A

s a child, I loved watching birds—and drawing birds—birds flying, birds eating worms, birds perched in a tree. Over and over and over, I drew birds. I also drew on my Raggedy Ann doll. Oh, how I loved her and Andy. I loved them more than any other dolls and at least equally as much my pet buddies—about a dozen hamsters. I love to think of those times when art and play were one, and it wasn’t judged or evaluated or scheduled. I miss that free, open time to just be and create. Like many, for the most part I stopped drawing and creating just for fun as I got older. I began to compare my work to others’ and received a grade in school on my art. These days, I try to schedule art and play, but often struggle with settling down, switching gears and just allowing the creative process to unfold. It’s a shame that our industrial society seems to place such a low value on creativity, as if it doesn’t have equal value with making utilitarian, commercial products. But that’s a misguided notion. After all, every product ever made was once just a blueprint, just a sketch, just an idea. Somebody had to create it. We tend to classify art as a luxury, a leisure activity, but in truth, it is the wellspring of all thought, all deed, all cultures, all civilization. You can read about a few of its many facets right here in these pages, so why not begin now? In this same vein, we’re thrilled to partner with the Bridge Eco-Village to launch the first Natural Awakenings Fall Harvest Festival to be held on October 22 and 23. We’re planning on letting down our hair and having some real fun while learning options for living more and more in harmony with the Earth, our neighbors and fellow human beings. See you on the 22nd!

newsbriefs Zen Shiatsu Revitalizes Body/Mind Health

D

avid A. Frank, OMT, MA, practices advanced acupressure and Zen Shiatsu to support patients’ safe return to healthy system and organ function. Frank’s 38 years of study and clinical practice (30 in Japan) bring deep understanding to the profoundly effective techniques of medical acupressure. Oriental Medical Therapy (OMT) uses gravity and support in a Zen mind state. This allows the patient’s nervous system and acupuncture meridians to not resist; no invasion is sensed. In this way, no pain or resistance occurs, so the bodymind loses fear of trauma release. Healthy rebalancing persists for weeks or months following treatment. Support over the entire spectrum of acupuncture points assures attention to every detail of a patient’s physical and mental health. Frank offers home visits and is on call at Willow’s Water Works, in Tucson. For more information call 520-270-8464, email FrankDavida13@yahoo.com. Or visit OrientalMedicalTherapy.com.

Organic Gift Baskets and More to Order Online

T

he Premium Organic Café has launched an online store with a unique offering of specialty organic coffees, chocolates, teas and accessories. The company features gift baskets, a monthly ordering club and a gift scheduling/preordering system for individuals and small to medium-sized companies. They sell specialty organic coffees, teas, chocolates, gift baskets and accessories. The business is owned by managing partners Lisa Ballehr, a marketing executive, and Kimberly Ring, an orthopedic radiologist. Featured services include the Monthly Connoisseur Club–a preordering service; the Healthy Business Program–a wellness initiative for businesses to provide employees organic coffee and tea; and the Never Forget Gift Service, where consumers can pre-order gifts for family and friends years in advance and businesses can do the same for clients/employees. Ring says, “We’re focusing on organic and Fair Trade certified products because our research indicated that coffee, tea and chocolate production is highly susceptible to unfairness, child slavery and environmental mismanagement. Organic products are healthier and the Fair Trade designation means a fair price is paid to the small family farmer, women are paid the same as men, there’s no child slavery involved, and sustainability of community and the environment is the standard practice. This is something we can put our hearts behind.” For more information call 520-870-5348 or 855-674-2233 or visit PremiumOrganicCafe.com.

r. Mark McMahon has refined a dramatic new modality using the sound of his voice to determine the resonant frequency of a person’s body. The frequency is then used to allow the subject to release unwanted aches and pains, as well as mental or emotional blocks. Another aspect of the process is the opening and expansion of desired feeling states. “That’s the fun part for me.” says McMahon. “Often, the blocks just dissolve on their own when the higher frequency feeling states are opened.” The process can be done one-on-one or in a group setting, where a lively dynamic is experienced from the combination of frequencies and participants learn to use their own voice to accomplish results at home. Live events are scheduled on September 16, at New Moon Haven, September 17, at Spirits Child, September 24, at 4th Avenue Yoga and September 25, at Unity of Tucson. A Hotter U Introduces El Tigre/Tigress Scented Pheromones

D

ebbie Shaw, owner of Tucson-based A Hotter U, states, “Throughout our lives, our bodies produce different chemicals and hormones that have very specific jobs. Many of these fade or diminish as we age, leaving us feeling and acting differently than we did when we were younger. Just as in the animal kingdom, humans produce natural chemical scents that attract the opposite sex, called pheromones.” Pheromones fall into two categories: sexual and social. El Tigre/Tigress formulations contain both sexual and social pheromones. Sexual pheromones are fairly obvious. They are your subliminal attraction factor; your natural ability to attract and draw the attention of people around you without trying. Social pheromones help with the social aspect of sex and relationships. These natural chemicals help to give you confidence, relieve shyness and make you seem more approachable and easier to get along with, easier to talk to and more believable. Many professionals including executives, salespeople, counselors, physicians, attorneys and others are using pheromones to subconsciously build rapport with the people they are dealing with. A Hotter U has also introduced a new line of all-natural tattoo aftercare products, including Skin-Ease and an antibacterial “tatt” cleanse concentrate, both made with no petroleum ingredients, no water, no preservatives or any other chemicals. Children at Risk for Eating Disorders

T

he obesity rate among youngsters has nearly tripled during the last three decades and given rise to another worrisome trend: Children as young as 10 are making themselves vomit in order to lose weight, reports a new Taiwanese study of 15,716 school pupils, published online by the Journal of Clinical Nursing. Thirteen percent of the girls and boys that took part in the Asian research admitted they made themselves sick to lose weight. Unfortunately, studies in the United States show similar trends. According to The Eating Disorder Foundation, 46 percent of 10-yearold girls are dieting, have a fear of fatness or are binge eating, and 27 percent of girls ages 12 through 18 show significant eating disorder symptoms. Such findings have prompted researchers to warn that self-induced vomiting is an early sign that children could develop eating disorders and serious psychological problems. The researchers believe that eating disorders can be successfully tackled by ensuring that children get enough sleep, eat breakfast every day and consume less fried food and fewer nighttime snacks. They also recommend spending less time in front of a computer screen. Source: Wiley-Blackwell

Tai Chi Can Turn Depression Around

A

recent study published in the online edition of The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry reveals that more than 2 million people age 65 and older suffer from depression, including 50 percent of nursing home residents. In seeking an alternative to aggressive drug treatments, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), turned to a gentle, westernized version of Tai chi, a 2,000-year-old Chinese martial art. During the study, 112 adults age 60 or older that had been diagnosed with major depression were treated with a standard antidepressant drug for four weeks. The 73 adults that showed only partial improvement continued to receive the medication, but were also assigned to 10 weeks of either Tai chi or health education classes. The group practicing Tai chi experienced greater improvement in their levels of depression, as well as an enhanced quality of life, better cognition and more overall energy than the non-practicing group. Dr. Helen Lavretsky, the study’s first author and a UCLA professor-inresidence of psychiatry, says, “This study shows that adding a mind-body exercise like Tai chi, that is widely available in the community, can improve the outcomes of treating depression in older adults that may also have other, coexisting medical conditions or cognitive impairment. With Tai chi, we may be able to treat these conditions without exposing them to additional medications.”

Exercise Pinches Salt’s Effects

S

alt in the diet becomes less of a concern for individuals that are physically active, according to a presentation at this year’s American Heart Association conference sessions on nutrition, physical activity and metabolism, and cardiovascular disease epidemiology and prevention. The scientists behind the study concluded that the more active people are, the less their blood pressure rises in response to the amount of salt in their food. Study participants comprised 1,906 Han Chinese adults (average age, 38) in the Genetic Epidemiology Network of Salt Sensitivity project, designed to identify genetic and environmental factors contributing to salt sensitivity.

T

hermal imaging is not solely a screening tool for breast imaging; it can be used to help assess chronic pain in the body. Digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) is a completely non-invasive clinical procedure for detecting and monitoring a number of disease and physical injuries that works by showing the thermal abnormalities present in the body. The use of this technology can make additional findings that direct patients toward the most effective treatments. The procedure can help rule in or discover suspected causes of pain, allowing for more complete healing, and often lead patients away from more invasive measures. Ultrasound, X-Ray, CT (CAT scan) and MRI are all tests of anatomy that measure the structures of your body, but thermography is unique in its capability to show physiological (functional) changes and metabolic processes in real time. DITI is a cost-effective method available for visualizing pain, monitoring healing and pathology. It is risk-free and useful as an adjunctive tool. See images below: Subject chose therapy (myofascial release) over bilateral hip replacement after thermal reports detected no inflammation in hip region, but did determine lumbar radiculopathy (nerve impingement) as probable cause for limp/pain. Subject now walks limp and pain free with no cane/crutch. Images show inflammation in lumbar region before treatment and reduction in inflammation after treatment that collaborates with improvement in gait and decrease in pain.

amuel Breidenbach is turning his vision of a sustainable eco-village into a reality and sharing it with the public this October with a Natural Awakenings-partnered Fall Festival. Breidenbach had experienced nothing but success in his life, as he careened through many different careers and made a name for himself in diverse realms. Even with an abundance of monetary possessions and earnest investments, something was missing from his life, and in this unique story, it took dying and coming back to life for him to discover exactly what that was. Sometimes, crisis is exactly what we need to initiate change in our lives, and for Breidenbach, crisis came in the form of a brain tumor. After losing everything he held dear, he departed to South America to visit a friend and ultimately, find a beautiful place to die. “The brain tumor is the best thing that’s happened to me believe, it or not. I went through Western medical science and they couldn’t do anything for me. I went broke paying for all of

I literally died. My heart stopped for eight minutes and I went over to the other side. I discovered that if I went back to where I was before, I would die because my soul wasn’t happy with what I was doing. I had to do something different. I was told that if I went back and made the changes I was supposed to, I could help a lot of people,” he says. “When I recovered, my tumor was gone,” says Breidenbach. “So I came back and I closed the businesses

that I was running and stopped everything I was doing and took a couple of years to figure out my next plan. I kept having visions of starting a community or a school, or something of that nature. I was a real estate broker and I’ve always been green, so it all came together after that.” The product of Breidenbach’s life-changing experience manifested itself in the concept of Tucson Tortolita Eco-Village (TTEV). The idea is simple in execution, but profound in result, as his dream of melding community with sustainable lifestyle could turn out to be the wave of the future. Utilizing green techniques such as permaculture, harvesting sustainable energy, using aquaculture and hydroponics, building natural green houses and maintaining communal agriculture, TTEV is soon to become a collective that embraces the people around it and lives off the land that is surrounds it. “An eco-village is a community where everything matters–the land, the people, the animals, the environment, the habitat, the type of materials–

everything is energy. The eco-village is designed to constantly evolve itself and grow in every way possible, while keeping the central focus on the community itself,” says Breidenbach. “I found in my research that green communities in Arizona are great, but they’re very expensive. You have to have a lot of money to be able to live in a community like that. That is why I want to make it my goal to make this community affordable, so that the average family here in Tucson can move there for the same price that the average non-green home would be.” The site of the eco-village is located on a beautiful plot on the west side of town, just miles from I-19 and Ajo Road. While the plans and progress of the community are still under development, Breidenbach’s vision for the land is constantly expanding with every exploration of the property he makes. “The land we have is just beyond beautiful. It even has what I call an enchanted forest on the property that in actuality is a Southwest Desert Bosque.

The trees are so tall and the plants are so thick I couldn’t even walk through it. I needed a machete just to look around inside. It is at least a couple acres in size. I would love to put a sweat lodge out there or make an area for ceremonies,” says Breidenbach. “There is also an area for a lake on the property, where construction crews dug up the land to make the highway. They took a lot of dirt and it is just a hole in the ground, but when it rains, it fills up a few feet deep and is a couple acres in diameter. I want to turn this into a lakeside environmental activity park. If we contour the borders of the lake out, it would be able to hold in 50,000 or so gallons of water. We would fill it with fish and foliage that would sustain the environment of it. There’s just so much potential out there,” he says. To stick with his model of “beyond sustainability,” Breidenbach is utilizing natural ways to construct the houses and structures on the property. Just as many eco-friendly techniques have ancient roots, the practice of making cob houses dates back to the 11th century. Breidenbach continues, “One of the techniques for building the houses that we are looking at are made with clay, water and straw to form a substance called cob. This is a cheap and simple to make structures, and they are used all over the world. They make 10-story buildings out of these in Yemen and some of them stay up for hundreds of years. They’re rounded and they fit in with their surroundings. We have all of the materials out on the property to make these houses, so it would be a fast and natural process to do so.” To promote the community and give Tucsonans a look at the land and the plans for eco-village, Breidenbach has teamed up with Holly Baker, publisher of Natural Awakenings, to create a Fall Festival on the property that will be taking place on October 22 and 23. “We’re calling it the Natural Awakenings Tucson Sustainable Fall Festival and Farmers’ Market. I tried to come up with an acronym for that, but haven’t had much luck,” says

Breidenbach. “Instead of just having a fall festival where you drink cider and pick pumpkins, we wanted to have a gathering that promotes sustainability. We’re bringing in several speakers on topics like growing food in the desert and internal ecology. We’re going to have activities and items from the Tyrannosaurus Rex museum and an area where kids can dig for fossils and take them home for free. We’ll have people selling locally grown food and drinks. We’ll have classes on water harvesting, permaculture, sustainable food and much more. It will really be a great time for everyone.” Aside from the festival, October is a significant month for Breidenbach, as it is also the month that he is closing on the property for the village. “We should have the property closed on in October, right around the time of the festival. And from that point on, all of the legal stuff will fall into place. We may start taking reservations at the Festival for people who want to join the community. I expect that we will start selling plots in October. We will be breaking ground sometime at the beginning of next year.” With an almost unbelievable life already behind him and a dream coming to fruition not far ahead of him, Breidenbach utilizes the knowledge he has gained and preservers on his path with wild determination and a jovial outlook that keeps his purpose in perspective. He states, “I learned when I died that this life really is really just a game. It’s about figuring out the rules–which ones you’re going to accept, which ones you’re going to break and so on, and then you go out and build a team around you and you play. You go after your dreams passionately, and if they fail, you put in another quarter and start over again. I look at every day as another chance and that keeps life amazing and inspiring. We are so lucky to be alive and playing this game.”

Exploring

Ancestral Connections Coyote Healing Center Workshop by David C. Rupley

e all come from families. Our experiences with families differ widely, at times wildly, but there is no doubt as to their power to shape our individual psyche. A technique known as Family Constellation provides us a new lens with which to observe intergenerational dynamics that frequently shape the course of our lives. Popular in Europe, Latin America and more recently China, Family Constellation is not well known in the U.S. Some speculate that the greater interest and acceptance elsewhere is related to a higher value being placed on families and ancestors.

Also known as Systemic Constellation, this is a process for understanding multigenerational connections within families. It is not identified as therapy. although it can have deeply beneficial effects for participants. Family Constellation can practiced in group settings or one-onone. The process begins in a group setting, and with an individual identifying a particular issue they wish to explore. This might be an illness, a dynamic in relationships or a pattern that has repeated in their life. The facilitator asks a few questions to focus the issue and learn something of the individual’s family—parents, siblings,

grandparents, aunts and uncles. It is important to note early deaths, unusual fates and previous relationships. The facilitator then directs the issue holder to choose representatives from the group and position them with respect to each other according to what feels correct. The representatives are instructed to notice changes in their physical perceptions and bodily sensations. After some time, their responses are observed and solicited by the facilitator. As the process unfolds, representatives may move or be requested to

move, other representatives may be added, and sentences may be offered by the facilitator to be spoken between representatives. It should be noted that the representatives do not have much, if any, information about those whom they represent. It is uncanny how accurately the perceptions and responses reflect the represented. Over the last 20-plus years, several patterns to these interactions have been observed. These have to do with how love and energy flow within families, as well as the importance of inclusion and the impact of exclusion. Patterns occur

between generations that promote love and the flow of energy, but there are patterns and events that disrupt the flow, as well. The early deaths of a parent or sibling are examples of potential disruptions. One way to describe what is typically experienced is a profound sense of connection. Previously unknown or unappreciated dynamics are revealed, and with their observation changes unfold in the representatives and within the felt dynamics between representatives. One surprising aspect of this process is that the benefits are not just experienced by the issue holder. There are many stories of insights and shifts for those who participate, whether as representatives or as observers. It may be less surprising that family members who are not present frequently experience shifts, as well. It is far from clear how this process works. How representatives appear to have access to information that is not provided to them is not known. How information not known to the issue holder can be available to the representatives is not understood. Yet these are common experiences in this process and make it a powerful tool for exploration of issues that have defied other therapeutic techniques. This is highly experiential in the group format. It is not necessary to have any family members present in the group. The experience provides a new perspective on being a member of a family. That it has spread so far in such a short period of time is some evidence of the healing power it offers. A workshop, Revealing the Mysteries of Family Disconnections, will be held October 22 and 23, at Coyote Healing Center. Location: 700 N Country Club Road, Suite 110, 85716. David C. Rupley, Jr., MD(H) is licensed by the Arizona State Board of Homeopathic and Integrated Medicine Examiners and has facilitated Systemic Family Constellations for five years. Eco-Fashionista Summer Rayne Oakes Models the Future by Kristin J. Bender

Fashion model Summer Rayne Oakes has created a growing platform for taking eco-fashion mainstream. She’s seen firsthand how a more sustainable lifestyle can start with something as simple as choosing certified organic lip balm or a pair of shoes made from organic cotton and recycled rubber.

B

ecause of her close ties to environmental causes, Oakes is known as “The eco-model.” The title seems to fit her well: She has put her name behind many cause-related programs, including a skincare company that uses active natural ingredients and a maker of recycled eyewear that plants a tree for every pair of frames sold. She didn’t set out to be the ecofashionista. Oakes, whose first name derived from being born, she states, on a “rainy summer day,” was raised amid Pennsylvania farmlands north of Scranton and developed a love of nature from an early age. By 13, she was the youngest member of her

hometown’s environmental advisory council and after high school, went off to Cornell University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resources and entomology. While researching toxins in sewage sludge and identifying aquatic insects, the 5-foot, 10inch, willowy brunette also began modeling while at college, and conceived the idea that the fashion industry might be the right forum for her to take a leading role in expanding environmental awareness. Her first venture, Organic Portraits, an avant-garde photography project, brought to life sustainable design and conservation in one package.

green and clean marketplace is apt. Global retail sales of organic cotton apparel and home textile products reached an estimated $4.3 billion in 2009, up 35 percent over the year before, according to the latest research from Organic Exchange’s Organic Cotton Market Report, and the market is expected to continue to grow. Organic Exchange projected a 20 to 40 percent jump in both 2010 and 2011, which could result in a $6 billion market this year. Oakes supports the industry via Source4Style.com, a forum she recently co-founded to connect designers with sustainable material suppliers from around the world. A finalist for the prestigious Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards, it already has been frequented by the likes of fashion designer Christian Siriano. Oakes is not alone—other celebrities and designers like Bono, Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood have added their voices in raising awareness of the importance of socially and environmentally conscious fashion. Oakes has modeled for such industry giants as Levi Strauss, Payless, Replay Jeans and others, but her activism and modeling have also allowed her to branch out into other industries. She says that her bestselling book, Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty, is aimed at, “... women that love style, but may not have ‘environment’ in their lexicon,” and serves as, “an irreverent, witty guide for green virgins.” “Sustainable design will continue to evolve,” she says. “Ten years ago, there were only a handful of designers operating in the industry. Now, most companies are asking how it can be authentically built into the core of their business.” How will that happen? “First, they have to believe and embody it.”

Armed with brains, beauty and an affinity with the natural world, Oakes signed with her first modeling agency after graduating. Today, at 27, she has built her own brand as a business consultant and spokeswoman, author and entrepreneur in the multibillion-dollar industry of environmentally friendly apparel and home products. Oakes says that being in nature is what makes her come to life. “I carry that with me through all of my work in the fashion industry. It keeps me incredibly grounded and gives me an opportunity to work with companies and organizations that mirror my values or operate in the spirit of becoming better stewards,” she says. Oakes is as appealing as the products she represents. In addition to her creative input, she has put her stamp of approval on both Portico Home + Spa linens and bath products and Payless ShoeSource’s zoe&zac line of shoes and handbags. Oakes also is working with Modo on a collection of recycled eyewear under its Eco brand, which she notes will be tied in with some of her personal reforestation and sustainable design projects worldwide. Her work with Aveeno on its Be An Active Natural Campaign supports the message that small changes can add up to a big difference. She sometimes blogs about her experiences at SummerRayne.net; a recent post explained how she chooses which Earth-friendly companies she’ll support. “An engaging partnership is a critical component for me to [be] a spokesperson,” she writes. “On countless occasions, I have had to turn down offers if the partnership didn’t seem suitable. But how exciting it is to find brands that are ready to step up to the challenge and have the spirit, resources and energy to make meaningful change happen from the inside out.” Oakes’ timing in applying her passions and skills to the

nnovation is shaping every facet of the eco-fashion industry—from organic crop standards, energy-efficient production, local sourcing, community reinvesting and fair trade, to the recycling of excess fabric and other materials and repurposing used garments. Yet, half of all textile fibers still come from conventional cotton, which soaks up a quarter of all agrochemicals and insecticides sprayed on the planet, reports Paul Hawken in Natural Capitalism – Creating the Next Industrial Revolution. Cotton also requires 2,600 gallons of water for every pound grown. Other natural fabric plant fibers are much less resource-intensive. Here are some clues about what to look for. BAMBOO: This versatile and self-replenishing grass yields a luxuriously soft fabric. HEMP: A somewhat coarser plant, hemp is best when blended with other fibers, like cotton and silk. JUSI and PIÑA: Jusi comes from banana silk. Piña is made from pineapple leaves. Both textiles originated in the Philippines. KENAF: From hibiscus grown in Asia and Africa, kenaf blends well with other fibers. It feels similar to hemp or jute. LINEN: A classic material derived from the flax plant, linen won’t stick to skin and dries quickly. LYOCELL: Includes a range of soft fabrics comprised of cellulose fibers, but is still subjected to chemical processing such as bleaching. It has cotton-like characteristics. Also known as Tencel, seacell (using seaweed) or modal (from beechwood pulp). ORGANIC COTTON: U.S. organic cotton planting was up 12 percent in 2010 over 2009, from 10,521 to 11,827 acres, according to the Organic Trade Association. Farmers project an increase of 1,513 acres over the next five years, depending on demand. RAMIE: Made from a flowering, woody plant in the nettle family, the fibrous texture feels softest when blended with organic cotton or wool. It has linen-like characteristics, such as durability. RECYCLED POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE (PET): Gives new purpose to used plastic bottles or old polyester clothing. Appears in fleece-like fabrics and is also reincarnated in the soles of shoes. SILK: Silk delivers elegant effects when used alone or combined with other fibers. This durable protein fiber is obtained from the cocoons of silkworms, harvested before the caterpillar metamorphoses into a moth. Wild silk, or peace silk, waits for the silkworm to emerge alive. alk through the gluten-free product aisles at the grocery or health food store and many people might wonder: “Is this a food fad? Who has a problem with gluten?” As it turns out, more people have gluten sensitivity than scientists, physicians and researchers previously thought. A study at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Celiac Research estimates that 6 percent of the U.S. population, or more than 18 million individuals, have some sensitivity to gluten, a protein found in wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, malts and triticale. Research published online by BMC Medicine and CeliacCenter.org this year provides the first scientific evidence of what many people allergic to gluten already know: While gluten sensitivity presents less serious negative health effects than celiac disease, its host of symptoms can become problematic. An earlier study in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics concluded that for dealing with both wheat allergies and celiac disease, the dietary avoidance of gluten-containing grains is the only effective treatment.

Case in Point

Carol Mahaffey, a tax attorney in Columbus, Ohio, was experiencing intermittent joint pain and what she calls “living in a fog,” in the summer of 2009. Because she had read that joint pain can sometimes be caused by gluten sensitivity, she decided to eliminate gluten from her diet.

Gluten: Trust Your Gut Scientists Confirm Widespread Sensitivity by Claire O’Neil

Although her new regimen didn’t relieve the joint pain—she was later professionally diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis—she found that after four to five weeks, she looked and felt better overall. “I was losing weight, my digestive system was better and I found it easier to mentally focus. Somebody at work also happened to mention that I didn’t sniffle anymore,” she relates. Although Mahaffey’s blood tests were negative for celiac disease, she had all the signs that she is glutensensitive. “Imagine degrees of gluten ingestion along a spectrum,” says Dr. Alessio Fasano, a professor of pediatrics, medicine and physiology and director of the Center for Celiac Research. “At one end, you have people with celiac disease, who cannot tolerate one crumb of gluten in their diet. At the other, you have the lucky people who can eat pizza, beer, pasta and cookies—with no ill effects whatsoever. In the middle, there is this murky area of those with gluten

reactions, including gluten sensitivity,” says Fasano, who led the new study. “This is where we are looking for answers on how to best diagnose and treat this recently identified group of gluten-sensitive individuals.” Until more definitive answers come to light, those who suspect they might have an issue with gluten can try going gluten-free for a period of time, like Mahaffey. “I had to become a label reader,” she advises, “because even things like bottled soy sauce can contain gluten.” She buys baked goods at a local gluten-free bakery, still enjoys wine with gluten-free snacks, uses gluten-free dough to make her own pizza at home, and has become a fan of risotto. For people that travel on a similar path, the feel-good benefits of a gluten-free diet can more than make up for some of the inconveniences. “You just make it work,” says Mahaffey. On a recent get-together with longtime college friends at a chalet in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Mahaffey brought her own snacks and breakfast foods, asked questions about the menu when they went out to dinner, and ended up having a great, gluten-free time. hether you have bid gluten good-bye out of allergic necessity or voluntary choice, Tucson won’t let you go hungry. The Old Pueblo boasts a bevy of gluten-free-friendly eateries, stores and vendors. One of the first places to start your local gluten-free quest is online at GlutenFreeTucson.com. The site provides a clearinghouse of glutenfree resources, including links to restaurants, events, shopping venues and other information relevant to gluten-free living. “It all started when I found out a friend of mine was gluten-intolerant,” says founder Sherif Morgan, Ph.D. “I was intrigued to learn that she had to completely eliminate gluten from her diet. After talking more to her, I felt there was a need for a comprehensive resource that lists restaurants and shops in Tucson that offer gluten-free options, which inspired me to start GlutenFreeTucson.com.” Morgan launched the website in June 2009. He continuously updates resource lists as more gluten-free options become available around town. “I think it’s fantastic that there is an increasing awareness among restaurant owners and chefs to accommodate special diets, including gluten-free,” Morgan says. He invites restaurant owners and chefs wishing to offer gluten-free menu options to contact Gluten Free Tucson via the website. “We will connect you with the right people to help you get started.” Like Morgan, Tucson caterers Susan Fulton and Mary Gibson became interested in gluten-free cooking after encountering a gluten-free customer. “We were intrigued and challenged by the possibilities of gluten-free baking, and began experimenting with different flours,” Fulton recalls. A year-and-ahalf later, they’ve got a catchy business name—Gourmet Girls Go Gluten Free—and plenty of delicious glutenfree products (think sweet breads, bagels, baguettes, muffins, cookies and cakes) to delight a devoted following at local Farmer’s Markets. Living the Good (Gluten-Free!)

Life in Tucson by Catharine Sutherland

“We often explain to people that gluten-free products can taste a little bit different because we are all so used to the taste of wheat in everything we eat. Alternatives such as rice, millet, sorghum and bean flours do have a subtle flavor of their own,” Fulton says. “Our official taster is my husband, who is not gluten-free and who loves baked treats. When he gives it a thumbs-up, we know we have successfully recreated the original.” While many restaurants and bakeries in town now offer gluten-free selections, Gourmet Girls Go Gluten Free will open Tucson’s only completely glutenfree bakery and bistro at 5845 North Oracle Road, in October. Boost in Mood

YOGA FOR HEALTH by Meredith Montgomery

E

very September, National Yoga Month (YogaMonth.org) expands awareness of yoga’s proven health benefits. This 5,000-year-old practice that originated in the East and aims to unify body, mind and spirit, continues to gain popularity in the West as a valuable tool in preventive healthcare and a complement to traditional medicine. These are just some examples of the multiple health benefits a regular yoga practice can provide.

Improved Balance, Flexibility and Range of Motion

Having the balance to stand on one foot and being flexible enough to touch your toes are often falsely perceived as prerequisites for yoga class. In reality, practicing yoga is a way to gain such abilities. The Mayo Clinic further notes that with the improved balance, flexibility and range of motion gained through yoga practice, injuries from other physical or day-to-day activities become less likely.

Increased Strength

Although weights are not used in yoga, muscle strength, bone strength and endurance are boosted via the

discipline’s weight-bearing postures. When an American Council on Exercise study recruited 34 healthy women to practice yoga three times a week, they could do an average of six more push-ups and 14 more curlups after eight weeks than they could before.

Relief from Chronic Pain

Research from institutions such as the Mayo Clinic has shown that practicing yoga postures can reduce pain associated with cancer, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases and hypertension, as well as other chronic conditions, including back and neck pain. A study in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that subjects suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome improved their grip strength and reported less pain due to a yoga-based regimen. A nerve test also indicated improvement.

Yoga’s deep breathing, combined with the need for balance and concentration, works to reduce stress, anxiety, heart rate and blood pressure levels, according to research published by the Mayo Clinic. Yoga’s breathing techniques have reportedly reduced blood pressure more effectively than other soothing activities, such as listening to relaxing music.

Weight Loss

Because yoga tends to raise awareness of the benefits of healthy living, it also is used to motivate overweight individuals to gain control of eating habits and support their efforts to lose weight. Many teachers offer yoga programs specifically designed for those wanting to shed pounds. A 10year lifestyle study of 15,500 adults in their 50s, published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, found that regular yoga practice was associated with less age-related weight gain. Meredith Montgomery is a registered yoga teacher and has been practicing yoga for 12 years.

Better Breathing

Yoga emphasizes slow and deep breathing. Information on Yoga Alliance’s educational website (Yoga Alliance.org) indicates that these deliberate actions are known to activate the body’s parasympathetic system, or relaxation response, while also improving lung function. NaturalTucson.com

SOUND YOGA

PRACTICES by Meredith Montgomery

As a long-distance runner, professional singer and songwriter and worldwide community and environmental activist, Michael Franti lives a life driven by yoga-inspired philosophies, both on and off the mat.

K

nown as one of the most consciously positive artists in music today, Michael Franti has been practicing yoga for 11 years. The discipline resonates with him as a solution to the physical and mental stress he encounters touring on the road, and he has practiced yoga daily ever since his first experience. “I still recall how stiff I was during my first class. I couldn’t touch my toes and I could barely sit with my legs crossed,” Franti reflects.

26

Tucson

Franti reports that he is in better physical shape today than he was 20 years ago. “The great thing about yoga is that it’s not a competition,” says the 45-year-old, who grew up in a competitive household with four siblings before going on to play college basketball at the University of San Francisco. “In yoga, you’re not competing against anyone, which has been a valuable, if difficult lesson for me—to stop thinking, ‘I wish I could do a headstand as well as the person next to me,’ but to instead really embrace where I am at that moment.” After suffering from a series of physical hurdles, including joint problems, operations on his abdomen and a ruptured appendix, Franti continues to be grateful that yoga has prolonged his livelihood as an athlete. He recalls, “There was a time when my body felt like it was breaking down and I thought I was never going to be able to play catch with my son again. But through yoga, I’ve learned that it’s possible to heal my body.” He attributes his ability to play basketball and run long distances to the flexibility and strength derived from his yoga practice. Currently performing with guitar legend Carlos Santana on the Sound of Collective Consciousness tour, Franti weaves the yogic philosophy of ahimsa, or the

sacredness of life and nonviolence in thought or action, into his music. He explains, “For songwriters, one of the most difficult things to do is to instill all of your ideas into just one phrase, word or melody. When I’m in a yoga class, ideas come because my mind is clear, or because I’ll hear my teacher say something that starts me thinking in a different way. Often, when I practice without any sound at all, I’ll hear melodies in my head that I’ll sing to myself as I’m practicing. All of these insights find their way into my songs. “I like to rock out!” notes Franti of his preference for nontraditional yoga music during his personal practice. “Sometimes I make playlists that are all loud dance music, or all reggae. I’ll do a whole class to The Beatles sometimes. Today, I listened to singersongwriter William Fitzsimmons.” A supporter of several charities and an environmental activist, Franti also values seva, a yogic philosophy that emphasizes selfless service. “As an individual in this world, I believe that we all have a responsibility to give back to our communities and to the planet,” he says. Ten years ago, he

decided to go barefoot after playing music for children abroad that could not afford shoes. Since then, he’s remained barefoot, except in airplanes or restaurants. The artist also collects shoes for Soles4Souls (Soles4Souls. org) at all of his shows. As a touring musician, Franti enjoys traveling to places such as Haiti, Israel, Palestine, Brazil and Indonesia so that he can share his music on the streets, but also so that he can experience unfamiliar settings. “I learn so much when I go outside of my comfort zone. Similarly, yoga forces us to step outside of our comfort zone and look at our self from a different perspective.” Although he enjoys practicing advanced arm balances and inversions, the final pose in every class, savasana, is Franti’s favorite. “It doesn’t matter if I’m at a workshop for three hours and we do 15 minutes of the relaxation pose, or if I just did one side of a sun salutation and I lay on my back for three minutes. Savasana always changes my whole outlook on life, on my day and the present moment. To lay quietly on my back on the floor, close my eyes, breathe deeply and

let everything go for a few minutes enables me to then move forward into whatever comes next in my day.” Meredith Montgomery publishes the Mobile/Baldwin, AL, edition of Natural Awakenings (HealthyLivingHealthy Planet.com). She also serves as director of donor relations for National Yoga Month (YogaMonth.org).

Spiritual Awakenings

Abundance is Yours for the Asking

by Linda West

A Reality leaves a lot to the imagination. ~John Lennon

28

Tucson

ccording to information from the Angels, our government will continue to be in gridlock (too many egos) and unemployment will continue at a high rate. In other words, if you are counting on the physical world to meet your needs, you will be very disappointed. The Angels have some great news for you—even though our physical world is not going to change much, you can still have love, money, joy and happiness—all the things contained in abundance. In order to create abundance in your life though, you have to adopt a new way of thinking. You must move yourself up to a higher frequency where the flow of Divine energy is, which of course, contains all abundance. You must start by learning to receive. So simple, yet most of us struggle at receiving. You can help others and give ‘til it hurts’ yes, you are good at that. Understand that what you send out is what you get back, but you are messing with the flow by not knowing how to say yes to receiving. You literally have created a wall between you and your good, with all that abundance piled up behind it. Each morning, wake up and claim, “I give intent to receive all my abundance.” Declare it to the Universe with joy in your heart—that will get the energy moving. Once you do that, it’s time to Believe you deserve to have abundance, believe there is an energy much more powerful that you, that resides within you and loves you and wants you to be abundant. Yes, believe. Good job, you are rising up in frequency. Let’s keep going now. Trust that the power of the Universe is going to give you what you want and need, but understand it

never, ever, comes in the manner that you think it will. You are going to have to trust me on this one, don’t tell the Angels how to do it. The view from the Universe, the Source, the Angels, is much larger than you could ever comprehend. Synchronicity is created in a way that will blow your mind. Thank goodness you don’t have to figure it out. Synchronicity is created in a way that will blow your mind. Thank goodness you don’t have to figure it out. Now, the biggie—Detach. By the way, that means let go. Let go of needing to control the situation. Please understand the more you push, the more you try to force your will and the more you push away the abundance. Want to know why? Well, you push and shove and force things to happen because you don’t believe or trust that the Universe will do it. Surprise—the Universe, Source, Angels—do it much better than you can. As soon as you Detach, you raise the frequency around you, and then all you need and desire will come your way. Take the challenge to raise your frequency and have and enjoy the life of your dreams. Transcending the Merry-Go-Round

Spiritual Awakenings

M

aster Bud-Ra-KCri-Da is offering mastered spiritual discourses and most en-lighten-ing good company to help individuals, “get off the Merry-GoRound, once and for all.” For those tired of trying to “fix” a boss, a wife, a husband, kids, poor habits or situation and can’t seem to figure it all out, Bud-Ra-KCri-Da asks, “What if you didn’t need to figure it all out? What if you no longer reacted to the drama in your life or in your mind?” Bud-Ra-KCri-Da explains that the mind always operates from a context of figuring it all out; from fear, and the way to transcend the fearful mind is to live from a conscious, open heart. To live from the conscious heart, the heart needs to trust and not be overruled by the controlling mind. He says, “To truly open our hearts and overrule the mind, we need to spend time in company of someone who loves and lives from the state of a perpetually open heart. We need a teacher who is evolved (realized); one who radiates this state of being and in time, we “get it.” This is the gift of Spiritual Sanity for Humanity.” For weekly AZ. Magdalena’s New Book Builds on Four Agreements

A

rizona writer Amari Magdalena has released a new self-awareness book, Beyond the Four Agreements: Mastering the Inner Shields of Transformation, about utilizing ancient wisdom to achieve inner-healing and outer happiness. In a world where outer relationships fracture and fail regularly, Amari presents practical tools for healing the most important inner relationship of self. Beyond the Four Agreements builds a bridge between two Toltec Masteries—the Mastery of Awareness and the Mastery of Transformation. Expanding on The Four Agreements and ways in which unhealed parts of self sabotage the agreements, Amari takes the reader on a guided adventure through a series of activities designed to awaken qualities within that are often projected onto others as unrealistic relationship expectations. Magdalena is the founder and director of the Institute for Shamanic Synthesis, a school without walls, established in 1995 to promote cross-cultural shamanism. She was an early apprentice of Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements. She also produced and hosted the radio show, “Shaman Talk.” Beyond the Four Agreements is available on Amazon.com and other online booksellers. Techniques

to exonerate non-divine energies

F

or the past 11 years, divine energy work has been a big part of Cate Brandt’s life. Achieving Reiki mastery and working with the angelic realm, she has attained a sense of balance, peace, and freedom. A desire to share her knowledge led her to open her own healing practice one year ago. Through experiences in her practice, Brandt realized how truly important decording non-divine energy is to manage a healthy well-being. Along with using techniques she created to remove non-divine energies and spirits, she teaches them to her clients. Brandt has developed the ability to activate clients’ “Armor of God” for their protection against the non-divine. With her knowledge and sensitivity to various energy vibrations, she believes it is essential for people to deal with these nondivine energies to live a prosperous, productive and pain-free life. A Path to True Insight

Write from

the Heart by Nancy Rosanoff

T

Lucia Maya Intuitive Guidance Reiki • Craniosacral Raindrop Technique

luminousadventures.com 520-579-8844

he best definition of intuition is that which we know in our hearts to be true. When we feel good and right about a decision, we often attribute it to having followed our intuition. There is a difference, however, between what “feels good” and what we “know in our hearts.” Discerning this difference separates wishful thinking from true intuitive intelligence. Intuitive intelligence can be identified by the qualities that accompany it, like effortlessness, clarity, inspired ideas, synchronicity and profound peace. As these qualities also represent the spiritual substance of our selves, the intuitive insights we receive resonate with the truth of our being. When faced with a challenging choice, it helps to look for the presence or absence of harmony, clarity and peace before taking any action. Jumping into action out of frustration is not intuitively intelligent, while waiting for answers that bring clarity and inner peace is a flawless guide. To move through the layers of confusion and emotion when facing a dilemma, it helps to identify both what we want and what is needed. Confusion often characterizes the conflict between our personal agenda, which may be hidden from us, and the action that the situation genuinely calls for. The following exercise can move our attention beyond focusing on the details of a problem to an awareness of what is really needed. As the steps unfold, NaturalTucson.com

take notice of any enhanced feelings of peace, assurance, gratitude and love.

1

Write down a specific concern. Are you at a crossroads? It could be a work concern, a relationship issue or anything else.

2

Below it, write, “What I really want is… ” and then finish the sentence with your natural, immediate response. Repeat this several times, finishing the sentence with another thought each time. It can be embarrassing when our wants are revealed to us. Keep going.

3

Now write the following: “What this situation really needs is… ” Write the phrase several times, finishing the sentence with another thought each time.

4

Be sure not to add “from me” to the above sentence, even in your thoughts. Let the ideas that come flow through you and onto the page, enriched by clarity, love, intelligence, and benevolence for you and everyone involved.
