WELCOME TO THE WINTER SEASON!

Our winter mixed programme introduces two compelling dancemakers to The National Ballet of Canada repertoire. Internationally renowned choreographer David Dawson presents the company premiere of his acclaimed Anima Animus and we have a world premiere from an exciting new voice in Rena Butler.

The programme opens with George Balanchine's virtuoso Symphony in C, an opportunity to celebrate the artistry of the entire company, from the dancers’ pristine technique to the unforgettable sound of The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra.

I’m thrilled to share the work of Rena Butler, a rising star in contemporary movement. Rena is working in dialogue with selections from John’s Book of Alleged Dances for string quartet and pre-recorded tape, by celebrated American composer John Adams.

One of the first choreographers that I wanted to introduce to the artists and audiences of the National Ballet was long-time collaborator and friend David Dawson. The company premiere of Anima Animus is a dynamic and energetic work, a perfect introduction to what I envision will be a longstanding creative partnership with David.

George Balanchine created Symphony in C for Paris Opéra Ballet in 1947 as a virtuosic display of musicality and classical technique. In true Balanchine fashion, the choreography embodies the music with wonderful sensitivity and flair, paying homage to Georges Bizet’s Symphony in C Major with four brilliantly constructed movements. Each movement has a principal couple, two secondary couples and a Corps de Ballet in pristine white tutus, with the entire cast of over 50 dancers uniting for a fast-paced finale.

Alleged Dances is The National Ballet of Canada's first work by Rena Butler, winner of the Princess Grace Award and rising star in contemporary choreography. Butler's piece is set to the music of John Adams – John's Book of Alleged Dances – a set of dances he composed for the Kronos Quartet and can be played in any order. Evoking themes of memory and identity, Butler’s choreographic vignettes change order with the music for a total of three possible chronologies, giving the piece an organic quality and sense of resistance to being fixed.

British choreographer David Dawson created Anima Animus for San Francisco Ballet’s Unbound Festival of new work in 2018. An instant success, it toured throughout the US and to the UK and recently had its premiere at Teatro alla Scala. The ballet explores the fluid space between extremes and opposites and particularly Carl Jung’s gendering of the collective unconscious as anima and animus. Anima Animus is a high-octane work favouring speed and precision that sets the dancers powering across the stage to Ezio Bosso’s Violin Concerto No. 1, music that is also filled with contrasts.

Introducing New Voices DAVID DAWSON RENA BUTLER

The March programme sees The National Ballet of Canada presenting the work of both David Dawson and Rena Butler in Canadian and world premieres, reflecting Artistic Director Hope Muir’s ambition to expand the repertoire with distinct creative voices.

David Dawson has an internationally distinguished career while Rena Butler has been named a “choreographer to watch” – a Princess Grace Award-winning artist who was recently dubbed “The Epitome of Contemporary Cool” in a Dance Magazine cover story. Among many honours, Dawson is the first British choreographer to create a new work for The Mariinsky Ballet, Reverence, winner of the prestigious Golden Mask Award. Both are respected artists pushing the boundaries of our artform from unique perspectives.

“David is someone I respect immensely and have collaborated with many times,” says Muir. “I’ve seen how his work creates space for artistic development and I wanted to provide that opportunity to our dancers. When I witnessed the world premiere of Anima Animus I was so invigorated by the experience – by the music and the expansiveness of the choreographic

language. It’s an ideal introduction to what I envision will be a longstanding relationship with David.”

Dawson is Associate Artist at Het Nationale and at Semperoper Ballett and he has created numerous works internationally, including his full-length Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Giselle and Tristan + Isolde. He has won the Choo San Goh Award and the Prix Benois de la Danse for Choreography, which he has also juried. Dawson created Anima Animus for San Francisco Ballet in 2018 and it is a study in contrasts, most meaningful among them Carl Jung’s concept of anima, the female aspect of the male psyche, and animus, the male aspect of the female psyche. “Within classical ballet there have been traditions that I wanted to question and try to evolve,” says Dawson. “I wanted to create choreography that was less gender biased. men’s choreography and the men dance female choreography. In the first and third movements of the ballet, the choreographic language is shared without the limitations of the traditional rules while also creating a counterpoint to this during the second movement, with the focus on the art of the pas de deux or partnering, and how far in the opposite direction we could go.”

Butler is making her National Ballet debut with a world premiere set to the music of American composer John Adams. She is working with Adams’ 1994 composition for the Kronos Quartet, John’s Book of Alleged Dances for String Quartet and pre-reocrded tape, that can be played in any order.

“My piece is a dialogue with John’s score that explores a series of personal recollections of events and the repeated action of attempting to control, maintain, restructure and dismantle them,” says Butler. “Abstracted through a game of hide and seek, this ballet seeks to source various components of veracity as the viewer examines how light and shadow, physicality, text and sequence of sound are obscured to deconstruct and underscore one’s own sense of self in a maelstrom of memory.”

Butler’s collaboration with the National Ballet deepens her existing relationship with Hope Muir, who commissioned original work from her at her previous company.

“Rena has a contagious curiosity in all disciplines,” says Muir. “She is a creative force in the studio and the world is taking notice, which makes the timing of this premiere really exciting. When I think about expanding the National Ballet repertoire with new voices, she is forefront in my mind.”

This programme is certain to convey dance’s limitless potential as a site of experimentation –aesthetically, musically and as a vehicle for ideas.

CELEBRATING JOYSANNE SIDIMUS

Acclaimed Dancer, Répétiteur and Advocate Retires After 38 Years

The National Ballet of Canada is proud to celebrate Joysanne Sidimus as she retires from her career as one of the world’s pre-eminent George Balanchine répétiteurs. Sidimus trained under Balanchine at the School of American Ballet, later joining his New York City Ballet and, with his blessing, staging her first Balanchine work – Serenade – for Pennsylvania Ballet, where she was Principal Dancer. Sidimus was Principal Dancer with The National Ballet of Canada and, later, the company’s primary Balanchine répétiteur. She completes 38 years with the National Ballet this winter staging Balanchine’s glorious Symphony in C, created for Paris Opéra Ballet in 1947.

In addition to her work in the studio, Sidimus has been a career-long advocate for artists’ wellbeing. She founded the Dancer Transition Resource Centre in Toronto, served as founding Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Artists’ Health Centre Foundation and co-founded the Canadian Senior Artists Resource Network. Sidimus received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2006.

SELECTED BIOGRAPHIES

Hope Muir is an acclaimed dancer, teacher and director whose 33-year career spans two continents and a range of classical and contemporary styles. Born in Toronto, she is one of the first graduates of Peter Schaufuss’ London Festival Ballet School and a former dancer at English National Ballet, Rambert Dance Company and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. In 2009, Hope assisted Crystal Pite with the creation of Emergence for The National Ballet of Canada and has since helped to stage the work internationally. She has assisted numerous choreographers in this capacity, staging work by Christopher Bruce, Javier De Frutos and Helen Pickett, among others. Hope is the former Assistant Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet and in 2017, she was appointed Artistic Director of Charlotte Ballet in North Carolina, where she expanded the repertoire and established the highly successful Choreographic Lab. She assumed the role of Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada on January 1, 2022.

Barry Hughson Executive Director

Barry Hughson joined The National Ballet of Canada in 2014. Since that time, the company has accelerated its trajectory of artistic growth, fiscal responsibility, community engagement and international acclaim. In 1988, Barry began his professional career as a dancer with The Washington Ballet, performing at the Kennedy Center and internationally. As an arts executive, he has led a variety of arts institutions in the US, including The Warner Theatre, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, American Repertory Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and Boston Ballet. For nine years, he served on the board of Dance/USA, North America’s largest service organization for professional dance. In partnership with Dance/USA and The Royal Ballet, Barry spearheaded the first meeting of international executive dance leadership in 2015. In Canada, Barry was a member of the Coordinating Committee for Respectful Workplaces in the Arts, where he chaired the working group responsible for the development of a nationwide Code of Conduct for the Live Performing Arts. He currently serves as a member of the Steering Committee for the Canadian Arts Coalition and as a member of the Advancement Committee for the International Society of Performing Arts.

Music Director and Principal Conductor

David Briskin is recognized as one of contemporary ballet’s most accomplished conductors and has served as Music Director and Principal Conductor since 2006. David lived and worked for 23 years as a conductor in New York City in opera, ballet and in concert. He conducted for seven years with American Ballet Theatre and was a seasonal conductor for three years with New York City Ballet. He served for 13 years as conductor for The Juilliard School’s Dance Division and has appeared with nearly all the major North American ballet companies. Internationally, he has appeared with The Royal Ballet, The Royal Swedish Ballet, The Royal Danish Ballet and Hamburg Ballet. Earlier this season, he served as Music Director for the Nureyev Legend and Legacy Gala in London which was filmed for Marquee TV and is currently being screened in cinemas across Japan. In May, David will lead an all-star cast, including Cynthia Dale and Eric McCormack, in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music at Koerner Hall. He has appeared with orchestras and opera companies in North America and abroad including Pittsburgh, Detroit, Baltimore and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras, as well as Calgary, Manitoba, and Opera Carolina, among others.

Born in London, living in Berlin, David Dawson is Associate Artist at Het Nationale Ballet, Associate Choreographer Semperoper Ballett and a prolific international dancemaker. David's work is in the repertories of many companies including Boston Ballet, Teatro alla Scala, English National Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Semperoper Balett, Mariinsky Ballet, The National Ballet of Japan, Royal New Zealand Ballet, West Australian Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Philadelphia Ballet, The Royal Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Bayerisches Staatsballett, Royal Swedish Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin and Wiener Staatsballett. Among his works are full-length productions of Romeo and Juliet, Tristan + Isolde, Swan Lake and Giselle. Other significant works include Legacy Variations, Voices, The Four Seasons, Citizen Nowhere, Anima Animus, A Million Kisses to My Skin, Empire Noir, Requiem, Four Last Songs, Affairs of the Heart, The Human Seasons, Faun(e), On the Nature of Daylight and timelapse/(Mnemosyne). David received the prestigious Le Prix Benois de la Danse Award for his breakthrough ballet The Grey Area. As the first British choreographer to choreograph for Mariinsky Ballet, he created the Golden Mask Award-winning Reverence He received the Choo-San Goh Award for The Gentle Chapters and Golden Swan Award nominations for Overture and 00:00.

Born in Sydney, Australia, Rebecca Gladstone trained with Marie Walton-Mahon and graduated from English National Ballet School, London. She danced with the Staats Ballett Berlin, Wiener Staatsballett and Semperoper Ballett, performing soloist and principal roles in both classical and contemporary works. In 2010, she became Ballet Master with Semperoper Ballett working on a wide range of repertoire and assisting many of today’s leading choreographers. Since 2016, she has worked internationally as a stager for the works of David Dawson, both staging his pieces and assisting him on new creations in numerous companies throughout the world. These companies include Het Nationale Ballet, Semperoper Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Teatro alla Scala. She also works as a guest teacher with many companies and both teaches and gives Dawson Workshops at several summer school programmes.

Since 2017, Christiane Marchant has been a stager of David Dawson’s choreography, and works as his assistant on productions internationally. She also is a resident Ballet Master and talent scout of the European School of Ballet. In 1977, she joined Maurice Béjart’s Ballet du XXe siècle and in 1980, Hamburg Ballet. Between 1993 and 2005, she was a Ballet Mistress at Semperoper Ballett, Hamburg Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, MaggioDanza in Florence and from 2005 to 2017, she was at Royal Ballet of Flanders. Christiane has been a guest teacher at Stuttgart Ballet, Teatro alla Scala, Wiener Staatsballett , The Royal Danish Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, Ballet de Santiago, Béjart Ballet Lausanne and Rome Opera. Christiane translated Suki Schorer on Balanchine Technique into French and Italian and the Basic Principles of Classical Ballet by Agrippina Vaganova into French.

Ezio Bosso was born in Turin, and at the age of 16, he made his debut in France as a soloist. He studied composition and conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, collaborating with several European orchestras. He performed as a composer, performer, conductor and member of chamber music ensembles with Royal Festival Hall, London Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Opera House, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Teatro Colón, Carnegie Hall, Teatro Regio, LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura, Auditorium Parco della Musica, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Czech National Symphony, Orquesta de Cámara de Madrid and more. Bosso’s music has been commissioned or used by the most important world-class opera institutions such as the Wiener Staatsoper, Royal Opera House, New York City Ballet, Théâtre du Châtelet, San Francisco Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet, among others. He has collaborated with great soloists, such as Mario Brunello, Francesco Manara, Roberto González and violinist Sergey Krylov and his many acknowledgements include a Green Room Award in Australia and the Syracuse New York Award. As a recording artist for Sony Classical International, Bosso has released several albums, the most recent entitled The 12th Room which won the Gold Record Award with over 50,000 copies sold. Bosso died in 2020.

From New Zealand, John Otto studied industrial design before becoming Design Assistant at New Zealand Opera, The Royal New Zealand Ballet and Opera Australia for the opening of the Sydney Opera House. Awarded a scholarship to study in London at the Motley Theatre Design Course under Margaret Harris, he made his design debut with Darius Milhaud’s Les Malheurs d’Orphée for Dutch National Opera & Ballet. He has since designed for various companies including Teatro all Scala, Semperoper Ballett, Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Holland Festival Amsterdam, Wexford Festival Opera, Aldeburgh Festival, Athens Epidaurus Festival, Sadler’s Wells, Almeida Theatre, Het Nationale Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Philadelphia Ballet and San Francisco Ballet. In Canada, he designed Handel’s opera Alcina for Vancouver Opera. Previous designs for David Dawson include The Disappeared, The World According to Us, Sweet Spell of Oblivion, The Third Light, dancingmadlybackwards, Empire Noir and Swan Lake for Scottish Ballet. Most recently, he worked on David’s new creation for Het Nationale Ballet, Legacy Variations.

Born in Asahikawa, Japan, Yumiko Takeshima studied with Miharu Ishikawa and San Francisco Ballet School. She danced with Universal Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Feld Ballet, and was a Principal Dancer with Het Nationale Ballet and Semperoper Ballett. Yumiko has designed costumes for David Dawson, William Forsythe, Jorma Elo, Alexei Ratmansky and George Balanchine. She is the Founder and the designer of YUMIKO Dancewear since 2002.

James F. Ingalls Lighting Designer,

James F. Ingalls made his National Ballet of Canada debut with Onegin in 2009. His other work in Toronto includes Tristan und Isolde, The Magic Flute and Rigoletto for Canadian Opera Company and The House of Martin Guerre for Canadian Stage Company. His work in ballet includes The Sleeping Beauty, choreographed by Alexi Ratmansky for Teatro alla Scala Ballet and American Ballet Theatre; George Balanchine’s Nutcracker and Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station for Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle; Don Quixote, Giselle and Coppélia for Het Nationale Ballet; several works for San Francisco Ballet, including Helgi Tomasson’s Silver Ladders and The Nutcracker; and Lila York’s Celts for Boston Ballet. Recent projects include The Beauty Queen of Leenane and Waiting for Godot, both directed by Gary Hynes for the Druid Theatre in Galway, Ireland, Oedipus Rex/Symphony of Psalms for Festival D’Aix-en-Provence, Iolanta/Persephone for Lyon Opera, and the world premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s Only the Sound Remains for Dutch National Opera, all directed by Peter Sellars.

Originally from Chicago, Rena Butler has previously performed with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, David Dorfman Dance, Manuel Vignoulle – M/motions, The Kevin Wynn Collection and Pasos Con Sabor Salsa Dance Company, and was Gibney Company's inaugural Choreographic Associate. In 2019, she was the recipient of the Princess Grace Award for Choreography. She has created works for various companies and institutions, including Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, BalletX, Charlotte Ballet, Whim W’Him, Boston Dance Theater, San Francisco Opera, TedXChicago Virtual Salon 3.0: Design Your Life, The Juilliard School, Gibney Company, GroundWorks DanceTheater, Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Summer Program, Parsons and more. She currently serves on the Artistic Advisory Council for Dancewave and was the featured cover story for Dance Magazine's November 2021 issue. Rena has created an eveninglength work for Norrdans in Sweden.

Composer, conductor and creative thinker, John Adams occupies a unique position in the world of music. His works stand out among contemporary classical compositions for their depth of expression, brilliance of sound, and the profoundly humanist nature of their themes. Works spanning more than three decades are among the most performed of all contemporary classical music, among them Nixon in China, Harmonielehre, Doctor Atomic, Shaker Loops, El Niño, Short Ride in a Fast Machine and The Dharma at Big Sur. Born and raised in New England, John learned the clarinet from his father and played in marching bands and community orchestras during his formative years. He began composing at age ten and his first orchestral pieces were performed while just a teenager. Nonesuch Records has recorded all of John’s music over the past three decades, with numerous Grammy awards among them. As conductor, John leads the world’s major orchestras in repertoire from Beethoven and Mozart to Stravinsky, Ives, Carter, Zappa, Glass and Ellington. Conducting engagements include the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, The Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker and BBC Symphony. John is Creative Chair of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. John has received honorary doctorates from Yale, Harvard, Northwestern, Cambridge and The Juilliard School. A provocative writer, he is author of the highly acclaimed autobiography Hallelujah Junction and is a frequent contributor to the New York Times Book Review.

Hogan McLaughlin is an American fashion designer, artist and dancer. He began his professional career as a ballet dancer, performing with the internationally acclaimed Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. In 2011, he met and collaborated with artist Daphne Guinness on his first garments, which were featured in the windows of Barneys New York Madison Avenue and at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Later that year, Hogan launched his first collection for New York Fashion Week, which was subsequently profiled by The New York Times, WWD, Vogue.com, among other publications, and had the opportunity to create custom looks for a number of high-profile clients including Lady Gaga and Billy Porter. As an illustrator, he has had the pleasure of creating official promotional images for HBO's Game of Thrones, Showtime's Penny Dreadful and History Channel's Vikings

George Balanchine transformed the world of ballet and is widely regarded as the most influential choreographer of the 20th century. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1904, Balanchine joined the State Theatre of Opera and Ballet in St. Petersburg at the age of 17. In 1924, he was invited by Serge Diaghilev to join Ballets Russes in Paris and became Ballet Master in 1925. Balanchine formed his own company, Les Ballets 1933, in Paris and shortly thereafter met American arts connoisseur Lincoln Kirstein. In 1934, the pair founded the School of American Ballet, which remains in operation to this day. Balanchine and Kirstein founded several short-lived ballet companies before forming Ballet Society in 1946, which was renamed New York City Ballet in 1948, where he served as the company's Ballet Master until his death in 1983. Internationally acknowledged as one of the pre-eminent authorities on the ballets of George Balanchine, Joysanne Sidimus has staged his works for dance companies and schools the world over, including the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Deutsche Oper Am Rhein, Stuttgart Ballet, Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, Teatro alla Scala, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Beijing Dance Academy, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet and Canada’s National Ballet School. Born in New York, Joysanne studied under Balanchine at the School of American Ballet and then joined his New York City Ballet. She later performed as a soloist with London’s Festival Ballet and as a Principal Dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet and The National Ballet of Canada. As well as being a Balanchine répétiteur for both the National Ballet and The George Balanchine Trust, she is the founder of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre and founding Vice President of the Artists’ Health Centre, a comprehensive health care facility for artists at Toronto Western Hospital. In 2006, she received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement and in 2003, she was awarded the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Medal.

Born in Miami, Florida, Colleen Neary trained at the School of American Ballet and Harkness House for Ballet Arts. She danced as a Soloist with New York City Ballet under the direction of George Balanchine from 1969 to 1979 and was personally selected by him to stage his ballets for other companies for The George Balanchine Trust. As a Répétiteur, Colleen remains in demand, continuing to stage Balanchine ballets for major US and international ballet companies. Colleen was Rehearsal Director and Choreographic Assistant at Zürich Ballet from 1979 to 1984 and a Principal Guest Artist and company teacher for Maurice Bejart's Ballet Du Deuxieme Siecle from 1984 to 1986. Colleen joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as Principal Dancer in 1986. From 1992 to 2002, she was Rehearsal Director, Company Teacher and First Instructor at The Royal Danish Ballet. In 2004, Colleen and her husband, Thordal Christensen, co-founded Los Angeles Ballet where they choreographed such classics as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote, leading the company to great success.

Barbara Karinska was born in Russia in 1886. As a young woman, she ran a Moscow embroidery shop before leaving the country after the October Revolution. Before settling in America in 1938, Karinska worked in Paris, making costumes from the sketches of artists such as Christian Berard, André Derain, Salvador Dali, Marc Chagall and Cecil Beaton. After arriving in New York City, Karinska designed many of the tutus and conventional romantic ballet dresses for New York City Ballet. As the company's most respected costume designer, she created the costumes for many of George Balanchine’s works, including Divertimento No. 15, Symphony in C, La Bourée Fantasque, Serenade, La Valse, Star and Stripes, The Nutcracker, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Liebeslieder Walzer, Bugaku and Jewels. Karinska designed and executed costumes for the theatre, opera and cinema and in 1962 was given the Capezio Award in recognition of her contribution to dance. She died in New York City in 1983.

Ronald Bates studied scenic design at Los Angeles City College. He worked as a stage manager for the Mozart Festival and the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut and for the NBC Opera Company in New York. In 1957, Bates accepted an invitation to join the New York City Ballet as production manager. Bates also served as resident lighting designer for New York City Ballet and worked closely with choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. An authority on the construction of permanent and portable stage floors, he developed the "Balanchine basket-weave floor", a surface that helped reduce injuries to dancers. The floor design is in wide use in theatres throughout the US and abroad. Bates also worked with Dance Theater of Harlem, San Francisco Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet and Zurich Ballet. He died in 1986 at the age of 54.

Toronto native, Jeff Logue joined The National Ballet of Canada in 2009 as Lighting Coordinator. For the National Ballet, he has created designs for various ballets, including The Sea Above, The Sky Below, Self and Soul, The Wild Space Between Two Hearts, …black night's bright day…, Unearth, Watershed, Crepuscular, On Solid Ground and Skyward. Before joining the company, Jeff worked at the Shaw Festival for over 14 seasons including six productions as Lighting Designer and more than 30 productions as Associate Lighting Designer. In addition, he worked on I, Claudia, for which he was nominated for both Dora Mavor Moore and Betty Mitchell Awards. Jeff was the Associate Lighting Designer for Urinetown (Canadian Stage) and Assistant Lighting Designer for The Producers (Mirvish Productions) and has worked at most of Canada’s larger regional theatres. He studied theatre production at York University.

Jeff Morris joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1995. Born in Toronto, he studied technical theatre production and administration at Ryerson’s Theatre School. From 1990 to 1995, he was Production Stage Manager for Toronto Dance Theatre. Since joining the National Ballet, Jeff has stage-managed a wide range of the company’s unique classical and contemporary repertoire, including the world premieres of The Four Seasons, Cinderella and An Italian Straw Hat (Kudelka), Emergence and Angels’ Atlas (Pite), Le Petit Prince (Côté) and Frame by Frame (Côté/Lepage). Company premieres include The Seagull, A Streetcar Named Desire, Nijinsky and Anna Karenina (Neumeier), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale (Wheeldon). He is an adjunct faculty member at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, a board member of SMArts, and Festival Co-Director for dance:made in Canada/fait au Canada

Liliane Stilwell joined The National Ballet of Canada in 2015 and has stage managed The Merry Widow, Onegin, Giselle, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio. Previously she served as stage manager for the Canadian Opera Company for 22 years. Highlights include Don Quixote, Barber of Seville, Lucia di Lammermore, La Cenerentola, Otello, Marriage of Figaro, Götterdämmerung (complete Ring Cycle), Macbeth, La Bohème, Eugene Onegin, Madama Butterfly and was part of the team that took Oedipus Rex to the Edinburgh International Festival. Liliane was production stage manager for Grease and stage manager for Robin Hood and Cinderella at the Elgin Theatre, Dirty Dancing at the Royal Alexandra Theatre and Hairspray at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Other credits include Tom Jones, Speed-The-Plow, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Big River, Carousel, Me and My Girl and Roar of the Greasepaint – Smell of the Crowd. Liliane has stage managed several industrial shows in Canada and the US.

The National Ballet Orchestra

The National Ballet of Canada is privileged to have its own full Orchestra with over 60 members. The Orchestra has performed in each of the National Ballet’s seasons and is led by Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin. The company’s first Music Director was George Crum who, along with Founder Celia Franca, was a pioneer of the company. Crum held the position from the company’s inception in 1951 to 1984, when he was appointed Music Director Emeritus. The Orchestra was led by Ermanno Florio from 1985 to 1990. Ormsby Wilkins was Music Director and Principal Conductor from 1990 to 2006. The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra has toured extensively with the company through Canada, the US and Europe. Over the years, the Orchestra has received much acclaim from audiences and critics alike and has recorded two CDs of Michael Torke’s compositions for The Contract (The Pied Piper) and An Italian Straw Hat. The Orchestra made their concert debut at Koerner Hall on April 3, 2012, in celebration of the company’s 60th anniversary.

Make the Extraordinary Possible NEW PRODUCTIONS

Such was the case last year – the dancers were working directly with choreographer Wayne McGregor in the studio as he created the steps and brought his vision for MADDADDAM to life. When he first read Max Richter’s score, Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin immediately knew it was going to be spectacular. The production teams building sets and costumes, led by Barney Bayliss and Stacey Dimitropoulos, were busy right to opening night. And our Communications, Fundraising, Finance and Human Resources teams were all deeply involved to ensure the ballet’s success.

There are always risks when creating a new production, but when I saw MADDADDAM, I recognized the enormity of the choreographic vision, the power of its storytelling, the commitment of the dancers, the beautiful music and the innovative, multi-media stagecraft. It was a moving, absorbing and ground-breaking work that challenged and inspired our audience.

In the current season, Hope Muir, the Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director, is introducing several new voices to the National Ballet: Alonzo King (The Collective Agreement) this past fall, and in this programme, the first work by David Dawson to enter our repertoire (Anima Animus) and a world premiere by Rena Butler.

Philanthropy has always been critical for fuelling the creative growth of the National Ballet. New works are the capital investment – “creative capital” – that provides long-lasting benefits to the company as these original ballets become staples in the repertoire and propel us on the word stage.

ON TOUR: NEW YORK CITY US PREMIERE OF ANGELS’ ATLAS

The National Ballet of Canada is proud to return to New York City with the US premiere of the critically acclaimed Angels’ Atlas by Crystal Pite. The programme, which also includes Anima Animus by David Dawson and Concerto by Kenneth MacMillan, runs for 4 performances, March 30 – April 1.

“I am thrilled to be bringing The National Ballet of Canada dancers and orchestra back to New York. After three years away from the international stage, we are all excited to return to City Center with these three acclaimed works. The repertoire showcases our accomplished and versatile artists and I look forward to sharing this distinctive programme with New York audiences.”
