This don’t-miss event – one day longer than recent past conventions – will be jam-packed with something for everyone as we spotlight the fraternity’s past, present, and future. Here are just a few of the exciting features in store when you come to sunny Sacramento next August.

Featured artist Chen Yi Internationally renowned Chen Yi, the fraternity’s 2012 Sterling Patron, will be composer-inresidence for two full convention days. Dr. Chen will give a composition workshop, be available for individual composer consultations, and speak at Saturday’s concluding banquet. (See the winter 2012 Triangle to learn more about Chen Yi.)

Foundation 50th anniversary celebration The spotlight shines on the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation as it concludes its year-long golden anniversary celebration. The Foundation will host a convention luncheon, recital concert by past International Competition winners, workshop on preparing successful scholarship applications, and other special events.

International Competition Finalists in the 2014 Mu Phi Epsilon International Competition will give performances of a lifetime for distinguished judges and audiences watching with enthusiastic anticipation. Could one of the finalists be you? The winner will perform a solo recital a few days later, always a convention highlight.

Training for chapter leaders Chapter and district leaders clamor for intensive training to help their chapters grow, flourish, and operate successfully. The convention schedule includes a half-day district directors’ training and three different workshop sessions for chapter delegates.

Sacramento is within easy driving distance of Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Yosemite, and other popular destinations, so plan some personal time before or after convention to take in the sights. Opportunities to see a bit of Sacramento are also built into the convention schedule. This is just a sampling of what convention delegates and attendees will experience. news about members and chapters Marlon Daniel (Mu Xi, Allied) has been appointed orchestra music director of the new Colours of Music Festival. The festival is October 22-27 in Charleston, SC. Ann Davis (Phi Lambda, Washington D.C. Alumni) was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. The only musician to be accorded the honor, she was recognized for lifelong achievement as a pianist and current volunteer service. Still an active performer, her recent concerts included a May lecture/performance commemorating Brahms’s 180th birthday, four service concerts in local public schools, and a chorale concert. ElmaMae Henderson (Theta) performed in February for the Stockton (CA) Wednesday Morning Musicale, for which she also has served two terms as president. The program included three sacred choruses she composed. She also teaches music privately, volunteers in a kindergarten, and writes. Soprano Arietha Lockhart (Beta Gamma, Atlanta Alumni, ACME) won third place in the professional opera division of The American Prize in Voice/Friedrich and Virginia Schorr Memorial Award, 2013.

Adrienne Albert (Phi Nu, Los Angeles Alumni, ACME) was a finalist for The American Prize 2013 in orchestral composition and a semi-finalist in choral composition. Her newest work Swing Shift for bassoon, piano, and drums was premiered at the International Double Reed conference. Pianist Julie Bees (Phi Pi, Wichita Alumni) performed as soloist in the Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 with Hong Kong’s SAR Philharmonic in April. She also taught a master class at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.

Mu Nu president Jane Davidson received the Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award for over 250 service hours in 2012. Her service included managing the Luckman World Arts Sidestage at nonprofit venue Levitt Pavilion Pasadena and volunteering with USC’s Arts and Humanities initiative Visions and Voices. Wichita Alumni initiated six special election members (pictured below) in summer 2012. President Marjorie Walton (Phi Pi, Wichita Alumni) was assisted by Chy Billings (Phi Pi) and several other Phi Pi members. Late candidate Doris Nyberg was honored posthumously with a tribute read by her close friend Betty Partridge (Phi Pi, Wichita Alumni vice president). Julia Hoppes (Phi Pi, Wichita Alumni treasurer) hosted.

Patricia Callan (Phi Upsilon, Boston Alumni) is a busy author. Her new play The Reading Club was recently performed by the One Act Players of San Jose, her poem “Clerking at the Ideal Laundry” is online in text and audio at Rattle poetry magazine (rattle.com) and her chapbook Field Songs has just been released. A “hidden organ of Rochester” gave up its secrets when Mitzie Collins (Mu Chi, Rochester Alumni) featured it in a performance-demonstration. The event included a mini-concert and an opportunity for others to play the mint-condition 1926 Skinner organ. Cynthia Howk (Phi Psi, Rochester Alumni) assisted with research. 2

Final Notes Della Willson Chester Mu Delta, November 13, 1938 Kansas City Alumni Died April 19, 2013 Pianist. Della taught piano in her home for more than sixty years, reaching several generations of Kansas City area children. She served on the board of Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Harriett Bernice Lubbers Horrigan Phi Zeta, November 8, 1935 Dayton Alumni Died April 24, 2013 Vocalist, music educator. Harriet taught music in elementary schools and served many community arts organizations. A past president of Dayton Alumni, she also served as East Central Province Governor 19771983. Sadie Alma (Sally) Graham Owens Mu Mu, March 21, 1937 Wichita Alumni Died May 14, 2013 Vocalist, violinist. Sally was a vocal music supervisor for Wichita public schools and a 75-year Mu Phi. June L. Moore Mu Gamma, November 20, 1938 Died May 21, 2013 Music educator. A long-time public school music teacher, June also conducted the Lincoln Youth Symphony, played in the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, and was a published researcher. Rachel D. Lease Scott-Johns Gamma, November 3, 1935 Died April 27, 2013 Pianist, organist, church musician, music educator.

Rachel was a church organist and concert performer, having studied organ with (among others) Ava Comin Case, national president of Mu Phi Epsilon 1942-1948. Nell R. Denson Shehorn Phi Gamma, November 29, 1936 Died February 3, 2013 Pianist. Trained as a concert pianist, Nell taught piano. She was active in various alumni chapters wherever her husband’s jobs took them. Mary Lynne Stewart Shumway Epsilon Chi, April 9, 1959 San Francisco Alumni Died November 5, 2012 Pianist. Mary Lynne taught private piano and served her church as organist. Mary Ausplund Tooze Epsilon Delta, January 7, 1962 Portland Alumni Died January 24, 2013 Pianist. Mary studied composition with Darius Milhaud. She was a significant patron of Oregon arts and for many years she hosted a monthly playing group in her home. Elizabeth Ann Wrancher Epsilon Omicron, May 28, 1954 ACME Died March 6, 2012 Vocalist. A lyric dramatic soprano, Elizabeth was a Fulbright scholar in Germany where she sang many roles and performed in several major European opera houses. She was the first American to win first prize in the International Music Contest. For three decades she was a guest soloist with major orchestras in Germany and the U.S. Her recordings are housed in the Salzburg Mozarteum archives in Augsburg. Elizabeth taught university-level vocal music, was noted as an adjudicator and master class teacher, and performed in three German films.
