ild places are essential to our planet and our wellness. Explore some of the world’s important landscapes and learn about “Why We Need Wild Places” in this month’s feature article on page 24. There are also some tips on how to create more wild space at home, like replacing non-native plants with native ones, leaving the leaves where they lie and more. Another special, wild treat comes to us from writer Suzie Agrillo, who shares her unforgettable trip to the Galapagos Islands last year. Her research into the many creatures and nature that only exists there is fascinating—complete with plenty of colorful photos. Some local news this month includes a mental health program using ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, how to keep children safe from wireless radiation, slowing our cells’ aging and using meditation to refresh and renew this spring. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and we have included an important article on page 13, which discusses how we can get past the stigma of sexual assault and use helpful modalities to start to heal from the trauma that so many people have unfortunately experienced. Get out into the wild this month, appreciate this beautiful planet and be kind.

Free Eckankar Book Discussion of Spiritual Stress Relief

E

ckankar Arizona is hosting a free open book discussion of Spiritual Stress Relief, an e-booklet by Harold Klemp, Spiritual Leader of Eckankar, on April 16, from 4 to 5 p.m., via Zoom. The public is invited to participate, even if they have not read the book. In today’s world, change is constant. Often, change causes feelings of tension and stress. Where does one turn for peace, balance and rejuvenation? Can it be found beyond the mind/body awareness? Perhaps it can be found within, at the very core of who we are, Soul, a spiritual being deeply loved and cherished by the Divine. “The mind can overreact to the rush of everyday living, leaving us on edge and out of sorts. We forget that help is as near as a few moments in contemplation,” Klemp says in the e-booklet. “At least once a day, let the Sound and Light of God enliven you with spiritual impulses. Gently sing HU, and the silent wind of God will enter the sacred temple of consciousness in your heart.” HU (pronounced like the word hue) is an ancient mantra and sacred sound. It is sung with a feeling of love for the Creator of Life. It can open one to the healing current of Spirit and begin to restore peace and balance. For more information, call 877-300-4949, email Welcome@EckankarArizona.org or visit EckankarArizona.org. To experience HU, visit Eckankar.org/experience/ HU-the-sound-of-soul. See ad, page 26.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for Mental Health

A

t Tucson Counseling Associates (TCA), the team of highly trained therapists supports the healing of mind, body and spirit with the aid of ketamine. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a psychedelic assisted therapy with an emphasis on the psychotherapy. KAP is a relatively new approach that arose in response to the data coming out of ketamine infusion centers regarding seeing improvement in mental health conditions. However, most infusion centers are not doing concurrent therapy with the administration of ketamine. TCA believes that this piece is crucial, as this is what lends to long-term transformation. They offer a program that will prepare clients for their ketamine sessions, encourage them to explore their mind while within the ketamine space and assist them in integrating the experience afterward. As this field is new, and thus somewhat fragile, TCA finds it crucial to offer it in the utmost ethical way. To this measure, the team honors an ethics pledge that includes the following: “Tucson Counseling Associates respectfully acknowledges that we are located on the occupied lands of the Tohono O’odham and Yaqui peoples. We believe in holding healthy therapeutic and relational boundaries through letting go of our own agendas and listening to the needs of our clients. We believe in interconnectivity, and through healing ourselves we in turn heal our families, communities and the earth herself. We believe plant medicines/compounds are healers and teachers. We believe the narrative around the use of psychedelics should include all voices, not just those in the medical/ mental health fields.” TCA specializes in anti-oppressive outpatient psychotherapy services for children, teens, adults, couples and families. They empower clients to collaborate and take an active role in deciding treatment goals, frequency and duration. TCA is a teaching facility that provides clinical supervision and training to associate level clinicians and facilitates workshops and training for community members as well as professionals interested in working with clients in alternative relationships/lifestyles or psychedelic integration. Keeping Children Safe from Wireless Radiation

W

Photo by Syda Productions on Shutterstock

HAVE YOU REVIEWED YOUR MEDICARE PLAN IN THE LAST YEAR?

ith the growing number of wireless devices in our homes and schools, and of 5G cell towers in our neighborhoods, our exposure to wireless (radio frequency) radiation is rising rapidly. Today’s children are the first generation to be exposed their entire lives, starting in the womb, and they are uniquely vulnerable. Children absorb proportionally more radiation in their eyes and brains than adults, due to their smaller heads, thinner skulls and higher water content. These factors make them vulnerable to the well-established harmful effects of radiation, including cancers and reproductive harm. Studies specifically link children’s radiation exposure to rising levels of ADHD, cognitive dysfunction and behavioral problems. Meanwhile, more and more “smart” wireless products for children are on the market, from diapers and pacifiers to baby monitors, the latter of which can have extremely high radiation levels. These products are not safety tested—since their radiation levels fall within the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) exposure limits, they are assumed safe. This assumption is unfounded. Parents should know that in 2021, the FCC lost a landmark court case in which Federal judges ruled that it ignored the scientific evidence of harm to children in setting its limits. While we wait for policy to catch up to the science, here are some tips for parents and caregivers to take matters into their own hands. • Don’t buy wireless products marketed for children— especially not “smart” baby monitors. There are alternatives. • Teach children cell phone safety. • Never let kids use wireless earbuds. • Pregnant women should keep wireless devices away from the unborn child. • Keep children’s bedrooms radiation-free. Test and mitigate if necessary. Lisa Smith, Ph.D. is a Certified EMF Expert at EMF Wellness Tucson. Connect at EMF-Wellness.com/children-and-teens.

Slow the Body’s Aging with NAD

M

eet Nicotinamide-Adenine-Dinucleotide (NAD)—or Coenzyme-1. NAD is a derivative of Vitamin B3 and functions as a catalyzer or “helper” in every single cell of our bodies. NAD+ is necessary for our cells’ fundamental processes that make living possible, from metabolism to DNA health. Interestingly, NAD+ is in animals, bacteria and plants, as well. NAD+ is considered support for the skin and brain. In resetting our internal time clocks, it repairs damaged DNA and strengthens our cells’ defense systems. When we consider aging from the inside out, it is now more important to add in NAD, as it is the shuttle bus needed for slowing the aging processes. As a “helper” coenzyme, NAD works by transporting electrons from one place to another inside a cell. So, think of each NAD coenzyme as a tiny shuttle bus responsible for taking electrons to work inside the mitochondria (the part of the cell responsible for metabolizing nutrients). The more shuttle buses we have, the more electrons get delivered to the mitochondria. These electrons fuel chemical reactions that power the cell and keep our body healthy. In order to pick up electrons and move them from place to place, NAD triggers other reactions which keep the cell buzzing with life. When there aren’t a lot of NAD shuttle buses, fewer nutrients get processed by the mitochondria, and fewer reactions happen within the cell. As a result, cells begin to age and die. The body follows suit. NAD has two forms: NAD+ and NADH. This makes sense, because the NAD shuttle bus can exist in two different states: full of electron passengers and empty. To put it simply, NADH is the way that NAD is described when the shuttle bus is full of electron passengers. NAD+ describes the NAD shuttle bus when empty. For someone who has a healthy lifestyle and takes all their essential vitamins and minerals, their body already has what it needs. They may simply need to add more empty NAD+ shuttle buses to trigger the reactions necessary to turn all those kale smoothies into vibrant health.

CORRECTION: In our March edition, we included a News Brief about the Mystical Healing Experience, to be held in Tucson on April 23 and 24, featuring Neale Donald Walsch. While he is doing fewer live engagements these days, we would like to correct the previous statement that said this would be one of the last live events of his life. There is no plan for this to be one of the last of his life. However, the likelihood of him returning to Tucson for a live event after this one is diminishing. For more information, see ad, page 12.

Review Your Medicare Plan Yearly, Even If You’re Content

M

edicare beneficiaries should review their plan yearly. There may be a new plan that better meets current needs. Shopping for insurance can feel tedious and overwhelming. Perhaps that’s why many Medicare beneficiaries opt to stay in their current plan, even if it’s the one they were auto-enrolled into when they became Medicare-eligible. A Medicare review gives a chance to review benefits, decide whether the plan is working for one’s needs and prepare to possibly switch to another option. One of the most important reasons to review plan options is that new Medicare Advantage plans become available each year. For those who have original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan may cover additional services, such as vision and dental care. If already using Medicare Advantage, a different plan might better serve individual needs. Reviewing the options can help

Neale Donald Walsch

with selecting the plan that best fits one’s current health and financial realities. As our life needs change, so too might our Medicare needs. Moving to a nursing home or developing a chronic illness may mean that a Medicare Advantage special needs plan will be a good option. Some signs that one may need to change their Medicare plan include: paying more out-of-pocket for medical expenses, taking a new prescription drug that is not covered, seeing different doctors who do not accept the current plan or simply not having evaluated plan options in several years. It is always a good time to review Medicare coverage. Supplemental gap plan coverage that covers co-pays and services that Medicare does not cover such as co-pays for hospital stays and emergency services, dental/vision/hearing, cancer and critical illness and final expense coverage are available throughout the entire year. Holly Baker is an independent Medicare advisor in Tucson. She provides complimentary cost and coverage reviews to Medicare enrollees and helps clients fill the holes in Medicare. There is never a charge to the client for her services. Connect at 520-7692378 or Holly@LifeSolutionsAdvisors.net. See ad, page 10.

Healing from the Trauma of Sexual Assault

O

by Stephanie Harris

ne night, while at a party, visions were blurred, and it was unclear what was happening. Then morning arrived, with a flood of overwhelming feelings of confusion, and aloneness. First thing in site were clothes not intact. Scared and unsure what to do, the tears began flowing like a rushing stream. All that could be done was to attempt to cover-up with the ripped clothing and run home, hoping not to be seen. This nightmare is, for too many, a reality. “What she was wearing” is irrelevant. Everyone has a right to wear what they choose. It is others who need to control their urges. No one ever expects this to happen to them. According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), “Every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. Every 8 minutes, that victim is a child. Meanwhile, only 25 out of every 1,000 perpetrators end up in prison.” In Bessel Van Der Kolk’s, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Treatment of Trauma, he explores the biological effects of traumatic stress on the body, including how trauma rewires the brain. As Van Der Kolk describes, “Trauma is not the story of something that happened back then. It’s the current imprint of that pain, horror and fear living inside people.” Holistic Psychotherapist Elizabeth Eiten shares, “Trauma affects us psychologically, physically, emotionally, behaviorally, cognitively, relationally and spiritually. With that said, psychotherapy needs to be holistic and incorporate mind-body therapies.” Healing from trauma is possible. Some of the modern therapies found helpful in healing include: cognitive behavioral therapy; narrative therapy; eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR);

mindfulness techniques such as meditation or journaling. Acupuncture, yoga, somatic healing and massage are also great alternatives to traditional trauma therapy. There is no right or wrong modality. It is the survivor’s journey to follow the path they are drawn to. For a survivor on this journey, it will be helpful to work with people who are trauma informed and/or trained in sexual assault or domestic violence. They have chosen to do the appropriate training and specialize in healing trauma. Not everyone is trained in this realm. Sexual assault can happen to anyone. The main reason it happens is for power and control. Reach out, and begin the conversations. Remove the stigma. We never know who may be holding on to a secret that needs to be released. Remember this: the greatest gift we can offer a survivor is saying, “I believe you,” and, “How can I support you?” April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and traditionally the last week of April is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. This month, show support for survivors by wearing teal. Stephanie Harris is an Empowerment Coach at Courage 2b Me. Her passion and purpose is to help women transition through life after a major life change, empowered and grounded. Connect at Courage2bMe48@gmail.com. and cellular signaling. Phosphorus plays an important role in energy metabolism and intracellular signaling and is an integral component of membrane phospholipids, DNA and RNA.

MINERALS:

Inorganic Cofactors for Healthy Cells

M

by Keri Barron

Minerals for fluid balance: Potassium, sodium and chloride work together to maintain fluid balance within the body. High consumption of sodium may induce water retention and will eventually cause changes in arteries. High intake of potassium can counteract these effects at the cellular and tissue level. These minerals also transmit cellular signals through sodiumpotassium pumps which control the physiological excitability of cells. This mechanism coordinates many cellular processes, drives the transmission of nerve impulses and aids in muscle contraction. Chloride is also important in transmission of nerve impulses. Minerals for antioxidant defense: Zinc, copper and manganese are components of superoxide dismutase enzymes, which neutralize free radicals. Zinc is also required by more than 300 enzymes and binds to over 2,500 proteins—approximately 10 percent of all human proteins. Functions of zinc include regulation of bone homeostasis, blood pressure regulation, DNA repair and supporting multiple facets of reproduction.

Magnesium: Magnesium is one of the most essential cofactors and is utilized in over 300 metabolic reactions including protein synthesis, cellular signaling, blood pressure regulation and muscle contraction. Magnesium is also important in blood glucose regulation and is required for DNA and RNA synthesis and energy production.

Other minerals: While required in very small amounts, trace minerals serve important functions. Iron is required for the oxygen-carriers hemoglobin and myoglobin and functions in cellular respiration, synthesis of neurotransmitters and nutritional immunity. Iodine supports the thyroid gland, and chronically low intake can lead to development of goiter. Sew Sustainable

Photo by Darling Arias on Unsplash

by Shauna Smith

K

nowing how to sew in 2022 is an exotic skill. Sure, many homes have sewing machines tucked away in a closet somewhere and every once in a while, someone pulls it out and attempts to fill a hole in a pair of jeans or get two pieces of fabric to stick together long enough to get through Halloween. But to truly know how to sew is rare. Sewing isn’t an easy skill to pick up. Operating a sewing machine is simple enough after taking the necessary time to get to know the machine. The challenge comes from handling fabrics. Unlike a piece of wood or steel, fabric is unpredictable. It shifts and moves all over the place in unexpected ways. It must be pinned down to get it to behave. For millennia, fabric used to make clothes came from animals, plants and insects. Fast forward to today and the textile choices are endless, with new, chemically derived solutions being invented daily. In the news we hear about how wasteful the garment industry is and how the processes used in creating the fabrics we love are damaging the environment. In an 16

Tucson Edition

effort to make money in our fear-based economy, it is common for textile manufacturers to paint themselves “green”. A prime example is organic bamboo fabric. Yes, bamboo is a renewable source of wood. Organically grown, it is great for making wooden products. But, to turn that wood into a fiber that is soft like silk and absorbent like cotton is a very chemically and resourcefully intensive process. There are also concerns about land clearing and harvesting methods used in creating “organic” bamboo. To say organic bamboo sheets are sustainable is a stretch. While every step we take toward more thoughtful methods of developing fabrics is a step in the right direction, there is a difference between organic and sustainable when it comes to textiles. Organic is how the plant used to make a fiber or yarn was grown. Sustainable, on the other hand, means conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources. Inherent to sustainability is the idea that people won’t degrade the environment for short-term profits. While organic

NaturalTucson.com

farming methods for raw materials used in creating textiles is important to the health of the planet, that doesn’t guarantee a sustainable fabric. Some examples of sustainable fabrics include: hemp (low water usage), linen (low water usage), reclaimed (leftovers from manufacturing), recycled (made of discarded plastics) and vintage. Another idea for a truly sustainable fabric is one that is made wholistically— from the loom and the loom operator, to the quality of the yarn, the supply chain, how the employees are treated. Sustaining joy, art, beauty and skill as well as the environment while a truly unique piece of fabric is created. Over the centuries, textile artisans have created looms that weave intricate, almost magical fabrics: jacquards, dotted Swiss, true laces, brocades, tapestries and more. In our culture of fast, cheap fashion, these textile mills and fabric houses are closing down or switching to more modern and cost-effective methods so they can compete to exist. This is where true sustainability is lost. We lose the artisans, we lose the knowledge and we lose out on beautifully made fabrics. We are left with uninspiring, toxic and cheap fabric used to make disposable fashion. Maybe there is still time to preserve the most sustainable fabrics through education and exposure. The best place to start is with sewing. When we sew, we see and feel the fabric up close. The more fabrics we work with, the more we begin to understand quality and the more we question why we only paid $35 for that fully lined jacket with 15 pockets and a hood, or $20 for a full length curtain with pleats. Shauna Smith is a 50-year-old avid seamster of 45 years. She sees the universe as a web of textiles. A graduate from the Fashion Institute of Design in Los Angeles and the University of Utah with an emphasis on textiles, she is grateful to understand the world of fabric that surrounds us. reate a sustainable little object of joy for yourself. Like cooking for yourself, sewing brings a sense of satisfaction. It may not turn out exactly as planned, but you know what went into it.

Supplies: • fabric scraps (feel free to cut up that torn shirt you love) • a needle – sharps are good for plain thread or crewels for embroidery floss • thread or embroidery floss • rice • essential oils or scented herbs and flowers like lavender • ribbon or string • scissors Instructions: • Cut out a rectangular piece of fabric 5” wide by 13” long. • Fold the fabric in half, right sides together. • Sew up the sides 1/2” from the edges using a tight backstitch so the rice can not slip out. • Fold down the top edges 1” to create a hem. • Vine stitch the hem in place, leaving a small opening to send the ribbon or string through. • Flip the bag out. Feed the ribbon or string through the hem. • In a bowl combine the rice and your essential oils until it smells right. • Let the rice and oil mixture sit overnight, so the oil will settle into the rice. • Fill the sachet bag with rice to your desired level of plumpness. • Pull the drawstring. • Set the sachet in a spot where it will do the most good. Remember that the essential oil could soak through the fabric, so keep the sachet from touching things that will stain from the oil.

pring is a time when many of us clean out closets, cupboards or simply conduct more deep-cleaning tasks. We may even engage in clearing or preparing soil for gardening. It’s a wonderful time of renewal. Yet, we seldom take time to clear out our internal “closets” of emotional hurts, anxieties or fears—to prepare our hearts and minds for new, positive experiences.

Next, close your eyes for a moment. Breathe in the beauty, the warmth, the serenity. Open your eyes, and continue observing, quietly. Listen to the birds, to life around you. Once again, close your eyes and recreate your environment as an image in your mind. Make note of the peacefulness and serenity. Remember this feeling. Use this visualization back at home, or during breaks at work. It only takes a few minutes to create sanity and peacefulness, breath by breath.

TERS S A

F O

Meditation offers a way—not just to relax, which is a good thing—but also a way to soften emotional baggage we’ve been carrying around. It all starts with the breath. A simple practice begins by sitting in a quiet space, away from television, the computer and away from the phone. Just for a few minutes. To begin, sit in a comfortable chair and position. Make any physical adjustments, so that there is no bodily twitching. Start by closing your eyes and watching the breath. Observe the in-breath, making a mental note, “I am breathing in.” Note that there’s a pause before the exhale. Then, observe the out-breath, making a mental note, “I am breathing out.” Take another pause before the inhale. Continue for several breaths. If a thought comes to mind such as “I need to go to the store…,” we use a technique or mantra in yoga called the Neti mantra. When an extraneous thought enters, we say, “Neti, neti, neti.” It is simply a way to train the mind to realize, “I am not this thought. I am not that thought. I am not thought.” Gently focus your mind back to the breath. Keep repeating the breath observation and the mantra. You ay also mentally count the length of the in-breath and the out-breath, striving to make the in-breath and out-breath the same length. After a few breaths with a count, allow the breath to breathe itself. Don’t control it. Continue to observe it. When ready, open your eyes, allowing them to adjust to the light, and welcome your mind and body back to “the real world”. Performing this practice daily, even a couple times a day, helps produce a calming, de-stressing effect. It also helps increase concentration as it clears the mind of extraneous thoughts, and allows us to refocus on what’s important. Another technique takes us outside, enjoying the beautiful weather and a lovely setting. Consider practicing in a serene location like a garden or a park. Sit and observe the environment. Make note of the objects you see—flowers, trees, birds, the sky. Observe the colors. Observe the textures.

A Trip to the Galapagos Islands Living in Harmony with Nature by Suzie Agrillo

Sea Lion

I

n 1835, Charles Darwin traveled on a ship named the HMS Beagle and discovered a land with breathtaking creatures on the fabled Galapagos Islands. His observations of wildlife on the islands fueled his theory of evolution by natural selection. Galapagos is a group of magical islands

located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. These islands are a popular bucket list destination for good reason. When visiting the Galapagos, expect to explore a world thought only to exist in a science fiction film. It is an unparalleled experience which includes an education about iconic species, as well as profound insights into the evolution of life on Earth. My partner and I took a weeklong cruise to these enchanted islands in December 2021. Getting to the remote islands from Tucson is challenging. It involves a flight to Miami, then a second flight to Quito, Ecuador. After a night in Quito and a guided tour of the city, we took a small plane to the Baltra Airport on the Galapagos Islands, followed by a short bus ride, then a boat to our ship.

NaturalTucson.com

The inner loop cruise includes excursions to nine islands. Each island has unique things to see and do. Ecotourism and its monetary impact are the strongest and most rapidly growing forces to benefit the environment in the Galapagos. However, all travelers are mandated to respect the wildlife and habitats on the islands to avoid any negative environmental consequences. The cruise ship provides a variety of multiple daily excursions on small pontoon boats that take groups to the islands. The first wildlife to be seen on the beach is a colony of playful sea lions. They spend a considerable amount of their lives onshore, resting after feeding and playing in the ocean. The Galapagos Sea Lion is a smaller species of the Cali-

Red Vermillion fornia Sea Lion and originated from stray individuals finding their way to the archipelago from the west coast of Mexico. A first impression on hikes is that the animals are very tame and tolerate an incredibly close approach. The standard explanation given by the naturalists is that the absence of mammal predators over the eons has made shyness and fear unnecessary. Another feature of the Galapagos wildlife is the uniqueness of so many of the species observed. Many of them are endemic, meaning they cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. While hiking on the islands covered in rocky terrain, one may wonder how anything can live there—when suddenly, a bright orange and fiery red Sally Lightfoot crab scurries across the lava. It’s one of the most widespread crabs at the water’s edge, and they get their name from their habit of quickly scampering across the surface of the water for short distances, usually to escape danger. Sally Lightfoot Crabs and Marine Iguanas are respectively the brightest and the

Kicker Rock dullest colored creatures of the Galapagos sunbaked lava shores. They both depend on the sea for survival, making forays into the surf to eat seaweed, and yet they both spend most of their time above the tideline to avoid marine predators and to bask in the sun. Marine Iguanas eliminate excess salt by forcefully blowing concentrated droplets from their nostrils. Galapagos Land Iguanas are also admirably adapted to the extremely arid conditions of volcanic terrain. These bright, endemic reptiles can tolerate the extremely arid conditions of volcanic terrain. They often rely on cactus for food and water. Upon entering the water, the abundance

Greater Flamingo

of marine life will amaze. Sea Turtles have front legs modified into oar-like flippers which propel them through the water. Although they need to breathe, they can remain submerged for prolonged periods. The Galapagos Penguin occurs further north than any other penguin in the world. Standing only 16 inches tall, it is one of the smallest species of penguins. Bird watcher or not, one will see a plethora of birds in the Galapagos. The Greater Flamingo is a recent arrival to the islands. The naturalist guides give low expectations of seeing one, but we were able to find a group preening in a tidal pool.

Female Yellow Warbler Blue Footed Booby Parents Another bird which represents a dark side to extreme adaptations is the Flightless Cormorants, which have lost their ability to fly. They use their large, powerful feet to swim at high speeds, and strong beaks to catch many kinds of fish. They dry their stunted wings by holding them out to the air after every fishing trip. Frigate Birds make a unique bird species encounter. A magnificent male frigate tries to attract passing females by displaying his spectacular air-filled throat pouch. The Blue Footed Booby bird (Piquiero de Patoz Azul) is no doubt the most entertaining and emblematic of all the Galapagos seabirds. Their oversized feet serve not only for diving and capturing fish, but also as a vivid and striking statement in courtship dances.

Darwin’s Finches, drab black, brown and mottled birds, are initially unimpressive. However, the array of bill sizes and shapes of these birds is how Darwin helped formalize the theory of evolution. All the species of these birds evolved from a single colonizing species. Bigger beaks evolved to crush seeds—others with narrow beaks to eat fruit, insects and flower parts. On the final day of the trip, we spend the day on Santa Cruz Island, where the Charles Darwin Research Center is located. Everyone dons knee-high rubber boots and participates in a Scalesia planting in the Highlands. Lunch is a sumptuous buffet at El Manzanillo Ranch, with entertainment by local folk dancers. After visiting the Giant Tortoise Breeding Program, we take a short walk to view

Giant Tortoises in their natural habitat. Where else can one come face-to-face with a variety of Giant Tortoises? These ancient reptiles can reach 500 pounds in weight and have a lifespan up to 100 years. Giant Tortoises are the most famous reptile on the Galapagos, and they are now protected by local law. These tortoises were hunted and decimated by 18th century sailors seeking fresh meat for long voyages, because these tortoises can go for more than a year without drinking or eating. They are found on different islands and have different shells, illustrating special adaptation. The tortoises living on islands with sparse vegetation have narrow, arched, “saddle backed” types of shells that permit them to reach foliage on trees with their long necks. The tortoises living on moister islands or at higher altitudes where low vegetation is common and

easier to reach, have domed shells that protect the body and neck from danger. It’s all too easy to travel in search of new experiences, only to end up in a high ecological impact tourist trap, without much interaction with either the place itself or the people who live there. An ideal trip to the Galapagos includes contact with the locals, and an opportunity to experience wildlife that exists nowhere else on our planet. Prioritizing the planet is a mindset we can apply to everything we do, including a trip to get away from it all. An eco-travel trip to the Galapagos to experience natural wonders is a statement that will benefit the environment and create indelible memories of an incredible adventure. As Charles Darwin said, “The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.” Suzie Agrillo is a freelance writer in Tucson and is a frequent contributor to Natural Awakenings Magazine. Why We Need

WILD PLACES How to Invite Nature Back into Our Lives and Landscapes by Sheryl DeVore

O

n a blustery day, Julian Hoffman stood outdoors and watched wild bison grazing in the restored grassland of Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, fewer than 50 miles from downtown Chicago. For him, it was a wild place, affording a glimpse of what North America looked like hundreds of years ago when bison roamed the continent by the millions. “We’re witnessing, in a way that’s both terrible and tragic, just what the profound cost is of continuing to destroy the natural world,” he writes. Saving wild places is critical for human 24

Tucson Edition

health and well-being, say both scientists and environmentalists. But defining what a wild place is or what the word wilderness means can be difficult, says Hoffman, author of Irreplaceable: The Fight to Save Our Wild Places. “If wilderness means a place untouched by humans, then none is left,” he says. Even the set-aside wildernesses where no one may have ever stepped have been altered through climate change, acid rain and other human interventions. Humans are also losing the wilderness that is defined as land set aside solely for plants and creatures other than humans.

NaturalTucson.com

Prominent naturalist David Attenborough, whose most recent documentary is A Life on Our Planet, says that in 1937, when he was a boy, about 66 percent of the world’s wilderness areas remained. By 2020, it was down to 35 percent. A wild place can be as spectacular as Yellowstone, a 3,500-square-mile national park in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana, filled with hot springs, canyons, wolves, and elk. It can also be as simple as a sky filled with a murmuration, or gathering, of thousands of swooping starlings, which once caused two teens to stop taking selfies and photograph the natural

scene above them instead, as Hoffman witnessed in Great Britain. Such regions that offer vast tracts of natural beauty and biodiversity are even found in and around major cities like Chicago, says Chicagoland nature blogger Andrew Morkes. “A wild place is also where you don’t see too many people, or any people, and you can explore,” he says. “You can walk up a hill and wonder what’s around the next bend.” “A wild place could be a 15-minute drive from home where we can walk among plants in a meadow, or a treelined street, or front and back yard, if landscaped with wild creatures in mind,” says Douglas Tallamy, author of Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation that Starts with Your Yard.

danita delimont/AdobeStock.com

Sustaining Our Species

“We need these places to save ourselves,” says Tallamy, who heads the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. “Humans are totally dependent on the production of oxygen and clean water, and that happens with the continued existance of flowering plants, which are dependent on the continued existence of all the pollinators. When you lose the pollinators, you lose 90 percent of the flowering plants on the Earth. That is not an option if we want to stay alive and healthy.”

Our mental and emotional health is also at stake. According to a recent overview in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, studies have shown that natural settings can lower blood pressure, reduce depression and anxiety, and help the immune system function better. People have saved wild places over time, of course. “The world’s ancient redwoods are still with us today because people in the early 1900s fought to protect and preserve what they could already see was rapidly diminishing,” Hoffman says. “In the year 2022, we are the beneficiaries of those past actions. Yet less than 5 percent of those oldgrowth redwood groves are left, and we live in an age where we’re losing an extraordinary range of wild species; for example, 3 billion birds have disappeared from the skies of North America in just the past 50 years. That’s why people need to continue to fight for wild spaces.”

Community Crusaders In researching his book, Hoffman went looking for wild-space struggles. In Glasgow, Scotland, he met people that fought to save an urban meadow from being turned into a luxury home development. “I’d never experienced as much joy in any one place as when I spent time with the community fighting to preserve

this tiny meadow,” he recalls. “They campaigned and lobbied politicians, and eventually, the government backed down. And now the whole community is able to enjoy this site where a lot of urban wildlife thrives.” Once-wild places may also need human help to again become wild refuges. The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, where Hoffman saw the buffalo, “was once an arsenal for the production of extraordinary quantities of ordnance for a number of wars,” he says. After hundreds of die-hard volunteers dug out invasive plants, scattered seed and documented wildlife on the 18,000-acre prairie, visitors can now walk among big bluestem and golden alexander, and listen for the sweet song of meadowlarks in the grasslands and chorus frogs in the wetlands. Conservation volunteers working to save wild places hail from every state. In fact, nearly 300,000 volunteers contribute more than 6.5 million hours of volunteer service a year to the U.S. National Park Service, from leading tours to studying wildlife and hosting campgrounds. One doesn’t have to be an environmental crusader to save wild places, Hoffman stresses. Exploring local wild places and sharing them with others can help save them, as well. “We can only protect those places that we love,” he says. “And we can only love those places that we know.”

CREATING A WILD SPACE AT HOME In their book The Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden, University of Delaware ecology professor Douglas Tallamy and landscape designer Rick Darke show how to create wild spaces in yards, including what and where to plant and how to manage the land. They advise homeowners to: Stop using pesticides and herbicides. Replace non-native plants with those native to the region. Reduce lawn space, converting it to native plants. Leave leaf litter, withering plants and dying trees alone to provide shelter and food for wildlife. n Create a small pond or another water feature. n n n n

“Mourning cloak butterflies overwinter as mature adults. If you say, ‘Hey, let’s just clean up all of that so-called leaf litter,’ you could be cleaning up the habitat of mourning cloaks and killing them,” says Darke, who has served as a horticultural consultant for botanic gardens and other public landscapes in Texas, Maryland, New York, Illinois and Delaware. “That’s not litter. It’s meaningful habitat. “A dead tree in your home landscape, called a snag, often contributes as much to the local ecology as a living tree,” he adds. “For example, woodpeckers build nests in holes or cavities in a snag, and countless insects find shelter and nourishment in the organic material of the snag.”

Sadly, roughly 100 million people, including 28 million children, do not have access to a quality park within 10 minutes of home, according to The Trust for Public Land. Projects, such as the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Program, which enables urban communi-

ties to create outdoor spaces, can help. The U.S. Department of the Interior committed $150 million to the program in 2021. “Every child in America deserves to have a safe and nearby place to experience the great outdoors,” says Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.

A Homegrown National Park Tallamy says one of the most important ways to get people to appreciate and save wild places is to begin in their own yards. “We have wilderness designations. We have national forests. We have national parks. We have 12 percent of the U.S. protected from development,” he says. “Yet, we are in the sixth great extinction. Our parks and our preserves are not enough. My point is that we have got to focus on the areas outside of parks and preserves.” He urges what he calls a “homegrown national park,” in which homeowners, land managers and farmers create a habitat by replacing invasive plants with native species. Tallamy speaks from experience. He lives on a 10-acre former farm in Oxford, Pennsylvania. “It had been mowed for hay and when we moved in, very little life was here,” he says. “We have been rebuilding the eastern deciduous forest here, getting invasive plants under control and replanting with species that ought to be here.” He’s now counted more than 1,400 different species of moths on his property and documented 60 species of birds nesting within the landscape. “We have foxes who raise their kits in the front yard,” he says. Lots of acreage is not required, he

bill/AdobeStock.com

says. In Kirkwood, Missouri, homeowners created a wild place on six-tenths of an acre on which they’ve documented 149 species of birds. “If one person does it, it’s not going to work,” he stresses. “The point is to get those acres connected. When everybody adopts this as a general landscape culture, it’s going to help tremendously. By rewilding your yard, you are filling in spaces between the true wild places and natural areas. The reason our wild spaces are not working in terms of conservation is because they are too small and too isolated. Even the biggest national parks are too small or too isolated.” Tallamy says people can create wild spaces in their yards by reducing the amount of lawn they have or even getting rid of it. They can grow native plants and discontinue the use of pesticides and herbicides, which are disrupting ecological function of wild places the world over, as research shows. Hoffman agrees, “We’ve cultivated a culture of tidiness. It’s actually very easy to welcome wildlife into your home places, often by doing fewer things, by not bringing the leaf blower out and by leaving some dead wood where it fell, which creates important shelters for insects, for example. “Such wild yard spaces encourage wonder. Suddenly, the kids are out there and they can be absolutely fascinated by a small glittering beetle. For me, to experience the wild is to go to the shore of a lake, to be present in the mystery, to be among the lake’s reed beds, to see a marsh harrier sleek out of those reeds and to know you’re part of something much larger,” he says. “There’s so much joy and beauty and complexity in being in the presence of other lives besides human.” That in itself is reason enough to save wild places.
