Located within the catchment area of several desirable local schools and with good transport links both in and out of the city, this property makes for the ideal family home. The property has a three-car garage and a games room with a pool table. The two spacious reception rooms and fully fitted contemporary kitchen offer multiple and flexible living spaces. your move help & advice

How to... Ask their agent

HOUSE SWAP

If the property you’d like is with another estate agent, then there still shouldn’t be a problem. Ask your agent to contact them and see if they can come to an arrangement where you can meet the vendor and talk it over. A house swap won’t mean that either agent loses their fee so, in effect, you’re actually helping them to make a sale.

Downsizing

If you’ve found your dream house in an estate agent’s window, or you need to downsize quickly, it can be difficult to know what to do in the current climate. It is still possible to make the move you want though, and there are many options you can take.

If your house is too large for your current and future needs, then you may have already been thinking about downsizing to a smaller property, or an apartment. For couples whose children have grown up and moved out, it may be time to start preparing for their own future. A smaller property means less space to keep clean and tidy, less of a garden to manage, and generally less maintenance and fewer repairs to make. While there are generally plenty of smaller properties on the general market, swapping house with another vendor could provide the perfect solution to your downsizing needs. By taking on a smaller property, even if it may not be the exact one you’d have chosen, you can free up a large slice of equity on your old home to give you many options financially. Ask your agent if they know of families looking to buy who have a smaller property to sell and you may be surprised by the results.

Moving away

By agreeing to a house swap, you’re not signing up for somebody else’s life in a tacky reality TV show; you could be finding your dream home to move into, or freeing yourself up from a particular property to start the search for your new home. Follow our top tips to house swapping to see if something so quirky could be for you.

Upsizing For couples with a growing family, running out of space can be very stressful, and being able to move house may be at the top of your Christmas list. If you’ve seen a property you like, there’s nothing worse than worrying that you may not be able to sell your own home in time to move. One option available to you though may be to see if the owner will make a swap. Your smaller property could be an ideal investment opportunity for them which, at

the same time and depending on their personal circumstances, frees up the extra equity from their own home for them to move house.

Ask your agent

If you’re hoping to move away for a new job or a new life in another city, you may well want to sell your old home before going. Traveling back to check up on a property which hasn’t sold can be expensive and time consuming, so selling it to a new buyer will do wonders for your peace of mind. Depending on what type of property it is that you own, swapping your house for a smaller home means that you will free up essential equity on the property which will fund your new life. The smaller home could then be used as a rental property, offering you a return each month to help your finances in the current climate, until you find another buyer.

Top Tips

If the property you’re selling and the property you’d like are available at the same estate agent, then making a house swap will depend just upon both vendors’ needs and requirements. If you spot a property you’d like to swap your home for, approach your estate agent and see if they can help you discuss the idea with the other vendor. Without knowing the vendor’s individual circumstances, such as why they are selling, it is difficult to know whether this option could work. Do they need to move away for work, and quickly? Is this an investment property they’re not living in? If you don’t ask the question, you won’t know.

Always view the property you’re going to be swapping for, even if you intend to rent it out and not live there. Don’t feel afraid of asking your agent to approach another agent and see if they can arrange a swap; they’ll usually be happy to help. Do make sure your finances and HIP are all in place to help you move out, and into your new home, quickly and easily. Good luck!

The housebuilder’s partnership with an Exchange Bond means moving house over the festive period is still a viable option for prospective buyers in Liverpool, despite the current economic downturn. Underwritten by the Exchange insurance company, the Exchange Bond replaces the deposit that is normally made in cash to the seller upon the exchange of contracts that secures the property. Homes all over the north-west, including Liverpool, are available under this offer and McInerney will cover the first 12 months of the mortgage for up to £500 a month. Sales and marketing director for McInerney Homes, Stephen Grant, commented: “In the current economic climate, we’ve been looking at ways to lift the gloom for the people in the north-west. We are really committed to finding the best and most economic ways of structuring payment and this offer has got to be up there with the very best.” More information on this scheme and McInerney’s other developments can be found at www.mcinerneyhomes.com. LIVERPOOL RISES THROUGH THE RETAIL RANKINGS

Recent research into the retail activity of cities across the country has seen Liverpool jump a huge ten places in the UK retail rankings in just seven months. Our city centre now comes in fifth in the tables, a leap up from fifteenth place. That’s according to a new report released by Liverpool One, which has chalked up some impressive sales figures since the opening of its first phase in May this year. The recent figures show strength in local spending amid a national retail slowdown, and will undoubtedly go a long way to breeding confidence amongst investors who are looking to Liverpool to make their profit. As well as being aesthetically beneficial to Liverpool’s commercial image, the physical presence of Liverpool One bodes well for those inner city property

developers. Thanks to the sheer span of the development across a previously vacant stretch of Chavasse Park, city centre dwellers have become fond of the new development of shops and leisure space as an attractive link between desirable living areas such as the Albert Dock and the business district of Dale Street, as well as a complementary offering to the city’s picturesque Georgian Quarter. With surrounding areas already seeing an increase in traffic, imminent instalments such as the One Park West Cesar Pelli building, housing 326 apartments, and the 78 apartments being leased by BridgeStreet Worldwide, are sure to whet the appetite of property investors and tenants alike, seeking to secure a home in Liverpool’s thriving environment.

Liverpool through migrants’ eyes To mark the 80th year of its activity in the social housing and regeneration of Liverpool, the Riverside Group has commissioned an exhibition of photography that takes a look at Liverpool through the eyes of its migrants. Hugh Owen, director of policy and communication for the Riverside Group commented upon the importance of this landmark and how the company has grown with the city itself: “When we started out in 1928 as Liverpool Improved Houses, Liverpool was a city in decline, blighted by slums. Over the last 80 years we have been able to transform lives and revitalise neighbourhoods. Now Liverpool is taking centre stage as European Capital of Culture”. Opening on 26 November at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, the exhibition will feature recognisable Liverpool subjects such as chief of Merseyside Police, Bernard Hogan-Howe and television dramatist Alan Bleasdale. The photographs were taken by six local photographers capturing the subjects in their favourite environments. Interviews have been carried out by the pupils of Upton Hall High School and these will also be on display to voice the city means to the famous photographed faces. After an initial showing at the Anglican Cathedral the exhibition will then move to City Exchange, Old Hall Street from December 4-18.

Abbey-letts on the rental scene A recent change in market conditions has led to a buoyancy in rentals, encouraging new lettings agencies such as Abbey-letts to make a fast impact on the Liverpool property scene. The recent economic climate has seen an increase of prospective tenants for an openly competitive market amongst the many letting agencies on Merseyside. Abbey-letts have enjoyed a successful start thanks to their flexibility and attractive rates, offering lettings services as well as a ten per cent fully managed service. Though competing well in the city centre, abbey-letts also provide a wide selection of properties in the surrounding areas. In addition to its online success, Abbey-letts is keen to keep its relationship with customers personal. This is reflected in the list of local landlords with which Abbey-letts work and also the proportion of business generated from referrals and previous customer recommendations. Abbey-letts can be found at Tradewind Square, or online at www.abbey-letts.com.

LISTED LUXURY IN ALLERTON One of Liverpool’s most historic houses is being offered for sale by Keppie Massie Residential. Converted from the original stables of Cleveley House, Cleveley Stables was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, best known for his work on Liverpool Cathedral. The Grade II listed home on Allerton Road, built in the 1700s is one of the most luxurious in Merseyside. Set behind electronic gates and privacy walling built of York stone, the house has, in the past, been home to more than one Premiership footballer. The elegant entrance hall, with a formal lounge and dining room, leads to a spacious family room and a kitchen fitted with top of the range units in rosewood finish and under-floor mood lighting. The historic four bedroom property has been modernized to include a leisure suite with a heated swimming pool, lounge mezzanine, gymnasium, shower room and steam room, and is completed by tranquil Japanese style gardens. Sue Taylor, head of Keppie Massie Residential, commented: This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to live a luxurious lifestyle, whilst at the same time, having access to all the south Liverpool restaurants, schools, shops and motorway networks. This home not only has the “wow” factor, but has been meticulously designed to provide every possible comfort to relieve the stresses and strains of working life”. The asking price for the property is £1,800,000. Viewing is highly recommended, and all enquiries should be made to Keppie Massie Residential on 0151 236 9660.

New negotiator at Northwood Northwood, the property management company specialising in guaranteed rental income, has recently recruited a lettings negotiator. Stephanie Oliver joins the team in the West Derby premises, and her appointment comes in response to the enormous demand from landlords enjoying the many benefits of Northwood’s unique services. Peter Bellamy, director of Northwood, said: “From a new start business, which opened in January 2006, our team in West Derby has grown organically to comprise seven full-time members of staff. We have great schemes to offer landlords in Liverpool. This, coupled with the

recruitment of high calibre staff, with excellent local knowledge and high levels of customer service are the reasons behind our success. “We have also enjoyed huge growth nationally; 30 new offices have opened over the last 3 years and Northwood is now able to boast an expanding network of 70 branches nationwide.” Stephanie commented on her appointment: “I found it easy settling into the team at West Derby; the staff here are great to work with. I have been incredibly busy since starting my new job and really enjoy the diverse workload. I have a good property mix in my portfolio and enjoy meeting some very interesting people.”

D’eco’rating for Christmas

Christmas is fast approaching and after a year of eco-conscious living, continue the green approach when adorning your home in a festive fashion. There are a number of options available to help make this Christmas a green one: • Re-using Christmas decorations is already a common practice in most households but there’s always room for improvement. Safe storage is key; take the time to wrap your decorations safely in newspaper before you put them away for another year. • If you think you’ve done enough over the years by way of re-using decorations and feel it’s time to add a few new dashes of colour and life onto your tree or walls, try to buy ethical and recycled products. Shared Earth has a range of Fair Trade decorations to suit all budgets and tastes and www.the-green-apple.co.uk and www.greenrewards.co.uk stock various fun recycled products and even solar-powered fairy lights. • A Christmas wreath is easily made at home and well worth the effort for an individual and environmentally friendly decoration to welcome visitors. Bend an old wire coat hanger into a circle and use florist’s wire to secure sprigs of holly or small fir tree branches to it to create the shape of a wreath. Add pinecones to make it fuller and spray some of them gold or silver to inject a bit of colour. To get the little ones involved in the spirit of things, make gingerbread tree decorations. Don’t forget to leave a small hole at the top before baking to thread ribbon through to hang from the tree. Free workshops are taking place at the National Wildflower Centre on 7 December, from 12pm until 4pm.

Taxman has been given new powers to track down buy-to-let landlords

❙ High quality wallpaper hanging Julia Casimo

Q. I have received a letter from the tax office asking me to give them details of a buy to let property which I own. I have never bothered to fill in a tax return, because I don’t make a profit. How did they find out? A. The tax office are putting a lot of effort into cross checking details from the Land Registry, the council tax registers and the housing benefit records to track down buy-to-let landlords not yet in the system. Up until now this has been a correspondence based process. This is all due to change soon, when buy-to-let landlords, or indeed their tenants could get a knock on the door from the taxman as part of a new government drive to crack down on the sector. After next April new powers will give officers of HM Revenue and Customs the right of entry into people’s homes if business records (and this includes a buy-to-let business) are kept there. There will also be a new penalty regime which can penalise people for not keeping adequate records amongst other things. HMRC are concerned that many buy-to-let investors incorrectly assume that they can offset the full cost of a repayment mortgage against their rental income. Other common errors include claiming the cost of capital expenditure against rental income or incorrectly allocating all of the rental proceeds to just one of the joint owners of a property.

Q. What should I do, should I respond to the letter? A. Yes. You will need to respond with details of your buy-tolet property, including the income and expenses throughout your period of ownership. The taxman will also probably want to find out how you funded the purchase, so be prepared to deal with this as well. I strongly suggest that you engage a tax advisor who has experience in this area to assist you.

director, The Design Foundry

“This city was built for and on commerce and has a deep-rooted sense of networking. Creative talent has been drawn to Liverpool for centuries, from the first, canny inhabitants, to the adventurous merchants of the 18th Century, to the prolific songwriters and musicians of the 50s and 60s. This creative spirit still thrives in Liverpool today, mostly due to the city’s stimulating environment – made up in most part of its open and culturally diverse outlook, manageable and human scale, flourishing club and restaurant scene and its solid infrastructure. These factors are key in luring and keeping talent and companies in the Liverpool City Region.”

Dougal Paver

“I’m less concerned with the message and more with the delivery mechanism. We have a limited budget relative to our ambitions and should focus on methodologies that deliver greatest value for money. In my book that’s on-line and PR. Advertising works, but you have to throw buckets of cash at it to do so, and we just don’t have that. Anything we spend on advertising is probably wasted, therefore. The huge quantities of global press coverage Liverpool has enjoyed this year amply demonstrates the point.”

Pieter Elbers,

What should a marketing campaign to promote the Liverpool City Region as a place to live, work and play focus on? Following the return of a Liverpool delegation to the capital in a bid to promote the area as a place to do business we consider the region’s selling points.

“We are delighted to be returning to Liverpool after such a long absence. Liverpool has emerged as a premier European destination in recent years and will prove a fantastic addition to KLM’s current 14 strong UK network when services commence to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in March 2009. It is the UK’s 4th largest city, boasting a wealth of cultural attractions for visitors. The renewal of the city’s partnership with KLM will drive further growth across the region’s business and leisure sectors, whilst placing Liverpool at the centre of world wide connections.”

Mike Edwards joint managing director, Kaleidoscope Advertising Design and Marketing

Carol Cavanagh, principal, Alphabet Design

“There are many strands that will capture the imagination of investors, visitors and people looking to relocate. The problem is simplicity and clarity, we need to develop a simple concise message, which defines and represents Liverpool and that of the wider city region. Developing a brand for the city beyond 2008, something that has been much talked about in the press recently, is critical, and I believe should be something which taps in to both the cultural and economic opportunities of the region and reflects the unique attitude and personality of the people of Liverpool.” “Liverpool should concentrate on its unique selling points. In recent years we have agreed on our strengths, targeting them in a focused way. We start from a unique position of strength of product. But the internal market must share the vision and not all have had the opportunity to do so. We must make sure everyone shares in this new resurgence, not just the same few. The fantastic success of ’08 year shows how this energy can be harnessed. Liverpool’s brand must be based on substance and appeal to investors, visitors, policy makers and locals. It will succeed when it acts as an umbrella, under which we can work together to spread a message we all believe in.”

“Liverpool City Region is populated with picturesque leafy residential areas and landmark buildings proving popular locations for many film sets. Geographically we are perfectly positioned for leisure breaks and easy access to other commercial centres. Local financial organisations attract and support inward investment, established and new businesses. We are now able to compete with other major retail centres - andour universities are packed to the gunnels with students who have chosen Liverpool to study. Having worked on projects all over the UK I conclude that we are the warmest, funniest, most generous, most welcoming, stylish and cheekiest by far, of all of our fellow countrymen.”

How did you find this property? When we heard about the development we could see ourselves living here, as it’s part of a regeneration scheme that’s going to have a really positive future. We’d been looking for a new home for a while, but we weren’t sure what to expect and were still making up our minds as to what we were looking for, before we found this property. Do you like the area? We’re both locals and know it well which is an advantage, and we didn’t want to move far away. It’s also ideal for both of us for work, and where we like to socialise. It’s also a nice area and not too far from the shopping district which is convenient.

What about the kitchen? This was a really important room for us when we were choosing the house. It’s the heart of the home, so we needed to get that right. I work as a chef and I’m looking forward to cooking for Andrea. We didn’t used to have a lot of time to eat together but now we should do, and maybe Andrea will join in some of the cooking too.

Movers… First time buyer Paul Hollis, a chef, has just moved into a new two bedroom home with Andrea Duffy, a sales assistant from Huyton. They’ve purchased a Keepmoat property at Hamilton Place in the newly regenerated area of north Huyton.

What’s in your living area? This room is decorated in cream with a black leather three-seated and two-seated suite for when we have all our guests around. We’ve also got a really funky acrylic coffee table, a cinematic 60-inch flat screen TV and a really nice floor lamp. We also have some plants around the room to give it a fresh feel and help it look good.

What’s your favourite room? I’d have to say that I’d love a games room with a huge screen and all the latest consoles, as I’d be in there all day, but for Andrea it would be even more space for her clothes and shoes with a massive walk-in wardrobe; she’s got absolutely loads of them! What are your favourite features? I think it must be the two sets of French doors, so both of the living and dining rooms feel very spacious and allow in lots of light. When we were thinking about buying the house the large spaces were really important; it gives us so many options if we ever want to decorate. How have you made it your own? It’s difficult in a new house when you buy all new furniture to bring it to life. Even though everything looked perfect, we needed something to bring the walls to life and to bring some colour in. We had a professional photograph taken, not so long ago, which we’ve put on the wall and that makes it feel like a family home.

PICTURE THIS In the summer we decorated the dining room and we still have the finishing touches to add. This, unfortunately, involves finding a modern radiator, which we both like! We really need to finish the room before Christmas, as we have family staying with us. Can you help us with our search? The company Radiating Style could offer you the perfect solution. The company was established 15 years ago and specialises in producing designer and contemporary radiators. They have just launched a new motif model, which allows you to customise a flat panel radiator with a picture or artwork of your own choice. The image you choose will need to be of high quality and have no copyright protection. If you are struggling to find your own design, the company has over 40 stock images that you can also choose from.

DESKTOP DESIGNS

I really would like to purchase a desk for my girlfriend for Christmas. The desk has to be smart and contemporary and under £500. As our apartment is open plan I don’t think she would like anything that looks as if it could be in an office! Can you help me? The Conran Shop has a fantastic desk, which is available for £450 and can be ordered online! The Desk 51 Red, as the name suggests, is finished in a vibrant red. The piece is made from steel and MDF, and has a highly durable surface, which has a triple coating of polyurethane paint. The design is simple and sleek making it a striking alternative to a more traditional design. The specification also allows for inbuilt cable covers, and the shelf enables paperwork and the keyboard and the mouse etc to be stored away when not in use.

MONOCHROME SHADES I would like to decorate my lounge before Christmas. I have two black leather sofas, which I would have to keep, a glass television stand and coffee table. Everything else I am prepared to change! Could you give me some advice on what colours to use and inspiration for fabrics? Fashion’s current love affair with grey is spilling into interiors. Your furniture at the moment suggests a monochrome scheme, so I would think about using subtle shades of greys, silvers and off whites. This will create a very glamorous look echoing the 1930s. For wallpaper don’t be afraid to use a decorative pattern such as swirls, damask and stripes, which are all a real hit this season. Add sophistication by using luxurious fabrics, such as silks and velvets, and bring different textures into the room by accessorising with glass, steel and mirrored surfaces.

This year, Christmas shopping in Liverpool seems set to be brighter and better than ever. The decorations are already up at Liverpool One, the city’s much - publicised new shopping district, and retailers in the exclusive Metquarter and on the city’s much-loved Bold Street are pulling out all the stops to make our hometown a destination with a difference. In previous years, discerning shoppers may have travelled to neighbouring cities to find the perfect presents for loved ones, but we can now say with conviction that this has all changed. We’ve followed in the high-heeled footsteps of one Liverpool shopper, Antonia Martin-Wright, a sale surveyor at Bruntwood, a property company specialising is office space. She’s out on a mission to find all her Christmas gifts and goodies in her home city…

10.00am It’s the beginning of a busy day’s shopping in Liverpool, and I’ve so many presents to buy. My favourite shopping companion is on hand though, my mum; I can always trust her judgement. We’ve set aside a full day to blitz the shops, and it all begins with a morning coffee. We park in the Q Park at Liverpool One, which means we won’t have far to travel when we’re heading back with our shopping bags later, and then we drop into Pret A Manger for that latte to catch up and share our ideas on what to buy for Dad!

Next stop is Mango, where I find a beautiful dress and silver grey heels which would be perfect for Christmas Day. The range is always just so good in this store. Then we drop into David M Robinson, the jeweler to the stars, where I try on the gorgeous ‘Snowdrops’ aquamarine and diamond pendant; hopefully someone will spoil me at Christmas. We’ve already booked tickets to see Cinderella at the Empire Theatre this year for our panto fix, and we’ll be heading to the after show party too…I’m really looking forward to meeting Cilla Black!

11.30am

I love to visit the make up counters in John Lewis; Beryl on the Estee Lauder counter is incredibly helpful and gives me a mini makeover while I try out some of the new Christmas eye palettes. The rich hues will look fantastic with all the winter colours in the shops, and I love chatting to Beryl. After picking up some DVD box sets and Elemis moisturiser for my dad, we head to the gadgets section for my brother Alex, who’s a student, to choose a new Blackberry Storm mobile and a Nintendo DS.

Katie calls to suggest drinks in Alma de Cuba before the launch party at Chaya tonight.

1.00pm We’re already weighed under with different bags of little gifts and, after staying for a quick drink, mum decides to head home with her presents, so I catch up with the girls for some lunch at The Living Room. It’s our regular meeting point when we’re out shopping and it’s lovely to enjoy the mussels marinara washed down with a glass of Pinot Grigio, while we discuss our plans for the evening. We agree to limit ourselves to a budget of £20 to spend on presents for one another, and this year I’m really spoilt for choice as to what to buy them. Vouchers for MAC in the Metquarter would be a really nice gift for Chantal or Hollie, and perhaps a Crystal Clear spa day at 34 Rodney Street for Katie as a special relaxing treat. We’re all looking forward to the party tonight; my friend Matthew Blanchard is launching a new fashion label Guilt Edged at Chaya so it’s going to be a fantastic celebration. It’s all organic and recycled materials, so everything is really ethical and special; it should be a fantastic night.

I love to shop!

3.00pm I’m back on the hunt for presents, and Oasis has some beautiful jewel encrusted bracelets I’m thinking of buying for my girlfriends. Then it’s on to Cavern walks, only a few minutes away from Liverpool One, as no shopping trip to Liverpool is complete without stopping by at the Liverpool WAGs’ favourite, Cricket! There’s a beautiful turquoise dress in here, it would be perfect for the party tonight, but I think I’ll be putting it on the Christmas wish list for now!

I’m tempted by the spar kle at Boudoir Boutique

4.00pm For something really special, I can never resist popping into Boudoir Boutique which has some quirky and pretty items, and unique bejewelled bags. I’m sure that one of the sequined purses would be a fantastic present for my friend Hollie.

5.00pm After all that shopping, I’ve booked myself in for some pampering to prepare me for all the partying tonight. A mini facial from the Elemis Spa Pod in John Lewis is sure to refresh me for a long night ahead!

6.00pm Now it’s time to head off home and get ready with my new make up from John Lewis before meeting Mum and her friend Mitzi, who are also coming to the launch. We’re meeting up for a gorgeous dinner and drinks at Piccolino’s before heading on to catch up with the girls at Alma de Cuba and then the party at Chaya; I absolutely can’t wait!

A life in

pictures Nestled in the heart of Bold Street is a shop that’s a hive of activity and a haven of tranquillity all at once. Rennies Arts and Crafts has been trading for over 30 years now, putting a smile on the face of art lovers from near and far. Steve Rennie joined the family run business 26 years ago and soon discovered that lacking a natural talent for creating art was no hindrance to selling it; enthusiasm and passion was all it took. Interview by Marie Martin – marie@movepublishing.co.uk Photography by Tom Murphy

Rennies started from rather humble beginnings; what’s the history of the gallery? It’s a truly family run business. My father had a room at home for picture framing and my mother had another for painting and when we were teenagers, every Friday night, my brother and I spent an evening putting all of our mother’s paintings into our father’s frames ready for Saturday and Sunday when we would go off and sell them. On Saturdays we took them to the railings of Bluecoat and on Sundays we used to go to Chester, New Brighton or Southport. Once we were old enough to drive, my father used to load us up with a van full of pictures and send us off to the Lakes or Wales to place them in galleries and hotels on a commission basis. And how did you end up in Bold Street? My father took out a short-term lease on a shop at Grange Road in Birkenhead, then moved into the old Birkenhead market. Unfortunately he lost everything when it burned down and ended up trading from a caravan outside the market. He then took on the lease for 61 Bold Street and The Medici Society ran a gallery next door in 63. When Medici decided to go wholesale and sell their retail shops, we extended next door. We continued selling what they had, cards and the open edition prints and then gravitated to the more collectable works we stock today. Being a family business, were you always destined to run the gallery? Yes I think I was because I’d tried a few jobs and I was never happy. I think that was basically because I was working for other people and not particularly due to 62

the type of job I was doing. When the opportunity came up for me to join the business I was ready to settle down; I’d travelled around a bit and I’d met the girl that I was going to marry, so we moved here and I joined the family business and I’ve never looked back since. Is the success of the gallery due to your business brain or your creative eye? I don’t think it’s either, I think I’m just lucky! We found a niche in the market and grew from there. We were selling massmarket prints and discovered there were quite a lot of people in the city centre doing the same but there was a gap for specialising in the more collectable artwork. The pieces we sell are editions of around 100-150 so you know you’re not going to see it everywhere and we found that’s what people were looking for. But ultimately the business has grown largely due to the great staff we’ve got working for us. In all we’ve got around 25 staff and a lot of them have been with us for many years. They give a great service to the public and people appreciate that. I think it’s vital for a small business to give good service and I love hearing positive feedback on our staff. How difficult is it to run the gallery as a business and be subjective about the artwork you sell? When I’m buying artwork I always try to pick different types of work that will appeal to all. It’s inevitable that you’ll lean to what you like personally but that should be the aim. So we have a varied genre of artwork from landscapes to figurative. It’s all quite contemporary and by living artists. The two or three big publishers that we deal with also guide me as they’re aware of which

21 November – 4 December 2008 yourmovemagazine.com

way the trends are going. Ultimately it’s a balance between what we like, what the publishers are suggesting, and responding to what the audience are asking for. Is any of the artwork you select dictated to you? No, it’s my choice what I stock and I try to have a good mix not just of a type of artwork but of price as well, so people can buy at a level they’re happy with. We have some really collectable artwork, which can be very expensive, such as originals by Todd White, and we also have a lot of artwork by up and coming artists who people may see as an investment for the future, which is not as expensive. It’s quite natural for people buying artwork as an investment to want to buy work from an artist in the early stages of their career, when their work is affordable. And I think, especially in the current climate, more people are beginning to see art as something to invest in. Do artists approach you? We get a lot of local artists coming in hoping to display their work; I suppose we’re in a good location, so it’s an attractive gallery for artists. We have an area in the gallery for local artists and photographers and the work we display is mainly local scenes. But they’re the only artists we tend to deal with personally. Artists are trying to hide themselves away and paint maybe five or six days a week because that’s what they do and that’s what people want from them. They don’t want to be answering the phone and dealing with admin so I guess it works. How would you describe the market for art in Liverpool? The contemporary artwork we stock is selling really well. The economic situation

p55-72:Master page guide

17/11/08

16:15

Page 63

your move talent in the city

is having an effect on Bold Street as a whole. Footfall has gone down, partly due to the credit crunch and partly to Liverpool One, which has taken some custom away from Bold Street in the short term. But there are still people looking to invest in decorating their home, which is perhaps due to the economic instability. What artists have stood out to you over the years? There’s quite a few who just keep going and seem to develop from being great to even greater. Doug Hyde has a great following and Todd White, who’s fairly new to the scene, is growing in popularity at a tremendous rate. I think the fact that they produce small limited editions means that they can keep producing work and people are always waiting for the next piece to come out because they sell out really quickly. When you consider they’re selling countrywide and produce limited editions of around 195, often not everybody who wants to gets the opportunity to buy one. There are also several artists that I personally really admire such as Govinder Nazran and Rolf Harris who is a tremendous artist; he can turn his hand to anything. Do you paint? No I’ve tried and I’m completely useless. My mother tried to teach me and I ended up painting just like her. I have no imagination or talent. I’m passionate about artwork and I love the business I’m in, I wouldn’t swap it for the world, but I wouldn’t try and do it myself. And because I don’t know the techniques and how it’s done, I’m looking at it from a customer’s point of view and just thinking it’s awesome. But I don’t think it makes any difference to the work I do because I’m so enthusiastic about it, and I think that comes across to customers.

your move it’s my thing

How did you get interested in spa products? I was on holiday in Bali in August this year, when I got chatting to a really interesting couple who were staying in the same hotel, and we became good friends. Their names are Liz and Mark Warom, and they created the Virgin Vie range before they launched their own products which are called Temple Spa. They were just so passionate about what they did that it really inspired me to find out more. What was it that attracted you to the brand? I’m a believer in that what you put into your body, your diet, is really important, but your skin is your biggest organ. People don’t always think about that, but what you put on your skin makes such a difference. These products are all made from Mediterranean ingredients and they’re really gentle; and good for you like the Mediterranean diet! How have you made these products part of your lifestyle? I became a consultant for the brand on Merseyside after trying out the products in Bali, so I’ll give a class to friends or colleagues on the products so they can see them for themselves. I call it a class not a party, because it teaches you about skincare and how to use the products. I also am hoping to get more women in Merseyside interested in the brand so they can run the classes themselves as a little side business.

It’s my thing Julie West is managing director at Zest Lets, a new lettings agency in Liverpool, but in her spare time indulges her passion for high quality spa treatments, giving classes to friends and colleagues.

Contact Zest Lets on 0151 933 7033. Contact Julie for more information about Temple Spa products and her classes on 07770 452 818.

What’s the best thing about being involved in the skincare range? I think it’s that I made two great friends when I was on holiday, and now I can relax with friends and teach them about great products that I really believe in. If you’d told me six months ago that I’d be doing this then I’d have laughed! But it’s something I really enjoy. What do your friends and colleagues think about this hobby of yours? They know I’m a bit mad, running Zest Lets and AMR Recruitment and now getting interested in skincare. They’re used to me by now I think! Plus, it’s great for them because we have these classes where they can try the products and we relax and just have a really great evening. What’s your ambitions for your spa hobby? I’d really like other women on Merseyside to get involved and feel empowered to start up their own business for the skincare line. I think it could be really empowering, as it’s a nice way back into employment for some women who, perhaps, have not worked for a few years. I’d really like to talk to them and help them find the confidence to just ‘go for it’.

MOTORING

The hazard flashers are automatically activated at speeds above 40mph if the car brakes at more than seven metres per second or the ABS is activated for more than two seconds.

USED VOLKSWAGAN PASSAT VW is claiming that the new Passat's body is 57 percent stiffer than the old model. That enormous rigidity - the old car wasn't exactly floppy, either - should translate to a long and rattle-free life. The engines are all well-proven units, and the visible quality in terms of material and fit and finish is right up to VW's high standards. George Hobbs. *Model shown is the Passat R36

Fact File Model VW Passat Sport TDI Engine 1968cc, four cylinders Power 170bhp Transmission Six-speed manual Fuel 46.3mpg (combined cycle) Acceleration 0-62mph: 8.6sec Top speed 138mph

The Passat sits above the Vauxhall Vectra and Ford Mondeo in terms of outright status and prestige, but somewhere below BMW's 3-Series and Merc's C-Class. This is a considerably better car to drive than the one it replaces. That's partly down to the body's greatly improved rigidity - the stiffer a bodyshell is, the better the suspension can control wheel movements and handling behaviour. There are MacPherson struts up front with a four-link suspension at the rear, with anti-roll bars fore and aft, so it's a pretty conventional setup. The handling, though, has been transformed from vague to sharp and precise. The electro-mechanical, power-assisted steering has a real sporting feel to it. The ride quality is good, although the car can feel a bit nervous over ridges and small-frequency bumps.

As is so often the case these days, the diesel-powered variant is the best all-round performer in the range. The 140bhp Euro IV-compliant 2.0-litre turbodiesel is an ideal match for the Passat. Maximum torque of 236lb ft is developed between 1750 and 2500rpm, which means far fewer gearshifts are needed to maintain cruising speeds. And the best gearbox to go for is the brilliant DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox), with its dualclutch setup. Basically, the DSG can be driven as a conventional automatic, or as a manual sequential-shift 'box with gearchanges effected through a nudge of the gearshift. Once again, it's all of that low-rev torque that makes the 1.9 TDi feel so much more responsive than the entry-level 115bhp 1.6-litre direct injection petrol engine, even if the petrol engine claims a quicker 0-62mph sprint. The 150bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine, another direct-injection unit, offers less outright performance than the 140bhp TDi unit, let alone the strong 170bhp 2.0 TDI, but does offer petrolheads a free-revving alternative to the diesel's relatively low-rev 'wall'. The Passat now uses an LED light system for brake and indicator lights. These have the advantage of activating slightly quicker than conventional bulb lights, as well as having a longer service life. Also, the hazard flashers are automatically activated at speeds above 40mph if the car brakes at more than seven metres per second or the ABS is activated for more than two seconds. The flagship performance model is the 250bhp 3.2 V6 petrol unit, however, which has the FSI direct-injection technology, and comes with the DSG 'box and VW's 4Motion four-wheel drive system. It's smooth and quiet - and very, very quick for a heavy family car in this class, doing 0-60mph in just 6.9 seconds. Whilst it doesn't quite have the handling finesse of, say, a 5-Series, it's a superb motorway cruiser, having more of an emphasis on comfort. A great car to be driven in, if not an enthusiast's drive.

your move table talk

I’m very much of the belief that you should keep in touch with your clients.

TABLE TALK BY WILL THORNE

Lucy Oliver interviews Richard Griffiths at Oddfellows Richard Griffiths is one of the directors at the Liverpool franchise of Martin & Co. letting agents; one of 150 offices in the UK. Richard and the team have been operating from their Woolton office in the southern suburbs of the city for 12 months now, where the business has grown and flourished beyond all expectation. We meet for lunch at Oddfellows in Woolton Village, just across from the office, where lunch and dinner is produced with only locally sourced and seasonal produce and where the menu is frequently updated to include winter ingredients to tempt the palate. Richard’s background in property finance and his team member’s credentials in property meant the new firm was an attractive candidate for a Martin & Co. franchise, which covers the whole of the UK. The Woolton team offers a full property management service and after sales care, including rent collection, repairs, maintenance and renovations. “Martin & Co has an excellent reputation across the UK, so when people are relocating or landlords from other cities are looking for property in Liverpool, they’ll come to us because they know the level of service they’ll receive. For our clients, we use an independently approved inventory clerk, which is becoming recognised increasingly as more and more important in a thriving

lettings market. We’re also recognised as an Investor in People, so our staff have a full range of opportunities to progress their careers and personal development.” Oddfellows offers a tempting selection of lunch dishes, from steak burgers with tomato and rocket salad served, to classic fish and chips in a homemade batter. To start, we both opt for soup of the day which is homemade pea and ham, and which arrives in an espresso portion; a cute spin on the cuppa soup. Based in south Liverpool, Martin & Co also caters for a market where tastes have changed and quality is in demand. The firm offers its services to landlords with properties across south Liverpool as well as the city centre, covering everything from apartments to family homes, and has plans to expand in spring next year. Richard tells me: “We’re hoping to open a city centre branch to cover lettings and our full range of services for north Liverpool. We’ve already let a diverse range of properties in our first year, exceeding the expectations we were given. Now we want to do even better. “With lettings, people sometimes think they know what they would like, but when they actually look around a property of that description they realise that it’s not for them. By talking to them, you can work out what it

is that they do want, and meet their real needs. We have a website which is always up to date and I believe in keeping on top of ’phonecalls and paperwork.” Our main courses of steak burgers and fish and chips arrive in plentiful portions with substantial side orders of home cooked potato wedges and square-cut chips. For Richard, it’s equally the quality of the service that makes the difference: “For our anniversary of opening. we’ll be offering a rental guarantee product to landlords, where we cover them for up to five months of unpaid rent. I’m very much of the belief that you should keep in touch with your clients, and for us that’s the tenant and the landlord, and be there to help them let the property or to find a tenant for it. If a property needs work before it can be let, then it’s important to inform the landlord straight away so there’s no revenue lost. If you provide a good service, then you earn a good reputation, and it’s always nice when people come to us from a personal recommendation.” For the future of the lettings market here, and of the city’s growth, he’s equally positive: “We’ve let and re-let some properties recently with just one or two days of a void period. The year as a whole has been significant for Liverpool, and people will move here to take advantage of the new opportunities and the growth will benefit us all. The pressure is on for us at Martin & Co. to become a market leader; but we’re ready and ambitious to meet that challenge.” Telephone Martin & Co on 0151 428 6922 or email liverpoolsouth@martinco.com. Book a table at Oddfellows on 0151 428 9327.

HOPE FOR HOMEGROWN TALENT Based in Liverpool Hope University’s Deanery of Arts and Humanities, the Cornerstone Festival forms a major part of the autumn cultural calendar in Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations. Now in its eighth year the festival remains true to its ethos of showcasing the brightest of newly created work in the fields of dance, comedy, visual arts and music to name but a few. The festival this year largely focuses on trans-Atlantic cultural links that exist between Liverpool and New York City. Some impressive events include a first ever performance outside the US of kinetic programme “The Only Moving Thing”, to be performed by the Grammy Award winning Eighth Blackbird on Friday November 21, at St. George’s Hall. Closer to home, a collection of work by the Liverpool artist Adrian Henri is to be exhibited in the university’s Grace room; the collection is largely focused on Henri’s love of foreign locations, of which New York was one. For the more hands on festival enthusiast, a battle of the bands is scheduled for the November 27 with an invitation open to “all bands and artists”. Apply online at www.myspace.com/ conrnerstonefestivalbattle) for the chance to win a slot on the festival’s first live band night. For more information on how to catch some of these unique events visit www.hope.ac.uk/cornerstone/festival.

CHILL OUT THIS CHRISTMAS Simon Howes, co-ordinator of the Merseyside CALMzone says: “According to a recent survey, 1 in 20 people considers Christmas to be very stressful indeed. When you add up the combined hassle and frustration that comes from the searching and paying for presents, trying to manage family relationships and the pressure to have a picture perfect Christmas day, along with all the trimmings, you can see why!”Character favourites of cosmopolitans and bellinis are still available, while a ‘Sex and the City of Culture’ cocktail has been specially created.

MUSIC WEEK PULLS IN THE CROWDS

PLAN AHEAD

This year’s Liverpool Music week has officially been the most successful ever. In another Capital of Culture triumph the record breaking 55,000 people turning out to watch the plethora of home-grown talent. The North West’s favourite winter festival saw major backing from main partners MTV and EDC raising a profile that was already aided by the imminent MTV Europe Music Awards taking place in the Liverpool Arena; just five minutes away from Liverpool Music Week’s more modest (but no less cool) host venue, Bumper on Hardman Street. Split between smaller venues hosting free gigs and the larger establishments putting on ticketed events, the balance was achieved where headline acts such as Dizzee Rascal, Vampire Weekend and Goldfrapp could front main events whilst midweek crowds were still entertained in the non stop gigs taking place in pubs and clubs lucky enough to get the MTV banner in their bar. The result was an efficient and streamlined music festival that saw more acts staged than ever before in Liverpool Music Week’s eight day programme.

Don’t keep Christmas in your head. Get it down on paper. Write down your list of things to do, just stick to the essentials and make a plan with cut off points so you can avoid a last minute rush. Release the present pressure There are lots of alternatives to battling with the crowds in the high street, online shopping can enable you to reduce the hassle and time it takes plus you can compare prices. Also, don’t feel the pressure to spend lots of cash; we’re all feeling the crunch so keep it simple and fun!

EASY ON THE BOOZE Alcohol dehydrates you and makes your liver work overtime. Drinking water hydrates every part of the body and brain and helps you cope better with stressful situations. If you do like a Christmas tipple, try alternating your drinks and reduce your risk of a hangover!

GET OFF THE SOFA ANOTHER LEVEL FOR LIVERPOOL ART Tate Liverpool is to host a groundbreaking exhibition from 16 Dec that caters for the taste of people from all across the city by showing the types art that Liverpudlians stated they’d like to see. Ideas and proposals taken from local residents were put to fourteen artists and artists’ groups who will compile a selection of work that make up ‘The Fifth Floor: Ideas Taking Space”. Internationally renowned artists from China, Canada, Netherlands and Germany will all be contributing to the display and some multicultural influences should be expected. Pieces like Pawel Althamer’s football orientated sculpture involve collaborated involvement from both Liverpool FC and Polish Club Legia Warsaw. ‘Fifth Floor’ will be the topic of a comprehensive book, published by the Liverpool University Press and featuring contributions by participants as well as artists, so watch this space.

When you’re stressed, being active immediately makes you feel better. Go for a walk or a bike ride. This will burn off stress hormones and release feel-good endorphins. New year, new opportunities Draw a line under everything that was 2008 and dream some dreams for 2009. It’s amazing what can be achieved if you set yourself some goals, so take some time out to think about what you want to do and change in 2009. For any info, advice or support you can call CALM on free and in confidence on 0800 58 58 58. The line is open on Saturday through to Tuesday, between 5pm and midnight or check out there website: www.thecalmzone.net

Hair Liverpool THE PREEN BY TONI&GUY

The cut Every year we produce a collection of cuts and colours which are eagerly awaited by our clients and the rest of the hairdressing industry. We educate more hairdressers than any other company in the world so, it’s a big responsibility. We HAVE to get it right. This season’s hair is stronger with solid baselines a rainbow of colour and high high shine. The whole collection is called The flux and this one has proved an unexpected hit - We call it “The preen”. To achieve the look Firstly you need hair in A1 condition. As it’s a straight style your hair also needs to be the right texture. Curly hair could be cut like this but would probably never look like it ever again, so don’t give yourself more hard work than you need. Be realistic and take your stylists honest advice. Who would it suit? Lets be honest not everyone! This is a very graphic shape and the colour pallet is quite out there. Remember though, the cat walk is always the influence for more commercial looks that invariably end up in the high streets shops and hair is exactly the same. This is an IMAGE and we would never expect our client to exactly copy what we produce for our window pictures. As haircuts this year are much sharper it might encourage someone with soft edges to go for a stronger baseline or a flat brown haired client to incorporate some slates raspberry or even navy in their next colour change. As with all fashion don’t let it dictate to you but do try be open to an influence or an idea. If you don’t you could be stuck with the same haircut or colour for the next ten years. Which is less of a “Preen” and more of a rut!

Jonathan Kane, 32 business developer

Kate Arnot, 28 rep at chartered accountants

How did you construct this look? ‘The coat is from Tommy Hilfiger on Regent Street in London, (where I shop quite often). My sister bought me this shirt as a present, the trousers are from Next and the tie is from T.M.Lewin. The jumper is from Reiss and the shoes are from Office.’

What’s your favourite current fashion trend? ‘It depends whether its daytime or evening, and on the specific occasion, but I’m loving the recent eveningwear in magazines for cocktail parties and nights out on the town. I would usually head to Warehouse or Oasis to find the best outfit and top it off with a flashy bag. Black is always a strong colour which can be worn with anything but at the moment red and purple seem to be making a big impression.’

The key item here is definitely Jonathan’s smart, classic coat, a wardrobe necessity at this time of year for the gents. This luxurious shade of dark navy means he really stands out from the crowd!

Style Counsel On a bright, autumn day Your Move headed to the heart of the business district in Liverpool’s city centre to track down striking, corporate attire.

Steve Cook, 25 company director Where did you shop for this outfit and which clothing items can’t you live without? ‘My suit is from Zara Man at Liverpool One, the shirt and tie are Next and I found the shoes at Sole Trader in Chester. I really enjoy hitting the gym and being active during my free time so I wear a lot of fitted t-shirts and hoodies when working out. For a treat I’d go to Reiss to see what’s on offer.’

Lucy Cheesman, 22 legal executive Who in the public eye gets it right every time? ‘Victoria Beckham is dead glamorous and always impeccably groomed! Plus she usually wears killer heels! Without doubt she influences my style.’ Lucy is wearing every girl’s must have item, ‘the little black dress’ from Warehouse. Her fantastic patent heels are extremely eyecatching and a very recent purchase from Kurt Geiger. Her style is topped off nicely with red nail polish from Number 7.

GO British Marya McCann samples some seasonal fare

Earlier this year Gordon Ramsay accused many British restaurants of relying heavily on food which has travelled too far and across too many seasons. It may have been a massive stone thrown from a glass house, but it got Britain talking about how, and where, our food is produced. A small number of Liverpool restaurants have served seasonal and local food, consistently, for years. Long before Gordon Ramsay made his comments, 60 Hope Street had established close links with farmers in Cumbria for its beef and pork. This month the menu contains enough winter staples (parsnips, butternut squash, pumpkins, pears, beetroot…) to induce a longing for dark winter nights – the colder the better. Even the names of the dishes compel you to book a table, get dressed up and enjoy an evening inside the impressive dining room (high ceilings, soft lighting and a mixture of large and small tables). The room caters both for big groups and, with cosy intimate seating at each corner, couples too. The view from our table, out of the window, was like a widescreen out-take from Terence Davies’ film. Vividly portraying Liverpool’s past and present, the cobbled street over the road and exquisite Georgian architecture act as a backdrop for the students, theatre goers and residents passing by. Anyway,

60 HOPE STREET Restaurant Bistro Bar 57 Liverpool, L1 9BZ, 0151 707 6060 www.60hopestreet.com back to the food. Scanning the starters we were intrigued by braised pig’s cheek with pea whack and tempted by Carlingford Lough oysters, but finally decided on two other ones. From the early doors menu (3 courses - £18.50 including a bottle of wine) butternut squash and goats cheese risotto and à la carte, quail sausage roll with pumpkin chutney. The risotto was perfect in texture, the squash firm enough to bite through yet soft enough to blend with the cheese and rice. The singular taste of fresh sage worked really well too, cutting through the other flavours.

Being fans of the local bakery we had to go for the upmarket version of the shop’s best seller the sausage roll. The idea was simple and effective; by swapping unidentifiable pork for the really meaty and flavoursome taste of quail and tomato sauce for pumpkin chutney the result was something only faintly reminiscent of a shop-bought one. The pastry was delicate yet bound tightly enough around the shredded meat to make each bite substantial and the chutney was sweet, almost on the verge of caramelised. Main courses like lemon sole

with celeriac puree and shrimp antiboise and crispy pork belly with deep fried langoustines, carrot and cardamom foam and sticky trotter jus certainly merge the familiar with the unfamiliar. But to give us even more to talk about before our next course we were treated to amuse bouche. Scallop, pork belly, pear puree and an espresso cup of frothy wild mushroom arrived on dainty marble slabs, combining simplicity within a multitude tastes and textures. With winter comfort food in mind our mains stayed on the meaty side: roast beef olives with root vegetable hash and pepper sauce and Cumbrian venison with croquettes and steamed red cabbage. The vegetable hash with the beef olives was lightly curried and the potato croquettes accompanying the venison hid a fluffy surprise of black pudding. Thinly sliced fillet of Venison melted in the mouth and tasted so lean and light that I can only assume the animal had enjoyed a full and active life in a Cumbrian forest before ending up on a plate at 60 Hope Street. Throughout the service was fantastic; attentive with advice whenever we requested it. The Argentinean Malbec (£14.95) for example, was recommended and was as enjoyable as was promised. A dessert like sticky toffee pudding with toffee apple ice cream seemed so apt a choice for winter that as we shared it I wondered about having dinner here throughout the seasons. I decided, then, I will definitely have to return.

Winter highlights from Panoramic’s menu this month include suckling pig with celeriac and pickled apples and beef fillet on the bone with foie gras and truffle mash. With tables at the weekend booked up until the new year, a great way to sample the food - and view - is to book midweek for the lunch and evening three-course menu (£17.50.)

When asked to highlight a dish from this month’s menu head chef, Maurice Watts, was quick to recommend brick fired chump of lamb with Parmesan glazed polenta, creamed onions with peas and rocket.

The Side Door has seasonal ingredients that will really warm you up when you visit. Included on the winter menu is roast Goosenagh duck breast with red wine shallots, sage and mustard mash and spinach and pan-fried calves’ liver with sweet sherry onions and caramelised garlic potatoes.

FILM

THEATRE CINDERELLA Liverpool Empire, 11 Dec – 4 Jan.

MADAGASCAR 2: ESCAPE FROM AFRICA Madagascar returns to the big screen this December three years after it left audiences rolling in the aisles with it’s combination of witty script, superb animation and a list of reputable comedy actors, all lending their voices to the most loveable bunch of zoo fugitives since ‘Free Willy’. The comedic status quo has been maintained with the actors from last time around returning to their familiar roles; Ben Stiller (Alex the Lion), Chris Rock (Marty the Zebra) and David Schwimmer (Melman the Giraffe) are trying to find their way back home to New York with a plan that is hatched and ultimately foiled by a particular group of militant penguins. This time round the story relocates to Africa, still a long way from Manhattan. Fortunately the loss of Madagascar as a location doesn’t spell the end for some of the original’s most charming characters. Sacha Baron Cohen

continues his hysterical portrayal of Julien the crazy lemur king who decides to accompany the New Yorkers on their attempted journey home along with his assistant Maurice, played by Cedric the Entertainer. New inclusions to the already impressive cast include Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am whilst Alec Baldwin and Bernie Mac also appear as two competitive African lions that react rather differently to the appearance of their estranged relative Alex, the former star attraction in his New York home. The development of an original and entertaining concept promises an enjoyable viewing experience for fans of the first film, whilst the introduction of all the new characters one would expect to find in an African nature reserve ensures new lines, new laughs and even new songs to keep the family quoting over Christmas and into the new year.

As the clock strikes midnight on this, Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year, what better way to ring in 2009 than with that most traditional of festive pursuits, the Christmas pantomime? Our fairy tale year comes to a climax at the Empire where Liverpool’s dramatists are ready to shine brighter than any other this year, in a scouse-spangled production of the all-time classic fairy-tale, Cinderella. Some smart casting has served, not only to glitz up this year’s production but is also going some way to display Liverpool’s transformation from one time ugly sister to belle of the ball. Cilla Black and Jennifer Ellison come together in a happy rejoining of leading ladies old and new. Bringing banter as well as beauty, Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother are joined on stage by hapless butler Buttons (played by the far from hapless Les Dennis) and, proving we’re not just a pretty face around here, the Ugly Sisters played by radio favourite Pete Price and ‘Brick up the Mersey Tunnel’ actor Roy Brandon. Funded by panto production heavyweights Family First Entertainment, Cinderella promises to be a glamorous affair this year (as if Cilla didn’t make sure of that already), and this timeless story is sure to be told with all the punch-lines a Liverpool Christmas show demands.

Live music in Liverpool

Kings of Leon Liverpool Arena, 8 December If securing the coveted pyramid stage headline slot at this year’s Glastonbury festival wasn’t enough to confirm this Nashville family four piece’s ascension into to the indie stratosphere; their

imminent stadium tour, set to be sold out all over the country is a better status indicator: Kings of Leon are massive. The well publicised story about three sons of a travelling Pentecostal Church preacher in the deep south; recruiting a cousin and being launched into rock stardom, is now, happily, less recounted as the boys have become men and the music too has enjoyed a similar maturation period. Moving further from their raucous 2003 debut ‘Youth and

Young Manhood’, the latest offering ‘Only by the Night’ has earned Kings of Leon plaudits across wider audiences seeing the first single from the album enter the UK charts at number one. With four albums under their belt, a host of indie anthems and now a stage show to bring it all to the massive following they have acquired, the Kings of Leon’s first visit to the Liverpool Arena on 8 December is one not to be missed.

Coldplay Liverpool Arena, 7 December Indie rock four piece of our very own, Coldplay will also be making their debut at the Arena on 7 December. Touring their latest album, ‘Viva la Vida’, Chris Martin’s anthemic songwriting style and encapsulating stage presence has made Coldplay’s live shows a hallmark of their success.

GO dance The Peacock The Peacock has arrived (not the feathered kind) but a cool new establishment for eating, drinking and dancing. It’s only been open for a few months but this lovely old building has been transformed into a warm, friendly hangout. The music played upstairs by Chris and Joe is a collection of house, indie and electro tunes. Joe has been playing cool tunes on the Liverpool scene for some years with an enviable music collection. The bar is open until 2am with two outdoor areas, one of them a roof terrace complete with bbq. The bar recently gave away a rave bottle of ‘Havana Maximo’ Rum complete with handmade teak case as part of a competition. One of only 12 in the

country and at £250 a shot, it was not for the faint hearted! The overall vibe is warm and yet cool at the same time. My Favourite COMEDIAN Though it’s a bit of a cliché I think I’d have to say that Bill Hicks is one of my favourite comedians, though he’s not someone who influences me directly. I really like Harry Hill as a more contemporary comedian; he’s a very funny man. ARTIST I like a lot of local music and one of my favourite all time acts is Echo and the Bunnymen. I’m a good friend of Ian McCulloch’s, I’ll definitely be going to see them at the Liverpool Arena.

FILM I think comedy-wise ‘The Producers’ has got to be one of the funniest films that I’ve ever seen, I mean the proper 1960s one with Gene Wilder… not the modern version with Matthew Broderick.

ACTOR The Liverpool actor Andrew Schofield is my favourite actor. I’ve had the chance to work with him and I just think he’s brilliant. Other than that I guess Robert De Niro, I especially like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, films like that.

LIVERPOOL PUB I’d better say The Slaughterhouse. I’ve got a Saturday local, but I don’t know if I should tell everyone where that is! The Slaughterhouse is going to be a great place to be of a weekend, we’ll be hosting a real mix of talent from all over the country and so there will be a chance to catch local talent as well as those on the national circuit, it’s an exciting time.

CAPITAL OF CULTURE EVENT I’ve been really impressed by all the goings on and the effort that the city has made over 2008. I was especially touched by the concert held in memory of Rhys Jones at the Liverpool Arena. I think everybody involved should be commended for hosting something so touching at what little cost they did; it showed a real sense of community within the city.

NEIL FITZMAURICE Comedian Neil Fitzmaurice, just a few years back, formed one part of the most formidable trio in British comedy as a writing partner to Peter Kay and Dave Spikey. After gaining national recognition with six part mock-umentary ‘That Peter Kay Thing’ and subsequent success in ‘Phoenix Nights’, Neil is back in Liverpool with a new film in the pipeline and a comedy venture that will see Liverpool’s Slaughterhouse become the hottest comedy ticket in town every Friday and Saturday night.

BOOK I like anything by Stephen King, he’s a really talented writer, if I was forced to choose one? Probably ‘The Talisman’.

RED OR BLUE I’m a boyhood red and still go to all the matches I can. My favourite player has to be Steven Gerrard, he’s right up there with Kenny Dalglish for me as one of the Liverpool all-time legends, I think history will remember him as the greatest player ever to wear the red shirt. THING TO DO TO RELAX Just being around my family. I’ve got four boys and spending time with them is one of my favourite things to do. I can literally just be sitting on the couch, watching TV with my kids and I’m content, even if they’re bouncing off the walls!
