From the editor

I

was lucky enough to attend the Sunshine Coast Business Awards recently and what a night it was. Almost 900 business owners, sponsors and supporters filled the room to capacity at the Sunshine Coast Convention Centre, Twin Waters, to celebrate our incredible business community. It never fails to amaze me how many entrepreneurial people call the Sunshine Coast home, and the business awards are testament to that. It was wonderful to see these outstanding businesses recognised for their contribution to the community. This week, I caught up with the winners of the Business of the Year award: Adam and Robyn Cheshire, of Amaze World. This humble pair were genuinely surprised by the win, and so thankful to those who have helped them on their journey. Read their story on page 14. From the team at My Weekly Preview, congratulations to all the nominees and winners. What a great achievement! Until next week.

AGENDA

Top tips to save on your grocery bill: Plan your meals Browse through cookbooks or online to figure out what you want to cook for the week ahead, then make a list of ingredients so you don’t get overwhelmed and distracted at the supermarket. You can even check the prices of ingredients at the supermarket online before you go. Whatever you do, don’t shop when you’re hungry. You are more likely to splurge on snacks and lollies that can quickly add up. Use unit pricing to compare prices Unit pricing is a labelling system that allows you to make more informed purchasing decisions. By looking at the cost per unit of measurement, you can easily compare prices between different brands and package sizes and identify the best value for your money.

LOYALTY CAN BE REWARDING FOR SHOPPERS Research reveals supermarket rewards points are helping Aussies save during the cost of living crisis, but buying smarter is the key.

S

upermarket rewards points are helping millions of Aussies to unlock cheaper groceries, new research by Finder, Australia’s most-visited comparison site, has found. A Finder survey of 1096 respondents revealed more than half (58 per cent) of Australians – equivalent to 11 million people – are using their grocery rewards points to shave money off their grocery bill. The research shows 83 per cent of Australians are part of a supermarket

rewards program in 2023, with Everyday Rewards and Flybuys dominating the category. The average Aussie household is spending $187 per week on groceries in November, data from Finder’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker reveals. Finder personal finance expert Amy Bradney-George says supermarket loyalty programs could be valuable if shoppers jumped through the required hoops. “Shopping for groceries is

Buy frozen food in bulk Buying frozen fruits and vegetables is often cheaper than buying them from the produce section and they are a great way to bulk out your meals. Foods such as peas, corn and berries are frozen while they’re fresh, so you won’t miss out on valuable nutrients and flavour. Bulk meals such as soups, curries and pasta are a cheap and tasty way to use frozen vegies.

demanding a growing chunk of the weekly budget, so consumers may as well enjoy some perks or extra savings,” she says. “As the price of food and household goods continues to spike, shoppers are being much more intentional with looking for ways to keep their grocery

bills down. With Woolworths Everyday Rewards and Coles Flybuys, you’ll typically earn one point for each $1 spent at the supermarket – and can redeem 2000 points for $10 off your shop.” Ms Bradney-George says that based on Finder’s analysis, you could save around $10 on your groceries every few months through a supermarket rewards program. “Keep an eye out for exclusive promotions run by the loyalty programs, too – you can earn tens-of-thousands of extra points that way,” she says. “But it’s important to remember that Aldi and some other supermarkets can offer an affordable alternative without a rewards program. “And choosing low prices might end up being cheaper overall.” Finder’s research shows one-in-eight shoppers (13 per cent) convert their supermarket rewards points into airline points – saving money on future flights. Almost one-in-10 Aussies (nine per cent) use their rewards points to buy gift cards through the loyalty programs, while six per cent don’t use their rewards points at all, letting them go to waste. Ms Bradney-George says loyalty programs generate profit for the supermarket. “These schemes keep customers coming back and give brands more access to marketing research data,” she says. “But as a shopper, you can still use them to get something back on what you spend. Stick to a shopping list so you aren’t wasting money on unplanned purchases, stock up on staples when there are point promotions and compare prices of big-ticket items before handing over your hard-earned cash.”

Do you remember?

Did you know?

People used to say “prunes” instead of “cheese” when getting their pictures taken. In the 1840s, a cheesy grin was seen as childish, so a London photographer told people to say “prunes” to keep their mouths tight. Now you know why people never smiled in old photos.

The Clapper, a once-popular household gadget, now stands as a nostalgic relic of the past. Introduced in the 1980s, this innovative device allowed users to control lights and appliances with a simple clap. However, its novelty faded as technology advanced, offering more sophisticated and convenient smart home solutions. The Clapper remains a charming reminder of a bygone era when the idea of controlling your environment with a mere clap seemed like cutting-edge technology.

Today in history – November 23 Queen Elizabeth II had a stand-in to make sure the sun wouldn’t get in her eyes. Ella Slack was a similar height to the late Queen, so she would rehearse big events beforehand to make sure everything would be comfortable for the monarch. However, she wasn’t allowed to sit on the throne, so she had to squat above it.

1910 – The last person is executed in Sweden. Johan Alfred Ander was convicted of murdering Victoria Hellsten during a robbery of a currency exchange. He was the only person in Swedish history to be executed using a guillotine. Capital punishment in the country was abolished for all peacetime crimes in 1921 and for all crimes in 1973.

1963 – TV show Doctor Who debuts. The longest-running science fiction TV show first aired with an episode called An Unearthly Child on the British Broadcasting Channel. The show, which has had 11 actors playing the lead role, follows the adventures of Doctor Who, who uses the Time and Relative Dimension in Space (TARDIS) to traverse time and space. 1976 – The first person dives to 100 metres deep without breathing equipment. D

irector Gretchen Keelty’s job is to mould pure joy into the annual Sculpture On The Edge festival. As 12 months’ work hurtles towards the start of the 2023 event on Thursday, November 23, Gretchen must ensure the 18-day festival – covering the sculpture competition and exhibition, public workshops and ticketed events, artist talks and twice-daily tours – is joyous for all. “The thing that brings me so much joy is seeing the delight on people’s faces and the wonder,” she says as the 2023 Sculpture On The Edge (SOTE) prepares to welcome art lovers for the second year to the renowned Flaxton Gardens wedding and events venue on the Blackall Range. Maleny Garden Club’s Open Gardens Festival gave SOTE wings as a collaborative effort in 2010, before the standalone event began the following year. Arts Connect Inc. co-founder Pam Maegdefrau was the driving force. “All of it began because she believed there weren’t enough opportunities for emerging artists, and SOTE because there were not enough opportunities for sculptors in particular,” Gretchen says. “So, she took action. She’s wonderful. Still very active and still a great supporter of Arts Connect local artists.”

10 My Weekly Preview | November 23, 2023

10.indd 1

SOTE director Gretchen Keelty The vision has since grown into what is the Sunshine Coast hinterland’s signature indoor/outdoor visual art festival. The much-anticipated event on the regional arts calendar allows guests to meet and interact with the clever artists and discover their diverse works throughout an almost magical setting where initial glances can be deceiving, nothing is quite as it seems and you never know what to expect. Whether high up in the trees, dominating grassed areas or standing beside leafy gardens, on the floor of the auditorium or hanging from the ceiling, the

smallest of works to massive constructions form an eclectic mix of original ideas in mediums that range from traditional bronze, brass, marble and clay to recycled articles, hardwood, papier mache and textiles. The big picture is a sensory feast to drink in, walk around, marvel at and be charmed by. And the works never fail to get people talking. “The most surprising for me, and a bit amusing, was Cat Men by Jason Sank: it won the People’s Choice in 2021,” Gretchen says, laughing at the memory of one statue’s “anatomy swinging in the breeze”. “Someone posted it on Twitter and I heard it had something like 35,000 likes.” A SOTE social media post at the time reported: “This intriguing, whimsical, and somewhat disturbing piece responds to the destructive history of the feral cat in Australia whilst cleverly referencing a futuristic trans-human existence. Made from wire mesh, felt, and real cat fur, this work was certainly in the consideration of the judges, so we are very pleased to see Jason rewarded by the popular vote.” The competition side of the festival this year boasts 120 finalists and 190 final works vying for Overall Winner ($10,000, sponsored by Flaxton Gardens), Emerging Artist ($1000, Montville Art Gallery

and Bodo Muche Studio), Local Artist ($2000, Illume Creations), Reclaimed and Recycled Art ($2000, doubled in size this year, The Opalcutter), People’s Choice ($1000, Montville Chamber of Commerce and Hammond Optometry) and Artist Choice Peer Award ($1000, new this year, Tina Cooper Glass Gallery). Some sculptors have had two or three works accepted after all entries were scrutinised by an Arts Connect Inc. curation panel, as well as a blind judging. “We’ve got pieces from the United Kingdom, Paris, Spain and the whole eastern seaboard – Tasmania, Victoria , NSW and all over Queensland – and the Northern Territory,” says Gretchen, who had her hands full with her baby this year but had three pieces accepted in the 2022 SOTE. “We still have a good representation of local artists but we have this extra added flavour. (Works) range from figurative to abstract. “We’ve got some really great Indigenous artists as well. Belynda Waugh has a brilliant outdoor installation as well as an indoor work. BJ Murphy has an indoor work. And Colleen Lavender has some special pieces as well. Then there’s cross-cultural Indigenous collaborations. “It’s all really, really special.” myweeklypreview.com.au

FEATURE STORY With a tagline of: “Immerse yourself in creativity”, the festival is also highly interactive, including nearly 40 workshops that are sure to draw out the imagination of participants. Choices include making a small figurine in a two-day (9am to noon) workshop with Monte Lupo Arts, sculpting a male portrait in clay with Cam Crossley, and creating a 30cm wax model ready for casting under Lainie Cooper-Taverne’s Wax To Bronze day-long tutorship (9.30am-4pm). Multiple Archibald Prize finalist and one of Australia’s best painting teachers, Sydney-based Jessica Ashton, will give a master class in portraiture, while husband Robert Dujin shares his skills and knowledge in a Plein Air Landscape workshop. Mieke Van Den Berg offers an experimental drawing class on Tracing the Moving Body, and even the kids can get into the act by creating take-home turtle and whale planters, painting their own coffee mugs and making festival paper lanterns, mosaic frames and 3D magpie sculptures. “It’s a real mix,” Gretchen says of the breadth of workshops on offer. “Two different artists are teaching needle felting. Cam Crossley teaches how to sculpt from the live model. There’s a little something for everyone and additional kids workshops on the weekends.” Everything about SOTE 2023 is designed to optimise participation, engagement and inclusion. “Last year, one of the most motivating things for me was seeing this young lady, who was quite immobile, in her fully motorised wheelchair, able to get around Flaxton Gardens and have a wonderful day with her carer,” Gretchen recalls. “That, for me, was so heartwarming – to know that we can provide a wonderful day out for everyone. “We’re trying hard to make it accessible for everyone. “Every time we make something more accessible for one group, it’s more

accessible for others as well. When I was pregnant, I needed to sit down a lot. So, we’re making sure there’s lots of places for people to sit and rest. “The ramps are not only for wheelchairs, they’re for people with prams. “The kids love it just as much as anyone. It’s fantastic. “Last year, my daughter was seven weeks old for the exhibition. “It’s a week or two later this year and I think she’s going to be taking her first proper steps up at Flaxton on the beautiful manicured lawns. “She loves people and I feel like it will be the highlight of her year, too – more people to smile at.” Robert Guenther installing his piece, Connect, at the 2022 exhibition IMAGE: BARRY ALSOP, EYES WIDE OPEN IMAGES

AMONG THE FINALISTS Dean Rusling From where do you get your inspiration and what part do the materials themselves play? From marine life. I love the lines. The bronze allows me to create flowing thin sculptures with very little fixing to a base. How did you begin dabbling in sculptured forms? I asked someone one day to create a piece for me for a client. It was such a hassle to them, I thought, “Stuff it, I’ll have a go at it myself.”

BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN ART Sculpture on the Edge is an annual art extravaganza and sculpture competition at Flaxton Gardens. The 18-day program aims to ignite imagination, inspire and delight with indoor and outdoor works which are all for sale. The festival is made possible by the support of the Sunshine Coast Council, local businesses and cultural grants. The 2023 SOTE is open to the public every day from 8am to 4pm, from Thursday, November 23 – Sunday, December 10. Adult entry is $10, concessions $5, and children 17 and under are free. Learn more at sculptureontheedge.com.au. Purchase tickets for entry at sculptureontheedge.com.au/ tickets/ and workshops at sculptureontheedge.com.au/ art-workshops-sunshine-coast/.

Belynda Waugh (Bindi) From where do you get your inspiration and what part do the materials themselves play? The polycarbonate is a particularly interesting material to work with as it is incredibly flexible UV-resistant and weatherproof. The paint is a graffiti spray paint which is also UV-resistant and weatherproof and, combined, they offer a unique artwork that transforms at night into a pillar of light. How did you begin dabbling in sculptured forms? For me, sculpture is a natural progression from working in two dimensions. There is always that desire to take that next step, see something from another perspective and, of course, explore new materials.

Amanda Stuart From where do you get your inspiration, and what part do the materials themselves play? I create mixed-media sculptures using items from charity shops and collectable fairs, drawing inspiration from the objects and their unique histories. As part of the process, I immerse myself in the materials by living with them in my home – an admission that I’m a bit of a hoarder. When did you see yourself as an artist? I have had a passion for visual art from an early age, and it has been a constant in my life.

Yanni Van Zijl How did you begin dabbling in sculptured forms? Age six. I found clay, toilet rolls, dad’s timber cut-offs – whatever I could find. Materials weren’t supplied, they were found. Then seriously while studying a diploma of fine arts with the intention to study painting. But 3D, ceramics and installation became my chosen art form. When did you see yourself as an artist? Despite always being creative, it wasn’t until my daughter came home one day and, whilst walking past my studio, Sophia announced to her friend, “Oh, that’s my mum’s mess. She’s an artist.” Until then, I had not dared refer to myself as an artist.

NEWS

AMAZING BUSINESS OWNERS LOST FOR WORDS The Business of the Year win caught this humble couple by surprise – and without a prepared speech on the night. WORDS: Ingrid Nelson.

I

t’s been almost two weeks since Adam and Robyn Cheshire’s business Amaze World was announced as Business of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. And the couple is still clearly on a high from the win. Having also won their category (Experiences Tourism – Large) for the second year running, the husband and wife were so surprised to take out the big

gong, they didn’t even have a speech prepared on the evening. “We are still speechless,” Robyn says. “We were really hopeful to win our category. Having won last year, the pressure was a little bit higher. “The competition in our category was also quite high. It certainly wasn’t a given we were going to win. So, we were just so happy to win that.

“The Business of the Year award was a huge surprise and not something we had expected to take out at all. That was just the icing on the cake.” Adam adds: “I felt like a dear in the headlights on the night, I was so surprised.” The couple purchased the business five-and-a-half years ago and invested heavily in the Sunshine Coast attraction to revitalise and develop it into the popular tourist attraction is has become today. “It’s an iconic, 30-year-old business, but it was quite tired and had a bit of a stigma attached to it, to be honest,” Adam says. “It needed a lot of love and a lot of investment to bring it up to speed with modern expectations of a tourist attraction. “We saw it as a huge opportunity. “So, we emptied our piggy banks and managed to buy the place and ever since then, most of the profits have gone back into the business.” Since taking over the business, originally founded in 1993 by the Bellingham family, the couple has opened another six mazes and a whole host of new activities, including new playgrounds and a water-play area. They are renovating their café, just in time for the Christmas school holidays. “It’s a modern, impressive place, where we are all about family fun,” Adam says. “It’s a good, solid half-day out for a family.” Although they are not new to small business, this is the first time the Cheshires have jumped in the deep end and started their own venture. “We have had small businesses here and there, but mainly as a side hustle,” Adam says. “My background is in business

management – from small, family-owned to global conglomerates. That gave me a lot of confidence.” Robyn adds: “He has seen how much he has grown other businesses and the impact it had for them. “It’s nice to do that for your own family. There is a lot of pride in having your own small business and the effort and hard work that goes into it as well.” Adam and Robyn agree the close-knit Sunshine Coast business community has been a pillar of strength and support to them in their business journey so far. “In the tourism industry, in particular, there are a lot of networking events,” Robyn says. “We all have each other’s back. We all help each other. “It’s quite a supportive industry we work in. In fact, the community in general is supportive.” Although the Cheshires admit the submission process for the Sunshine Coast Business Awards is quite a hefty one, they agree it is well worth the effort. “Through the process, it helps you to delve into all different aspects of your business and reflect on the past 12 months, which is quite important,” Robyn says. “When you are in the thick of running your own business, you can lose sight of what you have achieved. “It’s nice to have that time to reflect and put it down on paper.” Needless to say, the two are brimming with pride over the recent achievements and are quick to thank those who have helped them reach their success. “We are very honoured and proud of the efforts of our large team and the people we partner with,” Adam says. “It gives us such a sense of confidence that we are doing something right.”

Looking For A New Mattress? Read This Shocking Admission From A Retired Bedding Franchise General Manager and Avoid Being Ripped Off Retired General Manager of one of Australia’s largest specialty bedding stores recently admitted even if you buy a bed on sale, the margins are still huge. In addition to marking up a mattress by around 300%, the retailer gets another 12% ‘rebate’ from the manufacturer. Mattresses that sell for $10,000 in specialty bedding and department stores are being made for as little as $1,500. Mattresses that sell for $4,000 can be made in China for less than $400. The truth is..

Uninformed Consumes Are Being Ripped Off Most local manufacturers are not helping either. They work with retailers to drive prices up and make it impossible for consumers to compare mattresses. One way they do this is by supplying each retail store with essentially the same mattress, but with different labels (brand names) and prices. On top of that, they refuse to tell you exactly what’s inside the mattress so you don’t actually know what you’re getting. And to further confuse you, they make up fancy terminology to make their components seem better. Local manufacturer, Simply Beds are sick and tired of the deceit in their industry. They’ve been making mattresses in Brisbane for 15 years and sell direct-to-the-public from their 4 companyowned stores. That means you can buy a genuine wholesale prices and save the 300% mark-ups you are forced to pay at other stores. On top of that, they are totally transparent about what’s in their mattresses. And offer the following information to prevent you from being disappointed and ripped off when you buy your next mattress.

What’s In A Mattress?

comfort, longevity and cost. Not all foams are the same quality. Fam is graded by density (or weight) and softness. He higher the density (heavier) the longer the foam will last. Density has nothing to do with softness. You can get high density foam (heavy foam) in soft, medium, and firm. The problem is most retailers won’t tell you the density of the foam in each mattress (most probably don’t even know). Memory or Gel Foam is also sometimes used as a comfort layer. Both foams have slow re-lease qualities which enable them to hug your body and relieve pressure points. But this can make them warmer to sleep on. Gel Foam is injected with a special substance to increase air circulation and keep your mattress cooler. Latex can also be used as a comfort layer. Like foam, not all latex is he same. Genuine latex is highly elastic and will last for many years. Synthetic and hybrid latex becomes brittle over time. The top comfort layer is in the quilting. Beds with a cloud-like feel usually have a lot of polyester in the quilting. While this may be lovely at first, it will quickly flatten (within weeks). To prevent this, we include foam in our quilting.

Pillow Top This is usually an extra layer/s of foam attached to one side of the mattress. While this may add to the comfort of a mattress, depending on the density of the foam, it will contour to your body over time. We use high quality (i.e. high density) foam to minimise this. Pillowtop mattresses are usually single-sided (non flip) which effectively halves their life (although many of our mattresses are still guaranteed for 10 years).

Springs Unless a mattress is made entirely of foam or latex, it will contain a core of springs. These springs are made by a handful of companies (usually in China) and imported into Australia flattened. Bonnel Springs are made from a cylindrical coil of wire attached between guide wires and hoops on the top and bottom. These springs are tried and tested. And they are affordable. But because they are made of continuous wire, they can easily transfer movement across the bed. Pocket Springs are also imported into Australia flattened. They are wrapped individually in cylinders of fabric and work independently of each other which minimises partner disturbance. Pocket Springs are slightly more expensive than Bonnel Springs but well worth it. Side Supports Cheap Bonnel Spring mattress don’t have any side supports. More expensive ones have a single butterfly side support (looks like a full butterfly) so the edge of the bed remains firm when you sit on it. Cheaper Pocket Spring mattresses either have no side supports or use a simple metal hoop at the top and bottom. The best way to give side support is to encase the springs in a high quality density foam box. That’s what we do here at Simply Beds.

Ask about the display mattresses we are selling for even less than our usual low whole-sale prices.

• Retired GM of Bedding Franchise admits mattress margins are ‘HUGE’ (even when they are on sale) • A $4,000 RRP mattress can be manufactured in China for less than $400 • Australian manufacturers supply retailers with almost identical mattresses with different labels so consumers can’t compare prices • Retailers often refuse to tell you exactly what’s inside their mattresses (partly because they’d be embarrassed to reveal the truth, and partly because they don’t know) • Local manufacturer Simply Beds has been making mattresses for 15 years and are up-front about the components in their mattresses • You can save hundreds (sometimes thousands) everyday by getting your mattress from their factory stores • They offer free advice and ordering over the phone on 1300 132 231

Why Choose Simply Beds Unbeatable Wholesale Prices: Overall, our standard prices are around 70% cheaper than other stores because we manufacturer ourselves – right here in Brisbane. Every Mattress I Different: Our cheaper mattresses cost less because they are more basic with Bonnel Springs, no side supports and limited foam. Our more expensive mattresses cost more because they have pocket springs, foam box side supports and include more higher quality foam or latex. But all cost around 70% less than other retailers. Easy to Compare: We’re happy to show you what’s inside each mattress so you know exactly what you’re getting and you can compare mattresses across our range. Genuine Guarantee: While most retailers simply refer you to the manufacturer who may give you the run around and force you to pay for freight to examine the mattress, we stand behind our products. If there is a problem, we will come to your home, inspect your mattress, and make things right straight away.

This refers to the foam/latex layers that sit the springs. This is a major part of the mattress and makes a big difference to the

An artist impression of the connection between Brisbane Road and Nicklin Way as part of the Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade plans

INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT WIPEOUT Politicians, including a Coast Labor member, have criticised the federal government’s decision to axe funding. WORDS: Chris Gilmore.

T

wo planned Sunshine Coast projects have had their funding axed after the federal government revealed the outcome of its infrastructure spending review. The funding cuts are being called a “devastating blow” that could endanger the safety of residents. Infrastructure Minister Catherine King has revealed the federal government will axe $160m for the Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade and $7m for the Nicklin Way-Third Avenue Connection at Caloundra. The announcement is drawing criticism from representatives from all three levels of government on the

Sunshine Coast. LNP State Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson says it is “a shocking and completely unacceptable blow to our growing area”. “News that $160m from the Sunshine Motorway/Nicklin Way upgrade (Mooloolah River Interchange) have been cut by federal Labor has thrown desperately needed safety upgrades into chaos,” she says. “The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest-growing regions in the state and in the country. “The area needs this infrastructure now, not just in the future.” Labor State Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt, speaking in state parliament on November 16, pointed the finger for

IMAGE: TMR

NEWS the cuts at his federal counterparts. “For my federal colleagues to so completely underestimate the needs of the Sunshine Coast and fall into the same trap is absolutely infuriating,” he says. “We want that funding. We deserve that funding. “It is not right and it is not fair, “The MRI is a critical enabling piece of infrastructure to unlock congestion throughout the Sunshine Coast, providing north-south connectivity between Maroochydore and the southern growth areas.” Sunshine Coast News reported in May that more than 130 properties had been acquired to make way for the MRI upgrade. In a statement, the Department of Transport and Main Roads says it is working closely with the federal government on the outcomes of the review to understand the impacts and implications for Queensland projects. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says negotiations with state and federal governments are ongoing and his council’s priority is to get “the very best outcome” for the Coast. “Our council is very concerned that the Australian Government has withdrawn from funding two of the Sunshine Coast’s most vital transport infrastructure projects,” he says. “Both of those projects are aimed at reducing traffic gridlock and helping the Sunshine Coast cope with the growth we’ve got now but also the growth we’re going to continue to see into the future, as well as being necessary to supporting the productivity and functionality of one of the fastest-growing regional economies in Australia. “If that is not consistent with national priorities, then I’m not sure what is.”

Cr Jamieson is expressing his hope that the MRI can still proceed. “I would like to think it’s inevitable that the interchange will have to be built because the state is going to have to step up and fund that,” he says. “We will work with them in terms of our commentary to the federal government about why that’s necessary and why it should continue to be funded. “But ultimately, it’s a state road and the state will need to take care of it because it is a vital access point. It’s got implications around the mass-transit solution as well, and it’s just unsafe. “It was built for a much, much smaller Sunshine Coast and much less traffic than we see today.” Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace is also slamming the infrastructure review outcome. “Clearly they have not been on the dangerous weaving lanes on Mooloolah River Interchange – this section of road has near-misses on a daily basis and is one of the worst intersections in the state, if not the country,” he says. “Furthermore, we are in the middle of a very serious housing crisis. “So, how can both governments explain why hundreds of residents have been displaced and evicted from their homes which were resumed to enable the construction of the Mooloolah River Interchange, when now it appears this project is dead in the water.” But Ms King says that many projects that are being axed lack proper planning, do not have informed costings and are not ready for Commonwealth investment. NEW PONTOON BUOYS THE SPIRITS OF WATER USERS ALIKE Coast guard, fishing and boating enthusiasts are set to benefit from a new public pontoon. The well-used Maloja Pontoon at Tripcony Lane, Caloundra, has been replaced. Coast Guard Caloundra Flotilla Commander QF4 Roger Pearce says the new pontoon and walkways will be safer to negotiate. “We are 100 per cent supportive of the new pontoon as the new design will alleviate many issues that had developed over the past years,” Mr Pearce says. “In the end, the old pontoon became more waterlogged and was no longer fit for purpose.

“Our Coast Guard walkway has also been modified to bridge the two pontoons for easier access.” The upgrade was thanks to Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with the state government and a federal government Fishing Infrastructure Grant. Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg is thanking the Caloundra community for its patience during the reconstruction works. “I’m sure this new Maloja Pontoon will continue to be a popular spot for our community, boaties, water users and fishing enthusiasts well into the future,” Cr Landsberg says.

MANIKIN BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO PARAMEDIC INTERN TRAINING A manikin that will assist paramedic interns with realistic simulations during training has been made possible for the Maroochydore station, thanks to a local ambulance committee (LAC). The Nambour LAC generously donated the baby manikin, which replicates the anatomy of a three-monthold infant. It will give interns the opportunity to practise advanced resuscitation skills, including airway management, professional rescuer cardio pulmonary resuscitation, vascular access and four-lead electrocardiogram monitoring.

“Maroochydore station is so thankful to the Nambour LAC for purchasing and donating this valuable piece of training equipment and we look forward to putting it to great use,” a statement from Officer-in-Charge Casey Horne reads. Nambour LAC president Gary Langford, along with student volunteers, presented the donation to the station. LACs are an arm of the Queensland Ambulance Service, supporting the service in a variety of operational and community roles. Queensland has about 150 active LAC committees and 1600 volunteers.

Bok Beach improvements I am happy to report that the new shower platform at Beach Access 246 is operational and already being used by residents. Sunshine Coast Council has also recently replaced the old beach showers at Beach Accesses 242 and 244. These projects have greatly increased capacity for washing off the salt and sand, just in time for the summer season. While on the subject of Bokarina Beach, the eagerly awaited new basketball half-court is ready for our next generation of Patty Millses or Josh Giddeys.

Coastal Pathway I’m pleased to announce that after a 12-month effort to enhance the signage between Wurtulla and Warana, it’s finally happened. The new Coastal Pathway signage makes the experience more user friendly and it will even tell you where to find the closest toilet facilities. And staying on news about the Coastal Pathway, you may already be aware that the missing link between BA233 (Coonang Crescent) and BA229 (Koorin Drive) will

soon commence. Like me, I know there’s many residents keen to see this stage finished off.

Council delivering November is reporting season at the council. At our statutory meeting on November 16, we endorsed the 2022/23 Annual Report. It gives our community a great opportunity to see how the council is performing and delivering services on your behalf.

Special Constable Sam Smith and Superintendent Craig Hawkins

A SPECIAL ADDITION TO POLICE MANPOWER IN THE REGION The Sunshine Coast’s first Special Constable has been inducted for duty at Nambour Police Station. Earlier this month, District Officer Superintendent Craig Hawkins welcomed Sam Smith into the role. Special Constables are permitted through an amendment to the Police Service Administration Act 1990 and allows the Queensland Police Service (QPS) to offer employment opportunities to retired and former QPS officers. Senior Constable Rebecca McMeniman says Special Constables will perform frontline general policing duties and have full police powers.

“They will bolster frontline capability and be engaged on a demand basis and as operationally required to perform frontline policing duties. “The Sunshine Coast District is lucky to have Special Constable Smith.” In other police news, officers in the Sunshine Coast District Highway Patrol and the Crime Prevention Unit partnered with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to conduct its third and final motorcycle workshop for the year. Attendees had the opportunity to refresh and upgrade their skills and chat all things motorcycles with police and other riders.

PROTECT OUR POLLINATORS Jim Cox has been painting and drawing all his life. His well-loved work features in Les Hall’s 2020 book The Magic of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Rainforest Discovery Centre is thrilled to be hosting a new exhibition of his vibrant art. Cox uses any medium available but prefers acrylic, oil pastel or gouache which allow an immediacy in expressing ideas and observations and produce vibrant colours. His long passion for natural history and art practice often reflects a theme or a place. At times his frivolous titles or rendition hide a serious intent. TAURUS (APR 20 - MAY 20)

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 20)

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 22)

Monday’s full moon is a good time for a brilliant light bulb moment. You have the creative ideas and fiery passion to get an ambitious project off the ground. Now all you need is the patience and persistence to finish it. So slow down and pace yourself.

The full moon urges you to shine a bright spotlight on financial matters and personal values. Do you need to let go of certain people, possessions or attitudes that have passed their use-by date? The weekend stars favour catching up with old friends.

Neptune squares your ruler Mercury on Monday, so you could easily become confused or side tracked by the busyness and minutiae of daily life. The more you concentrate on the needs of others, the better the week will turn out.

You’re keen to daydream the hours away in your cosy Crab cave, as the full moon illuminates your solitude zone. But – as you retreat into your private world – make sure you can differentiate between fact and fantasy, otherwise you’ll end up confused.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)

VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEP 22)

LIBRA (SEP 23 - OCT 22)

SCORPIO (OCT 23 - NOV 21)

This week a long-cherished dream may need to be re-imagined and reworked so that it better suits your current situation. Rather than seeing it as a disappointing setback, clever Cats will perceive it as an exciting new challenge.

Even though you’re run off your feet at work, home is where the heart is as the sun, Mercury and Mars move through your domestic zone. So it’s a good time to tackle DIY projects and communicate with family members in creative ways.

Librans love things to run efficiently and smoothly but (courtesy of the full moon, Neptune and Pluto) there’s unpredictable planetary energy about this week. So drop the perfectly planned schedule and just take things as they come.

Scorpios can have trouble trusting other people at the best of times and, this week, the full moon fires up your trust and intimacy zones. So a confidence could be broken, a loved one could let you down or an old resentment could resurface.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)

PISCES (FEB 19 - MAR 20)

The sun, Mercury and Mars are moving through your sign, which activates your spontaneous side. But avoid overcommitting and promising more than you can deliver. The weekend stars encourage you to tie up loose ends before new ventures.

Monday’s full moon stimulates your wellbeing zone, so jump off the comfy couch and get moving. Nutritious meals are also on the celestial menu, as you take more interest in your health and pride in your appearance. Mercury boosts creativity and concentration too.

Take a good look at your close friends and current peer group. Do they encourage you to be the quirky Aquarian you were born to be? Are they supporting your talents and championing your dreams? The full moon energises your self-expression zone.

This week you could feel confused or discouraged, especially when it comes to a family matter or a professional issue. But escaping into a fantasy world won’t make problems magically disappear. Do your best to banish procrastination.

MY OPINION

THE EVIL WITHIN ONLINE WORLD

CHIPPING IN FOR BARGAINS

Jane Stephens is second guessing every unsolicited email and text message as a potential scamming threat, ready to fleece her of all her life savings.

Ashley Robinson has come to realise from experience that saving money, just like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

A

ustralians lost $3.1 billion to scammers last year. That is a mountain of money and a world of theft. That was 80 per cent up on the year before, and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says these blighters who fleece people are getting harder to spot because they are getting increasingly sophisticated. It can be as simple as responding to a text that your package was unable to be delivered or as complex as ‘lending’ money to someone you thought you had a connection with. The top reported scams are all online. At worst, people lose their hearts, life savings and homes. The problem is so large and so widespread that the ACCC set up a separate entity in July to handle it – the National Anti-Scam Centre – to coordinate government, law enforcement and the private sectors to combat scams. The feeling of being tricked is dreadfully unpleasant. Even if it is over something small, the emotions evoked are broad: dread, foolishness, fear or anger. But while scams use to be Nigerian princes, badly worded emails and ‘spray and pray’ appeals for donations, ChatGPT’s evil cousin

WormGPT is starting to really shake things up, impersonating writing styles, personalising social media posts and even creating videos and images that look so real that they might live and breathe. Imagine if those scammers put their energy into something constructive and used their wily ways for good. All this scamming and makes us wary, and worse – even jaded. This week, I received a text message purporting to be from my insurer RACQ, telling me to respond to the email they had sent to arrange rectification for overcharging my family in years of premiums. I could not find the email and smelt a rat. But that evening, My Beloved said his colleague had mentioned something similar and that it was the real deal – his workmate got $800 back. So I called the insurer, thinking if it was a scam, the call would serve to notify them about it. At best, I might end the call a bit richer. The voice on the other end assured me the rectification was ridgy-didge and that My Beloved and I were owed the tidy sum of just over $600. I thanked him, saying it wasn’t every day that someone tried so hard to give me money. The money has not appeared in our bank account yet, so I don’t yet know if we are victors or victims.

Dr Jane Stephens is a UniSC journalism lecturer, media commentator and writer.

O

xymoron, penthouse to outhouse and back, rocks and diamonds could all describe things that happen in our house under the guidance of Old Mate. Let me explain. Everything we buy at the supermarket must be on special unless it is a necessity. She delights in bringing home the docket with how much she has saved in a shop, and she is obsessed with how it all works. Just the other day, when I got home from work, she had bought some Kettle chips in a new flavour: Bundaberg Ginger Beer. She says to me: “We need to try these as they go off special tonight.” So, I try one and mention it’s pretty good. She tries one, then shoves a whole handful in her mouth, saying how good they are and adds: “Get back up there and buy some more” as I get sprayed with crumbs. When I get back, she tells me we saved $24. Get my drift? Now this doesn’t apply to food for the menagerie, which is a whole other set of rules. Take George the dog, for instance. He gets topside wagyu as it has no fat and is easy for me to cut up – apparently. I get sausages when they are on special; he gets

wagyu when needed and with no price check required. It gets better ... she feeds her birds passionfruit which, at the time of writing. were $2.50 each. No drama – we need 20. Did I mention she is obsessed with Origin Energy’s Spike promo each month where I have to run around and switch everything off for an hour so we can get a bonus on our power bill. She is that vigilant that just the other day, she comes running into the bathroom to tell me I can’t use the hot water before the spike hour as it has to ‘refill’. I inform her it is cold shower, so she relaxes – sort of. I then get told, “If you want me to cook dinner, it will be after 8pm or you can have a salad and a tin of fish.” Geez, she is focused. So, I had a $2 can of fish and lovingly prepared salad, while George hoed down on wagyu. After I recovered from that, I asked her how much we had saved in the last year or so. She scratched her head and said she thought it was about $300. I was just about to say, “I have been sitting in the dark, no TV, cold showers for nearly two years and we only ...!” But then I thought, “Hey, that’s 120 passionfruit. Well done!”

MY OPINION

A MEATY PROBLEM TO DIGEST Sami Muirhead is a convert who reckons turning pastry eating on its head is no pie in the sky concept when it comes to sheer yumminess.

B

ite, blow or take your top off. How do you eat your meat pie? I am a fan of peeling the top off my meat pie, pouring tomato (always) sauce on the meat, loosely plopping the lid back on and going from there. The lid is torn off with your fingers, not by using a knife to cut around the circumference. This is because we are Queenslanders. We are tough. There is a new debate underway on the Coast that is making international headlines. The Kenilworth Coastal Bakery has sparked the kerfuffle with no less than eight options for ways locals eat their pies. The OG is the original way, which means starting off with a one-bite wonder. Then there is The Dowser where you smother the square in so much tomato sauce that you cannot see any pastry. The topless method is the one I have already endorsed. The fourth way to eat your pie is the Divide and Conquer where you cut the pie in two with a knife. The Multi-Tasker involves eating the pie in one hand and juggling your mobile phone in the other. And the next way of eating your pie is

the Bite and Blow method where you are blowing on your pie the entire time because it is so hot. The Your Majesty move involves using a knife and fork to eat your pie (and you are posher than Posh Spice herself ). And finally, there is The Toddler: where you are a very messy eater, and you get in there and use your fingers to mix it all together. No thanks. But which are you? In a very serious world at the moment, I am loving the detour into a fun and very Aussie debate and have been loving finding out how my friends tackle their pastry. One friend tips her pie upside down to eat it. “Perhaps your brains have landed in your feet,” I suggested to her smugly ... until I tried it. It is actually genius. It is a cleaner way to eat it. Do not get me started on how you eat your Kit Kat, Tim Tam or a scone, for that matter. Do you have your chips under your chicken parmigiana or by the side in a nice, messy heap? And do you like your gravy on your Sunday roast over your meat and vegetables or just on the side potatoes? Try tipping your pie upside down this week and you just may surprise yourself with a new, lifelong habit.

WHAT IS A GOOD EDUCATION?

A

question I constantly reflect upon is: What is a good education? Of course, learning has always been at the heart of my response and providing the highest level of foundational knowledge and skills while sparking an insatiable curiosity in the Primary years is essential. With generational shifts during my time in education, my definition now also includes an unwavering focus on character development to equip students to be purposefully positioned to serve the greater good. Primary school students today are referred to as Generation Alpha (born between 2010 – 2025) and their characteristics outlined by social

researchers are exciting, heartening and challenging at the same time. It is suggested that Gen Alpha is a highly aspirational generation where having the ‘latest’ and ‘newest’ drives their innovative spirit. It is also reported that Gen Alpha may be the most overpraised generation in history, with a greater chance of growing up self-interested and impatient – craving social validation and expecting instant gratification. After all, Gen Alpha is learning in a world where people are constantly connected and ‘logged-on’ – Instagram, reality TV, YouTube, ChatGPT. Gen Alpha also is immersed in a culture of recognition, self-promotion and individualism, where it’s acceptable to avoid or to expect to be protected from ‘displeasure’ or ‘failure’. With

this in mind, I wholeheartedly believe that a good education must aim to instil strong moral values and compel children to develop civil-minded dispositions. A good education must empower children to serve the common good, recognising that we each have an obligation to contribute to the wellbeing of the communities to which we belong. In our Primary school at Flinders, we proudly strive to achieve this through an intentional focus on teaching collaborative strategies and encouraging our students to contribute through service learning. We also encourage students to participate and to ‘have a go’ through many team-based opportunities, from our recently introduced triathlon to regular House events, team sports, co-curricular clubs and being active in musical ensembles, including our new Primary rock bands – a huge hit. Our bespoke, human-centred, design-thinking approach explicitly teaches empathy and motivates our students to make a difference in the world. This year,

students have prototyped solutions for residents of an aged care home to address their daily challenges, used solar to assist vulnerable people in our community, and ideated creative solutions to educate about the challenges faced by refugees in Australia. Students have collaborated on future designs to make the Alexandra Headland foreshore more accessible and inclusive, and to ensure the Sunshine Coast Biosphere is front and centre when designing urban developments beyond the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. I believe our future is in good hands when students learn through opportunities that enable them to be a part of something bigger than themselves, as this provides vast potential for Gen Alpha to develop empathy as a way of being, and to view their positive contribution to society as both a responsibility and a privilege. APPROVALS DOWN AS CONSTRUCTION TIMES BLOW OUT Latest figures show we are well short of where we need to be when it comes to the number of homes needed to meet Queensland’s housing targets.

T

he Sunshine Coast has bucked a downward trend for new home construction, as statewide dwelling approvals fall well short of what’s needed to meet Queensland’s housing needs. Increased demand for new detached houses saw Sunshine Coast dwelling approvals increase 12 per cent over the past three months. But across the year, approvals on the Coast were down 20 per cent. The Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Wide Bay were the only regions to record growth in dwelling approvals over the past three months, and all regions in Queensland reported negative growth over the past 12 months. The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics for September shows a 12-month total of 34,060 new dwellings approved across Queensland. This represents an eight per cent drop and is well short of the 48,000 homes needed each year to meet Queensland’s share of the national five-year target of 1.2

million homes. Master Builders CEO Paul Bidwell says it is a tall order for the industry to deliver the housing targets and meet the needs of the massive construction program underway in Queensland while continuing to deal with delays and cost hikes. “Back in 2016, we built 50,000 new

homes in a year, so it can be done,” he says. “But looking to the future, the current pipeline of new housing is just 34,000 dwellings approved in the 12 months to September 2023. This is well short of where we need to be.” In a press release, Master Builders said the shortage of approvals was

exacerbated by the time taken to complete construction. According to ABS data, during 2022-23 the average time from commencement to completion for new apartments in Queensland increased by six months to 26 months, while the average time for new houses increased by one month to eight months. Meanwhile, non-residential approvals have surged to an unprecedented high of $19.3 billion, as the government’s massive capital works program gets underway. “It’s housing that is languishing, while non-residential is keeping the industry buoyant with the massive government capital works program,” Mr Bidwell says. “It is essential we keep building homes or the housing crisis will worsen. To do this, we need to ensure new home construction costs are kept in check and ensure the industry isn’t held back by unnecessary red tape and inefficiency.”
