Top Liverpool greenspaces to live around

It goes without saying these days that Sefton Park is among Liverpool’s most popular areas to live and enjoy the great outdoors. The historic park and events hotspot is, however, just one of the city’s diverse and character-filled destinations which can hugely enhance the lifestyles of those on the doorstep. Here’s our pick of glorious Liverpool greenspaces worth setting up home nearby.

Croxteth Hall and Country Park

Croxteth Hall and Country Park’s Walled Garden

Where? Muirhead Avenue East, Liverpool, L12 BEST FOR

Green-fingered enthusiasts and those looking to combine rural life with city living.

What’s there? A hub for community groups, volunteering opportunities, historic attractions and high profile events, North Liverpool’s Croxteth Hall and Country Park has lots to offer if you’re living a stone’s throw away. Squeezing exercise into your schedule and budgeting for gym memberships needn’t be an issue thanks to the park’s weekly organised 5K Parkrun at 9am every Saturday and activities such as the Cycle for Health events on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Local residents of all ages can also get to grips with horse riding as the 500-acre site is home to the well-established, family-run Croxteth Park Riding Centre; and Croxteth Park Farm further enhances a hint of rural life in the city as it enables visitors to get up close to animals. 8

And if your own outdoor space is limited or lacking in gardening potential then fear not, as this is a park that welcomes a helping hand. For local residents with green fingered enthusiasm, or those looking to enjoy the much talked about holistic benefits of the activity, the Croxteth Park Volunteer Group (CPVG) maintains the popular greenspace, which features a Victorian Walled Garden housing the city’s historic botanical collection with stunning blooms like the jade vine on show. A recent social media post by Croxteth Hall hails “fresh air, exercise, green fingered skills, a cup of tea – and the joy of helping in these surroundings” as positives of lending a hand in the picturesque space. Meanwhile the site’s Grade II*-listed country house, formerly home to the Earls of Sefton who

founded the Grand National, could be on the up after Liverpool City Council recently announced plans to breathe new life into the estate with a strategy to strengthen its future and maximise its appeal. A new food, drink and hospitality provision and more frequent events such as concerts, seasonal fairs and artisan markets are among the proposals for Croxteth Hall and Country Park, after the local authority decided to keep hold of the destination rather than hand it over to an external operator. A major family event is already in the pipeline for 3-5 August, highlighting the park’s credentials as a popular location for large-scale goings on as the BBC stages its first ever outdoor kids’ festival with the CBBC Summer Social.

HOME

Stanley Park Where? Walton Lane, Liverpool, L4 BEST FOR

Those seeking a healthy, active lifestyle

What’s there? Sandwiched between the famous stadiums of Liverpool and Everton football clubs, this is a city space that needs little introduction. However, there’s so much more to Stanley Park than surroundings that have played host to landmark sporting moments. Whether you’re setting up home in an established nearby North Liverpool community or eyeing the new homes that are helping to shape a revamped Anfield as part of its ongoing regeneration, this Green Flag and Green Heritage award winning park has plenty to boost your lifestyle. There’s no park neighbour too young to take advantage of Stanley Park’s health and fitness benefits, as the greenspace is home to Liverpool’s first Junior Parkrun – a free weekly 2K run for four to 14year-olds. If you prefer strolling to sprinting, Breckfield and North Everton Community Centre (BNENC) uses the park for its regular community walk which local residents can book on to, and the group also arranges longer walks periodically. Plus the bandstand outside the striking Isla Gladstone has been playing host to free outdoor yoga classes on Tuesday mornings now that the warmer months are underway thanks to Liverpool’s wellbeing collaborators Positivity Inc. And the scenic lake within the Grade II*-listed greenspace makes a beautiful centrepiece to admire whether you’re embarking on an energising group activity or simply enjoying some time outdoors. As with all of Liverpool’s park lakes, an angling permit is required if you fancy taking up fishing there. If all that exercise leaves you in need of a pit stop, Kemp’s Bistro in Stanley Park’s ornate Isla Gladstone glasshouse is on hand to serve up home-cooked breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas and treats. The eatery is also a hive of social activity for tiny local residents, as it hosts weekly Story Time sessions for under-fives and their grown-ups.

O erspool Park and Promenade

Families & admirers of the waterfront

What’s there? Set up home near South Liverpool’s Otterspool Park and you’ll have the city’s famous waterfront close by to admire without the hustle and bustle of more central tourist-filled locations. The sprawling greenspace overlooking the Mersey, along with its wooded areas and promenade path, makes for a scenic route for local strollers, cyclists and those with four-legged friends to regularly walk. Thanks to its exposure to the windy waterfront, the park’s vast lawn has also become a favourite for kite flyers to frequently flock to, with the Northern Kite Group’s ‘Otty Flyers’ holding their regular meet-ups at the site. Even if you don’t fancy trying the flying yourself, the activity makes for a spectacle which only enhances Otterspool as a great Mersey viewpoint. Younger nearby residents won’t be bored with the park and promenade in close proximity, as it features attractions including a skatepark and the action-packed Otterspool Adventure Centre. There’s a handy café for family-friendly socialising close to home and parents can get little ones out of the house for some stress-free fun in the site’s wooden play area, which is free to enter alongside a host of other paid for activities. The Interview

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

Croxteth vet Rob Pope has smashed records and raised thousands for charities in a mammoth adventure partly inspired by Forrest Gump. The ambitious runner made big sacrifices and tested his fitness to cross America five times before declaring himself, in the words of the film character, “pretty tired. As Rob continues his mission to reach a fundraising total as gigantic as his achievement, he shares his biggest struggles, special moments and future challenges.

p01-20_p03-12 21/05/2018 15:06 Page 15

PEOPLE

How did you come up with the idea to follow in the footsteps of Forrest Gump? It had been developing over a long period of time. I’d wanted to run across America for ages so it was basically me wanting to make a difference that made it get a lot bigger. You’ve been raising money for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Peace Direct. Why did you choose those charities? The WWF is [close to my heart because of my work as a vet], but I chose both because Forrest is asked in the film whether he’s running for women’s rights, world peace, the homeless, the environment and animals, and between those two charities they cover everything. Were you a big fan of ‘Forrest Gump’ or did it just work for the challenge? It’s a good film but it definitely wasn’t in my top five favourite films beforehand. I’ve watched the running scene hundreds of times now but only because I needed to do the research to make sure things were right. You want people to engage with it but I’m not walking around now in Nike Cortez trainers and a cap asking people to listen to me! What was the total mileage once you’d completed the fi h and final leg? The final figure was 15,607 in 422 days of running, which is an average of 37 miles a day. You’d previously run marathons but how did you prepare for something as big as this? I just went! You didn’t see Forrest in the gym for weeks before, doing his press-ups. You can’t prepare for something like this, it takes too long. If you’re devoting 10 hours a day to training, you may as well just be making progress and start off down the road. So did you allocate a set amount of time to complete each leg or was it a case of finishing when you finish? With the first one I just had an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) and 90 days to do it so it was very much constrained by that. Then there was a delay while waiting for my proper Visa. I went back out in the January for almost six months which is the maximum you can spend. I also wanted to finish at a cool place and I could have gone on a bit further and ended up in the middle of Minnesota but I thought it’d be good to end up in Chicago at the end of that leg - I wanted to see U2 there on 4 June. It was Nick Cave in Detroit on 3 June and U2 in Chicago on the 4 June so that was cool.

What was the toughest element of the challenge? Just the low level stress because I was selffunding it. We didn’t want to self-fund it, we didn’t intend to set it out as this big noble gesture but it was the fact that sponsors never came in and I was determined to finish for the charities, so I was basically wondering how to make ends meet, both in America and at home. Also, it was where I was going to stay that night when I was on my own, what I was going to be eating, and waking up that next day knowing I had a load of miles to do but nothing was certain. That was probably the hardest bit. How did you juggle it with your everyday life and work as a vet? I jacked the job in, and for a good chunk of the first half my girlfriend had been out with me. For the other half I was on my own. It was a case of having to keep in touch whenever, and then [my girlfriend] was pregnant for the last bit of the challenge so I was a bit stressed that she was coping, but she did OK. What was the reaction like in America, and how aware were people of what you were doing? It built and I’d get decent local media coverage. In the lesser populated states the press would generally be more interested because you were more of a novelty. The press in San Francisco didn’t care and I didn’t get a sniff off anyone there which was really disappointing - that was the point where I was out of money completely and thought surely if any sponsors are going to happen it’s going to be in San Francisco because it’s a really healthy, outward-looking town. A GoFundMe page was set up after the three legs but I didn’t have any sponsors who backed the run, it was me. You ran this year’s London Marathon too. How did this factor into your challenge? I did Manchester, Brighton and London in three weeks. It was about keeping up the profile because I came back for the baby being born but I didn’t want to go off the radar for three weeks. I’m glad I did the London marathon because it got a lot of good exposure and that helps the charities. Didn’t you break a record for the fastest runner in a film costume too? That’s the one, and WWF said its website traffic pretty much doubled that weekend. Is the fundraising still continuing now that you’ve completed the run? Yes, this is what I’m doing now. We’re doing the ‘Gump Challenge’, which is like the ice bucket challenge, so the thing is to do a line or scene from the film and then donate and nominate two more people to do it. We’ve got a Facebook page for people to post videos. How have you been readjusting to life now the challenge is over? I landed on the Monday and I worked on the Tuesday. I just get on with things.

I miss bits. Because of having the baby and becoming engaged recently, people are being nice and still talking about the run so I don’t think I’ve got that degree of separation yet. It might be when life’s a bit rubbish that I start going ‘oh I wish I was running again’, but if I never do anything like that again I don’t think I’ll have any regrets of how I should have gone further or anything like that. Will you continue running marathons? I’ve got Berlin in September so I want to train properly for that, and I’m also running the Marathon Des Sables race in the Sahara Desert. They call it the world’s toughest foot race but in reality it’s probably not. The world’s biggest tough foot race is probably a better way to describe it, but I’m quite happy that if they call it the world’s toughest foot race then I can call it that and everyone can go ‘oh my god, he did the hardest race in the world!’. I’m going to have that as a mini focus. What’s your highlight of running across America? I always go back to running through Joshua Tree National Park – that was incredible, listening to U2’s ‘Joshua Tree’ the whole way. I ran to Death Valley, where the joshua tree from the album cover is, and I don’t think anybody’s done that journey on foot before. It was a really good pilgrimage and then seeing [the band] in Chicago was a nice story within a story. Reaching the oceans was always pretty special, especially the second which was probably my favourite. They were all pretty different and for the first in Santa Monica, my girlfriend Nadine was there along with a big solid group of mates and it was a pretty fun night afterwards. For the second I just had one mate there who’d ridden the last five days with me on his bike, and a couple of locals. That was a nice quiet night but really emotional, having completed that leg on my own and getting to the end. The third one was just me and my girlfriend in Oregon at the beach and we went back to the town the next day where I ran the Oregon State 10K Championships and won it. I don’t include that run and the Boston Marathon in the official 15,607-mile total, but if I were to count those and the three marathons here it actually makes 600 marathons. I reached the fourth ocean on my own, on sunset, on the last day before I flew home so it was a pretty satisfactory outcome, and then the final finish wasn’t an ocean but that was incredible. There were about 30 people running that final bit with me, and probably another 100 at the finish watching or cheering along the way. I proposed to my girlfriend as well so I’ll never forget that moment.

HIGHspec BATHROOMS I can plan and design your bathroom from start to finish! From a budget design to the most elaborate you’ll find, I have over 30 years experience with quality and reliability as standard – not as a hidden extra. David Glover

Reducing the Inheritance Tax burden Q. My husband and I have assets worth about £950,000 between us. This is made up of our main house worth £450,000 and a few mortgage free buy to let properties worth about £500,000. We keep on being advised by friends to sell some of the buy to let properties and then gift the proceeds to our grown up children to reduce our Inheritance Tax (IHT) bill. The buy to let properties are worth a lot more than we paid for them, so there will be some Capital Gains Tax to pay if we sell now, but we have been told that this way we will save IHT at 40%. Is this correct?

A. In a word, no. There have been some relatively recent changes to IHT which mean that couples in your situation should review their tax arrangements before gifting funds. Currently each individual has an IHT allowance, or “nil-rate band”, of £325,000. This amount is transferable between spouses and civil partners, giving a couple effectively a nil-rate band of £650,000 before tax at 40% is due on their estates.

If you are not in a position for a complete makeover, its no problem. I also supply and fit a standard bathroom site in one day for just £610! Straight swap. Done, dusted and guaranteed plus all rubbish taken away.

HIGHspec BATHROOMS NOBODY DOES IT BETTER!

Up until recently, to reduce IHT, couples could sell assets such as second properties and gift the proceeds to their adult children. Provided they survived 7 years from the date of the gift, the amounts would eventually be removed from their estates thus reducing the potential IHT bill. So in some cases paying the Capital Gains Tax was worthwhile to avoid an even higher IHT bill. The good news is that for many people this thinking no longer applies. The recent changes mean that from 2018, individuals who die with a main residence in their estate each get an additional £125,000 “residence nil-rate band” (RNRB). This will increase to £150,000 in 2019/20 and to £175,000 in 2020/21. These additional allowances will eventually bring a couple’s effective overall IHT nil-rate band to £1million. To claim the RNRB you must own a property that has been the family home, and it must be passed direct to descendants.

We deliver when you’re in Beds, bunks, wardrobes, sofas, dining sets, sideboards, chests of drawers, TV stands, garden furniture and much more!

The important point is that the Capital Gains Tax slate is wiped clean on death, and assets can be passed on to beneficiaries at their current market value. So where the value of your main home and your other assets is likely to be below the £1m threshold and, providing you both survive for a few more years, your estates should be capable of being passed on to each other and then to your descendants inheritance tax free. To maximise the benefit of the new residential nil-rate band, you must both jointly own the principal private residence, which requires both husband and wife to be on the property title documents. As with all things tax, it really does make sense to obtain good professional advice.

Liverpool leads the way at the NatWest British LGBT Awards in London Liverpool played a key role at the NatWest British LGBT Awards 2018, with leading local lawyer Emma Carey and comedian John Bishop leading the way in equality and inclusion. Daniel Hughes (PR), Dawn Butler (shadow minister for equality) and Emma Carey (MSB)

Ms Carey, managing partner of fast-growing MSB Solicitors, was shortlisted in the Corporate Ally of the Year category for her work to promote diversity in the firm, which employs more than 100 people across three offices in Liverpool. She didn’t win the award - the accolade went to Peter Madden of Arcadis - but Emma firmly established MSB’s credentials as one of the most progressive law firms in the country. However, John Bishop did win the Celebrity Ally of the Year Award and gave an a powerful and moving speech about his own gay son. “I was so pleased to be nominated. I brought my whole family, my wife and my three sons who I love and I am massively proud of,” he told the audience in an emotional address. The Liverpool connection to the LGBT Awards goes even further still as developer and hotel operator, Signature Living, was one of the event’s headline sponsors and Daniel Hughes, a leading PR professional in Liverpool,

was involved in organising the event at Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London. Emma Carey said she is proud to manage a firm where all staff, irrespective of sexuality, gender, race or social circumstance, feel supported, included and empowered to reach their full potential. She explained: “We all, as individuals, have something unique to offer to the workplace and to the world, and we recognise that at MSB. We appreciate the value of having a multi-faceted, multi-skilled and diverse workforce and the benefits it presents for our clients. “I do not view equality and diversity as a business ‘policy’ – a set of rules we are obliged to follow. I see equality and inclusion as something that guides our principles and defines our values.” Ms Carey is currently working with other firms in the region to give guidance on policies and practices relating to equality and diversity.

FOOD

Restaurant Review By Ellie Adshead |

Contemporary food & cocktails |

Taking over the Old Blind School on Hardman Street is the latest newcomer to the city’s everevolving food and drink scene, The Florist. It has quickly become the most photographed place in Liverpool and may already be clogging up your social media feeds. As the name suggests, its theme is completely devoted to flowers - the décor, the menus and even the napkins. However, it’s not totally overly done and there are rustic elements which give that industrial charm we’re oh-so fond of here. My partner and I visited midweek and we were seated in the restaurant on the first floor. On our way to the table we couldn’t help but enjoy the vast array of floral installations that greeted us at every turn, particularly the impressive flower wall at the top of the grand staircase. Friendly staff were on hand to talk through the menu and recommended their favourites, which is always helpful when you’re faced with a vast choice. As suggested by our server, I opted for the refreshing Rhubarb in Bloom (£8.50) to drink. It was a stunning concoction of rhubarb gin, rhubarb and ginger liqueur, green apple liqueur,

“The peanut sauce cut the richness of the toffee and coated the teeth in a way that you didn’t mind at all.”

raspberry syrup and ginger ale. My other half chose a Malbec (£7.25) which hit all the right notes for him. Whilst still browsing the menu, we indulged in some lime and coriander edamame beans (£3.95) and the lavender honey and sunflower loaf with whipped goat's cheese butter (£4.50). It’s a popular choice for many according to our server, and we didn’t need to question why. The generous portion of bread was deliciously warm and served on a slate with a spread of goat’s cheese butter, a drizzle of lavender honey and adorned with delicate petals. It was picture perfect for about five seconds until we devoured it. We opted to share the baked camembert (£6.95) to start, which was topped with a homemade cranberry and pistachio granola and served with crudités. The cheese was flavoursome and melted to the right consistency. The crunchy sweet and savoury topping was also a great addition. For the main course my partner enjoyed a deli board (£11.50) which allows you to choose four elements (or more at an extra cost of £3.25 each) from a range of options. He went for prosciutto, a mango chicken and vegetable spring roll, sweet potato and chickpea tagine and homemade sesame prawn flatbread, and polished the board off in what seemed like record time – it was a clear winner for him. I chose the chicken hanging kebab with piri piri sauce and fries, which were sprinkled with harissa seasoning (£11.95). The chicken came marinated in sweet chilli and ginger and had been impeccably grilled with peppers and onions. Whilst it was deliciously tasty, I felt that there could have been more chicken on the skewer.

Miraculously, we found room for dessert and the hazelnut, chocolate and banana spring roll (£5.50) instantly caught my attention. The crispy filo pastry encased the soft banana and oozing chocolate, and was offset by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. My date ordered the sticky toffee pudding with peanut sauce (£5.95), a combination we haven’t come across before. The peanut sauce was a welcomed element as it cut the richness of the toffee and coated the teeth in a way that you didn’t mind at all. To complete our dining experience, we rounded the meal off with a Peaches and Prosecco (£8.50) – a sweet blend of Aperol, wild peach liqueur, peach bitters, fresh mint and prosecco. The other half, meanwhile, ordered a Schöfferhofer grapefruit weizen (£3.80) – a tangy wheat beer with a hint of grapefruit. Overall, The Florist certainly impressed us visually and most definitely left our taste buds satisfied. Unsurprisingly, the restaurant and bar is usually fully booked at weekends, so make sure you reserve a table in advance if you’re looking to dine there – otherwise you’ll just have to see it on Instagram!

Where to go this summer: 5 alternative destinations

ischia, italy If you’re keen to sample a typical Italian seaside holiday but not so hot for the mainland crowds then Ischia might be the summer destination for you. A favourite haunt of Angela Merkel, this volcanic island nestled in the Bay of Naples has been welcoming famous names and Italian holidaymakers for decades with its purifying hot springs, gorgeous scenery and quaint villages. Negombo thermal park overlooking San Montano Bay in Lacco Ameno is the perfect place to investigate the potential healing benefits of Ischia’s fabled H2O. With 12 pools and baths to choose from, each heated to a different temperature, exploring these enchanted grounds makes a perfect day out for couples and families alike. For a slice of Ischian culture don't miss La Festa di Sant'Anna or The Feast of St. Anne, which takes place every July around Castello Aragonese (Aragon Castle) in the northwestern town of Ischia Ponte. Starting with a precession of floats representing Ischia’s six main towns, the event climaxes with a firework display and incredible simulation of the medieval castle going up in flames, complete with Hollywood-style special effects.

jersey, uk It might be a minuscule nine by five miles wide, but the island of Jersey off the coast of Normandy has plenty to offer families looking for an adventurous getaway that won’t break the bank. With golden beaches boasting huge waves, awe-inspiring coastal walks and historic castles to explore, Jersey is an overlooked jewel on our doorstep waiting to be discovered. History buffs will enjoy studying the numerous pillboxes and forts dotted along the coast - sobering reminders of Germany’s five-year occupation during the Second World War. Anyone eager to learn more can head down into the Jersey War Tunnels four miles outside Saint Helier. A vast subterranean complex dug deep into the rock by the occupying forces, the tunnels now serve as a museum, documenting what life was like during this dark period of the island’s history. Alongside its storied wartime past, Jersey is also well known for its quality seafood. Call in at The Fresh Fish Company on St Helier’s Victoria Pier to pick up some delicious fresh spider crab – perfect for an evening BBQ on the beach.

easyJet operates a daily service to Jersey Airport from LJLA. The number 15 bus from outside the arrivals terminal gets you to the island's capital St Helier in around 30 minutes.

lake balaton, hungary Nicknamed ‘The Hungarian Sea’, Lake Balaton is a huge freshwater lake situated 76 miles southwest of the capital Budapest. A popular summer destination for Hungarians eager to escape the oppressive city heat, its expansive shoreline is lined with beaches, thermal spas, vineyards and volcanic hills. Balatonfüred is considered the capital of the northern shore and its most stylish resort to boot. The ideal location to explore the lake from, this spa town is famed for its two marinas, stunning architecture and thriving restaurant scene. For something a bit livelier try Siófok on the opposite side of the lake - a city known for its buoyant nightlife and impressive beaches. Every summer, one of Europe’s biggest open-air music festivals takes place in neighbouring Zamárdi. Featuring performances from The Chainsmokers, David Guetta and Eric Prydz, this year’s Balaton Sound runs from 4-8 July.

Forget images of bargain basement stag dos and cut-price lager; Vilnius is an up and coming capital brimming with culture and a fiercely independent spirit. The Christopher Summer Festival, which runs through July and August, neatly captures the city’s ethos with its motto of “all genres are good, except the boring ones”. Taking place in a range of spaces across Vilnius and elsewhere, the festival features 50 concerts incorporating a range of genres from jazz and world music to traditional organ, guitar and piano pieces. Further bolstering Vilnius’s fashionable image, the city’s Užupis district has been named by travel experts as one of 2018’s coolest neighbourhoods in Europe to visit. Home to a number of art galleries and well-to-do restaurants, the area has been likened to some of the continent’s famous bohemian hubs and in 1997 it even declared itself an independent republic.

Experience an authentic slice of Portuguese seaside charm with a getaway to the ancient Algarvian town of Tavira. Unlike some of the more developed parts of Portugal’s south, you won’t find any giant hotels here, but instead it’s charming cobbled streets, beautiful churches and some of the country’s most unspoiled beaches. Hire a boat or a kayak to explore the magnificent Ria Formosa Nature Park which stretches 60km along the coast. Voted one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal, Ria Formosa is a labyrinth of canals, marshes and islands, brimming with wildlife and magnificent vistas. As night falls, stroll into the town’s historic centre for a drop of quality local vino and a plate of freshly caught seafood at one of the many reasonably priced restaurants.

Ryanair operates two weekly flights to Vilnius from LJLA. The airport is well served by public transport with inexpensive train and bus services running frequently into the city centre.

easyJet and Ryanair both offer regular flights to Faro Airport, the closest airport to Tavira. Frequent train and bus services connect the airport to the centre of Faro, where it's an hour’s bus ride to the town.

FIVE OF THE BEST

SUMMER EXHIBITIONS IN THE CITY REGION Our pick of cultural showcases in and around Liverpool which are well worth checking out.

LIFE IN MOTION: EGON SCHIELE / FRANCESCA WOODMAN TATE LIVERPOOL UNTIL S EPT EM B ER A decade on from its acclaimed Gustav Klimt exhibition, Tate Liverpool offers an unmissable opportunity to see the work of his protégé, Egon Schiele. Regarded as one of the most prominent proponents of Austrian expressionism, Schiele’s style was viewed by some as controversial as he often depicted tortured and emaciated figures in his drawings. Presented alongside Schiele at the Albert Dock gallery is the work of lauded American photographer, Francesca Woodman. During her short but remarkably productive career Woodman produced a large number of striking, surreal and often humorous photographs, many of which are on display here.

FRANCIS ALŸS VICTORIA GALLERY & MUSEUM JU LY - O CTO BE R PA RT O F L I V E R P O O L BIE N N IAL From an artist who’s famous for a film of him seemingly pointlessly pushing a block of ice through the streets of Mexico City, comes a new exhibition of postcard-sized paintings. Executed in the tradition of classic plein air painting, or painting outdoors, many of Francis Alÿs’ creations were done whilst scouting new locations for future film projects, from the Middle East to South America and China. Presented as part of Liverpool Biennial 2018, Alÿs’ paintings will be displayed along a timeline spanning from the 1980s to the modern day. SEAN SCULLY: 1970, WALKER ART GALLERY JULY - OC TOB ER Bear witness to the master of post-minimalist abstraction when Irish-born, American-based Sean Scully revisits his early work for the first time at the Walker. Scully, known for his technically flawless paintings consisting of a complex grid system of crisscrossing lines, was named runner-up in the John Moores Painting Prize in 1972 and ‘74. The opening of the new retrospective coincides with the 60th anniversary of the esteemed art accolade. Meanwhile, works by 60 of this year’s painting prize hopefuls will feature in a special exhibition at the Walker running from 14 July to 18 November. 44 Your Move

ARTS

DOUBLE FANTASY JOHN & YOKO MUSEUM OF LIVERPOOL UNTIL APRI L Any serious Beatles fans should be sure to visit this free exhibition celebrating the coming together of popular music’s most famous power couple. Through interviews, quotes and some never before seen objects, the story of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s personal and creative relationships will be told in their own words for the first time. Drawn from Yoko’s private collection, standout items include hand-written lyrics to ‘In My Life’, John’s iconic New York tshirt and Yoko’s distinctive Porsche sunglasses.

FIVE KIRKBY GALLERY UNTIL SEPT EM B ER Get an inside look at how a painting goes from sketch to finished piece with this exhibition at Kirkby Gallery. ‘Five’ showcases five of the best painters currently living or working in Knowsley; Gary McGillivray, Leslie Briggs, Gill Cowley, Mike Kirby and Nick Daly. Meanwhile ‘The Artist’s Studio’, as the name suggests, will allow the public to observe and engage with the five artists about their work. Exhibiting alongside the ‘Five’ will be five Knowsley school children, each showing off some of their artwork for the very first time.

Food & drink latest RESTAURANT’S 24-HOUR CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN TO RAISE £50K

The fifth ARKET branch is heading to Paradise Street

ARKET LINES UP NEW VEGETARIAN CAFÉ A vegetarian café is heading to Liverpool ONE this year as part of new store ‘ARKET’. Set to be based on the ‘New Nordic Food Manifesto’, the eatery will sit alongside the retailer’s departments selling “essential products” for men, women, children and the home. The H&M Group brand, described as a “modern-day market”, will occupy a two-storey unit on Paradise Street which was previously home to H&M. Due to open in early autumn, the Liverpool branch will be ARKET’s fifth UK site – joining three stores in London and one recently opened at Kent’s Bluewater Shopping Centre. Lars Axelsson, ARKET’s managing director, says: “Liverpool ONE is an innovative and inspiring shopping destination and we feel very excited about the opportunity to meet new customers and to expand our presence in the UK.” Alison Clegg, director of asset management at Liverpool ONE owner Grosvenor Europe, adds: “The signing of ARKET secures one of Europe’s most interesting new brands for Liverpool ONE. “Their presence adds even more appeal to our offer, which is unique in the North West and one of the most compelling in the UK.” 46 Your Move

An ambitious restaurant crowdfunding campaign to raise £50,000 in 24 hours will get underway in May. Chef Gary Usher, who previously raised more than £200,000 for his Wreckfish venue in Liverpool city centre, is looking to generate the cash for his fifth venture in Prescot. At 7pm on 29 May Gary and his team will get the Kickstarter initiative underway to secure funds for Pinion, which plans to serve bistro dishes such as beef braise with truffle and parmesan chips and a classic tart for dessert. Ahead of the campaign, Gary says: “Prescot has an incredible sense of community with some amazing people who are so proud of where they come from. It’s been through some hard times but with plans to regenerate the area, myself and the team are hoping to bring a really great little bistro to Prescot and be part of something bigger than just a business. “Why 24 hours? It seems crazy, but because the building is completely empty, we really need to get going so it’s open for the summer.” The entrepreneurial chef, whose other

Call to join biggest ‘Big Boss Brekkie’ and help end homelessness Homeless charity The Whitechapel Centre wants as many people as possible in Merseyside to get together for its forthcoming ‘Big Boss Brekkie’. Local people, businesses, restaurants and coffee shops are being called on to get involved with the 18-24 June fundraising week. Registration is now open for the third Big Boss Brekkie which aims to get people involved with raising money for homelessness in a social and informal way. Like coffee mornings and cake sales, all you have to do is organise a breakfast – invite colleagues, family, friends or people in the community, buy or cook some tasty breakfast items and ask for a donation for The Whitechapel Centre. Participating businesses and food and drink venues can host their own Big Boss Brekkie event or serve up a special breakfast item on the menu and donate a proportion of the sales.

Charlotte Hopkins, the charity’s community and events fundraiser, says: “This is our third Big Boss Brekkie week and we are hoping to get even more people, businesses, community groups involved this year. “Last year The Whitechapel Centre cooked over 12,000 breakfasts for people sleeping rough. That’s why we want to make this year’s breakfast bigger than ever.” Businesses, local people and eateries can serve up food to help
