WELCOME In September, 1968, my best friend and I jumped into my mom’s ’59 Chevy Impala and headed to Silverado Golf & Country Club in Napa Valley for a car show with a fancy French name. From that point forward, I was hooked on Concours d’Elegance. Having attended well over two-hundred Concours since then (and I have the programs to prove that!), I thought it was time to bring Concours d’Elegance to my new hometown of Ferndale. Actually, Karen Pingitore, long-time Ferndale Chamber of Commerce President, and I started planning for a Concours in Ferndale about ten-years ago, when I was still living in the Bay Area. Logistically, that proved too difficult to bring to fruition. But, now, it’s here! Please accept my enormous appreciation and thanks to all who have helped to make this possible, from the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce, particularly its Board of Directors, the Humboldt Lodging Alliance, our many sponsors, Sports Car Club of America, our countless volunteers and spectators, to the entrants, many of whom have driven or towed their magnificent automobiles from afar. Finally, we at the Ferndale Concours on Main are extraordinarily proud that every cent of net proceeds of our Concours weekend will be evenly distributed between the Ferndale Senior Resource Agency and the Redwood Memorial Hospital Foundation, two most worthy Eel River Valley 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. Enjoy the show!

It is with great pleasure and pride that the City of Ferndale welcomes the first Concours on Main. We are confident that this will be one of the most attended events for our area, bringing in visitors from throughout northern California. We hope that your experience is memorable and that you have an opportunity to visit the rest of our scenic county, as we have many items and areas of interest from the giant redwood groves to fertile pastureland to ocean shores. The good news is that no matter which direction you go from Ferndale, you will have a wonderful world of adventure touring Humboldt County, which is one of the most scenic spots in the world. The City would also like to thank our Chamber of Commerce and Humboldt Lodging Alliance for their sponsorship of this event as well as all the individuals and organizations that helped put this event together. Good luck and thank you from the whole community! Sincerely,

Don Hindley Mayor

WELCOME continued

As President of the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce, I have the pleasure of welcoming you to the inaugural Ferndale Concours on Main. We feel so fortunate to host this event, and I think you will agree that Ferndale’s historic Main Street is the perfect setting for this very special collection of motorcars. We wouldn't be hosting our inaugural Ferndale Concours on Main without having received a special designation from the Sports Car Club of America, so we owe them a very special thank you for making today's event possible on our historic Main Street. Events like this don't happen without an army of volunteers who have risen to the occasion to help make this a memorable day for all participants and attendees. You are all appreciated, and I thank you all for your time and efforts. A special thanks to Ellen Briggs who created our logos, brochures, marketing materials and website. She is a talented partner and worked tirelessly on helping to make our Concours a success. We truly couldn't have done it without her! Our community is blessed with supportive businesses who have sponsored our Concours, and you will find a special listing thanking all of them on a separate page. Please take a moment to make note of these businesses, and support them as they all support many events in our community throughout the year. Lastly, and most importantly, I'd like to thank the S.C.C.A. judges, officials and motorcar entrants for supporting our inaugural Concours. Without all of you there simply wouldn't have been a Ferndale Concours on Main.

On behalf of the Humboldt Lodging Alliance, welcome to the first Concours on Main in the Victorian Village of Ferndale. We are so pleased you have joined us for this inaugural event which we feel certain will become a favorite on the Sports Car Club of America calendar. Please use your time in Ferndale to leave the rat race behind for a while. Like the exquisite automobiles that are competing in the Concours on Main, time has stood still in the Victorian Village of Ferndale. When it comes to “authenticity, condition, preparation and quality of restoration,” we’re sure you’ll agree that Ferndale is a true classic. And Ferndale is a gem set in the incredible surroundings of Humboldt County, California’s Redwood Coast. We hope you’ll find time to explore the towns, the coasts, the farmlands and the forests of what the U.S. Department of Agriculture determined was the most scenic county in the United States—if not on this trip, then on your next visit. Above all, the roads and scenery of Humboldt County are perfect for automobile touring, which is why we are particularly excited to support the first Ferndale Concours on Main. Please enjoy your stay, and come back soon! Sincerely, Chris Ambrosini Chairman of the Board Humboldt Lodging Alliance

On behalf of the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce,

Karen Pingitore, President

HONORARY JUDGES Supervisor Rex Bohn was raised in Eureka from the age of 5. There is no doubt that Humboldt County is home. Supervisor Bohn won the election in the primary of June 2012 against his opponents by an overwhelming majority. He was then appointed by the Governor Jerry Brown in July 2012 to fill the seat of former Supervisor Jimmy Smith who retired early because of ongoing health issues. Supervisor Bohn recently won his second term for the First District. He was also recently elected 2nd Vice Chair to the Rural Counties Representatives of California which is an organization that champions policies on behalf of California’s rural counties Supervisor Bohn’s qualifications for being an honorary judge for the inaugural Ferndale Concourse on Main include projects such as restoring a 1959 MGA, a 1956 Chevy Bel Air and a 1949 Willy’s jeep. His current project is restoring a 1972 Ford Bronco. Dave Buchanan, a retired business CEO, former President of The Candy Store car club in

Burlingame, and a serious ‘car guy,’ spends as much time racing, collecting, and restoring vintage cars as time in the day permits. Dave recently helped form and run the successful debut of the first annual Alameda Concours. Dave’s collectible cars have appeared at Villa D’Este Concorso in Lake Como, Italy, the Hillsborough Concours, and won Best in Show at the original Palo Alto Concours, among other awards. Dave usually races at Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, and Thunderhill, and has raced at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Road America, Wisconsin, Mexico’s La Carrera Panamericana, in the Virginia City Hill Climb, and Circuit Mont Treblanc in Quebec. Whether racing his ’56 Alfa Romeo Spider, his ’96 Ferrari Challenge car, or his ’58 Chrysler New Yorker, Dave loves the challenge of mastering the turns and corners of each track or road. Lowell Daniels and his wife, Jenny Oaks, purchased the Victorian Inn in 1999, and created

the boutique bed and breakfast hotel it is now, in Ferndale, California. He is a Certified Gemologist Appraiser and owner of Silva’s Fine Jewelry in Ferndale, located in the lobby area of the Victorian Inn. The VI Restaurant, offering fine dining and a full bar within the Victorian Inn, and Redwood Suites, also in Ferndale, are two more of Lowell and Jenny’s current enterprises. Lowell is currently a member and past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns; a former member of the Board of Directors of the California Hotel & Lodging Association; a member and former President of the Board of Directors of the Humboldt County Convention & Visitors Bureau; a member of the Board of Directors of the Humboldt Lodging Alliance; past President of the Ingomar Club (Carson Mansion), Eureka. While living in Sutter Creek, Lowell was a Shriner and volunteered at the Shriners Concours d’Elegance in the Sacramento area. He is also the past proud owner of a 1927 Marmon.

A native Ferndalean, Don Hindley is a retired financial advisor and he puts this experience to work for Ferndale through his involvement in many community projects. Currently serving as Mayor, Don has previously served on the Ferndale City Council and is honored to welcome you to his home town for the inaugural Ferndale Concours on Main.

Although still relatively young for the collector car restoration business, Martin Hveem has been performing ground-up restorations for several decades. He began his career in Napa County, moved to Red Bluff and has now settled in Redding with wife Lorraine and Martin Hveem Auto Restorations. Initially, he specialized in restorations of Packards and post-war British sports cars. As his work became known, collectors began asking him to restore all sorts of autos, from early Thunderbirds (“Baby Birds”) to Corvettes to “woodies.” Recently, Martin has become prolific in restoring Ford Skyliners, hardtop convertibles made from 1957-59. Although specializing in concours restorations, he even created a magnificent period-correct hot rod for one client. Martin’s products have won countless awards and have won Bests-of-Show at nearly every concours in Northern California! Karen Pingitore and her husband, Carl, discovered Ferndale in 1989 and Karen has been a

Ferndale business owner and chamber of commerce member since 1993. The Ferndale Chamber is the promotional machine for the City of Ferndale and as the Chamber president, Karen, along with the chamber board of directors, has the pleasure of sharing the unique charm and character of the residents and community of this historic Victorian Village and honored to host the inaugural Ferndale Concours on Main.

Caroline Titus has been the owner/publisher/editor of the nationally-recognized award winning 138-year-old Ferndale Enterprise for the past 18 years. SCCA INTRODUCTION Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) was founded in 1944 and now has membership in excess of 50,000. SCCA’s San Francisco Region (SFR) followed in 1947, boasts about 4,000 members, and encompasses the geographic area from just north of Fresno to the Oregon border. Although SCCA’s focus has always been on racing, sanctioning road races throughout the country, SFR has also sanctioned Concours d’Elegance - gatherings of elegance – since 1952. Concours are exhibits of collector automobiles judged on their quality of restoration to original and authentic, as well as their condition, preparation and operation. All judges are volunteers and deemed expert on specific marques (manufacturers). All judged automobiles should be, essentially, as they appeared on the showroom floor. Each auto is judged beginning with 100 points. Points are then deducted for deviations from original, imperfections, poor preparation, etc. The highest three point-finishers in each class are awarded trophies. But, in order for an automobile to win its class, it must score at least 80 points; second place requires at least 70 points; third place at least 60 points. Originating in 2008, SFR-SCCA has been granting the Championship Award. Points are awarded for attending each SFR-SCCA sanctioned Concours, for receiving a class trophy and for being judged Bestof-Show. The automobile that accumulates the greatest number of points at the end of the Concours season wins the award. As well, the winning owner is presented with a custom-designed gold ring, identifying him/her as the championship-winning automobile’s owner. The Championship Award is given at the season’s final show, the Niello Concours at Serrano, held on the first weekend in October. SFR-SCCA is actively seeking new judges, field crew workers and scoring assistants. If you are interested, please contact Chief-of-Concours Ed Therrien at interairsvs@yahoo.com or at (510) 670-4700.

LOCAL AUTOS

My TR-3 BY Dr. Randy Lacy I’ve often heard in conversation with car guys, a common theme; that they wish they hadn’t sold their first cars. At retirement, I had the same feeling and started looking for a 1957 Triumph TR-3, my first car. I found one about five years ago in Omaha, Nebraska (though it was listed on a UK website!). It was quite original, numbers matching, in Winchester blue, an uncommon color which I liked. It was also relatively rust free for a Triumph, and still had its original spare tire. I purchased it from the very nice owners and trailered it home. The car was originally imported to Bob Snead Motors in Olympia, Washington, and has had about five owners since. At some point

22

it had had a cosmetic restoration of questionable quality. After some tinkering of my own, I decided to have a complete concours restoration. Local TR-3A owner, Jim Moranda, in Rio Dell, suggested I try Martin Hveem Automobile Restorations in Red Bluff (now in Redding), California. I met with Martin and was very impressed with his demeanor and the quality of his restorations. After fifteen months, I took possession of a beautiful frame-off, nut-and-bolt restoration that has won several awards in Northern California car shows and concours. I consider myself a steward of the car, and my wife, Paula, and I have put many pleasurable miles on it.

A near lifetime with an E-Type by Jim Brown My love of Jags started with a Dinky Toy, a pale blue D-Type I got as a young boy. The LeMans winning D-Types, I thought, were the most beautiful cars ever made; I still believe that. (Side note: As a sports car fan, I read everything I could in Road and Track and Sports Car Graphic.) A ride in a ‘62 E-Type at age 14 sealed the deal - 100 in a 30mph zone! I bought my ’64 Jag E-Type in 1973, just out of high school, for the princely sum of $2,300! Parts weren’t available in those days, so I spent a lot of time in a junk yard in Mission San Jose. This place was complete with adobe

walls and Spanish tile. A woman owned it and knew more about sports cars than anyone I’ve ever met. She’d let me climb the mountains of imports and rummage through everything; times have definitely changed. It took seven-years to go through the car, as it was very rough. My list of things to do is much shorter, these days. The car is reliable and a pleasure to work on. I put about 2,500 miles a year on it. After 43 years of ownership, it is an old friend. P.S. I still have the Dinky Toy.

FEATURED MARQUES Our Featured Packard by Larry Nannini My story begins in 1999, when I attended my first concours. I was 49 years old and didn’t really know what a concours was. I learned quickly, after reviewing all the different classes and cars that day at the concours. There was one car that stood out amongst the rest and that was a 1940 Packard. That day, I decided I just had to find one. Growing up in the Muscle Car era, it wasn’t easy to slide to Pre-War Classics. That 1940 Packard worked its charm on me, though. It took me a few months, but I located one in Oregon. I ended up with a 1940 1804 touring Sedan, straight out of the Godfather movies. It was the kind of vehicle the mob boss would have been driven in. Unfortunately, it was a “driver,” not the concours quality car I wanted. After keeping it for only a few months, I sent it down the road; I sold it! One week later, I came upon a two-line ad in Hemmings Motor News, listing the car that I would eventually buy and still have to this day. It was a 1940 1803 touring sedan without the traditional side-mounted tires; its name was “Blue Max,” named by the previous owner’s young daughter. This car would become a true concours champion for me in the years to come. Max was a five-year, ground-up restoration with thorough, traditional concours in mind. This car would win the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) 100-point Senior Award in 2000. It has gone on to win many “First in Class” awards, but never anything more. That’s because, being a “Closed Car,” it would never win any special awards which, after all, is what these shows are about, chasing the “brass ring” - winning a “Best of Show,” or other special award. In 2006, I started looking for an “open car,” a convertible. I found one at an auction in Monterey. It was a 1935 Packard “Victoria,” a 2-door convertible with a back seat for two! The owner named this car “Lipstick,” the color of the Packard. Lipstick would win seconds and thirds, but only once won a special award, the “Stanford Cup” at the Palo Alto Concours in 2006. My dreams expanded to include having a car on The Pebble Beach Concours greens. I decided to sell “Lipstick” and move onto something else. What would it take to get a car to Pebble Beach? First, you would need to find the right car. “Pebble’s” idea of a qualifying car at their show is something “rare” and

24

that has special qualities, and I knew that would cost greenbacks. So, for the next few years, I worked hard to achieve my goal. Finally, in 2013, I hooked-up with one of my club members in my local Nor-Cal Packard Club. He had been a big-time Pebble Beach participant and, at one time, a judge at Pebble Beach and he definitely knew pre-war Packards. Don Sears is the kind of gentleman who demands 100% perfection, otherwise the work is considered unacceptable. I knew he was the gentleman that would steer me toward Pebble Beach. He was working on what was probably his last total restoration of a car that could be accepted to Pebble Beach, in 2014. I watched the progress on the car at the start of 2013, knowing he was hoping for 2014 and Pebble Beach. This car was the 1934 Packard (1104) Super8 Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton, pictured in this article. There are only 5 known to exist today. It sits on a 142” wheel-base. It has a 384 cubic inch motor with 145 brake horsepower. The car weighs 4,740 pounds and cost $3,350 in 1934. It sits on 17” wire wheels with 7.50 bias-ply tires. The car features “Ride Control” where you can adjust the hydraulic shock-absorbers for a smoother ride. It boasted the first “Full-Flow” oil filter and oil pressure regulator. “Regulator monitors” under the hood controlled oil temperature, allowing use of the same viscosity lubricant year around. Its increased wood substructure (240 lbs.) on metal chassis made for a softer, quieter ride. In my heart, I knew that this car was destined for Pebble Beach. I still didn’t own the Packard and I had to know if Don was willing to sell the car to me to complete my dream. He knew I had been interested in his car and, one day, while at his home, I asked the question, “Don, would you be willing to sell me your car?” He looked at me and said, “Larry, sit down in that chair. If and when I throw a price at you for this car, if you are still sitting in the chair, I will sell you the car?” Well, I didn’t fall out of the chair, I bought the car on the spot, and the rest is history. I had the car now, but the next question was... would we get accepted to Pebble? March, 2014 rolled around and we received the acceptance invitation to Pebble Beach; we were in. The car was a winner in class at Pebble in August, 2014. Since then, I have gone on to win three “Best of Shows,” a “Chairman’s Award,” several “First in Class” awards, the “SCCA Championship Award in 2015” and all three CCCA 100-points Awards, showing the car in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

My 200,000+ Mile Ferrari By Kevin Enderby I bought my 1984 308 GTS QV in 1990 at the top of the market with 42,000 miles. I used it as a daily driver and soon started going to the track with it, averaging about one-track day a month for some 7 years, before my new yellow 1997 F355 GTS took over track duty. The 308’s original motor lasted 135,000 miles and the car has 219,000 miles on the odometer today. It got painted a prettier red in 1994. That was the first year it ever went to a Concours, at the Ferrari Club of America national meet in Monterey, managing 3rd in class. It did not see the Concours field for another ten years. In 2004, when the FCA meet came back to Monterey and I wanted to show that a driven car could do well, it won a Platinum award, a Coppa Bella Macchina (Beautiful Machine Cup) award and the Best Contemporary Ferrari award. In 2005, I took both the 308 and the F355 to Indy for the FCA Meet and the 308 was awarded the first Ed Gilbertson “Ferraris are meant to be driven” award, as well as another Platinum award. In 2006, my blue F430 completed my primary color collection of Ferraris and took over the

26

track duties. The years went on and the 308 continued as a daily driver, winning its share of awards. One notable year was 2009 when it got into the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue. It was up against what would become two of the best Ferraris in its class in our region. That day it got first in class and the major award the Mayor’s Cup for the individual that best represents the spirit of motoring. Occasionally, all the cars would make it to the track for cameo appearances and photographs. In August of 2013, the 308 was approaching its 200,000th mile so, with the help of great friends, we managed to get it to turn 200,000 miles at Sonoma Raceway in turn 11. And got a cool video clip of it: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=OnmGhUKyGdQ and some great photos. In 2016, when the FCA meet came back to Monterey, the goal was lofty, triple Platinum with three cars over 100,000 miles, with the 308 over 200,000, a Coppa Bella Macchina award and finally the Coppa GT award with the F430, all of which were achieved. The 308 managed an impressive 99.5 score that day.

VICTORIAN VILL AGE OF FERNDALE

30

Although it's been suggested that the Victorian village is a fairytale setting, Ferndale is a working, all-American town that takes pride in its beautiful community and cultural heritage. You will find a town where the old way of life has not been compromised. The splendid buildings have been carefully restored, embellished with lovingly tended gardens, and people take the time to smile a friendly greeting. In the late 1800s Ferndale was an agricultural and transportation center, a melting pot for Scandinavian, SwissItalian, and Portuguese immigrants. The Main Street Historic District is on the National Register and the entire village is California Historical Landmark No. 883. There's nothing stodgy in this small town, though; Ferndale loves to have fun! The cradle of the wild and wacky Kinetic Sculpture Race, Ferndale continues to host the finish of this offbeat art event, now a three-day contest. The village is home to many colorful events and festivals, including the Foggy Bottom Milk Run, Tour of the Unknown Coast bicycle run, Portuguese Holy Ghost Celebration, the Humboldt County Fair, Bargain Lovers' Weekend, Christmas Lighted Tractor Parade, and now Ferndale Concours on Main! Explore the old-fashioned mercantiles, antique stores, art galleries, and specialty shops, hear the ringing of the blacksmith's hammer, and talk with the friendly people. Watch fresh candy being dipped by hand to whet your appetite for a fine dinner and an evening of theatre. Resting by the fire in your elegant bed and breakfast inn, think about tomorrow: a walk along nearby coastline, a nature hike in Russ Park (the 110-acre forest bird sanctuary), a boat tour of the Eel River Delta, a visit to the museum, a tour of Fern Cottage, a drive to the Lost Coast, a visit to the redwoods, a leisurely day filled with old-fashioned service and friendly faces. Nestled between the two redwood forests in a thriving dairy community, you may discover Northern California's best-kept secret, The Victorian Village of Ferndale. Sunsetmagazine confirms, “you can immerse yourself in Ferndale's Victorian spirit.
