Klemann continues, “When I work with grievers, I notice an overall ‘lightness’ about them in just the first few weeks. By the end of our seven weeks, many of them feel capable of doing things they didn’t think were possible before grief recovery. They have a more positive outlook on the rest of their life. They feel inspired to do more for themselves, they feel free of the burden and are ready to live.”

Sylvia Robbins established Mystic Desert Kindergarten (ages 5 to 7), a micro homeschool with a creative, earth-centered curriculum in retaliation to the high-tech factory-style schooling prevalent in the U.S. She developed her Four House Curriculum, an educational system that directs attention to the mental, physi cal, emotional and spiritual well-being of the student with the understanding that one house can and will affect the other. Her goal is to weave together a beautiful totality ad dressing all aspects of children and developing an elevated conscience. The benefit of the Four House holistic model is that a child’s innate abilities and gifts can be recognized and further developed at an early age. With this, a child is more likely to find happiness and meaningful purpose in their being without becoming prey to extreme materialism, idol worshipping, selfdestructive behaviors and addictions.

Klemann, Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist, offers relief for those struggling with their grief. “When I think about ‘inspired living’, I think of feeling an openness toward participating in life and doing things that help you grow as a person,” says Klemann. “When you’re grieving, or experiencing significant loss, there is a heaviness in your heart and body. It can be a challenge to feel motivated when you have a hard time leaving your house. It’s not uncommon for grievers to isolate themselves or engage in behaviors that aren’t healthy.”

Ultimately, Robbins believes a more enlightened individual can contribute best to the collective whole. She offers a newly renovated studio fully equipped for a creative, accelerated and fun private Kindergarten experience. She incorporates structured core subjects interwoven with stories, magical kingdoms of fairies, angels, animal spirits, music, art, movement, spiritual development and much more.

Photobiomodulation (sometimes called red light therapy, infrared light therapy or low level light therapy) is a process in which a deeply penetrating light is absorbed by the photoacceptors in the compromised cell’s mitochondria, energizing our adenosine tri phosphate (ATP)—the fuel that drives our cells. This boost of cellular energy results in a cascade of metabolic changes that lead to an increase in micro-circulation, tissue repair and a decrease in inflammation and pain, along with many other therapeutic benefits. These benefits may include diabetic wound healing, as well as helping many skin issues such as aging, acne, bruising, eczema, psoriasis, cold sores and shingles.

A light panel device, such as Celluma, can be used while relaxing at home, reading a book, watching TV or even taking a nap. It is easy, effective, beneficial and affordable.

An enlarged prostate, known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), afflicts half of men by age 60 and 90 percent of men by age 85. Although it isn’t cancerous, treat ment can involve medications and surgery. European doctors often prescribe the herb nettle root, and Iranian researchers tested its effec tiveness in a study that divided 80 BPH patients into two groups. One was given 300 milligrams of nettle root extract twice a day for eight weeks; the other group received a placebo. The researchers found the nettle root significantly improved urinary frequency, urinary urgency and night urination compared with the placebo group. It was not effec tive in modifying prostate volume, the feeling of incomplete empty ing, intermittency, urine stream and straining.

Pain can really mess up our day, from the moment we wake, until we (hopefully) fall asleep at night. Pain can actually feel worse at night and have a horrible effect on a good night’s sleep, and there is nothing worse than lying awake in pain. We all have pain at one time or another, whether it’s a headache, arthritis, nerve pain, muscle pain, joint pain, carpal tunnel, neck pain, neuropathy, postsurgical pain, chronic pain, fibromyalgia or other. Whatever the pain, it is always due to inflammation.

2Attention / Concentration / Memory / Cognitive Function: These are higher intellectual functions and they are not easily separated into separate tasks. In order to remember something, we have to pay attention to it, concentrate and try to remember. It is common after concussion for injured persons to have short-term memory problems and need to make notes and use reminders and

Aconcussion has a unique clinical presentation and can be difficult to diagnose. Many different kinds of injuries may cause a concussion, including assaults, blasts, falls, car accidents and other accidents. It is important to know if you have had a brain injury such as a concussion versus an emotional reaction to your circumstances.Concussioncauses primarily diffuse brain injury, not localized brain injury, for example like a stroke. Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is a common neuropathological cor relate of concussion. Axons are like wires that connect brain cells, and when they are damaged, the integrated network systems of the brain experience disconnection. When the networks have a lot of disconnections, the functions of the brain are slowed and may be inaccurate like an old glitchy computer. There are five categories of neurological symptoms that are typically affected by concussion that may persist. The five pillars of concussion are visual function; atten tion/concentration/memory/cognitive function; sleep; balance and emotions. There is variability in the clinical presentation of these symptom categories.

The Five Pillars of Concussion

12 Tucson Edition NaturalTucson.com

1Visual Function: Problems with visual function are common after a concussion. Injured persons may experi ence photophobia and a sense of “blurry vision”. To address the blurry vision, often an appointment with an optometrist, ophthalmologist or neuro-ophthalmolo gist is scheduled and the injured person is told that their eyes are fine. They may end up with new prescription eyeglasses, but that does not solve the problem. That is because the persistent visual problems are due to brain pathology, not a primary problem with their eyes. The ability to visually fixate (both eyes are steady and continue to look at the same point) and follow (both eyes move together in a coordinated way) is a complex integrated function that involves coordination of many areas of the brain. The frontal lobes, the brainstem (brainstem nuclei and coordination centers for the nerves that control the six muscles around each eye), the occipital cortex for visual infor mation processing and other brain areas must work together. Struggling with vi sual focus can result in visual fatigue and double vision, among other symptoms.

13September 2022 Carol L. Henricks, M.D. is a neurologist specializing in the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and PEMF at NorthStar Hyperbaric, in Tucson. (HBOT) saturates the body with oxygen, reducing inflamma tion and enhancing recovery from central nervous system injury. Connect at 520-229-1238 or NorthStarHBOT.com. alarms to get through their day. Informa tion processing such as complex decision making and understanding ideas is diffi cult. Post-concussion injured persons are easily overwhelmed in situations where there is a lot of stimulation to process. Cognitive functions involve coordination of different areas of the cortex, thalamus, cingulate gyrus and other brain struc tures.

4Balance: Problems with balance and dizzy spells are typical. Balance involves coordinating the activity of many areas of the brain including the vestibular system (inside the ear) proprioception (the body’s way of localizing us in space), vision, frontal motor cortex, basal ganglia, brainstem and cerebellum. An injured person may experience dizzy spells, feel off balance when changing positions and find themselves walking to one side or the other or into walls or worse. They might start to feel “clumsy” and uncoordinated. Episodes of sudden “spinning” and feeling like they may pass out are not uncommon.

5Emotions: Anxiety, depression and irritability are the most common emotional symptoms of post-concussion syndrome. As the underlying brain injury remains untreated, an injured person may manifest clinical symptoms of manicdepression, rage or suicide. There is a biological sadness as a consequence of concussion that may be present that is not a situational response. Emotional symptoms may include pseudobulbar affective (PBA) disorder or emotional incontinence: once someone begins to feel an emotion, they cannot stop the full expression of that emotion. Emotions and the expression of emotion are all brain functions. We don’t have a thought, a behavior or a feeling that does not come from the brain. Brain areas controlling emotion include pre-frontal cortex, limbic system, hippocampus and amygdala. If you notice that you are experiencing a constellation of these symptoms after an injury, make sure that a diagnosis of con cussion is considered before beginning a treatment plan.

3Sleep: Post-concussion sleep, particu larly the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) is disrupted. It is hard to fall asleep, stay asleep and typical to wake up early in the morning and not return to sleep. Nightmares and night terrors (especially for military members and vet erans) are common. Injured brain struc tures include the hypothalamus, thalamus and reticular activating system.

At the end of a morning tennis match, one of the players asked what they should eat for breakfast. She felt “hungry”. The winning choice was toast with almond butter. The other ladies coached her on the quality of bread, suggesting buying from Tucson’s Barrio Bread (BarrioBread.com). However, solving one’s issue of hunger is not always so easy a task. To Break the Fast Preparing for Morning Physical Activities by

Sheila Shea, MA is the Director of Intestinal Health Institute, offering colon hydrotherapy, intestinal and GAPS nutrition, detoxification programs and more. Connect at 520-3259686 or IntestinalHealthInstitute.com.

Some people do intermittent fasting and do not eat until after 11 a.m., creating a window of non-eating from evening to late morning. Many are not hungry in the morning. It’s called “break fast” for a reason—the person breaks their fast later in the morning or early afternoon. After hours of fasting, eating food breaks our fast. If one is hungry in the morning, it would be a good thing to eat. Eating or fasting before an athletic activity in the morning depends on the activity—and the individual. For physical activities like dancing, one might not eat before morn ing studio classes, but find that coffee and water are fine. What kind of hunger is it? Does one simply need to replenish, or is it more— such as falling glucose levels that trigger need to rebalance blood sugar, depleted glycogen stores in liver and inability to burn or use ketones for energy, the fatty acid breakdown of our stored fats. Some are inconsistent in their eating behavior.

The goal when hiking, dancing or playing tennis is to prepare to go through an athletic event without hunger, and to prepare in advance. We want to stay balanced in blood sugar, energy and minerals. What do we pack for the match if hunger is an issue? If hypoglycemia is an issue, have glucose tab lets or an equivalent antidote. If one is only bringing water, the market is abundant with capsules, caffeine, protein shakes, broths/ stocks, raw juice, Gut and Psychology Syn drome (GAPS) shakes and smoothies. Back on the tennis court, the stress of playing three sets of tennis will drive hunger. Activity level determines the volume of food or drink before and dur ing an athletic event. Overall, consistent, positive eating behaviors create consis tent, positive energy.

The Goal Is Preparation

For the tennis player who was hungry after a match—and who wouldn’t be after playing tennis in the sun for a few hours— does eating breakfast solve the hunger problem? What causes the hunger? Does the hunger include weakness or fatigue? When Is It Best to Eat Breakfast?

Causes of hunger include: sugar (too much, too little), depletion of glycogen stores, not burning ketones, inconsistent and imbalanced eating daily/nightly and psychological stress.

No matter which path we follow to aging vibrantly, the most inspiring takeaway is that lifestyle, not genes, determines destiny. “On average in the United States, the last 16 years of life are spent with multiple diagnoses and on multiple medications. We are giving our hard-earned money to pharmacies, hospitals and nursing facilities,” says Kara Fitzger ald, a naturopathic doctor in Newtown, Connecticut, and the author of Younger You: Reduce Your Bio Age and Live Longer, Better. She and other researchers contrast “lifespan”, the years from birth to death, to “healthspan”, the years spent in good health free of age-related disease and disability. “Lifespan is not necessarily healthspan, and we can change that,” she says.

Until recently, age was determined by the year on our birth certificate, but “bio age” is the new number to pay attention to. It might not only predict health outcomes down the road, but also add years to our lives. In ground breaking work in 2017, anti-aging researcher Steven Horvath at the University of California, Los Angeles, used algorithms to calculate biological age on the basis of how extensively our genome is modified by a process called DNA meth ylation. Researchers are now understanding what factors can turn on positive gene expressions and turn off those that may activate life-threatening diseases.

GROWING YOUNGER L ONGEVITY STRATEGIES THAT HELP REVERSE THE AGING PROCESS

Longevity, a human quest through the ages, is now a hot topic among scientific researchers that assert there has never been a better time to maximize our potential for metabolic renewal. Biological age—the state of our health at the cellular level—is in the spotlight, as are the anti-aging benefits of science-supported phytonutrients, cell-rejuvenating foods and safe, non-surgical, stem cell proce dures. Functional medicine, with its focus on the biology-based root causes of disease, is also a rising star in the arena of age reversal.

Age Is Not Just a Number

“Bio age is how fast our bodies are aging, and aging is the main risk factor for all diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, cardiovas cular disease, dementia and neurodegenerative disorders,” says Fitzgerald, noting that only 10 to 20 percent of longevity outcomes are genetic. Fitzgerald and her team drove this point home with the first randomized, controlled study on the power of lifestyle and diet to turn back the biological age clock. Based upon functional medicine, the program enrolled 18 healthy men between ages 50 and 72 in a target group and 20 in a control group. Those in the target group ate a nutrientrich diet, slept seven hours a night, practiced relaxation techniques and took supplemental probiotics and phy tonutrients. They ate only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., exercised for at least 30 minutes five days a week, avoided sweets and consumed two cups of dark, leafy, greens and three cups each of cruciferous vegetables and colorful vegetables daily, as well as six ounces of animal protein.

The results, published last year in the journal Aging, showed that three years of bio age were reduced in the target group in just eight weeks compared to the control group. “What we eat, our stress load and our response to it, the quality of the air we breathe and if we exercise are all drivers or reducers of our bio age. Knowing this, we absolutely need to take responsibility for our lives,” says Fitzgerald. This bio age reversal is good news when we look at the grim statistics. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Cancer Society, approximately 610,000 people die of heart disease in this country each year and more than 600,000 Americans are predicted to succumb to cancer this year alone.

Molecular Magic Harvard genetics professor David Sinclair, author of the seminal Lifespan: Why We Age—And Why We Don’t Have To, discovered antioxidant-rich resveratrol in grapes in 2003. Since then, he and other researchers have found additional com pounds with the ability to activate lon gevity pathways. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD, or B3), a coenzyme involved in many metabolic processes essential to life, has been shown to re juvenate aging mice, increasing energyproducing mitochondria in the cells and fortifying muscle mass. The body makes less NAD as we age, but research suggests that intermittent fasting, exercise and heat saunas can stimulate this youth-preserv ing molecule. NAD-boosting supplements are also on the market, but consuming foods like naturally fermented sauerkraut, raw milk, nutritional yeast and pumpkin seeds is also a good strategy. Radical Renewal Without Surgery

Chronic systemic inflammation is now understood to be the physiological springboard for most diseases ranging from cancer to depression, but its connection to uric acid is critical in pro ducing free radicals that accelerate aging. “Unfortunately, most doctors look upon uric acid solely as a risk marker for gout. We now recognize that uric acid serves as a powerful signal in the body to prepare for food and water scarcity,” says neurologist David Perlmutter, author of The New York Times bestseller Grain Brain and the recent Drop Acid, a guide to lowering uric acid in the body. “Uric acid levels above 5.5 milligrams per decilitre trigger the body to raise the blood pressure, increase the blood sugar, become insulin-resistant and increase the formation and storage of body fat,” he says. “Central to regaining metabolic health and reducing risk for metabolic conditions like Al zheimer’s disease, coronary artery disease and Type 2 diabetes is reining in uric acid.”

Eating to reduce inflammation is key, and there is power on our plates when we add some of Fitzgerald’s longevity boost ers like turmeric, green tea, shitake mushrooms, wild-caught salmon, eggs, liver and sunflower seeds. A study last year in Experimental Gerontology reported that the amino acid L-the anine, found particularly in green tea, reduced oxidative stress, liver degeneration and inflammatory responses in aging rats.

Fitzgerald concurs, “Excessive inflammation—an imbal anced immune response—accelerates the aging process, and it increases with stress. Stress is the gasoline on the fire of aging.”

Chronic, unmanaged stress is a major factor in physical and mental decline due to elevated levels of cortisol. “Stress threatens the health and diversity of our gut bacteria, leading to increased gut permeability, a central mechanism underlying widespread inflammation, which is the cornerstone of all chronic degenera tive conditions,” says Perlmutter. “Those conditions as a category are ranked by the World Health Organization as the number one cause of death on our planet today.”

In the daily survival game, the body’s stem cells generate special ized cells to replace those throughout the body that are dam aged and dying. This ongoing repair process slows down as we advance in years, but cutting-edge procedures offer new hope for conditions ranging from arthritis to age-related brain fog. “Stem cells improve DNA methylation and telomere length, and result in a reduced physiologic age compared to your chron ologic age,” says Chadwick Prodromos, a Chicago-based, boardcertified orthopedic surgeon and the founder of the Prodromos Stem Cell Institute, in Antigua. “Joint replacements are offered quite liberally nowadays, but most of our patients with severe arthritis who were offered joint replacements do well in our care without them for virtually any joint in the body.” Prodromos and his team combine umbilical cord-derived stem cell treatment (non-embryonic/fetal) with specially selected nutritional supple ments and in some patients, platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acidEveninjections.withexciting advances in the promotion of long life, ex perts are unanimous in stressing that going into our golden years disease-free begins and ends with individual lifestyle choices, starting with what we put in our mouths. “Diet is the most criti cal variable in terms of our metabolic destiny. It’s been said that a person can’t exercise away a poor diet, and there’s great wisdom in this statement,” says Perlmutter. “While stem cell treatment has been quite effective, it is important to remember that avoiding chemicals in the environ ment, exercising vigorously and maintaining a low BMI [body mass index] are clearly the most important factors in good health,” advises Prodromos. If the face is subject to trauma, it is possible that normal and rhythmic bone motion becomes restricted, and we may begin to develop symptoms not only in the face, head and neck, but also elsewhere in the body.

One of the common causes of trauma in teeth (and the mouth/face/head in general) is intensive dental treatments. Some common causes of dental trauma include: tooth extraction, root canals, freezing/anesthesia, upper full or partial denture, bridges that

A native of Des Plaines, Illinois, Jakubowski has always been doing art, even before it became a career. She majored in theater at the University of Colorado. After that, she attended the Art Institute of Colorado for art design. When she graduated, Jakubowski realized she hates snow, and applied for jobs in Tucson and San Diego. Jakubowski received equal offers in both cities. Because the cost of living was higher in San Diego, she moved to Tucson to work in commercial art, doing designs for brochures, promo tional materials and mailers. Next, she worked for a T-shirt company, then shifted to custom embroidery design until the year 2000, when she literally fell off of a horse. The resulting traumatic brain injury put an end to her full-time employment as a commercial artist. She became self-employed by necessity, painting subjects she loves.

Whether it involves getting down on a mat or practicing modified poses with the use of a chair, yoga helps us to stay nimble, manage stress, reduce symptoms of depression and tame high blood pressure. Yoga has been around for thousands of years for good reason, and health organizations like the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center are now recommending the healing modality for a better quality of life.

“What I learned is that we need four essential physical skills to navigate through life as we age—strength, flexibility, balance and agility—and we get that from yoga. We can find indepen dence in our everyday life, and we don’t need a vigorous yoga class to do that,” says Ruth Pipitone, a gentle yoga instructor at various studios and senior centers in Northeastern Pennsyl vania. For those that only associate the practice with youthful bodies and hip yoga gear, yoga is a full-spectrum practice. “Any one can do yoga—gentle yoga, chair yoga and even wheelchair yoga.”According to a 2016 study of 227 participants reported in the journal Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation, just 12 minutes of daily gentle yoga over 10 years improved bone mineral density in the spine and upper legs. About four in five participants had osteoporosis or osteopenia (low bone density), indicating that yoga is a good strategy for the 10 million Americans over the age of 50 with osteoporosis and the 44 million with osteopenia.

For Terecita “Ti” Blair, yoga offered a new way of life after a catastrophic automobile accident in 2009. The Denver-based trauma and resilience educator and 2017 SilverSneakers In structor of the Year says, “Virtually any style or type of yoga can appeal and work well for you today, but not tomorrow. Therefore real ‘yoga’ is about adaptability, and yes, those of us with compromised joints, immune systems, pain, disability and illness can absolutely benefit from yoga.”

Those with conditions ranging from cancer to Parkinson’s disease can reap benefits from an appropriate yoga environ ment. In 2021, a meta-analysis of 12 studies published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public

Health found that yoga can increase muscle strength, mobility, balance and lower body flexibility in mature adults. An older study from Temple University showed that Iyengar yoga can improve balance and prevent falls in women over 65 years old. The Breath of Now

The keystone of all yoga practice is work ing with the breath, an action that is natu rally compromised by just getting out of bed and into the day’s challenges. “Most adults breathe from their chest. That’s where we activate the stress response of fight, flight or freeze. We need to use the lower lungs, too, so we can activate the parasympathetic nervous system to find calm,” says Pipitone.

Blair, who specializes in helping oth ers to find emotional equilibrium after trauma, concurs: “The nervous system is symbiotic with the breath, and vice versa. A long, deep inhale and a long, slow exhale can act as an immediate elixir for the nervous system to recognize that, in that moment, we are okay.” She has taught groups of people, some in wheelchairs and hospital beds, and she “still experienced the entire room shift when breathing together. As long as we are able to con sciously notice breath, we can do yoga.” No matter how many trips we take around the sun, tapping into the life force can give us a new perspective. “I use asana (yoga poses) to examine my thoughts and feelings and to find intro spection to examine what is happening with myself physically, as well as mentally and emotionally,” says Pipitone. “You be come more mindful of what you need to carry with you and what you don’t need to carry with you.” In essence, we deepen as we age, and yoga can meet us on a multidimensional level. “Yoga does not have to mean poses. Possibilities are infinite, and adaptations are unlimited, based upon our needs,” says Blair. Connect with Maya Whitman at Ekstasis28@gmail.com.

You can’t make a lot of mistakes. Canning, if you do it wrong, can make everyone in your family sick.” The only caveat, Cancler says, is that food not thoroughly dried will get moldy. Preventing Dog Dementia STRATEGIES TO PRESERVE COGNITIVE HEALTH

A connection has been established be tween Alzheimer’s disease and periodontal disease in humans, and a recent study has revealed a similar association between gum disease and canine cognitive dys function (CCD). By comparing dogs with CCD and a control group of healthy dogs, New York integrative veterinarian Curtis Dewey, of Elemental Pet Vets, and Mark Rishniw, of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, found that older natural pet

mong the many traits that dogs and humans share is the potential with aging for progressive cognitive decline, which canines can experience as early as 7 years of age. Clinical signs of cognitive decline appear in 50 percent of dogs over 11 and by the time they are 15, 68 percent display at least one sign. The five classic and easily observable indicators of cognitive decline in dogs are de creased attention to surroundings, disinterest and apathy; decreased purposeful activity; increased sleep during a 24-hour period; intermittent anxiety expressed through appre hension, panting, moaning or shivering; and loss of formerly acquired knowledge, includ ing house training. Other symptoms include failure to respond to commands, difficulty hearing, inabil ity to recognize familiar people and difficulty navigating their environment. Physical manifestations may show up as excessive licking, lack of grooming, fecal and urinary incontinence and loss of appetite.

3. Optimize their nutrition. The best fuel for canine cognitive health is a combina tion of healthy fats—especially omega-3 fatty acids like sustainably sourced krill oil and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil—and a variety of antioxidant-rich whole foods suitable for a carnivore, including high-quality protein. Eliminate refined carbohydrates like sugar, grains, potatoes and legumes, as well as extruded diets (kibble) that contain toxic byprod ucts of the manufacturing process that are linked to neurodegenerative disease.

4. Improve memory with nutraceuticals. Because studies show that MCT in coconut oil can improve cognitive function in older dogs, add a quarter-teaspoon of coconut oil for every 10 pounds of body weight to food daily. Other supplements to con sider are S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), jellyfish extracts, glutathione, resveratrol (Japanese knotweed), lion’s mane mush room, vinpocetine, phosphatidylserine, curcumin, ubiquinol, digestive enzymes and probiotics.

1. Incorporate regular exercise, socializa tion and mental stimulation. While they can’t exert themselves with the same inten sity as younger dogs, senior canines derive tremendous benefits from walks—especially unhurried “sniffaris”—and other age-appro priate physical activity and strengthening exercises. Short periods of play time with people and other pets in controlled situa tions can also help. Food puzzles and treatrelease toys provide fun, mental stimula tion, while brief training sessions refresh their memory or teach new skills.

reintroduce them to a crate if they were crate-trained initially. Acupuncture may also help. If a dog has problems hearing or see ing, use odor cues like pet-friendly es sential oils or pheromone products to help them find their way around. Also consider purchasing or building ramps if they’re having trouble getting into the car or up on the bed or a favorite chair. If they’re slipping or unsure on bare floors, add runners, yoga mats or area rugs. For sleep problems, try increasing their daytime activity level.
