EDITOR’S LETTER The arrival of April brings a bumper bank holiday, providing the perfect opportunity for a break. But that doesn’t have to mean hiked up holiday prices and hectic travel plans – here in the city region there’s plenty going on to keep everyone entertained. We’ve rounded up 10 reasons to spend the long Easter weekend in Liverpool. And as Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral takes centre stage in 2017 with its golden jubilee, Your Move talks to French musician and sound engineer Thierry Balasse as he prepares to perform a fitting musical celebration within the iconic building. We also take a closer look at the future of Liverpool Football Club’s Melwood training ground as, with the team planning to relocate to Knowsley, it becomes the subject of a new housing vision. What sort of homes should be developed on the West Derby site and who will live there?

MARKET HIGHLIGHTS

£599pcm Coleman’s Fire Depository, Liverpool, L8 Painted white, the brick walls are a more subtle yet striking feature of this one-bedroom luxury loft style apartment. Providing an interior nod to the distinct building’s history, which is prominent from the outside as original signage is intact, the walls provide a backdrop to a large open-plan living space. Chipboard surrounds a glossy fitted kitchen and, coupled with industrial pillars and hints of vibrant colour, adds to the contemporary look.

Brunswick Parade, Waterloo, L22 An exposed brickwork panel is a centrepiece of this spacious living and dining room. It adds stripped back character to the otherwise simple, minimalist décor, and sits in contrast to a sophisticated chandelier and lounge seating. The room, set within a twobedroom penthouse apartment benefitting from views over Crosby Marina, also invites an abundance of natural light in through multiple windows and a skylight.

EXPOSED BRICKWORK INJECTS CHARACTER INTO THIS TRIO OF HOMES

£249,950 Waterloo Warehouse, Liverpool, L3 A brick ceiling arches over this chic kitchen, combining contemporary style with the original features of the landmark residential Waterloo Warehouse building. Appliances including a Neff oven and microwave, a ceramic hob with extractor, fridge, freezer, washer/dryer and a dishwasher are discreetly tucked away amongst high gloss handleless units. Plus an integrated island featuring a granite breakfast bar elegantly turns the functional space into a more communal area within the two-bedroom property.

The annual event will celebrate a year of success across the region’s residential and commercial sectors, with awards up for grabs in 13 categories. Property experts have until Friday 15 June to submit their entries for this year’s prestigious accolades, including the recently announced new ‘Best Affordable Home for Rent’ title.

The winners will be announced during a lavish 19 October ceremony at Lutyens Crypt in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, which is celebrating its golden jubilee in 2017. Kim O’Brien, director of Move Publishing which organises the NWPAs, says: “The NWPAs recognise both the businesses and the people whose vision and commitment continue to drive the region’s property sector. “The awards are a fantastic opportunity to be

NEWS HIGH DEMAND FOR NEW STONEYCROFT HOMES Properties at Cygnet Homes’ Powell Way development in Stoneycroft are in high demand, according to the housebuilder.

Jill Povey (left) and Dionne McHugh (right)

MERSEYSIDE PROPERTY FIRM READY TO GROW Liverpool City Region property firm Empress Estates is ready to grow its business off the back of recent success. The letting agent and property management specialist is seeking to increase the number of homes and landlord clients on its books following a surge in custom. Empress Estates director Dionne McHugh, who runs the company alongside business partner Jill Povey, attributes the recent upturn to new licensing legislation forcing landlords to seek assistance from property management companies. She says: “Following recent growth we have reached a point

where we need new properties and landlords. We have professional tenants waiting. “It’s getting harder and harder for landlords with compliance regulations such as licencing and benefit caps, so turning to a management company is the best option for many. “I have also worked as a private landlord for the last 10 years and have seen and experienced the sweeping changes investors in the industry have had to deal with.” Empress was founded nine years ago in Crosby and has business interests across the North West, with properties around Liverpool and Chester in its portfolio.

The family-run business has sold more than half of the plots at its latest new build scheme - which lies in a cul-de-sac off Queens Drive within a matter of months. Tim McNally, property manager at Cygnet, believes the area’s transport links and the success of the government’s Help to Buy scheme are helping to draw buyers to the three-bedroom, luxury homes. He says: “I think these houses have been so popular because of the prices, the fact that they’re available through Help to Buy and their location. We’ve also been proactive when it comes to helping people get on the property ladder with offers that include us paying their stamp duty. “Queens Drive has great transport links and is only five minutes away from the M62. Not everyone wants to live on top of the main road but our development is tucked away in a cul-de-sac, so residents are away from the traffic but can still take advantage of the transport links.” For more information call Cygnet Homes on 0151 305 0375. PHONE BIDDERS BATTLE IT OUT AT SUTTON KERSH AUCTION There was another good turnout at The Crowne Plaza

Telephone bidders came to the fore at the latest Sutton Kersh auction which saw £5 million worth of property sold. There was fierce bidding throughout the March event with many going head-to-head over the phone. In particular a three-storey property in Toxteth captured high interest, eventually selling for £25,000 more than its guide price. Cathy Holt, associate director at Sutton Kersh, says: “Our March auction saw another incredible turnout. We were at standing room only for the most part and

also had lots of phone bidders - many of whom won. “We sold 15 properties prior to the auction and have been able to continue on from our successful start to 2017.” Other highlights at the event included a three-storey Georgian property in Liverpool city centre, which sold for £280,000, as well as a three-storey middle terrace property in Wavertree which went for £180,000. The next Sutton Kersh auction will be held on 25 May at The Crowne Plaza. For more information, visit www.suttonkersh.co.uk/auctions. Your Move 23

NEWS LIVERPOOL HOUSEBUILDER REPORTS PART EXCHANGE SURGE

GROWING PROPERTY FIRM LOOKS TO EXPAND IN LIVERPOOL An Ireland-based property firm has launched a search for the “best talent in Liverpool” as it expands into the city.

An increasing number of ‘second steppers’ are seeking part exchange deals when moving home according to housebuilder Countryside. The company has introduced exchange offers at its Belgravia development in Gateacre after they proved popular with customers at its other sites in the North West. Peter Vella, regional sales and marketing director at Countryside, says: “The part exchange scheme has been designed to make the moving process as simple and straightforward as possible, so it’s great to see buyers take advantage of this initiative to secure their new home. “The scheme has proven extremely popular on a number of our North West developments and we’re expecting it to generate even further interest at Belgravia.” Peter’s comments follow research by Lloyds Bank which shows that 39% of ‘second steppers’ are finding it more difficult to sell their home compared to 12 months ago. Sited on Cuckoo Lane, Countryside’s Belgravia development comprises 81 four and five-bedroom homes, with all properties available through the part exchange initiative. For more information call Countryside on 0151 601 4914.

Mossley Hill Investments, which focuses on acquiring blocks of apartments and dividing them up to sell individual units to investors, is currently growing its presence in the city and the wider North West. The company, which is headquartered in Dublin, hopes to progress the expansion further by appointing an experienced Liverpool agent. The new addition will help to identify and evaluate investment opportunities throughout the North West for Mossley Hill Investments clients, therefore broadening the business’ reach. Laura Barry, managing director of Mossley Hill Investments, says: “We want to build and incentivise the best team possible and are prepared to smash the ceiling on the industry’s remuneration for the best talent in Liverpool.”

Smith and Sons lines up 34 lots at spring event A mix of refurbishment opportunities, land primed for new homes and houses will go under the hammer this month. Smith and Sons has a catalogue of 34 lots on offer at its spring event on 26 April. Highlights during the 2pm property sale at Bromborough’s Village Hotel are expected to include a residential development plot fronting The Esplanade in Wirral, which has planning permission for five town houses and 16 apartments. Meanwhile a five-bedroom detached house has potential for redevelopment and the construction of an additional home on Westwood Road near Upton Village, and a property with a shop in Claughton Road near Birkenhead town centre comes with permission for a conversion to a 10-bedroom house of multiple occupancy (HMO). A semi-detached Radnor Place house close to Birkenhead Park will also be up for auction and is already said to be producing an annual income of £30,600, representing a yield in excess of 12%. Auctioneer Chris Johnson says: “There are some excellent potential returns on investments for those looking to either

Full marks for city region housebuilders

St. Modwen Homes is among the housebuilders to have received the HBF’s top score

A number of housebuilders with Liverpool City Region developments have been awarded five star customer satisfaction ratings by the Home Builders Federation (HBF). For retirement specialist McCarthy & Stone, whose local schemes include Grove Court in Crosby and Charlotte Court in Ainsdale, the accolade was given for the 12th year in a row. Fiona Brooks, regional sales and marketing director at McCarthy and Stone North West, says: “We are delighted to receive this award for a 12th consecutive year, and that so many of our home owners say they would happily recommend us to their friends and family.” Meanwhile Stewart Milne, which is behind the Upton Pines scheme in Wirral, says the award is proof of the high quality of its properties. Glenn Allison, chief executive of Stewart Milne Group, adds: “We have worked extremely hard to achieve our five star status and we are proud to have been awarded this accolade, especially as it comes from our customers’ views.” St. Modwen Homes, which is behind St Helens’ Radley Park scheme, also received the top score in its second year of being entered into the HBF’s customer service rating. The result shows an improvement on last year’s four star score, with managing director Dave Smith adding: “We are delighted to be accepted into the small group of home builders that have the elite accolade of the five star rating.” Churchill Retirement Living, which has brought Trinity Lodge to the market in Formby, also achieved top marks in the 2017 survey. The prestigious independent industry accolade recognises companies achieving over 90% satisfaction ratings from customers who purchased a home in the last year. A five star rating is only awarded when more than nine out of 10 customers would recommend a company to a friend.

Law firm makes special Easter delivery at Anfield School A Liverpool law firm has surprised children at an Anfield primary school with a special Easter delivery. Paul Crowley & Co solicitors presented all 275 pupils at Whitefield Primary School with their own Easter egg as it continues to build positive relationships in the local community. Louise Flood, PA to the firm’s office manager and accounts clerk, Katie Johnson, visited the school for a special assembly to delight every child from nursery to Year 6. The scheme has been running for five years, with the solicitors’ also gifting

Christmas selection boxes each year. Nadine Carroll, headteacher at Whitefield Primary School, says: “We are incredibly appreciative of the support we receive from the local community. “It’s wonderful to come together to collaborate and celebrate with local businesses at such a special time of year.” Louise adds: “It is incredibly important for local businesses to come together and support each other. “These networks are what makes a community special, and so we are proud to work with Whitefield Primary throughout the year.”

WORDS BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS

MOVING ON: WHAT’S NEXT FOR MELWOOD? AS LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB’S LFC FIRST TEAM TRAINING GROUND SINCE THE s MELWOOD HAS LONG BEEN A MAJOR PRESENCE IN WEST DERBY SO WHEN LFC RECENTLY ANNOUNCED PLANS TO RELOCATE TO KIRKBY IT CAME AS A SHOCK TO MANY WHAT HAPPENS TO THE NEAR -ACRE SITE IF OR WHEN THE CLUB MOVES ON IS NOW A HOT TOPIC A DEVELOPMENT OF FAMILY HOMES HAS BEEN SUGGESTED BUT IS THIS WHAT THE AREA NEEDS?

Just days after agreeing a six-year extension to his contract as Liverpool manager last year, Jürgen Klopp was reiterating his desire to bridge the gap between the club’s two training bases - the Academy in Kirkby and Melwood in West Derby. Fast-forward to February 2017 and the club announced plans to bring LFC’s first team and academy training operations together on one site in Kirkby. Subject to planning permission for the £50 million project, the Reds’ senior squad will vacate their historic West Derby base during the summer of 2019 - leaving behind a prime piece of land which the club says can provide space for

“much needed new family homes in the city”. A consultation over the plans has recently been conducted, inviting local residents to submit their views on the proposals which, at this stage, include a development of 160 family homes with vehicular access from Melwood Drive, Crown Road and Deysbrook Lane. Initial reaction to the news has been mixed. “It would be a sorry day for West Derby if the training facilities of this world-renowned club were shifted elsewhere,” says Stephen Guy, chairman of the West Derby Society, which has been raising awareness about the district and assisting with planning issues since 1977. “There is talk going around that the reason

the move to Kirkby has come up is because of the new West Derby Medical Centre which has been built almost opposite the entrance to Melwood and is causing some traffic disruption. “We’re suggesting to the club that it moves the entrance to the training ground round to the much quieter Crown Road where the old entrance was some years ago.” Despite the society’s opposition to the plans and its suggestion of an alternative resolution, it appears the club is fully committed to the Kirkby move. Councillor Tony Conception, a Labour representative for the Yew Tree ward where the training ground is located, met with LFC in

MELWOOD’S HOUSING FUTURE

March to discuss residents’ concerns over the plans to leave Melwood but has admitted to Your Move that he doesn’t expect the club will stay. With LFC’s mind seemingly made up, thoughts turn to the residential potential of the site and what type of housing would be a good fit for the area. According to the manager of a longestablished estate agent in nearby West Derby Village, any new homes won’t be on the market for long with a strong demand for property in the area being reported. “There is certainly a shortage of houses for sale in L12 at the moment,” says Leah O’Neill, branch manager at Sutton Kersh. “On average, we’re getting between 30 and 40 applicants registering every week for properties the vast majority being first-time buyers - but the supply just isn’t meeting demand.” Leah is hopeful any developer who takes on the site will be sympathetic to the budgets of those applicants and will design the scheme accordingly with a mix of affordable homes alongside some larger detached properties for families looking to upsize. Others are less willing to consider the possibility of a residential development on Melwood. “We [West Derby Society] don't believe that West Derby can hold very much more new housing,” says Stephen, referencing Bellway’s nearby Bellefield development and Redrow’s Regency Manor scheme on the former Holly Lodge school site. “We don't oppose new housing in the right circumstances but our feeling is that the infrastructure of West Derby cannot support housing on this particular site. “160 new houses would put an intolerable strain on the roads and the schools nearby. Several of the schools in the area surrounding

the site are full and there are no new ones planned.” Another established estate agent in the village agrees that people are disappointed to see LFC moving out of the area and has noted a particularly negative reaction to the news. However in spite of this, Peter Bellamy at Northwood is keen to focus on the positives of any future development, both on a commercial level and for prospective homebuyers. “As an estate agent I think it’s quite encouraging news - there are opportunities with any new development for business to come your way,” says Peter, director at Northwood. “Even if it’s not with the housebuilder directly then there can be opportunities which spring off it with part-exchange and things like that.” Peter believes the fact that West Derby tends to be quite appealing to young and growing families means affordability would be an issue with any development. With this in mind, does he envisage another luxury scheme similar to the nearby Bellefield development on Everton FC’s old training ground, where prices start just north of £330,000? “I can’t see that sort of housing being built on Melwood,” adds Peter. “The vast majority of stock around the training ground is three-bedroom semidetached so if its going to be in-keeping with the character of the area then that’s the sort of stock that we are going to want to see. “I think it’s going to be more family orientated - two, three and four-bedroom houses - and will hopefully reflect people’s budgets in the area because we know from our own data what their potential budgets are.” Cllr Conception confirms that no decision has yet been made on what kind of demographic the

development will be aimed at ahead of the scheme going out to tender but, like Leah, Peter is hopeful the needs of local residents will be considered. “If you were looking to tailor a development on the Melwood site to prospective applicants in the area then you would be aiming at between £150,000 to £200,000. “That range of budgets would fit a lot of pockets and it would be nice to think it would be something like that, but I don't know.”

“ I CAN’T SEE [LUXURY] HOUSING BEING BUILT ON MELWOOD... I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE MORE FAMILY ORIENTED AND WILL HOPEFULLY REFLECT PEOPLE’S BUDGETS IN THE AREA. ”

THE BUILD TO RENT

Boom

It’s the tenure that’s seemingly taking over the nation. Across the UK purposebuilt rental accommodation is popping up regularly and the trend shows no sign of stopping. Legal & General Group recently released plans to create a purpose-built PRS (private rented sector) site in Bath, comprising 171 apartments, 126 car parking spaces and 17,000 sq ft of retail space. In Birmingham, Camborne Land Investments has revealed plans to develop a £100 million, 500-apartment project called Kent Street Baths. And in Manchester work is set to begin on Moda Living’s 466-apartment block scheme. Here in Liverpool, of course, the trend can also be seen. Just last month Anwyl’s 366-home development in the Pall Mall area of Liverpool was given the green light. But while, traditionally, purpose-built rental schemes have consisted of apartments, largely based in the city centre and surrounding areas, in recent years we’ve started to see more housing developments created specifically for the rental market.

WHAT IS BUILD TO RENT? Build to rent simply describes properties which are developed with the sole aim of being marketed as rental homes. They’re not for sale to owner occupiers.

GENERATION RENT

WHY IS IT GRABBING THE HEADLINES AT THE MOMENT?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RENTING A BUILD TO RENT HOME?

Primarily for two reasons. Firstly, there is so much build to rent accommodation being developed across the country it’s hard to ignore it and, secondly, the sector has received the backing of the government. As the UK-wide housing crisis continues, it’s clear a lack of housing is at the centre of the problem. But it’s not just homes to buy that we’re lacking, it’s homes to rent too. Indeed, according to the latest English Housing Survey there are now almost one million more families in the rental sector than there were 10 years ago. And the government is starting to recognise the need for a successful and safe rental market with good quality houses. Announcing the government’s Housing White Paper in February, communities secretary Sajid Javid revealed plans to improve safeguards in the private rented sector and “work with the rental sector to promote three-year tenancy agreements, giving families the security that they need to put down their roots in a community”. The government also called for a consultation on what needs to be done to “support more build to rent developments”. This, said the communities secretary, would include changing the National Planning Policy Framework “to make it easier for build to rent developers to offer affordable private rental homes instead of other types of affordable housing”. That consultation is now underway and will close on 1 May. Developers looking to build such schemes can access the £1 billion build to rent fund. The fund is a debt guarantee scheme, backed by the government, which aims to encourage developers to build more homes for rent. Since its creation in 2013 the government has invested over £500m in build to let developments.

Perhaps the biggest pull factor is that the properties are newly built and you’re likely to be the first person to live in them. This can be a big draw for many renters. Tenants are able to benefit from the sort of quality and features that would usually only be afforded to buyers. Quality is often cited as a problem in the rental sector - with initiatives like Liverpool’s landlord licensing scheme introduced to ensure landlords meet minimum standards. Renting a new build means tenants can avoid problems associated with old and tired housing. Location can also be a plus. Often build to rent developments are found in areas that the tenants would be unable to buy in, thus allowing them to enjoy living in a sought-after part of the city and in good quality accommodation even if they’re unable to get onto the housing ladder.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE SECTOR IN THE CITY? It’s set to flourish even more. While PRS apartment developments continue to get planning permission across the city, a number of new housing developments are also on the cards. Sigma Capital has already begun working with developers including Countryside to offer newly built homes for private rent in the Liverpool City Region.

TALENT IN THE CITY

“ I’ve never performed ‘The Liverpool Mass’ before and there are no plans to stage other performances, so it’s a pretty unique event.

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

How did your collaboration with Pierre Henry start, and what projects have you collaborated on with him? I met Pierre Henry thanks to Etienne Bultingaire, who was his regular sound engineer. To begin with I was Etienne’s assistant, and then I occasionally stood in for him. The collaboration was going well so Pierre asked me to perform some of his works like the ‘Hypermix’ concert in Mexico, or the ‘Quartet Phrases’ with Maurice Béjart at the Bastille Opera in Paris in 2002. I also advised Pierre on new digital equipment for his Son Ré studio. Over the last few months he has asked me to perform his new compositions and has also explained to me what his desires and his visions for the future are. In particular he has outlined how he would like his major works, what he calls his ‘essentials’, to be performed.

Photo: Flickr / Tim Dutton

You’re going to perform ‘The Liverpool Mass’ at the Metropolitan Cathedral. What can the audience expect? The main thing about this work is that it places the voice at the heart of the whole composition in a way that is so full, so advanced, that it has become emblematic of this kind of work. So you shouldn’t expect the profusion of sounds that is often typical of Pierre Henry’s work. It’s more like a thorough exploration of the voice and of the text. Pierre Henry composed this mass for the inauguration of the Metropolitan Cathedral, but it was never played in the venue for which it was created. Has Pierre made any changes to it over the last 50 years? Pierre has added the Credo section, which was composed in 1970. Otherwise this is the original piece, re-mastered by Pierre himself for this performance. Are you planning to perform ‘The Liverpool Mass’ elsewhere? If so, would the work change at all with each performance? Each performance is closely linked to the venue - if only because the acoustics vary from one venue to another. I’ve never performed ‘The Liverpool Mass’ before and there are no plans to stage other performances in the foreseeable future, so it’s a pretty unique event. Pierre is still composing, he is extremely creative, and he likes to see his latest works performed as well as, and rather than, his older pieces. What do you think of the relationship between this mass and the cathedral’s unusual architecture? When you listen to ‘The Liverpool Mass’ it is very clear that Pierre composed it for that specific space, and it will only reach its full potential in

that very space. I really can’t wait to hear it and perform it in the cathedral. Preparing the concert and listening to the music in the studio is a frustrating experience because Pierre anticipated the echoes and reverberation of the cathedral, and so the sound feels a little ‘dry’ for the moment. It will gain amplitude when it unfolds in the space of the cathedral. ‘The Liverpool Mass’ marks the 50th anniversary of the cathedral, but 2017 is also Pierre Henry’s 90th birthday. How are you going to celebrate Pierre’s own milestone year? Several celebrations are scheduled for 2017. First there will be a great ball, with the ‘Mass for the Present Time’ being performed by eight choreographers under the nave of the Grand Palais in Paris, on 14 July. Pierre is also closely involved with two other events. There will be a ‘Sleepless Night’ on 7 October at the Paris Philharmonie, during which several of us will be performing a wide selection of his work. Radio France is planning a long birthday weekend from 8-10 December too. Three new compositions will premiere on 9 December, and on 8 December I am staging a concert, titled ‘Concert for the Present Time’, based on the ‘Mass for the Present Time’. There will also be a concert on 10 December. I should also mention that [the label] Decca will issue a 12 CD box set in November 2017. You’ve been making electronic music for several decades. What effects have technological innovations had on your work? The most striking changes have had to do with the computer, of course. Computers have enabled us to save a lot of time; they’ve also offered many new creative possibilities in terms of sound treatment. But there aren’t only advantages; I’ve often noticed that, precisely because the screen is the main interface between you and the computer, you often end up composing with your eyes as much as with your ears… and it’s a trap you mustn’t fall into. Pierre never has. Who or what have been your main influences as a musician and a composer? I won’t list the names of theatre directors but I have often worked for the stage, trying to serve the director’s vision and to interact with the actors’ voices - this has really had a big impact on my work. Then [French composer] Christian Zanési encouraged me a lot, and I was able to watch him work and compose in the studio - the way he worked on sound, on its materiality, was quite an education. And of course, I’ve been very lucky to work with Pierre Henry himself. Have you ever played in Liverpool or in the North West of England in the past? Believe it or not I’ve never been to Liverpool, or even to Great Britain! I’m delighted to come and perform this incredible work in this incredible cathedral; it’s a very exciting prospect! THE APPROACHING EASTER BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR A BREAK BUT THAT DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN LONG JOURNEYS TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK AND HIKED UP GETAWAY PRICES WHATEVER YOU’RE INTO SIMPLY STAYING HERE IN THE LIVERPOOL CITY REGION CAN MAKE FOR A FUN-PACKED FOUR DAYS SO WE’VE ROUNDED UP

TOP REASONS TO KEEP IT LOCAL THIS EASTER

MARK A GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY With milestone celebrations for Bluecoat, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and The Beatles’ seminal ‘Sgt Pepper’ album, 2017 is turning out to be a fun-packed year for the city. Easter hasn’t been overlooked in all the action, as Liverpool also continues to mark 50 years since poets Adrian Henri, Roger McGough and Brian Patten published their hugely successful anthology ‘The Mersey Sound’. Opening in time for the four-day break will be a free exhibition of The Mersey Sound Archives in Liverpool Central Library, featuring

original posters, manuscripts and audio and visual material. A display entitled ‘Adrian Henri – Painter/Poet/Performer’ will also be on show in the Dickens and Gladstone Galleries at St George’s Hall. Meanwhile Everyman Company’s ‘The Story Giant’ – a stage adaptation of the Brian Patten creation – will take place at the Hope Street theatre throughout Easter, providing entertainment for all the family.

REASONS TO STAY IN LIVERPOOL ENJOY A SWEET SCENIC SEARCH

LAUGH OUT LOUD

The Speke Hall estate and Formby’s dramatic sand dunes and pinewoods are stunning to explore on any day of the year, but there’s an added chocolate incentive this Easter. Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt events are lined up for both picturesque National Trust sites, taking place from 14-17 April in Speke and on 15 April in Formby. Scour the locations for tasty treats while admiring the surroundings.

HAVE FUN WHATEVER THE WEATHER If the April showers arrive, your long weekend of fun doesn’t have to be a washout. Indoor Albert Dock attraction Mattel Play! Liverpool is keeping little ones entertained on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout Easter, with appearances by ‘Bob the Builder’ and ‘Fireman Sam’ characters alongside interactive play and workshops. Meanwhile Bank Holiday Monday will kick off a three-day visit from what is described as ‘the UK’s biggest inflatable play event’ at Exhibition Centre Liverpool. Wacky World will bring bouncy, high energy attractions including giant inflatable slides, disco domes, bungee runs and rodeo rides to the fellow waterfront venue for all ages. There’ll be adult-only evening sessions for those who are young at heart too.

SEE A RARE SPECTACLE There’ll be another fleeting unveiling of the intricate Minton tiled flooring within St George’s Hall to coincide with the Easter Bank Holiday. Depicting the Liver Birds, the Roman god Neptune, sea nymphs, dolphins and tridents, the floor was the largest Minton pavement in the world when it was first constructed. The handcrafted mosaic was concealed in the 1860s to allow dancing and events to take place in the grand Grade I-listed landmark, but visitors heading there from 13-19 April will be able to see the famous feature in all its glory.

GET CRAFTY From hands-on creative sessions with Big Art at the Walker Art Gallery to the Museum of Liverpool’s fun-filled programme of talks, handling activities and crafts, National Museums Liverpool is pulling out all the stops to keep children busy and inspired throughout the bank holiday weekend. What’s even better is that the bumper Easterthemed series of events is free to attend on a drop-in basis with no need to book.

PARTY THE NIGHT AWAY

IT’S PANTO SEASON... OH YES IT IS! Now a twice a year tradition here in the Liverpool City Region, light-hearted family pantomimes have become a firm favourite at Easter time. Come Good Friday, St Helens Theatre Royal’s 2017 offering of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ will be in full swing, starring Amy Thompson of Channel 5’s ‘Milkshake’ in the lead role. Elsewhere, Liverpool city centre’s Epstein Theatre will welcome Lee Brennan from boyband 911 and Tina Malone to the stage in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ throughout the holidays.

With a couple of extra days tagged onto your weekend you can enjoy Liverpool right around the clock and still find time to rest. So it’s no surprise that the city’s clubbing circuit hosts some of its biggest nights out of the year over Easter. There’ll be something for everyone as Camp and Furnace welcomes the return of its preppy ‘Prom’ night, complete with ‘80s fancy dress and the crowning of a prom king and queen among the spring break style attractions. Meanwhile clubbing hotspot Eberle Street’s latest addition, Brickworks hosts an Easter special in its state-of-the-art space with headliner Jax Jones. Yousef will also present an instalment of the popular Circus at Arts Club, with three stages of acts including Joris Voorn, Nicole Moudaber and Lauren Lo Sung from 10pm-4am. All three will take place on Saturday 15 April.

The laughter doesn’t stop as Liverpool’s comedy clubs continue to welcome stellar stand-up acts. A triple helping of headliners including Sully O’ Sullivan, Ola and Duncan Oakley hopes to give Seel Street audiences the giggles at Hot Water Comedy Club on 14-15 April, and you can catch newcomers on the rise the following evening as the venue hosts New Act Night. Elsewhere Laughterhouse Comedy will tickle your funny bone with two nights of performances from Mick Ferry, Imran Yusuf and Barry Dodds on 14-15 April at The Slaughter House; and a hearty dose of Saturday night hilarity will come from Gary Delaney and Patrick Monaghan at Liverpool Comedy Club, Camp and Furnace.

CELEBRATE IN STUNNING SURROUNDINGS Where better to mark Easter than within the breath-taking settings of Liverpool’s landmark cathedrals. Morning prayer and then an early evening vigil mass at the city’s unique Metropolitan Cathedral, which celebrates its golden jubilee in 2017, will be followed by one of its most important and symbolic services of the cathedral year when the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil takes place at 9pm. Liverpool Cathedral will round off the festivities with an Easter Monday Organ Recital by organist titulaire, Ian Tracey.

MEET ANIMALS AT THE FARM You can still swap city life for a spring day at the farm without venturing too far and, as well as meeting the animal residents, there’ll be bags of Easter fun thrown in. Head over the water to the Tam O’Shanter Urban Farm in Bidston Hill for some eggsellent activities and live music throughout Good Friday to Easter Monday. There’ll be pottery painting, the chance to ‘pat-a-pet’, face painting and storytelling among the attractions at the free entry site, which is home to animals including geese and goats to sheep, ponies and pigs.

ARTISAN TRADERS ON BOARD FOR REVAMPED PIER HEAD FESTIVAL More than 30 artisan food and drink traders will form part of a three-month festival on the city’s waterfront this summer. The Pier Head Village, formerly The Liverpool Village, will return with independent market stalls enabling visitors to sample locally sourced produce and street food. Other new additions for the 2017 festival include The Village Beach Bar and Restaurant, an exciting collection of thrill rides and a purpose-built art gallery showcasing top regional talent. The Pier Head Village runs from 30 June 10 September.

LAST CALL TO NOMINATE BARS AND RESTAURANTS FOR AWARD Food and drink venues could be in with a chance of winning the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at this year’s Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards. Accolades are already lined up to be presented to establishments in the ‘Bar of the Year’ and ‘Taste’ categories during the 18 May event, but the public can also vote for any local tourism business to win the additional special title. Voters have until 27 April to nominate worthy businesses online at www.lcrtourismawards.com. The winner of the ‘People’s Choice Award’ and 16 other categories acknowledging all aspects of tourism will be presented at the blacktie ceremony at St George’s Hall.

RELOCATED ARTS MARKET TO FEATURE FOOD FAIR Liverpool’s Summer Arts Market will this year include a dedicated food fair when it takes place at its new home of Liverpool Cathedral. Following in the footsteps of its winter counterpart by moving from St. George’s Hall to the iconic Grade-I listed building, the fair will feature handmade products such as jams, chutneys, teas and truffles. Alongside the food, a range of stalls will offer everything from photography, ceramics and jewellery to decorations, glassware and handmade beauty products. There’ll also be a pop-up vintage fair in the Concert Room. The Summer Arts Market takes place on 17 June from 10am-7pm.

CLOCKWORKS

Wolstenholme Square, L1 Despite drawing inspiration from a bygone age of industrial invention, Clockworks is a bar and restaurant ahead of its time. Wolstenholme Square is set to become a bustling residential and leisure district once regeneration work has concluded, but right now it’s little more than a glorified building site. Sat in the shadow of Elliot Group’s development in progress, Clockworks is something of a hidden gem but it’s one you won’t regret unearthing if my lunch time experience is anything to go by. My date and I were struck by the venue’s décor as our host led us to our table. Factory-style lamps, industrial furnishing and exposed brickwork gives Clockworks undeniable character. Situated under ambient low lighting, old-school cinema seats are optional in the venue’s dining area, adding to its quirky charm; and we soon discovered that the creativity extends to the menu. Although Clockworks’ mixologists are more than capable of whipping up traditional cocktails, the original concoctions are the highlights of its drinks offering. I prepped my palate with a Mingo City Mule (£7) - a mixture of gin, cherry, mulberry syrup, lemon and soda water. The glass of fruity goodness and syrupy delight had just the right amount of tang to balance

REVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW

this sweet equation. My date started with The Edison (£7.50), which is as inventive as the name suggests - a hard-hitting vodka kick offset against raspberries, blueberry jam, lemon, egg white, apple juice and plum bitters. Clockworks’ lunch menu includes small and large plates to cater for punters seeking light bites and hearty meals alike. We were eyeing up the small plates to serve as our starters when our host kindly offered to whip up a platter so we could sample the lot. What a gent. Our feast arrived piled high with unique creations you simply won’t find elsewhere. The Tempura Frickles with wasabi mayonnaise (£3) were the pick of the bunch - pickles deep fried until ultra-crispy, served with a tangy dipping sauce to ignite the flavour powder keg. Similarly, the Thyme Crusted Goat’s Cheese (£6) and Black Pudding Bon Bons (£5.50) offered imaginative twists on dishes we’d tasted countless times before, earning full marks in both the flavour and creativity stakes. For the main event I selected the Coca-Cola Slow Cooked Belly Pork (£10) because the theme of the afternoon had very much become trying new and unusual things. Served with red cabbage

and mustard mash on the side, this unorthodox meal was a winning alliance between sweet and savoury succulent pork coated in a sauce subtly enhanced by the world’s most popular soft drink. Coca-Cola is probably the last thing you’d want poured over your main, but it’s used in shrewd quantities during cooking to breathe new life into a classic dish, while the red cabbage added welcome crunch and the mash, absorbing the leftover sauce, proved the perfect companion. My date chose the Buttered Chicken Breast (£9) and was bowled over by the sheer quality of the meat. Having sampled a mouthful, I can also vouch for the triumphant poultry. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the red wine gravy it was served with upped the ante even further. Moreover, the accompanying baconwrapped asparagus and sweet potato mash made the dish complete, hearty enough to serve as a solid alternative to the Great British roast. Clockworks ticks all the right boxes on the décor front but style certainly doesn’t trump substance as it boasts one of the most unique menus in town, and everything we sampled comes thoroughly recommended.
