We Have the ‘Write’ to Heal

According to Mental Health America, “over half of adults with a mental illness do not receive treatment, totaling over 27 million adults in the U.S. who are going untreated.” What can we expect when natural disasters, gun violence, trauma, disease and death are everywhere? We either wear a brave face or turn our fear into rage, substance abuse or numbness. Losing control can bring up palpable feelings that result in negative behaviors that we overlook.

Unthinkable things trigger fear for the future or trau mas from our past. Suppressing discomfort may seem like the only way to cope, but it is harmful. When one elects not to be treated by a therapist because they haven’t been officially diagnosed, troubling feelings still need attention. Religion, spirituality, exercise and hobbies do distract. However, writing is a proven therapeutic tool that helps tackle feelings and restore balance.

“Deep disclosure improves mood, objective and subjective health and the ability to function well,” according to PhDs James W. Pennebaker and Joshua Smyth. Their clas sic study tasked 50 healthy undergraduates with writing about traumatic experiences for four days. After, participants reported more positive moods and fewer illnesses.

Yes, writing has a bad rap for being a laborious chore that you hope never to do again. The good news is that “writing” has changed. Without the pressure of spelling, grammar or criticism, therapeutic writing has proven to be miraculous for adults who seek to heal from past trauma. Therapeutic writing needs no destination or applause. It is an effective healing balm for your soul.

Stretching and Balance Exercises Can Avert Mental Decline

To protect against memory loss, simple stretching and balance exercises work as well as hard-driving aerobics, concludes a new study from Wake Forest University. The study enrolled 296 sedentary older adults with mild cogni tive decline such as forgetting dates, keys and names. Those that performed simple stretching routines for 120 to 150 minutes per week experienced no memory decline in a year’s time, as measured by cognitive tests and brain scans that showed no shrinkage. These results matched the outcome of people that did moderate-intensity aerobic training on treadmills or stationary bikes four times a week, striving for about 30 to 40 minutes of a heightened heart rate. A control group of equally matched people that did not exercise did decline cognitively. The people that exercised were supervised by trainers at local YMCAs, which may have helped them stay motivated, say the researchers.

Cleansing Our Energy to Create a Happier State of Mind

Energy creates matter. Being vigilant of our energy within is important because it has a frequency, and that frequency impacts and organizes matter.

We are surrounded by energy fields—in the world, the people around us and the thoughts we hold and give strength to. We choose to give it meaning, and thereby energy. Thoughts of fear and negative judgment are limiting and constrict ing. Our cells respond to the energy we choose, so we want to be aware of where our focus goes.

Many experiments have been done to demon strate the power of prayer and meditation on water, for example. Observing water under a microscope, putrid water was just an ugly globe without shape or specific forms. After prayer, that same water showed up as beautiful crystals and clarity. Our bodies are 70 percent water. How are we directing that water, those fluids within us, to form and create matter within us?

It is not easy to hold positive thoughts in our mind when the world around us is full of fear and uncertainty. And yet, we can change how we respond to it. Connecting with a higher Source and seeing the good, while forgiving what is not uplifting our energy, is possible.

We take showers almost daily to cleanse the outside of our body. How are we cleans ing our energy? It can easily be done almost daily without taking a lot of time. We can release the negative energy simply by tapping on certain meridian points. The ancient Chinese knew how to do it, why not use the proven method? Today we can apply this almost any time to let go of damaging feelings of stress, anxiety, fear and so many other harmful energies. We can be free of our damaging emotions.

Don’t let the world dictate what you feel. You are in charge, and you deserve a happy state of mind. Let’s do it together and return to better health and a calmness that creates a happy body. Your energy creates the matter of your body.

Review Your Medicare Plan Now for Your Best Coverage in 2023

Medicare

beneficiaries should review their plan yearly. There may be a new plan that better meets current needs. The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a set time each year for changing your Medicare cover age choices, if you choose. AEP runs from October 15 to December 7. New coverage choices go into effect on January 1. Shopping for insurance can feel tedious and overwhelming. Perhaps that’s why many Medicare beneficiaries opt to stay in their current plan, even if it’s the one they were auto-enrolled into when they became Medicare-eligible.

A Medicare review during the AEP gives a chance to review benefits, decide whether the plan is working for one’s needs and prepare to possibly switch to another option. Reviewing plan options is important because new Medicare Advantage plans become available each year. For those who have original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan may cover ad ditional services, such as vision and dental care. If already using Medicare Advantage, a different plan might better serve individual needs. Reviewing the options can help with selecting the plan that best fits one’s current health and financial realities.

As our life needs change, so too might our Medicare needs. Moving to a nursing home or developing a chronic illness may mean that a Medicare Advantage special needs plan will be a good option.

Some signs that one may need to change their Medicare plan include: paying more out-of-pocket for medical expenses, taking a new prescription drug that is not covered, seeing different doc tors who do not accept the current plan or simply not having evaluated plan options in several years.

It is always a good time to review Medi care coverage. Gap coverage that covers co-pays and services that Medicare does not cover such as co-pays for hospital stays and emergency services, dental/vi sion/hearing, cancer and critical illness and final expense coverage are available throughout the entire year. Many may be eligible for a special enrollment period.

Holly Baker is an independent Medicare advisor in Tucson. She provides complimentary cost and coverage reviews to Medicare enrollees and helps clients fill the holes in Medicare. There is never a charge to the client for her services. Connect at 520-769-2378 or Holly@ LifeSolutionsAdvisors.net. See ad, page 9.

KEY NUTRIENTS

for Children’s Immune Health

Kids are exposed to many germs, viruses and potential intruders from a very young age. Supporting children’s immune health through nutrients and dietary compounds can help reduce time spent sick and provide a muchneeded boost to their developing immune systems.

Vitamin C is probably the best-known nutrient for supporting immune health, in both adults and children. Vitamin C can stimulate the immune system and plays a critical role in preventing oxidative damage that can occur as part of the response to an infection.

Vitamin D probably does not come to mind when thinking of how to support children’s immune health, but it should.

Vitamin D is a powerful immune regulator due to the presence of Vitamin D recep tors on almost every type of immune cell.

Zinc, a mineral involved in hundreds of reactions in the body, is an impor tant component for rapidly diving cells, including those in the immune system. Zinc helps defend against oxidative stress, increases components of the immune response, such as antibodies, and helps maintain the integrity of skin and muco sal membranes, the first line of defense against invading pathogens.

Gut health is an important, but often forgotten, piece of immune health. Maintaining a diverse, healthy popula tion of beneficial bacteria can help the immune system respond properly when it encounters a pathogen. Probiotics can help deliver specific good bacteria to the gut, whereas prebiotics are a source of food for bacteria that are already present.

One specific prebiotic, 2’-fucosyllactose (2’-FL), is a unique prebiotic that is only usable by good bacteria. Providing 2’-FL can help beneficial bacteria flour ish, which helps support both gut and immune health. 2’-FL can also act as a binding decoy for toxins and pathogens, preventing invasion into the body.

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) can also support children’s immune health. Elderberry contains high concentrations of phenolic compounds called antho cyanins, which are potent antioxidants and capable of supporting the immune system’s response to an infection.

Children are especially vulnerable to pathogens due to their developing im mune system. Providing additional sup port through vitamins, minerals, herbs and prebiotics can enhance the immune response and provide both acute and long-lasting immune support.

Ten years without a cold?

Copper can stop a virus before it starts

Scientists have discovered a natural way to kill germs fast.

Now thousands of people are using it against viruses and bacteria that cause illness.

Colds and many other illnesses start when viruses get in your nose and multiply. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

Hundreds of studies confirm copper kills viruses and bacteria almost instantly just by touch.

That’s why ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. They didn’t know about viruses and bacteria, but now we do.

“The antimicrobial activity of copper is well established.” National Institutes of Health.

Scientists say copper’s high conductance disrupts the electrical balance in a microbe cell and destroys it in seconds.

The EPA recommended hospitals use copper for touch surfaces like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.

The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. He made a smooth copper probe

with a tip to fit in the bottom of the nostril, where viruses collect.

When he felt a tickle in his nose like a cold about to start, he rubbed the copper gently in his nose for 60 seconds.

“It worked!” he exclaimed. “The cold never happened. I used to get 2-3 bad colds every year. Now I use my device whenever I feel a sign I am about to get sick.”

He hasn’t had a cold in 10 years.

Users say:

“It works! I love it!”

“I can’t believe how good my nose feels.”

“Is it supposed to work that fast?”

“One of the best presents ever.”

“Sixteen flights, not a sniffle!”

“Cold sores gone!”

“It saved me last holidays. The kids all got sick, but not me.”

“I am shocked! My sinus cleared, no more headache, no more congestion.”

“Best sleep I’ve had in years!”

After his first success with it, he asked relatives and friends to try it. They all said it worked, so he patented CopperZap® and put it on the market.

Soon hundreds of people had tried it. 99% said copper worked if they used it right away at the first sign of germs, like a tickle in the nose or a scratchy throat.

Longtime users say they haven’t been sick in years. They have less stress, less medical costs, and more time to enjoy life.

Soon people found other things they could us it against.

The handle is curved and textured to increase contact. Copper can kill germs picked up on fingers and hands after you touch things other people have touched.

The EPA says copper works just as well when tarnished.

Dr. Bill Keevil led one of the science teams. He placed millions of viruses on a copper surface. “They started to die literally as soon as they touched it.”

Changing Subconscious Beliefs Can Change Our Lives Our

subconscious beliefs about ourselves can powerfully influence the course of our lives, for better or for worse. According to world-famous hypnotherapist, Marisa Peer, a belief triggers a feeling, the feeling trig gers an action and that action leads to events in our lives.

If the initial belief was positive, such as “I am loveable and I deserve to be treated with respect,” we are more likely to approach our lives with a positive outlook. Our positive self-belief leads to a feeling of confidence. This confidence may make us more likely to choose relationships with people who treat us well. However, if someone has the belief “I am unlovable. I have to work hard to earn love,” that person may be more likely to accept poor treatment from others because they were never taught that they deserve better.

Importantly, it is never a person’s fault for having negative self-beliefs, nor do they “deserve” the poor treatment they may receive from others. These beliefs are subconscious, meaning we are not consciously aware that we have them. We often form these beliefs when we’re very young and don’t have the life experience to know that the beliefs are not true and can actually cause us harm.

The good news is, we can change our beliefs using the power of the subconscious mind with techniques such as hypnosis. Issues like feelings of anxiety and low self-esteem can be transformed into confidence and high self-esteem. By changing our subconscious beliefs, we can change our lives.

Quick Tips for Better Mental Well-Being

There are hundreds of aspects to mental well-being. Consider these three meaningful ones:

• We can direct our thoughts, not the other way around.

• Living authentically.

• Finding an inner peace. How can we attain those states?

Observe your thoughts—without judgement. Acknowledge them, then remind yourself: “I am not my thoughts. I can direct my thoughts where I choose.” Have a goto thought or affirmation that helps you reclaim your power if you find your thoughts trying to run away with you.

Pay attention to and trust your inner promptings. No one knows what’s right for you except you. Even if you feel you can’t act on it now, journal about it. You are be coming aware of what your inner self is communicating to you, and you will gradually become more in touch with and able to live your authentic life.

Get support from others. Transformational coaching, vibrational healing and guided meditations can all help release unhealthy patterns, access your inner knowing and develop confidence to live your true self. This will lead to heart-mind coherence and inner peace.

SHE’S GOT MOXIE Meet Passionista Deb Beroset

DebBeroset is an award-winning journalist, a mother and a muse. When she was 56, single, and had just gone through some rough emotional and financial times af ter a divorce, she had a nagging feeling that she was just nibbling at the edges of life. She had also harbored a long-time dream of creating something for herself. Beroset decided it was now or never, and so she claimed her vision and left a corporate job to create Moxie, a business that helps others to thrive.

Beroset’s life followed an eclectic path prior to becoming an entrepreneur. She started out studying music—French horn and violin, to be exact. After one year of music school at the Univer sity of Michigan, she realized the life of a professional French horn player in an orchestra was not the movie she wanted to be living. As much as she loved music, she needed way more variety and flexibility. So she decided to go with her other love, writing, and study journalism.

However, before she had a chance to enroll in a new school, she had a wild opportunity fall out of the sky. Her Uncle Bill, who had an oil pipe coating business in Dubai at the time, called

her and said if she could get over there in two weeks, he’d hire her as a secretary. While she had no interest in a secretarial career, this open door to a different world was attractive and exciting, so she said yes.

“I wound up staying in Dubai for three years, most of that time working as a journalist for the Gulf News. I talked my way into a writing audition (I only had high school paper experience at the time) and got the gig, and what a life-changing turning point that was. My years overseas shaped me in so many ways,” she reminisces.

Eventually she returned to the U.S. to get that college degree. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism—specializing in magazine journalism—and went on to do graduate work in sociology, with a concentration in the culture of cyberspace. “There was no obvious reason for me to do that. I was just fascinated with the whole emerging internet thing. This was in the late ‘80s, and I was very curious about the impact it would have on how we live and learn and connect,” she says.

“For context, the World Wide Web opened to the public in 1991, so it’s safe to say I’ve been drawn to this online world since its beginning. I had my first baby at the tail end of my master’s program and never did the thesis, but it didn’t matter really be cause I’d learned so much,” she recalls. “I had no way of knowing that one day I’d be collaborating with people around the world via this internet thing.”

Beroset’s journalism career included writing for The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and many magazines, includ ing Redbook, Glamour, Ladies’ Home Journal, Entrepreneur, Fast Company, and more. “My most fun job working for someone else was my stint at Hallmark, where I headed up the company’s internal think tank. I was fortunate to work with some truly extraordinary people there, and I learned a lot about innovation and the creative process,” she notes.

Beyond formal education, she’s been engaged in different forms of personal development work her whole adult life. Bero set explains, “It’s not out of trying to fix anything. I gave up on that a long time ago. It’s about expanding my mind, tapping into my soul, learning more about who is this Deb person, and how might I best live this one wild and precious life of mine?”

She did the Landmark Forum, and she was profoundly moved by it. That led to years of participation with Landmark World wide, and she went on to lead seminars for Landmark for eight years, and oversaw the company’s public relations for 12 years. Beroset also studied with BEAbove Leadership and is certified in coaching that is grounded in neuroscience and focused on a transformational journey.

She says it’s no coincidence that she met her husband within mere weeks of her decision to leave her corporate job and pursue her dream of creating something of her own. “When your ac tions are in alignment with your soul and your dreams, it’s as if the universe says, ‘Oh, okay, you’re serious about this. Let’s get this party started,’” she says.

“Having a life partner who is a highvibe old soul—and as committed to my dreams as I am—is the treasure of a lifetime. Don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s too late for love,” she opines.

Q&A with Moxie Creator

Deb Beroset

Do you consider yourself a life coach?

Calling me a life coach is like calling Willy Wonka a candy maker. Is it true? To an ex tent, sure. What doesn’t get communicated by that term is the magic. I engage people’s imaginations in new ways, I spark their creativity, I create experiences, and I help them elevate their energy, tap into their own innate wisdom and get their passions expressed in life. And how we go on that journey involves some mystical, artistical, magical means. Ultimately, it’s all about unleashing your magic—that unique spark and song within each person.

I currently describe my job as Creative Muse & Mentor of Delight. That feels much truer to me.

What do you think is the key to your success?

I am a creative beast. I am willing to go unfamiliar places, stretch myself to try new things, risk failure and looking bad, and be a beginner repeatedly. That takes some real fortitude, a deep trust that my innate knowing and intuition will steer me in directions I cannot fully understand with my mind alone. Also, I am absolutely, positively unwilling to give up on having a life that turns me on. So even when I make a mistake or hit a rough patch, I might hide under the covers for a minute, but I’m dependable to get back in the game.

What is your mission in life?

I like to think of one’s mission or calling or dharma as a Cosmic Job Description, and there’s no HR department to tell you if you’re qualified—you just are. Mine is that people experience beauty. And that’s not just beauty in an aesthetic sense, though it includes that. I mean people get to experi ence the wonder and awe of being present to their own magic. They feel the heartswelling beauty of love. They tap into the exquisite space of full-tilt boogie aliveness. If around me, some of all that is happen ing, I’m getting my Cosmic Job done and am an incredibly happy, fulfilled gal.

There are many, many ways one’s mis sion or purpose can get expressed, and I feel extremely fortunate that I’ve found a fun and impactful way to express mine through my work in Moxie. Through Moxie, what I’m pouring my energy and love into—serving and connecting soulful women with their magic and each other— is a fantastic way for me to be living true to what I say I’m here to give.

How do you define moxie, and how do you know if you have it?

It’s a bodacious full-tilt boogie of freedom and joy. Dancing at the edge of what you think you know. Permission to speak and sing and soar. Living full swing, this one wild life. That’s moxie.

Everybody’s got moxie in them; it’s just not always expressed. All humans are wired to want to live that way, and some times things happen that tamp it down or bury it so deeply that one gets out of the habit of even hoping for that kind of life, let alone going for it.

You know you’ve got moxie—as in your moxie is alive and well—when you are moving toward what makes you come alive. It’s not necessarily fancy and it ain’t always pretty, and there can be some wild bumps in the road, but if you’re on the journey guided by aliveness, you’ve for sure got some moxie in the mix.

It’s a funny thing, defining moxie. One thing I’ve for sure learned, working with hundreds of women: everybody knows it when they see it.

How can someone best align their own life and work with their values?

Well the first thing is to do the deep dive, the soul work, to discover one’s purpose—Cosmic Job Description—and discern what it is that makes your heart skip a beat in a good way. If you look back through your life, and you go search ing like you know they’re there, you’ll start seeing themes that run through like beautiful threads. Maybe you’re all about having people thrive, or being a creative catalyst or being a source of peace and healing. Whatever that essence of you is,

19November 2022
Deb Beroset and her husband Chris

that beautiful gift you bring to the party of life, we want that to have a way to grow. If you’re someone who’s all about bring ing people together and celebrating life, you’re going to be like a flower trying to grow in a cave if you have no way to get that natural talent and inclination of yours expressed. So think about what’s central to who you are at your best, and then look at each area of your life to find new ways to give those natural gifts of yours the light and oxygen they need.

How do cultural pressures interfere with us achieving happiness?

Wow, we could talk for hours about that. Some that come up a lot in conversations with my clients and the women in the

online community, Club Moxie, are the cul tural norms about beauty, the expectations of women as caregivers to all, the push many of us feel to “succeed” in some way that’s not ultimately satisfying to us and the misguided notion that there is some way we are supposed to behave and look and be.

It really takes something to live a life that’s not defined by those cultural con straints. It takes doing the work to really get in touch with your own self again. To learn who you are at this juncture in your life. And then to muster the courage to act accordingly, even though it’s often uncomfortable at first. I mean of course it’s uncomfortable, you’re saying “hell, no” to some cultural conversation not of your making, and you’re saying yes to some thing that is true to who you really are.

Post-pandemic, how do you avoid going back to a life that doesn’t feel right?

As we all know that time when the world shut down was a powerful invitation for many people to do some reassessing. Many of us were motivated to change some things up to have a life that felt more in alignment and meaningful.

How you avoid backsliding to a life that doesn’t feel right, is you expand your capacity for the right kind of discomfort. When there’s a gap between how things are, and how you want them to be, that’s unsettling. There’s uncertainty, and the brain turns uncertainty into fear. Given that, making any kind of change, even

when it’s one you dearly want, can be scary.

It helps to know that ahead of time, though. It’s like being on a plane and being told there’s going to be a little turbulence, and then smooth sailing. You buckle up, know there will be some bumps, and then you fly right through that rough patch to the blue skies beyond.

In what ways do a person’s fears interfere with achieving their goals?

Fear wants to pull us back; it wants us to withdraw. Fear wants us to get in bed in our flannel jammies and never come out from under the covers, so we’ll be safe from everything. The problem is, as a life style, that energy is very diminishing. It makes us small and timid. And when we feel like that, it’s hard to take any real steps toward a goal because it’s scary as hell.

The good news is courage is something you can learn to access. And it’s one of my absolute favorite things—to be witness to a woman throwing her shoulders back and stepping into a new future, even though fear is definitely present in the mix.

What is soul care?

I define Soul Care as self-care for the spirit. There’s the bubble bath form of self-care, which is important, of course. Even deeper and more impactful is the practice of caring for your spirit—where you listen for what your Soul wants. You begin to hear the bubbles of desire and feel all full of possibil ity again. You treat yourself as the guest of honor in your own life. You tend to your energy and mojo. And you take actions in ways that are in alignment with your Soul.

It’s a lifestyle—a beautiful, mindful way of living.

Staying Serene in Turbulent Times

HOW TO TURN ANXIETY INTO POSITIVE ACTION

Inthis day and age, we have good reason to toss and turn in our beds at night. As our nation faces climate catastrophes, acrid politics, stubborn inflation, unpredictable virus variants and hot-button issues like abortion and guns, there’s good reason our collective anxiety levels are at a high pitch. A recent Yale survey found that 70 percent of Americans report being anxious or depressed about global warming, and a Penn State survey this year found that 84 percent of us say we are “extremely worried” or “very wor ried” about where the country is headed. Researchers are coining new terms: “polycrisis”, for complex, cascading crises in interacting systems, and “pre-traumatic stress disorder”, when fear of an outcome makes it as good as real to our psyches.

“It’s easy for people to feel overwhelmed now, feeling there are breakdowns and threats on many fronts. People can wonder ‘Where do I even start?’ and feel powerless and hopeless and numb,” says psychiatrist Janet Lewis, M.D., a founder of the nationwide Climate Psy chiatry Alliance and a University of Rochester clinical assistant professor of psychiatry. “We are part of a complex system that is moving into new ways of functioning, but there’s no way of predicting ahead of time exactly what all the features of the new ways of operating will be. That makes it impossible for us to wrap our minds around everything that is happening.”

Still, she adds, “We are also by definition part of the system, and therefore have a

responsibility to do what we can. We can’t sit on the sidelines and merely hope that things transform in good directions. The situation being so serious also means that what we do now is really important.”

To move from anxiety into effective ac tion, mental health experts advise several strategies: taking a wider perspective, building resilience through self-care and taking individual steps to make a collective difference. As the Dalai Lama encourages, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito!”

Taking a Wider Perspective

News reports almost always sound dire— just like the amygdala of our brains, jour nalists often see their function as focusing on threats to alert us to dangers. “Still, if you take the long view of history, we are much better off than we were 200 years ago or 1,000 years ago, but it took many years to make those changes,” counsels Robert L. Leahy, Ph.D., director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy and author of the bestselling The Worry Cure and the upcoming If Only.

“We never know if something is hope less until we have all the data, and we sel dom have all the data,” he says. “And when it comes to political emotions, many of the predictions that are made by the ‘talking heads’ in media never come true.”

Leahy counsels patience: “Social change does not come about by one person doing something. That usually comes about by a long process of millions of people chang ing their attitudes and changing their behavior. Small efforts can be made on a daily basis that move this slow process forward. We need to take a longer view, rather than expect immediate change.”

In this ongoing process, anxiety has its rightful place. “Anxiety makes us look around, figure out solutions and act. This can absolutely be turned into something positive,” says neuropsychologist Barbara Easterlin, of Jackson, Wyoming, an expert on eco-anxiety who is on the steering committee of the Climate Psychology Al liance of North America. “Doing just one thing to help the planet consistently helps defeat anxiety.”

21November 2022 miniartkur/AdobeStock.com

Taking action moves us into our power—as 15-year-old Greta Thunberg demonstrated by holding a sign outside the Swedish par liament. Personal actions matter because numbers add up. Only 25 percent of individuals in a social group need to make a shift before significant social change follows, conclude researchers at the Univer sity of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science that analyzed a decade of societal changes in voting, health, technology and finance. Once a group reaches that tipping point, it can trigger a change in the rest of society, says study author Damon Centola, Ph.D., author of Change: How to Make Big Things Happen.

Building Resilience with Self-Care

Fears about the shape of the planet and nation are often piled on top of our everyday living anxieties about family and finances, which can induce emotional overload. “We all have a ‘zone of resilience’ or ‘window of tolerance’, outside of which we become more reactive, less able to function effectively. But it is not fixed. We can learn tools to expand it and cultivate the capacity to be with more,” says Easterlin.

Therapy can be a part of that process by challenging us to examine “the mental narratives that can exacerbate distress,” says Leslie Davenport, a climate psychology consultant and author of Emotional Resiliency in the Era of Climate Change. It’s important to find a therapist, she says, that “validates that your feelings are a normal response to an existential crisis.” She has helped develop new programs at the American Psychology Association and the California Institute of Integral Studies to train therapists

in treating eco-anxiety. For low-cost online support, the Good Grief Network offers a 10-step, 10-week program to help process personal anxiety and grief about climate change. People are also sitting down to share their distress at climate cafes, small local gatherings springing up across the country and globe, including some online.

Getting enough sleep, eating healthy and exercising are also key self-care strategies. When anxiety strikes, psychologists advise shifting attention from the head to the body, using such approaches as mindful breathing, dancing and grounding. Medi tation, easily accessed these days through apps like Calm and Headspace, helps us to enter into what religious and spiritual teachings call “the still point within.”

Rather than “doomscrolling” when anxiety mounts, cutting back our media use can significantly lower stress levels, studies show. Wise media strategies include choosing well-established, credible news sources; reading rather than watching the news to lower its emotional impact; limiting news intake to 10 minutes once or twice a day; taking a “news fast” on occasion; and pass ing up sources that incessantly feed fury.

On the other hand, it’s essential to find sources for hope, an emotion important in recovery from anxiety disorders, according to a study in Behavior Therapy. Googling “good news on climate change” will bring up articles about alternative energy growth, new super-enzymes that eat plastic rubbish and black rhinos coming back from the brink of extinction. Although dystopic books abound, others offer hope, such as Drawdown, with its

sensible, scaled-down strategies to stop global warming by 2050.

Moving into Action

Virtually no one can take on all the problems of the nation and globe at once—and the good news is that unless we hold high public office, we don’t have to. Instead, “In taking action, focus on what you are good at, what your sphere of influence might be,” ad vises Lewis. “What are you most heartbroken over? Get involved in that and allow yourself to feel really good about what you’re doing and other people are doing.”

By narrowing our focus, we can hone in on an issue and figure out our part in its solution. “We need a broad range of collective action for transformation,” says Davenport. “For climate change, a teacher could bring social-emotional learning to climate education into the classroom or start an after school ‘green club’; an artist could use their creative medium to communicate about climate in a moving way that could engage others; a nurse could create a waste-reduction initiative within a medical setting. These efforts all have ripple effects and help to elevate each other.”

In one recent study, people were found to consume less energy if they believed their neighbors did so and personally cared about conservation. Our neighborhoods are the place to take the small, meaningful steps that address the “crisis of connection” underly ing rancorous national crises, says New York Times columnist David Brooks. He advocates “radical mutuality”, saying, “Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone.” Through simple actions like having casual conversations around town, pitching in to help a family in crisis, bringing a salad to a block party, tutoring a child or holding a civic post, we build the warm relational bonds that strengthen communities. As we meet others that feel as strongly as we do about our issues, our numbers start building and collective action can unfold.

“Independent of political beliefs, many people can find com mon values such as wanting safety for their families, a clean environment with clean waterways and recreation in natural environments,” says Easterlin.

That, in turn, helps lower our distress. A recent Yale study found that eco-anxiety was linked to depression only among stu dents not involved in group activities; those engaged in collective action such as being part of an environmental group, working in a letter-writing campaign or going to events or protests did not spiral downward emotionally. “Personal transformation and social transformation happen simultaneously. When you reach out and build community, you nourish yourself,” Brooks says.

As Thunberg has put it: “When I’m taking action, I don’t feel like I am helpless and that things are hopeless, because then I feel like I’m doing everything I can. And that gives me very much hope, especially to see all the other people all around the world, the activists, who are taking action and who are fighting for their present and for their future.”

Group Ketamine for Collective Healing

According to a 2020 National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) report, one in five adults in the U.S. experience mental illness each year. Based on the fact that this report was published before the pandemic hit our shores, and because many reports have subsequently come out declaring the state of mental health in America as a crisis, it is clear that swift actions need to be taken to mitigate this experience.

Etymology online defines a crisis as a turning point, a point at which change must come. If you listen to any news media, it may feel like an onslaught of crises. Yes, change must come. And what do they say about how difficult change can be for us as individuals? Seemingly insurmountable.

Mental health, and the pursuit and education of it, is only beginning to be seen beyond the realm of stigma, the hush-hush corridors of that which shall not be named, which varies greatly across cultural divides. Psychoanalysis and therapy is a relatively new practice, less than two centuries old. As such, it is constantly developing and evolving to accommodate more research, more modalities and, of course, more people.

From Liberation Psychology, we understand that the individual doesn’t come to therapy alone, but with an ancestral, cultural, familial and social inheritance of the psychic variety. As our nervous systems are primed for safety, these spaces can be dif ficult, and maybe even dangerous, to venture into alone. It is within the mental health practitioner’s room that we feel held to examine whether these beliefs are healthy for us and support us in navigating the path forward.

Compounded by the collective obstacles we face, such as climate change, home lessness, white supremacy, sexism, disease and loneliness, it is no wonder we have a mental health crisis on our hands and no wonder so many are struggling with making meaning in our world. Therapists are tasked with holding space for all of this and are always looking for better tools to support this process. Cue the momentous main streaming of psychedelics.

Research studies report over and over again the benefits of psychedelics for neuro genesis (making new neural connections in our brains), healing chronic pain, treating

PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression and giving us a sense of interconnectedness and meaning.

In a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy clinic, psychedelic clinicians hold space with integrity and with sacredness. This allows the client to venture into the dark territory of their minds, gently guided by a team of experienced psychedelic therapists and social workers.

Ketamine, the only currently legal psy chedelic that can be used therapeutically in a clinical setting, is proving to have a profound effect on healing. However, it is not the most affordable option, as it is not currently FDA-approved for its offlabel use (meaning not using it the way it was created to be used, as an anesthetic in surgical procedures). This is why uti lizing Ketamine in group therapy spaces is a game changer. But its affordability is not the only benefit. A group experience can have a diminishing effect on the iso lation and alienation that we individuals are facing.

A recent report published by Harvard concluded that 36 percent of all Ameri cans—including 61 percent of young adults and 51 percent of mothers with young children—feel “serious loneliness”.

This report was published after the onset

and while it might be

to shake our fingers at COVID for

dilemma, according to a study done by Cigna before the pandemic hit our shores, loneliness had already been of epidemic proportion, affecting three in five Americans, a 13 percent increase from 2018.

It is becoming increasingly more evi dent that what we need are better support systems and communities that show up for one another, in celebration and in grief. We are, us humans, social creatures that rely on a sense of belonging and an actual felt experience of it, in order to survive. The lie, and great gaslighting, is around the narrative that it is the respon sibility of the individual to provide, suc ceed, support, produce and consume, all by themselves. This is not only unrealistic, but also dangerous for our mental health.

Group Ketamine experiences include three, hour-long sessions with a maxi mum of three other participants who have collectively agreed upon rules that help them feel safe, and which is facili tated by two mental health practitioners and a medical provider. These sessions are followed by group integration, which happens at least 48 hours later.

Over and over again, group experienc es increase the sense of connection with one another, empathy, feeling seen and heard, inspiration, safety and problem solving. While we collectively have so much work to do to get to where we want to be, could group Ketamine help us get there with heart? We think so.

Caregiving Companions

THE MANY BENEFITS OF SERVICE, THERAPY AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMALS

Animalsoffer support to humans in innumerable ways, acting as loyal companions, providing soothing therapy and emotional support, and being attentive service ani mals for invaluable medical assistance. As animals increasingly take on these roles in public spaces, it is necessary to understand what each category offers and the type of access each is given.

“Some people misrepresent their animals as assistance animals in order to bring them to places where pets are not allowed, to avoid fees or out of a misunderstanding of the animal’s role,” states the American Veterinary Medical Association (avma.org). It points out that although service, therapy and emotional sup port animals are sometimes referred to interchangeably, they are distinct categories, each with its own definition.

Assistance Animals: As defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, an assistance animal is “any animal that works, provides assistance or performs tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability, or provides emotional sup port that alleviates one or more identified symptoms or effects of a person’s disability.” If certain conditions are met, a person may be entitled to keep an assistance animal in a housing facility that would otherwise prohibit animals.

Service Animals: The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 defines a service animal as “any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an indi vidual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual or other mental disability.” Aside from miniature horses, no other species are included.

Service animals perform such tasks as helping with navigation, pulling a wheelchair, assisting during a seizure, providing protec tion or rescue work, alerting a person to allergens and interrupt ing impulsive or destructive behavior.

Emotional Support Animals: Emotional support ani mals (ESA), according to the Fair Housing Act and the Air Car rier Access Act (ACAA), can be any species. Both laws require a disability-related need and a recommendation by a medical or mental health professional. ESAs do not have to be trained to perform a particular task and may be permitted in otherwise

26 Tucson Edition NaturalTucson.com Sukjai Photo/AdobeStock.com natural pet

banned housing facilities. Some international airlines allow them to travel at no extra cost. As of January 2021, following a U.S. De partment of Transportation rule-tightening, virtually no Ameri can domestic airline allows ESAs to fly free. (Small dogs can still be flown by passengers paying extra.)

Therapy Animals: According to the ACAA, therapy animals may take part in animal-assisted interventions when there’s a “goal-directed intervention in which an animal meeting specific criteria is an integral part of the treatment process.” Animal-assist ed therapy may involve dogs, cats, horses, llamas, pigs and other species, typically in hospitals, schools and rehabilitation centers.

The Many Benefits: There is seemingly no end to the emo tional, physical and mental benefits dogs offer to humans. Regu lar visits with therapy dogs may improve the well-being of people seeking addiction and mental health treatment. Animal-assisted interventions have been used among Canada’s correctional popu lation, for which mental health, addictions and trauma histories are major concerns.

Why They Can Be Controversial:

While service animals are highly trained and can even receive certifications as psychiatric service dogs, ESAs are often pets that help a person to cope with daily life or situations they may otherwise find intoler able, such as being in stores, restaurants, museums and on airline flights and other public transportation.

Controversy has arisen when some people have pushed the line, claiming their pet is necessary for emotional support, but in reality, are just there to enjoy access benefits. Yet, in a survey of more than 500 Americans, both service dogs and emotional sup port dogs were viewed favorably, and most participants reported feeling that the majority of people with such dogs were not taking advantage of the system.

Research published in the journal Anthrozoös found that ani mal-assisted therapy decreased the need for pain medication in people receiving joint replacement therapy. Studies by the Delta Society suggests holding, stroking or simply seeing an animal may lower blood pressure while lessening feelings of hostility and increasing self-esteem. For children, service dogs can be trained to detect the scent of allergens like peanuts or gluten in food and even provide comfort to them and adult witnesses in courtrooms.

Be aware that out in public, certain rules of etiquette apply. Service dogs, in particular, should never be approached, talked to or touched unless permission is granted by the dog’s handler. And take no offense if the handler says no. Distracting a working dog can result in potential harm to the handler and may interfere with the dog’s focus and ability to follow potentially life-saving commands or cues.

ART THERAPY FOR KIDS

a brand-new box of crayons or making a happy mess with homemade salt dough can provide hours of fun for most kids, but art therapy—based in a clinical setting—can help children achieve emotional equilibrium, cultivate social skills and increase their capacity for learning. Dipping a brush into bright colors or creating a collage under the guidance of a qualified therapist can help a child express what is beyond spoken language: unprocessed trauma, emotional and physical pain or the multilevel challenges of autism spectrum disorder.

Opening

“Art therapy is completely different from arts and crafts, or even teaching a child how to do art. The idea behind art therapy is that not everyone attending therapy is able to talk about what is going on inside of them,” says Robyn Spodek-Schindler, owner of Paint the Stars Art Therapy, in Manalapan, New Jersey.

Art and the Nervous System

According to 2018 research published in the Journal of Applied Psychology & Behavioral

Science, painting-based art therapy has been effective in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety in preschool-aged children. Dipping into the unconscious wellspring of creative impulse through doodling and drawing, finger painting or taking a photograph can help kids bounce back more easily from bullying or family conflicts, including divorce. Splashing color on a canvas or throwing pottery has been shown to enhance fine motor skills, increase attention spans and instill a sense of accomplishment. For those that are not neurotypical, engaging in guided artistic

expression can foster sensory integration and promote positive social interaction.

“I have worked with children who have lost a parent, experienced abuse, abandon ment, consequences of addiction in the family, COVID [-19] anxiety and autism spectrum disorders,” says Andrea Davis, founder and CEO of Dallas Art Therapy, in Richardson, Texas. “Many times, the body is expressing the trauma in the form of sleep disturbance, eating changes, anxiety, depression and panic attacks, to name a few. Art-making bypasses the brain’s trau ma response. The art therapist is trained to support the person in the process of creation and allows the person to utilize their other senses to express themselves.”

Celeste Wade, an art psychotherapist at the Child and Family Art Therapy Center, in Haverford, Pennsylvania, emphasizes that emotional processing cannot occur when an individual is on the alert for potential danger, a physiological response from an overstimulated amygdala. “Trau ma needs to be processed for the client to gain mastery and function in a calm state versus fight, flight or freeze. Art making can also activate this area of the brain and have calming effects to counteract trauma responses,” she says.

Willingness, Not Talent

The art therapist provides a nourishing presence without art instruction or cri tiquing, and sessions can be private, in a group setting or include family members. Conversation, combined with art mak ing, is typical in any art therapy session. Schindler stresses that creating pretty images is not the goal of an art therapy

session and dispels the common assump tion that “the person attending art therapy needs to have either a talent in art or an interest in art. They just need the willing ness to participate in a session.” Some children see immediate benefits, while others realize emotional progress after several sessions.

Art therapy, sometimes in conjunction with other modalities, not only gives chil dren a voice, but provides them with an opportunity to stretch their wings. Group therapy, says Davis, “can look like working together to create a collaborative mural. In the process, taking turns, hearing one an other’s ideas, sharing materials, respecting boundaries and each other’s art becomes an important part of meeting goals.”

During an initial art therapy assess ment, Wade might ask a client to draw a family of animals, which creates an opportunity “for the client to share about their own family dynamics in a safe way. If the client has experienced any type of familial trauma and I were to present the same directive as, ‘draw you and your family doing something,’ the child may be more hesitant or may shut down.”

In a world that can be overwhelming, self-expression through art can give a young person a safe harbor. Schindler accentuates human rapport in the clini cal setting, saying, “Art, much like play, is a universal communication tool for children. Sometimes you just feel better when creating and sharing with a trusted person.”
