Detoxing the Body from the Outside

I

n order to be healthy, our organs need to be working properly, allowing them to do their jobs well. Great, organic food will keep us healthy. Getting rid of all of the junk that the body has absorbed over the years will get us started on our journey to good health. Alternatives in Health Care Detox Therapy and Mini Med Spa (AIHC) is all about detoxing the body inside and out as naturally as possible. One of the detoxification possibilities at AIHC utilizes many different steps to help cleanse the body. The detox wrap uses motion therapy, heat therapy, dry brushing, herbal foot soaks and an herbal dermal patch to accomplish its mission of cleansing, replenishing and relaxing the body. The first step of this procedure is 15 minutes on the chi machine to rev up the body’s circulation and oxygenate the blood. Next, dry brushing stimulates the body and helps remove dead, flaky skin. Onto the full body seaweed application, which helps draw toxins out of the body. Once the seaweed gel has been applied, the therapist will apply a plastic wrap over the entire body to hold in natural body heat. Once wrapped, it’s time for a 30-minute sauna session, which includes resting the feet in a basin filled with cool water that contains Epsom and Himalayan salts. A plethora of organic dried herbs work to draw out toxins, relax the body, soothe sore muscles and give a general feeling of well-being. Some of the herbs and flowers contained in this foot bath are lavender, comfry powder, burdock, fennel, elderflower and licorice root. Sage, spearmint leaves and rosemary help round out this beautiful blend of plants. Clients are also served an all-natural mineral drink that contains adaptogens and 70 ionic trace minerals. The nine adaptogenic herbs that are in this formula are ashwaganda root, schizandra extract, tribula terrestris extract, Siberian golden root, Siberian ginseng, rhododendron caucasicum, maca extract, Nepali shilajit and wolfberry extract. Alternatives in Health Care Detox Therapy and Mini Med Spa was one of Tucson’s first natural wellness centers. Their 15-year history has helped give people that want to cleanse their faces and bodies many different options. Connect at Debbie@DetoxTherapySpa.com or DetoxTherapySpa.com. See ad, page 30.

Current research shows that following a plant-based diet not only can reduce the risk of diabetes but can also reverse the disease, thwarting many of the complications associated with it. Registered dietitian Brenda Davis, a world-renowned authority on diabetes, deciphers the latest scientific evidence and explains why and how a high-fiber, highcarbohydrate, plant-focused diet can benefit anyone with this devastating condition. Phytochemicals, plant enzymes, antioxidants, pre- and probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, and plant sterols—found predominantly or exclusively in plant foods—are the essential dietary components that disable the key drivers of diabetes. These food factors work in unison to fight chronic illness, stabilize blood glucose levels, and keep blood pressure and cholesterol in check.

or millions of people who have diabetes, Brenda Davis, R.D. has excellent news: it is truly possible to kick this affliction and live a normal life. In her latest book, Kick Diabetes Essenessentials tials: The Diet and Lifestyle Guide, she lays out a practical plan that explains why a plant-based diet is so effective at mitigating the effects of this disease, and—in many cases of Type 2 diabetes—can actually reverse its course. Together with simple lifestyle changes, here is a blueprint for hope and health. As lead nutritionist with the Diabetes and Wellness Project in the Marshall Islands for over 10 years, Davis has kept abreast of the latest scientific studies on diabetes, which all assert that a dietary arsenal powerful enough to kick diabetes can only be found in plant foods. Well-designed plant-based diets are effective because they address the root causes of diabetes. Low-caloric, nutrient-dense foods are the keys to positive results. Protective dietary components concentrated in plant foods work together to ease inflammation and oxidative stress, stabilize blood glucose, enhance gut microflora and keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels in check. Lifestyle-improvement strategies, such as learning how to manage stress, fitting exercise into daily routines, maintaining a healthy weight and getting adequate sleep, provide a powerful prescription for health when combined with the new diet plan. Included are over 40 satisfying recipes that friends and family will enjoy. For more information, visit BrendaDavisRD.ca.

A Natural Solution to Sleep Apnea According to a National Institutes of Health study, most people believe that sleep apnea is caused by a sagging soft pallet or by some other obstructive tissue in the throat. Actually, it’s the result of a diminishing signal from the brain to the diaphragm (causing one to breathe) that can occur during the transition from initial semi-wakefulness into the next stage of lighter sleep prior to REM sleep. In some people, the unintended reduction in the signal is significant enough that breathing goes beyond being shallow and completely stops. After a short period of time, the brain, realizing the need to breathe, forces a rapid inhalation to restart respiration that literally drags the sagging localized soft tissues into the airway, as reported in Sleep Apnea: A New Approach to an Emergent Problem by Master Herbalist Steven Frank, of Nature’s Rite. For some, there’s no indication of potential problems when they are awake as the tissues remain in their normal state and the throat doesn’t close off during the day or when relaxing or resting, but then they can experience an obstruction problem when trying to go to sleep. Instead of resorting to surgery to remove neck tissue or using a machine to force air into lungs, try a natural, herbal solution that has been used for thousands of years. Lobelia acts as a respiratory stimulant and maintains deep, steady breathing through the stage 2 sleep period. Thyme improves the ability of the lungs to exchanges CO2 for oxygen. While Chamomile and Cramp Bark helps the upper trapezius muscles to relax supporting better nerve transmission. For more information, call 888-465-4404 or visit MyNaturesRite.com See ad, page 16. Reflexology and Zzzzs: From Restless to Relaxed We all know that sleep is important, but many people don’t know that it’s essential for physical, mental, emotional and behavioral health. Sleep is actually a biological drive and necessary for growth, healing and restoration. Unfortunately, most people don’t get enough. Lack of sleep has serious effects on our brain’s ability to function. Many people sleep very lightly during restless nights, which can impair cognitive function the next day, make concentration more difficult and shorten the attention span. Reflexology can reduce restlessness and improve the quality of sleep by relieving anxiety, fear, pain and stress. Professional reflexologists, through the power of attuned touch, access the nervous system through reflex points on the feet (and hands) and can significantly reduce tension, thereby allowing the energy to flow evenly throughout the body. A mindful focus on the toes, along the base of the forefoot and along the inner foot is important. The result is a grounding and calming experience. Clients have reported that in an hour’s session they feel like they have had a full night’s sleep. In an increasingly complex world, it is essential to take steps to rest and allow the deep surrender of sleep. Gluten and the Gut

microbes, and can affect the immune system that resides there. For those with a gluten sensitivity, the components that gluten is broken down into signal the GALT that they are problems and it reacts by creating antibodies to fight the problem. This in turn creates an attack on the enzymes that break down gluten, causing a loss of nutrition absorption. Although this starts as a gut problem, it quickly affects the rest of the body. Gluten can cause the cells in the intestines to produce a protein called zonulin, which breaks down the connectivity in the intestinal walls. This allows anything in the intestines to leak into the bloodstream and travel

throughout the body, causing the myriad of seemingly unrelated symptoms that often accompany gluten intolerance. What can we do in addition to avoiding gluten to help maintain gut/ immune system health? Eat more prebiotic containing foods (such as asparagus, garlic and bananas), avoid antibiotics unless there is a serious need for them and exercise regularly (which can increase the beneficial gut microbes). Many holistic doctors also feel strongly that even if we have not been diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity, avoiding it is very beneficial to gut health and can aid in promoting a healthy immune system. With cold and flu season just around the corner, it’s a good time to be considering the condition of our immune system. It’s no secret that a weak immune system can leave us open to every stray germ that comes our way, and for those who work with the public or have small children, the chance of exposure is almost unavoidable. A strong immune system can be our best friend during the winter season, but what can we do to help strengthen it? It turns out that 70 to 80 percent of our immune system resides in the gut, which is called gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), so it makes sense that the health of our digestive tract plays a huge role in keeping our whole body healthy. The digestive tract is the home of millions of microbes, called a microbiome, that keep everything in working order. Not surprisingly, what we eat has an effect on our microbiome. Gluten specifically can cause changes in our gut bacteria, including a reduction in some types of important November 2019

Cordyceps, a fungus that grows on caterpillars high in the Himalayas, has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a rejuvenating and performance-enhancing medicine. The latest Korean research shows it also boosts the immune system. Scientists tested 79 healthy adults for eight weeks, giving 39 of them 1,680 milligrams of cordyceps a day in capsules and the other 40 were given a placebo. The cordyceps produced a 38 percent increase in natural killer (NK) cell activity, which plays a role in immunity by detecting and killing virus-infected cells, tumor cells and abnormal cells.

A meta-review of 37 studies that included 7,887 mothers giving birth found that an injection of oriental motherwort (Leonurus japonicus), a Traditional Chinese Medicine herb used for thousands of years, decreased blood loss and other adverse events during birth at a minimal cost with few side effects.

Take Rosemary to Boost Memory, Mood and Sleep The common kitchen herb rosemary holds promise for insomniacs. Iranian researchers tested 68 university students for a month, giving them either 1,000 milligrams of rosemary herb each day or a placebo. An Introduction to Chinese Herbs by Nathan Anderson

C

hinese medicine is one of the oldest medical systems. Its written history dates back 2,500 years, and there is strong evidence it has been practiced for over 5,000 years. In the U.S., the most familiar modality within Chinese medicine is acupuncture. But acupuncture is just one of many tools within the traditional Chinese medical system. Most acupuncturists in the U.S. have extensive training in the use of Chinese herbs—typically at least 450 hours dedicated specifically to this modality. The Chinese pharmacopeia consists of thousands of herbs, of which about 500 are in common use in the U.S. The vast majority are plants, with a handful of animal and mineral substances used as well. Chinese herbs are categorized in a highly organized system. There are 28 categories of herbs, based on their primary clinical actions and indications. Herbs are also classified according to their flavor, effect on organs and meridians, energetic temperature, dosage and cautions/contraindications for use. Chinese herbology also recognizes which herbs pair well together, having synergistic 18

Tucson Edition

effects for specific therapeutic properties. When an acupuncturist and herbalist makes a diagnosis, this informs not only which points should be used for acupuncture, but also which herbs would best treat a specific pain or illness. Herbal formulas are constructed with a hierarchy of ingredients, with dosages and herbs selected to target different aspects of the patient’s condition. The herbs work in conjunction with the acupuncture, reinforcing the treatment’s effects. Acupuncture sends an energetic message to impact physiology, while the herbs adjust the body’s biochemistry. There are Chinese herbal formulations to treat a wide variety of conditions, ranging from pain in various regions of the body, to other medical issues including digestive disorders, cardiovascular problems, respiratory conditions, dermatology, gynecology, colds and flu and more. Any organ and physiological process can be addressed with Chinese herbs. The most common traditional form of preparing Chinese herbs is an aqueous extraction called a decoction—a long, slow simmer of herbs in water, yielding a con-

NaturalTucson.com

centrated medicinal liquid. The Chinese word for this method of preparation is tang . Interestingly, this is the same word in Chinese as soup. Much as a good soup consists of multiple ingredients cooked together for a period of time, yielding a complex flavor profile, the same is true of Chinese herbs. Most Chinese herbal formulas consist of at least four ingredients, with many having 15 or more ingredients. With over 500 herbs in common use, the number of combinations possible is nearly limitless, with numerous formulations to treat varied medical conditions. All reputable vendors of Chinese herbs in the U.S. carefully select their products from producers that adhere to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), ensuring the safety and quality of the herbs. GAP standards include minimal use of pesticides, proper soil maintenance, crop rotation, clean irrigation and proper harvesting and storage. GAP also governs safe and humane treatment of livestock. All vendors refrain from using endangered or threatened species (animals and plants) as identified in the international treaty known as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. While rhinoceros horn was used centuries ago to treat severe fevers, modern herbalists will choose other legal and ethical ingredients. Unfortunately, there are very few certified organic Chinese herbs, as organic farming in China is a nascent industry. The few existing organic farms in China only produce food products. Several Chinese herbs are grown in the U.S. (some certified organic), but most Chinese herbs thrive in climates and soils specific to Asia. As organic farming gains prevalence in Asia, more organic herbal options will surely become available. While a decoction of raw ingredients is the preferred traditional form of herb preparation (and raw Chinese herbs are widely available in the U.S.), most acupuncturists and herbalists in the U.S. use concentrated extracts of the herbs. This is primarily because cooking a decoction is time-consuming (typically 30-45 minutes), and can be logistically complex as different herbs require different preparation pro-

cesses. Most herbal extracts are available in a 5:1 concentration (i.e. 1 gram of extract equals 5 grams of decocted raw herb). Extracts are commonly available in powder, tincture and pill form. There are also syrups, suppositories and topical liniments, ointments, balms and plasters made from herbal extracts. These extracts simplify use for the patient, eliminating the complex cooking and preparation methods, resulting in greater compliance. When Chinese herbs are processed into extracts, the companies producing the products must also adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). GMP require that the processing be done with pharmaceutical-grade equipment in a clean environment, and that product quality, potency and purity are consistent and trackable for each production batch. All major Chinese herb vendors in the U.S. test their products using mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography to ensure quality of their product. Both the FDA, and its Chinese equivalent, the National Medical Products Administration, have GMP standards, and most herb companies have to adhere to both sets of standards (and also other regions such as Europe, if their products are sold there as well). In short, Chinese herbal products in the U.S. are safe, pure and consistent—certified by multiple international governmental agencies. While an herbal extract pill is certainly convenient, and culturally consistent with the American norm of taking medicine, it does have its limitations. Pills are

not absorbed as efficiently as decoctions or loose powder extracts dissolved in hot water. Pills also do not allow for customized formulations that are specific to the unique presentations of an individual. But, as anyone who has consumed Chinese herbal liquids knows, the flavor can be unpleasant, and a pill bypasses this barrier to compliance.

All reputable vendors of Chinese herbs in the U.S. carefully select their products from producers that adhere to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), ensuring the safety and quality of the herbs.

An herbal pharmacy may stock dozens of formulas in pills and topical liniments—“off-the-shelf products for off-the-shelf conditions”. In many cases, the traditional prepared formulas match the clinical needs of the patient. Timetested traditional formulas gained their status based on their common applicability, but complex or uncommon clinical cases require custom herbal formulations, which are compiled with powdered extracts of individual herbs. The patient dissolves these powders in hot water, and drinks them as a medicinal beverage. This allows the herbal pharmacist to adjust the ingredients, tailoring the formula as the clinical presentation evolves. Simple acute cases

typically require only a few days or weeks of herbs, while complex and chronic cases may require months of herbal therapy. For patients that balk at the flavor of herbal beverages, consider the analogy of coffee. Most people, when they first try coffee, find the flavor to be bitter and unpleasant—yet many develop a palate for it over time. The same concept applies to Chinese herbs, especially if the formula is appropriate for one’s condition. The body craves what’s good for it. Most people eventually accommodate to the flavor of Chinese herbs. In the interim, strategies to mask the flavor such as adding honey, or chasing the herbs with apple juice or a spoonful of peanut butter, can neutralize the flavor. Whether it be to simply boost energy, improve sleep or treat a specific medical issue, seek an acupuncturist and herbalist who is trained and certified in Chinese herbal medicine. Inquire about their education and experience in treating a specific concern. ZENFUL EATING Mindful Meals in Quiet Gratitude by April Thompson

I

n Zen monasteries, the head cook (known as the tenzo) is one of the most important positions a monk can hold; Eihei Dogen, founder of Soto Zen, one of the longest-established sects of Buddhism, said this is “because the position requires wholehearted practice.” In the 13th-century volume Instructions for the Zen Cook, Dogen wrote, “In preparing food, it is essential to be sincere and to respect each ingredient, regardless of how coarse or fine.” Rituals around food are an important element of Buddhism, as with many spiritual traditions. But we don’t have to be a Buddhist or a practiced meditator to learn how to cook more mindfully, enjoy meals more fully and eat in better balance. “Cooking can be a meditation. We cook with all our senses: We taste, touch and listen to determine if the pan is hot enough. You just have to be mindful,” says Jean-Philippe Cyr, author of The Buddhist Chef: 100 Simple, Feel-Good Vegan Recipes. “Cooking is an act of love and generosity, so cooking should be done with care—taking the time to consider the ingredients and overall flavors of the meal, storing the vegetables properly, paying attention while you chop. These things are the foundation of a great meal,” says Gesshin Claire Greenwood, an ordained 20

Bays, a Zen Buddhist priest and co-abbot of Great Vow Zen Monastery, in Clatskanie, Oregon. “This country is in an epidemic of out-of-balance eating. People are stressed out and fearful about eating, but cooking and eating should be inherently pleasurable human activities,” says Bays, the author of Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food. “In Zen practice, mindful rituals help us learn to be present and peaceful during meals.” Mindful eating is not about restrictions, but rather about curiosity and investigation—an adventure for the senses, says Bays. “Research shows that diets don’t work, as they rely on external sources rather than helping you to go inward and tap into the innate wisdom of your body.”

Zen priest in San Francisco. Greenwood trained in Buddhist monasteries in Japan for more than five years, experiences she draws from in her recent memoir and cookbook Just Enough: Vegan Recipes and Stories from Japan’s Buddhist Temples. While vegetarianism is encouraged in all schools of Buddhism and most monasteries abstain from meat, it is not a strict requirement. Cyr, a vegan and practicing Buddhist of 20 years, takes seriously the concept of ahimsa, or “do no harm”, as a chef. “Veganism and Buddhism share the common value of compassion—compassion towards animals, as well as the Earth. Climate change caused by meat consumption causes a lot of harm, too,” says Cyr, of rural Quebec, Canada. The “middle way” is an important Buddhist principle in the kitchen—striking the balance between indulgence and deprivation—the “just enough” in Greenwood’s cookbook title. “It’s important to use enough salt so that the food tastes good, but not so much that it’s overpowering. When we shop for food or eat a meal, we can also pay attention to when we’ve had enough,” she says.

Rushing through meals mindlessly, we’ve become deaf to our body’s own signals of satiety, says Bays. “Go to the supermarket when you’re hungry, and head to the perimeter where the real food is and stop and ask your body, ‘Would you like oranges? Would broccoli be good for us?’ Tune into your cellular hunger,” she says. At the Great Vow Zen Monastery, the first morning meal is conducted in silence, along “with a prayer to bring gratitude for the food and to all living beings whose life flows to us in our food,” says Bays, adding that research shows ceremonies and moments of reflection lead to more mindful, healthy eating. “Instead of talking on the phone, try cooking in silence. Drawing your awareness to details like the smell of basil, the color of tomato and the touch of the spoon brings so much richness to the act of cooking,” says Bays. Such a focus leads to a sense of appreciation for the ingredients of meals and life, says Myoju Erin Merk, a priest at the San Francisco Zen Center. “Making a meal is an active extension of our ‘sitting’ (meditation) practice.”

Cooking Like a Zen Master photo by by Samuel Joubert

1 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 Tbsp maple syrup 1 Tbsp olive oil Garnish: Pumpkin seeds Microgreens

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Place the sweet potato and figs in a baking dish.

Buddha Bowl

Cookbook author Jean-Phillippe Cyr says, “I love bowl recipes: they’re generous and colorful, and they let us get creative. Layer grains or cereals, vegetables, legumes and dressing, and voilà! That’s all there is to it.” Pumpkin seeds are an incredible source of protein, and tahini contains more protein than milk. Healthy cooks will be sure to keep this tahini dressing recipe close, because they can use it in everything. Yields one bowl 1 sweet potato, peeled and diced 2 dried figs, sliced 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt, to taste 1½ cups cooked quinoa ¼ cup frozen shelled edamame, cooked For the dressing: 1 (¾-inch) piece fresh ginger, minced 1 clove garlic, minced Pinch of sea salt 2 Tbsp tahini

Drizzle with oil, then season with salt and bake for 30 minutes. Place the ginger, garlic and salt in a mortar (preferred) or blender, then mash the ingredients together. Transfer to a bowl and add the tahini, soy sauce, lemon juice, maple syrup and oil. Stir to combine. Place the sweet potatoes and figs in a large serving bowl. Add the quinoa and edamame. Drizzle with the dressing and garnish. Serve immediately. Tip: For those that can’t digest raw garlic, don’t use it, or cook it before adding it to the dressing.

Hearty Moroccan Soup

“This is hands-down my favorite soup,” says Cyr. “It reminds me of a Moroccan tajine, a savory stew made with vegetables and spices. The name tajine comes from the particular type of roasting dish in which Moroccan stews are cooked. There’s

no need to buy any special equipment to make this recipe, but you will want to hunt down harissa, a North African chili paste you can find in most grocery stores nowadays. Be careful, though—it’s hot!” Yields 8 to 10 servings 3 Tbsp olive oil 1 onion, diced 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp celery seeds 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp dried oregano ½ tsp turmeric 1 clove garlic, minced 8 cups vegetable broth 1 (28 oz) can diced tomatoes 1 (19 oz) can green lentils, rinsed and drained 2 yellow-fleshed potatoes, peeled and diced 2 carrots, diced 1 Tbsp harissa paste 3 bay leaves Salt and black pepper, to taste In a large pot over medium heat, heat the oil, then add the onions and sweat for 4 minutes. Add the mustard seeds, celery seeds, cumin, coriander, oregano, turmeric and garlic. Continue cooking for 2 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Lower the heat, cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Remove the bay leaves. Serve hot. Excerpted with permission from The Buddhist Chef, by Jean-Phillippe Cyr.

NATURE BASICS: HISTORY 101 Brought to you by Earth’s Healing

H

ow many people take the time to research the prescription medication that doctors prescribe? What’s in the medicine? How was it manufactured? What’s the history of the drug? Perhaps it’s time to start asking the tough questions. What’s in our medicine? The answers are confusing, using words and ingredients that are difficult to spell, pronounce and understand. Marijuana is a natural plant medicine that is pretty cut and dry as far as what’s in it and where it comes from. One of the first mass produced drugs was aspirin. It began to be manufactured starting in the late 1890s, and by 1925 pharmacies quickly took over the role of apothecaries, which usually carried numerous marijuana products. Early pharmacies carried on the practice and sold marijuana as

medicine. Drug development and manufacturing can only be traced as far back as the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although 130 years seems like a long time, the history and ingredients of pharmaceuticals is young compared to the age of marijuana use and the thousands of years of research and documentation that records it as medicinal. The use of the cannabis plant can be traced back to primitive times, about 8000 BCE, according to the article, “10,000-Year History of Marijuana use in the World”, published in Ancient Holistic Health. During archeological digs in ancient villages in Taiwan, rope and twine made from hemp were used in making pottery. In 6000 BCE cannabis seeds and its oil were used as food throughout China. According to the same article, the first recorded use of cannabis as

a medicine dates back to 2737 BCE. An ancient Chinese legend states that the father of Chinese medicine, Emperor Shen Nung, discovered the three mainstays to Chinese medicine: marijuana, ginseng and ephedra. The history of medicinal marijuana has a long and worldwide presence. Throughout the ages, marijuana has been used medicinally, dating back to prerecorded times. The Rh-Ya is one of the oldest medicinal references and was discovered in the 15th century BCE. It outlines a number of medical properties and uses for marijuana. It was used as an anesthetic, a treatment for eye problems (glaucoma), inflammation, gout, rheumatism and malaria. Marijuana has been used as a medicine longer than it’s been illegal. Understanding the research, development and manufacturing of marijuana isn’t too difficult of a task. Plants can be traced back to the seeds that were used to grow the plant. It can be traced back to the actual farm where it was grown, and the plants used for medicinal purposes can be traced back to the harvest and packaging date. There are no secret ingredients added to the medicine produced by marijuana. It’s safe, natural and is becoming a powerhouse as an alternative treatment. It grows wild in places around the world, and according to an interview with Carl Sagan in 1977, modern civilization only came to be because of agriculture. It wasn’t until humans began to cultivate crops in 10,000 BCE that civilizations sprang up. Sagan proposed that the marijuana plant was the very first cultivated plant. Marijuana is grown like most fruits, vegetables and other crops, and it can be compared to farm-to-table products, which are known to be the best for health and well-being. Why has it taken so long to bring this product back into the medicine cabinet? It’s all about education and getting people to understand the ancient history of one of the planet’s most popular plants. Are Our Emotions Blessing or Destroying Our Health? by Cynthia M. Spencer

O

besity is a leading preventable cause of death across the globe, and the number affected is steadily increasing. Obesity and emotions are

tied together in sometimes devious and unconscious ways. We can reduce obesity globally when we learn to recognize what leads us there.

Understanding our emotions and giving them direction and healthy outlets can do far more than anything to lessen the excess pounds we carry through our lives. One by one, we can make a difference in lowering this very controllable disease. Our emotions initiate action. They provide us with joy, bliss and beautiful experiences of life. They can also produce confusion and lead us astray. Mindfulness may be an overused word in today’s world, but it is the key to helping us control our own eating habits that lead us down the slippery slope to obesity. Here are some areas where we can invest mindfully to help reduce our excess weight or prevent it from rising. • Responding to others when we disagree or just being still, instead of reacting. • Being aware of going along with the crowd and needing to belong. • Eating when we really aren’t hungry. It’s a habit. • Making the assumption that someone will be “hurt” if we refuse their food or don’t eat cake at a friend’s birthday party. • Eating when we are tired and pushing ourselves to stay up at night. • Just plain eating out of habit, like popcorn at a movie, or three kinds of pie for Thanksgiving. We convince ourselves we need or want it. Angry or fearful minds tend to cling to negative emotions and the mind mistakenly thinks that food will make us feel better. We just need to pay attention to what we are feeling and thinking and doing. Learn about the foods that make the body healthy and eat them; leave the rest. If we are mindful that we are the only ones who can make our self an integrated and healthy being, we can be an example and make a difference to global obesity. Cynthia M. Spencer, MBA, MDiv is author of Losing Me, Finding Me. She has lost 140 pounds and is currently teaching classes on changing habits. Herbs for the Gut

A

by Sheila Shea

n early introduction to herbs for the gut came in the 1970s in the form of Raw Vegetable Juices by Norman Walker, which outlines giving the gut a rest and feeding in super nutrition in the form of raw juices. The direction of raw juice now is chlorophyll, the green substance we see in spinach, celery and kale, and a reduction of sweet vegetables such as carrot and beet. The chlorophyll-based wheat grass is healing to the gut and liver, not to mention purifying for the blood. Colon hydrotherapy may be used to add nutrition to the body through the gut. Colon hydrotherapists may get requests to add substances to incoming water into the colon. Additives used are

wheat grass, coffee, oregano and the famous anti-cancer formula by the late John Christopher, a famous American herbalist. Some people use regular castor oil packs, described in Edgar Cayce’s book Palma Christi. It breaks up waste in the gut and liver or wherever a person places the pack on their body. A great number of people are also using laxatives on a daily basis. The key laxative herbs are senna, cascara, turkey rhubarb and aloe. The first three were originally used in the colonies as a clothing dye. When people take these laxatives on a regular basis, it stains the gut brown-black, a condition called melanosis coli. The condition is harmless, however it shows up in colonoscopies. The downside of overusing laxatives is the depletion of electrolytes, a serious micronutrient loss. According to a new study, 88 percent of the public has metabolic syndrome. More people are choosing to detox and heal their gut with parasite, liver and bowel cleanses. The major bowel cleansing herbs are psyllium, bentonite and activated charcoal. The major parasite clearing herbs are green hulls of black walnut, wormwood and clove. Given the epidemic of Lyme disease and mold, people are tested for toxic metals. Herbs that draw out metals are cilantro and chlorella, a fresh water algae cultivated in Korea for thousands of years. The key herb to kill Candida is oregano. However, in order for the Candida to truly calm down, one has to reduce sugars. For a simple way to soothe the gut, try teas made with peppermint, ginger and chamomile. Sheila Shea, MA, is a colon hydrotherapist and Director of Intestinal Health Institute, in Tucson. The Science and Magic of Essential Oils by Danielle Dvorak

I

n the Temple of Isis in Egypt, a sacred room portrays a ritual utilizing essential oils, called “Cleansing the Flesh and Blood of Evil Deities”. The ancient Egyptians believed a soul could not move on to its afterlife if it held emotional baggage. King Tut’s tomb contained enough alabaster jars to hold 350 liters of essential oil and grave robbers chose to steal the oils first instead of all the other treasures. Since that time, essential oil usage to effect emotions had been relatively unknown until recently. In 1989, scientists discovered that the amygdala gland, within the limbic system of the brain, plays a major role in storing and releasing emotions and trauma. It is therefore referred to as the “seat of our emotions”. The amygdala gland is the gatekeeper through which all sensory data to the brain are processed. The sensory data goes directly to the amygdala gland, where it is determined if this data needs to be sent to the adrenal glands first (for fight or flight) or on to the brain for further processing. It essentially processes knowledge about stimuli and situations that are of special importance to our survival. The amygdala is programmed to react without benefit of input from the thinking part of the brain. Thus, when we experience a traumatic situation, fear or any other unpleasant circumstances, it is recorded in 26

Tucson Edition

the amygdala first and then sent to the rest of the body (i.e. adrenal glands or thinking brain) to be processed. Certain smells, like bread baking or a particular perfume, can take us right to a memory and the feelings associated with it. Scents access the limbic system, and thus the amygdala, like a key in a lock, which is the seat of our emotions. Sesquiterpenes, found in high levels in essential oils such as Frankincense and Sandalwood, help to increase the oxygen in the limbic system of the brain, which in turn “unlocks” the DNA and allows emotional baggage to be released from cellular memory. Emotions have been found to be encoded within the DNA of our cells and passed on from generation to generation. Research has proven that emotional behavior patterns can be “locked” within families. Organ transplant recipients repeatedly have reported strange memories and desires, which further substantiates that emotions are stored in the physical body and encoded in the DNA of the cells. More recently, studies at New York University proved that the amygdala gland (the gland in the limbic system of the brain that stores and releases trauma in the body) does not respond to sound or sight or touch, but only releases trauma through the sense of smell. Sounds like magic.

As participants in Biosphere 1, we are intrinsically connected to all plant life and it is connected to us. Research shows that plants actually manufacture chemical compounds that have a wide variety of healthful uses in human beings. How fun is that? And, a large percentage of the pharmaceuticals of today have been based on plants and their essential oils that have similar “healing” qualities. An example of this is Valium, which is synthesized artificially, but chemically similar to and based on Valerian. Both are muscle relaxers that also calm the nervous system. Most essential oils are made by distilling (reducing down and concentrating) plant material and drawing out just the natural oils. Not to be confused with fatty oils, such as olive, almond and jojoba, essential oils are considered “volatile oils” and are a completely different category than fatty oils. Examples of essential oils that are true steam-distilled products include those from trees (Balsam, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Spruce), Lavender, Geranium, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli and Lemongrass. The process of steam distilling essential oils is complex and often a combination of art and science. Different plant materials require different distillation temperatures and times, and sometimes quite a bit of finesse to create a high quality product. Other considerations in creating essential oils include: how the plant was grown (wild, organic, non-organic); how the plant has been harvested, stored and transported; how fastidious the distillation facility was in the manufacturing process, thus avoiding crosscontamination and pollutants; and how the final product has been bottled or contained, stored and again transported. At each one of these steps along the way, it’s possible for the potential quality of an essential oil to be compromised. In addition, the original plant material may have

White Lotus

been full of pesticides and herbicides, making the final product less than desirable right from the start. When buying essential oils, the rule of thumb is to know that a cheap product means a “dirty” product and an expensive oil usually means it’s clean and of a high quality. Other methods of obtaining essential oils from plants include solvent extraction and cold pressing. Solvent extraction is ideally done with a naturally-occurring solvent Flower market such as CO2 (carbon dioxide). However, more inexpensive extractions are often done with synthetically-produced solvents such as acetone and hexane. The oils resulting from solvent extraction are usually referred to as “Absolutes”. Examples of essential oils that are technically Absolutes include Rose, Jasmine, Neroli, Vanilla and Frangipani. An Absolute that is not expensive was likely produced with one of these toxic solvents. Essential oils that are cold pressed or “expressed” primarily include the citrus family—lemon, lime, grapefruit or tangerine. The peels are pressed or squeezed/expressed to extract the oils and, just like with olive or other fatty cooking oils, cold pressed, nonsolvent extraction is best. Sometimes solvents or heat are added to the pressing process to get more final product. Again, a red flag is an oil that is inexpensive in comparison to others of its type. Danielle Dvorak has used essential oils in her daily life since the 1970s. After over 30 years, and distributing for a couple of essential oil companies, she decided to become a Certified Aromatherapist in 2010. She sells her own line of essential oils, HeartScents, which are all of very high, therapeutic-grade quality. Connect at 847-323-9188 or Danielle@Replevyn.com. See ad, page 35.

hinking about trying essential oils? Whether new to oils or a longtime fan, these are some key tips for using essential oils safely and effectively.

• Before experimenting with an essential oil, become familiar with its properties, dose and precautions (via the internet). When still not sure about a condition or an oil, consult a knowledgeable specialist. • Essential oils are very concentrated. Dilute all essential oils before applying to the skin, either in a fatty oil, lotion or cream. • Do not use essential oils internally. If you must, then exercise extreme caution. • Skin reactions to essential oils can take three forms: irritation, sensitization and phototoxicity. The citrus oils will cause phototoxicity, meaning that sunlight can activate a bad reaction on the skin, so never put an undiluted citrus oil on skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight within 24 hours. • Avoid contact with eyes and mucus membranes. If an essential oil gets into the eye, do not rub it. Saturate a cotton ball with vegetable oil and wipe over the area affected. In severe instances, flood the eye area with lukewarm water for 15 minutes. • Avoid prolonged exposure without good ventilation. • Use essential oils cautiously with infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly or those with serious health problems. Diffusing is best. • Store essential oils and carrier oils properly to avoid degradation and rancidity. Air, heat and light degrade essential oils. Store essential oils in a cool, dark room and always keep tightly sealed so they don’t evaporate.

Specialized Use of Essential Oils Spotlight on Dr. Lance Morris

hen he was in Naturopathic Medical School, Dr. Lance Morris fell in love with botanical/herbal medicine. As he had the opportunity to work with patients with more serious or chronic health problems, he found that although Naturopathic treatments and natural medications helped, these methods were sometimes inadequate with more difficult patients. This led him to pursue adding parenteral—intravenous

Morris always held an abiding belief that when we fully integrated herbal medications in parenteral applications for patient care, we would see a significant improvement in health outcomes around the world. The beginning of modern pharmacology was medication derived from plant sources. This interface with plant-derived

medication was quickly modified by the pharmaceutical industry to shift the focus from plants to designer synthetic chemical analogs of plant derivatives. Thus was born modern drug therapy. “The great hope of the drug industry to solve our most pressing medical health problems has fallen short. As the drug industry has evolved, we have seen the shining promise of a new, better and healthier tomorrow falter,” says Morris. Modern medicine has ushered in the era of iatrogenic—physician induced—disease. This is the third largest cause of death in the U.S. Epidemiology has confirmed upwards of 400,000 people in the U.S. die per year as a result of physician errors. Most are drug related. By comparison, the number one cause of death, heart disease, kills about 800,000 per year and number two, cancer, kills about 600,000 per year. Let’s contrast this data relative to deaths caused by herbal products. In 2004, the FDA banned an herb called ephedra, also known as Ma Huang or Mormon Tea. At its peak in 2004, there were seven deaths attributed to the use of ephedra, an amphetamine-like stimulant. In the majority of cases of injury or death, it can be attributed to drug addicts seeking an alternative or addition to their amphetamine use. The only other herb of note is kratom. In 2018, there were about 100 deaths attrib-

No media (computers, TV, tablets, phones) for two hours before bed. Although this sounds impossible to many patients, it is actually achievable. Electronics, even with blue light filters, stimulate the brain, causing a release of neurotransmitters that negatively impact sleep. Additionally, keep devices out of the bedroom while sleeping. Sleep studies support the disturbances found in various stages of sleep from electromagnetic waves. Keep the room dark. Even small amounts of light will change brain chemistry and disturb sleep.

While it may feel hopeless at times, know that there is help, and no one is alone. The following information is not to replace a medical evaluation for underlying medical conditions affecting sleep. Once these conditions have been ruled out by a doctor, there are many natural remedies and lifestyle factors that can improve quality of sleep.

Sleep Hygiene

Our nighttime routine probably has one of the largest impacts on being able to fall asleep, as well as getting good quality sleep to feel rejuvenated in the morning. The following advice gets voted for least patient compliance, yet it gives the best results.

Magnesium deficiency is currently a public crisis because it is very common and unfortunately, most blood tests miss 90 percent of deficiencies. Magnesium is a vital nutrient, meaning it is needed for every bodily function. Being able to relax and detox are primary functions of this mineral. Deficiency symptoms vary and are widespread, but include insomnia, restless leg syndrome, anxiety, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, tension headaches/ migraines, muscle pain, PMS, vitamin D deficiency, chemical sensitivity and more. When there is a deficiency, by the end of the day, there is not enough magnesium to go around, leaving one unable to relax and get a good night’s sleep. In a supplement form, magnesium glycinate is

inexpensive and safe with a wide range of dosing, in that it can be taken throughout the day with smaller doses or taken in the evening in one larger dose. One caution with taking magnesium (especially if not the glycinate form) is the potential for “bowel tolerance”, or loose stools. In that case, one can just back off the amount they are taking.

More studies are being done on THC and CBD derived from cannabis and hemp for sleep relief. While there have been great results on the benefits of these compounds for sleep relief, it is important to note that this research is in its infancy, and there are more factors to take into consideration when looking into the research. A lot of these studies were done with isolated CBD and THC, and the methods of consumption varied. However, there were still reports of relief from insomnia, and an increased rate of falling asleep, especially when ingesting low amounts of THC and CBD (1:1 ratio). THC and CBD are cannabinoids, of which, the cannabis plant has over 100. These cannabinoids act on a system that every mammal contains, the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS has receptors throughout the body and within other systems like the central nervous system

and immune system. These receptors bind to the cannabinoids in cannabis and are activated through different methods of Alexandra Porter consumption (inhalation, ingestion, topical application). Because most of these studies were done with only one method of consumption, and with isolated cannabinoids, more studies need to be done with multiple methods of consumption, and incorporating a full, or broad-spectrum of cannabinoids, because it all works synergistically. Dr. Alexandra Porter is a Naturopathic Doctor practicing at Natural Healing Care Center in Tucson and is licensed to practice medicine in Arizona. Natural Healing Care Center has helped many patients obtain their medical marijuana cards in Arizona, and while insomnia is not on the list of qualifying conditions for the Arizona Medical Marijuana Program, many patients state that it has helped them obtain better sleep, unexpectedly. Quynn Red Mountain

uynn Red Mountain is the Animist Minister of Web of Life Animists. A branch of her ministry is to offer Soul Support for those who are students and patients of plant teachers, are considering being so, or need healing help and are searching for answers. Red Mountain has received potent and meaningful messages from visionary plants. Healings and teachings from plants have directly guided her evolution as a Spirit Bridge Practitioner. An experience with cancer in 2014 brought her into the Medical Cannabis program in Arizona.

While in her early 20s, Red Mountain experienced a plant teacher for the first time and received a clear message about the role of plant medicine in her life, and for Web of Life. A voice in her head said, “The purpose of plant teachers is to part the veil between worlds to show you where you can go and what is possible, but you have to be able to get there on your own.” A few years after this message was received, Red Mountain had a “calling” experience that began to teach her the ways of her Inner World. Due to the earlier teaching about “getting there on your own”, she cultivated a practice of traveling her inner landscapes to the sound of consistent drumbeats as her main source of revelation. Over the last 20 years, she has held space for thousands of seekers and healers in sessions and circles, using the powers of drumbeats and intention to tend their healing and intuition development. There are many similarities between visionary plant use and “journeying” to a drum for teachings, so a session, circle or ceremony with Red Mountain can help clients: decipher plant, body and soul messages; connect with ailing soul parts and ancestors; listen to the spirits of our sickness and wellness; explore the wisdom of our Inner World; and receive teachings, healings and clearings from guiding allies. Explore the roots of pain, sickness, trauma and ancestral troubles that can often cause a person to seek out healing plant medicine experiences. Feel what is ready to be healed and expand into the beauty of being a part of the sacred web of life. Quynn Red Mountain offers services for people who feel connected to the Earth and are healing their lineages, with or without assistance from the Plant Elders. Connect with Quynn at Quynn.com. Psychedelics and the Float Tank One branch of plant medicine is that of psychedelics, which have been shown to be helpful for many issues. Most people are familiar with LSD, but there are natural psychedelic drugs that can induce very healing, life-changing experiences, such as Ayahuasca or Ibogaine. For those who do not wish to use drugs or plant medicine, or who can’t for health reasons, similar benefits could be gleaned from flotation therapy. Popular podcaster and author Tim Ferriss discussed these ideas on episode 104 of The Tim Ferriss Show, “Are Psychedelic Drugs the Next Medical Breakthrough?” In the episode he talks with Dr. Martin Polanco, MD, founder and program director of Crossroads Treatment Center, based in Rosarito, Mexico (which uses Ibogaine to help addicts), and Dr. Dan Engle, MD, a psychiatrist and neurologist who combines functional medicine with integrative psychiatry to enhance regenerative health and peak performance. Engle brings up the flotation tank and its importance in not only preparing people who have never done a psychedelic, for a plant medicine ceremony and experience—but perhaps even replacing the plant medicine experience with floating for those who cannot partake of a ceremony or treatment. “I’m just about as excited about flotation therapy as I am about psychedelics,” says Engle. “Not everyone is going to do psychedelics, and it’s not in everyone’s best interest to do psychedelics.” Ferriss later says, “If you can’t handle a flotation tank, you aren’t ready to be strapped to a rocket ship you can’t turn off.” It is also recommended to get in a float tank after a transformation experience, with the intention of integrating the experience through the mind, body and spirit. People who use a float tank for the sole purpose of integration are seeing outstanding results. Kalyn Wolf is one of the most experienced people in the Southwest for Flotation Therapy. She has been floating since 1985 and in the business of Float Therapy and other healing modalities since 1986. Her center, Cloud Nine Flotation, serves many communities in Tucson and beyond. Look for These Plant-Based Natural Brighteners

S

un spots, age spots, liver spots or solar lentigines—whatever we want to call them—are dark areas of excess melanin or pigment on the face and body that have received a significant amount of sun exposure over time. These spots and patches vary in size and are harmless for the most part, although sometimes unsightly and can usually be lightened slowly with daily use of sunscreen 30 SPF and consistent home and professional skincare. It is important to appreciate that although using natural brightening products may require more time to see improvement, the likelihood of inadvertently stimulating hyperpigmentation and making the problem worse due to use of overly aggressive chemicals and treatments is greatly reduced. The skin’s process of pigment formation and deposition into young epidermal cells offers opportunities at different steps in the process in which to intervene with natural brightening agents. When looking for homecare products to help prevent new pigment formation, look for those that contain more than one of the active ingredients mentioned below.

Bearberry, with its primary active Arbutin, is known to successfully block skin’s tyrosinase activity (the enzyme precursor to melanin production), resulting in the prevention of melanin formation. It is safe for sensitive skin. Licorice root extract contains two actives, glabridin, which interferes with tyrosinase activity, and liquiritin, which helps to break up and remove existing pigment. Mulberry extract, a powerful antioxidant, also has anti-tyrosinase as well as antiaging benefits. Several varieties of mushroom are known to have skin brightening properties, with kojic acid being the principal active, derived. It too prohibits melanin production, but may irritate sensitive skin, so proceed slowly. Lactic acid, which occurs naturally in sour milk, gently hydrates the skin, removes hyperpigmentation and stimulates collagen production. Vitamin C, usually labeled as L-ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and/ or tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, is a watersoluble antioxidant that inhibits melanin, lightens hyperpigmented skin and also stimulates collagen and elastin production.

Another important skin vitamin, niacinamide or vitamin B3, helps fade age spots and balance skin tone by blocking melanin transfer to the skin. These seven natural brighteners are just a few of the plant-based pigment fighters available today. When used consistently and appropriately, along with daily use of fullspectrum 30+ SPF sunscreen, these actives may safely and effectively lift hyperpigmentation with little or no irritation or downtime. As always, an annual skin exam by a dermatologist is essential so that pre-cancerous lesions may be identified and treated promptly. In reality, going to bed is the best me-time we can have.

CHASING ZZZZZs How to Put Insomnia to Rest by Marlaina Donato

T

ossing and turning most of the night while obsessing about the need for sleep is a torture we all go through every now and then, but for the 40 percent of Americans dealing with current or chronic insomnia, it can be a regular nightmare. In fact, 50 to 70 million adults in the U.S. suffer from some form of sleep disorder, according to the American Sleep Association. The causes are multi-faceted: stress, pharmaceutical side effects, hormonal imbalances, chronic pain, anxiety and too much caffeine all fuel the insomnia loop. Add to that the overstimulation from 24/7 technology, social pressures and unresolved emotional pain, and it’s easy to see why long, hard, sleepless nights have become a worldwide epidemic. The effects are profound. Compromised sleep not only leads to decreased quality of life, malnourished relationships, a heightened risk of accidents and inferior job performance, but also lowered immunity and chronic inflammation, raising the odds of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, weight gain and diabetes. About 90 percent of people diagnosed with depression also experience sleep deprivation, and many antidepressant medications can disrupt the ability to fall asleep and dream. However, a number of natural and holistic approaches can provide lasting

40 40

Tucson Edition Edition Tucson

results without undesirable side effects. Along with tried-and-true methods like acupuncture, therapeutic massage and changes in diet and exercise, the National Sleep Foundation recommends mindful breathing and meditation. New options are emerging to help foster quality sleep, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), non-psychoactive CBD oil and lifestyle changes supporting a healthy circadian rhythm.

Body and Mind, a Tangled Web

Psychological, emotional and physical health all play a role in our ability—or inability—to get a good night’s rest. “Not sleeping well is a sign of a deeper imbalance that needs to be addressed. So, if we’re masking the problem with medication, the underlying cause remains unaddressed,” says Elina Winnel, a sleep coach who works online with clients at TheSleepExpert.com. “Insomnia is a complex issue that has psychological components, but is also affected by deeper mechanisms, including an imbalance between the two main branches of the autonomic nervous system.” The intricate connection between emotion and sleep-robbing stress hormones explains why insomniacs are often caught in an undertow of racing thoughts and preoc-

cupations. Says Winnel, “Stress has become the norm, and most people don’t even realize they’re in that state. This produces stress hormones and can prevent the natural process of sleep from occurring.” Stress also depletes vitamin B and magnesium levels necessary for quality sleep, she adds. Cindy Davies, owner of the Holistic Sleep Center, in Ferndale, Michigan, has similar views on the role emotion plays in troubled sleep patterns. “We’re chronically suppressing our feelings throughout the day. Our inability to address these emotions culminates in a night spent in bed awake with fears and worries,” she says. “Pushing ourselves to the point of exhaustion can help defend ourselves against dealing with feelings or memories, but impairs our ability to sleep restfully or restoratively.”

Resetting Inherent Rhythms

Circadian rhythm, our biological clock, is a cellular marvel that is affected by light and internal changes in temperature. Stephanie Silberman, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, explains that it’s helpful to have a circadian rhythm aligned with societal norms so that we’re sleepy at bedtime and active during daylight hours. “When a person’s circadian rhythm is delayed, they will have trouble falling

asleep at a regular bedtime, and when it’s advanced, experience sleepiness too early in the evening and then [have] early morning awakenings.” Circadian rhythm regulates digestion, cellular repair, hormones and many other functions. It also slows down the metabolism during night hours, helping us to stay asleep. “The circadian rhythm can be disrupted by many factors, including traveling to a different time zone, shift work and exposure to blue light late at night while binge-watching your favorite series,” says Winnel. Our natural hormonal rhythms are wired to release melatonin at certain times, allowing us to rest frequently during the day. Davies explains that an adult’s body is designed for periods of rest every 90 minutes. “Most people don’t have the opportunity to rest every 90 minutes, but if we were able to, we’d be going to bed in a state of rest, instead of exhaustion,” she says. Our bodies start producing melatonin around 9 p.m., when we should already be winding down, but too often we push

ourselves to stay up to watch TV or have “me-time”, says Davies. “In reality, going to bed is the best me-time we can have.” Herbalist and licensed psychotherapist Jenn J. Allen, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, adds, “People spend up to 10 hours a day on electronic devices, which directly impacts melatonin production and stimulates the fight-or-flight response system in the brain.”

Two Sides of Every Brain

Smartphones and social media have piled even more on our plate, even if we enjoy them. “We’re expected to be constantly ‘on’ and reachable 24/7,” observes Winnel. “This leads to an excessive reliance on our sympathetic nervous system and difficulty switching brainwave states from beta— associated with alertness—to theta and delta, which we experience during sleep. Through practice and specific exercises, it can become easier for us to reach the state of mind needed to nod off.” To support healthier sleep patterns, Winnel emphasizes the importance of using both hemispheres of the brain while awake. “Particularly in our professional

lives, logical and rational processes are rewarded, while creativity is seen as optional. This can cause a chronic imbalance in the way we use the two hemispheres of our brain. Optimal sleep requires equalized functioning in the neurological structures that are unique to each hemisphere.” Mindful breathing and alternate-nostril yogic breathwork can also bring harmony to both hemispheres of the brain and promote deep relaxation.

Promising Plant Allies

Chronic pain can also prevent sound sleep. Allen stresses, “It’s important to understand what is actually causing pain and what type of pain it is. Some chronic pain comes from postural issues or injuries, so massage, chiropractic or gentle movement like yoga can help to drastically reduce the intensity of pain.” Identifying nutritional deficiencies and supporting the nervous system is also key. “Plants work both physiologically and energetically. Gentle nervine herbs like oats or chamomile can help to soothe the nervous system, and are effective for

Learning New Tricks

Many sleep-seeking people are reaping the benefits from cognitive behavioral therapy supplemental medication. A meta-analysis published in The Journal of the American Medical Association in 2015 shows that CBT-I can resolve insomnia for 35 percent of people with sleeplessness linked to existing medical and psychiatric conditions such as fibromyalgia or PTSD.

children and teens. Adaptogenic plants are known historically for helping the body to resist physical, chemical or biological stresses. Tulsi and ashwagandha, when taken consistently, can be useful in helping adults to combat stress,” Allen says, reminding us to also check with a healthcare professional to avoid contraindications. Going for that extra cup of coffee during the day or pouring a drink or two in the evening are habits that only exacerbate sleep issues. “Caffeine suppresses our body’s ability to feel tired, not by giving us energy, but by increasing the production of adrenaline and suppressing the production of melatonin. Alcohol, like some prescription medications, can interfere with our ability to fall asleep, sleep deeply and experience dreaming states,” cautions Davies. CBD oil derived from the cannabis plant is an effective pain-reducer and helps to regulate healthy sleep patterns. Allen CBT-I helps to change long-held patterns. “CBT includes keeping sleep logs, improving sleep hygiene, learning ways to decrease anxiety and how to associate the bed as a place where we sleep well, instead of the maladaptive thinking that it’s a place to toss and turn,” says Silberman. CBT can also be helpful for chronic pain and other physical problems when underlying issues are treated in conjunction. A good night’s rest is indeed possible. ENOUGH FOR ALL In Pursuit of Grateful Living

G

by Brother David Steindl-Rast

rateful living is the awareness that we stand on holy ground— always—in touch with mystery. Jewish sages interpret the words of Genesis 3:5 in a way that is of great relevance to grateful living. “Take off your shoes; the ground on which you stand is holy ground.” The soles of your shoes are leather—dead animal skin. Take off the deadness of being-used-to-it and your live souls will feel that you are standing on holy ground, wherever you are. It is pretty evident that greed, oppression and violence have led us to a point of self-destruction. Our survival depends on a radical change; if the gratitude movement grows strong and deep enough, it may bring about this necessary change. Grateful living brings in place of greed, sharing; in place of oppression, respect; and in place of violence, peace. Who does not long for a world of sharing, mutual respect and peace? Exploitation springs from greed and a sense of scarcity. Grateful living makes us aware that there is enough for all. Thus, it leads to a sense of sufficiency and a joyful willingness to share with others. Oppression is necessary if we want to exploit others. The more power you have, the more efficiently you can exploit those

below you and protect yourself against those above you. But grateful people live with a sense of sufficiency—they need not exploit others—thus, oppression is replaced by mutual support and by equal respect for all. Violence springs from the root of fear—fear that there may not be enough for all, fear of others as potential competitors, fear of foreigners and strangers. But the grateful person is fearless. Thereby, she cuts off the very root of violence. Out of a sense-of-enough, she is willing to share, and thereby tends to eliminate the unjust distribution of wealth that creates the climate for violence. Fearlessly, she welcomes the new and strange, is enriched by differences and celebrates variety. Grateful eyes look at whatever is as if they had never seen it before and caress it as if they would never see it again. This is a most realistic attitude, for every moment is indeed unique. Arnica. Commonly used for dental pain, sore throat, insect bites, pain, swelling and bruising, arnica is ideal for chapped skin and acne. Highly efficacious and famously fragrant. German Chamomile. Able to promote overall skin health in many ways, German chamomile soothes skin dryness and rashes, speeds healing and is especially effective for tired eyes. Blue Cypress. Sweet yet woodsy with a citrus quality. Used in topical skin care, blue cypress has been used to relax nerves, heal skin wounds and infections, detoxify the skin, reduce acne, boost capillary circulation and tighten the skin. Frankincense. Strongly protective to the skin, and to the nervous system when inhaled. Fragrant, uplifting and nourishing to the skin. Offers anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, antibacterial, antiseptic, astringent, balancing and moisturizing properties. Rosemary. The Benefits of Essential Oils and Terpenes iLAVA Hemp Touch

A

t The Downtown Dispensary, every jar of the new iLAVA Hemp Touch contains the same gel formula of iLAVA Touch that customers know and love, but with a few new changes. In addition to the three primary essential oils, iLAVA Hemp Touch contains additional therapeutic essential oils and 550 milligrams of CBD cannabinoids from full-spectrum hemp oil. Research and development efforts were directed at creating a fast acting product that incorporates all-natural ingredients with proven therapeutic benefits. The evidence-based blend is the result of years of diligent research by clinical formulators and aromatherapists.

Oils are Essential

The three main essential oils used in iLAVA Hemp Touch are Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum), Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) and Mango Ginger (Curcuma amada). These oils produce benefits including: being anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial and antioxidant; soothing the skin; protecting the skin; helping with allergies, acne, skin healing, inflammation, infections and sleep problems; and calming. Besides the three primary essential oils, iLAVA Hemp Touch also contains calendula, arnica, German chamomile, blue cypress, frankincense, rosemary, peppermint and lavender. These oils have countless benefits, but let’s look at a few. Calendula. An ancient elixir for the skin used to reduce rashes and other irritations, calendula essential oils are anti-inflammatory and antibacterial to help maintain good health of the skin. 44

Peppermint. Stimulating, aromatic and medicinally potent, it has been used to alleviate all types of health problems when consumed. In skin care, peppermint oil is a hydrator, brightener, toner and acne reducer. Lavender. There are many varieties of lavender, however this type is used for anxiety, low mood, insomnia, hair loss, bacterial infections, acne and other skin disorders. Also acts as an insect repellant, anti-inflammatory, wound healer and may even reduce scarring.

What Are Terpenes?

Like volatile oils extracted from other plants, the essential oils of hemp are highly fragrant, and rich with phytocompounds. Also known as terpenes, or terpenoids, many fragrances of hemp are included in the iLAVA Hemp Touch formula. iLAVA Hemp Touch includes carefully selected hemp-derived terpenoids as well as terpenes from other plants. Overall, terpenes boost the scent profile and bioactivity of CBD molecules by stimulating blood flow and other actions. The terpenes offer effects such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal and analgesic. Every jar of iLAVA Hemp Touch contains five terpenes: chamazulene (effective skin protector against stress, age-related breakdown and cellular degeneration), sabinene (woodsy, spicy scent), camphor (popular insect repellant, commonly used in cosmetics for its ability to ward off skin problems), beta-myrcene (calming, antispasmodic, found in lemongrass and hops) and beta-pinene (responsible for piney fragrance, found in pine trees, anti-proliferative). Moe Asnani is Director of The Downtown Dispensary and D2 Dispensary, in Tucson, where iLAVA Hemp Touch is available for purchase. Connect at 520-838-0492 or TheDowntownDispensary. com. quarter cup daily per 20 pounds of the pet’s weight is the rule of thumb,” says Osborne. She counsels against serving Fido onion, garlic, corn or mushroom sprouts. Peas, sunflowers, radishes, alfalfa and clover are suggested; they are all tasty and easy to grow.

Cats

Birds

Notorious for being picky eaters, cats might balk at sprouts being added to their regular diet. Rather than upsetting the status quo, grow sprouts like alfalfa or barley on a handy windowsill for grazing. “My cats prefer self-serve,” observes veterinarian Carol Osborne, owner of the Chagrin Falls Veterinary Center & Pet Clinic, in Ohio. “Now they leave my house plants alone.” Both cats and dogs may show improved gastric intestinal health as a result.

Dogs Dogs are more accepting of new content in their food bowl. “Add just a few sprouts so a dog gets used to the slightly bitter taste. Once acclimated, one-eighth to one-

“We encourage people to make their own sprouts. It’s easy to get quality seeds for legumes or grains from Whole Foods, BobsRedMill. com or Nuts.com,” says Ann Brooks, president of the all-volunteer Phoenix Landing Foundation, in Asheville, North Carolina. They provide educational activities and facilitate adoption of birds, from parakeets to macaws. Sprouts from the store can be risky, because of bacteria, she cautions. “If not growing your own, the only one I recommend is the organic crunchy mix from

SunnyCreekFarm.com. Be sure to get the freshest date possible.” “One of my favorite sprouts is mung beans, because they appear in two days or less. Birds like the crunch,” says Brooks. “Sprouts are safe to leave in the cage all day because they are live foods.”

Horses When adding sprouts to a horse’s regular diet, it’s important to balance the intake. “A lot of barns feed forage three times a day. I know of a couple that feed one meal of sprouts and the other two of hay,” says Clair Thunes, Ph.D., a consulting equine nutritionist with Summit Equine Nutrition in Sacramento, California. “Several companies sell systems for large-scale growing.” The sprouts grow with matted roots in what is called a biscuit, weighing about 18 pounds. Difficult to mix with other feed, the biscuits are fed separately, roots and all. “Because of sporadic drought conditions, the idea of growing your own fodder

became more popular, thinking it might make forage supply more dependable and possibly cheaper after initial startup costs,” Thunes explains. “Owners have a sense of control over what the horse eats, there’s less reliance on a supplier and the seeds are less expensive than hay. Due to moisture and nutritional differences, you can’t swap sprouts and hay pound for pound. It’s best to consult a veterinarian or nutritionist.” Sprouts contain a lot of moisture and have an inverted calcium phosphorus ratio that has to be accounted for she says. Horses enjoy barley, sunflower and flax sprouts for variety. The high moisture content may help reduce the risk of intestinal impaction and resulting colic.

Good for All “Sprouts are a healthy form of nutrition and a hip way for both pets and people to enjoy greens,” says Osborne. “They’re a great go-to powerhouse of nutrition, often more nutritious than the adult plant.” Connect with freelance writer Sandra Murphy at StLouisFreelanceWriter@mindspring.com.

Sprouting Tips 4 Always use organic seeds. SproutHouse.com and Rareseeds.com are additional sources. 4 Seeds sprout in water or soil. Avoid direct sunlight. 4 Practice good hygiene to avoid bacteria. Rinse seeds several times a day to prevent mold. Once the sprouts show a bit of green, dry them to remove excess moisture before refrigerating. 4 Refrigerate for up to a week for peak freshness, but no longer. 4 Use a mix of seeds or one kind at a time. Discard any seeds that don’t sprout with the rest. 4 Sunflower seeds produce a particularly high volume of sprouts.
