A

big part of keeping a healthy garden is balancing the bugs. As the weather warms the increased bug activity in our gardens becomes more apparent. The holes in the cole crops are the first indicator of aphids. Never fear, though, in the balanced garden ladybugs are on their way. Soon after the ladybugs, parasitic wasps will appear on the fennel and all is well as they lay their eggs in caterpillars and aphids…and the cycle continues. Vegetable plants that are allowed to flower and turn into the ugly stages will support a host of good bugs and even butterflies. Consider letting parsley, broccoli, fennel and cilantro to continue through the flowering stages to support the predatory insects and butterflies. Praying Mantis are the ultimate predators, as they eat all bugs, all day

and all night. They eat the aphids, flies and caterpillars, but mantids don’t stop there, they will also eat the bees and butterflies and beneficial bugs. Mantids commonly disappear as soon as there are no longer bugs to eat, because they will eat each other. Ultimately, categorizing garden bugs as good and bad is just a perspective. In a certain sense, a garden needs some of the bad bugs in order to keep enough good ones around and active when needed. A healthy garden is all about balance. Parkway Partners offers free educational programs on the second Saturday of the month. May 10th at 10 a.m., Zack Lemann of Audubon Insectarium will speak on beneficial bugs in the garden.
