newsbriefs All About Animals Rescue Adds New Location in Flint

I

n November, All About Animals Rescue’s fourth clinic opened in Flint to provide wellness care and surgery for cats and dogs. This 501(c)(3) nonprofit arranges spay/neuter services, pet wellness care, community cat management training and pet adoption. They have other clinics in Auburn Hills, Detroit and Warren. “For years, rescues, pet parents and municipalities have asked All About Animals Rescue to open a spay/neuter clinic in Flint," says Amber Sitko, president and founder of All About Animals Rescue. "It’s been a dream of ours to meet this need.” “The Flint location’s major focus will be surgery and eventually getting the clinic to full time," continues Sitko. "But we’ll also offer walk-in wellness care and workshops, like winter shelter building for community cats. Wellness care is provided Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m." “All About Animals Rescue’s mission is simple and short: no more homeless pets. We’re now the largest high-quality, high-capacity, low-cost spay/neuter clinic in Michigan. Last year 27,019 cats and dogs were sterilized; 5,000 of those were community cats who came through our Trap-Neuter-Return program.” The Flint All About Animals Rescue clinic is located at 507 W. Atherton Rd. For more information, call 810-780-4978, email Clinic@AllAboutAnimalsRescue.org or visit AllAboutAnimalsRescue.org.

Milk Chocolate Also Benefits Heart Health

H

igh-cacao dark chocolate contains high levels of flavanol, a compound known for its heart health benefits, but less is known about diluted foods such as milk chocolate candy. Harvard researchers followed 55,502 subjects for 13 years, comparing levels of high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease to lifestyle traits. They found those eating one to three servings of chocolate a month (including milk chocolate) displayed a 10 percent lower r i s k o f irregular heartbeat than those eating an ounce or less a month. Eating one serving per week of chocolate yielded a 17 percent lower risk and two to six servings a week 20 percent, and then leveled off after eating one or more servings per day. “Eating excessive amounts of chocolate is not recommended, because many chocolate products are high in calories from sugar and fat, and could lead to weight gain and other metabolic problems, advises Elizabeth Mostofsky, author of the study.

Gut Bacteria Imbalance Linked to Chronic Fatigue

Pink Noise While Asleep Helps Memory

ifty healthy patients and 50 with chronic fatigue syndrome were tested for bacteria and immune molecules by researchers from Columbia University. They discovered that imbalances in the levels of certain gut bacteria are prevalent in individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome, a disorder often accompanied by extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pain, cognitive issues and insomnia.

esearchers from Northwestern University have found that acoustic stimulation using pink noise (random sound with more low frequencies than white noise) increases slow-wave brain activity, thus improving sleepdependent memory retention. Thirteen mature adults completed two nights of sleep; one with the pink noise and one without, in random order. Specific brainwave activity increased during the periods when the pink noise was being delivered, suggesting that it could help older adults preserve some memory functions.

R

esearchers from the University of Oxford, in the UK, have found that infants that take more daytime naps tend to develop a larger vocabulary at an earlier age than their peers by examining sleeping patterns of 246 babies between the ages of 7 months and 3 years for 10 days. Parents also completed a language analysis at the start of the study and three and six months later to determine how many words each child understood from a list 416 words typically learned in infancy. Infants that napped more frequently during the day performed better on both understanding and expressing vocabulary than the others. Natural Awakenings Magazine

Tips to Maintain Energy and Health

W

ODM/Shutterstock.com

hat, another thing to do this month? Who has time? During the busy seasons of life, we tend to mark off “to do” lists but forget to take care of our bodies except for sleep, which happens when they drop into bed after an exhausting day. Let’s take a moment to think about what we really want from this month: energy, focus and health to enjoy our families, be productive and be able to serve and give within our communities. Will burning the candle at both ends achieve those goals? Begin each day with a few minutes to enjoy the quiet and think. Write or say out loud what it is you are grateful for. This immediately improves your mood. Then schedule at least 20 minutes of intentional selfcare each day. Ideas: prep a salad or a green smoothie to nourish your body with good fuel, take time to eat consistent meals, spend that time stretching tired muscles, read a few pages of an inspiring book, take a hot bath to calm mind and body. Little actions can have big effects. Our choices always effect our future.

Boston researchers found a reduction in depressive symptoms among people that practice tai chi via 50 Chinese-Americans diagnosed with depression. They were divided into three groups. One group participated in tai chi sessions twice a week and were encouraged to practice the movements at home three times a week. Another group attended twice weekly depression education sessions and a third served as the control group. After 12 weeks, the tai chi group reported significant improvements in depression symptoms, which continued after the study was completed, measured at 24 weeks. 12

TAI CHI EASES THE BLUES

The Amazon rainforest is thought to harbor a greater diversity of trees than anywhere else on Earth, but the exact number has long been a mystery. In 2013, scientists estimated that the number of species was around 16,000, but no actual count had been done. In a new paper in Scientific Reports, researchers delved into museum collections from around the world to confirm the current number of tree species recorded in the Amazon and assess possibilities of those yet to be discovered. “Since 1900, between 50 and 200 new trees have been discovered in the Amazon every year,” notes Nigel Pitman, a Mellon senior conservation ecologist with the Field Museum. “Our analysis suggests that we won’t finish discovering new tree species there for three more centuries.” The study relied upon the digitization of museum collections data— photographs and digital records—of the specimens housed there and shared worldwide through aggregator sites like IDigBio.org. “It gives scientists a better sense of what’s actually growing in the Amazon Basin, aiding conservation efforts,” says Pitman.

New Tech May Relieve Elder Isolation

Approximately a third of those older than 65 and half of elders at least 85 live alone, as do many people with illnesses and mental disorders. All can suffer from feelings of profound loneliness. Emerging virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies provide avenues to alleviate such isolation, instilling contentment, peace of mind, enrichment, fun, a sense of companionship and contributing to physical and mental health. Instead of passively watching TV, seniors can travel virtually to World Heritage sites, revisit old haunts or even attend family events they would otherwise miss. In terms of benefits attained, VR is predicted to measurably improve seniors’ quality of life. Healthcare applications of AI and telemedicine include reminders to eat, be active or take medications, perhaps assisted by a robotic companion that can share information with practitioners, children, caregivers and emergency personnel. Social applications include helping to form and maintain social connections. It may also serve as a personal concierge by reminding seniors of appointments, playing games with them and initiating dialogue to spark outward engagement.

Microplastic Mess Threatens World Oceans Scientists from the University of Hull and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have published research in the journal Science of the Total Environment showing levels of microplastics are five times higher in the Antarctic than previous estimates. Co-author Dr. Claire Waluda, a BAS biologist, says, “We have monitored the presence of large plastic items in Antarctica for more than 30 years. While we know that bigger pieces can be ingested by seabirds or cause entanglements in seals, the effects of microplastics on marine animals in the Southern Ocean are as yet unknown.” The tiny beads of plastic come from cosmetics or are shreddings from larger plastic items like clothing or bottles. According to United Nations sources, they may number as many as 51 trillion particles across the seafloor, throughout the oceans and on beaches worldwide. They are considered a serious threat to marine life in general. More international monitoring of the situation is needed, including a requirement for all polar research stations to provide waste treatment options. A Chilling Alternative Cryotherapy Gains Popularity as a Noninvasive Option for Health and Beauty

Rolfing® for Body Realignment Improve Movement and Reduce Pain

Rolfing® helps realign structural relationships of the body that have been impacted from:

Melanie Mitchell (right), of Boost Cryospa, supervises a client receiving cryotherapy

he use of cryotherapy is making the rounds these days, with proponents finding a variety of methods by which to incorporate it into their lives. Not a medical procedure, this noninvasive alternative is credited with improving health fast. Some applaud cryotherapy’s importance in weight loss and other forms of body management, and many connect its influence with the treatment or prevention of disease. Developed during the late 1970s by Japanese physicians, cryotherapy debuted in the form of cryochambers that used either liquid nitrogen or refrigerated air to keep temperatures below -100 degrees Celsius, or -212 degrees Fahrenheit. The trend traveled to Europe within the next decade, followed by Australia and western areas of the United States. Today, entire spas are dedicated to the invention and common acceptance has followed. Cryotherapy is promoted for two primary reasons: (1) treatment of delayed muscle soreness caused by exercise-induced damage and (2) to relieve inflammation and soreness brought on by chronic diseases from multiple sclerosis to ankylosing spondylitis, which causes spinal problems. “It is becoming more popular because celebrities are doing it. Athletes are doing it,” says Melanie Mitchell, manager of Boost Cryospa in West Bloomfield, which opened in 2016. Mitchell says Boost Cryospa works with clients of all ages, most frequently to treat arthritis and fibromyalgia pain, but even a pulled muscle can benefit from the treatment. Typically, cryotherapy treatment is completed in increments as opposed to a single session, occurring on one day or spread over several. For whole-body treatment, clients strip to their underwear and wear socks and gloves, dry off any sweat and then enter a chamber for one to three minutes per session. Their heads are elevated to clear the top of the chamber, so they breathe only the air in the surrounding room. The immediate effects, according to Mitchell, are constricted blood vessels, Natural Awakenings Magazine

thus improving immunity and cellular metabolism. Also, cryotherapy slows nerve conduction to calm the natural flight-orfight response, enhancing other healing responses and releasing endorphins and anti-inflammatory molecules. Experts explain that the importance of attention to muscle soreness prevents muscle length from shrinking as well as halts decreased muscle force, flexibility and range of motion. “Two to three minutes is all it takes,” Mitchell says. "The therapy is well tolerated, even among patients who think they cannot stand being cold. They really do enjoy the feeling afterwards.” Use is considered safe when supervised within the prescribed time constraints and when normal precautions are taken, although debate continues on how effective it is. Some side effects, particularly when constraints aren’t followed, include frostbite, dizziness, loss of balance and a rise in blood pressure. Occasional temporary side effects include nerve irritation or tissue that experiences unusual tingling or numbness, redness or skin irritation. 12 Happy Holiday Tips

How to Really Enjoy the Season by Dianne Bischoff James

F

eelings of comfort and joy can seem elusive when the holiday to-do list looms or runs amok. The season can seem more like an endless burden than a parade of cheerful events and glad tidings. Amidst celebratory chaos, these simple rules will help restore inner peace and create greater happiness.

1

Eschew Perfection Guests are much more interested in filling their stomachs with great food than judging the scuff marks and wall dings. The perfection of the season is found in the special moments when families and friends sit down together.

2

Pay Attention to the Smiles The approaching holidays encourage more shared smiles, kind words and thoughtful gestures. While out and about, look for the grins and well wishes. Hold the door open for others and offer a friendly greeting to store clerks. We’ll find ourselves smiling even more, because thoughtfulness is contagious.

3

Do Nothing for 15 Minutes It’s amazing how refreshed we feel when we take a few minutes to sit in a comfortable chair and simply expe-

rience a moment of stillness. Inner quiet allows the mind to relax and reinvest energy in the body, so we can return to holiday activities with renewed zest.

4

Give Each Person a Special Gift Think of something thoughtful that both the giver and receiver enjoy doing together and write a promissory note for the shared experience, such as a free backrub, a day spent downtown, a personal manicure or a movie the other person wants to see.

5

Take Advantage of Extended Shopping Hours To avoid crowds and lines, schedule a late-night power-shopping trip. This is the easiest way to manage a department store visit with sanity, have easy access to the shelves and get immediate service.

6

Take a Holiday Binge Day Designate a day with no limits and no self-judgment. For anyone that mentally monitors their calories or sweets, claim a binge day out loud with permission for total holiday munching freedom. The next day, we can reinstate discipline.

7

Sing While We Work Nothing makes meal preparation tasks go faster than crooning along to our favorite carols. Turn up Susan Boyle’s O Holy Night and soon your lungs will be full of air, your heart filled with sentiment, and the turkey stuffed with seasonal goodness will be ready to go into the oven.

8

Express Feelings in a Healthy Way Family gatherings can sometimes test our boundaries and patience. Avoid repressing feelings by finding a way to speak a personal truth in the moment, in a calm and healthy fashion. It’s better than returning home stewing about what we wish we could or should have said.

Other Onsite Services Available: • Applied Kinesiology • Pediatric & Pregnancy Care • Nutritional Counseling • Massage Therapy Most insurances accepted

9

Assign Roles to Household Helpers The holiday load is lighter when everyone pitches in. Assign specific roles to household members with clear responsibilities, from taking out the garbage to setting the table and washing up.

11

Express Gratitude at the Table Loving feelings can never be expressed enough, so use the holiday as an opportunity to tell others how important they are to you. Create a heartfelt moment at the table by sharing at least one thing that you’re truly grateful for, and ask everyone else to do the same.

12

Go Outside for Fun in Nature Hiking in a nearby forest preserve, skating, sledding or building a snow fort with the kids not only burns energy, but is emotionally exhilarating for the whole family. Pick an outdoor activity, don appropriate togs, and share in the laughter and serenity of a sparkling winter day. AWAKE PARENTING Raising Connected, Confident Kids by Judith Fertig

O

ne of the greatest challenges parents face is connecting with their children in deep and meaningful ways. The aim of awakened families is to raise strong and emotionally resilient children. Parenting expert and clinical psychologist Shefali Tsabary, Ph.D., author of The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children and The Awakened Family: A Revolution in Parenting, offers mindful approaches to benefit the family—and the community. Via her practice in New York City, appearances on Oprah and online courses, Tsabary provides awareness, skills and strategies to revolutionize families. She posts videos and blogs at DrShefali.com.

How do parents know if they’re on the right track? To be awakened or conscious means to realize that we carry emotional baggage and conditioning from childhood that affects our relationship with our children. Our old ways of thinking and 18 East Michigan edition

being from our own childhood shape the manner in which we react and interact today. Awakened parents are constantly evolving into their truest and most authentic selves. When parents undertake a daily practice of mindfulness and awareness, they begin to extricate themselves from blind reactivity to see how every problem with their children is a call to their own awakening. Parents will know they are on the right track because they will connect more with their children, empowering them to think and live autonomously—separate from a parent’s fantasies and expectations.

How can each family member connect with their true self? Parents need to understand that the path to creating a connected relationship with their children is to first create one with themselves. Realizing this, they consider their own inner growth a high priority. Children need to learn who they are and what they really enjoy. Parents

How do children benefit from conscious or awakened parenting? Conscious parenting mandates that we place the task of connecting with our children front and center, especially before correcting them. Admonishing and punishing them becomes secondary to the main imperative of conscious connection. It’s crucial we realize we aren’t raising a “mini-me”, but a spirit throbbing with its own signature. Thus, it’s vital to separate in our mind who we are from who each child is. Children aren’t ours to possess or own in any way. When we know this in the depths of our soul, we tailor their raising to their needs, rather than molding them to fit our needs. Children raised in this way grow up to be fearless and infinitely resilient, knowing that their purpose in life is to live in their most authentic and true way. Conflicts decrease and conscious, connected communication increases.

What can parents do when they fall back into old patterns, shaming children or doing other things that create distance?

When this happens, parents need to sit with themselves and look deeply within, asking: “What is it about me that feels the need to deride, scorn and shame my children?” In such introspection, they might discover triggers from old wounds that have nothing to do with a child’s behavior. When they can see the internal link, they can begin to make the transformations they need. As a parent, I have learned that my role is to step aside, stay in infinite possibility, heal my own wounds, fill my own bucket and let my child fly.

How can closer, awakened families co-create a better world via the ripple effect?

Children raised in this manner naturally help advocate for peace and harmony in all of their relationships; incidents of bullying, anxiety and discrediting one’s self and others decrease exponentially. thoughts and you change your world. ~Norman Vincent Peale

eriodontal disease is pretty scary sounding. And for some of our southeast Michigan patients, it can be. If we have diagnosed you with periodontal disease, you are not alone. Many adults and teens in the U.S. suffer from some form of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a perfectly treatable and preventable condition that many of our patients know little about. If you’ve been told you are suffering from periodontal disease, here is the basic information about this common dental condition. What is Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease is essentially a condition caused by the build-up of bacteria and plaque on your teeth. This build-up of bacteria and plaque or “tartar” can irritate your gums and cause swelling and bleeding. In extreme cases, this irritation can get under the gums and cause damage to the roots of your teeth and in the worst case, can damage your jaw bones. Periodontal disease is most often seen in adults, and more often men than women. However, teenagers can develop mild cases of periodontal disease during puberty when their hormones are changing. Other Factors that Contribute to Periodontal Disease While bacteria and plaque build-up are the main cause of periodontal disease, there are other factors that can contribute to your likelihood of developing some level of periodontal disease. Genes – Some people are more likely to develop periodontal disease if others in their family have been susceptible to increased plaque and bacteria build-up. However, good oral care can prevent periodontal disease, even for these individuals. Tobacco Use – If you smoke or use other types of tobacco, you are more likely to develop periodontal disease. Tobacco users tend to collect more tartar on their teeth, increasing their chances of developing periodontal disease. Smoking can also make periodontal disease resistant to treatment.

Crowded Mouth – This can be a big problem for people with crooked teeth, braces, partials or just too many teeth. Plaque can build up around braces, in tight spaces around teeth, and between bridges or other dental fixtures. Stress – While stress on its own won’t cause periodontal disease, it can make it harder to treat. Because your immune system is weakened by stress, infections caused by plaque and bacteria can quickly take hold in your mouth. Hormones – This is mostly the case for women. Changes in your hormones during pregnancy and menopause can cause changes in your mouth as well. This can contribute to an increased risk for periodontal disease. Treating Periodontal Disease If periodontal disease is caught early, it can easily be treated at home with an improved routine of oral care. This includes improvements with brushing and flossing habits, the use of mouth washes and visiting your dentist on a regular basis. More advanced stages of periodontal disease may require deep cleaning that is done by your dentist or dental hygienist. This process is called plaque scaling and planing. This process removes plaque that has built up under the gums, and can take a few appointments to completely clean the teeth. Periodontal disease isn’t something to mess around with. If you notice that your gums are swollen and tend to bleed when you brush, it’s time to get to the dentist for a good cleaning and care for developing periodontal disease. If caught and treated early, periodontal disease is completely manageable with at home care. If you are looking for a dentist in the Shelby Township area who can care for your whole family, HPS Advanced Dental Care is ready to help. Lynne McTaggart on the

POWER OF GROUP INTENTION by April Thompson

T

hirty years ago, speaker, author and journalist Lynne McTaggart recovered from an illness using alternative approaches to health. Since then, she’s been exploring the frontiers of healing through consciousness and alternative medicine. In the 1990s, McTaggart, who lives in London, started a newsletter called What Doctors Don’t Tell You, now an international magazine and popular platform at wddty.com that cites thousands of resources showing what works and doesn’t work in conventional and alternative medicine and how to beat chronic conditions naturally. McTaggart’s seven books include The Intention Experiment, The Field, The Bond and most recently, The Power of Eight. Her latest work examines the transformative power of small groups of people sending thoughts together for a common goal.

Can you summarize the results of your experiments of healing through collective intentions? We’ve done hundreds of experiments using small and large groups; 30 were tightly controlled scientific studies conducted in conjunction with researchers at institutions such as the University of Arizona, University of California and Penn State University. The experiments have involved all kinds of intentions, ranging from the relatively simple to the impossibly complex. The large-scale intention experiments involved upwards of 25,000 participants remotely logging onto a website to view photos of the targets, 20

sometimes 8,000 miles away, and sending them a well-defined intention, like changing the pH balance of water or healing a war veteran of post-traumatic stress disorder. To date, 26 of those 30 experiments resulted in positive, measurable, mainly scientifically significant effects. We’ve seen the pH of water change by a full pH number and seen seeds grow twice as much as control seeds. We also conducted three peace intention experiments with interesting results: After our eight-day intention for Sri Lanka during its civil war, violence levels fell; the government had won several decisive battles that week; and within a few months that 25-year war was over. We can’t say with certainty that we had a hand in this, but our other peace experiments showed similar results. If it happens a few more times, that becomes compelling.

of eight” concept. I’ve discovered all that’s needed is a group, whether it’s eight or 8,000. In a group, we seem to lose our sense of individuality and separation from the world. We experience an overwhelming sense of oneness with the other intenders, which may be why our influence then becomes more powerful.

How did the act of sending positive intentions affect the senders? I was most surprised by the rebound effects reported by participants, whom I started surveying after the Sri Lankan peace experiment. Thousands of ex-

What conditions were the most conducive to manifesting positive results? Was it intention, the power of the group or altruism? I think it’s a little of all of these. We’ve found that larger groups do not have a larger effect, which brought about the “power www.MichiganHealthyLiving.com

Why does “groupthink” have such a powerful, multiplicative effect? I think a huge part of it has to do with the power of getting off of yourself and setting an intention for someone else. Another is the connection created in a group. When we engage together in an activity like praying or setting altruistic intentions, we create a powerful virtual circle that proves healing to both the receivers and senders. traordinary comments related not only how participants felt during the activity, but also afterwards; they were experiencing major shifts in their relationships, health, careers and well-being. All they had done was sit individually in front of their computer holding an intention, yet they experienced the altered and mystical states of consciousness described by psychologist Abraham Maslow as “peak experiences”. Life University, a large chiropractic university in Atlanta, worked with us to study the brainwaves of participants in six “power of eight” groups and found that senders had decreased activity in their frontal and parietal lobes, which govern the sense of self. It was like the boundaries between participants were dissolving into a state of oneness. To me, this partly explained the sense of oneness, compassion and love they experienced. Andrew Newberg, director of research at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health, in Philadelphia, recorded similar effects in Sufi masters, and nuns and monks engaged in prayer and meditation, but only after years of learning certain techniques. My participants, all novices, were primed only by watching a 13-minute YouTube video of me explaining how to send intention in a group. Group intention appears to be a fast-track to the miraculous—no experience necessary.

Colorful Good Health in Holiday Dishes by Judith Fertig

inter citrus fruits that arrive in a gift basket or show up on sale at the grocer present a welcome bright spot on winter’s darker days. Valencia and blood oranges, limes and Meyer lemons are delicious in their own right, and deserve their place on the breakfast table. Yet there are many other intriguing ways to enjoy them in vinaigrettes, salads, main dishes, baked goods and desserts. Winter citrus is full of health

benefits, just when we need them most: during the busy holiday season. To start, they help bolster our immune system, guarding against colds or helping us recover faster. Their high vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, content is water soluble. According to a comprehensive study by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, a daily intake of 400 milligrams of vitamin C can halve the incidence of colds in adults and cut their duration by 14 percent.

The flavonoid hesperidin in citrus helps boost “good” HDL cholesterol and lowers “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, report researchers in the Journal of Nutrition. In a new study in Nutritional Neuroscience, hesperidin in citrus also was found to ameliorate brain deterioration found in Alzheimer’s patients. Other studies further show that the grapefruit diet wasn’t wrong; eating half a fresh grapefruit before each meal can help us lose weight. In a study conducted at the Scripps Clinic, in La Jolla, California, and published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, researchers put overweight volunteers on an exercise plan for 12 weeks and asked them to eat either half a fresh grapefruit or drink apple juice and pop a placebo pill before each meal. The grapefruit group dropped an average of three-and-a-half pounds, compared to only one-half pound for the apple group. Limonoids, an antioxidant found in most citrus, may help guard against stomach, lung, breast and skin cancer, according to the U.S. Agricultural Research Service. Animal and human cell studies found that limonoids—especially those in fresh oranges—harbor potential as anticancer compounds. Another study in Nutritional Neuroscience showed that the volatile compound limonene, found in the rind of a lemon, can enhance memory. As nights grow colder and longer, winter citrus “adds a little sunshine to every meal,” says Jamie Schler, author of the recently released cookbook Orange Appeal: Savory & Sweet. Schler grew up in Florida, surrounded by

citrus groves between the Atlantic Coast and Indian River. “Winters meant Dad’s workbench in the garage groaning under the weight of brown paper grocery bags filled to bursting with navels, tangerines, grapefruits, Valencias and tangelos,” writes Schler. “I fondly recall trips in the old green station wagon to the groves on chilly weekend mornings where we could pick them ourselves.” Today, Schler and her husband own and operate the boutique Hotel Diderot, in Chinon, France, where life’s a feast—especially during citrus season. Unfortunately, this “help” can become elusive under the wrong type of care so it is important to find a medically trained naturopathic physician to find the possible cause(s) and to use natural approaches when needed. Chronic fatigue syndrome or Myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is a complex illness that causes extreme fatigue that generally can't be explained by any underlying medical condition. The fatigue may worsen with physical or mental activity, but doesn't improve with rest. It is defined by incapacitating fatigue that is not relieved by rest, and at least four of the following symptoms for at least six months: • worsening of symptoms while standing or sitting upright (orthostatic intolerance) • loss of memory or concentration (brain fog) • waking tired after a good night’s sleep • insomnia • muscle pain • headaches • joint pain • sore throat • tender lymph nodes in the neck or underarms • digestive issues • allergies and sensitivities to foods, odors, chemicals or noise • chills and night sweats • general malaise following physical exertion that lasts more than 24 hours What should be your plan of action in addressing CFS or any chronic health condition? When we find ourselves constantly in a high stress environment and living on the sympathetic state (fight or flight response), our body may not be able to keep up with restoring itself. This area of health is the “breakthrough” for most patients with chronic conditions and is often overlooked or neglected. If not addressed properly, this makes any treatment or therapy difficult. Chronic Inflammation: Inflammation impacts us all differently, but it definitely can zap your energy very quickly and drain your adrenal reserves. It also can wreck havoc on all systems of the body including imbalancing your hormones and neurotransmitters. Top sources of inflammation. Food sensitivities (IgE, IgG, IgA), gastrointestinal dysfunction, pathogens, environmental toxicants and internalizing emotional stressors. Hormones: We know the importance of our thyroid, adrenals and sex hormones so it wise to perform a proper baseline. Most hormones start to balance on their own when other obstacles are removed, but support can be given along the way. Nutritional Deficiencies: More common than we give credit for, but can make a huge impact when properly identified and addressed. Certain lab markers are very accurate for nutritional deficiencies, but most testing for nutritional deficiencies is not reliable. Focusing on improving the diet, supplementing with high quality/physician only nutraceuticals and using IV/IM nutrient therapies can be a slam-dunk in improving energy and overall health. Environmental Toxicants: We live in a very toxic world with known environmental toxicants that are constantly assaulting us through the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the products we use on a constant basis. These toxicants place a cumulative burden on our body’s detoxification centers including our immunological, neurological and endocrine systems, which depress their ability to function optimally. Begin exploring this area with a doctor who is properly trained in environmental medicine and knows how to test properly and perform an extensive environmental toxic exposure history.

With so many companies selling essential oils, are you confused????

How to Choose Essential Oils

“We take the stewardship of our planet seriously. Our State of the Art production process brings you the purest (essential) oils on Earth. We call it Seed To Seal®. It’s not a slogan — it’s our Calling.” (By the Founder of YOUNG LIVING™ ESSENTIAL OILS )

Y

OUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS — established over 20 years ago — laid the foundation for the company’s total commitment to using the purist seed, sustainable cultivation, optimum distillation, extensive testing of each batch of oils, and quality control inspection of each bottle to assure the purest, most potent essential oils available in the world. (SeedToSeal.com)

Today, YOUNG LIVING’S Vision has grown into a world wide, essential-oil trend, and the trend is fueled by the consumer’s strong desire to by-pass toxin-laden, synthetic scents used in many products. Unfortunately, as with any trend, many competitive companies have been spawned that attempt to convince the consumer that their products are “pure essential oils” too, but instead may utilize synthetic oil imitations, or oils made from genetically modified seeds, or oils diluted with carrier oils, or oils distilled from plants grown with pesticides and/or herbicides –all of which distorts, weakens and chemically changes the innate power of essential oils,

Y

OUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS set the standard for authenticity 20 years ago, and that same high standard is still our “Calling” today — via our strict, Seed To Seal requirements used on all our company-owned farms and distilleries (in Utah; Idaho; France; Ecuador; British Columbia; Croatia; Israel, Taiwan) as well as on our Certified Partner-farms around the world. Organizations such as the the American College of Physicians and the World Health Organization (WHO) now acknowledge acupuncture to be an effective tool for battling pain and addiction.

Acupuncture and the Opioid Crisis Studies on the Effectiveness of Alternative Approaches for Pain and Addiction Recovery by Robert Simon

T

he opioid crisis has taken hold of the country with 60,000 people dying this last year from opioid related issues. In Michigan alone, health care providers wrote 11 million opioid prescriptions in both 2015 and 2016. To put this in perspective, there were roughly 8 million prescriptions written in 2009 for Michigan's 9.9 million citizens. With such a massive escalation in opioid use, we need tools outside the confines of the established Western medical model. Chinese medicine may very well play a powerful role to this end. While once considered by the Western world to be something akin to voodoo, organizations such as the American College of Physicians and the World Health Organization (WHO) now acknowledge acupuncture to be an effective tool for battling pain and addiction. Many medical organizations currently advocate that people should seek out this noninvasive method for treating pain...before resorting to highly addictive medications. But what about for those who are already addicted to pain medications? While acupuncture is currently recognized for its ability to reduce pain, it 28

East Michigan edition

is less known for its value in addiction recovery, although it has been used for this express purpose for years. By 1985 over 250 hospitals and treatment centers in the US and the UK were using acupuncture to aid detoxification. Then in 1996 the WHO accepted acupuncture as a therapy for drug addiction. This was followed in 1997 with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) accepting acupuncture as an alternative addiction therapy to Western medicine. Presently over 700 drug addiction treatment centers use acupuncture as an alternative to drug therapy. But exactly how can acupuncture help people recover from pain and opioid addiction? One of the mechanisms by which acupuncture may work is through regulating the neurological system. The human body actually produces its own natural (endogenous) opioids and therefore has opioid receptors located in the brain, as well as in the spinal cord and intestinal tract. In a recent study by the University of Michigan, neuroscientist Richard Harris made an interesting discovery. In his trial, genuine acupuncture (utilizing classical acupuncture points and the insertion of needles into the skin)

was compared with a control group who received “sham” acupuncture (a placebo method using a retractable pen like device that does not penetrate the skin and was applied on areas of the body not associated with acupuncture points). The latter method is akin to a sugar pill and is used to effectively trick the patient into believing they are receiving real acupuncture. This helps researchers discern if the benefits attributed to acupuncture are truly caused by precise needle insertion into specific points on the body, or are merely an effect of a patient’s mind and positive expectations. Harris observed that sham acupuncture did indeed cause a reduction in pain similar to genuine acupuncture. Moreover, opioid receptors in the brain had become occupied with endorphins, leaving few unoccupied receptors present. When the receptors are occupied, pain signals cannot be sent. He expected genuine acupuncture to yield the same results by the same mechanism. Yet, what actually transpired in the brain was quite startling. Genuine acupuncture caused a reduction in pain similar to the placebo, but the number of unoccupied receptors actually increased dramatically. However, because the pain was indeed reduced, it was concluded that it was not a drop in endorphin levels that researchers were observing but rather an increase in the amount of opioid receptors being expressed. It may be that acupuncture actually works in part by regulating the neurological system, bringing it back

into homeostasis for both addiction and pain. Moreover, acupuncture may help to resolve the underlying disease process rather than just acting as a quick symptomatic fix. But that’s theory. What about treating addiction in actual practice? That’s where we turn our attention to New York. Beginning in 1974, the South Bronx’s Lincoln recovery center spent 10 years establishing the NADA (National Acupuncture Detox Association) 5 point protocol for treating opioid and many other forms of chemical addictions. The NADA protocol involves the

careful placement of acupuncture needles in five specific acupuncture points on the ear. The needles are left in place for 30 to 45 minutes and then removed. This method is now used around the world to help people recover from addiction. In my own practice, I treat patients for addiction by combining the NADA protocol with a therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Addiction - be it opioid, nicotine or sugar - invariably has an emotional component. EFT bridges the gap between psychology and Chinese medicine. An EFT practitioner identifies a patient’s underlying emotional trigger and then taps specific acupuncture points while the patient focuses on the emotions associated with the addiction. EFT has gained notoriety as a self treatment for emotional issues and pain, but its benefits really shine when a trained practitioner is guiding a patient through their emotional barriers. Despite studies supporting the efficacy of acupuncture for addiction and pain, there are always skeptics who refute such evidence. So who is correct?

Ironically, it is increasingly the Western physicians who are becoming the biggest champions of acupuncture and are suggesting it and other alternative therapies for one reason: they see their patients getting better where conventional methods come up short. And as a practitioner, when a lifelong smoker tears up their last cigarette in front of you after a treatment, there is no better feeling or evidence that this medicine works. Robert Simon practices in Franklin Village, MI. He is a registered and licensed Acupuncturist, a graduate of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, a clinical massage therapist and has trained in craniosacral therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, NAET allergy elimination, pain reflex release technique and many other therapies for treating pain, dysfunction, and internal medical issues. se it up, wear it out, make do or do without,” was the motto of past generations. Today, it’s recycle, repurpose and reinvent. Nostalgia is making a comeback. It’s tempting to revert to successful old-fashioned ways; it’s even better to update the how-to of natural eco-living.

Preserve Food “There are tradeoffs between convenience and environmental impact,” says Kathleen Hanover, executive creative director at Imagine That Creative Marketing Services, in Dayton, Ohio. “I’d love to freeze all of our family’s produce, but after two power outages, I can veggies, too. Steam canners for jams, jellies, tomatoes and high-acid foods use three inches of water and 10 minutes of energy.” Shel Horowitz, a consultant for Green and Profitable and co-author of Guerrilla Marketing to Heal the World, joined a food co-op in the 1970s. Today, it has 9,000 members. “I dehydrate

veggies for soup, pasta, stir-fry dishes or as tomato or zucchini chips,” he says. “Onions, shallots, garlic, leeks, celery, kale, hot peppers, tomatillos and fruit were successful; eggplant, cucumbers and rhubarb were not.”

Use It All The Traditional Line menu devised by executive chef Mark Russell, of Great Performances, a sustainability-oriented high-end catering and food service company in New York City, remarks, “Food trends have changed,” noting preserving, freezing, pickling and canning remain sound. He salutes thrifty Depression-era practices. “My grandparents picked dandelion greens to fry in bacon fat,” he says. “A salad with olive oil and fresh tomato is healthier.” Fermented grape leaves can be rolled up into dolmas filled with local grains and feta cheese instead of meat. He also blanches and freezes cauliflower leaves, warmed in butter to serve; he’s then used the whole vegetable.

The Purification Process by Michael DuBay

P

reviously, I spoke of the reacting of two raw materials, dimethylsulfoxide and hydrogen peroxide to produce Organic Sulfur. After this reaction, a purification process is needed to remove any impurities from the Organic Sulfur. Two purification processes are mostly used, distillation and crystallization. Our method, distillation is the favored process for producing the highest purity MSM, where heat is used to separate compounds by unique boiling points. When a company uses crystallization the results can be adversely affected by the use of impure solvents, potentially leaving undesirable or toxic by-products in the product. Many facilities that don’t manufacture properly with improper sanitation procedures usually have contamination. Water is a key component of the MSM production process. Many foreign MSM production facilities are located in areas where local water supplies do not meet U.S. Federal guidelines for Organic and inorganic volatiles, heavy metals, and other contaminants. That’s why when folks call and ask how much is your MSM, they don’t take into consideration the above mentioned facts and base their decision solely on price. Organic Sulfur is effective only when in its purest form. Michael DuBay is founder of Bozoomer, a Michigan based company and one of the few that produces Organic Sulfur in the U.S. Visit: Bozoomer.com or call Michael at 800-937-0166 if you are interested in our Organic Sulfer. Apply Gardening Tips Containers ease gardening, especially for tomatoes. Hanover repurposes plastic cat litter buckets. “They’re sturdy and hold up in cold weather,” she says. “Alpaca poop fertilizer supplied by a neighbor doesn’t smell and plants thrive.” Ocala, Florida, reiki master and teacher Debi Goldben employs nature’s bounty at home. “Downspouts collect rainwater for the garden, and it’s much better than chemically treated city water,” she says. Some municipalities, including in Colorado, regulate rainwater collection, mandating the size and number of barrels per property “for outdoor use only”.

The Instant Pot works like a crock pot, pressure cooker, steamer, sauté pan, warming pot, rice cooker and yogurt maker, replacing seven appliances.

Employ Onsite Power “My Hadley, Massachusetts, farmhouse, built in 1743, might be the oldest solar home in the country,” muses Horowitz. “Our farmer neighbors have a methane digester to turn cow poop and restaurant waste into electricity and heat. We’ll hook up to it to replace heating oil.”

Sew Up Repairs Anca Gooje, owner of Chid Kala, a natural ingredient lotion maker in Scarborough, Maine, uses colorful patches to repair tears and update the look of her two children’s clothing. She also recompressed their sofa’s inner springs to their original shape by encasing them in fabric. “It was timeconsuming, but only cost a few dollars for fabric,” she relates. “Updating avoided creating more landfill. For a fresh look, I made a new cover.”

Multipurpose a Cook Pot “My mother believed pressure cookers would explode, so I bought an Instant Pot and changed the way I cook,” says Sue Ann Jaffarian, a Los Angeles paralegal and mystery writer. “I have a demanding day job and writing deadlines. I toss in healthy ingredients and have a simple homemade meal, often vegan, in a minute. Soup, stew, risotto, pasta, chili, pudding, brown rice and oatmeal work well. It doesn’t heat up the kitchen, either.”

Nasturtium leaves are fermented, seeds and stems pickled and flowers puréed. “I make nasturtium flower coulis, bright orange and spicy, to dollop on freshwater fish,” Russell says. “Stems are minced into grain salads and seeds sprinkled on slabs of beefsteak tomatoes. Leaves, soft from fermentation, wrap around fresh goat cheese, shred into coleslaw or pair with steamed basmati rice.”

Make Holiday Décor “Retro-style repurposing is smart, fun and easy,” says upstate New York lifestyle writer and cookbook author Cynthia O’Connor O’Hara. “I glued together assorted cups, saucers and plates with glass-specific glue to create tiered servers that double as a centerpiece. Check your house to find dishware that will look nice together.” It’s satisfying to combine experiences with updated technology, save time and support a healthier planet, both during the holidays and year-round. INSPIRED LIVING Five Ways to Make the New Year Sparkle by Kelly Martinsen

Volunteer – A common excuse for not volunteering is, “I don’t have the time.” Next year, make the time. When researchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and happiness in a large group of American adults, they found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were.

nspiration may strike anywhere, at any time. The trick is nurturing the process to appear on demand when we need it most. Often, an inspiration is sparked when we perceive someone being selfless, courageous, physically extraordinary or deliciously creative. However, we don’t need to wait for outside stimulus when we can discover internal stirrings by invoking any of these self-inspiring tips. Just Do It – The Nike slogan has never

been more appropriate. We all have something we’ve thought about doing or trying. Whether traveling to a new location, trying a different sport, joining a new-to-us group or club, or making more friends, don’t put it off—just do it. Defeat allodoxaphobia – It’s the fear of others’ negative opinions. Everyone suffers from this to some extent, and it can hinder us from living our best life. Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt remarked, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you

No Matter What,

You Have...

Gratitude – This is the big one. One way to be and stay inspired is by starting off each day in a state of gratitude. Every morning before getting out of bed, think of at least three things to be grateful for. By doing this, we recognize the blessings we have and greet the day in a positive frame of mind. It’s a perfect way to end each day, too. When someone routinely inquires, “How are you?” answer, “I am grateful.” Our time on Earth is not infinite. With only so many days promised, let’s vow to live them inspired. Fluoride: The Great Misconception by Dr. David W. Regiani

T

oothpaste and mouth rinse companies tell you to use their fluoride-containing product. Have you ever heard any of them talk about health and safety? Let’s look at some facts:

Fluoride Alert

4 There has NEVER been a single randomized clinical trial or long-term study to prove fluoridation actually works.

Excess in Food and Tap Water Harms Pets

4 Fluoride has NEVER been FDA approved for ingestion AND ingesting fluoride presents serious health risks, particularly in children. 4 Dental fluorosis (spots on teeth) is the first visible sign of fluoride toxicity and a warning sign. According to 2010 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 23% of Americans aged 6-49 and 41% of children aged 12-15 show some fluorosis. The data shows 58% of children aged 6-19 have fluorosis. Dietary supplements must go through extensive testing and approval before being sold for human consumption. Specific dosage amounts are on every label. However, in 1975 alone the FDA rejected 35 new drug applications for fluoride vitamins. When it comes to fluoride whether in water, coffee, or soda, or cooked into soup, pasta, rice or other foods, we are told something different: “Drink as much as you like; you’ll get the right dose.” Hmm... David W Regiani D.D.S., N.M.D., M.I.A.O.M.T., practices at Regiani Holistic Dental Center, 10435 Ortonville Rd., Clarkston, MI. For more info, visit RegianiDental.com or call 248627-4934. by Karen Becker

n 2009, an Environmental Working Group (EWG) study found that bone meal and animal byproducts in eight of 10 major national dog food brands contain fluoride in amounts between 1.6 and 2.5 times higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended maximum dose in drinking water. Some fluoride from tap water used in the manufacturing of pet food contributes to this. Olga Naidenko, Ph.D., lead researcher of the study, remarks, “A failed regulatory system and suspect practices by some in the pet food industry puts countless dogs at risk of ingesting excessive fluoride.” Fluoride occurs naturally in rocks, soil and thus some food plants and water supplies. More enters food via use of fluoride-based pesticides and commercial processing facilities. The EWG advises that two-thirds of all Americans, along with pets and farm animals, are exposed to artificially fluoridated tap water.

Fluoride Dangers to Humans While fluoride exposure hasn’t been studied in dogs or cats, according to

Dr. Joseph Mercola, ample research points to the dangers of fluoride to human health, including: n Arthritis n Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) n Bone fractures n Brain damage and lowered IQ n Damaged sperm and increased infertility n Deactivation of 62 enzymes n Dementia n Disrupted immune system n Disrupted synthesis of collagen n Genetic damage and cell death n Hyperactivity and/or lethargy n Impaired sleep (inhibits melatonin produced by the pineal gland) n Increased lead absorption n Increased tumor and cancer rate n Inhibited formation of antibodies n Lowered thyroid function n Muscle disorders

Fluoride Dangers to Canines Dogs are at substantial long-term risk for exposure to unacceptably high levels of fluoride. They are, for example, at

significantly higher probability for bone cancer than humans, with more than 8,000 cases diagnosed each year in the U.S., compared with about 900 human cases. According to the EWG, a dog drinking normal amounts of tap water would be exposed to 0.05 to 0.1 milligram (mg) of fluoride per kilogram (kg) of body weight daily. A 10-pound puppy that daily eats about a cup of dog food would ingest approximately 0.25 mg fluoride per kg body weight a day, based on average fluoride content in the eight contaminated brands it tested. Altogether, the puppy could be exposed to 3.5 times more fluoride than the EPA allows in drinking water. Large breed puppies may be exposed to even more fluoride due to higher water intake. Whatever the size and the appetite of a dog, combined fluoride exposure from food and water can easily become unsafe. Eating the same food every day, they may be constantly consuming more fluoride than is healthy for normal growth, leading to health problems and higher veterinary bills later in life.

Prevent High Ingestion of Fluoride

The EWG recommends owners purchase pet foods free of bone meal and other meals made from animal byproducts. It also suggests that government set fluoride limits in pet food that protect both puppies and large breeds most at risk for bone cancer. Dr. Michael W. Fox, an internationally recognized veterinarian and former vice president of the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, recommends providing pets with fluoride-free water; spring water or reverse osmosis filtered water also works well. In preparing homemade food for a pet, make sure any added bone meal is free of fluoride and lead. Ethical bone meal producers will test for these contaminants; verify with the source. Fox suggests a good bone meal substitute might be fossilized oyster shell, dolomite or a synthesized or refined calcium supplement like calcium citrate, ascorbate, stearate or gluconate. Or, consider a pure tricalcium and dicalcium phosphate, blended with magnesium. Fox attests that bones from longer-lived food animals such as dairy cows, laying hens and breeding stock likely contain higher levels of fluoride than shorter-lived animals like chickens, calves and lambs. In his article “Fluoride in Pet Food: A Serious Health Risk for Both Dogs and Cats?” he writes: “Fluorides accumulate in farmed animals over time from phosphate fertilizers, phosphate supplements, bone meal and fish meal supplements and pesticide and industrial-pollution-contaminated pastures and animal feed. The bones, fins, gills and scales of fish are often high in fluoride.” He recommends raw food diets that avoid ground bone from older animals like beef cattle and adult sheep. Dr. Karen Becker is a proactive and integrative veterinarian in the Chicago area, consults internationally and writes Mercola Healthy Pets (HealthyPets.Mercola.com). Natural Awakenings Magazine

rom computers, cell phones, smart TVs, DVR players and programmable appliances to a seemingly endless list of other electronic gadgets, we are in constant contact with unnatural electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) generated by technology. In today’s 24/7 society, invisible EMFs are inescapable; they permeate our working and living spaces. What we may not know is how they negatively impact our body’s natural sleep-wake cycle: suppressing melatonin, the hormone that controls the natural circadian rhythm, disturbing slumber and even affecting weight gain, according to University of Tel Aviv research. On the brighter side, some new technological products promise to restore balance to the body, including deeper and more restful sleep. From the Philip Stein sleep bracelet, sleep

number beds and portable sleep trackers to sleep-related apps, devices and applications, user-friendly innovations are addressing America’s sleep deprivation problem. “Philip Stein lifestyle accessories such as the sleep bracelet are designed to contribute to a better quality of life. The unique technology inside each one channels beneficial natural frequencies in the environment into your body,” says Will Stein, co-founder and president of the Philip Stein Group. “The result is to help the individual feel centered, balanced, grounded and more easily able to maintain a sense of well-being.” The company defines optimal well-being as a state of harmony achieved through physical, emotional, mental and spiritual alignment. Although natural-frequency technology was developed earlier by a group of engineers and scientists exploring various frequencies’ influence on water, the initial discovery has been attributed to ancient sages in India that intuited them. For example, 7.83 Hz, the frequency of “om”, happens to be Mother Earth’s natural heartbeat rhythm, now known as the Schumann Resonance. Aligned with the brain’s alpha and theta states, this technology of resonating frequencies has been carefully tuned and tested by Philip Stein researchers, technicians and sleep experts. Today, it is at the core of all Philip Stein products. Philip Stein’s tuning technology picks up and channels the beneficial natural frequencies that have always surrounded human beings. “We believe that all organisms have evolved or grown accustomed to these natural frequencies, and our systems are tuned to operate best with them, rather than with the increasing number of manmade frequencies we experience in the modern world,” explains Stein.

BETTER SLEEP The Philip Stein Sleep Bracelet can be a natural solution for a truly restful night’s sleep. Its Natural Frequency Technology® promotes overall wellbeing. Recommended by
