he construction of the long-awaited Lafitte Greenway, overseen by the City’s Department of Public Works, will be completed by Durr Heavy Construction, LLC. Durr Heavy Construction submitted the lowest of five bids ranging from $5.5 million to $7.9 million to construct a 2.4 mile linear park and bike path to be built from Mid-City to Treme. The City of New Orleans held a public meeting with Durr Heavy Construction to communicate important information about how the construction will take place and to allow for public input and questions. Funding for the construction comes from a Community Development Block Grant that allows for the construction of a 12-foot wide asphalt bike path from Basin Street to North Alexander Street through currently vacant city-owned land. The plan includes lighting, new trees and native plants, softball/baseball backstops, soccer goals, a walking path, bike racks and rain gardens. The construction is expected to take one year. The Lafitte Greenway is the latest incarnation of one of New Orleans’ most historic transportation corridors. Once a portage between Bayou St. John and the Mississippi River, the strip was then converted to a canal and eventually filled in and turned into a railway. Now the land will be a linear park where locals can cycle, walk and play. The Greenway is a 3.1-mile-long strip of land bounded by Basin Street, Lafitte Street, N. Jefferson Davis Parkway, and St. Louis Street. The Lafitte Corridor consists of the Lafitte Greenway and the surrounding neighborhoods located within approximately a quarter mile. Friends of Lafitte Corridor is a member-driven nonprofit organization, founded in 2006, devoted to revitalizing Lafitte Corridor by working to build, program, and promote the Lafitte Greenway as a great public space.
