Instead of spending your money on flowers and chocolate, give a helping hand up to your fellow beings by giving some to a beggar on the street or donating it to a shelter for humans or animals.

Remember that holiday feeling of love and gratitude you had not two months ago? Extend that same energy to everyone on Valentine's Day. Let’s decide Valentine’s Day is about us all, instead of we two. Maybe our lovingkindness will deepen our own inner wellspring of love for self and others.

Watsu and Wellness, New Resource to the Tucson Community

P

hysical Therapist Jean Read, owner of Watsu and Wellness, has relocated to Tucson. She brought with her a wide variety of treatment skills that she has gained over her 29 years as a physical therapist. Her skills and modalities include: craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation, lymphatic drainage, dry needling, total motion release, pain neutralizing technique, hot stone myofascial release and more. Read is offering 20 percent off an initial visit to her during the month of February. “I believe that the body has an innate ability to heal, repair and restore itself when given the opportunity to do so. However, with the environmental, societal, familial and personal stresses that we place on ourselves, chronic tension and stress takes its toll on the health of the body,” explains Read. “Complicate that with an injury, car accident or emotional trauma and health tends to take a nose dive. Brain fog, fatigue, pain, digestive issues, headaches, anxiety, poor sleep habits and more begin to set in and medication doesn’t seem to fix the problems. The fight and flight systems get turned on high and we can’t seem to shut it off and find that inner calm and peace we used to experience.” Through her variety of skills and techniques, Read has helped many to reach that inner state of well-being, reset the system to a place of calm and significantly reduce pain and structural dysfunction in the body. Clients have reported improvements in hearing, vision, alignment of teeth and TMJ, pain relief, sleep, swallow, digestion, PTSD and more. Read is currently studying functional nutrition and will be adding that to her other skills to fortify, nourish and replenish the body. free film, The Phenomenon of Healing: The Worldwide Activities of The Bruno Groening Circle of Friends, will be shown at Unity of Tucson, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., February 2, and continuing at 2 p.m., February 3. Due to extraordinary healings, Bruno Groening made headlines around the world in the 1950s. When he died in 1959, many believed that this phenomenon ended. However, people on all continents are still attaining help and healing, thanks to this man’s teachings. The event will include breaks, and voluntary donations are appreciated. In 1979, Grete Hausler founded the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends. Even though initially there was only a handful of Friends, the Circle has grown into one of the largest organizations worldwide for help and healing on the spiritual path. More than 13,000 voluntary helpers tirelessly assist. Doctors and other healthcare professionals of the Medical Scientific Group of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends give lectures worldwide, and also upon request by many universities. In 2013 in New York, the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends was awarded a Peace Pole by the World Peace Prayer Society, which is affiliated with the United Nations. The Phenomenon of Healing documents events that happened after Groening’s death in 1959. Viewers learn how the work of Bruno Groening developed after his death, and how healings continue today, irrespective of religious affiliation, skin color and culture. Fascinating interviews, professional comments by doctors and personal reports from Friends from many countries give a broad overview of this big Circle of Friends. Dance—It’s Good for the Heart by Chris Lechner

N

ot only is dance good for the physical body, but it is also beneficial to emotional health as well. Studies show that when couples dance together and in close contact, there is a release of oxytocin which creates a feeling of well-being and joy. There is also a benefit to heart health—not just benefits to the physical heart from the exercise that dancing provides, but also the emotional heart. When a couple is dancing, they have the physical connection of touch, plus a nonverbal connection called “lead and follow”, which the partnership communicates through body language and movement. Many people in the dance community have said that they started dancing after their children had grown and moved from home. Some parents outside of work are occupied by taking their kids to some sort of school activity, sporting event or outing. After children make their own way, some parents feel like they don’t have much in common anymore and dancing is a way they could reconnect. Some couples meet while dancing after their significant other has passed and it can help them to become social again. After a stressful day, there is no better place to be than the dance floor. We can put our electronic device on the table and be in the moment, whether dancing a romantic rumba, spicy tango or magical waltz. Some of the side effects of dance include a boost in self-confidence, self-discipline, less stress, more mental acuity and the strengthening of the physical body. Chris Lechner and Music In Motion Dance Studio will host a Valentines Dance Social on February 9. Admission is $10 and $8 for active/retired military, first responder and USA Dance members. A newcomer group class will begin at 7 p.m. and an intermediate group class at 7:30 p.m., followed by social dancing from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Music in Motion is located at 1980 W. River Rd., Ste. 140, Tucson. Connect at 520-447-7841 or MMDanceAZ.com. See ad, page 10.

ichael Wertz says he has always found the act of melding the art of illustration and commerce exciting. “I love to direct that passion into crafting an emotive experience that words cannot,” explains the Oakland, California, illustrator. “For me, it means I’ve created an image that distills a moment of clarity.” Wertz’s bold, energetic visions leap from his imagination through the pencil he always uses to begin an illustration and finish as digital collage, monoprints or screen prints. He has been creating images for publishers, designers, advertising agencies and musicians since 1995, when he graduated from the California College of the Arts, in Oakland. The artist’s colorful imagery, commissioned by dozens of national clients, has been featured in Communication Arts and American Illustration and recognized by the Society of Illustrators. Tips for a Tree-Free Home Many Ways to Pare Down Paper Use

If one in five households switched to electronic bills, statements and payments, the collective impact would save 151 million pounds of paper annually, eliminating 8.6 million full garbage bags and 2 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the PayItGreen Alliance. While computers continue to offer significant environmental benefits, there are other “tree-mendous” things we can do to conserve forest resources. n Paper bags can be substituted for plastic bags as trash can liners and serve as compost-ready receptacles for fruit and vegetable scraps. ChasingGreen.org describes many ways to reuse paper bags after cutting them along the seams; use them to wrap gifts and shipping boxes or let the kids paint or draw on them. n Use the blank side of sales receipts, envelopes, shopping lists and other paper scraps to jot down to-do lists, notes and more. The family can keep a small pile that everyone can tap into. n Replace paper napkins and towels with cloth napkins or portions of old T-shirts that can be washed and reused.

violetkaipa/Shutterstock.com

n Choose paper products that are gentle on the Earth in how they are made. TreeZero Inc. (TreeZero.com) markets, supplies and distributes 100 percent carbon- neutral paper made from recycled sugarcane waste fiber. n Consider “branching out” and help protect trees that are being threatened by overharvesting, development and the effects of climate change by supporting the Alliance for Community Trees (ACTrees.org), a national nonprofit that plants trees in communities across the nation. Get the shovels ready to pitch in when the Arbor Day Foundation (ArborDay.org) celebrates its 148th annual tree-planting events on April 26—especially important this year due to the destruction of many trees from recent hurricanes and fires.

WHOLISTIC FAMILY MEDICINE MOVES

New, Environmentally Safe, Mold-Free Clinic

C

ommon complaints of countless people include having things like constant fatigue, belly aches, constipation, diarrhea, brain fog or the inability to concentrate. If visits to doctor after doctor never result in any concrete diagnosis or treatment for these disabling problems, there’s a chance the real culprit could actually be mold exposure. Dr. Lance Morris, in clinical practice in Tucson since 1985, has seen numerous patients with these problems and perfect laboratory tests, such as complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, thyroid panel, lipid panel, X-ray or CT scan. But Morris doesn’t tell these patients to “just schedule their next annual physical and have a nice day,” as, he says, a typical doctor might. According to him, the reason these patients are deemed perfectly healthy is that these are the wrong tests to evaluate their problem. All these symptoms and more may be from mold toxin, Lyme disease or excess histamine. According to Morris, the single most common presenting complaint in medical visits is fatigue. “Do you have any difficulty remembering things or are you so tired that sometimes you feel like you can barely do anything? If you’re not anemic and your blood thyroid levels are normal, you may be diagnosed as being depressed or needing a psychiatric referral. However, mold exposure is one of the primary factors influencing energy, memory and cognitive function,” he says. Because of his belief that mold and environmental factors inside buildings can be a major cause of illness, Morris has just moved his office, Wholistic Family Medicine, to 2310 North Wyatt Drive, across

16

from TMC. This new office has been designed to be environmentally friendly, fragrance-free and mold-free. How frequent or common are mold-related illnesses? “The truth is all of us have been or are being exposed to mold or mycotoxins daily, in our homes, work places and schools. Studies have demonstrated that mold is either causing or contributing to a lot of illnesses. Some mold experts have even speculated that mold may be a major factor in almost all disease,” cautions Morris. There are many mold-related symptoms, because the illness affects multiple systems in the body. Those experiencing several of these symptoms could be suffering from mold illness. According to Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of mold-related illness, some of these symptoms include: fatigue, weakness, aches, muscle cramps, unusual pain, headache, light sensitivity, red eyes, blurred vision, sinus problems, cough, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, diarrhea, joint pain, morning stiffness, memory issues, focus/ concentration issues, word recollection issues, confusion, disorientation, skin sensitivity, mood swings, appetite swings, sweats (especially night sweats), temperature regulation problems, excessive thirst, increased urination, static shocks, numbness, tingling, vertigo, metallic taste or tremors. At the new Wholistic Family Medicine office, patients are requested to come to the office with no strong smelling synthetic perfume, cologne, hair sprays, shampoo, lotions or deodorants. These chemicals do not wash off, Morris says. They have been

linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions, and an overwhelming 72 percent of asthmatic patients have adverse reactions to scented products. Morris has used Shoemaker’s recommended testing procedures to confirm a safe and mold-free clinic. Additionally, he has used certified organic paint. This paint is significantly better than no or low VOC (volatile organic chemical) paints, which mislead the consumer as being safe and harmless though they are not. Interestingly, Morris has also used effective microorganisms (EM1) in the office, adding the material to all paint, tile mortar and grout. Other than baking soda and vinegar, it is the only product Morris allows or approves for cleaning any surface in the new clinic. Developed by Dr. Teruo Higa in 1982, EM1 is a combination of beneficial microorganisms that exist in nature: lactic acid bacteria, yeast and phototropic bacteria. EM1 activates local and native microorganisms that live in soil and water to maximize their natural power. Think of EM1 the same way we think of probiotics. Probiotics are naturally occurring microorganisms that live in the intestinal tract of humans. These beneficial organisms are an important part of the human microbiome and exert a crucial role in absorption, metabolism and detoxification. They also help modulate or balance immune function. Health is not possible without their influence. Probiotics are to the human body as EM1 is to the Earth.

Most of the health problems associated with mold are not merely from the living spores, but the mycotoxins that the spores produce. Wiping a moldy surface with bleach will kill the surface spores, but external application of bleach is not effective against any permeable material exposed to mold. The health damage caused by mold spores is only the tip of the iceberg compared to the health damage caused by mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are dead byproducts of mold; they are resistant to chemicals, heat, UV light, ozone and are virtually impossible to destroy. So where does that leave us? The good news is that EM1, as an organic living complex of beneficial microbes, is capable of decomposing the mycotoxins. This makes the mycotoxin harmless. In fact, EM1 has been documented to decompose radioactive isotopes, at a vastly accelerated rate. Given our ambient exposure to radioactive waste, EM1 holds a significant role for both our personal and planetary health. Promising Progress Against Disease

A cold-loving fungus known as white-nose syndrome (Pseudogymnoascus destructans) originating in Eurasia, where bats evolved to develop immunity to it, began infecting 15 species of hibernating bats in North America in 2006. As the fungus grows over bats’ noses and wings, it disrupts their winter sleep, causing them to expend too much energy and burn up fat they need for winter survival. More than 6 million bats have succumbed to the disease so far. Some species are experiencing near total collapse: Little brown bat populations have been decimated by about 90 percent, while tricolored and northern long-eared bats are suffering losses of around 97 percent. Ecologists thought the fungus might halt at the Rockies, but by 2016 it had made its way to Washington State. A collaboration between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, biologists, ecologists, mycologists, biochemists and other scientists at universities, NGOs and state, federal and tribal agencies have made significant progress in combating the fungus using genomics: Sequencing its genes has allowed them to determine its origin. Plans include treating the caves and mines in which the bats hibernate. It also appears that some species are developing resistance to the fungus or developing coping strategies, like waking up together every night to generate extra group warmth.

Bug Apocalypse

Sharp Decline Threatens Ecosystem

Insects around the world are in a crisis, and a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that the problem is even more widespread than scientists first believed. In a pristine rain forest in Puerto Rico, the number of invertebrates—including moths, butterflies, spiders and grasshoppers—dropped 60-fold between 1977 and 2013, probably due to a fourdegree rise in average temperature. The lizards, birds and frogs that fed on them also seriously declined. In 2014, an international team of biologists estimated that globally in the past 35 years, the numbers of invertebrates such as beetles and bees had decreased by 45 percent. Another recent study showed a 76 percent decrease in flying insects in the past few decades in German nature preserves. The food web may be being obliterated from the bottom: Insects pollinate three-quarters of our food crops, feed the birds and fish that are also consumed by larger species and are vital to the decomposition that keeps soil healthy and ecosystems running. “Nature’s resilient, but we’re pushing her to such extremes that eventually it will cause a collapse of the system,” Brad Lister, a co-author of the Puerto Rican study, told the New York Times.

Mind Meld

Translating Thoughts Into Speech

Scientists are trying to translate speech-paralyzed patients’ thoughts into speech using brain implants. The technique will potentially provide a brain/computer interface (BCI) to enable people with a spinal cord injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, stroke or other paralyzing conditions to “talk” again. Experts think a system that decodes whether a person is silently saying yes, no, hungry, pain or water is now within reach, thanks to parallel advances in neuroscience, engineering and machine learning. “We think we’re getting enough of an understanding of the brain signals that encode silent speech that we could soon make something practical,” says Brian Pasley, of the University of California, Berkeley. The first BCI read electrical signals in the motor cortex corresponding to the intention to move, and used software to translate the signals into instructions to operate a computer cursor or robotic arm. In 2016, scientists at the University of Pittsburgh went a step further, adding sensors to a mind-controlled robotic arm so it produced sensations of touch.

Know Risks and Address Them Early

Heart of a Woman The Right Choices Keep It Strong by Lisa Marshall

S

ometime between the salad and the main course at her grandson’s bar mitzvah, Joyce Lenard, then 69, felt a crushing pressure deep within her chest. A tireless go-getter who had worked in Hillary Clinton’s district office when she was a U.S. senator, raised two daughters and recently donated a kidney to one of them, Lenard had spent months painstakingly planning the 100-guest gala, so when the pain came, she ignored it and got on with the party. She even drove herself to her Long Island home that night. “I just assumed I was having indigestion and it would pass,” Lenard recalls. Hours later, her husband rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a rare, often-fatal form of heart attack, takotsubo cardiomyopathy, in which intense stress literally changes the shape of the heart. Thankful to be alive, she has since taken up meditation, cleaned up her diet and now leads a support group for 20

female heart patients of all ages. Like her, many of them never saw it coming. “Women tend to be the caregivers,” says Lenard. “We take care of our husbands, our families, our friends, our careers, and we often forget about our own health. Then look what happens.” Lenard is among the 44 million U.S. women with cardiovascular disease, an insidious illness that until recently has been erroneously framed as a “man’s disease”. In reality, it is the number one killer of women, responsible for one in three deaths each year, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). By comparison, one in 26 women die of breast cancer. While awareness has risen since 2004, when AHA launched its Go Red for Women campaign, surveys show only 17 percent of women view cardiovascular disease as something that should concern them. It should, experts say, because 80 to 90 percent of cases are avoidable with lifestyle

NaturalTucson.com

In the late 1990s, researchers discovered women were about as likely as men to be diagnosed with the disease, and far more likely to die from it. “They didn’t have the classic signs and symptoms, so they often went undiagnosed and untreated,” explains Jennifer Mieres, M.D., a cardiology professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, in New York. Along with chest pain, women often suffer fatigue, shortness of breath, indigestion, pain in the neck, back or jaw, nausea or anxiety in the months leading up to a heart attack. In more than half of the cases, according to one recent study in the journal Circulation, doctors fail to recognize these symptoms. Then there is the “not now” factor. “I used to see women all the time who said, ‘I have had these symptoms for months, but I just didn’t have time to take care of it,’” says Mieres, co-author of Heart Smart for Women: Six S.T.E.P.S. in Six Weeks to Heart-Healthy Living. Recent research has also shown that women are uniquely vulnerable to developing heart disease in ways that men don’t share. Taking birth control pills (especially while smoking) can boost risk. Complications during pregnancy such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes can be hard on the heart, increasing vulnerability for years to come. Because estrogen is believed to be cardio-protective, when it wanes during perimenopause and menopause, risk goes up again. “As soon as we hit menopause, our biological milieu starts to change,” says Mieres, noting that “good” cholesterol tends to decrease and “bad” cholesterol

and dietary changes. In some cases, natural remedies can even reverse it. “We have all this sophisticated equipment and all these medications, but when it comes down to it, the vast majority of cardiovascular disease can be prevented,” says integrative cardiologist Christina Adams, M.D., of the Scripps Women’s Heart Center, in La Jolla, California.

(LDL) and triglycerides tend to increase. Yet, arterial plaque—which can ultimately build up, break loose and cause a heart attack or stroke—starts accumulating as early as age 20, so the earlier women start paying attention, the better.

Food Not Meds

Thirty years after the first cholesterol-lowering medication hit the market, so-called statin drugs have become the largest class of medications in the world, with U.S. sales doubling between 2000 and 2010 to reach $20 billion, according to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. While drugs can be appropriate for those already diagnosed with heart disease and at high risk of heart attack or stroke, they are not without serious side effects. Statins can cause chronic muscle pain, memory loss and increased blood sugar, while hypertension drugs can precipitate fainting and kidney damage. For many patients, there’s another way, integrative cardiologists say. Unfortunately, most of the talk about prevention focuses on prescription medications, says

Stephen Devries, M.D., executive director of the Chicago-based Gaples Institute for Integrative Cardiology. “What often gets lost in the discussion are the dietary changes, which can be equally important.” Devries recommends a plant-based Mediterranean diet—low in the saturated fat found in beef, processed meats and cheese—and high in leafy greens, whole grains and the “good” fats found in fatty fish, olive oil and avocados. Specific foods have also been shown to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Nuts, including walnuts, peanuts and almonds, have been shown to lower LDL. One 2017 study of 77,000 female nurses, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found those that ate peanuts or tree nuts (including almonds and cashews) two or more times per week had a 19 percent lower risk of developing heart disease. Those that ate walnuts once a week cut their risk by 23 percent. Dark purple and red fruits contain compounds called anthocyanins that boost production of nitric oxide, and in turn

expand blood vessels, improving circulation. Another recent study, published in the journal Circulation, followed 94,000 women for 18 years and found those that ate four servings or more per week of blueberries and strawberries were a third less likely to have a heart attack. Pomegranates are also key for heart health, with recent research published in the journal Clinical Nutrition showing a daily serving of juice can make platelets less sticky, lower blood pressure and reduce plaque formation. Dark leafy greens like kale and broccoli—which are rich in vitamin K—play an important role in fostering a healthy heart structure, with each serving per week cutting the risk of heart disease by 23 percent, according to the Gaples Institute.

Nurturing the Emotional Heart

No discussion of heart health would be complete without an emphasis on social and emotional health, a critical risk factor which until recently has been largely absent, says Sandeep Jauhar, M.D., director

To nurture the metaphorical heart, integrative cardiologists recommend taking time to maintain healthy personal relationships and minimize work stress. As well, exercising five to six days per week for at least 30 minutes and practicing activities like mindfulness meditation or yoga have been shown to lower heart rate. A recent study published in the journal Circulation: Car-

diovascular Quality and Outcomes looked at 201 people with coronary heart disease. It found those that practiced meditation were 50 percent less likely to die or have a heart attack or stroke in the span of five years. Finding quiet spaces to retreat to can also be important. A study published in November by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston, found that living and working in chronically noisy environments can boost the risk for heart problems. It is also wise to prioritize sleep (at least seven hours per night), because the lack of it can inflame arteries. The bottom line is that a holistic approach is best, says Jauhar. “If you want to live a long life, don’t smoke, eat well and exercise, but also pay attention to the quality of your relationships and your ability to withstand stress and transcend distress. Those are also a matter of life and death.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. Connect at LisaAnnMarshall.com.

of the Heart Failure Program at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and author of the new book, Heart: A History. But research shows the emotional heart can break, too, as in Lenard’s case. With as many as 90 percent of incidents occurring in women, the condition that landed her in the emergency room often shows up in patients with no signs of obstructed blood vessels or high cholesterol. Rather, factors like financial worries, work stress or the death of or break-up with a loved one can flood the heart with stress hormones, changing its shape to one that resembles a Japanese pot called a takotsubo and weakening it profoundly. “Remarkably, in many cases, once the emotional state returns to normal, so does the heart,” says Jauhar. Longer-term, emotional stress has been shown to lead to platelet aggregation, or stickiness in the blood, which can impact blood flow. Also, constant bombardment by stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol can damage the inner walls of blood vessels, boosting accumulation of plaque.

The Sensitivities of the Heart by Linda Joy Stone

D

o you consider yourself a highly sensitive person, or empath, who is easily reactive to the noise and stimuli of the world around you? Do you sometimes wish you could wear a lead-lined space suit to protect your sympathetic nervous system and that tender, vulnerable heart? As a sensitive person, common emotional responses are anxiety (upward and outward movement of qi energy) and depression (inward and downward movement of qi). Anxiety can be a hyper arousal or flooding of emotions when faced with a conflict, perceived threat or the world in turmoil. Depression can be a shutting down and turning inward, which may be the soul’s way of tuning out the noise. Anxiety and fear can simply be fightor-flight energy that arises from within our primal brains, having been programmed eons ago for our survival and safety. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the heart is considered the “sovereign ruler” that houses the mind and spirit and is also the reservoir for all our emotions. The emotions are essentially infused into the blood as the blood moves through the heart; as a result, our emotions, like our blood, can be said to nourish every cell of our body. Therefore, the quality of our thoughts and emotions can have a powerful effect upon the vital qi circulating within the body. Think of how and where the emotions of joy, sorrow, fear or anxiety affect you in your body. Do you feel them more in your chest, gut or head? Pathology or disease can arise when there is a persistent

disturbance or disharmony of qi. The common treatment in TCM is to “calm the spirit” through herbs, acupuncture and awareness—trusting what the body needs—and taking time out to nourish the spirit. Imagine our “heartmind” as having a very sensitive vibratory field that contracts or expands when exposed to dissonant or resonant frequencies. Everything and everyone has an energetic field. Our goal is to be able to discern negative and positive messages in order to maintain balance and coherence of the heartmind. Sometimes we just need to walk away from a dissonant situation or person. What if our sensitivity to the environment is actually a gift to be used as a barometer? This would confirm the Asian premise that we and everything in the universe are intricately connected and we are merely feeling our cosmic connections. As our planet and the cosmos continue their evolutionary process of expansion and contraction, birth and death, so do we experience these cyclical changes—often intuitively. As multidimensional beings,

we are essentially connected to each other through the heart and resonate most deeply with other sensitive souls, including our animal friends. Rather than become overly protective or defensive about your vulnerabilities, consider strengthening your intuitive impulses by consciously cultivating your heart qi. Seek coherence through spirited activities and laughter, through breathwork, dreamwork and solitude, through movement and dance, through creative writing, music and art, and being in harmony with nature. Consider spiritual activism or metaphysical studies to put your empathic tendencies to work. Heart consciousness wants to expand when in harmonious environments, to burst forth with unconditional love within a sharing, supportive community. Empathy is emotional intelligence channeled through the heart from the unity or Akashic Field of consciousness. So, trust in your bodily messages, in the cycles of change and in the cosmic influences. Most importantly, trust in that tender, sensitive, empathic heart. The heart knows. Linda Joy Stone, OMD, L.Ac. will be moving May 1 to Ajijic, Lake Chapala, Mexico, with her husband and their three cats. THE YEAR OF THE PIG

A Time of Fortune and Luck, with Caveats by The Tao Time Guide

B

eginning February 5, we enter the Chinese Zodiac Yin Earth Pig domain. We can expect mixed energies requiring attention to avoid loss and to create new abundance. Being intuitively in tune with the time, playfulness and festivities follows cleaning and clearing our matrix. Do not gamble. This time begins with a shakeout, of separating the wheat from the chaff. We may lose friends, work relations and other connections. We are advised to cut our losses, both emotionally and materially. The shakeout is best accomplished early, adjusting to a thinner, clearer time that will be better for us in the long run. Yin Earth Pig ends the 12-year zodiac elemental cycle. A lot has been collected in the past 11 years. This time is to lighten

the load, to be ready to enter the next zodiac elemental cycle. It begins with the shakeout, followed by strategic intuitive planning and banking resources. Break old promises that no longer serve us, make new promises that reflect the time we are in now. Pig influence is refining, cleaning up, correcting and setting matters straight. The most fortuitous actions are well planned, curbing the happenstance of gambling on hopes and fears. The caveat is not to be numbed by the feeling of abundance and lightness reigning throughout the year and not to be inattentive managing our pro forma. Breaking our budget, acquiring or investing poorly and allowing assets to deteriorate will result in losses. Play within boundaries, content in happy and satisfying times. The dominant presence of the Earth element under the Yin polarity has the effect of stabilizing and fixing the joyous and ephemeral yearlong energies specific to the year of the Pig. With help, Pig can turn misfortune to an advantage. The first action of the shakeout is to rise up to become more naturalistic. Take on a Zen beingness of what is, is, and what ain’t, ain’t. Stop putting meaning on experiences and things. Second, delightful playfulness will become more of our being. Make preparing a strategic plan fun. By way of a rational approach, examine what to leave in and what to leave out of our sphere of influence. Assess every promise, every commitment,

Considerations in Finding the Right Practitioner

M

by Danielle Dvorak

ost alternative or wholistic practitioners are not regulated or licensed like other professions such as medical doctors, psychologists, social workers or nurses. However, they should, at minimum, be trained and certified in whatever modality or treatment they offer. Because of the nature of wholistic practices, there usually are no governing

26

bodies, no regulatory agencies and no government or insurance qualifications, and this can be a double-edged sword. Many practitioners develop their expertise in various ways, including workshops, training and mentoring, apprenticing with a teacher, studying with a master, life experience and the like. While many practitioners are very knowledgeable and proficient in their field,

NaturalTucson.com

they may never have had a class in communication or bedside manner. In addition, there are no classes or oaths regarding ethics for wholistic practitioners and regrettably (like in all professions), there is a wide variety of situations that arise because of this. So how do we find the right practitioner for us? Recommendations from trusted friends and family? Gut instinct? Our mind can get in the way, so don’t let the mind lead to second guessing. However, taking into account what the mind tells us can be important, too. It’s paradoxical. Remember that a practitioner that resonates with a good friend or family member won’t necessarily be the right practitioner for everyone. As much as we love our “peeps”, we are all singular individuals and our life experiences are uniquely our own. Here are some guidelines and questions to ask when objectively reviewing a practitioner to work with: n What is their history, how much experience do they have and what about references? n Are they trained, certified and bring a full body of knowledge to what they offer? n Do they walk the talk—live what they “preach”? Meaning, do they eat well,

exercise, have a spiritual practice, get enough sleep and take good care of their body? n Are they mindful of thought, speech and action? n Have they engaged in their “work”? They have dived into their shadow and worked on self-realization, which means healing personal issues, having good relationships with family and friends, being mindful of their own triggers and issues and being able to communicate from a centered mature self. By the way, this takes time—many years, usually decades for most of us—and is an ongoing process. n Beware of those who, when situations get difficult, respond with euphemisms to immediately shift away from the uncomfortable and just focus on goodness and light. This is called “spiritual bypass” and is becoming more and more common in our culture. n Are they aware of their impact on creating relationships both in the present and through time into future and past? n Do they engage with us in a way that is empowering for us? Do they recognize the wholeness inherent in every person, group and circumstance that comes for treatment?

n Do they honor whatever reality the client resides within? n Do they work with compassion and non- judgment? n Is maintaining clients’ privacy guaranteed? Be aware if they talk about other friends or clients with you, as chances are they may then speak about you with others.

Remember that a practitioner that resonates with a good friend or family member won’t necessarily be the right practitioner for everyone. These guidelines are offered as a place to start. We should all take what works for us, disregard what doesn’t and above all—be kind to ourselves and others in this journey we call human life. Danielle L. MASTERS OF Bodywork & Healing Arts Assemblage Point Alignment A Critical Element of Health by Suzanne Pear

H

Tears come from the heart and not from the brain. ~Leonardo da Vinci

ealth practitioners in many parts of the world, especially those practicing energy medicine, have long known about the role that the human energy body’s chakras, or energy wheels, play in supporting the body’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. It is widely believed that when one or more of the seven major chakras is out of balance, with the energy flowing too fast, too slow or blocked, then it makes one susceptible to disease or illness. Although ancient sages, and more recently the shaman Don Juan of Carlos Casteneda fame, have known about the Assemblage Point (AP), it is only within the last 20 years, due to the research of Dr. Jon Whale of Great Britain, that more extensive knowledge has come to light about its importance in helping our chakras stay in balance, the diseases promoted by misalignment, how to test for AP alignment and most importantly, how to realign the AP back to its proper position in the central chest. The AP is considered to be the vortex or epicenter of all human vibration, where the chakras intersect. Its intended and optimal position is located two to three fingers’ breadth below the angle of the sternum at the center of the chest, and may feel tender when deeply pressed. Proper AP position allows the chakras to stay balanced for optimal physical and mental health. According to Whale and his extensive clinical research, the symptoms associated with AP misalignment are numerous and varied, although many manifest as psychiatric conditions with physical components. Examples include anger, anxiety, mania and neuroses—including some exhibiting excessive physical energy, while other neuroses, as well as dementia and depression, may be associated with marked fatigue and lack of physical energy, depending on the extent of drift and angle of the AP from the center. No one is claiming that AP realignment will cure everything that ails us, but the least it does is to reset our “body electric” back to its “default settings”. After AP realignment, many clients say they felt “a shift”, more focused, peace, calm, a sense of bliss and that they “got their sh*t together”. ing injected directly into the bloodstream. Swallowing or injecting medication delivers compounded chemicals directly into the body, which targets specific symptoms caused by disease. It’s perhaps a little more difficult to fathom the idea that effective medicine can be absorbed through the skin, the largest organ of the human body. Natural plant topicals are growing as an alternative means to administering medication. Everyone has at least one experience of putting something on the skin. Moisturizer, sunscreen, cosmetics and shaving cream are just several products that are used on a regular basis. We rarely think about the absorption that occurs when a substance is applied to the skin. When it comes to treating disease or illness, rubbing something on the skin is probably one of the last solutions people think of doing. Because the skin is so porous and absorbent, most of what is applied is quickly taken into the cells and enters the bloodstream. There are numerous topicals available for medical treatment on the market today, but unfortunately many have man-made chemical compounds that can sometimes result in a dangerous product—especially the narcotic transdermal patches. In a time when millions of people are seeking safe and natural alternative medicine, organic, age-old topical treatments seem to be a perfect match. Ask any grandmother about homemade poultices and remedies that were used on them when they were young. One memory might be that of having a warm towel filled with fried onions and placed on their chests to help relieve congestion. A poultice is a paste-like substance typically made with plants, herbs and other organic material. The paste,

normally warm, is wrapped in a cloth and placed on different areas of the body. Poultices have been used for thousands of years, and have been shown to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, draw out poison and other toxins and can enhance circulation to damaged areas of the body. Most kitchens have an inventory of items in the pantry that can be made into a poultice. A little water, vinegar, milk, olive oil and flaxseed, when prepared properly, can be made into a treatment that helps keep swelling and inflammation at bay. For injuries where severe pain is accompanied with the swelling, several heads of the poppy plant can be added to the poultice. Some poultices may not have the best smell, but when beneficial results are the desired outcome for treatment, it’s worth it. There is a topical treatment which has an array of wonderful scents: essential oils. Inhalation is considered a topical because the inhalants are absorbed into the mucus membranes within the nose or mouth. The popularity of essential oils over the last few years has been staggering. Using the essence of plants and flowers, oils are transformed into a medicinal treatment for many different diseases, illnesses and conditions. Smelling lavender, chamomile and basil can help calm the body and mind. The scent of rosemary can help with memory and clarity of thought. If an energy boost is needed because of a long, hard day, the crisp aroma of lemongrass will help. There are close to 100 different essential oils. Each has its own medicinal values and unique scents, usually pleasant. Essential oils can be applied to pressure points on the body, or they can be inhaled by diffusing them. The rising star in the holistic, alternative medicine movement cannot be forgotten either. CBD oil is the essence of the marijuana plant. When made into a salve, tincture or lotion, CBD can help with a number of different ailments. The 32

non-psychoactive CBD agent enters the bloodstream, but is absorbed locally at the place of application first, and then interacts with the cannabinoid receptors located throughout the body. By stimulating the cannabinoid receptors, the body starts its balancing act of the endocannabinoid system. This is where the physiologies affecting the immune system are triggered, giving the body an added edge when fighting disease. There are studies that show CBD oil can help stop seizure activity in the body, fight certain types of cancer, eliminate anxiety and minimize depression. One of the most beneficial effects of CBD oil is the ability to lessen pain—even chronic pain. Research for alternative medical treatments continues in laboratories throughout the world. This is indicative of the direction that the population is moving toward: a time and place where natural, holistic treatments are mainstream.

GOOD TO KNOW Throughout history, HONEY has been seen as incredibly useful in many different ways— and not just by bringing a little sweetness to our lives. Honey draws moisture from the environment, so when spread over wounds, from minor to major, it can dehydrate bacteria, which in turn speeds up healing. According to the Asian Pacific Journal of Biomedicine article, “Honey: its Medicinal Property and Antibacterial Activity”, honey is also packed full of antimicrobials, which prevent the spreading of infection.

GOOD TO KNOW CUCUMBERS are not only for making pickles and adding to salads and sandwiches. There are a number of benefits that cucumbers can provide when using them topically. The tubular vegetable is rich in ascorbic and caffeic acids, both of which bring down the rate of water retention. According to Diamond Beauty Guide, cucumbers can have a calm and cooling effect on the skin, which can decrease inflammation and redness of the skin. Hindu Kush

SECTION pages 30-37

GOOD TO KNOW According to a research study published in the Journal of Holistic Nursing, GINGER can be used topically to help alleviate some of the symptoms accompanied with osteoarthritis. Because of its antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory effect, ginger has been shown to play a big role as an anti-arthritic substance. Made with organic dry ground ginger and purified water, a patch was made and applied to painful joints for 30 minutes. The research study showed that symptoms were greatly improved.

D

eep in the harsh climate of the Hindu Kush Mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the marijuana strain Hindu Kush was born. Because this strain originated in such a strident environment, the plant developed a thick coating of crystal trichomes to protect itself. These crystals are honored and sought after by many marijuana horticulturists, hash developers in particular. When smoking the flower, a sweet, earthy, sandalwood taste and aroma are present. Hindu Kush is used medically for alleviating stress and is a great strain to fight chronic pain. The strain is indica pure, meaning that it has a deep relaxation effect. It is used primarily for stress, pain relief, insomnia, depression and headaches. The overall effects include relaxation, sleepiness, happiness and euphoria. The most notable negative effects of Hindu Kush are dry mouth and eyes and mild dizziness. OG #18 is available at Earth’s Healing Dispensary, located at 2075 E. Benson Hwy. and 78 W. River Rd., in Tucson. For more information, visit EarthsHealing.org. See ad, page 33.

GOOD TO KNOW Although the outside of a POMEGRANATE may not be the prettiest of the many fruits to choose from, they are delicious and loaded with numerous vitamins, especially A, C and E. Pomegranate has a huge number of antioxidants nestled in the edible seeds—three times more than found in green tea. Many people are unaware that the peeling, bark and leaves of the plant can not only help, but also cure some stomach disorders. Making and drinking a tea from the leaves can also help curb diarrhea caused by a number of digestive tract issues.

M

edical marijuana patients in Tucson have many different strains to choose from when visiting a dispensary. Having so many choices can oftentimes create anxiety or confusion when looking to treat symptoms. Having some knowledge of what types of cannabis there are, and the effects they will have, is a good start. In fact, different strains—indica, sativa, hybrid or CBD—can help patients with varied symptoms. Indica strains are known for providing sedation and are used mostly at night. Indicas are best for patients who may be treating pain and insomnia and not recommended for day use or productivity. Sativa strains provide patients with energy and have uplifting effects. Many patients use sativa strains during daytime hours before physical activity like cleaning house, working out or tasks that require productivity or energy. Medically, sativa dominant strains are often used to treat depression and fatigue. Hybrid strains are in between the indica-sativa spectrum, depending on the traits they inherit from their parent strains, which often becomes a perfect balance. Many patients use hybrids for afternoon medication. CBD rich strains have a low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, designed to help alleviate pain and anxiety without any psychoactive effects. This means users will not get the “high” feeling often associated with cannabis ingestion. One of the most popular and universal indica strains is Purple Punch. It’s known as a great pain relieving strain. It is a cross between Grand Daddy Purple and Larry

GOOD TO KNOW DANDELION contains magnesium and zinc. These help detoxify the skin and, in turn, keep the pores free and clean of bacteria. It’s beneficial in helping treat acne, eczema and other skin difficulties. Not only are the flowers and leaves edible, the white sap from its stalk is used in many topical treatments for skin problems. People suffering from environmental allergies should be cautious while using products containing dandelion. 36

OG and one of the most eye-catching strains that is grown. Its color is deep green and purple, often covered with a layer of frosty trichomes. It tastes of sweet berries or grape candy. The effects are very much indica, offering relaxation and euphoria and assisting with sleep, pain and anxiety. This excellent indica is also great for managing stress, nausea and body aches. Purple Punch is grown and distributed by Tucson SAINTS Dispensary at 112 S. Kolb Rd., Tucson. For more information, call 520-886-1003 or visit TucsonSaints.com. See ad, page 34.
