand. This is a judged competition: Points are awarded for the cowboy’s form and for the difficulty of the ride. But if the rider is bucked off, or if he touches the bull with his free hand, he is disqualified. Buckle Sponsor: Bear River Casino.

Like the saddle bronc event in many ways — but more slippery. In the bareback event, the bronc rider goes into action with one hand in a simple rigging and nothing at all between him and the horse except a pair of blue jeans. Once again, the contest is judged on the skill and form of the rider as well as the liveliness of the animal. Contestants must stay on for eight seconds to qualify for a score. Steer Wrestling Steer wrestling (or “bulldogging”) tests the cowboy’s strength as well as his skill at handling both horse and cattle. In this timed event, the steer leaves the chute at a run, tailed by one horseman (“the hazer”) who keeps the animal running in a straight line. After a head start, the barrier holding back the mounted contestant is tripped, and the steer wrestler races after his

quarry. When he catches up, he dismounts his horse at a run and transfers his weight to the steer, which he then wrestles to the ground. Quickest time wins, but as with all timed events the contestant gets a ten-second penalty if he leaves the chute too early. Buckle Sponsor: Wyckoff’s Plumbing.

Calf roping — also called “tiedown roping” — introduces another element into the mix. Not only must the cowboy rope the animal, as in breakaway roping, he must also bring it to a full stop and immobilize it. After the animal is lassoed, the cowboy dismounts and runs to the calf carrying a small rope in his teeth. He then throws the calf to the ground and binds three of its legs, after which he signals to the judges and time is called. The event isn’t over, though — if the calf kicks off the rope on its legs within six seconds, the contestant is disqualified.

Team Roping The only team event in the rodeo, team roping features two different styles of lasso work. A steer leaves the chute running. After a short head start, two cowboys follow on horseback. The first must rope the animal’s head or horns to stop its forward progress, moving it into a turn. Then the second — the “heeler”

— attempts to lasso the animal’s rear legs. A five-second penalty is assessed if he manages to rope only one leg. The clock is stopped when the steer is fully roped and the contestants’ two horses face one another. Buckle Sponsor: The Playroom.

from one event to another, enjoying everything the Fortuna Rodeo offers. The Fortuna Rodeo Association donated $20,000 to fix up the barbecue, said Director of Fortuna Parks John Crotty — each fire-resistant brick carries a $5 price tag — but that’s only a portion of the contributions Rohner Park receives from the Association regularly. So whether you spend your hard-earned money on some delicious barbecue or another rodeo delicacy, rest assured that all rodeo profits, no matter where they come from, go to maintaining and improving Rohner Park and its rodeo grounds. Little league baseball fields, horse shoe pits, basketball courts, play grounds, rodeo grounds, museums, the aforementioned deep pit barbecue, a cook shack and a skating rink all make up Rohner Park’s 55-acres of fun for all. Crotty, who is also a member of the Rodeo Association, said the rodeo’s been using the park for 80 years, so it makes sense that rodeo proceeds funnel back to the park. Volunteer

efforts from the community and the Rodeo Association to the park are immeasurable, said Crotty. People use the park, but they give back to it, too. “Rohner Park is the crown jewel of Fortuna,” said Crotty. “Community involvement is huge.” Twenty kids with huge smiles laugh, play and converse with each other as they wait for lunch at benches in front of the park’s cook shack. Five or six teenage girls in yellow shirts scamper around, serving lunch to the rambunctious kids. It’s bright, warm and crystal clear. Known as “Summer Fun,” the kids enjoy activities in the park instead of idly watching summer pass by. Fortuna Rotary clubs, the Rodeo Association and several other contributors donated the money needed for the eatery known as the cook shack, making it one more thing rodeo proceeds helped finance. Crotty doesn’t have to deal with any of the maintenance to the rodeo grounds because — you guessed it — the Rodeo Association pays for it. The Association is top dog when it comes to most of the special events held in Rohner Park, said Crotty, but the Rotary clubs are important, too. The park just hosted “Art and Wine in the Park,” which was put on by several Rotary clubs, and “Hops in Humboldt”

donated $6,500 to the park as well. The list goes on: A new train caboose at the Depot Museum was donated by Fortuna’s Noble family and the Rodeo Association. Fortuna has always been fiscally responsible, said Crotty. Community involvement from not only the associations but the citizens of Fortuna is incredibly important for maintaining fiscal responsibility throughout the city, especially in Rohner Park. “Volunteer groups make the city go round,” said Crotty. So when you grab a portion of the 4,000 pounds of meat rodeo staff plans on barbecuing during the week, remember that your money helps put on the show. Go ahead and treat yourselves to seconds — you know you want to. ✪

The History of the Fortuna Rodeo

T

HE FORTUNA RODEO HAD ITS BEGINNINGS WAY BACK IN 1921 WHEN THE CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY PLANNED A PICNIC. IT WAS TO BE AN AFTERNOON and evening affair, with “Rodeo Stunts” after the barbecue and a dance in the evening with the intention of making it the biggest and jolliest picnic of the year! Charles W. Moore of Ferndale was general chairman, with Frank Rolley as superintendent of the barbecue. On the general committee were H. W. McWhorter, W. N. Russ, E. N. Tooby and Fred D. Smith, with volunteer help from others. Ben Snodgrass was director of judges with William Graham of Bridgeville, Joe Russ of Ferndale and Buff Robinson assisting. The first event had a

25-piece band, a grand ball and a chicken supper. There was a gratifying response with 3,000 people attending. That was the beginning…. A great tradition began in Fortuna; the Redwood Fortuna Rodeo. Humboldt County has been an agricultural center for California, as its first settlers were ranchers. It’s a little wonder that Fortuna lays claim to the oldest and longest running annual rodeo on the North Coast. Because of that, the rodeo has a long-standing history of attracting some of the top livestock and rodeo cowboys on the West Coast. By 1926, the event had turned into a riproaring three-day whirlwind of thrills and excitement. Doug Prior of Blocksburg was the chairman, and W. F. Robinson was continued on pg. 39

continued from pg. 37 committeeman in charge of the stock and the grounds. Ready were three carloads of bucking horses and 60 head of wild range cattle, secured by E. B. Lytle and Charles Moore. Crowds came, enjoyed the Maverick ball and the Sombrero ball on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. In 1930 there were more changes — now came riders from Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity and Mendocino, instead of professional riders. Putting on the show were G. E. Peterson, Charles Wescott, Art Chandler, George Graves, Cecil Evers, Paul Friedenbach, Jack Benson, Louis Gist, H. W. McWhorter, Fred Krieg, Frank Brelle, Paul Mudgett, L. L. Bryan, L. S. East, P. A. Hugo and others.

One year the rodeo went “long hair,” when Frederick Jagel of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Company sang every afternoon. By 1939, the rodeo had simmered down to a twoday event, but packed with just as much dynamite as the longer celebrations had been because the citizens continued to make everyday preceding it a build up for the real thing. About 10,000 people attended the show in 1939 and though the new grandstand was not yet completed the show was bigger and better than ever. In 1941 the rodeo joined the National Rodeo Association of America and at the time became known as one of the best and biggest rodeos in Northern California. The blight of the war

fell that year, and with it fell the Fortuna Rodeo, for the next five years. But in 1946 it rose again to newer and greater proportions. Bill Clark rode in the 1946 rodeo at the age of 80. In 1948 Stella James of Willits was chosen as the Rodeo Queen, with Pat Barnwell of Bridgeville and Naomi Pries of Ferndale as her attendants. The 1948 rodeo events grew to include a parade downtown, penny scramble, street dancing and vigilantes jailing local men who chose not to grow a beard for the event. Since its beginning, new faces and new hands guide the destiny of the Fortuna Rodeo while keeping alive the old traditions. That tradition continues today in Fortuna, every third weekend in July. ✪

S

The annual trip to the Red Bluff Round Up was the highlight enjoyed by “the boys.” Health problems in the last few years kept him from attending activities, but he was always there in spirit. ✪ In 1960, AL DIAS was asked to join the Rio Dell Volunteer Fire Department by a long-time family

friend — the assistant fire chief, Ray Ghilarducci. After moving to Fortuna, Fire Chief Bud Wescott and Mel Berti, captain of Company #1, asked him to join the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department. He promptly agreed. During his years in the department he served as secretary, treasurer and captain. He was then elected by his peers to be the assistant fire chief. Starting in 1985, Al served on the Fortuna Rodeo Board of Directors representing the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department. His duties consisted of street entertainment, parking and rodeo arena. He helped out anyone who asked for his help, right up until he retired in 2003. He made many lifelong friends during his 45 years as a volunteer firefighter and his 18 years on the rodeo board. For him, it was about more than belonging to an organization — it was family. ✪

ETH BUCK CAME TO FORTUNA IN 1970 AS THE WHOLESALE DISTRIBUTOR for Standard Oil of California. He soon joined the Chamber of Commerce and became active in the community. He served 25 years on the Fortuna Rodeo Board of Directors, and served as secretary for 16 of them. It was a big job, but he thoroughly enjoyed it — not without some grumbling!

The Tom McWhorter Scholarship

R

ODEO HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MCWHORTER FAMILY TRADITION. FOR 53 YEARS, TOM MCWHORTER SERVED on the Fortuna Rodeo Board, enjoying

the sport and camaraderie that are part of the cowboy way of life. In 2005, Tom’s family established the Tom McWhorter Rodeo Scholarship for high school rodeo participants from District Two of the California High School Rodeo Association. Not a scholarship in the traditional sense, this fund is set up to help students (freshmen to seniors) pay for the expenses of participating in the sport of high school rodeo. There are eight rodeos during the school year open for these young athletes. The costs of entry fees, equipment, travel and training can be prohibitive to some. This scholarship fund is open to all students who are in good academic standing in their school and have a drive and passion to compete. The applicants are asked to write an essay that describes their aspirations and dreams in rodeo. This year’s winner — Hunter Wheeler from Laytonville, Calif. — wrote: “High school rodeo is important to me because it has helped me stay out of trouble in school and after school ... The people I have met have given me encouragement to never quit, and to always try my hardest.” Tom, who grew up on a ranch in Yager Creek, always enjoyed going to the high school rodeos, watching the young people develop their skills and grow into worldclass athletes. “District Two has had a number of state and college champions that started in the local high school rodeo circuit,” stated McWhorter’s son Ted, who continues the family’s rodeo tradition working for West Coast Rodeo Company.

Good Luck to all Rodeo Contestants!
