e are so pleased to announce our brand new Plant Medicine section, starting this month: Nature is my Medicine. This has been a labor of love and well-being, as we’re realizing the wide use and efficacy of various plants as medicine. Plant medicine is emerging as a powerful ally in the war on drugs. It’s strange how using herbs, plants, roots, flowers and bark as medicine is considered alternative, or off the beaten path, when in reality, it’s the oldest and most natural way to treat and cure countless maladies that plague the human race. Looking at all the options and benefits of cannabis available right now, it’s important for readers to understand their choices.

Starting on page 30, take a look at not only the mediciHolly Baker, publisher nal benefits of nature’s plants like cannabis and components such as CBD, but also herbs we have readily available in our kitchen cabinets or gardens. Each month we’ll be putting the spotlight on a different herb as well, with a brief overview of what it is and why it’s powerful. Speaking of gardens, check out the in-depth look at what the herbicide Roundup, or glyphosate, actually does to the human body, on page 28. Education is important when choosing any product we use in or outside our homes, but glyphosate could be harming us in other ways, simply because our neighbors may be using the toxin. Anne Blessing shares ways to limit our risk of exposure in our food, water and air.

Studying Music Can Be Life Changing and Healing

“Y

ou feel drawn to play music because you are music. The music wants to come out of you. When you discover the music that wants to come out of you, it will change your life and you’ll become more of who you’re meant to be,” says Suzanne Grosvenor, who teaches music to children and adults. Grosvenor has openings for a few students and for personal Therapeutic Music sessions at her studio in northwest Tucson, all on a grand piano. Suzanne Grosvenor Grosvenor teaches beginning to advanced piano and coaches instrumentalists and vocalists in expanding their creativity and finding their musical voice. She also teaches at Music and Arts School. From a young age, Grosvenor related to music as her first language. She performed her own compositions in concerts from age 8. Her music has premiered in film festivals around the world and she toured the U.S. with bands playing rock, jazz and blues. Early in her career, she was a winner in a concerto contest and received scholarships to study at San Francisco Conservatory of Music and ASU, where she majored in music. Whether seeking to learn classical repertoire, improvisation, jazz, blues, boogie, stride piano, folk, rock, atmospheric music, theory or to write original music, lessons are custom made to suit clients’ goals. “Music is a vehicle for cultivating richness in life, increasing calm and serenity, creativity and joy, self-discovery, inner strength and confidence,” enthuses Grosvenor. Email Suzanne@MusicForHealth.net to request a free, 15-minute phone consultation. For more information, call 520-229-6282 or visit MusicForHealth.net.

Muscles In Motion Myotherapy

A

ndrea Johnson, Certified Master Bonnie Prudden Myotherapist, is now providing myotherapy treatments in Tucson. “Since 95 percent of all pain is muscular related in some way, myotherapy can be effective for fibromyalgia, back pain, circulation problems, swelling, sciatica, headaches and more,” she says. Bonnie Prudden Myotherapy is a method of relaxing muscle spasm, imAndrea Johnson proving circulation and alleviating pain. To defuse trigger points, pressure is applied to the muscle for several seconds by means of fingers, knuckles and elbows. The newly relaxed muscles are then passively stretched and the patient is given a series of corrective exercises to be used at home to help keep the muscles free from pain. Myotherapy has been very successful in treatment for athletes, artists, musicians, singers and computer operators, as well as other occupations. For 13 years, Johnson had been a test car driver, testing vehicle performance through rough and all-weather terrain. While recuperating from serious injury, she happened to view Bonnie Prudden on a television show, and there began the process of relief from pain that Johnson promotes to others today. Save Your Back By Moving with BungoBox

W

hen moving a home or office, people are often lifting heavy objects and putting their back at risk. BungoBox has devised a system that will allow users to pack and unpack completely without ever having to lift a heavy box. BungoBox Arizona rents eco-friendly, reusable moving boxes for both residential and commercial use. The secret is in their wheeled dollies. Users simply put an empty BungoBox in the fitted wheeled dolly and load it up. When that box is loaded, close the lid and stack another empty box on top. Continue this process while pushing the stack around the home or office and packing up the next area. The boxes don’t even have to be lifted to move them; simply wheel them up into the moving truck and tie them down. When arriving at the new home or office, simply reverse the process to unpack, only lifting empty boxes from the top of the stack. “Joint health is no joke, and one of the most common places of pain due to injury is the lower back. People often injure their backs when attempting to lift heavy items, twisting or some other sudden movement,” says Heather Rosson, owner of BungoBox. “Even people who are in great shape and are young can injure their back by lifting incorrectly. Remember when lifting heavy objects to lift with your legs and not bend over at the waist.”

Bisbee ’17 Revisits Arizona’s Dark Past at The Loft Cinema

B

eginning September 14, The Loft Cinema will host screenings of Bisbee ’17. In Bisbee ’17, filmmaker Robert Greene (Kate Plays Christine) bends the boundaries of documentary and confronts the current political predicaments of immigration, unionization, environmental damage and corporate corruption with direct, haunting messages about solidarity and struggle, creating a unique, thoughtprovoking film that stirs up the ghosts of our past as a cautionary tale that speaks to our present. It’s 2017 in Bisbee, Arizona, an old copper-mining town just miles from the Mexican border. The town’s close-knit community prepares to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bisbee’s darkest hour: the infamous Bisbee Deportation of 1917, during which 1,200 striking miners were violently taken from their homes, banished to the middle of the desert and left to die. Townspeople confront this shocking, controversial past by staging dramatic recreations of the escalating miners’ strike. These dramatized scenes are based on subjective versions of the story and “directed”, in a sense, by residents with conflicting views of the event. Deeply personal segments torn from family history build toward a massive restaging of the deportation itself on the exact day of its 100th anniversary. Location: 3233 E. Speedway Blvd., Tucson. Tucson Woman Finds Relief From Her Crippling Fibromyalgia, Pain And Fatigue! "Before my treatment I was constantly feeling pain and having to use pain meds. It was impossible to predict any 'good' days that I could go shopping or just out for fun. And, after having a 'good' day I'd be in bed for 3 days recuperating. Constant 'brain fog.' I was embarrassed because I couldn't have a complete conversation. I suffered from horrible digestive pain and food sensitivities and felt flu-like and fatigued! I suffered from anxiety preventing me from going out in public. I was treated with all sorts of drugs, the last one being Zoloft. Insomnia is an issue I have suffered with for years and I went from one drug to the next and often upped the doses. I feared not being able to sleep.” "After my Treatment Program at Tucson Biofeedback I am living a normal life. I can plan trips, dinner with friends, play with my grandkids. Those days of being bedridden haven't come but once. My muscles feel normal, energy flowing through them instead of pain! I am able to go into public without panic. I am able to get a good night's rest at last! I am settling back into a normal, healthy, and relaxed body, one I have not known in about 9 years" Debbie M - Tucson, AZ.

Sitting is the New Smoking

M

ost of us are familiar with the dangers of smoking. Yet, we don’t know just how dangerous it is to be sedentary. Even people who work out three times a week can be affected. If we sit all day at work and then go to the gym for an hour, we are still largely sedentary. Evolutionarily, we were designed to be moving most of our waking hours. Constant sitting leads to muscle atrophy, which can mean problems with the heart, blood clots, osteoporosis, diabetes, poor sleep, depression and cognitive decline. We don’t need to go to the gym to rectify this problem. Just look for OTMs (opportunities to move) throughout the day. This includes activities such as parking farther away, using the stairs, cleaning the house, doing yard work or parking the car and walking to several stores close by. Walk the dog twice a day instead of once—they’ll appreciate it, too. Stand up from that desk every 15 minutes to walk in place or stretch for 30 seconds. While driving or seated anywhere, move the spine forward and back. Research shows that exercise boosts our mood and our focus. Sometimes we don’t move much because we have low energy or we are in pain. If that is the case, see a chiropractor immediately. No matter what OTM is used, just get moving. How NMT Can Improve Your Game

M

ost people who participate in sports at any level, from a pickup game of hoops to professional level golf, will agree on two things: pain prefers one side of the body, no matter what sport we play; and injuries are not an “if ”, but a “when”. What if we could lessen or even avoid sports injuries? What if we could stop compensating for the sore side of our body? Would we gain an edge over competition? Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) can help our game by creating flexibility where we are tight and strengthening weak areas. In order for the body to avoid pain and trauma, alternating joints throughout the body need stability and mobility. Any restriction in one area will have a referred effect someplace else. Eliminating the restriction, or trigger point, in the muscle, along with stretching and strengthening will increase performance and more importantly, maximize the body’s potential as a whole functional unit. NMT utilizes specific massage therapy, flexibility stretching and home care to eliminate the causes of most neuromuscular pain patterns. This specific and scientific approach to muscular pain relief will help to bring about balance between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. NMT enhances the function of joints, muscles and biomechanics (movement) and it releases endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killers. It is effective on its own, or as part of a comprehensive program, complementing all other modalities. Nathan Morrison, LMT is a Certified Neuromuscular Therapist at Skeleton Key Therapy. He believes each person is unique and not all pain is created equally, but all pain can be reduced or may dissipate completely. His goal is to see you reach your optimal pain-free potential, utilizing Neuromuscular Trigger Point Therapy, breathing techniques and Myofascial Release. Good Nutrition and Exercise Aid Bone and Joint Health

S

tudies have revealed that bone and joint health begins in childhood and can be aided by good nutrition and exercise. There are also some other factors that can affect growing and maintaining good bone health as we age, like cigarette smoking and alcohol. Calcium, vitamin D supplementation, drinking plenty of water and exercise are the cornerstone of having a healthy bone and joint system. Each generation of people brings its own set of recommendations. Young adults should reduce their intake of fast foods, lower their alcohol consumption, eat calcium enriched food and drink water instead of soda drinks. Middle age is a critical period for bone and joint health. Post-menopausal women should increase their calcium intake, but not their calorific intake. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise is also critical in our middle years. Switching out routines helps maintain healthy hip and knee joints. For example, someone who is a runner should change up their routine to incorporate working out at the gym as well. It is even more important to maintain bone health and muscle mass as we age beyond our middle years. Core strengthening exercises like yoga and tai chi can help with balance and reduce the risk of falling. Living a longer life is hardly fun if we are suffering with joint pain as we age. Taking quality, high-grade supplements that have a high absorption factor, reducing inflammation, with a healthy diet and exercise can help keep us healthy from a young adult, into our senior years and beyond. New Alternative for Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia and Autoimmune Disorders

N

altrexone is a medication that has been commercially available for almost 20 years for the treatment of mild to moderate opioid addiction and alcohol dependence. Naltrexone binds to the same receptors as Vicodin, Percocet and Oxycontin to help patients wean off of these opioids. For this indication, the starting dose is usually 50mg. However, the latest research has shown that naltrexone at low doses of 1.5-4.5mg is effective in treating various other conditions. At these low doses, naltrexone works by increasing the release of hormones called endorphins. This increased production of endorphins may promote healing, block cancerous cell growth and decrease inflammation. The potential benefits of this response can be effective in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s disease and fibromyalgia. It can also be effective in disorders such as chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson’s and IBS. Low dose naltrexone, commonly referred to as LDN, is not yet commercially available at retail pharmacies, but can be made locally at a compounding pharmacy. To further evaluate if you could be a candidate for this new cutting-edge therapy, contact a compounding pharmacist for more information and referral to an experienced provider in this field. Knowing What You Want

M

ost people feel confident that they know what they want. However, when they begin to have issues with anxiety, depression and illness, which may or may not have a medical basis, it may be time to journey within. Time to sit down and go on a discovery mission to find out: What do we want? This is the first level that has to be opened in order to uncover the mysteries. It seems like a small thing, but as we age, it becomes so much more valuable to our lives when we know what we want. It differs from what do we “have” to do. We generally have a laundry list of things we must do, and unfortunately these drown out what we want to do. So, in assessing our healing process, when beginning to write down what we want to do, we set ourselves free and endless possibilities begin to show up in life, because the Universe or God has something to work with. We may discover an end to anxiety, depression, gut-related illnesses and the like, simply by getting in touch with ourselves and creating space for our higher self to flourish. Try it sometime—just sit down with a piece of paper and write down what you want. Feel the freedom ooze out of you. Do Dreams Have Meaning?

D

by Helen Landerman

reams can contain valuable information, as is made evident by many examples from history. Albert Einstein’s dreams helped him formulate the theory of relativity. August Kekulé dreamed the circular structure of the Benzene molecule and advanced the science of chemistry in 1865. Niels Bohr, the father of quantum physics, saw the nucleus of the atom with electrons spinning around it in a dream. Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886 dreamed The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and wrote down the text in the ensuing three days. Mary Shelley, in 1816, was inspired to write her novel Frankenstein after awakening from a nightmare. Paul McCartney wrote down the song “Yesterday” after it came to him in a dream. In the above examples, the dream image or text is literally

brought into waking life. Other dreams seem absurd and difficult to understand. Nevertheless, they come in the service of health and wholeness. They don’t come to tell us what we already know, but to break new ground. To have remembered a dream, to write it down and to share it with another person can be signs that it is about an issue which we are now ready to face in our waking life. Dreams speak a language of metaphor which can be intuitively understood by others, and their input can lead us to an “aha” of recognition. Many dreams seem so elusive and melt away as soon as we open our eyes. Nevertheless, we can remember our dreams better by keeping a journal and writing tool beside the bed and making a heartfelt declaration or affirmation to ourselves before sleep such as, “I want to remember my dream,” or, “I will remember my dream.” Having a place to bring dreams—such as belonging to a dream group—also helps dream recall. Dream work in groups can bring out different layers of meaning, using various techniques. We may be blind to the meaning of our own dream, but when we share it with another person and receive their projections, we can come to realize what it is about and how it is helping us. By mining the gold in our dreams, we can learn about our self and our health, and improve intuition and creativity. Helen Landerman has 30 years of experience in dream groups. She has a Harvard Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures, and has been certified by Jeremy Taylor’s Marin Institute for Projective Dreamwork. Joint Health and Yoga by Norma Poplin-Redhouse

E

very year, a kaleidoscope of injured clients parades through massage rooms. Probably 80 percent or more complain about joint pain of one sort or another. Some visit with the same issue year after year, while others are back to normal after just one session. So what makes one client more successful than another in correcting what’s bothering them? Many factors contribute, but let’s focus on long-term habits. Joint health requires the area to be

both strong and flexible. A habit of daily exercise or movement as early in life as possible can help achieve this. It can be as simple as daily walking, swimming or following a fitness tracker’s step goals. Flexibility is one of the most important factors in joint comfort as we age. The common adage “motion is lotion” speaks to the fact that movement helps release the synovial fluid that keeps joints lubricated. This is one reason why too much sitting, whether at work or in front of the TV, is so detri-

mental. The less fluid that is moving, the stiffer one becomes. Patients are given handouts and instructions for doing regular stretches, but often don’t “do their homework”. People are more likely to comply with the advice given by doctors, physical therapists or massage therapists if they have a regular time and place set aside. Yoga is a complete system of balanced movements designed to strengthen and lengthen at the same time. Encouraging clients to attend regular yoga classes at their gym or local studio has worked best. Many kinds of problems can be helped with combinations of yoga, massage, physical therapy and/or chiropractic. For the health of our joints, we would do well to consider establishing a new habit— be it regular massage, ongoing yoga classes or a new fitness routine. Put your wellness first. Creative Process as Meditative Practice

The Imagery of Katherine Monaghan

I

by Carolyn King

n today’s world, we are exposed to and often bombarded by imagery so many times a day that it would be next to impossible to calculate. Imagery informs our choices, our options, our narratives and thus our understanding of the culture we live in. Imagery is designed to serve on so many different levels today. Some imagery is meant to sell products and lifestyles. Some imagery is designed specifically to trigger emotional response. Other imagery sparks our memory or harkens us back to earlier times. Following another path, there is imagery that has been created throughout time and across the globe specifically to encode the magic of The Unseen within their work. Tibetan monks create mandalas made of impermanent sand while chant22

ing prayers. Buddhists have created sacred thangka paintings in Tibet and Nepal, depicting sacred symbols as visual pathways for meditative practice. Navajo/Dine spiritual healers have constructed their own version of sand paintings as healing tools to address unseen forces interrupting the flow of good health in tribal members for generations. Most recently, contemporary artists working along these lines have produced imagery referred to as “visionary” or “transformative” art. Often, these works include extensive reference to the Hindu chakra system or illustrate cosmic energies at work in the natural world. The art work of local artist Katherine Monaghan reflects a very personal relationship with the idea of the creative process as a meditative practice.

What inspired you to embark on the visual arts path?

I have always loved to investigate how things work. As a child, I would get lost for hours in the yard, turning over stones to find out what treasures were underneath, and I still look for and find treasure everywhere I go—plant life, feathers, bones, rocks, rusty objects. I have always been motivated by curiosity. As a child, my sense of curiosity was fed and supported within the culture of my family. My father worked at an ad agency in Manhattan; he was a “Mad Man” while also being an accomplished painter and photographer. My grandmother was a couture designer in St. Louis and I also have a rich familial history of needlepointers, quilters, lace and doll makers. When I think back to my childhood, I have memories of patterns everywhere, from wallpapers and furniture fabrics to clothing. My mother was a researcher and writer who loved and supported the arts. We lived about an hour from New York City so we would go to museums often. She was also a bibliophile with an extraordinary collection of books, including beautiful large format art books. I grew up in a rich, stimulating visual environment.

How did your formal art education unfold?

My first degree was an Associate in Arts in Ceramics from a small school in Massachusetts. From there, I enrolled in The School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, where I took classes for a year. There, I came across a brochure about Western New Mexico University, located in Silver City. The cover of the brochure had a beautiful image of Mimbres pottery on it and I knew immediately that was where I wanted to continue to explore ceramics. It was such an otherworldly experience when I first arrived. Moving from a huge metropolitan city like New York to the desert where tumbleweeds and two-stepping were a fact of life amazed me. I was blown away by the landscape and the “treasures” I discovered in the desert: prickly pear, cholla, juniper berries and the gorgeous landscape. At one point, one of my instructors recommended the University of Arizona as a better fit for me. I ended up transferring to the U. of A. where I pursued a BFA in Illustration. That course of study included classes in drawing and painting, graphic design and printmaking.

Was your graduate work in printmaking aligned at all or related to your current body of work? I came to the MFA program from an illustration background which meant, initially, my prints were all narratives related to my childhood. My drawing skills were recognized, but I was always encouraged to find more to my art making. It became my goal to find methods of making work that I had never seen or heard of before.

How did your current body of work evolve given your time in the MFA program?

I was steeped in the work of contemporary minimalists like Sol LeWitt and Donald Judd. I also loved the grid and circle work Eva Hesse created. I was doing a lot of drawings of knots during my MFA program, thinking about how to transform something usually regarded as “ugly and annoying into something beautiful. Around the same time, I focused on some

Mandala Series 2 by Katherine Monaghan

How did your approach shift over time? After my MFA program, my life continued to evolve as I became mom to two more sons and I included the practice of yoga as part of my life. Working with the washers became a way I could still my mind. My studio time slowly evolved into a counting, prayer and mantra practice. Originally, the washers were used to create large shapes from smaller units. Eventually, the work evolved to be more about patterns. At one point, I went back east to help my brother go through our mother’s things when she was no longer able to live without assistance. I found a small chest filled with hand-work created by my grandmothers and my great-aunts. These pieces included embroidery, handmade dolls and clothing,

by Katherine Monaghan

Actually, my undergraduate studies were postponed when I had my first son at age 23. I returned to complete the BFA when my son was a bit older. In 1999, I was recruited to enter the MFA at the U. of A. program in printmaking.

old rust circles created by a shaving can in the shower. For some, household rust might be considered ugly and unwanted, but I found the circles to be quite beautiful. My studio was across from the railroad track where I would often have scavenger hunts. I found a large, rusted metal washer one day and started wetting it, allowing it to rust on paper. I made beautiful prints with it and wondered how it might look if thousands of washers would work as a piece. I started placing metal washers on paper and experimented with a variety of rusting agents like water, tea, coffee and vinegar. Ultimately I created large pieces that were largely monochromatic.

Did you continue directly into MFA studies after completing the BFA degree?

quilting and lace. I was so moved by the sense of feminine lineage as I held those objects. Each one of them was composed of a myriad of intricate patterns. I felt such a connection between these pieces and my own imagery. Hand-work requires hours of intense, focused, meditative attention just like the rusted washer pieces. Finding these carefully curated pieces made by women in my family allowed me to feel connected to the work of women both in my family and beyond.

Your work clearly serves as a tool for your own contemplative practice. How do you feel the work serves the viewer? I have been told by many people that standing in front of these pieces brings them into a state of calm. It seems that the work draws viewers into a related state of being to what I experience when creating them. In this way, I am able to share that quiet and sense of reflective inner calm with others as they experience the work in person. Connect with Katherine Monaghan at KatMonaghan14@gmail.com. Embracing Our Fluid Life

O

by Diane Dearmore

ur human relationship to water is an ancient one. Each of us is conceived within water and born from it. Our earliest movements were free within water. Our first relationship was with mother, within water. We once dwelled in Mother Ocean. Presently, being made of primarily water, we are little sacs of oceans. Our tears are salt water. Essential, nurturing, peaceful, sacred and healing are just a few words describing the human relationship to water. Water is also a doorway to remembrance of creation. Watsu, also known as aquatic massage, frees the body, mind and spirit in warm salt water. This is a sharing of one woman’s remembrance of creation while receiving Watsu. Stepping into an enclosed salt water pool, I was welcomed into warm salt water by my practitioner. After a few moments, she asked for my hands, and invited me to close my eyes and breathe with her. A slow inhale and the whole pool seemed to rise with my lungs. The exhale lowered me into the waters of the pool and relaxed the waters within me. After a few breaths and an inner intention of healing, I relaxed onto my back, floating while my practitioner supported my head and spine. 24

Tucson Edition

Underwater, the sound of my breath was amplified, my heartbeat audible. With each gentle movement, I let go deeper and deeper into the experience, feeling increasing trust and ease in the nurturing arms of the therapist. Awareness of breath disappeared. Was breathing necessary? The initial welcome evolved into a series of assisted graceful movements, stretches and periods of stillness that gave me a sense of weightlessness, a freedom which lent itself to feeling transcendent of time and space. A joy awoke within. Inside that joy, I forgot everything, only to remember. Suddenly my awareness was transported to my mother’s womb, a time when I dwelled within amniotic waters. My mother’s soul essence was communing with mine in unconditional love. Her soul was incredibly beautiful, as was mine, like two crystal clear notes of music, each unique and harmonizing perfectly together. The presence of the love was so pure

NaturalTucson.com

and so encompassing it couldn’t be contained and enveloped my heart, expanding and expanding ever more until the inner ocean of salty tears melted into oneness, joining the salt waters I was enveloped in. Waves of emotion met the consciousness of the wake of gentle waves my body floating created within the pool. Ever so gently, I was brought to the side of the pool with my back cradled at its wall. Opening my eyes, I noticed how the sunlight danced on the waters and also on the ceiling much like the spark of life of an embryo finding its way to the wall of a uterus. Remembrance of Mother and I and Soul Essence before I was born is a gift that keeps giving. I am grateful for the knowing that Souls are eternal. I am grateful for the knowing that relationships never die, they keep growing and evolving even when bodies die. I am grateful for the healing of warm salt waters. I am grateful for the woman, the therapist, who facilitated the experience. I am grateful. On a physical level, Watsu frees the spine and joints, aided by weightlessness. It encourages flexibility and range of motion. It can be likened to receiving the effects of restorative yoga. For the mind, water therapy reduces stress and cortisol, lessens resistance and fear around muscle tension, and is deeply calming. It can be likened to receiving the peaceful effects of meditation. For the spirit, Watsu can transcend time and space. Through that invitation to surrender, it is possible to receive a glimpse of eternity. In the warm salt water, a Watsu therapist’s role is: “To provide a safe, nurturing space where people can feel invited to surrender into the healing they desire, moving toward a wholeness that is always accessible from within.” Diane Dearmore, a Licensed Massage Therapist, has been practicing healing art modalities including myofascial release, craniosacral therapy and medical massage for chronic pain since 2002. She brings the whole of her experience from both her private medical massage practice and holistic spa environments into the water. Dearmore is currently offering watsu sessions at Santa Rita Springs, in central Tucson. Connect at 505-999-9870 or Diane.Dearmore@gmail.com. See ad, page 26.

our Higher Self (HS) is the part of you that is most expansive, residing in another dimension (or timeline, such as your future). It is the part of us that is free of the fetters of this earth. It lives without limiting beliefs or perceptions, in an open field of possibility. Though we are always connected with this aspect of our truest selves, we need to turn inward, away from all distractions, to listen and partake in its wisdom. It sees all of life from a higher perspective and leads us through loving choices instead of fearful ones. It is a calm voice that wants us to be free and in the flow with the natural rhythms of life, right here and now. Meditation, quiet time in nature, eating a high vibrational diet and choosing love over fear are ways to connect with this inner beauty. Our HS has so many keys to our happiness; it behooves us to spend time every day going within and setting our intention to align more fully. This part of us can reveal aspects of ourselves that we have long forgotten. This includes our innate, unique core values and what we came into this world to do. It’s a crucial relationship to forge on a spiritual path, as we turn to our own heart and sensing. Learn to trust in who you really are and transform your world through being here. Chakra clearing and spiritual healing can help you find overall balance and contentment in your life.” This kind of healing can be anything from a gentle energy balance to a full-blown session including recommendations of diet and color therapy. “I see the healing arts in very practical terms. I see myself more as a metaphysical plumber than anything else,” she says. Wolf has the ability to see the chakra system, where there are clogs and where the system needs patching, and using the tools she’s learned over the years, she aids in unclogging and patching one’s chakra system. “I do a general clearing, then we get to work on your entire system, one chakra at a time, beginning with the Root Chakra,” explains Wolf. She says if the foundation or root isn’t solid, the rest won’t be either. In fact, it’s in her name. “Healers” is Wolf ’s middle name, and it’s a family name, made up of the first letter of each of her parents, grandparents and great-grandmother’s first names. When she was 3 years old, she had a near-death experience while being the first to survive a then-rare heart surgery. After that, she had what her grandmother called healing hands. Her mother constantly told her she was overly sensitive, but she remembers her father, a mystic, telling her there was nothing wrong with her that time wouldn’t correct. When Wolf was around 15, she met a woman who saw her gift and taught her how to contain her own energy and how to move energy through a vessel either hands-on, or remotely. Wolf became reiki-attuned in 1985, the same year she discovered flotation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation therapy. She and her partners opened an alternative healing center in Tucson in 1986. After receiving a vision in 2015, Wolf opened her second Wellness Center, Cloud Nine Flotation on the East Side in her home studio.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

Six Things You Need to Know About Glyphosate AKA Roundup

G

by Anna Blessing

lyphosate is an herbicide that was developed in the 1950s and introduced in the‘70s to the U.S. Glyphosate and other organophosphates have been sprayed across crops, so all genetically modified, as well as many organic crops, have them. While this may produce a high-yield crop, there are some important things to consider with this man-made substance when it comes to our health and wellness. Glyphosate is found in Roundup, a common weed killer. It ends up in our air, water and food and can be a serious problem. Since 2015, the World Health Organization concluded that glyphosate is a carcinogen and there are no safe levels for the body. Known as a hormone hacker, it has been the lead contributor to thousands of cancer cases. So then, why is it the most widely used commercial and residential herbicide? What will it take for we the people to stop buying and supporting these agents of death? To increase awareness, there are six things we must know about glyphosate AKA Roundup. Glyphosate alters plant structure. One benefit of glyphosates in terms of production is that it speeds up plant growth. The downside of this is that it alters natural plant structure. So the alkaloids, phenolics, sugar and carbohydrate groups in the plants are not the same as if we allowed them to mature. Another thing to keep in mind is that glyphosate prevents us from absorbing certain nutrients in food. Specifically, it can stop us from absorbing folate, coenzyme Q10 and other necessary nutrients. Even eating a clean, nutritious diet, the majority of Americans are in a state of chronic malnutrition due to the abundance of glyphosate in our air, water and food.

Glyphosate mimics a crucial amino acid in the body. Glyphosate is a synthesized glycine amino acid, and doesn’t act the same in the body as the real thing. Glycine is important for muscle formation and retaining muscle mass, as well as for RNA and DNA synthesis. 28

Tucson Edition

NaturalTucson.com

A German study on glyphosate by pathobiologist Dr. Stephen Frantz, noted that when a cell is trying to form its protein in the RNA ribosomes engine, “It may grab glyphosate instead of glycine to form a damaged, misfolded protein,” which then goes on to replicate. When the high phosphate replaces glycine, the cell can’t function and can cause “unprecedented consequences.” This mimicry not only creates confusion in our bodies, but also activates massive gene mutation and errant cell proliferation, leading to serious and many times deadly diseases. Glyphosate can inhibit detoxification and enzyme production. Other studies revealed glyphosates can cause potential harm to the body. One study found that glyphosate and antibiotics inhibit the cytochrome p450 enzyme pathway, a main detoxification and conjugation pathway in the liver. It’s an essential binding chemical root in the liver, which we know is critical for detoxification. Additionally, a 2014 study conducted by Joseania Salbego found that digestive enzymes trypsin, amylase and chymotrypsin were significantly affected by glyphosate. In human biofeedback testing, the main areas glyphosate appears are in the gastrointestinal (GI) and detoxification systems, which are critical for the body’s health and well-being. If we are unable to properly eliminate and detoxify our bodies of deadly toxins, serious illnesses begin to manifest. Without the proper GI function and enzyme production, we can eat a nutritious and clean diet and still not be utilizing the nutrients we are taking in. For those with a leaky gut, the glyphosate then ends up in the blood and many times the brain. We are exposed to glyphosate from food, air and water sources. When neighbors use Roundup in their yard, the run-off runs down the drains into our yards and water supply. We then shower, drink and wash our hands in glyphosate-ridden water that filtration does not properly filter out. Many pesticides, herbicides and fungicides are sprayed in the air. Think of the butterfly effect: one butterfly flapping its wings can reach the other side of the world. This concept works for the abundance of airborne “cides” sprayed onto crops. The best way to reduce glyphosate consumption is to buy organic, preferably local food. Better yet, growing our own food without harmful substances used on commercial crops. Because glyphosate has permeated our water supply, it’s important to get a good water filter to keep water clear and free of glyphosate and other harmful substances. Ninety percent of corn, soybeans, cotton, beets, canola and sugar in the U.S. are glyphosate resistant and are constantly sprayed with glyphosate. These are our main “food” sources and are added to almost everything. Glyphosate is the real reason for gluten intolerance and wheat allergies. Wheat and gluten were not an issue until we destroyed our food supply with the use of glyphosate, genetically modifying and creating hybridization of wheat crops. Autoimmune severely gluten intolerant patients have traveled out of the U.S. and found they could eat wheat daily. And

guess what? They lost 20 pounds, had energy and were able to not only tolerate it, but feel good. In the U.S., we are poisoning our food supply with the use of glyphosate and hundreds of other deadly pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. What can we do? Building a strong microbiome is key. Our individual microbiome consists of communities of microbes within us. It’s important to keep our microbiome healthy because it really builds our emotional and energetic health. In addition to herbs, clean food and clean water, there are other things we can do to build a strong microbiome, which will help detox and withstand glyphosate, and other toxins. These are: getting out in nature; nourishing our psychobiome with proper gut/brain support; standing/walking barefoot in clean, natural areas; working on psychospiritual maturation; eating fermented foods daily; and keeping our environment clean. Biofeedback testing can help see how the body responds to glyphosate and scan for areas glyphosate is impacting, including organ stress, hormone imbalances and others that influence health. Knowing our body’s weak points and how to heal and balance them is invaluable. The body has its own language, and learning to interpret it is the difference between sickness and health. Glyphosate is not something we want to take lightly as it is a growing problem that is impacting the health of our bodies and plants. So please, for our neighbors, loved ones, the animals and our future generations, choose awareness in the weed and pest killers you use. We the people have the power, and we change the world with every choice we make.

ar has been declared on the opioid epidemic, and at long last, Americans are realizing that they’ve been overmedicated for too long. There are alternative healing options available, and the awakening is happening across the country. For many millennia, research has been taking place regarding the medicinal value and properties of plants. One of the oldest written resources for plant medicine can be found in an ancient Egyptian papyri, Ebers Papyrus, which dates back to 1550 BC and is believed to have been rewritten from an even older record. Through countless trial and error experiments, ancestors of the human race have been discov-

ering the many benefits that Mother Earth has to offer through her foliage. They’ve passed this information onto us through writings, teachings and oral histories. Many countries and cultures throughout the world still rely heavily on Earth’s bounty for healing. It’s difficult to identify exactly how, when and why some cultures continued to follow nature’s trail, while others decided to follow a concrete runway which led to manmade pharmaceuticals. Perhaps it’s how east and west differ on their view of total health. Most eastern philosophies view medicine as treating the whole person, which includes the body, mind and spirit. It is all connected through one energy, and when one element is treated, they are each treated in turn. In the west, however, there is an obvious distinction between the body, mind and spirit. It is that scientific divide that drove the evolution of how people and ailments are diagnosed and cared for. As more and more Americans are being called to fight in their own health management battle, it is vital that they

have all of the information that is available, so a well-developed plan of attack can occur. Education is key. The more people know about their medicinal options, the stronger their arsenal will be when they take a stand and command control of their whole health—mind, body and spirit. Natural Awakenings is proud to introduce the newest section of the magazine, Plant Medicine. This section will be an educational tool for our readers. Each month the section will highlight natural medicines, their history, their uses and their benefits. We will put you in contact with local businesses and practitioners that work within the belief system that nature is medicine.

Coming in October: THE CANNABIS CORNER will spotlight a specific marijuana strain, its special properties and the specific conditions it helps treat. Check back to our Plant Medicine section each month to grow your knowledge of nature’s most versatile medicines.

f you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. But what exactly is a volatile aromatic compound? In short, these compounds are small organic molecules that tend to change quickly from their solid or liquid state to a gas at room temperature. They are called volatile because they change state quickly. Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells, protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and their beautiful fragrance, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatments and health-care practices. Ease Hip Joints with Chlorophyll

W

hen joint inflammation hits, what’s the best plant medicine to bring it down? Chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves and algaes. After needing a hip replacements (or two), we’re left wondering what caused the osteoarthritis in our joints. We can cause this in our bodies through demineralization from eating disorders, overuse and misalignment. Many don’t see the effects that binge eating, bulimia and anorexia have on the teeth and hipbones. These eating disorders demineralize the body and create micronutrient deficiency. That’s where the plants come in. It’s a micronutrient issue. Super dense nutrition in the form of superfoods correct the demineralization and lack of micronutrients found in joint problems. Superfoods are super high in vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. Chlorophyll, the green pigment found in leaves and algae, is a superfood that nourishes, creates and purifies blood, detoxifies the liver and neutralizes toxins. Ann Wigmore popularized wheat grass in the 1970s. In the 1980s, we called them adaptogens—all the wonderful Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs that were super high in nutrient content. The ‘90s brought the blue-green algae from Klamath Lake, however the Koreans had been using chlorella for centuries. The algae chlorella removes toxic metals. Spirulina is another popular chlorophyll-based super food and similar to the algaes grown by the Aztecs to feed their citizens. Some favorites over the years are detox baths with seaweed, wheat and barley grass, moringa, cilantro, dandelion and raw juicing of greens like kale, spinach and celery. The key activity with joints is to bring down the inflammation. The anti-inflammatory chlorophyll-based superfoods do this. They create the building blocks of fine bones. Sheila Shea is the director of the Intestinal Health Institute, whose goal is the healing of the gastrointestinal system using natural methods. Through colon hydrotherapy, real food nutrition and detoxification, the Intestinal Health Institute works to bring the gut back online. Shea has practiced colon hydrotherapy for 41 years and is a subject matter expert on sugar and metabolic syndrome. Herb Spotlight: Curcumin Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in the spice turmeric. The two words are sometimes used interchangeably, but the technical difference between the two is that turmeric is the yellowish powder used to flavor foods, while curcumin is a chemical contained within turmeric. In the U.S., turmeric is best known as a spice. It’s one of the main components of curry powder. In India and other parts of Asia, turmeric is used to treat many health conditions. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and perhaps even anti-cancer properties.

Fire Tonic

Cannabis for Joint Pain

H

ow valuable would a tonic that is loaded with antioxidants and amino acids be? What if a spoonful a day could have positive effects on our health? This little all-natural, food-based tonic could help with heart disease, increased weight loss, pain relief, boosting the immune system, fighting cancer, decreasing inflammation and more. Such a formula exists: Fire Tonic. It was made by Debbie Shaw, the owner of Alternatives in Health Care Detox Therapy Spa, as a “cold buster” and “de-bugger.” It was originally made to help people get through cold and flu season, by taking it when they felt “a little off ” or started feeling sick. The original dose was to take one-half eyedropper full in a small amount of water 1-2 times daily, as soon as one felt symptomatic. Those who were already sick could take it 4-5 times daily. As more information about spicy food benefits became readily available and the unbelievable benefits were there for everyone to see, Shaw also realized that a daily dose could help prevent a myriad of other health issues. This tonic works as an antibacterial, anti-fungal agent, therefore helping fight bacterial and fungal infections. A small dose could help with digestive and blood sugar issues while helping to reduce cholesterol levels. It can also help with lowering blood pressure, improving bone density and reducing risk for diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or dementia. The basic recipe is a combination of organic herbal ingredients—fresh habanero peppers, elephant garlic bulbs, white onions, horseradish root, yellow ginger root and turmeric root—crushed and placed in mason jars in raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. It is then placed in a dark area for months to years at a time, and shaken daily. When it is ready to be bottled, it is triple filtered and hand poured. Shaw says, “The ingredients are readily available. It’s the steeping time that makes this formula out of some people’s scope and their time frame.” This little powerhouse is available at her spa. Alternatives in Health Care Detox Therapy Spa has many different holistic and detoxifying products and procedures. It is located at 1101 N. Wilmot Rd., Ste. #227, Tucson. Connect at 520-275-4510. M

illions of people suffer from joint pain and subsequent inflammation, either resulting from injury or a condition like arthritis. Cannabis offers relief by reducing inflammation in the joints and dampening down the signal of pain traveling to the brain. The body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), responsible for helping the body regulate itself, contains CB2 receptors which, when activated, have been shown to significantly reduce inflammation. Joint tissue has been discovered to contain the highest amount of CB2 receptors of any type of tissue in the ECS. Relief is most effective when the cannabis is applied topically, directly on the joint. Topical application is most successful in reducing and even stopping localized pain. Another beneficial factor to using cannabis topically is that it is non-psychoactive, so it can be applied any time throughout the day as needed without feeling the intoxicating “high” that some do not desire. In addition to topical application, cannabis contains two chemical compounds that work to fight joint pain in slightly different ways when ingested: CBD and THCa. CBD works on the actual pain receptor, regulating and dampening the firing of pain signals, while the THCa works to reduce the inflammation. Both compounds are also non-psychoactive and can be found in high amounts in raw cannabis, either juiced from the leaves or crushed up bud filling capsules. When utilizing the cannabis plant topically and internally, the two become nature’s powerhouse for relieving joint pain and its ensuing inflammation from which many of us suffer. s it possible to receive 10 to 20 years of therapy in an afternoon? Also known as “The Vine of the Soul,” Ayahuasca is an indigenous brew that has been making its way into the Western world for quite some time. It is an ancient and medicinal healing plant that originates and grows in the Amazonian regions of South America. Some participants report Ayahuasca as having major benefits reducing symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety and addiction. This particular plant is also a decoction that may be Danielle McFarlin & Jewels Foster useful in the treatment of some types of cancer. Ayahuasca is a master teacher and has an innate ability to bring our blind spots or our shadows to the surface to consciously be acknowledged through self-compassion and forgiveness. Many participants report that a deep sense of inner gratitude tends to follow each drink session. Undeniably, the Madre works with us to give us exactly what we need during and after the time we sit with her. Those who receive optimal benefits from using Ayahuasca typically have clarity in regards to their healing needs, as well as a deep desire to go within to find their own answers. Preparation is highly recommended before sitting with the indigenous brew. Meditation, yoga, connecting with nature and inner child work are just a few ways in which we can prepare for our experience. The integration process takes place after the experience. Integration is the process of taking what we’ve learned while applying it to our lives in caring, self-loving ways to become the best that we can be. Nature’s Remedies How Animals Self-Medicate by Sandra Murphy

Every species embodies a solution to some environmental challenge, and some of these solutions are breathtaking in their elegance. ~Linda Bender, Animal Wisdom: Learning from the Spiritual Lives of Animals

F

rom birds and elephants to dolphins, animals, whether by instinct or learned behavior, have discovered ways to cope with parasites, pests, aches and pains. This science of self-medication is called zoopharmacognosy (zoo for animal, pharma for drug and cognosy for knowing). At home, a dog or cat that eats grass is practicing it to eliminate parasites or hairballs. as a supplement. First thought to help remove toxins from their bodies, clay adds needed sodium to their diet, researchers now believe. A pregnant elephant in Kenya’s Tsavo Park was observed by ecologist Holly Dublin, Ph.D., to travel miles to find a tree not normally eaten. Four days later, the elephant gave birth. Dublin discovered that Kenyan women make a drink from the same leaves and bark to induce labor. While studying Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in the Sabangau peat swamp forest in Central Kalimantan,

Indonesia, primatologist Helen MorroghBernard, Ph.D., of the University of Exeter, UK, observed an orangutan chew the leaves of a plant that were not part of its usual diet until it formed a lather. The orangutan spit out the leaves and used the lather much like humans apply a topical pain reliever. While animals have been known to eat certain plants when ill, hers may be the first sighting of an animal creating a salve. Nearby villagers grind the leaves to make a balm for sore muscles and inflammation. Morrogh-Bernard believes humans learned this topical application from apes and passed it down through the generations. In the Red Sea, bottlenose dolphins rub against bush-like gorgonian corals covered by an outer layer of antimicrobial mucus that may protect them from infection, according to dolphin researcher Angela Ziltener, of the University of Zürich, Switzerland. “It’s amazing how much we’ve learned, but forgotten,” says Ira Pastor, CEO at Bioquark Inc., in Philadelphia, a life sciences company developing biologic products to regenerate and repair human organs and tissues. “We live with other organisms which from a health and wellness perspective are much further advanced than humans. No other species tries to cure with any single solution. Nature employs multiple options. We’re not appropriately imitating nature yet. We need to do more.” Cindy Engel, Ph.D., of Suffolk, England, author of Wild Health: Lessons in Natural Wellness from the Animal Kingdom, says, “Animals rely on plants to provide them with the essentials of life, making their health intimately dependent on plant chemistry to provide everything they need to grow, repair damage and reproduce.” She continues, “Wild animals carry diseases that affect livestock and humans. It’s sensible to explore why they’re successful in fending off the worst effects in order to find ways to improve our own health, instead of just trying to eradicate the disease. We feel the answers for the future will be found in the past, not in chemical factories. ~Ira Pastor self-help strategies animals employ.” Accomplishing this is more difficult than ever, she believes, because today’s severely shrinking habitat makes it hard to find truly wild animals and plants. “Over the last 100 years, we’ve done a horrible disservice to all life by destroying habitat and exploring only a small percentage of what nature has to offer,” agrees Pastor. “As patents expire, pharma has to change. It’s important to develop botanicals. We’re advised to vary our diet and exercise, yet take the same dose of the same pill daily. We’ve studied dead organisms under microscopes, but living organisms, even as small as microbes, can communicate helpful positive reactions.” Western medicine has strayed from what nature offers to keep us healthy. Now is the time to take care of both the planet and all living beings on it. “We’ve discarded thousands of years of evidence,” says Pastor. “We cannot destroy the bounty of possibilities.” Connect with freelance writer Sandra Murphy at StLouisFreelanceWriter@mindspring.com.

ical wellness, combined with emotionally deflating visions of the very last smoke, the last sip of coffee, and the last bite of carrot cake, is enough to stagger even the most resolute. The myriad of straight jacketed choices overwhelms, causing us to freeze like a human in an alien spaceship’s light beam.

The more sand that has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it. ~Jean Paul

Fortunately, the cultivation and habituated application of more sustaining and nourishing choices need not be baffling or arduous. We can slip nurturing choices into our lives as easily as a hand parts curtain panels. Our Spirits are remarkably intuitive; able to discern the slightest ripples of change in our preferences. Holding a mood sympathetic to our own natural process of transformation for both our inner and outer worlds, serves to alleviate brain freeze, allowing us to intuit the most enlivening choices for our individual life visions. Vitality ebbs when we resign to following other people’s well-intentioned but counterintuitive choices for us. Springfield Coaching’s wellness and nutrition programs are purposefully designed without the didactic tedium
