Innovative ideas for available space, including attracting wildlife and staving off floooding, have been making the headlines lately. We’ve explored how urban planners, developers and homeowners can help to save the planet.

Cityscapes In order to catch up with Europe, roof and sky gardens in Britain could be set to take off over the next few years to make our homes and cities as hospitable to wildlife as possible. At the same time, these new rooftop pastures are set to minimise energy costs, flooding, and the effects of pollution. Germany alone has over 80 million square metres 30 Your Move

of planted roof gardens. Where space is becoming an issue in crowded cities, the construction of roof gardens and terraces could transform how we treat our recreational space and give those living in the city centres a more pleasant environment. Chavasse Park at Liverpool One is one such example of green space in a city centre, with advantages for city goers

and those living in the landmark One Park West. Creating lawns on the roof, planting trees and creating features, is a traditional option which is becoming popular with developers; at City View in Liverpool city centre, the apartment blocks house trees on the roof. However, more contemporary designs for roof gardens use integrated water management systems to drain

rainwater, insulate and cool the building, and can be very low maintenance - as well as more aesthetically interesting. Living roofs Roofing has become a popular subject among developers and homeowners keen to build in a more sustainable fashion. The ‘Living Roof ’ network was launched in March by the writer Professor Germaine Greer who is president of Buglife, in London to encourage developers and planners of urban buildings to see the roofs of buildings as a habitat for birds, butterflies and bees, and reverse the decline of urban wildlife. The three-year project will see living roofs installed on a number of corporate buildings including the Transport for London headquarters, Ford’s at Dagenham, University of East London and Lewisham Town Hall, and it’s hoped that others will follow in the commercial and residential markets. Roofing options An ‘extensive green roof ’ is the most low maintenance option, as it is generally planted with sedum and designed to look after itself for most of the year. This was the kind used by the National Wildflower Centre in Court Hey Park, Knowsley, with seeds sown into the recycled textile matting under gravel. Celebrities have been leading the way in sustainable building; it was announced in the press in January last year that Steven Gerrard’s gym and games building at his property in Formby would use a living sedum roof. The sedum matting, which comes from the sedum plant, grows well in poor soil and exposed conditions making it ideal for this purpose. Drought tolerant and hardy, they also produce beautiful flowers in summer. An ‘intensive green roof ’ on the other hand can be used on a roof which will be used

for leisure purposes and requires ongoing maintenance to keep at its best, and is usually more traditionally designed with lawns, gardens and plants that wouldn’t be out of place in any garden. A ‘brown roof ’ can be created using the rubble left over from the building process and can be left to seed a wildflower or meadow mix – looking pretty and adding variety to the outside space. Environmental benefits The advantages for the environment of a living roof are also plentiful. A living green roof which will attract birds and wildlife to your garden and help plants to pollinate is excellent for the local eco-system. They also absorb dust, pollutants, greenhouse gases and noise, making the city more hospitable to wildlife visitors. A living roof can be installed on roofs with a slope of up to 45 degrees, including shed roofs,

summerhouses and even bird houses, and blending a building’s appearance into the surrounding environment. Green roofs also have the advantage of insulating the home through the winter months and cooling the property in summer, reducing energy costs. They also soak up water during a heavy rainfall and release it more slowly, alleviating flooding and allowing rain to remain in the natural water cycle and not immediately travel into the sewer system. Allotments Digging for Victory was a successful wartime campaign in the early 1940s that saw the British return to their gardens to grow their own crops, and in today’s busy world more and people are turning to local allotments or their own vegetable patch to feel a connection with the earth and with where their food comes

from. Research conducted by the Charities Aid Foundation found that the current economic climate has made people reassess their priorities, and to place less importance on material possessions and more on their families. They’re also spending more time enjoying simpler pleasures, and this is where gardening comes into its own. With supermarket prices increasing and organic produce generating more and more interest, homeowners are using their gardens to grow fresh herbs and vegetables, and looking for more space in allotments in their area. The ‘grow your own campaign’ backed by the National Trust aims to increase national selfsufficiency and reduce the reliance on expensive imports that are bad for the environment, don’t taste as good, and which see our green spaces lose out. During the 1940s, 1.5 million allotments supplied 10 per cent of what we eat, while today only 250,000 allotments are in service. That said, more than 15.5 million people in Britain are estimated to be growing some of their own food as a result of the economic downturn. Jo Morfee, sales and marketing officer at Homeshub (the one stop shop for affordable housing) is a vegetarian. She grows her own food in an allotment near to where she lives in south Liverpool: “I’ve always been in love with the idea of home-grown food because that’s my diet. It’s a really cheap hobby once you’ve paid your annual rent, which is minimal, and you only really need to buy some seeds and cuttings. People are really generous with sharing their crops and ideas with you, and it’s a really rewarding experience.” While there may be a waiting list for an allotment, show your enthusiasm by shopping at the allotment store for your vegetables and think about helping out another gardener to pick up some tips. Interior at Canterbury Fields

A brand new home with Gladedale North West’s shared equity scheme at Canterbury Fields, St Helens, is aiming to share the costs for buyers. Get your house in order An initiative to encourage communities to work together to respect and protect one another has been launched by the city council in Liverpool. ‘Get Your House in Order’ is a campaign to raise awareness of problems including excessive noise, anti-social behavior, and those who allow their homes to be used for criminal activity. Vacant properties will be investigated to see whether they can be brought back into use, and residents will be encouraged to report problems for the benefit of the wider community. Cllr. Marilyn Fielding, executive member for Safer, Stronger Communities, commented: “Houses used for growing drugs can have a terrible effect, and we want to clamp down on properties and landlords and make sure that landlords act responsibly.

“The city council will work with landlords to help with any problems they are having with tenants, but landlords who knowingly allow their properties to be used for criminal and antisocial activities should beware.” The council has the power to crack down on rogue landlords by serving an Improvement Notice, which requires improvements to be made to the property, making a Prohibition Order that prohibits the use of premises, and taking emergency action when there is imminent risk to health and safety. NEW LOOK FOR AIGBURTH STORE A new look has been unveiled at Elaine Cunningham Interiors store on Aigburth Road. The shop has been redecorated in stunning new designs from Bo Concept and Designers Guild for spring and summer 2009, and the new colours and fabrics are already proving popular with the clientele. Owner Elaine has also taken on two work placement students from Hugh Baird College who are working towards their official merchandising and promotions foundation degree. Erin McMenamin and Ashlea Miller contacted the shop when searching for a work placement, because they enjoyed visiting

the store so much and had seen Elaine’s designs in restaurants and other venues. Ashlea commented: “It’s been a brilliant opportunity, and we’ve learned so much already.” Erin added: “We’ve been sourcing and pricing products, dressing and rearranging the shop, and we’ve even been out on consultations.” Elaine commented: “It’s important to give young people a chance and the girls have been wonderful, a real breath of fresh air. The sales and lettings consultant Ian Taylor, Keppie Massie Residential Sales and lettings consultant Ian Taylor relishes the social side of his role at Keppie Massie Residential. He focuses on providing the whole sales package, even going as far as to provide clients with an overview of their new home city. How did you first get into property? I started at Jones & Chapman working part time, which was handy as I was studying property management and real estate at John Moores University so I already had a strong interest in the field. It was a good grounding experience, as I was probably quite raw when I started. I saw how business worked and was interested to know more.

How has your career progressed? I worked my way up to the role of sales negotiator there and studied the CEMAP mortgage qualification, which gave me a lot of confidence. It was at that point I heard about the position at Keppie Massie Residential. I knew people within the organisation, which gave me an insight, so I knew applying for the position was the right decision.

What can’t you live without? I hate being without my Blackberry as I use it for absolutely everything. It helps me keep in touch for work (obviously) but I’m also addicted to checking Facebook, the web and keeping my social life in check. I broke it a few weeks ago and was totally lost whilst it was being fixed!

Movers How did you choose this property? We heard about the Regenda scheme from our friends who were actually paying less for their mortgage than we were for renting. As we’re both selfemployed and didn’t have a lot of savings this was a really good option for us, and the house is really well built and designed with big rooms and an extended kitchen. How is it laid out? Downstairs we have two reception rooms leading off the hallway which we use for different purposes. The walls throughout the house are white as we had it all replastered when we moved in, and we haven’t hung up our artwork yet. The hallway is painted in a subtle grey/lilac shade, and we have a beautiful garland light which casts pretty shadows.

How are you using your other rooms? We have another bedroom which Shane is using as his studio/office with all of his musical equipment, piano, drum kit, and guitars in there. We also have the beginnings of a loft conversion which we are still deciding how to use. The main bathroom is all white with grey accessories and we’re hoping to get a slate floor. We also have a decorative tile from Habitat hanging in there.

Katriona Beales, 27, is an artist and has bought a Victorian terraced house in Kensington with her husband Shane Beales, 25, a musician. They purchased the property with The Regenda Group’s ‘Access to Home Ownership’ scheme.

What about the other reception room? The middle room is decorated in bright and primary colours. We have two navy sofas, a red rug, and a clock from Utility that’s made from plastic cubes. The record player and TV are in there, as well as our art deco display case which we call the ‘cabinet of curiosities’. It’s full of memorabilia from our holidays and from our honeymoon in Florence.

Take us upstairs… The master bedroom is all white with rich chocolate brown and red soft furnishings and an oak bed. Our curtains are red, white and gold in silk from India and I’ll be putting up some of my own artwork which fits in with the colours, as it’s made of belts and buckles on a red satin background, and a beautiful picture I bought from a friend at university which uses different colours on a brown base.

What would be your dream buy? I’ve always wanted a cherry coloured kitchen that was really warm and inviting, with red units but that’s a long way off yet – at the moment we have a huge eight feet pine table for entertaining. How have you decorated it? The front room is my quiet space and that’s all white with a pale lime green chenille rug and an olive green theme, with a pebble light on the window sill. I keep the bookcase in there and we have a quirky CD case that looks quite gothic in dark wood.

Paul Young Interview //// TALENT IN THE CITY

Texan tones Singer, Paul Young, recently visited Liverpool to perform at the Albert Dock’s Blue Live Lounge with band, Los Pacaminos. Your Move caught up with him to find out more about his music.

44 Your Move

Paul, what brought you to Liverpool this time? Our gig at Baby Blue. We play together as, and when, we can and try not to restrict ourselves to long tours. We also choose smaller venues where we know we can create a really good atmosphere. The style of music is Tex Mex, which I would describe as rock and roll music with accordions and pedal steel guitar. It’s really happy music so works best in small clubs where people can really enjoy themselves and dance. What is your role in the band? Well, there are seven of us in the band and five of us sing. I probably sing in a straighter style then I do when I’m performing alone, so that our voices blend well.

How has your musical path led you here? If I had to pin down what - or who - it was that started me on this journey I would say Ry Cooder. He inspired me to value a variety of styles and the fusion of different sounds. I spent about a decade following and absorbing American Soul and incorporating it into my own music; then added Mexican singers to my group, which led to an interest in Mexican music. It has gripped me. What reaction do you get from fans these days? It usually comes down to whether people get what I am now when they see me perform with Los Pacaminos. If they have preconceptions from the ’80s about who I am and what I’m going to sing, then they may not enjoy the

gig as much as if they are already fans of Tex Mex - or if they are just prepared to give it a go and listen. A gig at Liverpool’s Royal Court, years ago, has always stood out in my mind. It used to be quite common for paint from the ceiling of old theatres to flutter down when the crowd gave you a warm (and loud) reaction. But on this occasion tiny flecks of silver paint fluttered down all the way through the show as the crowd danced; it created a really special atmosphere. What is the first song you can remember performing as a little boy? Magic Moments (the Perry Como song) although my mum has a better recollection of it than I do. When I was about five I would sing it at the top of my voice every time I was on the bus with her. Apparently, I always got

a round of applause too. Who are you currently listening to? I love world music but specifically South American bands. There is a Mexican band called Kinky which makes great club music with a mixture of Mexican chants - instead of hip hop - and sampling. Naturally Seven is an American band I’ve also got on my iPod at the moment. Which singers inspired you? Otis Redding has been a very special inspiration. His voice creates a sound which really has the power to touch me. And people still say to me that my voice most closely resembles Paul Rogers from the band, Free. Maybe we absorb influences subconsciously along the way and then reinterpret them.

Digital Dimensions My son is obsessed with Star Wars. We are going to decorate his room in the Easter holidays. I want to simply paint the walls and then use a border or a frieze of some sort featuring his favourite characters from Star Wars. I’m having problems finding a border of wallpaper with Star Wars on! I thought it would be easy and now I’ve promised this I’m really starting to panic! Could you help me?

I too have had a search and I agree, Star Wars border paper is really hard to find. You may be lucky and find a couple of rolls on eBay, other than that, creating your own border may be the way forward. Of course you would have to be careful about the copyright of the images you use but other than that you and your son could be really creative. There are many companies online who offer a digital, bespoke wall coverings service. They could help in the design of your border or frieze and offer different solutions. I hope you have fun designing this and that your son gets his perfect room for Easter.

African Delights Last year we spent an amazing holiday in Marrakech! We loved walking around the markets and enjoyed the atmosphere. I fell in love with the large lanterns on display but at the time didn’t purchase one as we had nowhere to put it. A year later we’ve decided to build a conservatory and now have the perfect space for a lantern, but with no means of getting one. Is there anywhere in the UK that sells them? I love Marrakech and would agree with you that the punched metal lanterns and the lacy shadows they cast are beautiful. The patterns especially look fantastic on the polished tadelakt walls. The web site www.grahamandgreen.co.uk has just started selling large punched metal lanterns. The lanterns are made from copper or nickel depending on the type of finish you require and would definitely make a statement in your conservatory.

Carving Copies We have just moved and really love our new house. The fireplace in the lounge is beautiful although the old mouldings are looking really worn. One has fallen off completely! We would like to restore it but do not know where we can purchase the mouldings, can you help?

As brighter days light up your outdoor space, take to painting your wooden frames and doors in time for summer.

Make sure you remove the previous layer of flaking paint with a scraper, but take care not to damage the wood surface beneath. Place painter’s tape around any edges you want to make sure do not get paint upon, such as the windows or the house number, and apply your primer with a roller for larger areas and a brush for the smaller areas. When this is dry, apply the first coat of paint. Wait for this to be completely dry before applying the second coat, or the paint may bubble, and enjoy your freshly painted frames and doors.

The Great Green Sculpture Challenge From 4-9 and 11-17 April, Tate Liverpool is hosting The Great Green Sculpture Challenge, for which all the family is invited to bring along plastic containers, bags and newspapers to transform ‘rubbish’ into wonderful sculptures.

We’ve heard many times that showers use much less water than baths and are therefore better for the environment, but this logic can be flawed. If yours is a power shower, it only takes about five minutes before you’ll have used the recommended amount – an Eco Teardrop is a timer that will remind you when enough’s enough. By installing a water metre, you could save money and water as you’ll only be paying for what you use. Taking a shallow bath could be a guilt-free pleasure, if you use less soap and bathing product than if you were lathering your whole body under the shower. However, think about where all that bath/shower water is going – down the plughole – and instead collect it in buckets or jugs to re use elsewhere. (If you choose to take a shower, put the plug in the bath or stand up a bucket under the water flow.) This grey water can be used to flush the toilet, to rinse out the sink and, if not too soapy, to water the plants and clean out garden tools and apparatus. Reduce your use of soap and products, choose organic ones where possible, and recycle your plastic bottles to make bathtime as stress-free as possible for all concerned. The launch of One Night in Istanbul, a new play by cowriter of Brick Up the Mersey Tunnels, Nicky Allt, took place at Café Sports on Stanley Street. The new play tells the story for four football fans in Istanbul in 2005, and stars John McArdle, known famously for his role as Billy Corkhill in Brookside, and Liverpool comedian and writer John Bishop, who mingled with guests and footballing stars at the Stanley Street venue ahead of its performance from 9 until 18 July at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Table Talk //// LUCY OLIVER INTERVIEWS SID VANCE AT AMBER WINE BAR AND BISTRO

Amber Wine Bar and Bistro on Rose Lane could be an exclusive interiors shop from the outside. The inside sparkles with crystal mirrors and chandeliers, where Sid Vance is already waiting when I join him for lunch. Sid, who has over 17 years experience in estate agency, was headhunted to lead and run Homelets, which won the Your Move award for best lettings agency in 2008, and the more recently launched Homesales, from the Allerton Road and Warrington branches. With a background in property, hospitality and corporate affairs around the world, from Beverly Hills to New York and Canada, Sid brings more to the table than the average menu; fortunately for us Amber offers an ample selection of specials. We choose the broccoli and potato soup to start, which arrives in a huge bowl with a board of bread, and then the chef ’s recommendation; roast pork chop with peppercorn sauce on a bed of mash, and finished with mushrooms and beef tomato. The sauce adds a delicious seasoning to the meal

without being overpowering, and the flavours in the mushrooms and tomatoes are subtle and complementary. Sid’s first move at Homelets and Homesales has been to bring the extended team of property advisors in house: “Most agencies will offer the telephone number to a mortgage advisor or a solicitor, but we’re going a step further and bringing all our services under one roof. We’re working with Worrall Power Solicitors, Brian Owens and Dave Forrest at Myriad Mortgage Services Ltd and Fran from Furnish that Room so that every aspect of selling, buying, renting or lettings a property is smoother. All of the necessary HIPs, IFAs, conveyancing, etc, can all be organised here in one visit. “Clients who come in through our doors won’t need to walk out until they have everything they need.” The umbrella approach is one that works for both landlords and tenants: “My aim is to take the hassle out of property. Our edge is that we’re treating our customers as people in a stress-free

environment.” Before joining Homelets to manage the teams, which he and they are enjoying immensely, Sid took his expertise to Venmore for five years, and then spent 10 months at David Wilson, where he made 52 sales on new developments and was recognised with numerous awards: “I don’t regret Venmore as it reintroduced me to city centre estate agency. I’ve worked in property around the world, and now I’m using my talents in Liverpool again and it’s good to be able to say; I’m back.” Over cappuccino, I ask Sid about his passions and it’s clear that his heart is in war torn West Africa, with the families and children he’s adopted. He built an orphanage and pays for the children's education: “I visit twice a year and I’ll ring them every Saturday - if there’s anything they want I’ll wire over the money. I have some wonderful friends who’ve donated very generously.” With that, it’s back to the Homelets office, where things are looking very bright indeed.

“Eyebeam’s Sustainability Road Show is a playful exploration on the theme of ‘tinkering, hacking, making and doing’.” The planet is at the top of the agenda during Liverpool’s Year of the Environment, and FACT on Wood Street has launched a new exhibition on the theme. ‘Climate for Change’ is a unique experiment in activism, examining the multiple crises affecting the planet; ecological, financial, food and housing. Gallery One welcomed visitors to respond to these big questions in the first of a number of events running during FACT’s ‘UNsustainable year’. Eyebeam’s Sustainability Road Show, with a series of hands-on workshops and activities, is a playful exploration on the theme, and crowds gathered to have a go at ‘tinkering, hacking, making and doing’.
