One of the primary attractions of granny flats is their potential to generate rental income or accommodate family members. As of September 2022, the rules changed to allow property owners to rent out secondary dwellings, such as granny flats, to non-household members.
According to the Queensland Government’s Residential Tenancies Authority, “the property owner must obtain all relevant approvals before renting the secondary dwelling, including
development/building and council approvals. Owners must also ensure the rental complies with smoke alarm requirements and all other health and safety regulations. Depending on the setup of the property, a secondary dwelling may be rented out as either a:
• General tenancy agreement, if the secondary dwelling is let out as a self-contained unit and the tenant/resident has no access to the main house.
• Rooming accommodation agreement, if the tenant/

Chances are, a granny flat will have many uses over the duration of its life, housing different guests and having different purposes. If you do decide to go down the concrete path, it is recommended to invest in a professional cleaner who can correctly seal the tiles. This will help with ease of cleaning down the track, as well as

Because of the natural material, the tiles can be inconsistent in size, which can make installation harder. So, if you prefer a perfectly symmetrical look, concrete floor tiles might not be the best way to go. They will also cost more than other tile varieties.

Dulux colour forecasters are predicting a move towards an eclectic mix of mid-tone hues this autumn.
Inspired by the Journey palette – one of three palettes that feature in the 2024 Dulux Colour Forecast – this look takes influence from our travels, folk traditions and cultural differences.
Colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr says maximalist and patternheavy, Journey combines bold mid-tone colours with cooler shades.
“The palette evokes a sense of security and comfort in the home making it ideal for autumn, and is influenced further through the layering of
textures and objects with rich ancestral heritage.”
The palette highlights lush green colours inspired by nature (Dulux Xena and Bean Counter) with muted blues (Swedish Blue and Clouded Sky) that help to make a space feel larger and tranquil.
Elsewhere, muted neutral pinks, including Lilac Light and Evening Blush, work seamlessly to create a cohesive look.
When it comes to using these colours in your home, stylist Bree Leech provides inspiration with her latest project. Adding depth and meaning through colour, furnishing and objects, Bree transformed a master bedroom, hallway, living room and
secondary living space.
In the master bedroom, Bree added depth through the use of greyed-off blue and layers of mid-tone shades, including Dulux’s Antique White USA.
Carmen, a rich berry shade, features within the floor-length
curtains and decorative artwork to add contrast and interest, without overpowering the room.

Transform your yard or garden into a functional space by constructing a wall made from interlocking bricks.
Aretaining wall is an ideal way to take a sloping piece of land and turn it into a level space.
They are the perfect way to create entertaining areas, garden beds or even some flat space for the kids’ trampoline.
There are a variety of materials you can use to build the structure. Choose from timber, brick or even large rocks.
For the purpose of this DIY project, we have chosen interlocking bricks.
1. The first step is to measure out the area and calculate how many blocks you will need to purchase.
2. Mark the place you are going to construct the wall by running a string between two stakes. This will be a good guide for you as you build the structure. Dig a trench in the earth that is about 18cm deep and 35cm wide.
3. Fill the trench with sand and compact it using a shovel. Make sure it is level. Lay the first row of blocks. This first row must be level as it will set the shape for the entire wall. You can check
this by using a spirit level.
4. Drainage is important so make sure to use drainage product, like gravel, about 15 to 20cm behind the first row of blocks. Fill the openings in the top of the blocks and between each one.
5. You may need to cut a partial block to complete the first row. If not, you will need to cut one to start the second row. Use a masonry saw to cut the blocks. Follow all safety instructions.
6. When you have finished the first two rows, add drainage. Lay slotted pipe on the gravel behind the blocks. The key is to allow groundwater to escape to a clear area.
7. Repeat laying the blocks and drainage. Take time to compact backfill for each block height and apply an adhesive, such as Selleys Liquid Nails Landscape, to the final row of blocks. Add topper stones for a clean look.
8. Backfill behind the wall with gravel and soil, taking care to tamper down each layer. Finish with a layer of topsoil.
Before building a retainer wall, be sure to check the local government rules and regulations.
