Cover artist Carolyn King, our regular Artist Spotlight writer, is not only a fan of Tucson artists (as made apparent in her interviews with many of our area’s creative forces)—she is an established artist herself. Turning the tables this month, our Artist Spotlight features King as the interviewee. She currently has an art exhibit downtown at The Joel Valdez Public Library, from October 2 through 30. See more of her work in this issue, on page 32, and check out even more in person at the exhibit. Holly Baker, publisher I am also excited to share that Natural Awakenings Tucson will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary with a community party next month, from 1 to 4 p.m., November 12, at the Reid Park Rose Garden. The event will be open to all, and will be a beautiful way to spend the afternoon meeting other conscious-minded people, and the movers and shakers of the healthy living community here. Check back in our November issue for more information. As always, I wish you health and happiness, and extend my gratitude for sharing the past 10 years with Natural Awakenings of Tucson.

ack Baker, owner of Marine Clean Windows, has always been driven to be the best at what he does. A former Marine, resort spa director, certified fitness specialist and private self-defense instructor, he now offers detailed cleaning of glass, window tracks and screens. Additional services include, Jack Baker but are not limited to: hard water treatments, screen repairs and ceiling fan cleaning. Baker enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after high school and served for five-and-a-half years on active duty. During this period, he attended college to become a fitness specialist. After leaving the Marine Corps, he moved to Hawaii and began his spa career at Grand Wailea Resort. He went on to become the Spa Director at the Buena Vista Palace in Orlando, Florida, Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa in Nassau, Bahamas, and ended his spa career with the Tucson Omni National Resort & Spa. While in Tucson, Baker met his wife, and his love for Tucson ended his desire to pursue a career in the spa industry, which constantly required relocating. It was this decision that led to his current profession as a window cleaner. He entered the cleaning industry to assist his wife with her business (ResCom Cleaning Specialists). Many of her customers were in need of window cleaning, so in 2008, Baker formed a window cleaning business after researching the subject in-depth. Sara Yo Spirit Jewels: HEALING AT HAND

A

fter 25 years experience in medical practice and research, Dr. Hannah Hershoff decided to leave her lucrative medical doctor career to create healing jewelry. A phone chat with a cousin who took a trip from China totally changed Dr. Hannah’s life. Dr. Sara Yo Hannah learned that the mystical stones from a remote area of Southeast China near her hometown have incredible spiritual healing properties. After extensive research, Dr. Hannah learned that the five natural elements in the stones had served several dynasties of Emperors over thousands of years. This information excited Dr. Hannah enormously and motivated her to test the spiritual healing effects of the stones. A few weeks after wearing Dr. Hannah’s bracelets, three out of four individuals reported they gained confidence, improved their self-image, sensed more connections to loved ones, and experienced a reduction in anxiety. This dramatic positive feedback encouraged Dr. Hannah to leave her medical career and work full time on Sara Yo healing jewelry. Dr. Hannah says, “I am so glad I have made this career change decision, as I truly believe in the power of spiritual healing. I am so happy to do something I am extremely passionate about and I can help more people than I even did before!” For more information, visit www.MySpiritJewel.com. NaturalTucson.com

lying Change Equine Therapy, in Atlanta, is an internationally recognized program that partners rescued horses in therapy with children, teens, adults and families healing from traumas like childhood neglect and abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, natural disasters and the trauma of war and combat. In a study of their services, 82 percent of teens improved more in just five, one-hour sessions of equine assisted psychotherapy than they had in two years of Tootsie and Emily traditional talk psychotherapy. Hurricane Irma’s winds hit the farm full force, leaving behind a minimum of $20,000 in damages to the covered therapy barn and arena. The organization needs immediate help in any form—volunteers to help repair and rebuild, donations of building materials and cash donations. It is important to mention that many of those in need of Flying Change’s services are least able to afford treatment. The program has never turned away a client they believed they could help based on the inability to pay. Flying Change relies on the support and generosity of the community and needs assistance now more than ever. Location: 4680 Polo Lane SE, Atlanta GA. To donate, visit FlyingChange.org.

Energy Healing Sessions at EnergeticHeartHealing

J

eanie Underwood, a Heart-Centered Intuitive Healer at EnergeticHeartHealing, offers individual energy healing sessions, with no physical contact. She can “see/ feel” people’s energy and help them shift it. Underwood, a Reiki Master, offers tools and skills from her extensive training and healing, including shamanic practices and techniques from Braddock Body Voices, Jeanie Undewood EFT and Heart Rhythm Meditation. “The Solar Equinox brought a change in the energy on the planet, creating an environment for Light Workers and Old Souls to express the fullness of their being and more easily offer their gifts to the world,” explains Underwood. “So many Light Workers and Old Souls have felt stuck over the past year or more, and berate themselves for not moving forward with what they feel is the purpose of their life. The eclipse marked an energetic shift that opens the door to bringing their gifts to the healing of the planet. The energy coming to us now is clear and strong, and our fellow human beings need our gifts now more than ever.” Celebrate this transition brought on by the new energy by welcoming the change and opening of an energetic door with energetic clearing and meditation tools in order to remove the blocks and move forward emotionally, physically and/or spiritually. newsbriefs Conference Featured Near-Death March Experiences 8-9While Swimming

T

he International Swimming Hall of Fame hosted a fascinating and visionary “Conference on NearDeath Experiences While Drowning”, on August 18. Since its inception in 1965, ISHOF has been the “Mecca of Aquatics”, bringing together many fascinating people and acting as the facilitator for knowledge exchange. This conference brought attention to neardeath experiences during a drowning episode, a very important issue largely neglected by most aquatic safety professionals. “I could see, floating in the air, the lifeguards attempting to resuscitate a lifeless body; it was mine.”; “I saw a bright light that asked me, in a life review, what I have done in my life for love and learning.”; “I felt peace and no fear of death.” These are the words of people reporting what they experienced during the time they “died” temporarily during a drowning episode, as reported by Jan Holden, Ed.D. and S. Avramidis, Ph.D. in their book Near-Death Experiences While Drowning. Such reports are termed near-death experiences (NDEs). Contemporary advances in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation have enabled lifeguards and first responders to bring large numbers of victims back to life, heretofore unprecedented in human history. Of the millions of those who survive drowning each year, approximately 20 percent of survivors report NDEs.

Dolores Huerta Comes to The Loft Cinema

T

he Loft Cinema will be screening Dolores, a documentary about Dolores Huerta—one of the most important, yet least known, activists in the fight for racial, class and gender equality in American history—beginning October 6. The public can also meet Huerta in person at a post-film Q&A, at 7:30 p.m., October 9. Huerta was an equal partner cofounding the first farm workers union with Cesar Chavez, but her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Even as she empowered a generation of immigrants to stand up for their rights, her own fiery dedication and relentless work ethic were constantly under attack. False accusations from foes and friends alike, of child neglect and immoral behavior from a woman who married three times and raised 11 children, pushed Dolores out of the very union she helped create. Still, she remains as steadfast in her fight as ever at the age of 87. Director Peter Bratt’s provocative and energizing documentary reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to the fight for justice and sets the record straight on one of the most effective and undervalued civil and labor rights leaders in modern U.S. history. Winner of Audience Awards for Best Documentary at the San Francisco, Seattle and Minneapolis Film Festivals.

Coffee Enemas for Super Liver Support W

hile people are so ill today with multiple conditions, the coffee enema is part of the protocol to support the liver and allow easier healing to occur. The “coffee implant” is an 8to 24-ounce solution of coffee infused into the rectum and retained for 15 minutes for the purpose of detoxifying and supporting the liver. The large intestines are cleared out first to allow the coffee implant solution to remain in the rectum without urgency. Upon implant, the caffeine from the coffee goes from the hemorrhoidal veins in the rectum area into the portal veins to the liver. In his book, A Cancer Therapy: Results in Fifty Cases, Max Gerson, M.D. chronicled his use of coffee enemas as part of his natural cancer healing protocol beginning in the 1930s.

Qigong and Enlightenment

Y qigong is a practice of finding our true self and connecting our true self to the universe. It’s not a practice that’s based on knowledge, but rather direct transmission from practitioners. Mark Frighetti will be teaching level one in a ZY qigong intensive, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., November 18 and 19. Qigong is about leaving what is commonly known and opening our hearts to the greater mysteries of nature, thus releasing oneself to flow within nature. It is a practice that uses our physical body as our greatest gift and guide for self-empowerment and deep transformation. It’s not about transcending from our daily life on earth but rather making earth one of our greatest supports and allies in this transformation. There’s a reason why human beings stand between earth and sky. Many ancient teachings say that with an incarnated body, we can reach enlightenment in a lifetime. While dis-incarnated, it may take a soul eons. This practice is through the body, not leaving the body or disregarding it. Staying grounded while opening the heart and flowing with nature simplifies this transformation.

treating stroke paralysis, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Acupuncture can also help support cognitive function and slow the decline from Parkinson’s symptoms. A study done in 2002 by the Department of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine revealed 20 Parkinson’s patients were treated with 16 sessions of acupuncture. Eighty-five percent of those patients reported improvement of symptoms, including tremors, walking, handwriting, slowness, pain, sleep, depression and anxiety. There were no adverse effects. Photobiomodulation (PBM) Therapy is the use of a low-intensity laser or LED light source on our biological system. Beneficial outcomes include alleviation of pain and inflammation, immunomodulation, promotion of wound healing and tissue regeneration. PBM is on the fringe of today’s therapy treatments because it does not have an avenue in the Western medical industry at this time. However, many studies presented at PBM conferences around the world in the last 10 years show the positive effects of this therapy when applied through the scalp and nasal cavity on patients with traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Furthermore, the therapy is proving not only absolutely safe but without any adverse side effects. This is a very important point when so often a patient has to compromise side effects for relief of their primary medical conditions. These acupuncture and PBM therapies can be applied together in one session when a patient is either sitting upright or laying down comfortably. The therapies can even prove relaxing in an environment where soft music and low lighting encourage a sense of peaceful relaxation. These two therapies will be presented and explored in-depth in a workshop sponsored by HanLing Acupuncture Healing Center, from 1 to 4 p.m., October 28, at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center. In addition to Liu’s acupuncture and PBM therapies, there will be four supplemental healing modalities presented at the workshop. Each modality has been empirically and/or scientifically shown to slow down the progression of the disease and/or alleviate Parkinson’s symptoms. Movement and massage therapies

have proven to alleviate symptoms associated with Parkinson’s as well as to improve movement and function in activities of daily living. In this workshop, Joe Pinella, a well-known qigong/Tai Chi practitioner, will present his incredible story of self-healing to overcome a quadriplegic diagnosis. Through his miraculous healing, Pinella developed his business, called Healing Movement Systems, and he has been using the system to help many patients with Parkinson’s disease move better and enjoy more quality of life. Maria Mitchell will address stiff muscles, tremors and symptoms of constipation. Mitchell’s master’s in Gerontology, over two decades of experience as a massage therapist, as well as certification in Yoga Therapy, makes her an expert in her field. Neuromuscular Therapy can improve muscular movements and alleviate tremors, while Chinese Abdominal Massage (known as CNT) and yoga poses can help address issues of constipation that are often associated with Parkinson’s conditions. Parkinson’s patients being able to ride a bicycle was first reported by a clinic in the Netherlands in 2012. Additionally, a 2010 study showed an exercise method called assisted exercise using tandem bicycles. This method can be highly beneficial to a Parkinson’s patient’s shuffling gait and hand trembling. The study describes a captain in the front seat of a tandem bicycle pedaling at a very high pace, with

For Mind-Body Health, Visit Yume Japanese Gardens

W

hether heading for the beach at Rocky Point, the hiking trails in Saguaro National Park and Sabino Canyon, the cool forests on Mt. Lemmon or simply going for a walk in Tucson’s Reid Park after a hard day, we all instinctively know that getting out into natural surroundings makes us feel better. The healing power of nature is not simply anecdotal. Where the human hand has intervened vigorously in nature—say, to create a garden—the restorative effects can be even greater. This is especially true of Japanese garden settings. Scientific research is documenting that the design principles and plantings of these gardens are the most effec-

tive of all natural or created landscapes in benefiting visitors. The therapeutic value of a Japanese garden appears in different ways. Japanese studies have shown that visitors are more relaxed, because what they see induces slow alpha brain waves, identical to those of someone who takes time out to reflect or meditate. They enter an “alpha state”. People who regularly visit Japanese gardens report decreased feelings of sadness, anxiety, stress and loneliness. To enhance this experience, Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson offers a research-supported 12-week Stroll for Well-Being Program, open to anyone suffering from grief, PTSD, depression, the uncertainty of serious illness or other emotional distress. Participants report greater feelings of happiness and joy afterward. Japanese gardens do more than simply lift our mood, however. They also provide a variety of positive physical effects. Mind-body medical research is leading growing numbers of U.S. hospitals to install Japanese gardens for patients. Regular visits or viewing lowers blood pressure and muscle tension and boosts the immune system through increased white blood cell counts. Patients with access to Japanese gardens also use fewer painkillers and suffer somewhat lower rates of postsurgical complications. Yume Japanese Gardens of Tucson is located at 2130 N. Alvernon Way, one block south of the Tucson Botanical Gardens. It is open October 1 to May 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For information about the Gardens and the Stroll for Well-Being program, call 520-303-3945 or visit YumeGardens.org.

Top 10 Ways to Put More Cash in Your Pocket by Kevin Marshall

C

ash really is king. Cash flow is what it is all about, and cash flow problems can kill businesses. According to a U.S. Bank study, 82 percent of business failures are due to poor cash management. Here are some great ways to keep more cash in your business’ pocket.

1

Profits aren’t cash. Profits are accounting. You can’t pay vendors or employees with profits, only cash. You can spend all your cash on assets like equipment and then wonder where the profits are.

2

Don’t treat your business as a money tree. Numerous business owners suck every ounce of life (cash) out of their company and then wonder why they have cash flow problems.

3 4 5

Growing businesses suck up more cash than you think. Growth costs cash—and more cash. The faster a business grows, the more financing is needed. Track KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). KPIs are used to measure success. Fill in the blank: “By not using KPIs, I am setting myself up for _______.”

Stay current (ideally, daily) on accounting. Timely financial reporting exposes problems before they become nightmares and also identifies opportunities for growth. Timeliness = more cash.

6 7 8 9 10

Receivables are bad. Receivables is cash in a customer’s bank account that belongs to you.

Get a business line of credit. It’s much easier to obtain financing when we don’t need it. Get a business line of credit now, before the you-know-what hits the fan. Keep a rainy day fund. Excess cash on hand eliminates a lot of stress. Get customers to pay faster. Use a free service like BlisPay (six-month, no-interest credit card for customers). Measure, measure, measure. What gets measured gets done.

TRANSFORMATIVE

TRAVEL Outer Adventures, Inner Journeys by April Thompson

An open-hearted journey can take unexpected paths. More travelers today are searching for deep and lasting changes in their view of themselves and the world.

Declare Your Intentions

Part of the intention setting is clarifying what we hope to accomplish through making a journey, suggests Nathaniel Boyle, creator of The Travelers podcast and the travel platform Holocene that facilitates community among transformation-seeking travelers. It might be climbing a mountain with our spouse to strengthen a marriage, or taking a cooking class in Italy or a basket weaving workshop in Indonesia to rekindle a sense of fresh input and creative expression.

Cousineau suggests that travelers prepare to open their thinking by reading about the history, culture and geography of a place, and then continue to learn en route by talking to locals for insight rather than relying only on a guidebook. “Make yourself vulnerable. Ask questions and be humble. Talk to your waiter or cab driver about their lives and conditions in their country. Those that become most delighted and transformed by their experiences are the most curious,” observes Cousineau. Anna Pollock, of London, England, founder of Conscious Travel and a sustainable travel expert, elaborates on potential results. “Travelers may see the world and their part in it differently or feel greater clarity, peace, freedom or hope. For some, it’s about insights into their personal purpose. Others may return with a deeper sense of connectedness or feeling of mastery that comes from trying something completely new.” Jake Haupert, of Seattle, owner of Evergreen Escapes International, co-founded the Transformational Travel Council to help people embark on such life-altering journeys, and translate “Aha!” moments on the road into meaningful changes back home. He has witnessed individuals undergo radical shifts from changing careers to becoming parents. One couple was so moved by their experiences on an African safari that they adopted their first child from Kenya.

mimagephotography/Shutterstock.com

Attention and intention are the main ingredients for transformative travel for Phil Cousineau, acclaimed author of The Art of Pilgrimage. “Ask yourself what is motivating the journey: Are you going just to check something off your bucket list because you read about it or are you going because your grandma told you how magical her visit there was in the 1920s? Are you going because you’re at a crossroads in your life, marriage or work?” queries Cousineau. Naming your intention helps open up the heart and psyche for transformation. Cousineau recommends sharing our choice beforehand with a friend or even a casual acquaintance. Writing it down can also unpack those yearnings and understand the pull to a place.

Move Beyond Comfort

“Travel can serve as a vehicle for expansive personal growth. Through it, we learn to explore the world and ourselves,” Boyle observes. “When you venture outside the controlled environment of prepackaged trips for tourists to face difficult decisions and confusing and chaotic situations that require problem solving, that’s where real change can occur,” says Haupert. “My 12,000-mile journey from Washington, D.C., to Antarctica was transformative in so many ways,” says journalist Andrew Evans, author of The Black Penguin memoir. “I’m a geographer by training and spent four years studying maps, but I never understood the true size of the world until I traveled across it on a Greyhound bus. I now see the world as much smaller and much more accessible. The trip made me a stronger, more confident person, and less afraid of what other people think of me; it also made me want to keep traveling.” “Travel comes from the word travail, to labor, and trip from tripalium, Latin for a medieval torture rack. Metaphorically, travel can feel like torture at times, and some travelers feel unhappy, unprepared, bored or disappointed,” remarks Cousineau. “But the flip side is that travels can stretch us, just like a medieval rack.”

If you have stretch goals, you can build them into an itinerary, advises Haupert, whether it’s getting up the courage to skydive or negotiating a purchase in a foreign street market.

Do Less, Experience More

To heighten experiential awareness while traveling, build fewer to-dos into an itinerary, the experts recommend. “Immerse yourself in a place. Leave time for unplanned explorations, rather than bouncing between destinations without space for spontaneity and restful reflection,” says Haupert. “Also build in time for meditation, yoga, simple relaxation or other intentionally restorative moments in-between the high-intensity peak experiences.” Haupert suggests staging a ceremonial start to a journey, such as a special dinner or bike ride upon arrival. Similarly, Cousineau recommends starting a new journal on every journey, to ceremoniously start anew in one’s thinking. Engaging in ritual can also help awaken the traveler, says Cousineau. He suggests walking in silence as we approach a sacred site, or physically engaging with it, as pilgrims might do when they palm the feet of a Buddha statue or press their forehead to the Wailing Wall. Sacred sites are fertile ground for transformative experiences, says Lori Erickson, an Episcopal deacon, travel

writer and author of Holy Rover: Journeys in Search of Mystery, Miracles, and God, a memoir of her trips to a dozen of the world’s holy sites. “So many people have prayed and opened their hearts in a holy place that you can feel the energy,” she says. Erickson suggests that travelers seek out hallowed ground from different traditions, which can help heal divides among people of divergent faiths. “The art and architecture of holy sites are beautiful manifestations of spiritual longing and human creativity. These places have the power to move you, regardless of your own spiritual background.”

Drive Home Transformation

Starting with a moment of reflection before departing a place, take advantage of a trip’s afterglow to recall insights learned, gel memories, share insights and move to make changes stick. Haupert sees this as a good time to develop an action plan to “express gratitude for the journey and create a framework for your homecoming.” Then, take a day to reflect upon returning home before jumping back into work or other obligations, internalAdventure travelers izing your experience and integrating named transformation and your “traveler self” back into normalcy. What brought you to the path of becoming a visual artist? It’s either a fairly long and complicated story or explained most succinctly with these two words: my mother. She was an unrequited painter who filled our home with objects and images from around the world.

he history of Arizona is a story of multiple cultures: their arrival, their impact, their displacement. Historically, people native to any land are displaced by waves of people who arrive and lay claim. This cycle could be viewed as one of the most common threads throughout all human history—across time and space. In this way, Arizona history is a microcosm of the history of cultures worldwide. In her current body of mixed-media paintings, Tucson artist Carolyn King directs the viewer’s attention to the six major cultures that have been displaced and have “laid claim” throughout Arizona’s evolution. On exhibit at The Joel Valdez Public Library downtown, each painting honors a woman representing one of six cultures that have formed the Tucson of today. The exhibit is on display from October 2 to 30, with receptions on October 7 and 28, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. 30

And yet, you have persevered. Tell us about the current body of work on exhibit at the downtown library on Stone Avenue. The title of the show, “Las Damas del Desierto”, refers to the role women played in settling and forming the society we have here in Tucson today. In this work, I wanted to reflect metaphorically on the relationship between the roots that we, as people, put down, to the roots desert plants use to sustain themselves. While working on these images, I thought a lot about hair follicles as a root system for the body, and how our veins and capillaries are seen as inner highways. I thought about how the women who came as settlers from each culture brought roots, both physical and emotional, from her background with her as she created families, households and meaning. The intersection of the beauty and challenges of desert living with the choices each person makes has written the story of the Southwest. How does Arizona’s history of displacement and “claiming” intersect with your own life? You know, I wasn’t consciously asking myself that question when I proposed to create this body of work for the library show. What happened is that once I started doing some research, I realized two very personal connections to the theme for me. First, I am myself, a Dama del Desierto. I left my home and family of origin at age 17. In an indirect way, I ended up in the High Desert of Central Mexico where I lived, studied and worked for over 20 years. I relocated to Tucson from Mexico in 1999. In essence, I have been a Lady of the Desert now for 40-plus years. I have profound roots in Mexico and have been dramatically influenced as a woman, an artist and a mother by my experiences with native cultures on both sides of the border. The second thing I realized, once into creating the images, is that my affinity

So, you were encouraged and supported to become an artist as a child? Quite the contrary, actually. I think I became an artist and a teaching-artist from an unconscious desire to heal my mother. In reality, she seemed to view my interest in the arts as competitive. She wasn’t able to be either encouraging or supportive. I was in her “personal territory”!

and respect for these particular cultures comes directly from my mother. She collected fabric, arts and crafts and photographs from each of the cultures represented in my paintings. In this way, the show is also an homage to her. She passed away in April of 2016, when I was just starting the group of paintings for this exhibit.

In the series of interviews you have conducted for Natural Awakenings, the last question you have asked each of the artists has been about how each artist views his or her art form as healing. Can you speak to that question about your own work? Creating this body of work has been an amazing and deeply healing experience for me on several levels. Storytelling. Humans learn best when seeing and hearing stories. Facts don’t arouse us as much as narratives and full-body experiences do. Bombarding people with facts won’t create desired change. We must be inspired to act on the knowledge.

Elders. Shared history, respect and affection are vital to belonging. Adults coping with a highstress, industrialized culture might tend to find elders’ stories slow-moving and boring, but they are a critical resource for our collective survival. Beware of the “star from afar” syndrome that posits outsiders as experts, rather than honoring and developing our own community resources, which won’t disappear at the end of an event.

9 Creating Community Provide food and drink. Traditional societies have always taken hospitality seriously. Having people bring items to add to the collective feast is better than catering.

Gifts and sharing. As we focus on creating a sharing society versus a gimme culture, it’s nice to give small gifts such as a plant or garden flower, organic seeds or regifted items to event attendees. It’s a simple way to help everyone feel valued, appreciated and welcomed. The key is keeping events local, simple and created by the community for the community. Many hands make light work, and some of the best community events cost the host little, while everyone involved brings their own chair or blanket, serving ware and potluck dish.

15 Ways to Craft a Circle of Caring by Linda Buzzell

Build a campfire. Whether literal or metaphoric, create a clear, focused attraction that draws people into a circle.

Connect with nature and the seasons. Tying gatherings into what’s happening seasonally with all life forms is a traditionally effective way of fostering community.

3

Welcome each person. Either designate greeters or go around the circle welcoming and acknowledging each participant before proceeding with the event’s main activity. People that feel seen and known are more likely to stay involved.

hiropractic medicine is known for its non-surgical approach to chronic pain and other musculoskeletal conditions, but also has much more to offer. However, finding the right doctor can be as daunting as shopping for a comfortable pair of shoes. Here, three reputable practitioners talk about securing individualized care and getting the most out of chiropractic.

Address Specific Needs

Clarifying the desired outcome is helpful, because some clients are just looking for a quick fix to reduce pain,

while others may be seeking overall better health, lasting wellness and an improved quality of life. “Due to insurance issues, we’ve become known as pain doctors, but that’s not the full extent of chiropractic,” explains Dr. Michelle Robin, owner of Your Wellness Connection and the educational DrMichelleRobin.com website, in Shawnee, Kansas. “Also, you can see more than one chiropractor, as each has their own strength.” Dr. Michael Aho, of Crosstown Chiropractic, in Chicago, agrees. “Chiropractic care encompasses many styles, so one of the biggest variables

is the type of treatment the doctor uses. Most offices commonly treat neck, mid-back and low back pain. If you have a specific shoulder, knee or foot problem, you may want to find a doctor that frequently treats those issues. If you are pregnant, choose a chiropractor that has experience working with pregnant women.” “There are more than 140 different chiropractic techniques. Some are light touch, while others are aggressive. Some are hands-on and some use instruments for adjusting. It’s important that the doctor’s approach resonates with your nature,” advises Dr. Jackie St.Cyr of the Innate Chiropractic Healing Arts Center, in Houston. Robin advises that sitting in a doctor’s reception room to just observe and trusting our intuition is helpful before moving forward with a consultation.

Ask Questions

First, find out if a chiropractor has embraced either a conventional medical or holistic model, and then delve more deeply to find the right approach and level of care. “Ask how long a doctor has practiced and their governing philosophy. Do they treat the full spine or focus on the point of pain, and what range of techniques do they apply? You want them to know your spine before they adjust it; make sure they conduct a new patient exam,” suggests St.Cyr. An exam may include a thermography scan and X-rays. Helpful questions include what to expect during the initial visit, recommended frequency of treatment, the desired doctor’s office hours and how treatment might benefit a particular condition. Because most chiropractic offices offer compatible treatments, also ask about complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage therapy, heat therapy, and interferential current therapy using minute electrical pulses for deep tissue pain relief.

Be Consistent

“You shouldn’t expect instant results,” says Aho. “You’ll benefit the most if you don’t wait too long after first experiencing symptoms of a problem before starting treatment, and are consistent with your treatment.” Being proactive can foster good results. St.Cyr concurs, stating, “When patients follow their chiropractor’s recommended routine of regular corrective care, they get the best results. Be consistent with visits and do your customized spinal exercises; they’ve been proven to work.” Robin expounds that not following through with homecare is a common pitfall for patients. “Like dental care, you always need to do something for your spine every day, be it stretching, other exercise or good nutrition.” She notes that everyone’s response to chiropractic is different. “Be realistic. If you’ve experienced injuries or accidents, it will take longer, and your healing might look different from that of someone else that is free of injuries and follows a healthier diet. Sometimes people give up on chiropractic instead of finding a chiropractor that is good for them. You wouldn’t give up going to the dentist, and the same should apply to chiropractic care.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. Connect at MarlainaDonato.com.

assage therapy, which can significantly reduce pain (and the experience of pain), can also reduce inflammation and accompanying risk factors. This allows the body to heal itself. When a body is injured, the inflammation response is a good thing; it helps the injured area to heal. But when inflammation becomes chronic and long-term, health declines and the risk of debilitating diseases increases. Our bodies are biologically built to heal themselves, and they have an amazing system to do this: the inflammatory process. According to many medical sources, an injured area typically has a three-month “acute healing” phase followed by a two-year phase of long-term healing, which is often accompanied by lower-level inflammation. However, the health challenge occurs when this long-term healing phase does not complete, and inflammation becomes chronic and continuing. Then, if the body is re-injured, infection occurs, or chronic disease begins, it is difficult for the immune system to both alleviate pain and attend to all the other areas of disease. As Amy Bradley Radford summarizes, “The body can either fight pain or heal. It does not do both at the same time very well.” Fortunately, in these situations, massage therapy can bring much relief, both by alleviating pain during and after sessions and, most significantly, by allowing the body to direct more of its immune-system resources to healing the body’s deeper, underlying issues. Imagine that the body is a firefighter who can now stop putting out a bunch of little wildfires (pains from inflammation) and begin the deeper work of planting trees and restoring the forest (the healing of underlying issues). Skilled massage therapy helps “put out the fires” by helping the body experience a drop in heart rate and nerve impulses, a change in hormone output that soothes the body, a reduction in physical pain and emotional/mental stress and improved lymph drainage. The body rests—and takes care of the rest. When working with chronic inflammation issues, it is very important to receive massage therapy from a skilled therapist with the experience and knowledge of a variety of modalities, who can carefully choose the right treatment and tailor the levels of pressure for each area of the body.

FOODIE GUIDE

TUMERICO:

Food was always important in Garcia’s life. A now svelte Garcia candidly reveals, “As a child, I was really chubby. My dad was a farmer and the best chef ever. We got our vegetables from the garden and rarely went to the store for food. It was all about food when I was growing up.” Garcia is open about the genesis of owning her own restaurant. She relates, “I worked at restaurants since I was 18. I got burnt out working at them, and wanted to get back to basics. I opened a stand at the farmers’ market. I sold tamales there, and then I got a cart. When the current location became available, I told the landlord, ‘I want this place.’” The location is a cozy, urban, contemporary setting, which features an open kitchen.

The Spice is Right by Suzie Agrillo

hef Wendy Garcia loves yoga, chai tea and nature, but she’s always thinking about food. She maintains, “To have a successful restaurant, you need to have a passion for what you do.” Garcia possesses that fiery passion, and with her innovative recipes she continues to reach new heights at Tumerico. While Garcia changes her mouthwatering menu every day, you are likely to find tacos and other Latin dishes on her daily chalkboard. The majority of the delicious menu is prepared vegan and gluten free with organic and locally sourced ingredients. “My ingredients come from New Life Health Center, local farmers’ markets and Native Seeds,” she remarks.

Customers can satiate their taste buds with her tantalizing and spicy food. “My food has a lot of spices—the key for flavorful food is spices,” she says. “You can have just a few ingredients, and if you add spices, you can make food super tasty. I try not to make my food too spicy for my customers, though.” You could consider Garcia’s food to be health food, but aside from nutrition, it delivers a meal full of appealing flavors. One of the trademarks of her thriving restaurant is the use of turmeric in most of the dishes. “Turmeric is antiinflammatory, anti-cancer and I like the color; it’s full of life,” she says. Another trademark is that every meal includes a bowl of soup and a cup of coffee at no extra charge.

Tumerico Tamales

Tumerico Tostadas Garcia attributes her attention to customers as another key to her success in a competitive market. “Customers come here not just to pay for food, but for my energy,” she maintains. “You really have to care about the customers; it’s not about money as a goal.” She 38

emphasizes the importance of forming a relationship with clients. She teaches customer service to her team and employees know the customer is always first. She states, “I hire employees who care and who share my passion for excellence.” Catering is another side of Garcia’s business. She says, “I enjoy catering and the demand has been growing. I cater Latino food, and sometimes curry. I bring the food and set it up on the table, but I don’t stay for food service, which makes things less complicated.” Garcia has one cautionary warning regarding food portions at Tumerico. She light-heartedly advises, “We serve big plates. It’s a lot of food, so you better come here hungry.” On November 11, this culinary powerhouse is celebrating the oneyear anniversary of her restaurant and expanding into the space next door. “I’m going to have a community event with yoga, music and a (vegan) hot dog cart when I move into the new space. I want to take it step by step, so I’m only going to add a few tables. I need to have time to talk to customers and treat them like family,” she enthuses. “It is not like one more restaurant. It is a community concept.” Tumerico is located at 2526 E. 6th St., in Tucson. Connect at 520-270-2055 or Tumerico.com.

Place a snug-fitting plate inside the crock or bowl over the salsa-water mixture; then weigh it down with food-safe weights or a bowl or jar of water, so the vegetables remain submerged under the brine as they ferment. Cover with a lid or a cloth, and allow it to ferment five to seven days, checking periodically to ensure the salsa is still submerged below the water line. If any mold forms on the surface, simply scoop it out. It won’t spoil the salsa unless it gets deeper inside the crock. (It may form where the mixture meets the air, but it rarely forms deeper.) After one week, put the salsa in jars or a bowl, cover and place in the fridge, where it usually lasts up to a year.

The cashew milk will become somewhat bubbly, then will begin to coagulate and separate; shake it to remix the kefir or scoop out the thicker curds and use them like soft cheese or sour cream.

FELINE WORKFORCE Why a Job is the Cat’s Meow by Sandra Murphy

S

ome cats started their careers in barns with minimal job opportunities. With updated skills, they now boost office morale, encourage reading, promote products and provide therapy. Community cats even work in private security.

In the Office Millennials, now comprising a third of this country’s stressed-out labor force, according to the Pew Research Center and American Psychological Association, are among those that can benefit from having a cat around. Lowered blood pressure is

Jobs for Cats: Purrs for Autism

P

urrs for Autism brings Hermitage Cat Shelter cats who are social and curious to spend one-on-one time with autistic children 6 to 12 years of age, every Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., at WorkAbility office, in Tucson. The program is a collaboration of The Hermitage Cat Shelter, The Autism Society of Southern Arizona and WorkAbility, a program of United Cerebral Palsy of Southern Arizona. Purrs for Autism is based on recent studies of the positive effect relationships with animals have on the social abilities of kids with autism. The outreach program from the Hermitage serves Pima County, and includes peer mentorship between older kids (ages 13 to 18) who face disabilities and are in job readiness training at WorkAbility, and younger autistic participants. A variety of games, puzzles and reading materials are supplied to provide interest for participants as they interact with shelter cats. Location: WorkAbility, 601 N. Craycroft Rd., Tucson. one result, according to research by psychologist Karen Allen, Ph.D., conducted at the University at Buffalo. Even when comfort breaks are hard to schedule, insistent cats cannot be ignored. “Pompous Albert, a rejected show cat, works at SafeWise, in Salt Lake City,” relates Sage Singleton, who handles Albert’s Instagram account. “He boosts morale, reduces stress and provides entertainment.” Carlos, a former rescue kitten, greets employees at PetNovations, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, each morning. He’s the star of the corporate Instagram account and blog, and promotes the company’s eco-friendly Cat Genie litterless cat box. Smith’s Ace Hardware and Housewares, in Princeton, New Jersey, has Dusty patrol its 18,000-square-foot facility, often escorting customers along the aisles. At St. Augustine Health Ministries, in Cleveland, the furry receptionist is Oreo. This black-and-white stray claimed the job by installing herself at the front desk to welcome guests and visit with residents that miss having their own pet.

Therapists At the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco, Duke Ellington Morris visits with patients while nurses check vital signs; he’s part of an animalassisted therapy program through the city’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. With the help of his humans, Jessica and Eric Hagan, of Pennsylvania’s Wolf Creek Township, Draven was certified through a local Love on a Leash chapter that qualifies pet-provided therapy animals. He showed My Cat From Hell host Jackson Galaxy his hospital routine for a segment called “My Cat From Heaven.” Draven regularly visits the Grove City Medical Center, in Pine Township, local nursing homes and service groups.

Literacy Aids “At 18, Cleo, my small, gray cat, retired from therapy visits and missed the attention,” says Michelle Cardosi, a retail clerk in Silt, Colorado. “Kids reading to her at the school library provided a solution that satisfied everyone.”

In 2010, the public library in White Settlement, Texas, adopted Browser to remedy a rodent problem. Five years later, the city council cited pending renovations and a potential impact on allergies in backing a motion to oust Browser. Supporters, pointing out that the cat brought children through the doors, successfully petitioned to keep the fourlegged employee.

Working cats of many stripes are becoming increasingly common. For a business, it’s a money-saver; for a cat, it’s a lifesaver.

Private Security Less socially developed feral felines can provide needed services. The Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats rescues such cats from Los Angeles shelters. Each is vetted, spayed/neutered and microchipped. “When they’re adopted out in threes, community cats are more likely to stay on the job,” notes founder and headmistress Shawn Simons. “In Southern California, working cats are employed as assistants to brewmasters at the Monkish Brewery to protect the grain and hops and at Saluti Cellars as vintner support in charge of gopher population control,” says Simons. “More traditionally, cats at the Portuguese Bend Riding Club barn discourage mice and make friends with horses and riders.” The school’s Working Cat Program partners with area recycling centers, golf courses, warehouses and industrial parks that could otherwise lose hundreds of millions of dollars annually due to vermin-related structural damage, including gnawed wiring and other potential fire hazards. “Businesses get an all-natural, safe and effective way to control pests and cats live life naturally,” says Simons. Working cats of many stripes are becoming increasingly common. For a business, it’s a money-saver; for a cat, it’s a lifesaver.
