Experience Bio-Touch for Pain Relief, Lower Stress

B

io-Touch is a profound option in health care with touch-healing therapy that has been helping people feel better for 25 years. It can be used alone or in conjunction with mainstream medicine to relieve pain, lower stress levels and ease the discomforts of illness and disease. Everyone is effective using the technique the very first time they try it, and no special talents, knowledge or beliefs are required. The Bio-Touch Center, in Tucson, offers individual sessions on a donation basis to anyone that needs relief from pain, stress or whatever ails them. For those that would like to know how to perform Bio-Touch to help their family and friends, it’s easy to learn. The Bio-Touch foundation offers low-cost classes at the center and online. Volunteers can become a certified Bio-Touch practitioner and give sessions at the Center to those seeking a reprieve from the miseries of headaches, bunions and everything in-between. Executive Director Paul Bucky says, “The Bio-Touch Center is a welcoming place, staffed by caring volunteers who love to share the wonders of Bio-Touch. Come in soon, and discover the delights of this truly ‘touching’ experience.” Location: 5634 E. Pima St., Tucson. For more information or to make an appointment, call 520-323-7951 or visit JustTouch.com.

The Best Season for Anti-Aging Procedures

D

ebbie Shaw, licensed esthetician and owner of Alternatives in Health Care Detox Therapy Spa, says that autumn and winter are the best season to have antiaging treatments done. Her reasoning is that many procedures that promote collagen growth are very sensitive to the sun and heat. Her holiday season special is 20 percent off of a first treatment when mentioning this ad (valid until January 1, 2019). Debbie Shaw Holiday gift certificates are available. “Many skin care professionals warn their clients to use sunscreen and a floppy hat to keep the sun off of newly treated skin. For some reason, they don’t tell people to stay out of the heat also. Heat will cause skin to produce more melanocytes, causing hyper-pigmentation,” explains Shaw. Shaw prefers to perform anti-aging treatments during this time of the year because it’s very difficult to remain out of the sun and heat when living in Southern Arizona. This is the time of year when we wear more clothes and the sun and heat isn’t so intense. Shaw’s business is one of the few places in the U.S. that is certified and insured to provide Electrical Plasma Arc treatments, also known as fibroblast therapy. This technology has been successful in Europe and Asia for quite some time. It is a non-laser way to tighten skin and remove tattoos. This service, like most other collagen production treatments, warns people to be careful with sun and heat exposure, making this season the best time to check out this amazing new technology. For more information, call 520-275-4510 or visit DetoxTherapySpa.com. See ad, page 16.

Get an Inspection before that Holiday Road Trip

T

ucson’s One Stop Automotive would like to remind readers to be safe on family road trips this holiday season by getting a pre-trip inspection. Whether loading up the family truckster and driving to a favorite vacation spot or taking a long road trip to visit family for the holidays, it’s important to take the car in for an inspection before a long trip. These days our lives are filled with so many tasks that sometimes we forget about the smaller things, like a pre-trip inspection. This can put us, our family and even the planet at risk. Not having our tires properly rotated, inflated and aligned is the number one cause for decreased fuel economy, and increased emissions. It can also lead to vibrations and increased stopping distances, which can be very dangerous. Also commonly overlooked are lights and wiper blades. It might be sunny and warm where we’re going, but consider the conditions on the drive there. Inoperative lights can be disastrous when traveling through dust storms or fog. Inadequate wiper blades can cause a loss of vision in heavy rain or snow. For more information and to set up a pre-trip inspection, call 520-571-1811 or email OneStopAutomotive@hotmail.com.

Dance Your Way to a Healthier Lifestyle

D

Politeness is the flower of humanity. ~Joseph Joubert

ance is one of those things that some people don’t want to do, whether it be out of fear of looking goofy or standing out. In reality, we are all a little goofy or stand out in our own way and through dance it can be harnessed and expressed. There are some people who just have the natural ability to be as smooth as silk and the rest of us have to work at it. There are many benefits related to dancing, according to studies. Let’s start with the basic: it’s exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, adults are supposed to get roughly 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic Couple's first private lesson activity per week; dance definitely falls into that category. Newcomers to dance will quickly find that there are previously undiscovered muscles in their bodies, even if they do other sorts of exercise regularly. Dancing aids in building our core muscles in the abs and back, which has the added benefit of a better posture and balance. Some dances are more aerobic than others, but they all have one thing in common—exercise. Dancing is good for the brain. A study in The New England Journal of Medicine found that ballroom dancers that were at or above 75 years young had sharper minds than those that didn’t dance, and had a reduced risk of dementia. They go on to say this could be from increased blood flow to the brain from the physical exercise; eliminating stress, depression and loneliness from the social aspects of dancing; as well as the mental challenges of memorizing the dance steps. Self-confidence and self-discipline are also beneficial side effects of being a dancer. From dancers who just do it for the social aspect, to the serious competitors who are striving to be the best, the commonality with them all is that everyone has a smile on their face when they are dancing. The hardest step for any new dancer is the one that gets them in the door—after that it’s all about the positive experience. Music In Motion Dance Studio LLC, an independent dance studio serving Tucson and surrounding communities, will be hosting a holiday party on December 22. Youth dancing series begins in January. Register now. Country socials are also starting in the new year on the first Saturday of the month. Location: 1980 W. River Rd., Ste. 140, Tucson. Not Yet Extinct

New Species Discovered

We know a lot about the Earth and its creatures, but never everything. The State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry, in Syracuse, has compiled a list of the top 10 new species discovered in 2018, which includes a rare great ape, hitchhiking beetle, omnivorous marsupial lion thought-to-be-extinct and other species that are critically endangered. Quentin Wheeler, college president and founding director of the International Institute for Species Exploration, says, “As humans alter habitats and contribute to global climate change, species are going extinct at a faster rate than we can name them. They can teach us so much about the intricacies of ecosystems and the details of evolutionary history.”

Beer and Wine Contaminated with Monsanto Poison In 2016, beer testing in Germany revealed residues of glyphosate, a suspected carcinogen, in every sample of beer. The environmental organization EcoWatch has found glyphosate in all of the most popular brands of wines in America and the world. One common factor in the tests is the presence of Monsanto Roundup, which is commonly sprayed in vineyards. Glyphosate herbicides do not dry, wash or cook off. They have also been proven to be neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors and a cause of liver disease even at very low levels.

Celebrating the Light of Consciousness Holiday Celebrations Across Cultures by Janis Farmer

M

any cultures celebrate the return of the light during the darkest months each year. In prehistoric cultures, return of the light represented safety, warmth and the possibility of continued survival. Individuals and cultures of Northern European descent have celebrated winter solstice through the centuries. Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights celebrated every autumn, symbolizes the eventual spiritual victory of light, goodness and wisdom. ing year. Iranians celebrate the triumph of Mithra the Sun God over darkness in an ancient all-night ceremony called Shab-e Yalda, which involves bonfires and sharing across the community, generosity and reading the writings of the 14th century mystic Persian poet Hafiz. The Zuni and Hopi peoples also celebrate the returning of the light with ritual, dancing, bonfires and ceremony. Other cultures use this period of change from darkness to light to highlight a remembrance of desired values or practices. In Japan, Toji welcomes the return of the sun with huge bonfires in farming communities, and reminds individuals of their own practices that increase health and good fortune. A more modern celebration, Kwanzaa, is a week-long celebration of African thought and principles. These principles are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Center for Spiritual Living Tucson views each person as the light of consciousness that they already are, even if the individuals have hidden their light from

themselves or others. They celebrate the light of consciousness that lives continuously and perpetually within all people through ritual and ceremony during two special events in December. In the winter solstice candle-lighting ceremony, held at 7 p.m., December 21, the shared light of humanity is recognized and honored through song, story and the lighting of individual candles. On December 31 at 7 p.m., the New Year’s Eve ritual will have two components: releasing the old, worn-out, used-up or no-longer-useful ideas, activities or practices through the use of a burning bowl, and claiming the heartfelt desires for the new year with a powerful, intentional action—stepping across a threshold into a new beginning as a newlyreaffirmed creative being. Both ceremonies are held in the Nickerson Auditorium, 3231 North Craycroft Road, in Tucson. Rev Janis Farmer is Senior Minister at Center for Spiritual Living Tucson. Humanity’s collective consciousness took an unexpected turn in 1968 after The Beatles captured the world stage. The iconic British group became agents of change in more ways than music when their search for answers to life’s big questions led them to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s spiritual center in Rishikesh, India. Their interest in Transcendental Meditation (TM) sparked a surge of interest in enlightenment and meditation, providing the West with a popular means of cultivating higher states of awareness. A movement to bring about global awakening has been growing ever since. Fresh impetus, in the form of quantum physics, the science of yoga and spiritual practices rooted in ancient cultures, disseminated by books, teachings by spiritual luminaries and websites such as Conscious.TV, has exposed millions to the concept of consciously participating in the evolution of humanity to bring about a world that works for all.

Attaining Critical Mass

In 2000, Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, provided a ray of hope for the estimated 50 million individuals involved in the world enlightenment movement by introducing the concept of critical mass. This occurs when an unshakable belief is held by 10 percent of

among them, are known to have lived in this exalted state. Yet, an unprecedented awakening has been underway since the 19th century.

the population. Scientists that tested the phenomenon at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in upstate New York, discovered, “Once that number grows above 10 percent, the idea spreads like flame.” Mahesh predicted that only 1 percent of humanity is needed to create enough good vibrations to usher in world peace. While the figures required to reach this critical mass can be debated, it’s certain that the old ways no longer work, and we are quickly running out of time to adopt viable solutions to mounting global crises. Despite this sense of urgency, we have no clear idea of where we are on the scale of transformation. Yet leading voices point to promising signs of progress in a developing collective awareness that acknowledges life’s interconnectedness and embodies life-affirming beliefs and values.

Deepak Chopra, a physician, pioneering author and co-founder of Jiyo.com living in California and New York, believes that we may be in a phase of the necessary transformational shift, experiencing disruption along with the emergence of a new paradigm. “The ultimate goal with our Jiyo.com community, a collective well-being project, is to build a critical mass of people that will create a more peaceful, just and harmonious inner and outer world,” says Chopra. It begins with personal transformation through yoga, meditation, pranayama breathing exercises, nutrition, sleep, personal growth and relationships that enhance awareness. “Evolution should be gradual and comfortable,” he says. Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith, founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center, in Beverly Hills, believes humanity is in the midst of an emerging renaissance of kindness, love and compassion, with millions embracing the planet as a living being. “This isn’t making news because mainstream journalists are still reporting from an old worldview,” he says. Beckwith, a renowned minister and teacher for 40 years, leads a 9,000-strong trans-denominational spiritual community. He remarks, “Those of us focused on

adding our energy to the global enlightenment movement see aspects of it emerging in changes such as health care rather than sick care, businesses adopting multiple bottom lines of people, planet and purpose—rather than only profit—and the shift from a me to we consciousness.” Dianne Collins, author of Do You QuantumThink?: New Thinking that Will Rock Your World, in Miami, suggests it’s time to wake up to the fact that we are living in a quantum age and still using thought and language shaped by the Industrial Age. She discovered a burgeoning underground culture that she calls the “consciousness crowd” while researching her book tour audience. “These individuals are using new thinking and recognizing the worldview of interconnectedness based on modern science. The media doesn’t recognize that thinkers such as these represent the new mainstream, and no one realizes the tipping point is already here,” she says. Cate Montana, author of The E-Word: Ego, Enlightenment and Other Essentials, in Hawaii, likewise is convinced the movement has reached critical mass and is hopeful the perceived tipping point is closer than we think. “Every moment we’re awake, we’re being conditioned to believe in our limited physical nature and separation from everyone and everything around us. This is why we must re-educate ourselves regarding our full nature,” she says. News headlines of global conflicts and ecological decimation make it appear that we are regressing, Montana says, but we are

not going backwards. “The nature of life is growth, expansion and evolution. As one example, some among the medical community now accept the validity of energy practices such as acupuncture, tai chi, qigong and reiki. None of these words were even being bandied about in the U.S. 50 years ago.”

Coming Together

Today, an estimated 5 million people practice TM, which has been incorporated into some schools, universities, corporations and prison programs in the U.S., Latin America, Europe and India. “Those learning this meditation practice number as many as 30,000 to 40,000 a year, which significantly contributes a positive effect to the collective consciousness,” says John Hagelin, a leader of the TM movement in the U.S. Hagelin, president and professor of physics at the Maharishi University of Management, in Fairfield, Iowa, has been leading a scientific investigation into the foundations of human consciousness for 25 years. He’s one of the world’s preeminent researchers on the effects of meditation on brain development. “I think that we are much closer to a global spiritual tipping point than ever before,” he says. Ron Dalrymple, Ph.D., a quantum field psychologist practicing in Fort Myers, Florida, believes the threshold is close and that his quantum unified field theory explained in his film, The Endless Question, can win over skeptics. “I use mathematics, science and storytellers that have studied consciousness to explain in lay language

my theory, which proposes that the mind is an energy field that extends beyond the brain, and its nucleus is the superconscious. Viewers are led to the undeniable reality of what we all are and to the need for creating a culture of enlightenment where we encourage and inspire one another to greatness,” says Dalrymple, author of Quantum Field Psychology: The Thoton Particle Theory. Zaya and Maurizio Benazzo, founders of the Science and Nonduality Conference (SAND), agree that individual awakening and the collective movement toward the understanding of our fundamental oneness is crucial to social transformation. Their nonprofit organization is designed to foster a new relationship with spirituality that is both based on timeless wisdom traditions and informed by cutting-edge science. For 10 years, biannual SAND conferences have energized the global enlightenment movement (ScienceAndNonduality. com). Early audiences of 300 individuals now number from 800 to 1,000, and often include business people and trainers developing programs for workplaces. “Understanding the new science that points to consciousness as all-pervasive and the fundamental building block of reality can change what it means to be human, as well as possibly make violence and economic, social and political crises things of the past,” says Zaya. Thus, the spread of awareness and the harmonic convergence of science, psychology and spiritual thought seem to be bringing humanity closer to the enlightenment that has been elusive for millennia. “Tremendous progress is being made, and I am confident that within a year or two, we’ll see a victory for the enlightened evolutionary forces already present on the planet,” says Hagelin. Your Path to Inner Freedom

H

by Swami Amar Jyoti

umility is the starting point in all faiths, spiritual paths and techniques. Why? If we are humble, we will grow and progress. So whenever something is troubling us, we should just humbly relax. Do not get agitated or react. In any testing situation where we feel confused and do not know what to do, be humble. The solution will come. When we are relaxed and humble, wisdom opens within us automatically. If someone reviles us, opposes us or is bad to us in any way, just love them. Anyone can fight with us, but no one can fight with our love. Those who are genuinely loving and humble are the winners eventually. Forgiveness is not a weakness. Only the bold can forgive. Supposing we are stubbornly holding onto something and not forgiving. As long as we are occupied with revenge, retaliation, reaction, jealousy, competition or simply non-forgiving, that means our mind is occupied with baser thoughts. By forgiving, we renounce those thoughts, which means we are being purified. Therefore, we are not doing any act of obligation—forgiveness is for our own purification. But we cannot forgive another person by pitying them or feeling holier than thou. If we do, we are creating another impurity: arrogance. We must go on loving that person and things will change. Even if they do not change, we will be free. The spiritual message of Swami Amar Jyoti (1928-2001) is based on the unity and truth underlying all traditions and faiths. Transformative Suffering by Steve Wagner

I

n 1940, amid the rolling hills of the Burgundy region of France, in the small village of Taize, a monastic brotherhood was founded by Roger Schutz, commonly known as Brother Roger. This was the birthplace of the Taize community. In the decades following, the community expanded into a worldwide spiritual movement designed to bring people from all religious traditions into one welcoming and affirming body. Brother Roger viewed the entire world as Community and he became a beloved figure to all. Then tragedy struck. In 2005, at the age of 92, he was leading a service in Taize when a woman suddenly launched onto the altar and assaulted him with a knife in front of the stunned congregation. He died shortly thereafter. At the funeral, the monks of Taize sang the song “O God Keep Me Safe”. Its beautiful melody goes along with the text: “O God keep me safe, for I trust in you. The pathway to life you teach me. With you is peace and joy in all fullness.” Was this simply praying to God to keep everyone else safe? What about keeping Brother Roger safe? Perhaps its use was to illustrate a way of viewing reality and suffering in a higher, more enlightened way. There is paradox here. When our lives are invaded by some calamity, however serious or even catastrophic, somehow there is divine presence in the midst of the suffering. So, how do we actually go about facing our suffering when it descends upon us and how do we embrace our own vulnerability? First, a given is to maintain a mindfulness/ meditation practice. But separate from that, here are a few practical tips. • We can develop habits of reframing times of difficulty. The default human response is to avoid our pain. While understandable, that approach is not sustainable. Instead we can intentionally move toward and into our suffering. Talking about it, journaling, internal processing—these activities help with becoming more familiar with our pain and, in a way, befriending it. The bottom line is to not deny. Denial habits lead to more suffering. It backfires. • Take advantage of the practice of Tonglen, a form of Buddhist meditation. In it, one takes on, internally, the suffering of a person we know, and through breath, imagery and intention, feels and then supports the person in pain. It’s also used to focus on our own feelings and experience of suffering. • Enriching benefits flow from placing ourselves in the presence of others in pain. We all have people in our lives who are in the throes of some difficult ordeal—the friend whose marriage is falling apart, who just lost a loved one or who is in a serious depression. Being there for others helps them but also helps us. Something truly mystical happens in moments of supporting another. The other’s suffering can serve as a window into uncovering and embracing our own suffering. In tying things together then, a genuine prayer for God to keep us safe may really have nothing much to do with asking to keep us safe from pain or for God to prevent bad things from happening. The deeper truths are about helping us to be with our pain, to know we are not alone in it, to not despair or lose hope in the face of suffering, and to see divine presence no matter what. A Radical Turn

An Interview with Shawna Ristic on her Near-Death Experience

S

hawna Ristic has wrestled with integrating transformation for over 20 years after facing life’s biggest transformative experience: death. On Christmas Day, 1993, Ristic was in a serious car accident that pushed her near death, leaving her in a coma for weeks. We talked with her about her life before and after her near-death experience (NDE), and how her visit to the other side changed her perspective forever. A body therapist and intuitive healer for nearly two decades, Ristic will be the guest speaker for Arizona IANDS at Unity of Tucson (3617 Camino Blanco) at 6:30 p.m., December 13. She will also be speaking at Unity of Mesa at 7 p.m., December 14, and at Advent Episcopal Church in Sun City West, at 2 p.m., December 17.

Can you tell us about your life before the accident?

Before the accident, I had begun an illicit life of modeling and working in bars. It appeared to me that the value of a woman in our society, my own value, rested entirely on my physical appearance and openness with my body. My soul’s journey required me to make a radical shift toward the light. I set an intention for change, but had no idea it would bring me to the brink of death and back. In retrospect, I see lifetimes spent thrown about by the whims of men under the influence of seduction, booze and drugs. The car accident brought the karmic plan to a halt. I was sent back to the other side to reassess and return to life with an entirely new perspective of truth: each of us is purity at the source.

Do you remember your time on the other side?

I remember seeing my body from above with my mother sitting by my side. I had been gently, lovingly lifted from my body by six beings filled with light. They reached their hands under my body and lifted me up. I felt a joy, acceptance and surrender beyond anything I had ever experienced. I understood that I had a choice to come back or not. This was a joint decision between me and the Council, a group of twelve beings. I saw the ramifications of both choices. I saw the peace of staying with the beings of light that had so lovingly lifted me from my body. I also saw how the choice not to return would affect many people. Most of all, while I was on the other side, I became aware of the incredible fabric of love that was around and within me. Love is the current that flows behind everything. It is the motivating force and the substance. The energy coursing within this matrix orchestrates our lives. I saw my contribution to the matrix and my heart opened to a depth and rawness I had never known.

What was it like to come back to your body?

When I came back, I saw pure light within everyone. My body experienced every emotion that others held within themselves, consciously or not. Everything had changed. There were some physical challenges to overcome as my spirit reclaimed my body, but the internal changes were remarkable. I had been to the other side. I

had seen that beauty and love are the fabric that makes up reality and that the essence of each and every one of us is pure light finding its way to shine through the layers of illusion. I felt an enormous sense of gratitude and responsibility in being alive.

What was your recovery experience like?

I shifted my focus to recovering my physical and mental capacities. I was desperate to be normal. A year after my miraculous recovery, I was proving all the medical prognoses wrong. I was living independently, going to college, working and had no cognitive disabilities. I was achieving all the things I was told would create a happy and fulfilling life, but I was miserable. I was exasperated by humanity’s blindness and my impotence to change it. I felt small and helpless. I had come back to make a difference and I didn’t know how. One night, in the depths of despair, I began to journal. The words and questions flowed from my fingers. As I wrote, I began to realize that something was responding. The words were no longer questions. They were answers that I could not have known or created. I had begun to channel the Council. They became my confidants and my support team. Things began to change in my life. Decisions became guided. I was led to massage school, began my life as a healer and embarked consciously on my journey of integration. It has taken patience to integrate and own my story, as well as an incredible amount of courage to share and trust that it is now possible to create a new consensual reality, one that recognizes pure consciousness in ourselves and each other and one that acknowledges our vibrational experience. This story is part of that journey, and I am open to whatever is meant to happen next. Did you pursue visual arts at school? I kept making art throughout elementary and middle school. In high school at one point, I saw an article about a fine arts high school in Chicago. I begged my parents to enroll me, but instead, they found The Early College Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which offers college level classes on evenings and weekends. I attended classes there during my junior and senior years of high school.

After high school, did you go directly to the Art Institute of Chicago? I did some course work at a community college and then a year of classes at School of the Art Institute of Chicago, but the school was very expensive so I didn’t pursue an undergraduate degree there, and instead began to travel.

Creative Play

The Arts of Liz Weibler by Carolyn King

“Mastery comes from practice; practice comes from playful, compulsive experimentation and from a sense of wonder. Not only is practice necessary to art; it is art. In practice, work is play, intrinsically rewarding.” ~ Stephen Nachmanovitch, Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art

L

iz Weibler’s imagery begins as open, loose, free play on her chosen surface. She might lay her canvas or panel down on the floor in order to joyfully drip, drop, brush or splash paint as the first color-filled layer for her masterful abstractions. This playful, improvisational approach infuses her work with an energy and a dynamic tension between opposing forces. Spontaneity and control partner in her captivating canvases. How did you get started on the visual arts path? I identified myself as an artist from the time I was 5 or 6 years old, according to my family members. I grew up in a creatively supportive environment. My dad was an avid photographer and my older brother, Jim, still draws photo-realistic portraits. Jim used to give me tips as I was drawing at the kitchen table. I would watch The Magic of Oil Painting with Bill Alexander on PBS, mesmerized by how fast an image can change. As kids, my siblings and I used to dig up clay in the backyard and make odd sculptures with it. There was no shortage of creativity in our household.

How did you end up in Tucson from Chicago? I left Chicago in 1996 and spent three years travelling, working and living in a variety of places before landing in Tucson. Initially, I went to Austin, Texas. From there, I aimed at driving to Alaska with a boyfriend, a camper and two dogs. I ended up in Oregon for a year and a half and then Northern California for a while. Were you making art throughout those years? I always drew and painted but making art as not my primary focus in those years. In 1999, I moved to Tucson to support a friend who had recently had a baby boy. Did your art-making re-emerge at that time? Once here, I did reconnect with my painting practice but I wasn’t particularly happy with what I was doing. I had been supporting myself working in the service industry but was ready to do something else for a living. I enrolled at Pima CC to study Fashion Design and to learn “draping”. This decision shifted the course of my life. How so? Essentially, I entered the world of freelance costume making. Once I started working as a draper/tailor, I was hired by a variety of theater companies around the country. I worked at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and then at Julliard in the same capacity. Later, I worked with a Santa Cruz Shakespeare Company in California. In 2008 I met the owner of Miami Art Works and decided to move to the tiny old mining town of Miami, Arizona. I was a resident in an emerging Artist’s Collective located in a former boarding house for miners. I commuted down to Tucson for freelance costume work in those days. Here in Tucson, I have worked for the Arizona Theater Company for years during their theater seasons. In the summertime, for 10 years, I travelled to the Midwest, where I worked with the American Players Theater in Spring Green, Wisconsin, which is full of its own magic, and the home of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin. began to add some recognizable elements occasionally— usually flowers. Years ago I made the conscious decision to focus on creating beauty and for my work to bring good feelings to others. Perhaps my favorite part of painting—other than at the beginning when the canvas is fresh—is when I “fall in love” with the work, and that’s usually when I know the piece is almost done. Ah, the perfect lead-in for my last two questions: First, how does your creative practice serve you as a healing tool? Studio practice is a place where I can feel totally in charge of my decision-making process without concern for judgement. In the studio, I can get lost in my own world. Painting is an immersion in a sense of total freedom. Also, I keep a chart of colors as they relate to the Hindu chakra system up in my studio so I can consciously work with color as a healing tool for myself and the viewers. Has your work with Arizona Theater Company been focused on costumes exclusively? Actually, I have worked as a scenic painter and as a props artisan in addition to costume work. I learned so much about paint techniques while working with the scenic crew. Much of my own studio approach currently has roots in the tools and techniques I explored as a scenic painter.

What’s the balance like in your time between studio practice and work with the theater? It varies year to year really. This fall, for example, I committed to participating in the Open Studio Tour and to showing work at the Tucson Museum of Art’s Holiday Artisans Market. These commitments meant I was available to work part-time for the theater while devoting more time to painting.

Can you talk about gifts and challenges you face doing such highly creative work for a living while still maintaining your personal studio practice? Thankfully, draping for costumes is very different than creating my own paintings. Pattern drafting is much more of a left-lobe activity than painting. Also, at the theater, I am executing someone else’s vision, which is totally different than the myriad of decisions one makes while engaged in creating one’s own work.

Can you talk a bit about your current body of work and approach in the studio? I have been working in abstraction since the time I lived in Miami, Arizona. That experience was such a pivotal time in my creative life. I was able to really spread my wings and work very experimentally. My current work begins with gesture. I choose a palette of colors and work very spontaneously and loosely as a first layer. Next, I begin to build the image through a series of subconscious grids. Around 2013, I

And last, how do you feel your imagery serves community? Most of us are so used to seeing recognizable imagery. When people encounter my work, which is gestural and expressive, they often feel challenged at first. I find it infinitely surprising to listen as viewers respond to work that is outside their usual frame of reference. Everyone sees and feels something unique and different as we all bring our own experiences and inner responses. Most often, people give me feedback that my work inspires them to open up and to connect with feeling. Connect with the artist at SeventhFish.com. MASTERS OF Bodywork & Healing Arts

Crystal Spotlight: Faden Quartz

Q

uartz crystals are metaphysical aids that help amplify the positive while transmuting negativity. They can assist in meditations, healings and connections with both the higher self and the universe. A quartz crystal brings balance, helps to center the self and increases the flow of energy through the physical and subtle bodies. Crystals have been used for healing, divination and by those seeking a spiritual awakening since time immemorial. Crystals and stones are found in legend, myth and religious writings. From the stereotypical image of the fortune teller, with a crystal ball to visualize what is mentioned in ancient writings and religious text, it is clear that many cultures have used quartz crystals as a gift from the earth. The mention of the power of stones is found in the Old Testament of the Bible and the Black Stone of Mecca, which forms part of the Islamic pilgrimage, providing a well rooted basis of the usage of crystals and stones in all cultures. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans wore stones and crystals as amulets. The word crystal comes from the Ancient Greek word “krystallos”, meaning ice. Native American Shamans recognized the healing and scrying power of quartz crystals. Their usage is also found in the culture of the Mayans and Aztecs. Faden Quartz is a crystal known for healing itself. The best healers are those who have healed themselves, therefore Faden Quartz stands at the front of the line for healing crystals. Faden Quartz is great for repairing the aura, mending relationships, improving communications (especially through telepathy) and is a fantastic meditation tool, which will help seek out the truth of any situation. Qigong and Awareness by Mark Frighetti

here the mind goes, qi (chi) flows. This is a basic law of qi. When we are watching a sporting event, we are externally focused and are directing our qi outward. Our awareness is not within our being. To gather qi and center it within, our awareness needs to be focused inwardly. The energy body that surrounds and governs our physical body and internal organs is the reason we have good health. Run out of energy, run out of life. Qigong practice sends qi into the energy body, as do the many thoughts we hold in our mind. Joy, love, and happy thoughts expand our energy body and the original blueprint we were born with. This directs our physical bodies to want to return to that healthy state. Where are our thoughts and awareness focused? Smiling inwardly and enveloping the areas of the body that have become out of balance with good thoughts brings them back into a balanced state. Health improves, stamina, longevity and a happy emotional body all return with happy thoughts focused inward. Feeling our body, the beating of our heart, the inhale and exhale of our lungs, brings our awareness inward. Accepting all the sensations and allowing them to just be with simple acknowledgment does wonders for how we feel about ourselves. Qigong is a lifetime practice that teaches one to connect and feel all the life force energy that surrounds us. The simple and slow movements direct this ocean of qi inward as our mind’s own awareness guides it. Open the energy body to embrace the physical body and return it to a healthy and balanced state. Mark Frighetti teaches ZY qigong at the Harmony Hut, 2467 N. Treat Ave., in Tucson, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., every Thursday. Connect at 520-404-8745, QigongMark@yahoo.com or ZYQigongAZ.com.

movement. The conclusions he’s drawn from his own practice are supported by the largest study to date on disease risk factors, the Global Burden of Disease, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “The number one cause of death and cause of disability in the United States is our diet. Genetics loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger. Genes are not our destiny,” Greger says.

eart disease and chronic illnesses like diabetes, Alzheimer’s and inflammatory bowel disease are reaching alarming rates in this country. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 71 percent of all healthcare spending in the U.S. goes toward treating people with multiple chronic conditions. Plant-dominant diets have a profound and universal effect on disease prevention, and often pose the potential for reversal. Enlightened institutions like the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, in Loma Linda, California, are now offering resident physicians specialized studies in lifestyle medicine based on therapeutic applications of diet. Founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, international speaker and bestselling author Dr. Michael Greger, whose How Not to Die book now has a companion cookbook, is at the forefront of the growing conscious eating for wellness 30

Big Changes Made Easier

Eating superfoods slows inflammation, a major factor in myriad health conditions, and fosters an internal environment that opposes cancer cells. According to Greger, incorporating nutrient-dense foods into our daily diet need not feel like a chore or sacrifice. “If you eat junk, not only are you feeding your precious body crummy fuel, but you’re missing out on choices that are health-promoting,” says Greger, whose free Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen phone app helps make the switch easy and intriguing. “I’m a fan of techniques for getting more plants on our plates,” says Greger. “Try using meat as more of a condiment or flavoring. Find entrées you already like and make them more plant-friendly. For instance, try replacing the taco meat with lentils spiced with traditional taco seasonings.” Other helpful tips include tapping a family member, friend or colleague eager to support healthy choices. It can be difficult to be the only one eating healthfully in any group, but having a support system can help make the transition easier.

Superfoods as Allies

According to Jennifer Di Noia, Ph.D., of William Paterson University of New Jersey, in Wayne, superfoods have 17 nutrients in common that are critical to the prevention of chronic disease, based on findings of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the

United Nations and the Institute of Medicine. Phytochemicals are the body’s best source of antioxidants to help fortify cells against cancer and premature aging, as well as reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of dementia. Leafy greens such as collards, beet tops and certain lettuces, along with cruciferous vegetables, pack the most punch. Surprisingly, popular kale came in at number 15 on the CDC list of 41 superfoods, scoring only 49 out of 100 points for phytonutrient value. Results of an in vitro study published by the journal Nutrition Research spotlight the cholesterol-reducing benefits of steamed collard greens and their ability to boost the body’s natural cholesterol blockers by 13 percent more than the pharmaceutical drug Cholestyramine.

Results as Reward

Greger reminds us that changing our diet can be initially daunting, but better health is worth the effort, as exemplified by one of his leading cases. “I met with an obese, middle-aged man with Type 2 diabetes in the beginning stages of diabetic neuropathy. After a month of being on a plant-based diet, he had reversed his diabetes and his nerve pain disappeared. Within three months, he no longer needed medications for high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Two decades later, he remains vigorous and free of chronic disease.” Greger’s greatest reward is seeing people enjoying better health. His joy is evident when he confides, “Stories of people regaining health charge my batteries and make me jump out of bed in the morning.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer and author of several books, including Multidimensional Aromatherapy. PLANT MEDICINE

SECTION pages 30-37

Introduction: Plant Medicine by Jeffrey Green

S

ince 1965, 40 percent of adults who have ever smoked have quit. In fact, 1.3 million people quit smoking each year in the U.S. Many people who want to transition from prescription medications to natural medicine can’t imagine moving toward medicinal marijuana. For many, the idea of using this alternative medicine conjures visions of smoke-filled rooms with joints, pipes and water bongs. Rest assured that if marijuana is being considered as a replacement for other types of medication, there are numerous choices that do not include the inhalation of smoke. Because marijuana has been under the microscope and broken down to its chemical value and worth, horticulturists are able to identify the most useful compounds of the plant. Combinations of different strain plants are common when developing the medicinal properties into products that deliver the medicine. The medicinal agents can be delivered in many different ways. Smoking the flower of the plant is widely popular, but does carry its own set of risks. The smoke is inhaled into the lungs and begins absorbing into the body almost immediately, making it the quickest way to feel the effects of the THC. The American Lung Association warns of the effects that smoke has on the lungs and is encouraging more research into different ways to consume the drug. Vaporization is an alternative to smoking the flower, yet it’s still inhaled and has the same speedy delivery as smoking. With vaporization, known as vaping, the flowers of the plant are heated to a point that releases the beneficial chemicals, but are not heated to the point of catching fire and producing the harmful smoke that affects the lungs. Vaping is also used to consume pure THC oils and in a 32

NaturalTucson.com

solid concentration called “wax” or “shatter”. This delivery method also limits most of the smell that is associated with marijuana smoke. For those who are still skeptical about inhaling these chemicals, there are still more ways to receive the benefits that cannabis has to offer. There are dozens of edibles to choose from. Many dispensaries have their own brand of good-eats. Many dessert items are available, but there are also vegan options, teas, honey and beverages. Because the medicine is eaten and must be absorbed into the body through the digestive tract, the effects of cannabis are slow acting, and they can take up to an hour and a half for maximum benefit. Also, the medicine is being absorbed slowly and the benefits last longer than inhaling the drug. Like doctors determining the dosage of medications for optimum benefit, marijuana dosages must be experimented with as well. Although a small four-ounce chocolate ice cream may not seem like a lot, some contain up to 40mg per container and is much too high of a dose for beginners who haven’t determined the best working dosage. Many pharmaceutical companies include warnings of possible side effects in their advertising. Even as rare as they may be, death, different types of cancers or paralysis are just a few of the many dangerous and scary interactions and side effects that can occur with prescription drugs. People do not have to risk their lives and fear of having the embarrassing possible side effects, however, when trying marijuana as an alternative to prescriptions, even if they consume too much. CBD oil is also an option for consuming the medicine. Coming in a variety of dosages, the oil is easily managed. It can be taken sublingually and has a rapid absorption rate. CBD oil doesn’t contain any THC, so it poses no risk and has no side effects. When treating a disease, illness or condition, risks are taken. There must be a trial-and-error period when determining what dosage, and what product, has the best and highest good with the least number of side effects. A doctor may prescribe too little of a medication for a specific ailment only to find that the dosage was wrong for the patient. The doctor changes the dose and continues doing this until it’s been determined that the drug is working optimally for each specific individual. People can react differently to chemical compounds, and medicine being prescribed for a treatment could actually do more harm to the body than good. Just like prescription drugs, the dosing of marijuana must be an individual trial-and-error process. The good news is that there are numerous options on how to take, or consume, the medicine in cannabis. The risks taken with marijuana aren’t the same as those read at high speed through the duration of a pharmaceutical commercial, some of which are just plain nasty. Thank goodness that nature is medicine. Jeffrey Green, MA, is an educator, having taught in elementary, middle and high schools and at the college level. Currently, he is a freelance writer, reiki practitioner and a Light and Energy worker. On staff for Natural Awakenings, Green enjoys educating the public on all things positive and metaphysical.

Delta 8 THC, A New Cannabinoid from iLava

T

he same research and development team who designed iLava Touch has spent the last year perfecting the refinement process to make a vape cartridge with a new cannabinoid—Delta 8 THC (Δ8). Consumers of Δ8 THC have reported experiences that include clear-headedness, soothing body sensations and relaxation, with a lower psychotropic effect than Δ9 THC. In Tucson, iLava Delta 8 Clarity will only be available at The Downtown Dispensary and D2 Dispensary. Research shows that Δ8 THC contains properties that may help reduce stress or tension, stimulate appetite or reduce nausea. Those looking for deep physical relief without feeling out of tune with their senses or mentally bogged down, may find that iLava Δ8 Clarity is the product for them. Delta 8 THC is a powerful cannabinoid native to the cannabis flower. In nature, it is found in much smaller amounts compared to Delta 9 THC (Δ9), its common psychoactive cannabinoid relative. While only a few atomic bonds are different from common THC, Δ8 offers a unique, potent high that is not like traditional THCA, CBD or other common cannabinoids. Makers follow a unique process to ensure that they are producing high-quality, water clear Delta 8 distillate, available in six different varieties, with a new PURE | RAW version coming soon.

Aside from the variant color schemes and distinct flavor, TURNIPS are a powerful medicinal root. Chock-full of vitamins such as vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, C, E and K, it also has a host of minerals our bodies need—calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc, to name a few. TURNIP wards off colorectal cancer and other types of cancers. It helps alleviate blockages in the arteries and prevents blood clots, lowering the risk of heart disease. Turnip is a warrior against bacterial, viral and parasitic infections, and is known to shield the body from the damage of nicotine. Don’t overlook the tops of these roots either. Turnip greens have been identified to help with rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and inflammation.

GOOD TO KNOW: CATNIP isn’t only used for tantalizing your cat and throwing them into a frenzy of excitement. With its heart-shaped leaves and white to purple flowers, the plant can be dried and made into a tea that helps promote heavy sweating and in turn alleviate cold, flu and headache symptoms. After the sweating, a peaceful, relaxing state comes on, helping to ensure a restful night’s sleep. Chewing on the leaves also soothes toothaches.

CANNABIS CORNER:

T

Jenny Kush

he popular hybrid strain of cannabis, Jenny Kush, is named in memory of a Colorado cannabis advocate, Jenny Monson, who died in 2013 when she was struck by a drunk driver. She was known in the marijuana activist community as Jenny Kush. The strain was created and grown by Rare Dankness Seeds. It was introduced

GOOD TO KNOW

and sold with all proceeds donated to the Jenny Kush Foundation, which was established to help support Monson’s children. As popular as Monson was, the namesake strain of cannabis follows in popularity with many medicinal marijuana users. The hybrid strain has a nice balance between sativa and indica, and offers the benefits of both strains. The sweet earthy scent of the plant provides a dominant flavor of citrus with an underlying nutty taste. Bringing on relaxation with its indica parent, it is used for pain relief, anxiety reduction, stress management, controlling nausea and depression.

Along with the relaxing effects, Jenny Kush is also derived from the popular sativa strain, Amnesia Haze. This sativa side of Jenny Kush brings on a pleasant boost in mood and a feeling of happiness and mild euphoria. With its relaxing and uplifting effects, Jenny Kush is known as a wholebody medicine, which is being used for multiple illnesses and conditions. Because of its numerous benefits to the body, it’s a good strain for use throughout the day without feeling sluggish. The side effects are mild while using Jenny Kush. Dry mouth is the most predominant negative aspect, with dry eyes also being noted by some users. One of the more popular strains, Jenny Kush can sometimes be difficult to find in dispensaries. A new supply has come into Tucson and can be found at Earth’s Healing Dispensary, conveniently located at 2075 E. Benson Hwy. and 78 W. River Rd. Connect at EarthsHealing.org. See ad, page 31 Please keep in mind that the names of some of these strains, while appearing severe and possibly scary or offensive, are safe in every way.

Patios, porches, pots and gardens can be seen hosting the ALOE plant throughout the world. The succulent is popular for treating a number of skin issues including burns, scrapes, cuts and psoriasis. More unfamiliar benefits of aloe go deeper than the skin and are used by consuming the internal gel and juice from the leaves. ALOE has been shown to help fight stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, osteoarthritis, asthma and can help stabilize blood sugar in diabetics. Aloe juice is sold in most grocery and specialty stores. Enjoy a glass today, because nature is medicine! December 2018
