CONTENTS

EDITOR’S LETTER An ambitious multi-million pound project is underway to breathe new life into Liverpool’s Chinatown. As groundworks pave the way for the development of new homes and commercial units to start physically taking shape, what better time to get the lowdown on how the major scheme is expected to progress. In this issue we catch up with David Choules, chairman of developer North Point Global, to get the latest and find out what lies ahead for the project in light of the Brexit result. Plus Liverpool-based songwriting duo Sodajerker chat to Your Move about their craft and how they’ve shot to podcasting success, interviewing iconic names like Paul Simon and Johnny Marr. And with 2016 proving to be a milestone year for several landmark theatres, we delve into their star-studded histories.

WORDS BY NATASHA YOUNG

IN WITH THE IN RECENT MONTHS WORK HAS BEGUN TO TRANSFORM LIVERPOOL’S CHINATOWN – HOME TO EUROPE’S OLDEST CHINESE COMMUNITY PHASE ONE OF A THREESTAGE MILLION REGENERATION SCHEME NAMED ‘NEW CHINATOWN’ IS NOW UNDERWAY PUTTING THE WHEELS IN MOTION TO EVENTUALLY DELIVER HUNDREDS OF NEW HOMES ALONGSIDE BRAND NEW RETAIL AND COMMERCIAL UNITS AND A HOTEL YOUR MOVE TALKS TO DAVID CHOULES CHAIRMAN OF DEVELOPER NORTH POINT GLOBAL TO FIND OUT HOW THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO EVOLVE WHAT IT WILL MEAN FOR ITS SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES AND THE WIDER CITY CENTRE AND WHETHER BREXIT WILL HAVE ANY IMPACT

new

Now that phase one work has begun on site, how is the project progressing so far? There’s another three weeks of the piling stage of groundworks, then the frame contractor will start and will work on the pile caps and foundations. He starts in the third week in July so we’ll see [the development] come out of the ground in the not so distant future. Sales are going well. At the last count we’d sold 46 out of 127 residential units, although there may be slightly more. We launched it to the market about six weeks ago so it’s gone quite quickly, although in all honesty I don’t think it’s gone as quickly as we thought it would go. Brexit, the anticipation, the unknown and the situation we’ve got now most certainly softened interests. We came out the first weekend and sold 15 units in one weekend. The next months there were 15 and seven and it’s trundled along at about 10 units per month. We’ve got the funding to see it delivered so we’re not anxious. We just have to be patient and see what happens.

In light of the vote for Brexit, what is the outlook for the scheme moving forward? We’ve seen things slow down and we just need to be calm. We’ve got to track where sterling goes, the pound relative to where it is in the marketplace, and it’s up and down like a yo-yo at the moment. I think once things stabilise, the repositioning may make the UK a more attractive investment. At the end of the day we’ve got so much infrastructure and so many good things going on, particularly in Liverpool with the likes of the academic side and the hospital and the amount of energy the city has been putting in. We’ve got to back ourselves, back the city and back the scheme and we want to see it being delivered. It’s going to breathe so much good life into the area, linking the Baltic Triangle to Ropewalks with a commercial offering which is really exciting. We’ve got 113,000 sq ft of small units which have been snapped up, and will create a really punchy bazaar with lots of life and vibrancy.

p21-40_p03-12 05/07/2016 10:43 Page 27

HOT TOPIC

Can you tell us anything about the businesses who have taken up those commercial units? They’re individuals, investors. We’ve launched it in China and Hong Kong and it’s been well received. It’s about extending Chinatown and refreshing what hasn’t had a lot of investment for a long time. Through the Tier 1 entrepreneur’s visa programme, with each commercial space the interest is to acquire a small unit that’s affordable and although that doesn’t give a visa, by then bringing the business into Liverpool, running that business for five years and being an active part of it they can then apply for a visa. To leave China it may take six to eight weeks to get a visa and Brexit is not going to affect that. That’s why people want to up sticks or bring commerce to this area and off the back of it get far less hampered travel around the world. What kind of commercial and retail offer are you looking to bring to the area? The planning gives us permission for A1 (shops), A2 (financial and professional services), A3 (restaurants and cafés), A4 (drinking establishments), B1 (business), B2 (general industrial), D1 (non-residential institutions) and D2 (assembly and leisure) so as many uses, however because they’re all leaseholds there will be controls to avoid, say, a line of fish and chip shops. There’s a gate they’ve got to go through and we won’t unreasonably withhold that but we don’t want to suddenly see uses becoming something which are not what the city needs or wants. Where has the funding for the New Chinatown scheme come from? We’ve self-funded the land acquisition because two sites were owned by Liverpool City Council and the third site was owned by Urban Splash – it used to be called the Tribeca scheme. The construction is funded through the retail investment scheme, so an investor will buy and deposit generally up to 50% and that 50% is then released to fund the construction. How will the project as a whole take shape? From October next year [phase one] will be finished. The next two phases have only got outline planning but, through the discussions we’re having the moment, we’ve got housing associations interested, PRS (Private Rented Sector) funds are interested in bringing external PRS in, we have a hotelier interested and we have residential developers and funds interested. We’ll choose which pathway we’re going to take to ensure it’s delivered in the near future and that will then trigger the detailed planning process. At the moment with all the ancillary stuff and ground investigation works, for instance we have a railway tunnel which runs along Great George Street and the vent shaft which has to maintain being open at all times, there are discussions going on which will affect planning and the design. In terms of what sits above the ground we have

some real must-haves including the walk through, the public space, the animation; there’s no point creating monoliths with no reason to pass through. BLOK Architecture is the architect and is working it up at a go-slowly stage at my bequest until we know how it’s going to be funded, and then we’ll crystalise the detailed planning. I’m sure the council and others want to see it moving quicker, but we’re not just going to go into phases two and three. To actually get detailed planning we’ve probably got to find another £1m which you can’t magic up, so you need to take your time. I think by 2020 we’ll be finished. It’s a three or four-year programme and we’re not sitting on our thumbs. How many homes will be delivered overall, and who will they be for? It’s 791 homes at the moment but the mix may change. They’ll be partly for homeowners, so we’ll have local people wanting to buy them. The design of each phase has a generous reception area so [they may attract] postgraduates and young professionals on the rental market who expect a little more than just an apartment. A limited concierge service will take deliveries and organise things for them. The townhouses in the scheme are a slightly different proposition, so it’s varied. Also, particularly with the later phases where you’ve got 100,000 sq ft of small broken up units, they’re not designed as work and live but people

are investing in the work and taking the live, so we’ve got owner occupiers in respect of the commercial proposition as well as the residential proposition. How will New Chinatown work alongside the present Chinatown? We’ve had a number of meetings with the community and elders. They’ve really embraced [New Chinatown] because they’ve seen it as a piece of scrubland for an awful long time. They want to see it delivered first and foremost. At the moment they’ve got a very small office meeting place, so we’ve spoken about a community place as part of the ground floor offering within phase three. It’d be a bit of a museum, information centre, meeting place and flexible community space. Part of our phase two and phase three proposition is bringing in that as part of the design, which we hadn’t considered when we got outline planning. Why is now the right time to transform this site into New Chinatown? It’s an area we see booming, and in respect of the city centre coming down through the docks and into the Baltic area, we saw it as a gateway opportunity. From the commercial side it’s a good area to be looking at too. It’s far more developer friendly to be taking brownfield sites rather than regenerating city centre sites which are more costly per sq ft.

“IT’S ABOUT EXTENDING CHINATOWN AND REFRESHING WHAT HASN’T HAD A LOT OF INVESTMENT FOR A LONG TIME”

NEWS ‘Overwhelming’ level of entries for NWPAs Organisers of the NWPAs have been “overwhelmed” by the level of entries submitted for this year’s event. The annual awards ceremony by Move Publishing recognises the businesses and people whose vision and commitment continue to drive the North West property sector, with accolades being presented across 12 categories. Following an extension of the original deadline, residential and commercial property firms had until 7 July to enter the awards and strong entries are said to have been submitted across the board. Categories for 2016 include Residential Property Agency of the Year, Best Affordable Home and Property Apprentice. Tables for the glittering event have sold out in record time.

The NWPAs have attracted backing from some of the biggest names in the industry, including headline sponsor Forth Homes, and recently added Liverpool-based Furnish That Room as drinks reception sponsor. Kim O’Brien, director of Move Publishing, says: “The North West property industry has a great deal to be proud of and the NWPAs is an opportunity to applaud the people, projects and companies who are leading the way. “We’ve been overwhelmed with the quality and quantity of entries and we can’t wait to hand them over to our expert panel of judges.” A shortlist of finalists will be selected prior to this year’s ceremony, which will take place on 20 October at Lutyens Crypt, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

A high level of entries has been received for all 12 awards

NORTHWOOD’S LIVERPOOL BRANCH CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY

Northwood’s Liverpool director, Peter Bellamy

Estate agent Northwood is celebrating 10 years of trading in Liverpool, having opened its doors in West Derby Village in early 2006. Since branching out into Merseyside the company has enjoyed a successful decade, expanding to 85 high street branches nationwide with more than 20,000 landlords and a group turnover in excess of £70 million. Recalling the early challenges he faced launching in Liverpool, the city’s Northwood director Peter Bellamy says: “I decided to invest in a Northwood franchise because they had a good track record of being in business and they already had 30 established branches across the UK.

“We’ve faced plenty of challenges along the way - a credit crunch, one or two recessions and even our office requiring rebuilding only nine months after its launch due to an untimely explosion outside the building, caused by the failure of a high voltage underground cable. We’ve overcome all these difficulties and many more to establish a thriving business.” The Northwood brand was founded 20 years ago with a focus on Guaranteed Rent schemes, which it continues to specialise in today, while also providing estate agency services of sales, lettings and property management. For more information call Northwood on 0151 256 1035.

DEMAND FOR HOMES CONTINUES DESPITE BREXIT SAYS REDROW Redrow claims the result of the EU referendum has not impacted on demand for its latest properties. The house builder says more than 1,500 visitors turned up at four of its new developments during the weekend after Brexit was confirmed, noting particularly high interest at Redbridge Park in Fazakerley. Sales releases for properties at Redbridge Park, which will eventually feature 60 three and fourbedroom homes, are being managed in phases with show homes set to open in August. Sean Miley, a 25-year-old civil servant, and his fiancé Charlotte, 23, were among the first to snap up a house at the development, which is expected to be ready later this year or during early 2017.

According to Sean, the Brexit vote had made the couple think about their purchase however they decided to press ahead. He says: “No one really knows what will happen and whether we’ll be directly affected. At the end of the day we need somewhere to live and we know what’s in our price range. Life goes on!” The homes are being built on the former Redbridge and Bank View high schools site, and quick sales are also said to have followed similar demand at Redrow’s Knights Park in Woolton. Claire Jarvis from Redrow says: “It shows that there is pent-up demand for quality new homes in all parts of the city.” For more information call Redrow on 0151 306 2188.

GREEN LIGHT FOR PARKLANDS REDESIGN Planning permission has been approved for a significant redesign of Liverpool’s Parklands development. New plans by house builder New City Vision Liverpool Ltd include an increase in the number semi-detached and detached homes at the Norris Green scheme. The number of three-bedroom ‘Maple’ and four-bedroom ‘Oak’ style properties have also been boosted following “unprecedented” public demand. Louise Craven, sales manager at New City Vision Liverpool, says: “Planning permission for the site remix was confirmed last week. We’re absolutely delighted. “Demand for the three-bedroom ‘Maple’ style houses has been particularly strong.” As an extra incentive for potential homeowners, Parklands is now offering its ‘House of the week’. Plot 288, a threebedroom Maple style home, is available for £137,996 through Help to Buy with stamp duty and legal fees all included. Features of the ‘Maple’ style home include a kitchen and diner, storage space throughout and en suite facilities to the master bedroom. For more information on Parklands visit www.parklandsliving.co.uk.

More ‘Maple’ style homes will be built under the new plans

MASONRY FIRM COMPLETES ‘CHALLENGING’ NEW BUILD PROJECT Bootle-based masonry company Tony Ferry & Sons has completed one of its most “challenging” projects at an exclusive new build property in Aughton. The firm recently finished installing a new bespoke kitchen worktop at the Granville Park home, which has gone on the market for just under £1 million. Mike Ferry, director at Tony Ferry & Sons, says: “It was probably the most challenging piece of work we have done due to the high level of finish which all had to be done by hand. “I’m delighted with the very modern look we have been able to achieve. “It’s something different to what we normally do but it’s certainly something we want to do more of in the future.” The company is also working on a number of leisure projects in Liverpool city centre including Gatsby’s Bar on Victoria Street and the soon to be open Santa Maluco pizza and cocktail bar on Water Street. The family-run firm specialises in granite, marble and stone masonry work on a broad range of jobs from kitchen work surfaces to commercial and retail projects. Work on the bespoke worktop was done by hand

TALENT LIVERPOOL-BASED SONGWRITERS SIMON BARBER AND BRIAN O’CONNOR WORK TOGETHER UNDER THE NAME ‘SODAJERKER’ BUT ASIDE FROM SHOWCASING THEIR SKILLS BY CREATING THEIR OWN MUSICAL MATERIAL THEY’VE SHOT TO SUCCESS IN RECENT YEARS WITH THEIR ACCLAIMED ‘SODAJERKER ON SONGWRITING’ PODCAST SERIES FOCUSING ON THE CRAFT HAVING INTERVIEWED A LENGTHY LIST OF MUSICAL ICONS FOR THE SHOW FROM RUFUS WAINWRIGHT AND JOHNNY MARR TO NICK LOWE AND BEN FOLDS FIVE THE DUO TOOK TIME OUT TO CHAT TO YOUR MOVE ABOUT THE SECRETS TO THE SERIES’ SUCCESS SONGWRITING LESSONS LEARNED AND THEIR WISH LIST OF GUESTS

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

What were your initial ideas behind the podcast? S: We’d been playing together in bands at school and then started writing songs under the name Sodajerker, but we thought there was more to us than the music - we wanted to put our personalities across and engage with an audience. We started thinking about a podcast and were fans of amazing podcasts like ‘WTF with Marc Maron’ and ‘The Nerdist’. We liked the longform conversation format. There were one or two shows by major networks but no one really talking about the nuts and bolts of songwriting, certainly not in the UK, so we got in early and cornered the market. People often find podcasts through recommendations. Yours has featured a lot in ‘essential’ podcast charts so it must be rewarding to receive such recognition? B: Definitely. In spite of that most of our success has come from word of mouth and, although those endorsements are nice and get you attention here and there, it’s about people discovering it and telling their friends and before you know it you’ve got an audience. Does that help with getting interviewees? You’ve had some iconic guests so far. B: It can but it helps that we managed to get great guests in the first two episodes - Billy Steinberg and Todd Rundgren - so when we contacted other potential guests they’d see that we’d had those people on and they’d go ‘if they were on then I’ll do it’. It validated us early on. Given the songwriting credentials of guests you’ve featured, who has given you the best advice and what was it? S: Some people are great talkers and tellers of stories. Lamont Dozier, the big Motown songwriter, had amazing stories. He’s been in the business for decades and seen it all. Others are very technical and theoretical about songwriting and they’re able to tell you exactly how they put a certain chord sequence together or how they constructed a particular melody. Andy Partridge from XTC ticked all those boxes. He’s a great musician; really able to articulate his process and also really funny and a great storyteller. B: One piece of advice that stands out to me is from Mike Batt, who’s probably best known for writing ‘The Wombles’ theme but is a great

songwriter and arranger. He was referring to writers’ block and mentioned something he used to tell his young daughter. When she wanted to draw a picture but couldn’t think of anything to draw, he’d say ‘just make a mark on the paper, then once you’ve made the mark that will lead to something else’. He says you can apply that to the process of songwriting. You might be drawing a blank but if you just do something and even if it’s rubbish, that rubbish might turn into something good if you follow it through. Has other writers’ insight helped your own songwriting since you’ve been doing the podcasts? B: We’ve always been the kind of people who remember things people say and a lot of songwriters are like that - they’re always writing down quotes, unusual phrases, strange combinations or words they see everywhere. When we write we’re constantly reproducing quotes or advice from people and we’ll go off and do it, so it informs our approach quite a lot. S: Sometimes it’s not a conscious thing but you’ll write a song, demo it and listen back and you can identify certain characteristics you’ve absorbed from people you’ve spoken to. So maybe you think ‘that’s a Gilbert O’Sullivan move’ but it’s only after the fact that you think clearly you’ve been influenced by that person. Who’s still on your interviewee wish list? S: We’ve got a healthy list of people we’d love to speak to and that’s one of the great things about the podcast; we never run out because we’re so fascinated and there’s all these great songwriters. McCartney is the Holy Grail, and then there’s Springsteen, Billy Joel, Randy Newman and Tom Petty. We recently got Paul Simon which we never expected, so that was one ticked off the very top of the wish list. Do your industry links help you track such iconic musicians down and get them to open up more? S: They relate to us during interviews in a way they maybe don’t relate to others because we understand music from the same perspective. We can mention very specific details in songs and it makes them think ‘these guys know what they’re talking about’. At the same time, we started by asking people to be on the podcast and that was nothing to do with our background as musicians. A lot of the time people maybe don’t ask these people to do it, they think it’s out of their league, but we’re quite hard-faced and I’ll gently ask every three to four weeks until they eventually cave!

What are your main songwriting focuses and inspirations? S: We’d like to write more songs; ironically the podcast takes away a lot of that time. We’ve been bowled over by the response as we’ve got thousands of people downloading it and we get loads of emails, so we spend less time than we’d like writing songs. We’re trying to redress that balance and we’re inspired by people we interview and music we were listening to long before we started the podcast and we just carry out the process most typical songwriters do. We sit together and try and hone in on a particular phrase or title we’ve had for a while or a chord sequence and we try and flesh it out and see what happens. How has being based in Liverpool affected your music career? S: We’re fans of the music history of Liverpool – the Beatles, the eras of music that followed and the big bands that have come out of the city. Having more Liverpool people on the show is something we’d like to do although they seem harder to get than some others. B: It’s strange, we’re approaching 90 episodes and we’ve had two Scousers on in five years. It’s not for the want of trying either, it’s just how it’s worked out. S: It’s a city with a big musical history and culture around music. We draw a lot from it, not in the sense of when people make documentaries about music and talk about a city informing their work and how the River Mersey feeds into it. We’re not poetic about it but there’s a big infrastructure for music here and it’s on the map as a music city in the way a lot of others aren’t. I think it helps with podcast guests too. You made a BBC World Service documentary recently. Are you looking to continue in that direction? B: We always had in mind that we’d love to do a documentary. We were contacted by the head of current affairs who happened to be a fan of the show and said they were looking for music content so would we like to do something based on our archive of interviews. We thought ‘fantastic’. We’ve since found it went down well with the powers that be and they’re interested in doing more in the future, but we’re definitely going to keep doing the podcast for as long as we find guests. Do you have any other projects in the pipeline? S: We’re trying to develop an album of our own material and racing towards 100 episodes of the podcasts. There’s music we’re writing, podcasts and possible documentaries on the horizon so we’re busy.

& Best for...

A SUMMER FEAST As we approach the business end of this year’s Wimbledon championship and look forward to a packed programme of local festivals, thoughts of planning a classic summer picnic spring to mind. To make things easier we’ve highlighted three of the best places on Merseyside to grab yourself everything you need for a proper summer feast that wouldn't look out of place on the finest Cambridge lawn.

FIRST SERVE Sandhill Strawberry Farm, Rainhill Punters go through 28,000 kg of strawberries every year at Wimbeldon. If you fancy picking a few punnets of your own then head on over to this picturesque Rainhill farm to give it a try. Open every day from May until early August, you won’t get fresher than this.

ACE DELIVERY The Moon & Pea, Lark Lane One of Lark Lane’s most popular eateries offers made-to-order picnics from its tiny deli with ingredients including fresh chorizo and homemade pies all packaged in an authentic wicker basket. Throw in a location just a stone’s throw from Sefton Park and your afternoon is sorted.

MATCH POINT Turtle Bay, Victoria Street

A Wimbledon favourite and top tipple at any self-respecting garden party, the herbal tonic Pimm’s is typically served with lemonade or ginger ale. Victoria Street’s Turtle Bay has put its own unique Caribbean twist on the British classic mixing a glug of Pimm’s No.1 Cup with fresh mint, strawberries, cucumber, lime, ginger, orange and passion fruit.

JAM RESTAURANT & TEA BAR

Sir Thomas Street, L1 With its contemporary décor and extensive menu, the new Jam Restaurant and Tea Bar offers an eclectic mix of brunch, afternoon tea and evening meals. As my date and I entered we were warmly welcomed by the waitress Eve, who showed us to our table. Immediately we were impressed with the potential and contrast, as the combination of a modern, monochrome interior and a wide range of background music enhanced the overall ambience of the restaurant. Pleased with the extensive drinks menu, my date and I ordered refreshing Mojitos (£5.90), served with conventional limes and mint leaves. The bartender who served us, Andy, was knowledgeable, innovative and attentive, and his enthusiasm was infused into the presentation of the drinks. Onto the food and to start my date ordered the unique Edible Garden Salad (£4.50), whilst I ordered the Ethical Fishcakes (£5.50) served with avocado puree and chilli jam. The avocado puree complemented the refreshing bed of salad, and the chilli jam added spice and sweetness to the fishcakes. My date noted the Edible Garden Salad was pleasantly unusual, and the speed of service was second

REVIEW BY MATTHEW SMITH to none. We were then served a sorbet to cleanse our pallets which included raspberries, blueberries and strawberries, all garnished with small edible flower petals - an appropriate mix for the advent of summer. Following this, my date ordered the medium cooked Hand Cut Rare Breed Succulent Sirloin Steak (£20.90), served with confit tomatoes, large hand cut game crisps and a garlic compound butter, giving the dish a remarkably robust flavour. I ordered the Cod on Crushed Jersey Royals (£12.50), served with chive butter sauce and poached hen’s egg. As expected, the cod was soft and white and was complemented by the chive butter sauce. As I cut into the poached hen’s egg the yolk trickled over the cod which, when combined with the sauce, enhanced its flavour. Following the main course, an off-menu Chocolate Brownie served with edible flowers and vanilla ice cream was recommended to my date. I ordered the Lemon and Coconut Sponge (£6), served with honeycomb ice cream,

macaroons and edible flowers, the latter of which were a consistent feature of the dishes throughout this meal. As we began discussing our feast, we were encouraged to try one of 26 teas, all sourced from Scotland. A large selection ranging from vanilla to strawberry and kiwi were available. Eve recommended the Japanese Cherry (£3) and my date was impressed with how the flavour of green tea balanced well with the delicate hint of cherry. For me, the passionfruit and orange tea (£3) sounded particularly attractive, blending particularly well with Keemun China Leaf tea. After the meal we met the manager, Joe, who told us about his aim to invest in tablet devices so customers can view important information relating to the contents of the free-from food before purchase. My date and I both agreed Jam could become a perennially popular restaurant within Liverpool’s wide range of premium offerings, especially with staff like Andy, Eve and Joe.

LIV SOUTH

The Seasons Art Classes, currently taking place at Liverpool Cricket Club, are now over halfway through their fantastic 14 week curriculum. So far we have had fun covering pencil drawing, oil pastels and watercolour painting and we are shortly moving on to acrylic paints. Many of our students who were absolute beginners, have begun to produce some stunning pieces of Art thanks to the comprehensive inputs from our tutor, Katie Musgrove. Our students will be showing off their new found skills at an exhibition at the Cricket Club on 2nd August. Students come on our courses for a variety of reasons: whether to improve at their hobby, enjoy other people’s company, experience the tranquility Art can bring, improve fine motor skills or simply learn to draw something recognisable!  Whatever their reason for coming, the feedback from our students has been fantastic, so we are now taking bookings for our Autumn Course which starts 13th September. Also owing to popular demand, we are looking to launch our first Evening Classes and a second venue in Formby. Places on our classes are extremely limited to ensure every student gets the appropriate level of support, so if you think this could be for you, please ring Alyson on 0151 722 0501 to reserve your place!

SPOTLIGHT ON LIVERPOOL THEATRES

A ROYAL GUEST A theatre has stood proudly on the corner of Lime Street since 1866 when the Alexandra opened its doors, passing the thespian baton onto the Empire in 1925. Now one of Liverpool’s most important cultural landmarks, the venue will celebrate 150 years of performing arts at the site in 2016 with a visit from a special royal guest. Prince Edward will attend a Royal Gala performance of ‘Blood Brothers’ on 29 September, accompanied by a regal entourage. This won’t be the first time the Empire has hosted royalty, with two Royal Command Performances and a Royal Variety Performance taking place at the Neoclassical building in the past. Other highlights from its history include appearances by Laurel and Hardy and Frankie Vaughn in the 1950s and The Beatles at the peak of their popularity a decade later. These days, it’s a go-to place for hit stage shows, from ‘Les Miserables’ to ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. The current incarnation of the Empire is larger than the Alexandra before it, but the original building’s proscenium arch was retained and remains one of its most recognisable features. Since the turn of the millennium, renovation work has brought the building up to date by adding a glass atrium containing the box office, bar and three floors of multi-function space to its façade.

T HE PL AY HOU SE TURNS 150 Like the Empire, the Liverpool Playhouse also celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, having begun life as the Star Concert Hall in 1866. Since becoming a theatre in 1912, the venue has played host to legendary thespians, including Anthony Hopkins, Michael Gambon, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen. The Playhouse continued to attract big names into the 20th century, with David Scase, Leslie Lawton, and William Gaunt among those handed artistic tenures there. In 2000, the Playhouse joined forces with the Everyman to form the Liverpool & Merseyside Theatres Trust under joint chief executives Gemma Bodinetz and Deborah Aydon. The Everyman & Playhouse will soon be announcing their autumn season which will include details of how the Playhouse’s 150th anniversary will be marked.

A P I CT UR E OF T H E PAS T

The Epstein Theatre became an unexpected addition to the 100 club in 2016 when a local historian discovered evidence proving it opened three years later than originally reported. Dingle scholar Philip Mayer unearthed documents which indicate the Grade II-listed Hanover Street venue launched as Crane’s Concert Hall on 3 February 1916. The Epstein has had turbulent history since being purchased by the Liverpool Corporation and renamed The Neptune Theatre in 1967. When the venue was threatened with closure in the early ‘90s, a number of high-profile performers including Dame Judi Dench fought its corner. Following a stint as a comedy club, it was shut down in 2005 before a £1.2 million refurb brought it back into use as the Epstein, named in honour of former Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Since then, it’s found success as a comedy, music and theatre venue, attracting big stars to a relatively small stage. Highlights from its back catalogue include Broadway show ‘Lennon Through a Glass Onion’, the Sound City music festival and a BBC shoot with Steve Coogan.

Not one to be upstaged, the Royal Court Theatre is piecing together the past to create a complete picture of its history as it approaches its 80th anniversary. The theatre’s documented history was patchy, with no written archive covering the period from 1943 onwards, so the Royal Court Trust made a call to anyone who’s seen a show, worked there or performed on its stage since to tell their stories at a special event last month. The Our Stories campaign topped up the Royal Court’s archive and the materials gathered are due to appear in an exhibition organised in conjunction with Liverpool John Moores University later this year. Members of the public are still welcome to contribute artefacts and memories. Although the site’s heritage stretches further back, the Royal Court as we know it opened in 1938 as a striking Art Deco venue for plays and concerts. In the ensuing years, the theatre drew huge names such as Ivor Novello, Richard Burton and Judi Dench, who made her professional stage debut there, aged 22. In 1980, the theatre was snapped up by two former Liverpool taxi drivers who took it in a radically different direction, positioning it as a rock and pop venue. Highlights from this illustrious chapter of its life include Slade’s final concert with their original line-up, Def Leppard music video shoots and performances from REM, U2, Rage Against the Machine and George Michael, who have all achieved global stardom. These days, the theatre is embracing its roots by hosting popular stage productions including ‘Brick Up the Mersey Tunnel’, ‘Slappers and Slapheads’ and Willy Russell’s ‘Stags and Hens’. The building itself is also undergoing a phased transformation, with plans in motion to turn the neighbouring Penny Farthing pub into a pre and post-show drinks venue.

BESIDE THE SEASIDE Theatre is a great tradition across the Liverpool City Region, with venues in areas like Southport and New Brighton also flying the flag for performing arts. The Atkinson in Southport is just two years shy of its 140th anniversary, having launched as the Atkinson Art Gallery and Library in 1878. Its current incarnation, which opened in 2013, plays a vital role in the community as cultural hub housing theatre space, a studio, cafe, shop, exhibition spaces, library and a museum. New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion celebrated its centenary three years ago but the version which rose from its foundations during the town’s regeneration in 2008 is unrecognisable from the venue which drew international stars like Ben E King and Geno Washington during the seaside town’s heyday. That isn’t to say the contemporary Floral Pavillion is any less important to New Brighton, however, now hosting a range of shows from theatre productions to comedy gigs, including sell-out performances from international acts like Russell Watson, John Bishop, and Marc Almond.
