Mid-City Music on the Bayou

T

he annual Bayou Boogaloo, along the lovely breezy banks of Bayou St. John in Mid-City, takes place beginning Friday May 16 and runs through Sunday, May 18. Big Freedia, Eric Lindell, plus Rosie Ledet & The Zydeco Playboys are a few of the artists who will be headlining the music schedule this year. Positive Vibrations Foundation is the presenting sponsor for the second year. The foundation’s mission is to develop and preserve the arts, music, culture and heritage. Entertainment will be offered again from three stages while favorite local food vendors will provide a diverse selection of foods. Attendees can also shop the Boogaloo Art Market. The event is designed as a family affair with a kids stage, games and activities. Proceeds will enable MotherShip Foundation, the event’s host, to continue to replant trees along Bayou St. John, many of which were lost during hurricanes Katrina and Isaac. For the full schedule of music and special auxiliary events visit TheBayouBoogaloo.com.

Cover artist Helena Rose’s creations portray the power and beauty of nature and the female form. A student of astrology, tarot reading and numerology, Rose depicts a magical place where the tangible and ethereal meet through her art. “I am endlessly inspired by the world around me—vibrant, saturated colors; overly intense light; fluid forms; and jagged textures,” says Rose. “The luminosity of life, humanity and the cosmos often leaves me speechless.” Rose uses a wide array of materials in her creations, including pastels, colored pencils, clay and wood. She also creates wearable art, such as handbags made from salvaged leather and jewelry made from sea glass, meteorites, gemstones and other natural materials. The cover image, Passionate Pursuit, is part of a series of “collage to canvas” acrylic paintings. “I had been making collages for years and one day decided to try using those fun little pieces as sketches for my more serious painted works,” comments Rose. Born, raised and home-schooled in rural Washington state, Rose is a selftaught artist who makes her art and home in Thousand Oaks, California.
