EDITOR’S LETTER Following Great Britain’s golden performance at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Liverpool is hoping to continue the momentum of large-scale sporting success by hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games. As the city prepares to make a bid for the international event, we investigate how equipped Liverpool is to actually stage the competition and how it compares to its potential rivals. And from future hopes to a thriving history, we look at how Liverpool’s renowned shipping heritage has been shaping and inspiring residential developments along our famous waterfront. Plus with hit sci-fi show ‘Red Dwarf ’ now back on TV, what better time to catch up with co-creator Doug Naylor for a chat about the popular programme and his links to the city.

PARKLANDS ADDS TO TEAM AMID SALES DEMAND Parklands has welcomed a new sales executive to the team as the Liverpool housing development continues to attract demand. Housebuilder New City Vision, which is behind the project, has appointed Mary Lawrence with a view to progress her to field sales manager as the company expands in the future. Another sales manager is also being added to the team, with further appointments said to be in the pipeline.

Parklands has been attracting a number of off-plan sales, with properties being forward sold until March and April 2017 and a recently unveiled four-bedroom show home being well received at the Norris Green scheme. Louise Craven, sales manager at Parklands, says: “We’ve never been so busy. NEWS KEPPIE MASSIE JOINS LANDLORD SHOW LINE-UP

Home-Start Liverpool to hold 15th anniversary fundraiser The charity Home-Start Liverpool will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a special fundraising bash.

Keppie Massie Residential will be among the exhibitors at this year’s show

Keppie Massie Residential is the latest expert exhibitor to sign up to this year’s Landlord & Property Show. The Liverpool-based agent will be on hand to advise both new and experienced landlords on investing in city properties, as well as promoting its range of landlord services during the 22 October event. According to Debra Beach, branch manager at Keppie Massie Residential, Liverpool’s lettings market is currently “buoyant” with investor demand for properties outstripping supply in some areas. She says L1 and L3 postcodes as well as areas around Liverpool’s universities, Allerton and Mossley Hill are proving particularly popular for lettings and adds: “There’s a demand out there for sure and we’re getting a lot of enquiries.” The agent is hoping to build on its success

following participation at an international exhibition in London last year, from which Debra says the company is still benefitting from leads. The Landlord & Property Show, sponsored by Paul Crowley & Co solicitors, will take place at Exhibition Centre Liverpool and is Merseyside’s only dedicated landlord event. This year the exhibition will feature a host of other exhibitors to provide advice and information on all aspects of the lettings industry, from getting the best from investments and keeping up with regulation to health and safety and tax savings. A packed line-up of seminars will also take place throughout the day. For further information and to download your free ticket, visit www.merseysidelandlordsexpo.com.

AGENT CONTINUES EXPANSION WITH ADDITION OF CITY CENTRE OFFICE Liverpool estate agent Marshall Property is continuing its expansion with the launch of an office on Dale Street. The new branch, which is set to open in December 2016, will accommodate the firm’s city centre and North Liverpool sales, lettings and management departments. Marshall Property will also soon be adding to its commercial team and offering clients a full commercial agency service including block and facilities management. Sean Marshall, managing director at Marshall

Property, says: “We are completely overhauling the premises to create a modern workspace which will offer our clients a unique estate agency experience.” Earlier this year Marshall Property was named ‘Best North West Letting Agency’ at the industry’s prestigious ESTAS awards in London. The firm was one of 10 companies nominated for the prize in the regional category, which is handed out based on nominations from clients. Founded in 1986, Marshall Property already has branches elsewhere in Liverpool city centre as well as on Penny Lane and Grassendale.

The ticketed event will take place on Friday 7 October at the Devonshire House Hotel on Edge Lane, featuring a hot buffet, disco, entertainment, comedian, raffle and fun photo booth. Home-Start is a national charity which provides emotional and physical support to families with at least one child under the age of five, often working with households affected by disability, illness or mental health conditions. The organisation is funded by Big Lottery and Children in Need but receives no government capital and therefore has a £30,000 shortfall to address. Ahead of the event in the venue’s Botanic Suite, Angela Morrow, development worker at Home-Start, says: “This [event] is to raise much needed funds for the continuation of our charity and we would very much love any support possible such as buying tickets for the event or providing raffle prizes.” Tickets for the fundraiser, which starts at 7.30pm, are priced at £15 each or £150 for a table of 10 and are available from Home-Start Liverpool. Help to Buy is proving popular at The Avenue at NGV Liverpool

Liverpool homebuyers have reserved 60 of the 200 new homes at the Countryside development on Lewisham Road since the properties were launched 10 months ago. AGENT HAILS ‘INCREDIBLE’ SEPTEMBER AUCTION

This Caldy Road property sold for £23,000 above the guide price 26 Your Move

Sutton Kersh has announced its latest property auction raised almost £7 million, making it one of the most successful sales of the year. The event, which took place at Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza, saw 126 lots go under the hammer including vacant houses, commercial premises and churches. The lots generated a total of £6.8m, with £4.5m in sales on the day and 25 lots sold prior to the auction raising £2.4m. Stand out properties included a fourbedroom semi-detached home on Caldy Road, which went for £123,000, and a three-storey end terrace in St Domingo Vale, which sold for £85,000 - more than double the guide price. Cathy Holt, associate director of auctions at Sutton Kersh, says: “It’s been an incredible September auction and Brexit appears to be having no impact on the confidence in the market. “With such a high percentage of properties sold, some for more than double the guide price, we are seeing a property market in the North West which is performing extremely well.” Sutton Kersh is now inviting entries for its next auction, which takes place on 3 November. The closing date for entries is 7 October. For more information visit www.sutonkersh.co.uk/auctions.

WORDS BY MAT THEW SMITH

The vessel-like One Park West

LIVERPOOL’S ICONIC WATERFRONT IS UNDERGOING A RADICAL REGENERATION WITH DEVELOPERS AND ARCHITECTS OF PROMINENT RESIDENTIAL SCHEMES REMAINING TRUE TO THE CITY’S CHARACTER AND HISTORY TO COINCIDE WITH A RENAISSANCE IN SHIPPING YOUR MOVE LOOKS AT HOW THE CITY’S MARITIME HERITAGE HAS BEEN RETAINED AND HOW IT CAN BE PRESERVED AMIDST VAST PROPOSALS SLATED FOR DEVELOPMENT IN THE YEARS AHEAD

iverpool’s reputation for once being among the world’s most important ports has influenced the design of the city’s waterfront buildings for centuries. The location gained recognition for its distinct heritage assets and historical character in 2004 when UNESCO granted it ‘World Heritage Site’ status as a Maritime Mercantile City. The increase in residential developments in this area has coincided with a renaissance in the city’s shipping industry, leading to concerted efforts to retain shipping links, be it through appearance, materials used or original features. Mann Island is just one site which has been the subject of such an approach. Located within the World Heritage Site, the Mann Island buildings demonstrate how architect Broadway Malyan sensitively designed new structures around an existing set of historic landmarks. The mixed-use angular development comprises 376 residential apartments and its black granite exterior reflects the Three Graces

L

and the River Mersey, whilst its sharp corners resemble the acute shape of a ship’s bow. The nautical-themed names of the Mann Island buildings also demonstrate how new developments have been influenced by shipping and navigation. The building adjacent to the Museum of Liverpool has been aptly named the Latitude Building and the structure with a view over Albert Dock is the Longitude Building. Similarly, architect Brock Carmichael collaborated with concept architect Pelli Clarke Pelli to deliver One Park West. The £70 million residential anchor development is located between Grosvenor’s Liverpool ONE and The Strand, and bares a remarkable resemblance to a large vessel. “The scale and form of One Park West was driven by the desire to form a restrained backdrop to the waterfront buildings and public spaces that did not distract from the prominence of the Three Graces within the World Heritage setting,” says Martin Watson, partner at Brock Carmichael. Martin explains how the project delivered a

HOMES INPIRED BY HERITAGE

“robust technical solution” to the challenges of combining the maritime environment with the requirements of a residential building. Although architects did not consciously attempt to mimic a ship’s shape, Martin indicates that initial plans sought to trace the edges of the elliptical park and The Strand by forming two separate buildings and an acuteangled exterior to bridge the gap between the past and the future. “It is important to recognise and respect the importance of the historic setting, its scale, views, vistas and materiality,” says Martin. “However, each new building needs to be assessed on its own merits within its context without having the need for an enforced solution. The significance of heritage becomes stronger when it’s not diluted by buildings that try to mimic or subtract from the context. It’s a careful balance.” Another building which has been heavily influenced by shipping is Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) Architects’ Dazzle Ship inspired Unity Building. The tower’s exterior explores urban camouflage and can be considered an appropriate addition to the city’s skyline as many of these vessels were painted in Liverpool. However, the industry has also had a more subtle influence. “In our upcoming proposals we subtly echo patterns found in shipping, such as flags used for signalling,” explains Alastair Shepherd, director at Falconer Chester Hall which has worked on projects around the Baltic Triangle district and the £130m refurbishment and redevelopment of a Liverpool southern dockland site. Small modifications, such as the use of maritime colours, can also help to give a building its unique individual character. Alastair alludes to the columns at the historic Albert Dock as an example and indicates they have been painted with the same red oxide coating which is applied to a ship’s hull. One current proposal which has gathered momentum is a newly approved 34-storey tower located on the spacious Princes Dock, which contrasts to the historic density further south. Designed by Falconer Chester Hall, the Moda Living and Apache Capital venture will be named ‘The Lexington, Liverpool’. Alastair explains that the residential block

will reflect the city’s 20th Century transatlantic trade and travel links with a particular emphasis on the importance of the Cunard Line. “We feel deeply about the waterfront and realise that to a certain degree we are tasked with being good stewards of Liverpool’s unique maritime buildings and spaces,” he says. These developments are taking place within the wider context of Peel’s £5.5 billion Liverpool Waters regeneration scheme, which aims to transform a significant part of the waterfront. To ensure shipping links are retained in many of the prominent private sector residential developments along the waterfront, various studies and surveys have been conducted. Due to the nature and the scale of this wider regeneration scheme, consent was based on a Building Characterisation Precedent Public Realm Study and a detailed Cultural Heritage Baseline Study to ensure heritage is appropriately balanced with new scale and character for the future. According to planning applications made to Sefton Council in 2012, the masterplan “takes

advantage of the site’s cultural heritage to integrate it with the new development”. “Liverpool Waters is a massive regeneration scheme and we wanted to attract multiple sectors, including maritime,” explains Ian Pollitt, assistant project director at Liverpool Waters. The land and property giant intends to keep Princes Dock as a maritime hub due to the “well represented” and “growing” nature of the shipping sector. “We are restoring and preserving the remaining docks and bringing them back into use to ensure they remain part of the current future vision of the project,” adds Ian. Architects have also found significant value in salvaging authentic brickwork and in restoring shipping infrastructure from when the waterfront was originally an epicentre for global trade and commerce. Harcourt Developments took on the vast Stanley Dock which saw the Titanic Hotel open in 2014. Extensive preparatory work continues on the second phase of the Dublin-based developers’ scheme, which will include 538 residential apartments at the derelict Tobacco Warehouse. “Stanley Dock was clearly a strategic site in Liverpool and the quality of its design and standard of construction is also a reflection of the large and strategically important port,” says Joe Hynes, property executive at Harcourt Developments. The Tobacco Warehouse was a direct result of the shipping industry, constructed with over 27 million bricks to make it the largest brick building in the world. Its 13 floors are each one hectare in size. Joe explains how materials such as original exposed brick walls and concrete ceiling beams will be retained to reflect shipping links, and emphasises the importance of an appropriate balance to enhance the existing mercantile architecture. “This is a key balancing act in the regeneration of Liverpool,” he says. “The city is fortunate to have a multitude of enviable heritage assets. Tasteful and sensitively designed architecture will be key to retaining its shipping heritage.”

Autumn maintenance tips Clean the gutters

ready the fireplace

Inspect the roof

Check your heating

Your gutters play a huge role in the structural integrity of your home, so keeping them clean will avoid the potentially costly expense of repairs. Cleaning your gutters once a year will ensure they’re not broken or clogged and avoid issues such as damp.

Even if you only use your fireplace occasionally, you should still check for any damage or hazards, especially before you spark up the logs this autumn. Check for any loose bricks, cracks or flue blockages which could make your fireplace dangerous to use.

Your roof is there to protect you and your family, so remember to return the favour with a yearly inspection. Rain, ice and wind can wreak havoc and cause moisture damage and expensive repairs. To prevent this, look for any missing or broken tiles, cracks or signs of moss.

You’ve prepared the exterior of your home against the cold so now it’s time to focus on keeping your interior cosy. Check your central heating by simply giving it a trial run to make sure it’s all running smoothly. Booking a service at the beginning of autumn is also a good idea, as any problems you do find can be resolved before the winter rush.

‘RED DWARF’ WENT SUPERNOVA WHEN IT TOUCHED DOWN ON BBC TWO IN THE LATE S AND REMAINS A CULT FAVOURITE WITH FANS ACROSS THE COSMOS TODAY LISTER RIMMER KRYTEN AND THE CAT HAVE RETURNED FOR AN ELEVENTH SERIES OF SCI-FI PARODY AND SMEG UPS ON DAVE AND YOUR MOVE HAS TAKEN FIVE WITH CO-CREATOR DOUG NAYLOR TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE NEW SEASON THE ABORTED ‘RED DWARF’ MOVIE AND HIS TIME STUDYING IN LIVERPOOL

INTERVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW

‘RED DWARF XI’ MARKS YOUR SECOND FULL SEASON FOR DAVE FOLLOWING THE NINTH INSTALMENT ‘BACK TO EARTH’ HOW IS THIS SERIES DIFFERENT FROM THE LAST ONE? Both series were obviously made by UKTV but series 11 looks much better. It looks like we had a lot more money for this season, although we didn’t. After the success of ‘Red Dwarf X’ I felt we were able to be more ambitious and the response so far has been terrific. At the end of the day it’s all ‘Red Dwarf ’ so series 11 can’t be completely different - there has to be consistency, but I can tell you that the reaction has been incredibly positive with lots of fans praising the production values since the first trailer landed. A ‘RED DWARF’ MOVIE WAS STUCK IN DEVELOPMENT HELL AFTER THE SHOW’S BBC RUN ENDED WERE YOU ALWAYS CONFIDENT THERE WOULD BE MORE ‘DWARF’? You can’t ever be 100% confident in case one of the guys doesn’t want to do it or can’t do it, but I knew they all wanted to make a film. It took a long time not to get the funding we needed, by

which time we probably wasted 10 years. Once we got over that everyone was keen to do more. The biggest difficultly was Craig Charles being in ‘Coronation Street’ but he’s left the soap so that problem has gone away. We just have to make sure Danny John-Jules isn’t doing ‘Death in Paradise’ when we shoot. JUST HOW BIG COULD THE FILM HAVE BEEN IF YOU’D DONE IT AT THE RIGHT TIME? It depends on how much the budget was. We were talking about a very big budget at one point and I was encouraged to rewrite the script to make it more expensive because the bankers who were raising the money didn’t think it was worth their while unless it was a lot of money. If they had raised it, it’s hard to say whether it had made all of that money back. But if the budget had remained below £10 million I think it would have been very successful and done similar business to what ‘The Inbetweeners’ movies have managed. ARE THERE ANY ELEMENTS FROM THE FILM THAT YOU SALVAGED FOR THE TV SHOW? There are definitely elements of the movie in series 10, a few bits and bobs. There were 30odd drafts of the film, cheaper ones and more expensive ones, and in the process of writing and rewriting there were some ideas I managed to salvage. I want to keep the premise of the film under wraps because there’s a good chance we could end up doing something in the future.

YOU AND YOUR FELLOW ‘RED DWARF’ CO-CREATOR ROB GRANT STUDIED PSYCHOLOGY AT UNIVERSITY HERE IN LIVERPOOL DO YOU LOOK BACK ON THAT TIME FONDLY? I don’t look back on it fondly as such. I didn’t like the course I was doing. I realised quite early on it wasn’t for me - I thought it was going to be more about the psychology and less about the statistics, so I didn’t go into uni very often. I decided I wanted to write at that point and was reading a lot of books about how to produce scripts and then, quite rightly, got kicked out at the end of the second year for not doing the work or passing the exams. I did receive one good piece of advice at uni, though. The professor who was kicking me out sat me down and asked me ‘what are you good at? If you think you’re not good at anything, you need to get good at something and do that as a job’. So I took that on board and my main interest at that point was writing scripts. I really liked Liverpool as a city. The people are great, although weirdly when we cast ‘Red Dwarf ’ everyone on TV in a sitcom seemed to be from Liverpool and when Craig Charles emerged as the best person to play Lister in the auditions, I did worry that it was going to look like all these other shows. Of course now, that’s not the case at all. It’s weird how these things move in cycles.

TALENT IN THE CITY

‘RED DWARF XI’ AIRS ON DAVE AT PM ON THURSDAYS

“WHEN WE CAST ‘RED DWARF’ EVERYONE ON TV IN A SITCOM SEEMED TO BE FROM LIVERPOOL I DID WORRY THAT IT WAS GOING TO LOOK LIKE ALL THESE OTHER SHOWS ”

IS STUDYING PSYCHOLOGY WHAT HELPED YOU CREATE SUCH CONVINCING NEUROSIS FOR RIMMER? Psychology is something Rob and I were interested in and it was kind of disappointing that we didn’t really learn much about it at uni. We read books on the subject after the course so I think Rimmer’s neuroses stem from an interest in the topic. YOU’VE SPOKEN AT LENGTH ABOUT THE BREAKDOWN OF YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH ROB IF HE HAD A DRAMATIC CHANGE OF HEART AND WANTED TO RETURN TO ‘RED DWARF’ WOULD YOU BE UP FOR WORKING WITH HIM AGAIN? That’s not for me to say because he was very much the one who wanted to go off and do other things, and he did - he did ‘The Strangers’ and ‘Dark Ages’ as well as his novels. He wanted to work on his own and has certainly never called me and said he wants to write more - I don’t think he would want to, but never say never.

HOW DOES MAKING ‘RED DWARF’ FOR DAVE COMPARE TO MAKING IT FOR THE BBC? DO YOU HAVE MORE CREATIVE FREEDOM NOW? We’ve had creative freedom from both UKTV and the BBC. Nobody has ever really interfered but we never really felt a part of the BBC. We were always outsiders while UKTV are absolutely thrilled that we’re making it and couldn’t do more for us. They couldn’t be more enthusiastic. WHERE WOULD YOU HAVE TAKEN ‘RED DWARF’ IF YOU’D HAD THE CHANCE TO MAKE A NINTH SERIES FOR THE BBC? It would absolutely have gone back to basics after series eight because that season was only a diversion. Rightly or wrongly, we used to throw away the format and that’s what we did in series three - it was quite different from two and six was different from five, eight was different to seven and so on.

& Best for...

HEALTHY BREAKFAST Going out for breakfast doesn’t necessarily mean your morning has to begin with deep fried gluttony and a side helping of extra calories. There are plenty of venues in Liverpool serving up AM feasts which are as easy on the waistline as they are on the taste buds, and we’ve rounded up three of the best for you to try.

WOLF IT DOWN White Wolf Yoga & Kitchen, Cook Street White Wolf Yoga & Kitchen’s breakfast offering is good enough to make health-conscious vegans and vegetarians howl with delight. The Big Boston Breakfast, which consists of seasoned seitan steak and scrambled turmeric tofu served with a warm tortilla wrap and sides of spiced black beans and crushed avocado is among the meatless menu’s highlights.

ECLIPSES THE REST The Moon & Pea, Lark Lane Located in the artisan stronghold of Lark Lane, The Moon & Pea is a top choice for a morning pit stop, with a breakfast and brunch menu packed with fresh and traditional favourites. Its homemade granola with Greek yoghurt, honey and fruit is one of the best healthy alternatives to a calorific fry-up in South Liverpool.

UP YOUR STREET Bakchich, Bold Street Lebanese street food purveyor Bakchich brings a touch of Beirut to Bold Street and is an ideal pick for those who embrace the unconventional. The Full Lebanese Breakfast makes a refreshing change from its English counterpart, with minimal frying and no meat. Instead you’ll be tucking into sumac fried egg, pomegranate seed-studded yoghurt, halloumi cheese and tomatoes.

NOVA RESTAURANT Pensby Road, Heswall, CH60 In the town of Heswall in Wirral sits Nova; a restaurant which offers modern British dining with a relaxed approach. Described as ‘Wirral’s best kept secret’, I was excited to visit to see if it lived up to the hype. Located away from the hustle and bustle of Telegraph Street and its many eateries, Nova is so unassuming you might miss it. The intimate restaurant has a relaxed and cosy vibe with modern décor and is perfect for large or small parties. Arriving on a Thursday evening, we decided on the early doors menu; three courses for £18.50 which offers brilliant value for money. High quality, local and carefully sourced ingredients are of upmost importance at Nova. The menu is reflective of this with a small but delicious selection of dishes. While my dining partner and I browsed the menu, canapés and complimentary homemade bread with oil and balsamic vinegar were brought to the table and were a delightful start to the meal. The black pudding canapé with apple sauce was surprisingly tasty and hinted towards the adventurous flavours to come. To start, I ordered the spiced duck salad with

REVIEW BY HANNAH FOWLER

couscous and cress. The oriental flavour combinations were balanced excellently and the duck was just how you want it: crispy on the outside with soft meat inside. My friend opted for the smoked haddock fishcake with an assortment of leeks. The dish was full of textures with the crispy fishcake pairing perfectly with the creamy sauce and pickled leeks. Throughout the evening the waiting staff were excellent and the service was some of the best I’ve received. Even when the restaurant started to get busy, the staff were always on hand to answer any questions about the menu. Next up was the mains, and my friend chose the chicken and leek pie served with poached chicken, pickled leeks and vegetables. Presented beautifully as a small individual pie, it was encased in delicious pastry and was full of flavour. As with all of Nova’s food, it takes humble British staples to new heights and manages to reinvent even the most traditional of dishes. For my main, I picked the rump of lamb with spiced cauliflower and courgette (£2.50 supplement). The lamb was pink and melted

in the mouth but perhaps the star of the plate was the vegetables. Often an afterthought in some restaurants, the different types of courgette and spiced cauliflower were delicious and it was great to taste everyday produce in a new, exciting way. To end the meal, my dining partner went for the pistachio and dried apricot tart, while I decided on the strawberry panna cotta. The vanilla panna cotta was light and creamy, with a sweet kick from the strawberry jelly. Although I’m not a big fan of jelly, the dessert was a refreshing end to the meal. The taste of my friend’s pistachio and dried apricot tart was reminiscent of a Greek baklava with mixed nutty, sweet flavours. From the first canapé to the final dessert, the presentation and overall aesthetic of the dishes was beautiful. Our enjoyment of food is about so much more than how it tastes, and Nova styles its dishes perfectly to reflect the ingredients used. While there’s sometimes style over substance, this was definitely not the case here. Whether you live in Wirral or across the water, Nova is certainly worth a visit.

LIVERPOOL COMMONWEALTH BID

CHECKING OUT THE COMPETITION BIRMINGHAM

Echo Arena Liverpool is already hosting top sporting events

More than 300,000 extra visitors a year, £600 million of investment, 20,000 new jobs… this is the legacy of Manchester’s 2002 Commonwealth Games. With figures like these it’s not difficult to see why Mayor Joe Anderson and Liverpool City Council are taken with the idea of hosting the 2026 edition. Alongside these headline statistics, when it comes to assessing the impact of the games on our near neighbour’s fortunes, the sports-led regeneration of East Manchester - once one of England’s most underprivileged areas - is hard to ignore. Following Manchester’s successful bid for the games in 1995 the construction of the City of Manchester Stadium, now Manchester City FC’s Etihad Stadium, an athletics stadium and a tennis centre - all in the east of the city - kickstarted the significant regeneration of the area. Development continues to this day with Manchester City FC working alongside Manchester City Council on a number of major projects including the new £18m Manchester Institute of Health and Performance, to be built next to the sprawling Etihad complex. Announcing Liverpool’s intention to explore a bid for the 2026 games, Mayor Anderson said he believed hosting an event of this scale would be an “incredibly important catalyst for regeneration and investment” right here too. Citing the example of Manchester in his letter to culture secretary John Whittingdale, Mayor Anderson stated that the games could deliver a “boost” for deprived parts of North Liverpool. At a recent city council meeting, a cross-party motion welcomed the commitment from the Mayor, suggesting such a bid would “inspire and encourage people to get involved in sport as well as delivering a legacy of regeneration for the city and city region”. The motion added that a successful bid for the games would give Liverpool the chance to replicate Team GB’s Rio Olympic success on a local level. Preparatory work on Liverpool’s bid is underway in anticipation of the Commonwealth Games Federation releasing details in the autumn of what’s expected from the cities interested in bidding.

IS LIVERPOOL READY TO HOST? Funding aside, hosting a major sporting event like the Commonwealth Games would require a network of venues including an athletics stadium, velodrome and swimming pool. Glasgow, host city in 2014, already had 70% of its sports stadia in place ahead of the games boasting three stadiums with capacities exceeding 40,000 (Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden Park), alongside The SEE Hydro arena and various other satellite venues. Anfield Stadium is currently the only arena within Liverpool’s boundaries which comes close – holding just over 54,000 spectators thanks to the recently upgraded Main Stand. Outline planning permission is also in place to extend the Anfield Road stand in the future, feasibly boosting the famous old ground’s capacity to almost 59,000. Across Stanley Park, Mayor Anderson has suggested a new and much needed Everton FC stadium could form part of the bid with the club and the council currently in discussions over two potential sites – one being the current Sound City festival site, Bramley-Moore Dock. The mayor and the council remain tightlipped with regards to which venues could form part of Liverpool’s bid, so discussion of the following sites is simply speculation at this stage. The revamped Anfield will later this year

play host to the Rugby League World Cup Final before the Netball World Championships take place at Echo Arena Liverpool in 2019, showcasing the city’s ability to accommodate two sports which will more than likely feature at the 2026 games. A £90,000 investment from Sport England to refurbish the courts at Liverpool Tennis Centre alongside a £650,000 joint investment from Sport England and England Athletics to revamp track facilities at Wavertree Athletics Centre will no doubt further enhance Liverpool’s chances of lodging a successful bid. As for cycling events, perhaps the £1.4m Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park in Huyton, which features a 400m velodrome built to national competition standards, could be utilised. Away from sport, Mayor Anderson has cited Liverpool’s track record of delivering “high profile, large scale” events including last year’s visit by the Three Queens and 2014’s Giant Spectacular, which brought a combined audience of 2.2m onto the city’s streets. This year Liverpool has again proved its ability to organise and deliver a major global event with the International Festival for Business (IFB) taking place over three weeks in June and welcoming more than 30,000 delegates from 100 countries.

High profile politicians and sporting stars from Britain’s second city have given their backing to a possible ‘Brum’ bid with former Prime Minister David Cameron urging city leaders to “think big” as they consider lodging their interest as hosts. In terms of current venues, the city is mobhanded with a new 50-metre swimming pool at the University of Birmingham; Villa Park football stadium which can hold over 42,000 spectators and The Alexander Stadium recently the subject of a £12.5m redevelopment programme which included the addition of a 5,000 seater stand.

LONDON Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has received a proposal to bid for the 2026 games centered on South London. As part of the plans, Crystal Palace National Sports Centre would undergo a substantial refurbishment. The capital has not staged the Commonwealth Games since 1934, when it was still known as the Empire Games, and it’s hoped the event could unlock the untapped potential of the area south of the River Thames.

EDMONTON CANADA Financial issues led to the withdrawal of Edmonton’s bid for the 2022 games, but Canada’s fifth largest city hasn't given up on hosting the event just yet and is thought to be planning to return with a renewed bid for 2026. Host city in 1978, Edmonton has an impressive list of venues including a number which were opened for the games almost 40 years ago, chief amongst them being the Commonwealth Stadium - Canada’s biggest stadium, with a capacity of over 50,000.

AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND Details on a possible bid from New Zealand’s largest city are scarce, however if the ‘City of Sails’ did decide to join the race for 2026 it’s already well stocked when it comes to venues. The destination is home to a considerable number of rugby union, cricket and rugby league arenas including the country’s biggest stadium Eden Park, which can hold up 60,000 spectators.

PORT MOSLEY PAPA NEW GUINEA At first glance the capital of Papa New Guinea may seem like an unusual candidate to host the games but Port Mosley is in fact a rapidly expanding city well versed in holding major sporting events. The city’s intention to bid for the 2026 games was revealed during the closing ceremony of the Pacific Games in 2015, and later this year it will welcome 17 teams for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
