THE KITCHEN GARDEN

Q

uickly snipping chives for a potato or the basil for caprese right from the back door is one of life’s earthly pleasures. An herb garden can also be structured to yield year-round, incorporating woody plantings such as rosemary or annuals such as broccoli and lettuce and a trellis for beans. It is now a kitchen garden. A kitchen garden can become a French potager if put into the geometrical configurations that make it ornamental.Be sure to include flowers into the mix to attract bees for pollination. The goal is year-round visual appeal as well as production for the kitchen. Square foot gardening techniques work well for a kitchen garden. Pick up a design on the internet. For a successful kitchen garden start with good soil and solid organic amendments. After the first planting, side dressing with compost during the seasons is all that may be needed as there will be little upheaval required after that. Full compost is the best resource, but some leaves and cotton seed meal may add to the organic content. By the third year a four to five percent organic content should be achieved or the soil will be exhausted and the yield will decrease. Learn more at the Parkway Partners “Kitchen Garden” workshop presented by Piedad Scanlan on Saturday, April 12 at 10 a.m. The program is free of charge. Fruit trees, vegetable. herb starts and pollinator flowering shrubs will be for sale at the greenhouse at 1137 Baronne St., New Orleans, 70113. Phone: 504-620-2224.
