From the editor

hen it comes to recycling, thankfully we have come a long way since I was growing up in the 1980s. Children these days are taught from early on in school the importance of reducing, recycling and reusing. In fact, I was called out a few times by my children when they were younger if a plastic container made its way into the wrong bin - and rightly so. We are fortunate that the Sunshine Coast is at the forefront when it comes to waste management, with plans to eliminate landfill entirely by 2041. In this week’s edition, Councillor Maria Suarez shares how the Sunshine Coast Council plans to reach their ambitious goal. Also in this week’s edition, we launch our Adopt a Family Christmas appeal (turn to page 12 for all the details). We would love your help to bring a smile to the faces of families doing it tough this year. Let’s make a difference as a community for those among us who need it most.

AGENDA

CALL TO SHARE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS MORE WIDELY THIS YEAR The Adopt a Family campaign aims to ensure those in need have gifts this festive season. And it needs the community to help spread the love. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.

M

ore than 122,000 Australians are homeless, including 1205 people on the Sunshine Coast. It’s a sobering statistic, particularly as we head into the Christmas period when there is even more financial pressure on families who are already doing it tough. It’s also a timely reminder that not everyone will be surrounded by love and celebrations during what is meant to be

the most magical time of the year, with many local families facing added uncertainly and hardship. There is no doubt it’s an expensive time of year for everyone, especially this year, with the increasing cost of living and relentless interest rate rises we have experienced over the past few months. In fact, new research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates the cost of living for working Australians

has skyrocketed by a staggering nine per cent in the last year. But, while many of us are feeling the pinch, the sad reality is that some Sunshine Coast families are now unable to afford daily meals, let alone even think about a special Christmas spread or gifts for their loved ones. It is truly heartbreaking to think that hundreds of local children could spend Christmas with an empty stomach and

without a present to open. The spirit of giving is never more vital than this time of year and there are countless families who can benefit from our support. As a community we have the power to bring hope and joy to those who are struggling. This year, My Weekly Preview is thrilled to launch our Adopt a Family campaign. With your generosity, this campaign offers us a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable families. It’s as simple as choosing a family from the lists of one (or more) of our participating charity groups and buying a gift for each family member (turn to page 12 for our special feature and easy-tofollow guide on how to donate). It’s also a great opportunity to teach children the value of giving rather than receiving at this time of year. Perhaps each member of your family could purchase a gift for someone in your adopted family to make it even more affordable. It’s an opportunity to embody the true spirit of Christmas by extending our love and support to those who are suffering. Together we can help to bring a smile to the faces of families in need and show the incredible positive impact we can have collectively as a community. Every act of kindness creates a ripple effect of joy and positivity. By participating in the Adopt a Family campaign you have the power to create positive memories this Christmas for families who need it most. Let’s make this Christmas a time of unity, compassion, empathy and unwavering support for our community. We thank you for being a beacon of hope for those in need.

FAST FACTS

Penguin proposal

Do you remember?

Did you know? It’s an evolutionary mystery that scientists have had trouble explaining, but humans are the only animals who enjoy eating spicy food. There does not seem to be any health benefits to eating painful peppers (though some research finds that it may fight off fungus), so the best reason suggested is the thrill factor—no different than liking rollercoasters or scary movies.

Not only do penguins mate for life, but they also have a ritual to mark the occasion. But since they can’t get down on one knee, male Gentoo penguins “propose” by hunting down the smoothest, roundest pebble to present to their potential mates. If the female penguin accepts his offer, she adds the pebble to her nest and the two will soon breed. So important are these pebbles that male penguins have been known to fight over the most perfect ones.

Luckily these fiddly ports have since been replaced with USB-A and hopefully soon, USB-C. But at least they were colour coded.

FEATURE STORY

CONJURING A FUTURE WITHOUT LANDFILL Sunshine Coast Council has a plan for all rubbish to be reused by 2041. WORDS: Michelle Larkin.

W

ho remembers rubbish tip days when you’d back up the trailer, then shovel everything into one big pit? These days there are areas for scrap metal, electronics, clothing, batteries and many more – with even a separate place to dump x-ray films. But imagine a future without landfill at all. The Sunshine Coast Council has plans to ensure that by 2041, rubbish is reused, rather than dumped or buried. Eliminating landfill forms part of the Sunshine Coast Resource Recovery Strategy 2023, adopted in November, as part of waste-management plans for the future. Councillor Maria Suarez (who manages the Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Portfolio) says the Council’s plan will “view waste as a resource”, and help them reach their goal of zero-net emissions by 2041. “It sets a clear path to harness the value of these resources – for example by collecting food waste and converting it

10 My Weekly Preview | December 7, 2023

10.indd 1

into compost and recovered plastics that can be repurposed into clothing or park benches,” Cr Suarez says. She also explains that it will support a ‘circular economy’, where waste products, such as plastic bottles and steel cans, are turned into something new, then used again – creating a ‘circle’ of use. A new $40m material recovery facility (MRF) in Nambour will support the ‘repurposing revolution’. The MRF will use innovative technology to sort and salvage glass bottles, plastic containers, cardboard, paper, and steel and aluminium cans, allowing materials to be repurposed for use in various industries. “With this strategy, Council will meet Commonwealth and State waste reduction targets and lead the way to a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future,” Cr Suarez says. Besides using your home recycling bin effectively, and organising a green-waste bin from Council, there’s another recycling avenue Coast residents might not be aware of.

“With this strategy, Council will ... lead the way to a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future.” Councillor Maria Suarez

Queenslanders use three billion drink containers each year, and a 2023 UN Report states that Australia has the second-highest consumption rate per capita of bottled water – despite having safe and clean tap-water available. Reports from Clean Up Australia volunteers state that one in 10 items found on Clean Up Australia Day is a drink container, making up nearly 18 per cent of the total rubbish removed. We’ve all seen images of marine life impacted by plastic drink bottles. These non-recycled bottles, unfortunately, often reach the ocean where they break into pieces and are commonly mistaken for food and consumed by animals like turtles – with often-fatal effects. Compounding this issue, these plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles take about 450 years to decompose. So, as well as switching to a stainlesssteel water bottle – and filling it from the tap – how about returning your eligible containers to Containers for Change, myweeklypreview.com.au

4/12/2023 10:39:34 AM

FEATURE STORY Queensland’s container refund scheme? According to Clean Up Australia, the Container Deposit Scheme aims to reduce rubbish becoming landfill or ending up in the environment, and gives old products a second life, building a sustainable, cyclic economy. Individuals can earn a 10 cent refund from most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel, and liquid paperboard drink containers between 150ml and three litres. Since it began in November 2018, Containers for Change has received more than 580 million containers in the Sunshine Coast region alone, providing huge benefits to the community and the environment. Containers for Change spokesman Ben Mulcahy points out that equates to more than $58 million in refunds paid to Sunshine Coast locals. Added to the environmental and financial benefits, Containers for Change creates jobs for vulnerable Queenslanders, and offers users the option of donating their refunds to charity. With more than 4000 eligible charities, including Clean Up Australia, 4 Paws Animal Rescue, Sunshine Coast SES Unit, and Homeless Outreach Sunshine Coast, each person can choose a charity close to their heart. The app Containers for Change QLD is available to help locate refund points, search for charities, access digital refunds, and scan containers to check their eligibility for returning. Users can also keep track of how their efforts are making a difference. Containers for Change refund points aim to be accessible for all Queensland residents, with multiple locations on the Sunshine Coast. If someone lives in Sippy Downs, for example, there are four drop-off centres within 5kms to return bottles for refund. You won’t get rich from recycling at Containers for Change, but you will earn some pocket money, teach kids to recycle, perhaps assist a charity – and contribute to a future without landfill.

Income drawn from empties How to use Containers for Change? 1. Collect eligible containers. 2. Take them to a container refund point.

HOW DID THE SUNSHINE COAST DO THIS PAST YEAR? • The Sunshine Coast community has shown a passion for sustainability and conserving the environment, with more than 362,000 volunteer hours for the Environment Levy’s partnership programs. • $12.5m funding was generated by the Environment Levy’s projects, with the unused funds retained for future land acquisitions to further the Council’s conservation estate. • Environment Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox says Council spent $900,000 on restoring dunes and rocky headlands, which are important places supporting biodiversity and our region’s coastal lifestyle. “Council manages almost 8000ha of land for conservation across our region, and the Environment Levy has contributed the funds to purchase and manage about half

of this estate,” Cr Cox said. • Sunshine Coast residents of diverse ages are lending a hand to the environment, with groups such as Kids in Action supporting young environmentalists. Kids in Action fosters leadership and conscientiousness by increasing awareness and advocacy of local and curriculumrelated topics, including cultural heritage, sustainability, waterways and coastal ecosystems, and threatened species. • Private landholders are also keen to contribute to improve their environment and the greater good, and have planted more than 27,900 native trees through the Land for Wildlife program. • To contribute to the Circular Economy, individuals can buy products with a long life, avoid single-use items, recycle and return products (whenever possible), and buy vintage.

3. Earn a refund or donate. Perhaps loose change refunds don’t interest you, but why not choose a charity and donate, plus donations of $2 or more made via your member number may be tax deductible. What does Containers for Change do with your empty containers? • Once you return your empties to a refund point, the operator counts the containers and sorts them by material type. • A logistics provider will then collect the sorted material from the refund point and deliver it to processing facilities where it’s baled and weighed. • The materials are sold through an online auction portal to a panel of accredited recyclers each week. • Many containers come back as new drink containers. Scheme material can also become road base, bicycles, prosthetics and more.

SECOND SLEEPBUS READY Volunteers are needed to help deliver safe nights to vulnerable Coast women and children. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

fter a two-year campaign, the region’s second sleepbus is ready to provide a safe night’s sleep to some of the Sunshine Coast’s most vulnerable residents. The new pink sleepbus will accommodate women and children and joins the Coast’s original sleepbus, which has provided 1026 safe sleeps since its launch in mid-2022. Sleepbus takes out-of-service buses

and converts them into secure overnight accommodation at no cost for people experiencing homelessness. The pink sleepbus launched at Mooloolaba in late November, with it to begin operating on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from this month. The specially fitted-out bus features 10 self-contained lockable sleeping pods, complete with double bunks, clean bedding, TV, charging ports, climate

women experiencing homelessness rose by 10.1 per cent. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare noted that from January 2022 to June 2023, the number of people nationally receiving specialist homelessness services increased by 21.7 per cent in Queensland. Of those people either homeless or at risk of homelessness, 57 per cent are women. Sleepbus CEO Simon Rowe says while both buses are now operational, the service is calling on more volunteers to meet demand and achieve the goal of providing the service daily. “With more hands on deck, the service will be able to operate more days, providing more people with a safe place to sleep,” Mr Rowe said. “It takes about nine people to look after each bus. “There’s a range of ways people can help out and we know people’s lives change, so we don’t ask them to commit to regular shifts or hours.” Roles include bus drivers, caretakers, housekeeping and service volunteers, with training provided. ComfortDelGro Corporation Australia (CDC), has partnered with sleepbus since 2019, donating the buses and providing fuel, mechanical repairs and storage at its local depots throughout the day. The new pink sleepbus is one of five that CDC has donated and CEO Nicholas Yap says the company is proud to support the service. “Sleepbus is the perfect partner for us as we can not only offer our end-of-use vehicles to be converted and extensive facilities around the country to keep the buses clean, fuelled and operational, but most importantly help provide some respite for those experiencing homelessness,” Mr Yap says. “Even if it’s just for a single night, knowing our former buses and our teams are supporting Australians to have a safe and secure place to sleep is important to us as a business.” According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of people experiencing homelessness increased by 5.2 per cent in the five years to 2021 to 122,494. STRENGTH IN NUMBERS A head and neck cancer support group links survivors with patients, raising awareness and funds for those in battle.

T

he simple ability to breathe, eat and speak were taken away in the blink of an eye for a Mooloolaba grandmother as she battled a rare form of cancer. Carol Adams was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2019 and endured a gruelling 36 rounds of radiation before achieving remission in 2020. Her journey planted the seed for a support group dedicated to those grappling with the challenges of head and

neck cancer. The Sunshine Head and Neck Cancer Support Group was established in mid-2021 to offer support, raise awareness and gather resources to better the lives of those navigating a diagnosis. “I have visited every dentist and doctor clinic on the Sunshine Coast to spread awareness through brochures – seeing them displayed brings me incredible joy,” Ms Adams says. “My aim with the support group is to

not only offer support to those affected by head and neck cancer but to reach people before they get to the point of needing treatment.” The group meets for coffee regularly and also fundraises. It has so far raised $34,000, which has provided laser machines, discounted lymphedema massages, care packages and 50 nights of Wishlist accommodation for patients and families. Chris Fletcher, a 35-year throat cancer warrior, and his wife Christine, jumped at the opportunity to be part of the group to share what they have learned throughout their journey. “After nearly 15 years enjoying a carefree life, the big C decided to come back in 2016,” Mr Fletcher says. He had surgery to remove the tumour, however complications after surgery resulted in him losing the ability to eat or drink. Now relying on a PEG tube, he explains the hardships of feeling often misunderstood or judged for needing to bring his own pureed food to public venues. “It doesn’t stop us though: we do what we can, go out when we can,” Ms Fletcher says. “I am a cheap date,” Mr Fletcher adds jokingly.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR COAST COMMUNITY AWARDS Nominations are now open to celebrate individual and group in the community that embody what it means to work and live on the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast Biosphere – Community Awards, formerly the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards, will again honour those who lead the way with an emphasis in 2024 on sustainable values. “The awards celebrate the achievement and contribution of everyday individuals and community organisations and present real community examples of sustainability efforts and action in the community,” Sunshine Coast Council Environment Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez says. “In a domino effect, the stories of each nominee will no doubt inspire others to make positive contributions in the community.” Categories are citizen, young citizen and senior citizen of the year; community group or organisation, creative arts and healthy people awards; healthy planet and biosphere business of the year. Entries close April 30, 2024 at sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ communityawards.

BY THE NUMBERS Across Queensland, more than 24,000 people are employed in community clubs, which return more than $460 million in community contributions and generate $2 billion in annual economic activity.

Dicky Beach Surf lifesavers Mia Warner and Cooper Bessell

A HOMEGROWN SOLUTION A new initiative placing local young lifesavers in hospitality roles is proving to be a big success.

L

ocal surf clubs are finding a solution to staff shortages thanks to a ‘new wave’ of hospitality workers – beach to bistro style. Finding and retaining hospitality staff, particularly over holiday periods, has become a challenge for many

organisations. Fortunately, surf lifesaving supporters’ clubs have found a homegrown solution in the volunteer army sitting between the red and yellow flags on weekends and public holidays. Thanks to the initiative, an increasing

number of patrolling members are now taking up paid jobs in bar, reception, kitchen and wait roles upstairs. Dicky Beach Surf Club General Manager Natalie Bell says the refreshing workforce has been a huge success on many levels. “Finding staff has become such a headache, attracting lifesavers has saved us,” Ms Bell says. “We now have 25 per cent of our team who are patrolling members and they include a number of surf sports competitors like ironmen, surfboat rowers and board and ski paddlers. “They are fit, focussed and loyal and a wonderful face for our club when it comes to the public, who can see the direct connection to lifesaving and what we are all about as a supporters club.” Ms Bell says as well as boosting patronage, the move is also helping young people gain valuable work skills.

“Most are young people and it’s their first working experience so it’s great that this first experience is a very positive one ... they are in an environment that is well known to them. “It’s their club, just a different part of it. Some have been here since nippers.” Mia Warner, 15, who has been with the Dicky Beach Surf Club since she was a nipper and Cooper Bessell, 18, who is an ironman competitor and patrol vicecaptain are among the lifesavers taking up hospitality roles. Alex Surf Club is also a trailblazer in employing members from within the lifesaving ranks. CEO Ashley Robinson, who has driven the club’s growth for 14 years, says the club has 20 lifesavers currently on its books. “It creates a very real experience for customers having active lifesavers on staff,” Mr Robinson says. “For the workers, it’s a supportive one as we understand the need for roster flexibility around training and competition schedules. “It goes without saying they understand teamwork and processes and they are very motivated.” “More clubs are employing lifesavers and as far as I’m concerned it’s a winwin.”

POLICE TO PATROL SHOPS A targeted operation will focus on keeping shoppers and property safe, deter would-be offenders and disrupt anti-social behaviour.

P

olice will be more visible at Sunshine Coast shopping centres during the festive season in an effort to disrupt and deter offending. Officers will undertake extra and extended shifts at shopping centres and other crime hotspots like public parks, skate parks and public transport hubs. Child Protection and Investigation Unit investigators will also target youth offending and anti-social behaviour.

The operation will include targeted patrols in consultation with shopping centre management and security, shop owners and staff. Regional operations and youth crime deputy commissioner Shane Chelepy says it is one of many proactive initiatives police have planned to keep the community safe. “We know around the holidays that families, tourists and young people on school break all head to shopping centres

and it is a priority for QPS to help ensure everyone can enjoy the experience safely,” he says. “We want the public to know police will be out and about in a highvisibility capacity doing all they can to disrupt the minority who seek to commit crime.” Sunshine Coast District’s Detective Inspector Christopher Toohey says patrols will also focus on deterring would-be car thieves. “The car parks are also a priority for our high-visibility patrols, and we ask shoppers to work with us to keep your property safe while you shop,” he says. “We ask you to please lock your car and take your car keys with you, and ensure any valuables or shopping bags you leave in your vehicle are out of sight.” A state-wide blitz targeting drink drivers kicked off last weekend across highways and road networks. Police will conduct Operation Victor Mistletoe until January 25, targeting motorists speeding, drink and drug driving, driving distracted or not wearing a seatbelt. “We urge all road users heading out to celebrations or travelling on road trips to plan ahead and don’t take risks,” Police Minister Mark Ryan says. “The message is simple: if you are planning on drinking – do not plan to drive.”

GIVE THE JOY OF READING TO COAST CHILDREN IN NEED Passionate readers are being invited to support a heart-warming initiative that creates a positive new chapter in the lives of children in need. Sunshine Coast Council Libraries is reaching out to the community to help spread the joy of reading this Christmas through the Books4Kids appeal. Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor David Law says the campaign has been running since 2000 and has helped many families. “This wonderful initiative has made it possible for thousands of children across the region to unwrap the magic of books during the holiday season, with more than 12,000 books distributed to children in need to date,” Cr Law says. Local libraries will be accepting donations of new children’s or young adult fiction and non-fiction books until December 13.

Buderim Lions Christmas cakes

COMMUNITY NOTES Double Island Point beach clean up finds shocking volume of rubbish Double Island Point is considerably cleaner thanks to the efforts of Crick’s staff, customers and the wider community. The first Cricks Beach Clean-up saw an incredible 3281 items of rubbish retrieved from the beach in just over an hour, equating to more than 350 kilograms collected. Of the rubbish, 1490 items were hard plastics and 501 were soft plastics. High volumes of bottle caps, plastic bottles and rope were also collected. “I have been running beach clean-ups on the Sunshine Coast for 12 years and know that the best way to change someone’s habits about their consumption is to show it to them directly, and you can’t ignore a huge pile of trash against a picturesque background,” Crick’s marketing manager Jessica Abraham says. “We had many staff and customers attend who shared that

they were really shocked and confronted by the amount of rubbish, and we need that shock value to help instil a permanent change of behaviour.” Crick’s will run its next beach clean-up at Double Island Point for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 3.

For many of the children in our care, Christmas highlights all that they do not have and amplifies the mess, the noise and the chaos. While many of us will sit down comfortably to a delicious Christmas meal in a loving and safe environment, these children will face conflict and sadness. With your donation we’ll make sure these children receive Christmas presents and Christmas food, but we’ll also ensure that they are supported the day after Christmas and d the year ahead.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Cr Winston Johnston Division Five

Shady solutions Division 5 skaters, riders, scooters and bladers are keeping cool as the temperatures rise, with shade sails installed at the local Palmwoods skate park. There’s been no shortage of kick-flips, airs, rail hugging and grinds since nine large sails were installed at a popular skate park at the foothills of the Blackall Range. It’s fantastic to see the works completed. They also included upgrading the car park from gravel to bitumen and installing a drinking fountain. I hope new cooler shade will create a social hub for our youth and broader community to enjoy. This project was made possible with funding support split 50:50 between Council and Heritage Palmwoods Community Branch.

Dark Sky Reserve

STORMS

After conversations with community members and initial investigations, I’m pleased to see Council proposing a Dark

Sky Reserve encompassing 873 square kilometres in the Mary River Catchment. We recognise close to 15,000 members of our community call this area home, including those in Maleny, Mapleton, Montville, Witta, Flaxton and Conondale. A dark night sky with plenty of visible stars has benefits for community wellbeing, retaining character of our hinterland areas, and promoting astro-tourism for hinterland businesses. It’s also important to our native wildlife that need to move, feed or reproduce safely at night. You can find out more about the proposal on Council’s website. We’ll be asking for residents’ views on the proposal in 2024, so stay tuned.

TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

Venus is visiting your relationship zone which favours romance, friendships and socialising with work colleagues. Then Mercury starts reversing through your adventure zones, so any weekend trips or longer holidays should be planned carefully.

Tuesday night’s new moon heralds the rebirth of an important relationship. But remember, Mercury turns retrograde on Wednesday, so financial partnerships, tax matters and deep, dark secrets must be handled with care.

It’s a wonderful week to start a new diet or rejig your fitness routine, as Mars and the new moon activate your health-andwellbeing zone. Then Mercury starts reversing through your relationship zone, so do your best to surround yourself with people.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)

VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)

LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)

SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)

Tuesday night’s new moon is all about children, friends and creativity. On Wednesday, Mercury starts reversing through your wellbeing zone. So it’s a suitable week to revise your diet and fitness routine, as you choose healthier food options.

The new moon sets the stage for a fresh start involving your home, a family member or a domestic project. But do you have unrealistic expectations about a close relationship? This week Mercury starts reversing through your romance/friendship zone.

The week starts well with a positive connection between Mercury and your power planet Venus. So Monday and Tuesday are fabulous days to circulate and socialise. But – from Wednesday onwards – tread carefully with a fragile family member.

Expect some hiccups as Mercury starts reversing through your communication, education and travel zones on Wednesday. If you slow down, think before you speak, and double-check your itinerary and appointments, then you’ll manage fine.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)

PISCES (FEB 19 - MAR 20)

This week you’re ready to sparkle, shine, flirt and have fun, as amorous Mars and the fiery new moon light up your sign. It’s time to shake off the shackles of other people’s expectations and, instead, be the authentically real you.

On Wednesday, Mercury starts reversing through your sign. Mercury is the planet of clear thinking, communication, travel, media and the internet. So – when it’s in retrograde – it’s not a good time to sign contracts, start a job or embark on a holiday.

Are you feeling confused? Have you been questioning your goals? Or does it seem as if you’ve got the worries of the world on your shoulders? Take a step back and view things from a wider perspective. Doing good deeds will leave you with a warm glow.

This week – with a new moon and Mercury turning retrograde – it’s time to do anything with a ‘re’ in front of it: revise, rehearse, review, remember, return, recover, reconnect. Especially in areas involving career, colleagues, peer group, hopes, goals and dreams.

MY OPINION

SOCIAL NEEDS TRUMP PRIVACY

LIES, TRUTH AND THEIR DELIVERY

Jane Stephens observes strangers incidentally and accidentally telling the world their most personal information - and loves it.

Ashley Robinson muses about his family’s intergenerational ability to pull off a fib and finds the trick is all in the detail.

I

t is astounding how much people reveal about themselves: it is as if all eyes are on focused on digital privacy and vigilance has been forgotten where people live and breathe. People talk intimately to their lovers on speaker as they walk down the street. They give their best contact number to the inquiring customer service attendee at their shop of choice – in clear earshot of all around. The stop-go sign holder has his full name in fat, permanent pen on his sun-safe hat. Sit next to a stranger on a plane or on a bus and you are presented with material enough for many novels and Netflix series. On a recent flight, I sat next to a man who was on his way to a high-level meeting in Sydney from Vanuatu. I know this because he texted his contact before we took off and scrolled back through their exchange several times during the flight, all while tilting his phone directly towards me. It would have been rude not to look. I know his full name, because his printed boarding pass stuck above the seat pocket for the entirety of the trip. I know his date of birth and other essentials

because he inspected his passport, helpfully opened to the picture page, in forensic detail. His phone home screen displayed his beaming wife and child. He was not alone: the lanyard worn by a man on my train recently blared his and his company’s names and included a mugshot that revealed he had worked for the firm for several years. I could tell you his taste in music and that he was going to be a bit delayed for dinner – because he shared these things indirectly. It is also astonishing what people will say when you offer them a chance. Make eye contact, be polite and inquiring, and off they go, with mouths motoring and hearts on sleeves. I find it delightful, interesting and heartening. A journalist by name and nature, I have always found that people are bursting to talk if the door is cracked. I love that. Aristotle first declared that humans are social animals, born with the innate capacity to form social connections: we like each other. Humans need social and emotional connections for learning and higher-order cognition: we need each other. Privacy fears be damned.

Dr Jane Stephens is a UniSC journalism lecturer, media commentator and writer.

T

hey say if you are going to tell a lie, you have to own it, and most politicians would probably agree. I mention this in the context of having the grandkids after school, which is our usual Monday thing. When they went home Old Mate casually asked me, “Did you know they have got a pool at their place?” I inquired whether it was an above ground one but was told the kids had told her it was concrete with a glass fence and when she asked how deep it is, she was told that it was about Dad’s height (182cm). I struggled with this information and pointed out that concrete pools don’t just pop up, and if this one had, I wanted to know who built it. Old Mate was pretty adamant that the kids had answered every part of the interrogation like they had a pool and it was all a bit much for me, so I went over to their house to have a look. Their father was stunned when I asked him. I then got the six-year-old out and asked her where the pool was and she just laughed and took off. It turned out they are looking after their neighbour’s pool, which explained the detail.

I am not much good at telling porkies, and if I do Old Mate can see right through them so there is no point. But I do have a confession to make: way back when I was about the grandkids’ age I went missing in sideshow alley at the Nambour Show, where I stuffed my face with fairy floss before my Mum found me. When she asked me where I had been, I told here I had got a job leading ponies around an enclosure which was happening but not by me. Like my grandkids, I was very good on the detail. My Mum believed me and I never had the heart to tell her that I was actually gutsing myself on sugar not leading ponies. She would bring it up randomly over the next four decades, “Remember the time you led the ponies,” and I would respond with a sheepish grin. Apart from feeling bad for 40 years, I did pay another price for lying: about five years after the lie I was riding our horse Gypsy and it shied, then bolted under an orange tree. I came out the other end looking like I had a fight with Freddy Krueger. I never rode another horse and the lesson in it made me about as truthful as any male can be.

MY OPINION

SUMMER’S ALL FUN AND GAMES Sami Muirhead relishes the chance for her family to immerse themselves in a new version of Monopoly, featuring the landmarks of Noosa .

Y

ou know you have made it to the big time when they make a Monopoly board in your honour. The latest board game offering is Noosa Monopoly, and it features our own backyard and all its landmarks just in time for us to spend hours of Summer playing against our family members. My sister was ruthless when we played Monopoly as kids. Is it a coincidence she is still sensible with money all these decades later while I seem to be forever relying on that cash injection to get me out of tight spots? I love this new iconic board game focusing on Noosa, but the makers have made one mistake. The silver tokens are the traditional playing pieces. So, you move around the board with the tiny thimble, dog, wheelbarrow, a boat and a boot. It begs the question what would be the perfect silver pieces to truly represent our unique region? A surfer on a longboard or maybe a pandanus tree. How about some tokens on the fun side? Budgie Smugglers or some white linen pants, maybe a red token that

represents a Sunburned Victorian or perhaps little statue of the man who sells slushies on Hastings Street beach. Monopoly was launched in 1935 and has been tearing families apart ever since. I love the classic Monopoly with all the famous landmarks of London and all those streets we know thanks to playing the game as a kid including Bond Street, Park Lane and Mayfair. There are now more than 300 versions of the game including Friends, Pokemon, Game of Thrones and even the Brisbane Broncos. A list just came out with the most popular board games in Australia. Uno, Trouble, and Hungry Hungry Hippos made the top ten. This makes me happy. Childhood classics like Jenga, Operation and Connect 4 are also on the list. Some things just never change, do they? This silly season, my family will be putting the screens away for at least a few hours and sitting around the table playing Monopoly. Just don’t tell my sister. Okay, she’s not invited!

EYES WIDE OPEN ON SUMMER SAFETY

A

s the summer sun beckons people outdoors, it’s essential to prioritise eye safety to safeguard against potential hazards. The sun emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can pose risks to eye health, including your eyelids. Prolonged exposure to UV rays may contribute to various eye conditions, including

cataracts plus eye and lid cancers. Therefore, adopting protective measures becomes crucial during the summer months. Investing in quality sunglasses with UV protection is a primary defence against the sun’s harmful rays. Look for sunglasses that block 100 per cent of UVA and UVB rays to ensure comprehensive

eye protection. Additionally, choose sunglasses with larger frames or wraparound styles to minimize peripheral exposure to sunlight. Outdoor activities often expose your eyes to additional risks. Whether swimming, playing sports, or engaging in recreational activities, consider protective eyewear designed for the specific activity.

Goggles with UV protection are ideal for swimming, shielding the eyes from chlorine and the sun’s glare. Similarly, sports enthusiasts should prioritise safety goggles to prevent injuries from flying objects or impacts. If you’re gardening remember to take care and wear protective eyewear especially if using a blower, mower or whipper-snipper. The sun’s intensity is strongest between 10am and 4pm, so try to schedule outdoor activities outside of these peak hours whenever possible. Remember the Australian Cancer Council’s five forms of sun protection message: • Slip on sun-protective clothing • Slop on sunscreen (avoid getting this in your eyes) • Slap on a hat • Seek shade • Slide on sunglasses Best Practice Eyecare recommends incorporating these practices into your summer routines. You can enjoy the sunshine while safeguarding your eyes from potential harm. Prioritising eye safety ensures not only a more enjoyable summer but also contributes to long-term eye health and well-being. bestpracticeeyecare.com.au

HEALTH & WELLBEING FEATURE

SIMPLE STEPS CAN HELP IMPROVE GUT HEALTH Bloating, pain and gas – most of us have or will experience these uncomfortable symptoms at some stage. In fact, gut health naturopath Danielle Elliott says they are her clients’ three top complaints. Here Danielle shares five top tips for optimal gut health: 1. Mindful meals: Digestion actually begins in the brain and not the mouth or stomach as most of us would think. Some ways to eat mindfully are: taking some deep breaths beforehand, eating at a table, eating without technology as a distraction, chewing well and tasting all the flavours. 2. Digestive support: Digesting your food fully reduces symptoms throughout the digestive tract. Over time, our body can produce fewer digestive enzymes with some of the reasons including stress, eating when rushed, age, dehydration and medications like acid suppressants. 3. Probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics: Specific strains of probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics have been studied and proven to reduce bloating, gas production, inflammation, functional abdominal pain and can support the normal function of the gut. The new Meluka Australia Gut Nutrition powders are an easy way to get your daily dose of

BE KIND TO YOUR KNEES

all three in the one go. 4. Consider constipation: Constipation is a cause of gas and bloating and natural therapies offer many ways of dealing with this. You want to use supportive and restorative measures and not rely on over-the-counter laxatives that can actually make your bowel lazy. 5. Calm your nerves: We want to be in a ‘rest and digest’ state when eating. Spending too much time in this state can reduce digestive capacity, change the forward movement of the gut, have negative effects on the microbiome and increase the production of inflammatory chemicals. Gentle movement, yoga, deep breathing, gardening and meditation are great ways to support your nervous system to ‘rest & digest’ more often.

You’ll miss them when they’re gone: Sage advice given in Baz Luhrmann’s hit 1998 single Everybody’s free (to wear sunscreen). It is a myth that running, playing sport and “hammering your body” causes your joints to wear out. A healthy, active lifestyle is the best way to maintain healthy joints throughout life. Unfortunately, during sports and activity the ligaments and menisci of the knee can be injured. We are not indestructible. Prevention is better than cure, and these injuries are best prevented by proper training and warm-up. Training must focus on correct and controlled movement to build muscle strength, endurance and co-ordination. Warm-up exercises harness this preparation, stimulate blood flow, and re-engage accurate movement prior to sports and exercise. A good example is the FIFA 11+ and similar programs with other sports to reduce the incidence of tears of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). If this ligament is torn the stability of the knee is reduced and further damage to the knee can result. The long-term effect of such damage is the development of posttraumatic osteoarthritis with resultant pain and loss of function. Different knee injuries in different

people require different treatments. Younger people with tears to their ACL and menisci often require surgery, but this may not be required in older individuals. Some ligament injuries do well with bracing and conscientious physiotherapy. Different people have differing demands of their knees and capabilities. Obtaining the best results for any one individual requires individualised assessment and treatment plans. But everyone should wear sunscreen. Dr Hamish Gray is at Sunshine Coast Joint Surgery. range of skin cancer services under one roof. “We started SunLife as a place where patients come first. It is a place patients can trust to find doctors dedicated to skin cancer care, with training, experience, and access to our amazing facilities.” Says Joyce Hardy, Director at SunLife. “The team at SunLife have been continually improving our systems and

services all year. We provide everything from routine skin checks to sun damaged skin treatments, excisions, and advanced skin cancer imaging.” Amongst their successes this year, SunLife have installed the most advanced skin cancer imaging system, VECTRA 3D Total Body Photography. “Our passion for early melanoma detection and helping people monitor their skin led us to invest in 3D TBP.” Says Dr Simon Hardy “It is an amazing tool, for people with higher risk, such as those with many moles, personal or family history of melanoma. This imaging provides an accurate way of seeing and assessing change.” One result of their efforts was to attract a new, experienced skin cancer doctor to the Sunshine Coast. Dr Bronnie Hautala moved up from a skin cancer clinic in NSW and has been a hit with her patients. The best part is, being new to the area, Dr Bronnie has capacity to take on more new patients. That doesn’t happen often on the Sunshine Coast! SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre is on Wises Road. Information and bookings available at sunlifeskincancercare.com. au or call 07 5450 9808. LOCAL MUM’S HEALTHY SNACKS GO NATIONAL A Sunshine Coast mum so alarmed by high sugar, chemicals and mystery fillers in kids snacks that she created her own healthy range, will soon be selling it through 900 Woolworths stores around Australia. Laura Allan created Isaac’s Snacks in her kitchen, using healthy ingredients like dates, apricots, figs, cinnamon, coconut and oats, and with no refined sugar, no dairy, no cheap fillers, and no mystery numbered chemicals. “I was really looking for more realfood snacks for my young son, and I just felt that a lot of the things in the supermarkets, were loaded with sugar – some bars marketed as healthy are up to 50 per cent sugar,” Laura says. “It just was really puzzling why there weren’t more snacks out there that were just really clean and simple.” In response, she created Isaac’s Snacks, initially just home-baked for her son’s lunchbox, and then scaled quickly when sales of the snacks took off. Laura says it’s been a long-held career dream to sell through a major supermarket chain that shares her commitment to healthy foods. For more details go to isaacssnacks.com

THE SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS Christmas is upon us! For those grappling with hearing loss navigating this time of year can be a challenge. Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of the Christmas season despite hearing impairments. Acknowledging Signs and Seeking Support: If signs of hearing loss emerge, consulting a hearing clinic is crucial. Early recognition puts you in charge. Openly communicating your condition to family and friends fosters a supportive environment. Enhancing Communication: Simple adjustments in communication can make a world of difference. Politely request that people face you, speak clearly, and if needed, repeat or rephrase their words. Non-Verbal Awareness: Beyond spoken words, pay attention to facial expressions and gestures for contextual cues. Express your needs if you’re struggling to comprehend, reinforcing the importance of mutual understanding in conversations. Everyone wins. Strategic Listening Environments: Choose conversation locations wisely during festive gatherings. Position yourself to minimize background noise and consider quieter spaces when needed. Strategic environments

Busting myths: sleep apnea and CPAP therapy truths We spend a third of our lives in bed. This is where our bodies are designed to regenerate and heal. However, millions of Australians may be affected by a hidden sleep disorder that can harm our sleep quality and our bodies’ ability to fulfil this function. Sleep apnea often shows up as snoring, daytime fatigue or a grumpy bed partner. Found to increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia, sleep apnea often goes untreated. Here’s some of the myths that hold people back from a better quality sleep: Myth 1: It’s not sexy. Fact: A poll of grumpy bed partners revealed that using a quiet cpap setup in the dark is sexier than an all night symphony of chainsaws. Myth 2: CPAP machines are bulky. Truth: Modern devices are small, quiet and can offer instant results, which can be life-changing. Myth 3: Treatment is complex. Reality: treatment can be complex if you try and do it by yourself, the CPAP Direct crew are experts in optimising therapy settings and configuration to be simple and easy. Quality sleep isn’t a luxury: it’s vital. With 20+ stores and online support, CPAP Direct aids your sleep apnea journey. Explore what is available at cpap.com.au or call 1300 133 298.

ORTHOPAEDIC

Bursitis help doesn’t have to be surgery Hip bursitis is the popular term for the common condition trochanteric pain syndrome (TPS). This condition causes pain in the lateral (outside) part of the upper thigh, just over the bony prominence called the trochanter, which is part of the femur (thigh bone). TPS typically affects females over the age of 40 and can be quite debilitating. A bursa is a fluid-filled sac which allows soft tissues to glide over bony prominences. You have them all over your body around your joints. Although the trochanteric bursa can become inflamed in TPS, the primary problem is degeneration of some of the powerful tendons around the hip joint, particularly gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. Management of TPS is almost always non-surgical, although it can be quite a frustrating condition for patients who suffer with it and for clinicians treating it. Often patients will be referred for a steroid injection into the bursa, which may provide some temporary relief, but typically doesn’t address the underlying problem. Management for this problem includes physiotherapy and platelet-rich plasma injections into the degenerative gluteal tendons.

REAL ESTATE IN HER VEINS Specialist revels in matching people to property.

G

ail Hunter has worked in real estate in Queensland since moving from Victoria in 1992. Her passion is matching people with property and her genuine interest in people and her love of life on the Sunshine Coast shines through. For the first eight years, Gail worked in property management, caring for large residential and holiday property portfolios on the Sunshine Coast, eventually overseeing more than 1000 properties over three offices and supervising 12 staff. She was awarded REIQ Property Manager of the Year for Queensland and later for the Sunshine Coast, was Chairperson of the REIQ Property Management Chapter and a trainer and workplace assessor for the industry. Since 2000, Gail has enjoyed off-theplan project marketing for major developers such as Juniper, Lend Lease and Reed Property Group, among others. Between 2019 and 2022 she was contracted to Walter Iezzi Property Group, successfully recording more than $110,000,000 in sales.

Her desire is to continue to look afterr the real estate interests of the many clients and friends she has dealt with over the years. McGill Property Group was the perfect fit for her to facilitate the general real estate side of her business. Gail is on the Foundation Board of UniSC and is a Fellow of the REIQ. She also supports many charities on the Sunshine Coast. Outside of real estate, Gail enjoys spending quality time with her family including her six precious grandchildren. gail@themcgillgroup.com.au

Homes with larger blocks of land are becoming harder to find, but the flat 650m2 block on which this home sits gives you plenty of space to enjoy all of the benefits of being able to put a pool in with ease, have a big shed for your toys or work vehicle, and have room left over for a game of cricket. SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

So, Hawaii scored a Black Friday macking swell of 60ft-plus at Jaws out of nowhere. Kai Lenny casually states he might try a few new tricks on a 60ft wave ... oh, by the way, that is 80ft Australian. So, what does he do? Upside down 360s as he is dropping into monster waves. Worth a look on YouTube. Snap! Back here ... nothing but dreams.
