A YEAR LIKE NO OTHER

4

The 2020/21 season is the first in the history of The National Ballet of Canada to have been presented almost entirely offstage, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The global health crisis created extraordinary challenges for our organization and the performing arts industry, forcing us to shift a business model based on in-person gathering to virtual platforms in a matter of weeks. We are grateful to have faced this reality together, with the full support of our donors and audiences, and to have blazed a path forward with hope, ingenuity and an abundance of patience. Thanks to your generosity and hundreds of gifts to the Together for Ballet campaign, we were able to be confident and resilient in the face of uncertainty, to stay true to our values and our people and, above all, to make art. You helped keep our dancers and musicians fully employed and engaged with a virtual season that had more than 1.1 million views, and to stay connected with young people in their time of isolation and change through innovative digital programming. We also advanced our important work around Equity, Diversity and Inclusion to make ballet and our company more welcoming to all. This report shows what is possible when passionate, committed individuals work together toward a common goal – a creative and beautiful season of music and dance. While our hearts still break for the opportunities we could not realize, we are so proud of what the National Ballet family has accomplished. Thank you for seeing us through. In Gratitude,

Karen Kain, C.C.

TOGETHER FOR BALLET

The Together for Ballet campaign launched in November 2020 to support and protect the artists of The National Ballet of Canada financially through a vastly diminished season. Ongoing health and safety measures associated with COVID-19 necessitated the closure of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts for more than a year and allowed only intermittent access to our rehearsal studios at The Walter Carsen Centre, preventing us from training, creating and performing as planned and decimating our box office revenue.

Donors raised $2,699,877 through Together for Ballet to help us weather this storm. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to: »

Sustain the employment of 62 dancers, 12 Apprentices and 66 musicians.

»

Expand the RBC Apprentice Programme.

»

Acquire new digital technology to capture and distribute our work.

»

Implement health and safety protocols at The Walter Carsen Centre.

»

Maintain the Dancer Health and Wellness Programme.

»

Commission new work.

»

Launch our first digital season.

»

Share The Nutcracker across Canada in partnership with Cineplex.

»

Adapt our community engagement programmes for the virtual space.

»

Support our local dance community through Sharing the Stage.

»

COMING TOGETHER

The 2020/21 season occasioned a powerful coming together on the part of our audiences and donors to support the company, its artists and activities through a year of incredible challenge and uncertainty. This commitment revealed itself in high engagement with our digital performances and events, sustained or increased donations to our annual giving programmes, a strong response to our Together for Ballet campaign and an influx of new donors to the company.

2020/21 VIRTUAL SEASON

Thanks to the generosity of donors and audience members, The National Ballet of Canada was able to curate an innovative virtual season of dance featuring three world premieres and the introduction of two new choreographic voices to the company, Jera Wolfe and Kevin A. Ormsby. With this virtual programming, we stayed connected with audiences, expanded our reach internationally and engaged our artists with meaningful opportunities to create and perform.

Expansive Dances is made possible by the generous support of The Delaney Family Foundation and Sans Limites. The National Ballet of Canada presents Expansive Dances in partnership with Evergreen. Lake Maligne and In Between filmed at Evergreen Brick Works. Supported by Bank of America as part of Evergreen’s 2020 Cultural Performing Arts Series.

Ballet lovers throughout Canada enjoyed a special presentation of James Kudelka’s The Nutcracker in partnership with Cineplex. Previously captured live at the Four Seasons for the Performing Arts, the production was available to stream online through the Cineplex Store and shown at select Cineplex theatres unaffected by lockdown measures. The National Ballet was proud to offer 1,600 families free access to the streamed performance through our Share the Magic programme.

The Nutcracker is made possible by generous financial support from production underwriters Sandra Pitblado & Jim Pitblado, C.M., Lawrence & Ann Heisey and an anonymous friend of the National Ballet. Share the Magic is sponsored by Sun Life and generously underwritten by Ada Slaight.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

The COVID-19 pandemic was the catalyst for accelerated growth and innovation in the digital space as we pivoted to offer high quality performances, events and community engagement opportunities to a wide audience online. On February 18, 2021, the Department of Canadian Heritage announced a joint funding arrangement with the Canadian Opera Company to install new digital infrastructure at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, The Walter Carsen Centre for The National Ballet of Canada and the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre in Toronto. This initiative is helping both companies capture and distribute professional calibre work for audiences worldwide, improving accessibility and extending our reach indefinitely.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

Upgrading our rehearsal and performance spaces with enhanced technology is an extension of Digital Reach, a three-year project that asks how cultural organizations can use technology to reach a wider audience. Digital Reach is a joint project with the Canadian Opera Company and Screen Industries Research and Training Centre (SIRT) at Sheridan College.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The National Ballet of Canada is proud to have maintained an inspiring community engagement programme online in 2020/21 thanks to the full and generous participation of our donors, artists, community partners and colleagues in the dance profession. We reached young people and their families in homes, classrooms and hospitals with virtual visits, movement workshops and other digital content designed to bring people together.

Sharing the Stage Sharing the Stage launched in 2020 to support local dance artists and engage audiences at home. The programme invites members of Toronto’s vibrant dance community to livestream or share a pre-recorded dance class on the National Ballet’s digital platforms in a wide range of movement vocabularies, from Flamenco and Improv to Powwow Fusion and Hip Hop.

CELEBRATING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR KAREN KAIN

On June 30, 2021, Karen Kain stepped down from her role as Artistic Director after more than 50 years as a world-class dancer and visionary with The National Ballet of Canada. Karen graciously extended her tenure to see the company through the most challenging time in its history, the COVID-19 pandemic, and stewarded a virtual season that reflects the high standards of excellence for which she is known. Karen will continue to serve the National Ballet in her new capacity as Artistic Director Emerita. As of June 30, 2021, donors have raised $3,988,541 for The Karen Kain Legacy Fund in The National Ballet of Canada, Endowment Foundation to help future artistic directors strike the same balance of innovation and fiscal stability that defined Karen’s leadership style.

MESSAGE

The National Ballet of Canada enters the third fiscal period impacted by COVID-19 in a secure financial position, ready to weather the significant challenges of recovery ahead. The past year saw the cancellation of our entire live onstage season, touring schedule and in-person community engagement events, including the postponement of several important new productions and acquisitions. This resulted in a drop of an estimated $13.8 million in revenue from 2018/19 levels. The company quickly shifted its focus to innovating digitally to connect, inspire and delight while diligently reducing costs wherever possible. The response to this challenge from our artists, staff and supporters was unprecedented. Dancers, musicians and wardrobe, production and administrative staff accepted compensation reductions, making personal sacrifices to help preserve as many jobs as possible. We are deeply grateful to our loyal donors, subscribers and ticket buyers who stood by us throughout the year by renewing their annual membership and programme support, donating back their subscriptions and tickets, and making additional gifts to our Together for Ballet Campaign. The generous support of the entire ballet family, along with cost savings, proceeds from a performance interruption insurance policy and critical government funding through the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy and the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy made it possible for the company to deliver a surplus of $2 million for the 2020/21 season. Full recovery from COVID-19 will be a multi-year effort. Expenses must ramp back up to launch the upcoming exciting season and development of delayed productions and acquisitions has already begun. The surplus generated in 2020/21 will be used to cover the loss reported in 2019/20 and an anticipated shortfall in 2021/22 due to uncertainty of box office revenue and a return to the expenses required to bring the beauty of live ballet back to audiences.

The National Ballet of Canada has prepared these summary financial statements to be included as part of the annual report. The criteria applied by management in preparation of these summary financial statements are as follows: a. the information in the summary financial statements is in agreement with the related information in the audited financial statements; b. a summary statement of cash flows, and notes to the financial statements have not been presented, as the relevant information can be obtained from the audited financial statements; and c. the summary financial statements contain the information necessary to avoid distorting or obscuring matters disclosed in the related audited financial statements, included notes thereto. Audited financial statements are available on The National Ballet of Canada official website.

Note 2

On July 1, 2020, the Company early adopted the amendments to Section 3462 Employee future benefits (“Section 3462”), which are applicable to not-for-profit organizations. In accordance with Section 3462, the cumulative effects of applying the amendments are recorded in opening fund balances at the date the amendments are first applied which for the Company is, July 1, 2020. The impact on the financial statements as a result of the early adoption on the new standard was to decrease the defined benefit obligation asset and to decrease net assets at July 1, 2020 by $835. Additional information on the change can be found in the full notes to the financial statements.

Note 3

Since January 1, 2020, the spread of COVID-19 has severely impacted many local economies around the globe. Measures taken to contain the spread of the virus, including travel bans, quarantines, social distancing, and closures of non-essential services have triggered significant disruptions to organizations worldwide. The Company’s primary concern is the health and safety of its artists, staff, patrons and community as the company monitors the COVID-19 situation. As a result of Public Health orders, The National Ballet of Canada announced the cancellation of all its normally scheduled live performances for the entire 2020/21 season as well as all in-person public dance classes for the year. The impact on the statement of operations includes the elimination of substantially all box office and touring revenue. The impact on the statement of financial position includes the continued deferral of all funds raised for the delayed new production of Swan Lake and the Anniversary Gala, the deferral of costs incurred related to the development of Swan Lake and the deferral of all box office monies collected for cancelled performances that were placed on account. These deferred revenues and expenses will be recognized in a subsequent year when the related performances take place. With vaccination rates increasing, and public gathering restrictions being lifted, the Company plans on presenting a full season for the upcoming 2021/22 season. There is no impact to the Company’s financial position and results of operations as of and for the year ended June 30, 2021 other than the immediate financial implications of the cancellation of the above productions and events.
