Oracle Property for Sale, Perfect for Holistic Business

H

olistic practitioners or businesses may be interested in a business property that is for sale in Oracle. The owner believes this property is perfect for a holistic practitioner or holistic business of some kind. For sale or lease, the property includes two commercial units and one mobile home—a great opportunity for a key employee to live onsite. Located at 1880 West American Avenue, the Oracle space includes two, 1,200-square-foot commercial units in one building connected by a breezeway, with a mobile home behind the building. The seller is willing to either sell or lease, depending on which happens first. Individual commercial units may be leased for $1,200 a month, and the three-bedroom, two-bath mobile home can be leased for $750 per month. The mobile home is currently occupied; please do not disturb the tenant. About 35 miles north of Tucson, Oracle is a great place to live and work, especially for holistic businesses and folks interested in this lifestyle. With an elevation of 4,524 feet, Oracle could be best known for its nice weather, with low temperatures of about 35 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and high temperatures of 92 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, making it cooler in summer than Tucson to the south and Phoenix to the north. Tourist attractions that bring people to Oracle include Biosphere 2 and Oracle State Park, encompassing nearly 4,000 acres, with 15 miles of hiking trail and a wildlife refuge. The median home price is lower than most parts of Arizona. For more information, contact the owner at 520-877-7773. See ad, page 18.

t’s tough living with pain. Edge Integrative Wellness knows that for those who have been suffering from a chronic condition, temporary relief isn’t enough. It’s more than just dealing with ongoing pain; if it goes on long enough it can destroy emotional well-being. People need a longterm solution to regain the quality of their life. Maria Crawford, FNP and founder of Edge Integrative Wellness, has earned additional credentials to help clients eliminate pain, and offers treatments for advanced regenerative therapies to optimize relief and support tissue regeneration, including Prolozone Injections and Ozone IV Therapy. Prolozone Injections are homeopathic/oxygen-ozone injections that target degenerative areas in the body to support natural healing. According to the Journal of Prolotherapy, these injections can regenerate damaged tissues and eliminate the root cause of pain. Popular in Europe for decades, Prolozone is often used to ease chronic pain in joints, knees, neck and back. Ozone IV Therapy helps increase energy, reduce pain and support overall well-being by stimulating the body’s natural immune response. According to the National Institutes of Health, the three types of oxygen in ozone are shown in studies to reduce inflammation, which can reduce pain. Those tired of dealing with pain can schedule a treatment with Crawford to eliminate discomfort and optimize their physical health and emotional well-being.

rish Harris aims to help people transition back to the faster pace of life through yoga at Divine Journey Yoga. The 500 RYT Certified yoga teacher specializes in yoga for mature adults, and has been teaching Gentle Hatha and Yin Yoga in Tucson since 2015. She has expanded to include Zoom classes and weekly YouTube videos. Her weekly classes include five 9 a.m. Zoom classes and four 11 a.m. in-person classes at two different locations. The first class is always free. “We need a reliable, safe, organized, stabilizing force amid the chaos of change. In the pandemic, we were forced to slow down. Now as things begin to speed up again, we might be missing that slower pace,” explains Harris. “The way it has felt to me is like the different rhythms of riding a horse. During the pandemic we were ambling along at a slow, easy, rolling walk. It felt a bit like being rocked gently. Now it feels like it’s more of a bouncing trot. The pace feels choppy and even a bit jarring. In yoga, we can find that slower pace, the gentle rocking that brings a feeling of nurture Trish Harris and ease.” Harris especially enjoys teaching and practicing her Friday 9 a.m. Low and Slow class on Zoom. The class involves rocking, stretching, breathing and slowing down, rarely getting much higher than kneeling. “For all of us, as we transition into this new world with all the stressful and traumatic effects of living and losing through a pandemic, I recommend taking a break to breathe and stretch and move at an easy pace,” she says. For more information and to register for classes, call 520-490-4012, email Trish@DivineJourneyYoga.com or visit DivineJourneyYoga.com.

ennica Klemann, Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist in Tucson, offers relief for those struggling with their grief, specializing in physical and emotional grief work. She provides her grief coaching services in person and online, and offers help specifically tailored to youth dealing with various forms of grief. “When we consider what it was like to be a child ourselves, we can understand the expanse of emotions that children are experiencing right now. Everything feels so permanent. The way things are now, seem like forever,” says Klemann. “They may be dealing with the death of a pet or family member (or the fear of a parent or loved one dying), the stress of divorced parents, the end of their own relationship or friendships, bullying, homeschooling, missing their social life during quarantine—and the list goes on and on. Our kids are grieving in ways we never experienced when we Jennica Klemann were their age.” In Klemann’s youth-specific grief work, she uses the book entitled When Children Grieve: For Adults to Help Children Deal with Death, Divorce, Pet Loss, Moving, and Other Losses, and she helps parents or caregivers with the grieving youth in their life.

y the time symptoms of a disease show up, it is often too late for oral use of vitamins and minerals. All of our cells need to be maximally healthy for our whole body to be optimally healthy. Giving vitamins and minerals at higher concentrations through intravenous (IV) therapy allows those nutrients to enter the cells due to the sheer numbers of molecules provided by the IV process. Bypassing the intestinal processes also increases overall absorption. IVs can help treat a number of health issues, including: fatigue, anxiety, bloating, dehydration, bacterial infections, viral infections, fungal infections, heavy metal poisoning, electrolyte deficiencies, adrenal fatigue, Lyme disease, microbiome issues, diverticulosis, heat exhaustion, mold toxicity, pain management, musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular issues and atherosclerosis. Even shortness of breath can be assisted with a Magnesium push. A Trace Mineral IV can help with: chronic infections, chronic inflammation, hypertension, immune disorders, infections, metabolic concerns, mineral depletion, post-surgery, post-trauma or for pre-surgery nutritional support. Dr. DeeAnn G. Saber, NMD practices at Transformational Medicine, in Tucson, where she provides IV therapies and other services. Their next IV special is for Trace Minerals. She has learned to trust her intuition and dowse with her body. She advises, “Follow your feet.” Dowsing organizations recognize respected “Sky Dowsers” who have died after leaving a legacy of new and old wisdom about all manner of dowsing. Tucson dowser, Barrie Herr, suggests that all dowsing groups make a concerted effort to bring in young people so that this ancient intuitive art will survive beyond the older, more experienced dowsers.

Learn More About Dowsing

Tucson Dowsers Heal and Clear Energies

T

by Katta Mapes

ucson is fortunate to have one of the longest running local chapters of the American Society of Dowsers. At monthly meetings—now virtual—the group features presentations by expert dowsers from all over the world. There are so many facets and dynamics to dowsing, both with and without devices, to find things and information, or to heal and clear unwanted energies. Carol Dickmar, Treasurer and Secretary for the Tucson Dowsers, explains that, “Dowsing is all about intention.” The motto listed on the home page for the Tucson Dowsers, TucsonDowsers.net, is “Accessing our higher selves with focused intent, for the benefit of all.” Anyone can learn to dowse. Beginners typically start by using a tool or device such as metal rods that are shaped either as a “Y” or an “L”. Another common tool is a pendulum—an object that dangles at the end of a string or chain. Once they learn the basics, students may advance to deviceless dowsing. At the Tucson Dowsers June meeting, Heather Wilks, Vice President of the Victoria

Society of Dowsers in Melbourne, Australia, shared the ways she uses dowsing to work closely with the Nature Spirits in her own country and other places: to alleviate serious drought, bushfires, blizzards, cyclones and floods. Since that meeting, which is available as a recording on the Tucson Dowsers website, the Tucson Dowsers hold a weekly 15-minute session for group dowsing with the intention of increasing rain locally—in appropriate amounts. Common dowsing protocols begin by asking these questions on the ethics of a dowsing event: • May I? Do I have permission to do this work? • Can I? Do I have the ability to successfully dowse in this area? Am I ready? • Should I? Is this the right time and is it okay for me to dowse on this? Dr. Theresa Gonzalez, President of the Tucson Dowsers, always sets the intention for the most benevolent outcome. At the July meeting, Cynthia Sue Larson,

Attend the Tucson Dowsers monthly Zoom meetings on the first Saturday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Their website also lists dowser meetings in other locations. At this point the group depends on optional donations, but may move to a membership program in order to be able to cover all expenses. Gonzalez says that, because these meetings are now virtual, the group is now able to provide a broad range of dynamic and experienced speakers on all aspects of dowsing. The site has links to current and past events. Attend the biennial Flagstaff Dowsers Conference with in-person workshops and classes, October 6 to 12, at the Little America Hotel. Register at DowsersSouthwest.com. Beginning dowsers and youth can take the special schools before and during the conference. Advanced dowsers can take special schools before the conference. On Saturday afternoon, Gonzalez, a Tucson veterinarian, will share her wisdom and experience in her talk: “Our Animal Companions – Simple Tips for Amazing Results: Dowsing to Improve Communication and Ensure the Health and Wellbeing of our Furry, Feathered and Scaled Friends.” Check out The American Society of Dowsers, located in Danville, Vermont. What tips do you have for a healthy diet? Nutrition for us is not about a specific diet; it is about everything we incorporate into our bodies daily. It includes foods and drinks, the air we breathe, the books we read, the music/news we listen to and the TV content we watch.

Detox the body from processed/junk food. Avoid food and beverages that come prepackaged in boxes, cans, bags or frozen food. Choose a wholesome diet based 100 percent in natural food such as vegetables, fruits,

whole grains, legumes, nuts, water, herbal tea. Keep in mind that how we prepare the food, where we eat our meals and our emotional state when we eat, play a big role as well.

Debunking Common Myths About Mental Illness

Breathe. Breathing clean air in the proper way has a big impact on our general wellbeing, and that includes avoiding smoking, vaping and air pollutants. Instead, practice simple breathing exercises (pranayama) daily.

Mindfulness 24/7. Being mindful of how we nurture our mind and body can help us make the right choices—mostly when we need to keep ourselves free from alcohol, tobacco and drugs, since they affect both our body and mind.

How do acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) help us heal?

TCM teaches us that the body and the mind (Shen) can be harmed by external factors if we fail to maintain healthy habits and adequate nourishment. They can also be harmed by internal factors, especially excessive negative emotions. Research studies have provided a more scientific explanation about the benefits of acupuncture. They show that neuromodulation can be achieved with acupuncture by correcting blockages or imbalances in the nervous and endocrine systems, promoting a protective effect against the stress response. It also enhances the immune system, promoting an effective response to external pathogens.

What is Tui Na massage?

Tui Na is a form of bodywork based on TCM. This therapeutic massage engages the body on a deeper, energetic level by tapping into acupuncture points and channels to balance and/or boost the body’s vital energy (qi). We use Tui Na to “seal” the acupuncture treatments and our patients love it. Some benefits include muscle relaxation, relief of mental and physical fatigue, relief of pain and reduction of tension and anxiety.

Detox the mind by avoiding violent news and TV shows, mindless books, songs with negative lyrics, etc. Understanding that everything we see and hear has an impact in our brain can help us find a way to switch toward more positive inputs: self-help books, educational TV shows and documentaries, music with beat and positive lyrics, etc.

by Lucy Surya and Herald Surya Myth #1: ‘The label stays with you forever.’ Healthcare providers must play a role in shifting the paradigms on vulnerability, weakness and the use of undermining labels. They have an important task to outline the significance of understanding that de-stigmatization starts with the individual. Instead of saying “I’m an addict,” try saying “I have an addiction.” Instead of saying “I’m bipolar,” say “I have a bipolar disorder.” A condition does not define who we are. Myth #2: ‘I can figure this out on my own.’ Expressing our emotions and thoughts before a stranger is an action that is understandably intimidating. However, the choice to share certain aspects of our life with a healthcare provider and seek their unbiased guidance, underpins both a person’s commitment to mental well-being and the understanding of limitations. Myth #3: ‘Mental illness does not get better without medication.’ Knowing what treatment options exist, can help people find the right type of help for their unique needs. Some of the different available options include psychotherapy, creative or expressive therapies, group counseling and mindfulness-based therapy. Myth #4: ‘I’m not crazy. So, why would I need treatment?’ This misbelief relates mental health with madness; however, behavioral health care is equally suitable for a person with a manic episode, or for someone with depression and anxiety. A behavioral healthcare provider can offer an unbiased yet critical perspective of a situation, encourage people to identify warning signs or symptoms and help those undergoing treatment to prevent the problem from worsening. These actions can promote a prevention-oriented mindset and foster a more resilient individual. Myth #5: ‘My physical condition has nothing to do with my inner thoughts and emotions (or vice-versa).’ The World Health Organization states that “there is no health without mental health”. We have observed that patients with depression often have worse physical health than those without depression. It can work the other way as well; people with any physical disease tend to feel more psychological distress than do healthy people. Myth #6: ‘My psychiatrist/psychologist/medication will give me all the answers I need.’ Over-exaggerated trust and complete dependence on external resources (e.g. a healthcare provider, a medication, a specific therapy) can be misleading. The physician’s job is to offer guidance and to teach tools, a medication is used to ease symptoms and therapy is an adjuvant in the healing process, but the choice is the individual’s. It is their health, and they have control in its course. In the world of mental health treatment, to recover means not to completely get rid of all emotional or mental health issues, but instead to learn about the challenges one faces, work to manage them and cope with them in a healthy manner. What is Virtual Reality (VR) therapy?

VR is an immersive therapy that blends traditional talk therapy, biofeedback and exposure therapy by having clients engage and interact with virtual 3D environments where they can experience psychological and emotional responses in a safe and controlled manner. The main objective is to reduce the mind’s reactivity and to build resilience, so when confronted with similar situations in the real world, the patient can respond in a constructive and purposeful manner. VR therapy can help people process trauma, memories and emotions more deeply, leading to an impactful healing.

RHIO Program is a unique program trademarked by Eastwest Integrated Care. What is it and how does it help someone discover a more purposeful life?

RHIO (Rediscover Health from Inside Out) program is basically a mindfulness bootcamp that covers some of the main aspects of our lives: relationships, nutrition, exercise, intellect, spirituality, environment, emotional intelligence and social connection. This evidence-based group therapy has the main objective of gaining insight about ourselves, others and the world around us, while learning mindfulness and how to incorporate its practice in our daily life.

Several research studies have demonstrated the positive effects of the practice of mindfulness; it strengthens our immune system, reduces stress, lowers our levels of cortisol and improves sleep. It also promotes neuroplasticity so our brain can create new, healthier neural pathways, as well as increasing our focus, attention, memory, creativity and innovation.

What role does exercise play in keeping the body healthy?

About almost 2,000 years ago Dr. Hua Tuo, a legendary surgeon from the Han dynasty in China, wrote, “People are like water; water that moves and flows freely is clean and healthy, but water that is stagnant breeds pestilence.” He believed that a lethargic body would become ill more easily. The benefits from an active living are several: helps us getting healthier, increases our chances of living longer, makes us feel better about ourselves, reduces the chance of becoming depressed, improves sleep, help us stay in shape and strengthen muscles and bones, help us stay at or get to a healthy weight, it is great for socializing and most importantly, it is fun.

What is the greatest reward you get from working with patients?

It is our profound belief that the greatest impact is established during the interaction between the practitioner and the patient. Our experience has taught us the importance of connecting with every patient by actively listening, and how much the outcomes can improve when we practice kindness and compassion toward the person in front of us. A smile after the treatment is the best reward. Eastwest Integrated Care is located at 7440 N. Oracle Rd., Bldg. 4, in Tucson. Connect at 520-308-5289 or EastwestWell.com. See ad, page 9. Seven Ways to Change Your Mind and Be Happier

W

hat is happiness? Aristotle pondered it, our country’s founders encouraged its pursuit, but only now—thanks to the thriving field of Positive Psychology—have we learned more precisely how to attain and sustain it. In thousands of studies in the last two decades, researchers have watched babies share crackers, put Tibetan monks in brain scanners, asked college students to do kind deeds and explored databases, among other strategies. A major finding has emerged: Happiness is, to a great degree, in our own hands—or more exactly, our own minds. “You get to choose,” says trailblazing researcher Barbara Fredrickson, author of Positivity and Love 2.0 and a professor at the University of North Carolina. “No matter

by Ronica O’Hara where your river of emotions flows today, over time and with continued effort and attention, you can change its course and location to live a happier, more positive life.” Using advanced brain imaging technology, neuroscientists and psychologists have discovered that the brain is “plastic” and malleable. When we change our thinking and actions in positive ways, brain neurons start rewiring themselves to make newfound happiness settle in, especially if our practices are repetitive. “Interestingly, changes can start quite quickly,” says neuroscientist Andrew Newberg, who has authored 10 books on the brain, emotions and spirituality, including Words Can Change Your Brain. “For those changes to become more fully ingrained, it

THINK YOURSELF HAPPY

can take a few months, but it does not necessarily require hours a day for many years.” A change in thinking shifted the behavior and life of John Peterson, a sales manager at a major West Coast auto retailer and editor of SafeDriveGear.com. “I was unhappy and miserable, so I decided to give gratitude a shot,” he recalls. “It was mechanical to start, but the reactions I got turned into a domino effect.” Instead of giving cursory thanks, he praised a co-worker’s kindness in handing him a daily cup of coffee; now they chat about their families. Instead of “keeping myself to myself,” he offered to help a neighbor he barely knew to clean gutters; now they’re “barbecue besties,” he says, adding, “I was kind of blown away at the incredible effect gratitude had on my life, both in improving my mental health and boosting my relationships. It was a real revelation to me!” Positive psychologists offer two major approaches: adopting habits that encourage happiness and clearing away the mental debris that blocks it. Many books and websites offer a wide range of theories, techniques and tips. “The most effective practices for you are the ones that you enjoy and are willing to do more often,” says Tchiki Davis, Ph.D., a Psychology Today blogger and founder of The Berkeley Well-Being Institute. The following are research-based methods to enhance happiness:

for a three-to-one ratio 1Aim of positive to negative experiences. The difference between languishing and flourishing, says Fredrickson in her book Positivity, is constructing a life in

which heartfelt positive experiences outnumber the negatives by three to one. Positive experiences that flow from feelings such as gratitude, serenity, hope, awe and love can be as simple as exchanging smiles with a passerby, patting a friend on the back, joking with a cashier, picking up something that someone has dropped or planting a kiss on a son’s head. She emphasizes that the experiences must be authentic and heartfelt: acting “Pollyanna-ish” out of habit or pasting on a smile can actually make us feel worse, and positivity can turn toxic if it’s relentlessly turned on 100 percent of the time. “True happiness is not rigid and unchanging,” she says. When it comes to marriage, five positive interactions for every negative one is the “magic ratio” that makes it happy and stable, according to studies by renowned relationship psychologist John Gottman, author of What Makes Love Last. “Successful long-term relationships are created through small words, small gestures and small acts,” he writes.

2Flip negativity by reframing experiences.

Positive reframing involves shifting misery-making thinking to see the positive side of any situation. Canadian researchers reported in a 340-person survey at APA PsycNet that during the pandemic, reframing was the most effective mental health strategy; people practicing it gradually felt better, while people that vented, distracted themselves or disengaged from others fared worse. Reframing strategies include viewing a problem as a challenge, a learning opportunity or a way to help others; finding the higher purpose or divine order in a bad situation; exploring what the unexpected benefits might be; and finding humor in a situation.

3Defuse the inner critic with caring self-talk.

Berating ourselves for our shortcomings is a sure route to suffering, but applying self-compassion powerfully lowers the volume. It involves three elements: treating ourselves as kindly as we would a dear friend; realizing that making mistakes is intrinsically human so we’re not alone; and nonjudgmentally facing our emotions without denying or indulging them, according to its major theorist, psychologist Kristin Neff, author of Self-Compassion: Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind. Numerous studies show that people that practice self-compassion have less self-doubt and fewer negative thoughts, are less likely to feel anxious or depressed, enjoy better health and relationships and are more resilient and motivated to change.

Of our estimated 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day, about 80 percent are negative and 95 percent are repetitive, says the National Science Foundation. Those noisy mental loops dampen our spirits by repetitively telling us that something regretful should not have happened in the past or is going to happen to blight the future. Few worries have real credence: A Cornell University study found that 85 percent of what people worry about never happens. Of the 15 percent of worries that did happen, 79 percent of people found they handled the problem better than they had expected or that they learned a valuable lesson from it. Cognitive behavioral therapists help clients to examine those beliefs and assumptions, challenge the dysfunctional ones and try out different interpretations to uncover the truth. Victor Blue, a Tampa transportation engineer, examined his difficult relationship with a tyrannical father by asking himself two questions that spiritual teacher and author Byron Katie suggests applying to any painful thought: “Is it true? Can you absolutely know it’s true?” Self-inquiring deeply, Blue realized he had a distorted view: His father had in fact loved him, but had lacked the capacity to show it with warmth or tenderness. “My father started with very little and saw a tough world and treated everyone tough,” he says. “And I came to realize that yes, I am able to father myself.”

5Open the heart by deepening gratitude.

Perhaps the most popular and direct approach to happiness is gratitude. Research shows that feeling and expressing thankfulness significantly boosts emotional well-being, makes us feel more connected and generous to others, and improves health and sleep quality. In one study, writing a few sentences of gratitude once per week for 10 weeks increased optimism and hope in participants; they even exercised more and had fewer doctor visits than those writing about aggravations. Writing a thank-you letter to someone we haven’t appreciated enough in the past can induce a sense of well-being that lasts for at least six months, a University of Pennsylvania study found.

the noisy mind with meditation, prayer 6Quiet and mindfulness.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, Newberg and other neuroscientists studied meditating Buddhist monks, prayerful Catholic nuns and mindfulness meditators. They found that each practice has its own distinctive pattern of brain activity, yet all three deactivate the brain regions that underlie mind chatter. That “default mode network” is constantly ruminating, nagging and making sure we avoid trouble. Sustained spiritual practices gradually turn down its everyday volume, which may explain in part the well-documented link between spiritual practices and well-being. Even brief meditations can have a quieting effect, counsels New York City psychologist and mindfulness teacher Loch Kelly, author of Shift into Freedom. In a quiet moment, he suggests, “Ask yourself, ‘What is here right now if there is no problem to solve?’”

7Lift up others with a positive outlook.

The more we give with a full heart, the more happiness we experience, studies show—and the benefits radiate far beyond ourselves. Following nearly 5,000 people over 20 years, Harvard researchers found that one person’s happiness triggers a chain reaction up to three degrees away, lifting the spirits not only of friends, but friends’ friends, and their friends’ friends’ friends. Effects can last up to one year. It’s a vital way to help the world, says Fredrickson. “The happiness that you experience together with others has ripple effects, both biological and behavioral, that make whole communities healthier.” Health writer Ronica O’Hara can be reached at OHaraRonica@gmail.com.

and founder of the Institute for Life Coach Training. “If I hire a specialist like a wellness coach, I assume they’re going to know something about wellness, but I’m not hiring a consultant to tell me what I should do in diet and exercise. I want to be coached in living a more well life.” According to master certified coach Fran Fisher, with 30 years of experience, “Life coaching is a safe environment or sacred space of unconditional love and acceptance where learning, growth and transformation naturally occur. It’s a partnership of two experts. The client is the expert of the content: who they are, what’s important to them and what they believe, think and feel. The coach is the expert of the process. They’ve been specially trained to help the client access their deeper wisdom and make better choices that align with who they are.”

iring a life coach can be an empowering decision for people that want to understand themselves better and lead fulfilled lives. Coaches may specialize in distinct topics like business, parenting or weight loss, but, “It’s all life coaching,” says Patrick Williams, a master certified coach by the International Coach Federation, licensed psychologist

Martha Beck, Ph.D., a Harvard-trained sociologist, renowned coach and bestselling author of The Way of Integrity, says, “Most problems can be resolved by simply talking to someone who is willing to listen compassionately and deeply to whatever is going on in their lives and to give them good feedback. A coach will get you to high levels of happiness, self-fulfillment and selfexpression. Unlike therapists, coaches don’t deal with the mentally ill. They deal with the mentally well who want to maximize their performance.” “A coach helps you think and say and dream of things you hadn’t thought before,” says Williams. “I can advise myself all day long, but as soon as I have a conversation with a trained coach, I hear myself differently. I get new ideas, and that motivates me to make change. The value may come monetarily. It may improve someone’s business or money decisions, but it also may come in how you live your life. There may be value in having less stress, more time, more fun. Anybody who is motivated to make a change or maybe is in the midst of change and they don’t know what to do; that’s who benefits from coaching.”

Limiting Beliefs and Turtle Steps According to Beck, one of the most common issues a coach must address is their clients’ limiting beliefs. “It’s about freeing yourself

from beliefs that are preventing you from moving forward or convincing you that you can’t have what you want, so you never try,” says Beck. “There’s something in your behavior that’s not allowing you to move forward. Let’s find the behavior, figure out why you’re doing it and change that belief. It’s good old-fashioned problem solving in partnership with the client.” Beck’s favorite tool for making changes is what she calls one-degree turns, or turtle steps, defined as the smallest steps you can take toward a goal. “Research shows that large steps tend to get discouraging,” she notes. “We could do them at the beginning of a really passionate, goal-seeking time, but we almost never sustain it. If we go in tiny steps toward what we really believe and what we really want, we get there. The tortoise wins the race.”

Achieving Goals and Feeling Free

When it comes to setting and achieving goals, coaches have different approaches. Williams, for example, considers himself an accountability partner. “I won’t punish you if you don’t achieve your goals,” he says. “If you report progress, we celebrate and talk about what’s next. If you say, ‘I didn’t get it done,’ then we talk about what got in the way, what needs to change. We never make the client wrong. It’s what’s true for you.” For Beck, goals take a back seat. “My clients tend to give me goals that are culturally based on what they think they should do. People move forward much more rapidly when you don’t hold them to a goal. When they have permission to do whatever they want, they actually start doing the things that all the goal setting in the world won’t allow them to do. We have such a strong response to freedom. When we feel like we’re forcing ourselves to do something, we won’t do it because it’s not free. When we’re free, we do the things that are best for us.” For more information, visit DrPatWilliams. com, FranFisherCoach.com and MarthaBeck.com. Sandra Yeyati, J.D., is a professional writer. A Conversation with Aureleo Rosano by Suzie Agrillo

H

ome is a working studio for Aureleo Rosano, whose peaceful space in the far northwest desert is surrounded by his art. He built the house himself, including making his own bricks. His unique and vibrantly designed glass art is ubiquitously present. When Rosano was growing up, both of his parents were admirers of the arts. While his parents pushed the arts strongly as something important in life, his father instilled in his son’s mind the concept that one can’t make a living creating art. Proving his father wrong, the selftaught artist has created glass and sculpture works that he has been perfecting over a lifetime of experience, many of which are exhibited and sold at Toscana Studio and Gallery (Toscana) in Oro Valley. Rosano was born in New Britain, Connecticut in 1939 to Italian immigrant parents. In 1960, he was going to register for college, but when he looked out a window and saw snow, slush and a light coating of soot, he told himself, “I just can’t do this.” Instead, he went to a bookstore and bought a map. He tore off the northern half of the map and looked at cities along the south. He settled on two cities, Tucson and San Diego, because they were both close to Mexico. Flipping a coin to make the decision, it came up Tucson. “Twenty-four hours later, I was here,” he recalls. His first job was working as a dish washer at the Arroyo Café for 10 days. After that, he was hired to wait tables at the old El Conquistador hotel in El Con shopping center. At the time, Rosano’s sister had just started doing mosaic work with Italian glass, and he decided he liked the medium. Still working his day jobs, in 1973 he became a journeyman steamfitter after a five-year apprenticeship. 24

A lot of that trade involved welding, and he now combines metal and glass in his art. A spry octogenarian, at 82 years old, he is grateful for his life journey. “I never thought I’d reach 60, because I led kind of a wild life. When I turned 60, I told my kids, ‘60 is the cake and the rest is icing.’ I’ve had a wonderful life full of experiences and crazy things,” he reveals. One of the most salient of his adventures transpired in 1960, which was memorialized in Rosano’s book, Scoot Across the USA. While he was a waiter at the El Conquistador, he met an airman who was being transferred. He bought a slightly used 1959 Lambretta Motor Scooter (Italian-made, like the Vespa, top speed 43 mph). Upon learning his sister was getting married in Connecticut, Rosano took a zig-zag path from Tucson to the east coast on his scooter. This impulsive and somewhat perilous journey involved a

Now That Was a Good One by Aureleo Rosano

circuitous route via Tucson to Denver, where he met an exceptionally beautiful woman who was going to New Orleans. “I told her, ‘What a coincidence, so am I,’” and the two of them went together to New Orleans. From there he went to Chicago, Jacksonville, Boston and New Britain, arriving in time for the wedding. Rosano volunteers at the Toscana, where he likes to teach children. He jokes that, “Kids are so original, I like to steal their ideas.” In addition to volunteering, he teaches mosaic classes for beginners and advanced students. He has authored the book, Mosaics with Rosano: A Beginners Guide to Creating Artful Mosaics. “The goal of the book is not to provide a reference source into every aspect of mosaic work, but rather to provide a guide for a beginner to create a relatively small art piece—a mosaic with some genuine bragging rights,” he explains. Rosano’s personality exudes a certain joie de vivre which is sometimes reflected in his work. The mosaic “Red Forest, Yellow Burro” was a slowly developed surprise for Rosano. As he tells the story, “I just had the urge to create a reddish woodland, began to cut long elegant strips of red glass while a few of my students were engrossed in their own projects. Next was the placement of the glass, with which I felt extremely comfortable, and finally, I began to glue pieces in place. My thoughts had gone no further than that when one of my students asked, ‘What is going to be inside that red forest?’ I answered completely in jest, ‘Oh, maybe I’ll just put a yellow jackass in there.’ Three or four days later, when I got a chance to work on the mosaic again, I laughed at my own nutty idea, then thought maybe not so nutty,” he relates.

What mosaics are you working on now?

I’m working on two large custom logo pieces for the Casa Blanca Community School. The pieces use vitreous and stained glass and each one features a desert roadrunner.

What music are you listening to at the moment?

All my life I’ve listened to jazz. I’m enthralled with the Modern Jazz Quartet, Miles Davis and Stan Getz. I also enjoy music with Brazilian influences. One of my favorite pieces is “The Girl from Ipanema”, a seemingly simple composition, but actually rather complex. Background 1, 2 & 3 by Aureleo Rosano

How did you get the moniker Rosano? The reason people started calling me Rosano is that people had problems pronouncing my first name.

What is it that seems special about creating a mosaic art piece? “Certainly, creativity itself is satisfying…but the mosaic process seems to satisfy some inner part of ourselves…more so than drawing on paper or painting on canvas might. Creating a mosaic is a therapy, a meditative process, and at the same time, tactile, requiring that each piece receives some attention and handling by the artist,” Rosano observes. The art Rosano creates resonates with his audience because his pieces serve as a metaphor for a variety of contexts. One mosaic hanging on his living room wall that he calls “LIFE CYCLE” resembles an EKG result. It symbolizes birth, life and death. “The mosaic process can reach into our subconscious and touch our soul,” he notes. 26

My glass nippers.

What would you do if you were given $1,000,000 today?

What inspired you to make the trip across the U.S. on a scooter?

I’d have a few sculptures enlarged, and I’d open a big school for mosaics with no charge. For me that’s so much fun, to teach students and watch people grasp ideas.

Why do you mosaic?

I know you like lasagna. What is your favorite restaurant in Tucson?

I was inspired by On the Road, a Jack Kerouac book. I figured if he could do it, so could I.

Aureleo Rosano

What item would you be lost without?

Mosaics were my first interest in the visual arts. When I was a kid, I fiddled with pebbles, seeds, feathers and bits of glass as mosaic material, gluing these together to create a picture. When I moved to Tucson, my older sister was doing mosaic work with Italian glass, and I was smitten. Several factors contribute to my 60+ years of involvement with mosaic making. Most attractive are the qualities of the material itself…hypnotically beautiful, colored glass, in thousands of colors and variations, each fragment playing its small part in the light show of a completed work. In my work there are occasional metal pieces combined with the glass…all the materials being durable and, with little maintenance, able to endure for centuries. It is these factors—beauty, durability and permanence— those are the attractions. Additionally, with mosaics, there is a certain “something”.

If you weren’t an artist, what would you do?

If I weren’t a visual artist, I’d be a writer. I enjoy writing essays and books.

I like Caruso’s. I’ve been going there for 62 years. I met the current owner when he was five years old, running around the restaurant getting in everyone’s way. It has a great patio and standard food at reasonable prices.

Do you have a favorite quote or motto on creativity?

Yes, my creative process depends on not being afraid. Don’t be afraid to be different. Don’t be afraid to fail. Try something. And don’t be afraid to break all the rules. That’s it! Your Diet Can Affect Your Dental Health Foods can be beneficial or detrimental to the oral cavity, depending on the contents of the food as well as the amount of it over time. For instance, an iced tea with sugar is fine during a meal but can be detrimental to the oral cavity when sipped throughout the day. It is also not necessary to cut out all of life’s pleasures to maintain your teeth decay free. Eating a few pieces of candy in one sitting is ok if not done a little at a time throughout the day as long as teeth are cleaned properly after. A vegetarian diet is correlated with higher risk of dental erosion if hard to chew during consumption but has a lower risk of leading to cavities. Cavities cannot form without some type of carbohydrate (typically sugar) and oral bacteria.

Here are some tips to help ensure that whatever your diet may be, your teeth can remain healthy: • Drink water frequently throughout the day. This will help to reduce the oral bacterial acids. • Foods can soften the enamel and brushing too soon after eating can literally brush your teeth away. Try swishing with Closys rinse to balance the PH in the mouth after eating and wait 30 minutes to brush. • Chew gum. Gum made with pycnogenol, pine bark/sap, or xylitol has been shown to decrease plaque as well as the risk for cavities. • Eat whole, nutrient rich foods. These will help you get enough calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin K (especially K2) and vitamin D. Foods like leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, hard aged cheeses, plain yogurt, meats, natto, beans, mushrooms, fish, eggs, and organ meats all work here. • Brush thoroughly, and do not forget to floss prior to it! Cleaning the teeth surfaces as well as those tight spaces in between the teeth will ensure that you reduce the risk of cavities, no matter what your diet is. • Follow up with your dentist regularly. Here at E Dental Solutions, we understand that everyone is different. We cater to our patients needs and do not use any “one-size-fits-all” treatment plans. We will discuss how your diet is impacting your dental health and work with you to make sure that your mouth is the healthiest it can be.
