Welcome to

A Streetcar Named Desire by Hope Muir Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director It’s a pleasure to welcome you back to the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. I made my official start as Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director on January 1 and it has been incredibly fulfilling to begin working with the dancers at last. They are coming into these performances with such optimism and drive, elated to be sharing their artistry with you. John Neumeier’s A Streetcar Named Desire is a powerful ballet to return with – dramatic and intellectual with complex characters, a varied score and choreography that layers contemporary elements within strong classical technique. John is a highly respected international choreographer with whom the National Ballet has had a longstanding relationship and his work provides significant artistic challenge and satisfaction. With Streetcar we are also celebrating Sonia Rodriguez, who is retiring as Principal Dancer after 32 years with the company. She will dance the lead role of Blanche DuBois in selected performances. Sonia is one the National Ballet’s most illustrious artists and this role certainly demonstrates the depth of her talent. It’s an honour to be part of this important moment in Sonia’s career and we wish her much happiness and success for the future. Thank you so much for joining us,

The land we are performing on today has been home to dance and storytelling traditions of Indigenous people since time immemorial. As we celebrate the return of our beloved art form, we recognize that colonialism and intergenerational trauma has silenced Indigenous artists for far too long. With this in mind, we encourage you to experience and support the work of the many extraordinary Indigenous dance artists working in Canada today. Celebrating Sonia Rodriguez

The National Ballet of Canada is proud to celebrate Principal Dancer Sonia Rodriguez as she gives her farewell performances as Blanche DuBois in John Neumeier’s A Streetcar Named Desire. Sonia is one of the finest artists in the history of the National Ballet. In her 32 years with the company, she has performed nearly every role in the classical repertoire and shared powerful performances in a range of dynamic contemporary work. Creative, fearless and versatile, she has also been a treasured collaborator on new productions, creating unforgettable roles such as the title role in James Kudelka’s Cinderella. One of the great pleasures of watching Sonia perform is feeling the openness and joy she brings to every performance and witnessing the seamlessness of her artistry and technique. Her inimitable presence on the National Ballet stage will be deeply missed. Thank you, Sonia, for 32 years of excellence and inspiration in dance. A Psychological Portrait: A Streetcar Named Desire by Caroline Dickie

John Neumeier, the long serving Director and Chief Choreographer of Hamburg Ballet, created his powerful adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play in 1983. It is one of three full-length ballets by Neumeier in The National Ballet of Canada's repertoire inspired by works of literature, the others being The Seagull and Anna Karenina. Characteristic of Neumeier is his preference for using literature as a point of departure for greater exploration, often of emotion or psychology, rather than something to reproduce identically. With A Streetcar Named Desire, Neumeier emphasizes inner lives and stories above chronology or plot. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the ballet’s opening scene, when the curtain rises to show Blanche DuBois staring blankly

at the audience from her bed in an asylum – traditionally, the end of Williams’ play. Without music, movement or context, this scene is suspended in time and it becomes a reference point or touchstone for the rest of the ballet. Watching Blanche watching us, we understand that she is at the centre of this story and everything will be refracted through her tenuous point of view. About this reverse chronology, Neumeier has said: “It is impossible to dance ‘the past.’ In ballet the past must become visible present, which is why I start where the play ends and allow Blanche once again to show us her journey, through memories and madness, to the end of her own line.”

Blanche DuBois is one of the great characters of 20th century literature, a fading relic of the Old South who skitters between loneliness, need, manipulation and delusion as she struggles to contend with a significant change in fortune, as embodied in the loss of her family plantation, Belle Reve. Bereft of the financial and social capital of Belle Reve and suffering the effects of her husband’s suicide, Blanche retreats to an apartment in urban New Orleans to live with her sister Stella, prompting a culture clash that precipitates her demise.

Stella’s husband, Stanley Kowalski, personifies the primal energy of Blanche’s new environment – gritty, physical and threatening. The large bed that dominates Stella’s apartment is an ominous sign of the sexual threat that Stanley poses as he becomes increasingly agitated by Blanche’s posturing and clinging to notions of old money elegance. Stanley’s simmering propensity for violence culminates with him raping Blanche on the same bed from a design perspective that appears in the asylum, reinforcing the devastating link in her trauma.

14

The ballet’s score is also a powerful register of Blanche’s psychology. Act I features Sergei Prokofiev’s impressionistic Visions Fugitives, which provides a dreamy and melancholic soundscape for Blanche’s memories of Belle Reve. By Act II, when Blanche arrives in New Orleans, the music shifts to ragtime, jazz and Alfred Schnittke’s discordant Symphony No. 1, which mirrors the fragmentation or breakdown in Blanche’s state of mind.

The result is a totality of experience that makes Streetcar an absorbing, atmospheric and deliberately troubling work. For Neumeier, Blanche’s complexities and contradictions are not obstacles to overcome, but opportunities to create layers of meaning and intent, and are very much the heart of the story.
