We’ve been spending more time in our homes than ever before, so let’s focus on making it the best it can be for our mental and physical wellness. Read “Our Home, Our Mental Well-Being” on page 18 and “Healthy Home: How to Detoxify a Living Space” on page 25 for more. I would like to congratulate artist Howard Kline on 50 years of creating art, as we highlight him in this month’s Artist Spotlight. He will celebrate his 50 years of successful artistry with an open studio event on April 18. Read more and explore some of his art on page 20. A true Tucson treasure, the Fox Theatre has endured since 1930. Like so many other businesses—and especially event-focused businesses—they are getting creative about ways to thrive after so many postponed and canceled performances. But the show must go on, and you can learn more about the Fox’s interesting history, plus ways to support the gem so we have this institution for many years to come. Join me in celebrating the wonderful weather and the magic of Tucson in the spring.

Ukiyo-e: Japanese Woodcut Prints by Hiroshige at Yume Japanese Gardens

news briefs ennica Klemann, Advanced Grief Recovery Specialist in Tucson, offers relief for those struggling with their grief, specializing in physical and emotional grief work. She provides her grief coaching services in person and online. When we are in the process of purging our belongings, we are faced with letting go of Jennica Klemann memories—nostalgia from childhood, keepsakes from children who are now adults or things that were gifted by someone no longer living. “But will you grieve the loss of that fine china you have never, and will never, use? You may find that it’s more about the broken heart you feel from the loss of your dear loved one who gave it to you. All the unspoken thoughts and feelings, and the things you wish you could say but can’t,” says Klemann. “There are many ways that you can feel good about letting go of things without letting go of the memories. But if you feel that the process is too overwhelming and emotional, then starting with grief recovery may be the first step before tackling that next box of stuff.”

n exhibition showcasing reproductions of the complete series of Utagawa Hiroshige’s The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō is now on display at Yume Japanese Gardens, in Tucson, through May 9. Iconic Japanese artist Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the great masters of the Japanese landscape woodblock print. Between 1833 and 1834, he produced a series of prints illustrating the travelers’ main stopping points along the imperial road called the Tōkaidō (“the Eastern Sea Road”), which connected the Shogun’s administrative capital in Edo (modern Tōkyō) with the emperor’s palace in Kyōto. The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō series is a timeless masterpiece of vibrant scenes representing daimyō’s (noble feudal lord’s) lifestyle, realistic images of ordinary people’s daily life and seasonal landscapes. These prints served as travel souvenirs and guidebook, as well as advertisement to would-be travelers. Yume Japanese Gardens and Museum of Tucson is a nonprofit organization which features eight examples of classical Japanese landscape design, a replica traditional Japanese cottage, a museum of Japanese art and handicrafts, an art gallery and gift shop. Yume sets capacity limits and observes Arizona Department of Health Services guidelines for COVID-19 management. Timed admission tickets, purchased online, are required for entry; physical distancing and facial coverings are also required, in all indoor and outdoor spaces. Location: 2130 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson. For more information, email Yume.Gardens@gmail.com or visit YumeGardens.org.

Arizona Allergies: Testing and Treatment

S

truggling with allergies? Allergy testing focusing specifically on Southern Arizona allergens could be the best step to finding relief. Testing comes in the form of non-injection testing (prick testing) and injection testing in select patients (intradermal testing), which gives very specific diagnoses of allergies, and thus very specific treatment. This is called in vivo testing, as it is the body’s specific reaction, versus in vitro testing, which defines more potential for allergies. Testing typically takes less than an hour in office, with restriction of pretesting medications. After determining one’s particular allergies, there are basically three modalities to allergy treatment: • Avoidance. Avoid the offending allergens—the things to which one is allergic. It is sometimes difficult to avoid specific allergens in an area which one is exposed to daily. • Pharmacotherapy. Multiple medications can be used, such as antihistamines, anti-inflammatories and decongestants. Many of the therapies are palliative and not treating underlying allergy conditions. • Immunotherapy, such as allergy shots or sublingual (under tongue) desensitization. Desensitization actually alters the body’s hyperactive response to allergens, by changing the patient’s immune system. This treatment is performed via weekly allergy injections in office, versus drops regularly under the tongue at home. This is similar to vaccination for infectious diseases such as the flu. A majority of patients undergo changes to improve symptoms and decrease need for allergy medications/avoidance therapy.

to be neuromodulatory, helping the body to maintain homeostasis,” says Relkin, a noted neurologist. “We are in the early stages of research. While there appears to be a multitude of immune, endocrine, antimicrobial and antifungal properties of cannabinoids, more research is needed, but the ECS certainly helps keep our body’s systems in balance.” Understanding how the ECS works in the body is a major component to unleashing the optimal biological potential of the cannabinoids (CBD, CBG and THC are just a few of hundreds in the cannabis plant) and terpenes (the molecules that give each cannabis cultivar its unique taste and smell profile) within the

“A

lthough the medical community has known about the endocannabinoid system (ECS) for decades, it has only recently reached the consciousness of the average physician,” comments Dr. Norman Relkin, Ph.D., MD, the CEO of Brilliant Health. “The concept of the ECS came with study of other endogenous systems, but because of prohibition, research on cannabinoids was handcuffed; thus, a body of literature on the subject is really only now beginning to emerge.” Similar sentiment to Relkin’s is shared by many clinicians practicing allelopathic medicine. Federal prohibition of cannabis as a Schedule I narcotic has effectively prohibited most clinical research for the last 75-plus years. Medical schools have incorporated very little training in cannabis as part of the standard curriculum— and the information is usually limited to cannabis addiction. Only recently has the discovery of the value of cannabis as a therapeutic tool in the arsenal of medicine entered the mainstream, and yet many physicians practicing western medicine continue to refute its clinical efficacy. First observed in Israel in 1992, the discovery of the ECS rightfully should have rocked the world of medicine. But, largely due to prohibition of cannabis, the breakthrough went mostly unnoticed by the scientific community until recently. Research has shown the ECS serves a biological function as a molecular signaling system for other functional systems, such as metabolic regulation. “The most valuable feature of the ECS seems

cannabis plant. Terpenes and cannabinoids work synergistically within the body to produce an ensemble effect to achieve maximum molecular potential, much in the way a symphony works in concert to produce melodies. When choosing cannabis/CBD products, it is important to know how our body will react to the cannabinoids and terpenes therein. Knowing that cannabinoids can work within a complex system of receptors naturally occurring in our body can help to select the most appropriate products for a particular set of needs. Many people find relief through micro-doses of cannabis products. Always start with small doses until familiar with the effect before scaling up the dose. Many users find that when they unlock the power of the ECS, they can eliminate some of the prescription or over-the-counter medications they were previously relying on to maintain health. It always helps to do research. One major component of research involves the certificate of analysis (COA). Always ask to see the COA, which will tell the customer exactly what cannabinoids and terpenes are present in the product. With the combination of a little knowledge and the right products, we can unlock the potential of one very powerful system within our own body. For more information on available products or future orders, contact Nick Sandberg at 520-9005555, option 4 or visit SativaBasics.com. See ad, page 10.

Our Home, Our Mental Well-Being

Using the Senses to Refresh Our Space

O

by Clarese M. Basile

ur home impacts our mental well-being. This is important when stress levels are high, there is uncertainty in the world and some individuals are isolated from their supports in the community. Mental wellness is the ability to adapt to changes in the environment using one’s own coping skills to be flexible, accept the change, take control of things we can and accept the rest. Sounds simple enough, but is it? Flexibility is difficult at times when unexpected things happen, but there are ways to prepare ourselves mentally and emotionally to deal with stress, changes, isolation and even a pandemic. Managing stress requires self-care through exercise, healthy diet and getting enough sleep. Being in our home, apartment or living quarters for the past year has been difficult for many people. How do we maintain our living area so it doesn’t feel like we are in confinement? When everyone is able to go out to work, stores and events without fear, there will be some who avoid going home to the place they associate with the struggles of the past year. Some people will move, others may not be able to because of circumstances. Changing an environment can help us emotionally change feelings initiated by a negative event, trauma or loss. If we can afford to, we can redecorate the home—but it’s not really necessary. The brain makes associations through our senses, memory and elicited emotions. Vision: Color can change emotions. If the walls are white, gray or beige, paint one accent wall a brighter or richer color. Change the color of furniture with different pillows or covers on couches. Spatial changes can alter mood, so move furniture around in the room.

Smell: When walking into a room, try to identify what causes an emotional change. Maybe we need to add a scent that brings up good memories, like grandma’s apple pie. Hearing: Close to a major road or highway, the sounds of alarms, police and fire trucks can trigger fear or anger. Use a timer to start a TV, radio or tablet to sounds that are soothing or relaxing. Touch: Add more textures to an environment by painting the end tables with texture paint, adding decorative tiles or adding a few fidget toys around the house. Reuse old, unwanted clothes to make a hand-tied blanket or pillow with different materials. Collect some wild flowers or succulents from the desert that are safe to touch. Taste: Try new recipes, or eat a new fruit, vegetable or food. These simple activities can give our home environment or office a renewed or better feeling. Individuals are continuing to spend significant amounts of time at home, so we should make it our sanctuary—not solitary confinement. Clarese M. THE SOUND OF MUSIC IN ART

Kinesthetic Artist Howard Kline

H

by Teressa J. Hawkins

oward Kline is a kinesthetic artist. “Music inspires my art,” he says, and it has been a major influence on his paintings. Visual artists work with their sense of touch or sight, but Kline warms up and initiates his day in the studio by first stepping into a soundproof booth, intuitively pounding on a full set of drums for a few minutes. He is usually painting by around 6 a.m., then taking a break before midday when he returns back to his canvas. Kline devotes about six or more hours each day, seven days a week, to creating his art. He channels passionate energy into his paintings, committing to a balance of shape, color and form while drawing his themes from music. His art is vibrant with color and movement. Kline enjoys all music—especially rock and roll and improvisational jazz. The numerous paintings that can be seen in his studio weave a story of a dedicated artist delighting in the values and contrasts of his art. His sensuous watercolor figure work honors the beauty of the feminine form. Coming from humble beginnings, Kline was raised in a working-class Jewish family from Swampscott, Massachusetts. As a teen, he became known as the only Jewish lobsterman from Swampscott. He “converted” his family to eat the lobsters that he brought home from his workday. Kline’s first experience of art came naturally to him. Dabbling with pen and ink, he would render detailed sketches of the lobster fishermen at work. At 9 years old, Kline began playing the drums. He became a talented rock-and-roll drummer in the ‘60s and played in local bands. A musician friend asked him to join a new band that was being formed which included members who eventually formed the famous rock band Boston, but he declined. “It was the road not taken,” says Kline. He considered attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music, but chose the path of painting instead. Kline received a full scholarship to Montserrat College of Art near Boston in 1972. He 20

presented a few pen-and-ink sketches that he brought in a small portfolio and was immediately accepted. “One day I just started painting; it’s all in my head,” he says. Art school taught him how to draw realistically, and he credits life drawings as being the foundation of all schools of art. Life drawings teach one how to learn to grow as an artist and begin a love affair with the process of painting. He has been influenced by many different artists, but especially Hans Hoffman, Larry Rivers, early Marc Chagall and Chaim Soutine. Kline was inspired by the “Der Blaue Reiter” (Blue Rider) movement, a school of German Expressionism that drew parallels between painting and music. He sees his art as an expression of “joie de vivre”—a celebration of life. “No matter what adventures we have in the human condition, we still have to persevere and keep going because life is a precious thing—a gift,” says Kline. Kline is extremely generous with his art and has donated many of his paintings to different nonprofit organizations and animal rights groups, such as the Tucson Humane Society. He has always been a supporter of the LBGT movement and has contributed his art to the cause for the past 30 years. “Equality” is a piece he created and donated to PFLAG in San Luis Obispo, California. He feels for those that have to struggle with relationships. He and his wife Chris have been happily married for 35 years and love Tucson, the arts and the music scene—especially ballroom dancing. Kline has owned galleries for 45 years. His first was in a shoe factory in Lynn,

public audience. “The art world ceased to exist, and an artist needs an audience; it’s a way of completing the circle,” he says. He feels Tucson would benefit from a new contemporary art gallery, encouraging a new generation of local artists to participate and prosper. Kline has enjoyed hosting open studio tours in Tucson, and is committed to having his art be accessible to everyone—“art for the people”. In this spirit, he decided to create his own open studio event celebrating his 50 years of successful artistry. With permission from the city, he invites the public to “come on over and celebrate” and see his work, on April 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 2826 East Calle Glorietta, in Tucson. Happy to speak about his art and what has inspired him in his career, Kline likes to encourage young artists to find their voice and personal style. He can facilitate independent study and assist in creating a college admission or career portfolio. “I’m not trying to change the world, just trying to make the world a better place,” says Kline. He takes great pride and care so his paintings can live on, and have meaning and value. “It’s a way of cheating death.”

Massachusetts, then in Cambria, California and Bisbee, Arizona. After 45 years of having a retail gallery, he now wants to keep a small gallery of his work at home. Though Kline and his wife enjoyed living in Bisbee and were successful in their gallery, they felt that Bisbee was too isolated for them. They found themselves running into Tucson a few times a week to dance, or for appointments, and decided the move to Old Pueblo would be a better fit. In Tucson, Kline’s artist representative Tina Roesler can show his work by appointment at Gallery 2 Sun. Kline also has 15 paintings on display at Bacio Italiano. His work has graced posters for wine festivals, he has collectors of his art and has been commissioned to create paintings for organizations. “Old Glory” is a painting that can be found in the lobby of the VA hospital in Sierra Vista. In San Luis Obispo, the United Methodist Church commissioned a painting titled “Hands of God”. Since COVID forced the closing of art galleries, Kline has been saddened to lose his

introduction to the multifaceted Schock as she reflected on the challenges of 2020 and the hope she harbors for the future of the Fox Tucson Theatre.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON The Fox Tucson Theatre Remains a Crown Jewel

hile the pandemic has brought its share of turmoil to our lives, there are still pockets of joy worth celebrating. The Fox Tucson Theatre is an example of the true beauty and magic that lies within our city. Bonnie Schock was hired as Executive Director of the Fox in January 2020, following a multi-phase, three-month national search process. Shortly thereafter, she faced unexpected challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, Schock has the resourcefulness, grit and determination to rise to the occasion. Her undergraduate degree is from Evergreen State College with an emphasis in Interdisciplinary Arts, and she has an M.F.A. in Stage Directing from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Schock always thought that she’d be an actor on the stage. Like many performers, she assumed that is where she belonged. “I soon realized I was an okay performer, but not great. What I was great at was envisioning a possibility and then going about putting all the pieces together to make it real,” she relates. 22

Initially, Schock utilized these skills as a director, and then it expanded to producing, to arts organizational leadership, to public arts funding policy and to all the ways that the arts can and should be woven into the life of a community. “My love of historic venues—as truly special community performance centers— began when I helped to turn around a small, historic dance performance space in Minneapolis,” she explains. “Before coming to Tucson, I led the remarkable Sheldon Theatre of Performing Arts in Red Wing, Minnesota and fell head over heels in love with landmark theatre buildings that have a palpable community soul. The Fox has that mojo as well.” During her tenure as Executive Director, Schock has worked tirelessly to keep this iconic venue safe, viable and accessible to patrons. “We’ve grieved in the quiet of an empty stage,” she laments. Programming during the pandemic looks different, with digital platforms such as Fox Friday Nights In and Kids in the Theatre (KIT) streaming. We received a virtual front row seat

What is the history of the Fox Tucson Theatre? How has community support influenced the success of the Fox? The Fox opened as a movie palace in 1930. It has been a beloved community gathering space throughout its storied ups and downs. The renovation and rebirth of the space as a live performance venue brought together the entire community—thousands of volunteers, visionaries, donors and people of all walks of life rolling up their real and metaphoric sleeves to make it happen. Since the reopening on New Year’s Eve 2004, the Fox has reemerged as the place to be, where generations of Tucsonans gather in shared experience—whether that’s to see great artists we love, discover new artists we soon will love or supporting the myriad of local community user groups who call the Fox home. Today’s Fox relies on community support to ensure its vibrancy in every way. How profound is the impact of the Fox Tucson Theatre in our community? I’m biased. I think it’s irreplaceable. It’s a space where Tucsonans have built memories, shared experiences, found joy and possibility, and made and deepened connections to place and to one another. I believe the arts have profoundly transformative power. Truly special, one-of-a-kind, storied, historic, rare places like the Fox are a promise that we make to one another to show up in real time and real space. That opportunity for connectedness in an increasingly virtual world is an impact we can never take for granted. Why do you think it has earned the moniker ‘The Crown Jewel of Tucson’? She’s beautiful in a way that is utterly, uniquely Tucson. The decorative style is both spectacular and such an authentic representation of a desert Southwest aesthetic. There are no other known examples of this Southwestern Art-Deco interior. Special frames elevate experiences, so, when you go to a show inside a space, a frame like this, it changes the experience, adds to the emo-

tion and heightens your senses. It’s like a crown jewel—an extra beautiful, treasured heirloom, bound to the history of a place— that makes every occasion feel rare. What challenges have you experienced considering the COVID-19 pandemic? This has been the most challenging time of my career. We’ve all been through the wringer. On my third day on the job, as the brand-new Executive Director, the Fox shut down and I had to furlough 80 percent of our staff. That was devastating for everyone. We thought it would be temporary, and yet that timeframe has been extended again and again. Now, the best-case scenario will be reopening some time in fall of 2021, which would make it 18 months. During this time, we’ve had to reimagine every assumption and every value and every tool in our toolbox, as we work toward that reopening—in the absence of many of our valued colleagues. Our donors have made it possible to stay hopeful. Also, the ways in which individuals are showing up with well wishes and encouragement—that means everything to our team. In what ways can people help to support the Fox? We have a range of merchandise items— T-shirts, caps, mugs, groovy lunchboxes and the loveliest replica of the iconic blade sign as a holiday ornament. Recently, we partnered with 15 other Arizona independent music venues on an “I ♥ AZ” apparel project. It’s all available on our website. You can also buy gift certificates and tickets to currently scheduled shows as you get ready to come back to The Fox. Of course, people can give to our fundraising efforts, as well—in any amount. It all matters. Also, advocacy is so vital. The live performance industry has been decimated, and it’s important for all of us to keep telling the story, reminding policy makers and community leaders and our neighbors, too, that if we value entertainment and the people and spaces that do that work in our communities, we need to raise our voices and do whatever we can to ensure it’s all here on the other side. Another action step people can take to

help the Fox reopen is to mask up and get vaccinated. Right now, our industry simply won’t be able to restart until there is widescale vaccination in the community. So, that means working together to get there. What role do volunteers play in the operation of the Fox? The Fox is supported by hundreds of volunteers. Many of them serve as ushers and a welcoming face to our space. There are also our board members, whose work during the pandemic cannot be praised enough. What is inspiring in your life right now? The idea that the pandemic has offered us the possibility to begin fresh, to rebuild with our values in the lead. We can do it better. That’s exciting, hopeful and the fuel that is keeping me going through the challenges. What’s your favorite band? This is an impossible question! I am a lifelong devotee—in that “this artist changed my life and helped me understand who I am and what I long for” kind of way—of the late David Bowie. More in the moment,

naming me “hellraiser for the good”. I couldn’t ask to be anything more. As a recent transplant to the Old Pueblo, what do you like best about Tucson? The sky is remarkable.

Bonnie Schock I love all things blues. Joe Bonamassa, Shemekia Copeland, Ruthie Foster and Anders Osbourne. I also love the wild pop creativity of artists and bands like Pink, No Doubt and OK Go. The truth is I am a child of the ‘70s. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Always keep editing. The gems are hidden just beyond the noise. What’s the best compliment you ever received? A group of students in the graduate program I used to lead gave me an award,

Is there anything else you’d like to share? I’m deeply grateful for the trust that the Fox board, and ultimately all of Tucson, has placed in me as a steward of a place you love so well. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be a small part of the next chapter in the cultural life of Tucson. The Fox Tucson Theatre is located at 17 W. Congress St., Tucson. Healthy Home How to Detoxify a Living Space by Yvette Hammett

tatiana/Pexels.com

A

s the world moves into its second year of a viral pandemic, many of us are still spending most of our time at home— working, exercising, hanging out with family and as with any other year, cooking and cleaning. There’s no better time to take stock of these surroundings and purge them of any toxins—gases, inhalants or fumes—that may be contributing to a harmful environment.

Start with the air. Research shows that indoor air is two to five times more toxic than the air outside, due to inadequate ventilation. This condition, coupled with fumes from synthetic fibers, makeup, paints, cleansers or even a baby’s plastic toys, can contribute to health issues and a less environmentally beneficial abode. A straightforward solution—in addition to getting rid of the pollution-causing objects—is to open the windows and use fans to recirculate the air. A high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter can safely remove many contaminants, but don’t spritz a commercial air freshener: A University of Washington study found that eight widely used air fresheners released an average of 18 chemicals into the air, some of them hazardous, including the likely human carcinogen acetaldehyde. Purge plastics. Perfluorinated compounds PFAS and PFOS, known as “forever chemicals”, are found in nonstick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, some cosmetics, and products that resist grease, water and oil. They have been found

to cause a wide range of health problems from kidney and testicular cancers to endocrine disruptions. Consider doing a clean sweep of the house to determine which of these can be replaced, paying special attention to plastics. “If you really limit plastics to a few things, you are fine,” says Heather Patisaul, Ph.D., a neuroscience and toxicology expert at North Carolina State University. Reconsider kitchenware. Eliminate all nonstick cookware, Patisaul advises. “Use ceramic and other materials that do not have perfluorinated chemicals.” Debbie Steinbock, a nutrition counselor at Mindful Family Medical, in Boulder, Colorado, suggests replacing plastic storage containers, which can leach chemicals when heated. “Use a cast iron skillet and use glass jars and mason jars for food storage.” Chuck out toxic cleaners. Many commercial kitchen, bathroom and other cleaning products are loaded with chemicals linked to asthma, cancer, reproductive disorders, hormone disruption and neurotoxicity. They can be particularly toxic for children: A recent Canadian study found that repeated use of a disinfectant reduced beneficial gut bacteria in toddlers, probably contributing to obesity. A good place to start in cleaning out the cleaners is at the Environmental Working Group (EWG) website ewg. org; its Healthy Living Home Guide evaluates the health risks of 2,500 cleaning products. It also advises a simple strategy of using vinegar and water or baking soda. Get the lead out. Andrew Rooney, deputy director at the National Toxicology Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, sees lead, which causes brain damage and other serious defects, as a major risk present in water supplies and the paint of older homes. “The thing I want to emphasize is there is no safe level of lead exposure, so eliminating exposure sources is the best protection for your health,” he says. Drinking water contamination comes from the distribution lines and plumbing fixtures, with lead leaching out from repairs or adjustments. “Having your household water tested by a certified lab is the best option to determine if you have water issues,” he says. Consult state and local health agencies for guidance on lead paint or lead in the water lines and how to remove it. Also consider a water filter: ConsumerReports.com has a comprehensive rating of models from pitchers to under-sink setups. Take it a step further. The new EWG downloadable Healthy Living app makes it easy to use a smartphone to check out 120,000 products for toxic ingredients, including cosmetics and foods. “It has a barcode scanner to scan your favorite lipstick or shampoo, and it will pop up an ingredient list and give it a score,” says Patisaul. The database includes ingredients not found on packaging and scores products on a zero to 10 scale. “It pretty much has to be water to get a zero,” she says. s we shake off the sluggishness of winter, many of us feel an urge to “spring clean” our bodies with a detox or cleanse. Yet health experts say such programs should help jumpstart new healthy habits and not necessarily be seen as a short-term fix. “The air we breathe, the water we drink, the cosmetics we use, the materials we build with and most notably, the food that we eat, are loaded with chemicals that are toxic to our metabolism,” says Alejandro Junger, a Los Angeles cardiologist, author and founder of CleanProgram.com. “The systems in the body designed to clear toxicity are overwhelmed, and this leads to the imbalances and damage that is at the root of most diseases today.” Detoxification functions are performed by many different organs and tissues, including intestinal flora, the immune system, the nervous system and the liver, so its imbalances can manifest in diverse ways, according to Junger. “Symptoms of detox imbalance include sleep and mood disorders, anxiety, rashes, lack of energy and libido, autoimmune disorders, inflammation and cancer.” While some health professionals say that detoxes are unnecessary because the body is capable of cleansing itself, others make a compelling case for the need to help it along, given our heightened exposure to manmade toxic elements. Information of varying repute swirls around the internet, offering approaches ranging from juice cleanses to total fasts.

Everyday Toxin Cleaners

Deep Detox

Simple dietary strategies can help sweep out toxins, explains Robin Foroutan, an integrative dietitian and nutritionist in New York City. She points to cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, collards and kale, which promote cytochromes P450, a family of enzymes critical in helping toxins clear the body. She also recommends foods high in fiber that can bind to toxins and bile, and transport them out of the body through the stool. Berries, green tea and turmeric are also helpful for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; even water facilitates the excretion process, supports the lymphatic system and replenishes fluids lost through sweat. Using a water filter and eating organic foods when possible also reduces incoming toxins, she says. Healthy smoothies are a great way to get water, fiber and easily digestible nutrients into our body at the same time, according to Junger. “When using a good, clean, protein powder in addition to fruits and leafy greens, healthy fats such as nuts, and coconut or cashew milk, a smoothie can provide us the nutrients needed to support our energy for hours,” he says. Adding herbs like mint or holy basil (tulsi) and spices like turmeric and cinnamon elevate both flavor and healing. Liquids such as celery juice provide highly concentrated nutrients and hydration, but lack the fiber of a blended drink. Both juices and smoothies give overtaxed digestive systems a needed break.

Fasting (occasionally for a prolonged period, such as three days without food) and intermittent fasting (abstaining from food for a shorter period, such as 16 hours per day on a regular basis) are great tools for deeper detoxification, says Junger. “Digestion takes energy and resources from the detox functions, so eating less, eating less often and allowing time for digestion to stop so that detox can intensify is crucial.” For a comprehensive detox, experts recommend working with a health practitioner to assess toxic burdens and develop a personalized plan. Russell Jaffe, a physician in Ashburn, Virginia, crafts a detox program based on four self-assessments, including digestive transit time, urine pH, hydration levels and vitamin C levels. Jaffe claims our bodies are burdened by excess acid, rendering them less resilient to stress and resulting in fatigue, illness and infection risks. “When we enjoy a diet rich in greens, fruits, vegetables, minerals and antioxidants, our cells become more alkaline and more resistant to everyday stress,” he states. Experts emphasize that a short-term program must be part of a longer-lasting lifestyle and diet shift. “It is not enough to do periodic detoxes if you go back to old habits. OZONE DENTAL THERAPY Ozone dental therapy is a holistic treatment that significantly reduces the presence of oral bacteria. This is a minimally invasive alternative that wards off the advance of developing tooth decay. With ozone dental therapy, the damaging bacteria that break down tooth enamel, leading to decay, are eradicated by altering the oral environment.

HOW DOES OZONE DENTAL THERAPY WORK? Ozone dental therapy works to disinfect and prevent common dental issues with the administration of ozonated water and/or ozone gas. The negative charge of the ozone is naturally attracted to areas of inflammation and infection. When a cavity is exposed to ozone, which not only kills the bacteria surrounding the tooth, but alters the environment so the bacteria is unable to flourish. The bacteria that live in your mouth thrive on acidity. Ozone neutralizes oral acidity, altering pH levels, so damaging oral bacteria is eradicated, leading to a healthier mouth and teeth. Ozone also accelerates re-mineralization, strengthening the teeth. At E Dental Solutions, we believe this advanced treatment is of great benefit to those who are experiencing the early signs of tooth decay or gum disease. Ozone dental therapy is minimally invasive.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OZONE DENTAL THERAPY? • Gum Disease – ozone wards off bacteria from the gum line and surrounding tissues • Decay – ozone will kill bacteria on contact, and it can get into hard-to-reach areas below the gum line and into the grooves of teeth • Sensitivity– flooding a sensitive dental area with ozone can harden the structure, resulting in significantly less sensitivity • Promote Healing– after a dental extraction or a procedure where there is trauma to an oral tissue, ozone can be applied to the area to kill pathogens as well as initiate a healing response. We have always been committed to providing our patients with new and improved ways to manage oral and dental health. Our methods include a more natural and conservative path toward oral hygiene. Ozone dental therapy is just one of the holistic treatments we offer our patients at E Dental Solutions. Whether you are in need of preventative services or restorative services, our highly trained staff of dental experts will work hard to not only improve your oral hygiene but to protect your overall health.
