It has been beautiful to see our local businesses and practitioners continuing to help the community in whatever ways they can, while still maintaining safe distancing practices. Check out our “Virtual Event Briefs”, starting on page 8, to learn about trainings, consultations, classes and more currently available online—as well as some great free resources to help us get through the next few weeks. I would also like to extend my gratitude to this month’s contributing writers, who jumped on board with our Apprentice Writer Program, contributing the Artist Spotlight (page 26) and Community Spotlight (page 36) articles in this issue. We have received so many responses to our recent shout-out for aspiring writers, eager to take part in this opportunity to learn from professionals and be published. I am very proud to offer the program and am also super appreciative to my editor, Michelle Bense, for providing the edits and feedback so that these writers can hone their skills. During this challenging time in our lives, I hope that you find some of the tools you need in these pages, in our community, and in yourselves. Be well,

It is my sincere hope that our lovely community is staying well, staying home (if possible) and staying safe. We’ve been dealing with unprecedented times, and from what I’ve seen so far, we’ve been doing so as gracefully as can be expected. This month, we’ve chosen to run articles we thought would be helpful, nourishing and provide some relief as we traverse these tricky coronavirus waters. From our feature, “Healing the Immune System”, to the etiquette of wearing face masks, to treating the kitchen as a sacred space—there is plenty of useful, fun and soothing information in these pages.

Vegetarian Fare Curbside from Govinda’s Natural Foods Buffet

W

hile many are looking to support local food businesses when ordering takeout, Govinda’s Natural Foods Buffet is open for curbside vegetarian fare seven days a week. Takeout service is available from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a natural foods luncheon for $7.95. The menu is posted on the website, GovindasOfTucson.com. Resiliency, courage, dedication and devotion are trustworthy qualities of steadfast leadership. Under the guidance of Sandamini Devi and her husband, Dhiro Datta Prabhu, Govinda’s Natural Foods Buffet has withstood a devastating fire and now, in this confined time, also continues to serve the greater Tucson community with takeout curbside service. In service to the Hare Krishna philosophy, put forth by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada, the restaurant prevails. Now more than ever, it is essential for people to realize the importance of vegetarian cuisine. The menu is prepared with a mindful mood and conservation in the heart. The cooks at Govinda’s are longtime devotees of Lord Krishna. Tulasi and Manohar, Govinda’s cooks, have quietly stood behind the kitchen doors for over 18 years preparing a plant-based diet. One of the hallmarks of Govinda’s resiliency is its steadfast devotion to the high ideals that keep the devotee community healthy and active. The Hare Krishna movement is based on chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra. It is also well known that the mantra is a sacred sound capable of producing spiritual transformation. The devotees understand that by upholding certain regulative principles, they will eventually go back to Godhead. That is a standard of the Hare Krishna Movement. Vegetarian cuisine is also holy and will take us back to healthy. The residents of Tucson’s Hare Krishna Temple are remarkable in their determination, and these devotees who live within the temple community keep the restaurant cooking. For more information, call 520-792-0630, email sandamini108@gmail.com or visit GovindasOfTucson.com. Location: 711 East Blacklidge, Tucson.

Urgent Need to Help Keep Tucson Botanical Gardens Going

T

he Tucson Botanical Gardens was forced to temporarily close due to the community-wide response to the coronavirus. The loss of income from admission tickets, meetings, classes, weddings and events is devastating to the organization. “This temporary closure could outlast the Gardens’ financial capability to survive, and our community’s help is needed now more than ever,” says Executive Director Michelle Conklin. Please consider making an emergency gift to help support Tucson Botanical Gardens today. “We absolutely must find a way to guarantee that there is a Garden to re-open,” says Conklin. “Without your support, we face the inability to keep on staff the very people who care for the plant collection and animals on the property— like the Horticultural Manager and the Butterfly Curator. Without our team, TBG’s existence is under threat. None of us knows how long this situation will last, but we are working to maintain critical staffing to manage through this crisis. Your support today will help.” The Tucson Botanical Gardens is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization. Donations are tax-deductible. Location: 2150 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson. For more information and to kindly make a donation to help support Tucson Botanical Gardens, please visit TucsonBotanical.org/ donate-now. May 2020

Ayurvedic and Vedic Astrology Consultations via Zoom

J

osh Whiteley, a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and educator, and a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist in the state of Arizona, is currently offering Ayurvedic consultations for immune support and cleansing on a discounted sliding scale rate. Starting immediately, Ayurvedic and Vedic astrology consultations can now be had online via Zoom through the stay-at-home order. Whiteley is the owner of Rupa Ayurveda, in Tucson. With the recent closure of the brick-and-mortar clinic, there is now an option to maintain our Ayurvedic health practices during this time. Rupa Ayurveda offers accessibility to selfempowered health care from home at an affordable price. “Ayurveda offers a holistic, high quality and effective means of health care to the individual through its tried and true principles,” says Whiteley. “Whether you are struggling with serious health concerns, or simply interested in learning how to apply Ayurvedic principles to your daily life, an Ayurvedic consultation will be of great benefit in guiding you along your path.” Ayurveda is often translated as “the science of life”. This centuries-old medical system originates from the Indian subcontinent and is a form of traditional healing that uses nature as a guide to maintaining the well-being of the individual and a balanced relationship to the larger world itself. More than just a system for treating illness, Ayurveda is a guide to the wisdom of life and longevity itself. For more information, call 575-425-0283, email Info@RupaAyurveda.com or visit RupaAyurveda.com.

Pay-What-You-Wish Chakra Balancing, Soul Clearing Trainings Online

T

he Pampered Skin Studio office is temporarily closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Suzanne Pear, RN, PhD, LE, Certified Quantum Energy Practitioner, will not be able to offer in-person aesthetic services until this ban is lifted, but there are remote services available that may be more suitable for these challenging times, including free meditation and forgiveness practice trainings, as well as pay-what-you-wish chakra balancing and soul clearing sessions. Sessions are available via phone or video call. Handouts will be sent via text, email or snail mail. “In this time of global sheltering in place, social isolation and economic upheaval, we may all be having difficulty controlling our anxiety about the future as well as spending too much time dwelling on the past. The Healing Breath Meditation Practice works for everyone and it’s simple. Spend one minute or 20 getting grounded and centered,” says Pear. “Performing Forgiveness Practice is the best gift we can give ourselves as we release our attachments to negative memories and relationships, so we can be awake to the opportunities of this time.” These two trainings are free. Chakras are the seven primary Energy Wheels that distribute our life-force energy or chi, qi or prana to our organs and glands. When these circular vortexes become disturbed through emotional or physical trauma, they may become unbalanced and/or blocked, causing “disease” or the beginning of illness. Keeping our chakras balanced allows all of the body’s energies to be used for optimal immune function and healing. “Free yourself of vows, agreements and implants that no longer serve you. Let your spirit feel light and free once again,” says Pear. Chakra Balancing and Soul Clearing Sessions are regularly $149, but during the pandemic are offered as “pay-what-you-wish”. For more information, call 520-400-8109, email DoctorSuzie@ PamperedSkinStudio.com or visit PamperedSkinStudio.com. See ad, page 4.

Qigong Classes Available Online

M

ark Frighetti, who typically teaches ZY qigong at the Healing Arts Qigong Center, in Tucson, is currently offering these classes online, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday, and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Friday. Grand Master Mingtang Xu, the lineage holder of Zhong Yuan Qigong, has created this online meditation, and has received many thanks from people around the world that have or have had the coronavirus. “The most powerful way to take control of our own health is by doing qigong,” says Frighetti. “My teacher developed the Ming/Hua mantra to help us strengthen our lungs, connect to a powerful flow of energy, compassion, joy, love and an inner quiet. I have been leading the mantra online since March and it has been well received.” Qigong has been around for over 5,000 years and only recently have we begun to understand the importance of these ancient practices. Qigong moves energy into a unified state with the physical body. In these times, building our immune system, calming anxiety and improving our health is our highest priority. For more information, call 520-404-8745, email QigongMark@yahoo.com or visit Meetup.com/TucsonZY-Qigong-Meetup. May 2020

Free Guided Meditations from Soul Attunement Energy Healing

C

OVID-19 is a very powerful catalyst at this important time in our evolution. It has provided the species a much needed break from focusing on external life to a focus on inner life, if inclined to make that choice. Businesses are being forced to make changes where they can, from in-person interactions to virtual interactions. In her own business, Soul Attunement Energy Healing, owner Laura Tuzzolino is beginning the process of making those types of changes as well, by offering pre-recorded guided meditations, beginning with a recording on stress management that she is offering free of charge. The recording can be found as part of her blog on stress management. This will soon be followed with more offerings on topics of current concern such as fears concerning money, health and relationships, to Laura Tuzzolino name a few. Tuzzolino has created Facebook Live recordings on creating and implementing healing intentions in regards to the virus, and will be continuing these recordings in conjunction with blog post topics in the weeks to come. “Please read my blogs, listen to the stress management recording and if you feel the desire, leave me a comment or a suggestion for improvements or future blog topics,” suggests Tuzzolino. During this stressful time, Tuzzolino gives thanks to a personal hero of hers, Becca Briley, a Success & Guidance On Call Head Coach for Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, located in Phoenix. “I have had many moments of self-doubt and frustration while moving from being a full-time online student with the school to becoming a wellness practitioner promoting myself and my business,” says Tuzzolino. “To be very honest, I began this journey to find a way to heal myself. That outcome has morphed over time to become someone who serves others through facilitating healing and helping clients step into their highest potential in each moment. Becca has been at my elbow (figuratively) every step of the way. I have been touched and sustained by her guidance and spirit in many, many ways. My hope is that everyone may have someone in their life right now that is also providing them this kind of love and support. I humbly offer my support in the same way to all those in need.” For more information, visit SoulAttunementEnergyHealing.com or Facebook.com/SoulAttunementEnergyHealing.

Landis recently offered an open Q&A “Chat with a Self-Care Coach.” The session focused on sleep and anxiety and also delved into age-old questions to which Landis brings paradigmshifting fresh consciousness: “How do I motivate myself to healthier choices?” and “What does ‘self-care’ really mean?” A recording is available of this session, which also comes with a “Sequestered Self-Care Starter Kit”, a folder containing the recording and all the resources that were mentioned during the call, including: sleep and meditation resources handouts; stress/anxiety herbs and flower essences handout; Keys to Motivation for Healthy Choices eBook; 15 Ways to Reduce Sugar eBook; and a list of her favorite curated online trainers/workouts. Daily Online Circles with Web of Life Animist Church

I

n response to the needs of our community near and far, Web of Life Animist Church is hosting at least one online circle each day of the month of May. Many wonderful healing and intuitive Animist practitioners have stepped up to host their offerings online so we can stay connected. The Web of Life Sanctuary closed when the National Emergency was called in March. “Using Zoom allows our members to connect through video during this time of isolation,” says Animist Minister Quynn Red Mountain. “Nineteen skilled and intuitive practitioners hold space for our stories, journeys, emotions, pain, inner peace, somatic meditation, breath and sharing in virtual circles during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Every week, Web of Life hosts: a Weekly Fellowship Service on Saturday at 3 p.m. MST, a Soothing Anxiety Circle on Tuesdays at noon MST, a weekly Death Conversations Circle on Wednesdays (at 4 or 6 p.m. MST), an online Animist Coven on Saturdays at 6 p.m. MST and a Friday Upliftment Circle at 5:30 p.m. MST. Most circles are for anyone who feels called to participate, and some circles are LGBTQ+, Womxn and Womxn of Color Only Spaces (see website calendar for specifics). Since money is challenging most of us now, all circles are offered on a deep sliding scale ($0-$20). To support those who are feeling nervous, fearful and challenged now, Web of Life also offers personal sessions of Divination, Intuitive Messages, Clearings, Drum Journeys for Guidance and Grief Release. For more information, call 520-954-2004, email EarthWebMedia@gmail.com or visit WebOfLifeAnimists.com/events. See ad, page 14.

and sanitizer. At this point, either we have it, or we don’t, right? Those who have it can consider themselves among the blessed few. Whether we are trying to make it at home or purchase it, we have to be aware of a few key factors. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says to look for Isopropyl Alcohol between 60 and 89 percent, with 70 percent as the sweet spot. Why not 90 or 100 percent alcohol? Anything 90 percent or higher is designed to clean things that can’t get wet, like computer components and electronics. It evaporates too quickly to kill any virus or bacteria. In addition, anything 79 percent or above can really do damage to our skin, making it crack and peel and leaving it more vulnerable to the elements. We want to make sure that there is moisturizer in the hand sanitizer, like aloe vera or glycerol. Scent can also be important so the smell reminds us not to touch our face.

Fewer than seven hours of sleep for a child is not only linked to anxiety, depression, impulsiveness and cognitive difficulties, but also impacts a child’s brain structure, suggests new research from the UK’s Warwick University published in Molecular Psychiatry. Researchers used data that included MRI scans of more than 11,000 children ages 9 to 11 from 21 centers in the U.S. Parents also provided information about their child’s sleep duration and mental health conditions, and children performed a battery of cognitive tests. Researchers found that compared to children that slept between the recommended nine and 11 hours, those receiving less than seven hours had 53 percent more behavioral

The Magic of Microcurrent Energy Medicine

A

ll of our life functions are directly or indirectly associated with electrical activity. The rapidly growing field of Energy Medicine encompasses many disciplines whose common thread is the recognition that all disturbances in the physical body and emotions are directly linked to imbalances of this vital energy or chi/qi. Microcurrent electromagnetic treatment uses gentle, often sub-sensational electrical currents applied through acupressure points delivered in the millionths of amps range to restore that balance. These subtle energies are more harmonious with the body’s innate bioelectric activity than the high-intensity milliamp currents used in traditional TENS electro-therapy, often providing significant improvement to a number of dis-eases such as neck, shoulder and back pain, fibromyalgia and nerve pain, allergies and asthma, to name a few. Additionally, skin care professionals use microcurrent to substantially improve skin laxity over time, as it stimulates muscle memory and boosts product penetration by up to 80 percent. These microcurrent properties help support our aesthetic homecare regimen and may significantly extend the rejuvenating benefits of dermal fillers, Threads and Botox, as the facial muscles regain and retain their youthful tone over time with a treatment series. Suzanne Pear is a Registered Nurse with a Doctorate in Epidemiology, a Licensed Aesthetician and Certified Quantum Energy Practitioner. At the Pampered Skin Studio, she performs Energy Light Rejuvenation treatments which couple microcurrent and LED light therapy to provide “whole body healing disguised as a facial”, using customized energy frequencies and products tailored to the client’s “current” needs. FINDING CALM During Trying Times

F

by Laurie Nadel

rom the moment we wake up and log on to our day, we are flooded with news about people whose days started off much the same, with an expectation of going from point A to point B, to lunch, to point C and then back home. But something happened. A tornado touched down in the neighborhood. Or a train derailed in a cousin’s hometown. Or, like now, an invisible killer stalks the globe, threatening to take our life or the life of someone we know. Within seconds, we are flooded with horror and helplessness. Unable to stop the cascade of acute stress hormones, our bodies shift into fight-or-flight mode or leave us frozen like deer in the headlights. Whether we see what is happening online, on screen or in real time, we feel unsafe in our own skin. Although disturbing images can be swiped away, when something bad happens to us, we don’t know what to do. We can’t change the channel. Even during these tough times, we can find opportunities to develop new strengths and grow individually and together. To start with, we need emotional first aid to help us find calm quickly. We can do this by locating the tension points in our body and asking them what color would help them feel calm. Then we can inhale that color, letting it find its way within to soothe our cells, and exhale our stress by breathing out a different color.

We can repeat this technique as long and as often as needed. Teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, report that this really works for kids, too. To heal means to make whole. It doesn’t mean to make something go away. Hardship is part of life’s journey. Even this global pandemic can serve as our spiritual wake-up call to learn how different spiritual traditions heal from life-shattering events. Five gifts offer us the keys to wholeness: n Humility helps us accept what we cannot change.

make their lives better so they can finally bring their dreams to life, for a better world. NWBW offers individual functional and culinary wellness programs and, later this summer, group programs focusing on holistic, functional and culinary nutrition, mindset and bodywork and other autoimmune health resources. The dynamic Women’s AutoImmune Wellness, Naturally program, founded by functional and culinary nutritionist Dawn Urquhart in 2020, will provide an online, guided group program for women with autoimmune health challenges. Within an online learning space, women will have educational and practical resources for holistic health using functional and culinary nutrition, lifestyle, mindset and community support so that they can feel their best, using a natural approach to health. “As someone with an autoimmune challenge myself, I knew that learning from home reduced stress and yet having community support made lifestyle changes

so much easier. I created this welcoming and safe program so that you can learn at your own pace, have step-by-step guidance from me and a group learning environment where we help and support each other to achieve better health,” says Urquhart. The program was originally developed based on Urquhart’s own wellness journey and refined working with other women in one-on-one practice. “After years of seeking resolution to my symptoms, with much trial and error, I honed in on all the pieces of my health puzzle and feel better than I have in many years. With my desire to find answers, I went back to school for functional nutrition and holistic health. Now, my mission is to help other women find their optimal health solution, so they feel empowered by knowledge to maintain good health into their thriving futures,” says Urquhart. Ideal participants are women who have an autoimmune challenge (or think they might) and feel they have tried everything without any changes in their symptoms and are ready to make a commitment to their nutritional and lifestyle changes in order to feel their best. CDC on Homemade Cloth Face Coverings

T FACE MASKS 101 Tips, Care and Etiquette

C

by Shauna Smith

ontrary to popular belief, we don’t wear fabric face masks to keep COVID-19 out of our bodies, we wear them to keep it in. Washable, reusable fabric face masks help keep water vapor and spittle, the vehicle that carries live viruses, contained. Because this stealthy virus can live for weeks unknown inside our bodies, we wear this mask out of respect and concern for those around us. The future has arrived. When we see someone who is a point source in a place of commerce, such as a cashier, a delivery driver or a cook, without a mask on, we can politely ask them, “Why?” These people could be infecting many other people every day they work, and the ripple effect is exponential. The truth is evident that collectively participating in wearing a mask in public is an important practice in helping to control the expansion of COVID-19 and many other illnesses. With so many styles of face masks to choose from, what do we look for? First, a good fit. A mask should have complete coverage of the nose and mouth and stay in place while we talk. There are many people wearing their masks on their chin, with the nose and mouth hanging

out. This happens because as we speak, many styles of masks slowly migrate down off the nose, meaning we must use our hand to keep it in place. This is not possible when working a register or filling an order. It is also dangerous to put our hands on our face or near our eyes. The second thing to look for is comfort. It should be something that can be worn all day with ease, and be easy to breathe in. Materials to avoid in a face mask: • Knits (stretchy or spongey fabrics), which do not filter well • Synthetics, which allow COVID-19 to survive longer on their surface • A mask with any filter not intended for breathing through—especially Pellon or fusible interfacing General face mask care: • Wear one side out to the world and the other side in until it is washed. • Wash the mask daily. A bowl of hot, sudsy water is fine. We just don’t want bacteria to grow on it. • If a mask may have been contaminated, boil it for a minute. It may shrink a little. • Store dirty masks separately from clean ones.

he U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has several recommendations regarding homemade cloth face masks and coverings. These guidelines can help us make safe decisions involving the wear of homemade face coverings. CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure. Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, or anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance. NAK Sewing and Design Lab is continually working on developing the most comfortable and well-fitting fabric face covering on the market, with future products to include an active style for heavy breathing and a summer style for hot climates.

Connect with Shauna Smith at 520-2619548, NAKMasks@gmail.com or order online at NAKMasks.com. Masks are $10 each. They can be picked up at Campbell & Fort Lowell, or delivered for $7 per package—up to 20 units per package. May 2020

Healing the Immune System

Autoimmune Breakthroughs Offer New Hope by April Thompson

S

ome 23 million Americans suffer from one or more autoimmune diseases—a category comprised of more than 80 conditions, including fibromyalgia, Hashimoto’s disease, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and Type 1 diabetes. These pernicious disorders are notoriously difficult to diagnose, even harder to treat and can be debilitating, diminishing the quality of life for sufferers. Another commonality is the increased prevalence of autoimmune disease in women versus men; in the case of lupus, for example, a nine-fold difference. Some early indicators are that this may be related to a “gene dosage effect”, as men with XXY chromosomes have the same risk of developing lupus as other women, and women with XXX chromosomes (known in medical parlance as “superwomen”) have an even higher risk of autoimmune disease, according to Judith James, chair of the Arthritis & Clinical Immunology 18

Tucson Edition

Program at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, in Oklahoma City. Yet there is hope on the horizon, as scientific discoveries unlock important insights about the manifestation and progression of autoimmune diseases leading to new treatments and prevention tips. Evidence is also mounting around the role of diet and lifestyle in autoimmune conditions, giving patients new avenues for taking charge of their health instead of simply waiting for a cure. Autoimmune diseases are chronic and can affect almost any part of the body, including the heart, brain, muscles, skin, eyes, joints, lungs, kidneys, glands, digestive tract and blood vessels. Each disease carries its own set of symptoms, but inflammation is nearly always present, and are all connected by how the immune system attacks the body’s healthy tissues. “Those shared characteristics hold the potential for shared

treatments, and ultimately potentially common cures,” says Jane Buckner, president of the Benaroya Research Institute (BRI), at Virginia Mason, in Seattle, which works to advance the prediction, prevention, reversal and cure of immune system diseases. “I’m excited about our progress toward prevention. We are working to understand those tipping points in transitioning into disease that help us understand who is at highest risk, and helps give very directed therapies,” says James.

Self-Healing from Autoimmunity

By her early 20s, Mickey Trescott, of Willamette Valley, Oregon, was bedridden and had lost her job to autoimmune disease. At one point, doctors thought it was multiple sclerosis (MS); she was dizzy, numb, falling over and slurring her speech.

bluedog studio/Shutterstock.com

Eventually, she was diagnosed with both Hashimoto’s and celiac diseases, affecting the thyroid and small intestine, respectively. Trescott, a nutritionist, chef and author of The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook, had been vegan for 10 years, but had a feeling that her body needed something different. She found an early version of what would become known as the autoimmune protocol (AIP), and in following its guidelines, began to find relief. Trescott connected with other women and started a private Facebook group to share information on what was improving their condition from which the AIP community sprung. AIP, an elimination diet that seeks to reset the immune system by cutting out inflammationcausing foods and treating leaky gut, has much in common with the paleo diet and promotes vitamin- and nutrient-rich foods. However, every individual comes out of the AIP process with a customized diet. For Trescott, “Gluten is a forever-no, and I am also allergic to dairy and sensitive to a lot of nightshade vegetables, like tomatoes and peppers.” It took three years to recover most of her functioning, and although she had been a personal chef, it was still challenging to determine a new approach to eating that didn’t include the grains and legumes that had been staples of her diet. Trescott is still on medications, including the same thyroid support

Physician, Healed Thyself

she’s relied on from the start. “There is a misconception that the AIP is an alternative to conventional medicine. We really pride ourselves on using all the tools in our toolbox, including surgery, medication and lifestyle changes,” she says. Anecdotal successes like Trescott’s have led researchers to pursue funding to test the AIP’s efficacy. In a pilot study of 18 individuals with an average sick time of 19 years that didn’t respond to traditional medication, 73 percent were in clinical remission at the end of the trial, having followed the AIP. “It was a small sample size, but the results are promising,” says Trescott.

Like many physicians, Terry Wahls focused on treating her patients with drugs or surgical procedures—until the Iowa City doctor was diagnosed with MS in 2000. Within three years, despite conventional medical treatments, her back and stomach muscles had weakened to the point where she needed a tilt-recline wheelchair, and by the summer of 2007, she could no longer sit up. Though Wahls had been a vegetarian on a low-fat diet for 20 years, she went back to eating meat and gave up all dairy, wheat and grains, but still wasn’t improving. Delving back into the science of her condition, Wahls realized that mitochondrial support was key, and the speed of her decline slowed while taking a cocktail of vitamins to support its functioning. It wasn’t until she took a comprehensive approach to optimize everything she could take in through her food rather than relying on supplements that she saw radical results: Her brain fog, fatigue and pain went away and she biked around the block for the first time in six years. “Taking in nutrients in the form of food rather than supplements, you get related compounds and thousands of others in biologically anticipated ratios,” explains Wahls. “I still do take some supplements, but the magic is the food.” Those key ingredients, says Wahls,

However, even researchers focused on pharmaceutical approaches acknowledge the importance of diet and lifestyle. Meggan Mackay, professor of Molecular Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, at Northwell Health, in Manhasset, New York, believes this can play a critical role in disease management. She cites numerous studies showing exercise as a stress-buster positively influencing disease outcomes, as well as a more specific

study looking at the benefits of adding fish oil and vitamin D to the diets of lupus patients. “The rise in obesity, which is linked to increased inflammation in the U.S., may be one of reasons we are seeing more autoimmune disease than ever,” says Mackay. At-risk individuals should be aware of factors under their control, adds James. “If someone is worried about autoimmune disease running in their family, monitoring and maintaining adequate vitamin D levels and avoiding smoking and other high-risk behaviors can help improve their chances.” Even sleep patterns can play a role in disease manifestation, says the researcher. In one study, individuals at high risk for autoimmune disease that slept less than seven hours per day were more likely to develop an autoimmune condition, according to James.

Common Links Serve as Research Clues

There are some clear links between autoimmune diseases, such as the genetic predisposition that runs in families. “Someone with rheumatoid arthritis may have a sister with celiac disease, for example, and

include magnesium, zinc, selenium, sulfur, amino acids, cholesterol, omega-6 and omega-3s, fats, carnitine and creatine. Her rule of thumb for daily intake is three cups of leafy green vegetables; three cups of sulfuric vegetables like cabbage, mushrooms and onions; and three cups of deeply pigmented vegetables, plus sources of protein for meat eaters and vegetarians. While her work was initially not accepted, today she has funding from the National MS Society and her research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. “Basic science is now showing that the microbiome has a huge impact on the immune system activity and the brain; the food we eat can turn gene expression on and off,” says Wahls, who hasn’t taken any drugs for her autoimmune condition since 2008. Buckner cautions against patients trying to manage disease with lifestyle changes alone, without giving available allopathic treatments a fair try. “People do better if they are treated early and aggressively. They are reliant on fewer medications down the road and don’t have permanent damage if they seek treatment early.”

Gliding toward Immunity: Management, Awareness and Prevention

A

s of this writing, we are under a pandemic siege by something we cannot see without microscopic magnification, inundated by notices of illness avoidance plastered on store front windows, pop-up reminders on social media and spam-clogged email accounts. These communications are stark reminders of our interspecies vulnerability, basic needs and fragility of living. As a planet, we have crossed both personal and economic thresholds that are unprecedented. Pathogenic organisms are replicating machines that are impervious to emotion, borders, or religious, moral or political beliefs. Our current reality makes us the perfect hosts for them to thrive. Catastrophe management is not the complete answer as it cannot save us from lack

of planning for certain disaster. However, what does come into focus, is the acute awareness that we are out of balance in relationship to each other and with natural law. We are truly in transformation. Now is the time to co-create the future of our health and well-being by making the choice for conscious prevention. What health looks like in the post global pandemic isolation begs the question: “How can we strengthen our immune systems to stay well?” To begin to understand the concept of how our immune system functions, let’s start with the word’s origin. Immune comes from the Latin root “in” (not) and “munis” (ready for service). The full Latin meaning of “immunis” was used to mean “exempt from public service or charge”, which evolved into late Middle

English term of “immune” as in “free from liability”. As a noun, “immunity” is the definition of “an organism to resist a particular infection or toxin by the action of specific antibodies or sensitized white blood cells.” As a verb, “to make immune” means “to render a pathogen harmless or ineffective”. Thus, one can say that the immune system is the secret service that protects the body like sentinels are to castle moat and walls. The strength of Asian medicine is prevention. Wholistic cosmological theories are based upon centuries-old observations about nature and continuums of change interfacing outside the body and within it. An acupuncturist looks at the weakest links in body systems by assessing a web of patterns for improving their function. When patterns of relationship are in disharmony, they are distressed and open to destructibility at the deepest levels. Just like there is diversity of ecosystems in nature, organism categories co-exist together with fluid or solid boundaries. There is a popular cultural saying, “Water which is too pure has no fish”, which suggests that the relationship to the natural world does not operate in a vacuum. Fish require food nutrients and oxygen to live but sterilized water is inert. In developing an exceptionally functioning immune system, acupuncture and herbs can help us harness the ability to care for our bodymind-spirit as it relates to its own uniquely special ecosystem of conditions and cofactors. In fact, the efficacy of acupuncture is so good, there is trouble keeping up with the demand of supply for herbs. Although there is no cure for our ultimate mortality, we can allow our sense of impermanence to motivate us toward improving the vital qualities of our lives. After all, who will live in our body if we don’t choose to become our own advocate for it? Acupuncture works. Wendy Becker, LMT, Dipl. DANCING TO YOUR OWN DRUMMER The Healing Power of Movement

Luis Molinero /Shutterstock.com

M

by Marlaina Donato

ovement comes in many colors, from modern dance to country line dancing, and there’s something for everyone, including those that claim to have two left feet. Dancing is healthy for the heart and improves cognitive function by forging new neural pathways in the brain. It builds stronger bones, helps balance and improves flexibility and endurance. Putting on dancing shoes also has a positive effect on depressive disorders, flooding the brain with endorphins that uplift mood and jumpstart motivation. Dance has found its way into the clinical setting as a psychotherapeutic tool for healing trauma, eating disorders and addictions.

Dancing, in essence, is for everyone. “Dance is a human right, a feature of almost every culture in the world, and our natural inclination to dance is one of the things that makes us human,” says David Leventhal, program director of Dance for PD, a nonprofit Parkinson’s Disease program of the Mark Morris Dance Group, in Brooklyn. Valerie Durham, a modern dancer in Baltimore specializing in the Isadora Duncan technique, concurs, “Birds don’t consider if they have talent for singing, they just sing. They sing because they have a voice. Similarly, dance is a right offered to anyone with a body.”

A Deterrent for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease and Cancer Going dancing on a Friday night also proves to nourish the brain. A 2017 study published in Frontiers of Aging Neuroscience shows evidence that dance increases white matter that diminishes with cognitive decline. An older study sponsored by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and published in the New England Journal of Medicine spotlights data gathered during a 21-year period and reveals that regular social dancing can reduce the risk for dementia in seniors by 76 percent. “A number of peerreviewed research studies point to dance’s ability to improve motor skills and function of people living with Parkinson’s disease— balance, gait and tremor. Dance is expressive, giving people a creative voice when it feels that their capacity for physical, vocal and facial expression is being taken away,” says Leventhal. Durham, who worked with patients at the University of Florida Shands Hospital Arts in Medicine Program in the 1990s, witnessed memorable responses from cancer patients. “We danced with patients who were attached to IVs and those even in the ICU, some who were partially or even completely paralyzed,

people who maybe could dance only with their eyes. And yet they danced,” marvels Durham. “Getting the lymphatic system, endorphins and breath flowing all elevate the body out of pain mode.”

Dancing from the Soul All forms of dancing have the capability to free the spirit and heal deep emotional wounds buried in the memory-holding fascia of the body’s soft tissues. Ecstatic dance, which has roots in ancient spiritual practices, is an unstructured option that dilutes limiting, self-conscious habits. These days, ecstatic dance gatherings have been organized in cities around the world. “There’s a vast movement in the dance world that has nothing to do with performance, but rather, is done for the joy of inhabiting a body in motion. Ecstatic dance is a free-form conscious dance and is a vibrant global community for people who love music and movement,” says Donna Carroll, founder of Ecstatic Dance International, in San Francisco. “When we can be courageous enough to turn away from our cultural norms that say you need ‘talent’ to dance, we get a chance to experience music through our bodies, and it can be quite pleasurable and life-affirming. Ecstatic dance is one of the most effective methods to return to what matters, to our bodies, to our ‘home’, and is accessible for people of all abilities.” In her artistic sphere of performance art, Durham has seen her students blossom from the inside-out. “They are able to connect with the deep wisdom in their bodies, thereby releasing old energetic wounds. Depression and anxiety are relieved during dance because you are so consciously consumed with the present moment of the steps and the music. Dancers will find that they feel more joyful and at peace at the end of a dance session.” For Leventhal, moving the body is a blessing for all: “Dance should be accessible and enjoyable to everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges.” Marlaina Donato is an author, composer and painter. Practical Magic

Soul Nourishment The Kitchen As Sacred Space by Marlaina Donato

I

n our busy lives, grabbing food on the run or eating while standing at the kitchen counter is often the norm. Designating the kitchen as a practical sanctuary and seeing the sacredness of food not only makes it more conducive to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but also gives our spirits much-needed satiety. “If we don’t touch the transcendent— emotionally and spiritually—physical nourishment won’t fill us up,” says Ronna Kabatznick, Ph.D., former psychological consultant to Weight Watchers International and the author of The Zen of Eating: Ancient Answers to Modern Weight Problems. “Seeing the kitchen as sacred is something that represents gratitude, beauty and blessings.” Delia Baron, co-author of Better Together Kitchen: Beautiful Recipes to Share With People You Love and the host of seasonal food workshops with partner Ronnit Hoppe in Melbourne, Australia, concurs, “The kitchen is often the heartbeat of the home and the best place to gather, feast, chat and create beautiful memories and rituals. The kitchen is also a place to connect to our food source.”

24

Fun and Felicity

Preparing meals the old-fashioned way can slow us down and foster mindfulness, but Kabatznick emphasizes that cooking is irrelevant. “Look at the kitchen in terms of possibilities: ‘What can I create in this space?’ You don’t have to turn into Julia Child,” she says, adding, “You could be eating Chinese takeout or a prune; it’s all about mindset and simple rituals like saying a blessing, appreciating what we eat as a great gift.” Kabatznick encourages everyone to eat with dignity, and this includes using the good dishes, putting fresh flowers on the table and eating with awareness. Seeing the kitchen as the inspired nucleus of the home, it’s natural to add favorite items like art prints, colorful jars, sentimental treasures, dried flowers and other seasonal delights to nourish daily contentment. Conjuring an element of joy adorns the mundane. “Put on some music to put you in either a peaceful or joyful mood,” says Molly Larkin, author, healing practitioner and blogger at Ancient Wisdom for Balanced Living (MollyLarkin.com), in Corrales, New Mexico. “Turn off the TV and give everyone in the family a job.

Meal prep can be enjoyable and even relaxing in a calm environment. For Baron, organization is key. She advises, “Having all the ingredients you need and working in a clean space also helps make the experience rewarding.” The smallest of kitchens can be abundant and organized with the help of a little innovation. A simple bookcase can offer additional shelf space for dry goods, bowls of produce or favorite cups. A small end table can hold a favorite tea pot and a jar of gourmet dark chocolate. A beautiful basket can hold go-to spice jars, and a pretty pitcher near the stove can accommodate a multitude of cooking utensils. “If you can’t fit it all out of sight in a cabinet, get some glass jars, fill them with grains, flours and legumes and line them up on the countertop. It will be neat, and you can see what you have,” suggests Larkin. In the end, a well-nourished body and spirit fosters a beautiful life and inspires the same in others. An advocate for supporting the hungry in all communities, Kabatznick underscores local efforts and seeing the big picture of our relationship with food: “Taking out the garbage and cleaning up is also a sacred act if we bring that attitude into it. Food connects us to the Earth, the moon and the stars. From the seed to the truck driver—everything and everyone involved—the process of food is miraculous.” Marlaina Donato is the author of several books and a composer. Laugh throughout the meal preparation. Dance as you cook. Do the same thing if you live alone.” Preparing food, whether a healthy smoothie or a gourmet weekend dinner for two, is a way to express love for ourselves and others. Baron loves the presence of plants, lovely ceramics and interesting platters and dishes, and notes, “Families can definitely shop, chop, cook and mealplan together to make the kitchen a fun place to be. Doing these things together is very bonding and sends the message that looking after yourself is important.”

Stepping through the Veil by Pat Dolan

Pat Dolan: Giving Voice to the Voiceless by Teressa J. Hawkins

P

atricia “Pat” Dolan is a mother, teacher, visual artist, published author and practicing shamanic healer in Oracle. Originally from Lake Bluff, Illinois, north of Chicago, she dabbled with art in high school but never thought it would become her life’s work. During her sophomore year at Trinity College, in Washington, D.C., she met Dr. Liliana Gramberg, her printmaking teacher and mentor. Dolan attributes being an artist and teacher to Gramberg, who had faith in her as an artist and always offered encouragement. Shortly after graduating with a degree in Art History, Dolan honed her drawing skills at the Accademia 26

Tucson Edition

di Belle Arti, in Florence, Italy in 1970. She returned to the States and went on to receive her master’s in Visual Design from the Institute of Design in Chicago. In the summer of 1979, a friend of Dolan’s told her about a thriving artist community in Oracle, Arizona. She soon arrived at Rancho Linda Vista to find an inspiring community, where artists were living, sharing studios and producing art shows together. Dolan was only supposed to be there for a month, but kept extending her time until finally, she decided to move to the Ranch permanently. At the Ranch, Dolan met and began immediately collaborating artistically with

Charles Littler. “We worked through the stages of our relationship using art as our medium. Together, we both started doing the kind of work that neither of us had done before,” explains Dolan. Littler was a painter and created string drawings, while Dolan’s work was in printmaking and pastels. Littler and Dolan became a powerful artistic duo, and their creative collaboration evolved into a marriage in 1982. Through their partnership, “Ruby Lee” was born, an environmental art collaboration that they shaped together for 12 years. They created “Trail Mix”, a fouracre sculpture walk that included temporary site sculpture Pat Dolan

art installations in Rancho Linda Vista. Other projects they conceived were “Duets”, a series of pastels with geometric lines and “Pictures”, another outdoor performance piece that had a series of installations. They also each continued to do their own individual work during these years. When Littler died suddenly in November of 1991, this ended Ruby Lee and left a hole in the hearts of many residents at the Ranch. Dolan’s grief made it difficult for her to remain on the Ranch. Six months after Littler’s death, she began leading Shanti grief groups to support people that were terminal. Dolan was devastated, but left the Ranch with her son to begin a quest to understand grief, death and her roots. She decided to dig into her ancestral background and went to Ireland in 1994 with her son Patrick, exploring the culture and learning about Celtic Shamanism, Druids, pre-Celts, gods and goddesses. She began to reclaim what was really true to her. Dolan has studied many levels of shamanism and has worked with shamans in different countries. She studied Shamanism with Michael Horner and Sandra Eggerman. She has learned about Tibetan, Hawaiian, and more recently, Egyptian Shamanism. All shamans connect in the same place. Her artwork expresses her shamanic experiences in non-ordinary reality and demonstrates how all of us and all living beings are connected. In 1996, Dolan and her friend Erica Swadley, from the Central Arts Collective, discussed doing a new show and came up with the idea of a show on death. “Death: A Round Trip Ticket” was a show that 30 artists participated in, making urns for ashes and shrines for a loss in their life. They invited artists and poets to do a page commemorating a loss in their lives. It included interviews with people about what it was like to be with someone they loved when they died. Dolan notes that not many really delved into death as a topic back then. Out of that show, next came “Sweet Chariot”, a collaboration between Swadley and Dolan in which they led workshops using art projects to support people

processing their grief. Currently, Dolan has two mentoring groups that she is working with on Zoom. She meets with them for four afternoons a month, individually, and as a group. Dolan primarily works with senior adults at the studio, but, alongside fellow Drawing Studio teacher Lunn Fleischman, cofounded ArtMoves for children, an outreach program for vulnerable populations Transformation by Pat Dolan that incorporates art and movement. Additionally, she does a VA outreach with Veterans at the VA home and subsidized housing for vets. Today, Dolan still resides in Oracle, where she creates her art from her yurt studio and loves using the circular space. She has worked with pastels since 1981, but took 10 years off to do encaustics, sumi ink and cold wax. Now she creates gouache paintings, an opaque watercolor that can be painted over, making the colors more intense. She is working on a piece using an older painting that she did of Brigid, a Celtic goddess, as a prototype, and has made paintings of friends who have passed away as a form of art therapy. She thinks about aging now, and a future project for her would be to create a community for older adults similar to how life was at the Ranch. “There are many people that are single and aging who need each other and would be healthier in a space where creativity is valued and encouraged, Dolan says. She believes that this is a discussion that needs to be developed into a reality. Currently, the Drawing Studio is a place where many older adults do come together, explore their creativity and are nurtured, even though it is not an actual living community. Dolan says that her job as an artist is to give a voice to the voiceless endangered animals, birds and their habitats. She is deeply concerned about what is happening to our planet and how our lifestyles are creating Global Warming. She sees her work as visual prayers, asking the viewer to see these animals and remember that once we felt a connection to all life and we lived in a way that sustained us all. If we remember these connections, we can create a future for all of us. Connect with Pat Dolan at BrightFlame@ mac.com, PatDolan.net or on Instagram@ brightflame108.

Using Journal Writing to Reduce Stress

W

by Nancy Andres

e are living in difficult times, and statistics and news reports about the COVID-19 virus may challenge our coping capacities. Our routines have been disrupted and our face-to-face social connections are on hold for now. That’s why it’s key to check in with ourselves daily to find life affirming ways to nurture our mental, physical, spiritual and emotional health and thrive. Journaling can be a great stress reducer. A journal is more than just a place to document experiences and record thoughts. Studies indicate that journaling helps us get in touch with many of our concerns. Journal writing can help us process troubling thoughts or feelings, and transform our attitude and behavior from fear and lack to ease, grace and abundance. A 2013 study published in Journal of Affective Disorders showed an everyday expressive writing practice is associated with significant decreases in generalized anxiety disorder symptoms, including worry and depression. Despite the advantages of

journal writing, we may hesitate to start a personal journal and are unsure about where to begin. The key is to take a leap and write the first one or two words on a pristine page. The rest will follow. No need to create extra tension thinking of how, when or where to journal. No need to buy a fancy journal. Any notebook, journal or bound book will do. Any comfortable place to sit will work. For best results, be mindful while opening the journal, lift a pen or colored pencils and put pen to paper. This tactile, meditative way of writing helps ground us and acknowledge our feelings and frame of mind. Writing things out awakens our senses, and anchors us to the here and now. As a starting point, we can use journal writing to express sadness, loss or any worrisome thoughts we have about losing our livelihood, getting ill or distress about others succumbing to this disease. We need to be kind, caring and compassionate with ourselves by affirming “we have a right to our feelings”. In turn, it helps to recall that

millions of people are challenged right now. We can use this information to be compassionate for them as well. Releasing our pain out onto the page and then ripping the page out of the book and shredding or burning it in a safe receptacle is a symbol to our mind and body that we have let it go. This purging process creates space for healing. We may then be able to journal in detail about our progress, hopeful signs, small victories and dreams for the future. Focusing on positive aspects helps us feel relief, or at least gives us the endurance to deal with the new normal of hand-washing, social isolating and precautionary health measures. Once we do that, we can choose to recognize and record our gratitude for having the motivation or willingness to walk, run or exercise in nature or indoors, eat healthy food, work from home and feel gratitude for first responders, merchants, farmers, delivery people and the dedicated people who are keeping our communities going. Wherever we are at the moment, journaling can help us feel better about ourselves and today. Personal journal writing is a skill and art—one that can be practiced daily for free. After all, a journal may prove to be akin to having a superb friend or coach, a confidant who is available to listen respectfully and without advice giving, whenever needed. Taking a few moments a day to journal can be empowering. It is a dedicated place to write down the pros and cons of issues, sort through options and select a course of action. When we do the footwork to still our minds and create peace within, we can focus on being part of a caring global community that comes together for our common good. Use journals to reap rewards of enhanced health and well-being today. STOPPING TO SMELL THE ROSES

M

by J. Garnet

ost people are probably pretty sick of reading, watching or hearing about COVID-19. Who wouldn’t be; it’s everywhere and it’s been the central focus of the media for months now. People are frustrated, scared, uncertain and angry. It’s to be expected, so being kinder and gentler with these emotions is best. According to Psychology Today, stress weakens the body’s immune system and has a negative effect on every major organ in the body. Obviously during trying times, stress can creep in and be counterproductive to the challenge of remaining healthy, strong and safe, both physically and mentally. There are countless natural methods that help lessen or eliminate stress, and 30

during this time when most people are honoring and giving gifts to their mothers, it’s Mother Earth who is honoring and giving her inhabitants everything that’s needed to banish stress, remain calm, happy, strong and healthy. Tens of millions of people have been out of work, and not only are they feeling trapped inside, but are also uncertain about the future. That’s stressful! Routines have been altered and many are at a loss for what to do with themselves. People who’ve worked 20, 30, 40 or more hours each week are finding it difficult to stay busy. Reading, watching movies, cooking, designing fun activities for children or napping can get old rather quickly.

NaturalTucson.com

In this geographic area, where the climate is moderate, people can get outside for long walks, bike rides, tending their gardens and jumping into projects in order to stay busy. Many are finding out, however, that it’s more difficult to fill the time in a productive way, day after day and week after week. Being outside and remaining active can certainly help lessen stress levels, but everyone could benefit from a good dose of Mother Nature to help the cause. According to NASA’s Earth Observatory, 30 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with plant life. Whether eaten for nutrition, smelled, viewed, picked or planted, plants have been shown to reduce stress. Now may be a good time to get to know our plants better, and to give them some extra attention. Take a look around the yard. Notice the plants that grow along a walk or bike path. Search out the splashes of color from one of the many blooms that are budding now in the desert. Are there plants inside the house? Outside? It doesn’t matter. Next time the plants need watering, take a moment to thank them, talk to them—and try doing it out loud. There’s a connection that takes place that can be soothing and comforting. Spring brings new growth and life, so prune off any of the old and welcome the new. Admire and acknowledge the beauty and the life force that the plant has within it. It’s almost impossible to remain stressed or negative while doing any of these activities, plus it will help pass the time in a most productive manner. When the news of the pandemic spread, there was a rush to stock up on supplies that are needed in the home. Some of the first products that flew off the shelves were disinfectants, hand sanitizers, protective surgical masks, soaps, bleach and humidifiers. As most people know by now,

PLANT MEDICINE the coronavirus attacks the respiratory system. As with symptoms of the common cold, flu and allergies, the lungs are targeted. So what is there to do in order to keep the lungs strong, happy and healthy? Some experts have declared that masks are necessary, though other experts have claimed that a face mask doesn’t protect as well as people originally thought. In order to stay healthy, people are being told to do this, don’t do that, try this and stay away from that. With so much conflicting information circulating around the world, it’s reassuring, to a degree, that people can look toward Mother Earth for some answers. It’s the most opportune time to stop and smell the roses—and all flowers, for that matter. Some people have been innovative with their time, finding ways to stay happy and healthy using plant medicine. There is now time in the day to investigate the aloe plant and how to make homemade hand sanitizer. People are learning which plants are the best air-purifiers. Spider plants, palms, ferns and lilies are some of the more effective species. Herbal teas are being used for medicinal purposes. Some teas are physically calming like chamomile or peppermint, while others can offer an energy boost— green tea and ginseng, for example. Licorice root and peppermint teas have also been shown to support the respiratory system. There are countless plant remedies to help strengthen the lungs and respiratory system. No matter the cause of the problem, it’s a good idea to help maintain healthy lungs, and Mother Nature has provided everything that’s needed to do so. Granted, many people do not have some of these specific plants or teas at home that could be useful right now, but knowledge is key and the common cold, flu and allergy seasons seem to be present all the time. Being aware of the magic of plants can help keep the medicine cabinet and pantry well stocked for when the remedies are needed again in the future and to help feel a little more prepared for future health events both small and large. In a society that’s normally running at double-speed, it’s awkward to have so much down time. Many people have been reading, knitting or planning virtual happy hours and digital gettogethers. But even after coming up with lots of activities, it seems there’s still time on people’s hands. It’s an ideal time to do some of the footwork that’s needed when contemplating the change from pharmaceutical medications to a more healthy and beneficial plant medicine route. Knowing the medicinal benefits of nature’s inventory can only help in preparedness for the unknown. Beating illness, disease and stress doesn’t have to be as difficult when armed with knowledge. J. About one in 10 babies in utero struggles with a dangerous condition known as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), in which the flow of oxygen and nutrients through the placenta is restricted, hampering development of the growing fetus. Now, a simple solution—of mom drinking an eight-ounce glass of pomegranate juice a day—offers hope of a way to reduce infant deaths and lower the need for infant surgery. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, studied 77 mothers with IUGR at St. Louis’ Barnes-Jewish Hospital that received either one cup a day of pomegranate juice or a placebo. Evaluating 55 of the babies’ development with MRIs after birth, researchers found that the babies with pomegranate-drinking moms had evidence of both better brain connectivity and development of white matter—tissue through which messages pass in the central nervous system. Pomegranate juice is a rich source of polyphenols, a class of foods also found in nuts, berries, vegetables and teas that’s known to cross the blood-brain barrier and have neuroprotective effects.

NATURE BASICS:

SAFETY 101

F

rom a very early age, safety is taught to children. Looking both ways before crossing the street or not talking to strangers are a couple of the basic safety skills that children understand and carry with them into adulthood. Safety skills can also center around cleanliness and warding off germs, bacteria and viruses. Washing hands before a meal, brushing teeth before bed and maintaining good health are other safety tips that children learn growing up. It’s been a strange new world for the last couple of months, and safety has been on most people’s minds. Essential businesses remain open because of the necessity of those industries, and safety first is being spotlighted throughout them. According to the Mayo Clinic, a whopping 70 percent of Americans are on at least one medication, so it’s not surprising that establishments that maintain and distribute these medications are at the forefront of keeping the work, patient and customer environment safe. The insurgence of alternative medicine around the country, and the legalization of medicinal marijuana in some states, has led to the opening of dispensaries in order to cater to the individuals who have transitioned from pharmaceutical drugs to plant medicine. Like other essential businesses, dispensaries have taken steps to ensure the safety of their patients and staff. Ordering and obtaining medicine has changed in order to maintain a safe interaction. Online menus and order forms make it easy to browse products, investigate the medicinal values of the products and determine which product will work best for particular symptoms and ailments.

Unlike pharmacies which offer mail order prescriptions, eliminating any face-to-face contact, dispensaries needed to develop ways to minimize contact, keep patients and employees safe and get the medicine to the people who need it. The dispensaries here in Tucson have done just that. Precautions and changes in distribution happened almost immediately, and as the circumstances changed, they stepped up. Home delivery of plant medicines was already established for most dispensaries, but new curbside pickup has been instituted. Order the medicine that’s needed online, pay for the products online and wait for a confirmation text or email alerting the patient that the order is ready for pickup. There is still some face-to-face contact, but employees are masked, gloved and wiping down everything with sterilizing products. Medication can still be picked up inside the dispensary, but precautions have been put into practice as well. The dispensing rooms are for employees only. The employee will gather the products and bring them out to the waiting area. Only a certain number of patients are allowed in the waiting lounge at a time, and only valid cardholders are allowed in, while the people they are with can comfortably wait outside. A few of the dispensary lobbies have industrial sized air purifiers running at all times. Masked and gloved employees circulate waiting rooms wiping down chairs and surfaces, key pads and door handles. This level of precaution has rarely been seen at the corporate, big-box pharmacies. Like some grocery stores and other essential businesses, signage on dispensary floors alert patients of the safe six-foot radius from each other. At Earth’s Healing, a new cashless system has been incorporated. Alt Thirty Six is a digital money exchange system which eliminates the transfer of cash or card from the patient to the bud-tender. Many of the people who use medicinal marijuana have specific products that they purchase on a regular basis. These people have become their own health advocate. They’ve researched and tested numerous strains in order to find the right medicinal combination that works best for their own individual medical needs. One of the benefits of being in control of personal health is that when new issues show up, like a short stint of the flu, a seasonal allergy or a virus, they know and understand the products that can heal and speed up the recovery time. Stress is present whenever there is uncertainty, fear, anger and frustration. Now is a great time to actually experience the soothing and calming effects of CBD oils and balms. Stress can cause anxiety, muscle tension and numerous other negative bodily reactions. There are products available to help ease some of the harmful effects that stress can have on the body, mind and spirit. At Earth’s Healing, the budtenders all go through extensive training that can help ease the difficulty in understanding the “how to” and “how much” when looking for the natural way to heal. Virus Fighters

Essential Oils for Challenging Times In these coronavirus days, an essential oil mixture with legendary origins in the Bubonic Plague offers soothing scents for the homebound and might add some viral protection. The mixture of five oils: eucalyptus, clove, cinnamon, lemon and rosemary, is known as Thieves. As the story goes, in the 1500s, as the Black Death decimated Europe, when four unemployed spice merchants that turned to robbing the bodies and homes of the dead were captured and threatened with being burned alive, they confessed to the judge their secret to avoiding infection—the spice blend that they rubbed on their hands, ears, feet and temples. They were all hanged, but their formula survives as Thieves, and is today one of the most popular essential oil blends in the market, sold under that name and also as Five Guards, Health Shield and Fighting Five. Although shown to sharply reduce three kinds of airborne bacteria in 10 minutes, its antiviral properties have not been extensively studied. Its components, however, have proven antimicrobial, antiseptic and antiviral properties: n Eucalyptus, long used for respiratory infections, has been proven effective against a number of viruses, particularly the swine flu and herpes type 1 viruses. n Clove has exhibited strong antiviral activity against such viruses as the adenovirus type 3 respiratory virus, poliovirus and coxsackievirus. n Cinnamon leaf shows antiviral activity and can prevent pneumonia due to influenza. n Lemon oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties, and is often used in cleaning products.

n Rosemary eases stress and has antiviral, antimicrobial and antidepressant qualities. Thieves can be purchased in natural health stores or online. For a homemade blend, Jennifer Lane, an aromatherapist, registered nurse and founder of LovingEssential Oils.com, recommends combining these essential oils: n 35 drops lemon n 20 drops cinnamon leaf n 15 drops clove bud n 15 drops eucalyptus n 10 drops rosemary Adding five drops of the blend, along with water in a diffuser, can waft the scent throughout a room and diminish airborne odors and germs. For respiratory support, put a few drops into a cup of steaming, but not boiling, water, drape a towel around the cup and face, and breathe in the fumes. Add it to a carrier oil like jojoba oil or coconut oil at a 1:30 ratio (such as one-half ounce Thieves to 15 ounces jojoba) and rub it on pulse points in the wrist and neck. But do not ingest the blend. If a child under 10 is in the house, don’t diffuse it or use it topically on them, because rosemary and eucalyptus can be unsafe for a child, advises Christina Anthis, author of The Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started.

Inside, it is warm and friendly with a wide variety of hemp and CBD products including salves, oils, tinctures, balms and healthy edibles. Gutierrez is a patient and knowledgeable teacher who carefully explains dosage, timing and exactly how they can improve health. Anyone who has considered CBD or cannabinoids is familiar with the tremendous amount of information available and how much of it can be confusing. CBD vs. hemp, broad spectrum vs. full spectrum, total plant vs. isolate—buzz words that shoppers can spend significant time and energy wading through only to find that the research they have done is just to understand the basics. Ingredients can be confusing too; “active” ingredients may not be reflected accurately, and terminology may be incorrect. “We are not regulated at this point in Arizona,” says Gutierrez. “That means that manufacturers may not only label their products incorrectly, but the customer has no way of knowing exact ingredients and amounts.” Talking with Gutierrez, it is evident how strongly he feels about the direct role food has on healthy living and ultimately, the effectiveness of any CBD supplement. “We don’t carry any gummies at all,” he says, citing his emphatic belief in a holistic approach to health. Some of the popular products available in the CBD market, including gummies, are high in fructose and food coloring. “You can’t expect to improve your health if you ingest these types of ingredients,” says Gutierrez. Consumers are also confused about the differences—properties, benefits and risks—among CBD, THC and hemp. According to the National Institutes of Health, “cannabis” refers to all products derived from the plant Cannabis sativa, which contains about 540 chemical substances. The word “marijuana” refers

to the part of, or products from, the plant Cannabis sativa that contain substantial amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the substance that is primarily responsible for the effects of marijuana on a person’s mental state. Hemp typically has very low amounts of THC and a main distinction between hemp and CBD is the variety of plant they are derived from and what part of the plant is used. Dosage is another big question for many. Dosage is determined by volume, solution strength and how one’s body reacts. Gutierrez considers weight, body composition and overall food and drug intake to be major components in success. Tracking these components over time is key to finding the right balance. In addition to requiring a COA for each product sold, Divine Synergy only sources products of the total plant. There are two main forms of CBD on the market: broad spectrum CBD, also referred to as full spectrum, and CBD isolate. Cannabis, with its complex chemical structure, contains over 100 active cannabinoids in addition to CBD. In much of the current research, broad spectrum appears to be more effective in addressing many health issues.

gives plants odor), fulvic acid and 84 other minerals and electrolytes. “This combination drives the nutrients into the cells in order to hydrate and protect them,” says Gutierrez. Gutierrez says his biggest challenges are educating the public about the products and their ingredients and, most importantly, setting expectations. “Many think CBD products are a cureall,” he says, “but it is part of the bigger picture.” His preliminary questions for each customer pertain to other health habits such as food, exercise and stress levels. Gutierrez stresses the importance that CBD-based products are not, on their own, a quick fix. They contribute to overall health, as one component of a comprehensive view of our minds and bodies. In sourcing products, Eric also looks for other ingredients including terpenes, phytonutrients and others that work synergistically with the endocannabinoid system to provide the highest level of effectiveness and quality. Unlike other cannabinoids—such as THC—CBD does not produce a euphoric “high” or psychoactive effect. It produces some cannabinoids of its own, called endocannabinoids, which help regulate functions such as sleep, immune system responses and pain. “Our receptors are open to these,” says Gutierrez, who personally tests all the products he orders. He has learned to track the effects of all his products and can identify their quality and whether their intended use can be confirmed. He follows brands and products with “momentum” to see if they can stand up to his expectations. He draws similarities between agents introduced to the system that look directly for deficiencies, toxicities, inflammation and other ailments to address them at their root. In addition to Divine Synergy’s CBD and hemp products, Gutierrez has also created and manufactured his own product called Spectrum Water. Spectrum was designed to provide a high energy and healthy option to other drinks and includes terpenes (the ingredient that
