MODERN & MINIMALIST

SIMPLE CHIC AND SPACIOUS HOMES TO BUY AND LET IN LIVERPOOL

£1,275,000 Guide price FULLWOOD PARK, AIGBURTH, L17 This unique, award-winning home is the epitome of chic, modern style. Spacious rooms including the open plan kitchen and dining area feature minimalist décor, allowing the striking concrete structure and a generous amount of natural light to do the talking. A contemporary ‘Kalfire’ double sided log burning fire is among the eye-catching features of the five-bedroom home, which is surrounded by large established gardens.

£174,950 CABLE HOUSE, CHEAPSIDE, L2 Less is more in this beautifully presented two-bedroom city centre apartment. Subtle hints of colour and patterns are coupled with simple stand-out features throughout the home, which offers light, bright, spacious living. In the bathroom, a feature wall of wooden panels and mirrors adds character and simple storage without appearing overpowering.

CITY RESIDENTIAL /

£600pcm PEPPERMINT WAY, NORRIS GREEN, L11 White walls and curtains matched with some soft grey tones make way for a few dashes of vibrant colour to take centre stage in this stylish bedroom. A sparing blast of blues and yellows turns the bed into a striking centrepiece of the room – one of two bedrooms in the newly built semi-detached home to let. Meanwhile small decorative wall features, some of which double up as shelving, create a feature wall whilst making the best of the space on offer without closing the room in.

WORDS BY NATASHA YOUNG

EUROPE

IN OR OUT? ON JUNE THE NATION WILL DECIDE WHETHER BRITAIN SHOULD REMAIN AS PART OF THE EUROPEAN UNION OR WHETHER IT SHOULD LEAVE BUT WHAT WILL IT ALL MEAN FOR LIVERPOOL – A CITY WHICH HAS BEEN NOTED FOR ITS POPULARITY AMONGST PROPERTY INVESTORS IS AN ONGOING DESTINATION OF CHOICE FOR STUDENTS ACROSS THE UK AND OVERSEAS AND IS CURRENTLY A HUB OF NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS? WE CAUGHT UP WITH A RANGE OF EXPERTS ON LIVERPOOL’S PROPERTY MARKET AND PROMINENT CITY DEVELOPERS TO GET THEIR VIEWS ON WHETHER WE SHOULD BE IN OR OUT OF THE EU AND HOW THE VOTE COULD HAVE AN IMPACT

E L L I OT L AW L E S S

LOUIS ANASTASIOU

Director of property developer Elliot Group, which has prominent projects underway in Liverpool’s Wolstenholme Square and the Baltic Triangle

Managing director of Liverpool estate and le ings agency Andrew Louis, which has branches in and out of the city centre

“I’m firmly in the remain camp. The referendum has created flux in the market and we’ve seen a slight slowing up of investment sentiment for UK property assets whilst some investors sit out the referendum period. “If the vote ends up being for Brexit then that period of uncertainty will continue whilst investors wait to see which way the wind blows during exit negotiations. “Conversely, if the outcome is remain then I’m expecting the tap to be turned right back on and we’ll see a mini boom as projects get kickstarted. That has to be good for the region.”

“If we vote to remain in the EU it will be back to business relatively quickly and the Liverpool property market will continue to prosper due to growing population, increase in tourism and strong demand. “If we vote out I don’t think anyone has quite worked out what that means other than uncertainty. “Maybe Brexit may result in lower property prices if immigration from Europe fell.”

EXPERT INSIGHT HOT TOPIC

ST EV E BA R B E R

GEORGE D OW N IN G

Managing director of Merseyside-based Bridging Finance Solutions, which provides short-term finance to property developers and investors

Founder of the Downing property group, which is behind developments including prominent student accommodation sites in the city

“Major firms from across the world come to the UK to access Europe’s single market, bringing with them jobs and investment. While Brexit may not be ruinous for the UK economy, it does risk damaging the UKbased financial services sector, particularly over the short term, potentially delaying investment and lending decisions in the region and reducing activity. It also threatens the overall competitiveness of the UK as a place to do business. “It’s this suggestion of delaying investment decisions and reducing activity which may be most damaging to the financial service industry and the UK's position as a global economics hub. “Will foreign funders want to maintain a ‘European’ presence in a country outside of the EU? If not, this will potentially reduce liquidity for the UK property market at large and the Merseyside region.”

“My feeling is that the UK should be in charge of its own destiny – so I am in favour of an exit. “I accept there would be some disruption in the short term to my company and the markets we operate in. But we have to take a longer term view of our own best interests. “I think the Brussels empire costs a fortune and does not represent our interests particularly well. It is too bureaucratic and too legislative. If we do stay in, that needs to change. “I reject the idea that we’d struggle to trade with European partners or anyone else. Switzerland does well enough - and the Germans will still want to sell us BMWs and Mercedes. That said, the key here is that whether as a country we decide to stay or leave it is the uncertainty that unsettles the investment market. So the sooner this issue is resolved the better. ”

DA N P E NNI NGTO N

DAN IELLE JOYCE

Director of Century 21, which has estate and le ings agency branches in both North and South Liverpool

Development manager of Merseyside-based housing developer Forth Homes

“Particularly when it comes to the housing and mortgage markets, I think you have to trust the judgement of those who should have all the information at their fingertips to understand the full implications. “While the ‘leave’ campaign might call it “scaremongering” when you hear the Bank of England governor talking about potential negative impacts – falling house prices, mortgage costs rising, growing unemployment, drops in sterling, and the rest – you have to take notice. “I have no doubt the housing and mortgage market in Liverpool, like the rest of the UK, would eventually recover should the UK vote for Brexit but it’s my view that the short and medium term uncertainty it will deliver could have a noticeable negative impact. “Like many, I believe this decision could change our sector for many years to come and for that reason I’d choose the status quo of ‘remain’. This would give us the certainty that we have the freedom to grow and develop our businesses and market without wondering how the UK’s new and highly-changed position in Europe and the world might affect us all.”

''If Britain leaves the EU it could have a huge impact on the housing market and construction industry. “We would expect the population to decrease over years due to changes in immigration, which could lead to less demand in housing resulting in reduced rental values and property prices in the short term. “However, lack of investment from overseas could pose danger for developers therefore impacting on the construction industry as a whole. “If the construction industry slows down due to a lack of funds, in years to come we could see a shortage of skilled tradesmen and new housing stock which could then cause house prices to soar. “It's difficult to predict every outcome at this stage as the impact of Brexit on the property market would depend upon its impact on the economy as a whole. “However there is no doubt that it will cause an air of uncertainty for investors, builders and buyers trying to operate within the industry.''

NEWS MARSHALL PROPERTY TO GO EXTRA MILE FOR CHARITY Staff at Liverpool’s Marshall Property are limbering up to run a 10K in an effort to raise money for local homelessness charity The Whitechapel Centre. Negotiators Alice Wilson and Jenny Friar, both based at the agent’s Penny Lane branch, will undertake the Tunnel 10K on 19 June. As the name suggests, the gruelling course takes competitors under the River Mersey through the Wallasey Tunnel before finishing at Marine Point in New Brighton. All money raised will be donated to The Whitechapel Centre to support its work in helping more people out of homelessness and back into the community. Alice says: “We’re really excited to be raising money for such a worthwhile charity, the difference they’re making in this city is incredible and we hope to continue fundraising for them in the future. “We’re following the mantra of ‘mind over matter’ to get us across the finish line so fingers crossed!” For more information about Alice and Jenny’s charity challenge visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/marshallets.

SUCCESS FOR SECOND CENTURY BRANCH Century 21 in Liverpool has hailed its second branch a success following its first six months of being open. The estate and lettings agency, led by franchise owners Dan Pennington and Ian Ambrose, expanded its presence in the area towards the end of 2015 after its South Liverpool office had been established in Woolton for two years. According to Ian the North Liverpool base on Liverpool Road in Crosby Village, with Natasha Atkinson as the team’s main valuer, has been “well received” across the area so far prompting further optimism for the future. He adds: “We have just passed our first six months and we’ve been blown away by the success. “The market is really picking up and properties in the north of the city are in high demand. “We are looking forward to more success as we grow and establish ourselves more in the Crosby area.” The Century 21 North Liverpool branch has been open for just over six months

NEWS Government funding boosts local masonry specialist Tony Ferry & Sons’ new Long Lane showroom should be open by the end of July

A Liverpool masonry company has undergone a period of expansion after it received a boost through the government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF). The grant has allowed Tony Ferry & Sons, which specalises in granite, marble and stone masonry work, to take on two new skilled fitters and attract bigger contracts. The company, which was formed in 1969, has also been able to move from its original base in Bootle to a facility at Liver Industrial Estate on Long Lane where it’s in the process of creating a new showroom. Mike Ferry, director at Tony Ferry & Sons, says: “The help we have received through the RGF has allowed us to take on bigger contracts and also two new skilled members of staff. “We were planning to move from our Bootle base anyway but the growth fund really helped us with this and we’re now in a much better unit here on Long Lane. “The new showroom is coming along nicely and is around 60% completed – we hope to have it finished within the next two months.” The RGF is a £3.2 billion fund which awards grants to small and medium sized businesses with the aim of supporting private sector investment, creating economic growth and sustainable employment across the country. Tony Ferry & Sons covers all aspects of natural stonework with each of its fitters being fully qualified stonemasons. This allows the firm to take on a broad range of stonework jobs from kitchen worksurfaces right up to commercial and retail projects.

PROPERTY DEMAND SPARKS FIRST QUARTER GROWTH FOR AGENT Sales and lettings figures have risen in 2016’s first quarter for Sutton Kersh, as the agent suggests demand for property and its acquisition by Countrywide have strengthened its performance. The Liverpool agent’s sales are said to have seen a 15% increase compared to the same period last year, and its lettings department has also achieved an 8.5% rise. Leah O’Neil, branch manager at the agency’s West Derby office, highlights that Countrywide’s ownership of the firm has allowed it to become “even stronger in the marketplace” having extended the services and support it can offer. Sutton Kersh also saw a spike in auctions activity during the first quarter, which brought a reported record level of sales activity in March for the wider Countrywide brand too. 36 Your Move

The growth, which Sutton Kersh says hasn’t been affected by April’s increase in Stamp Duty charges, has now prompted the company to continue expanding its team. With new employees having already been appointed to the sales and lettings departments, Sutton Kersh is currently recruiting a new team member for its auctions arm. Commenting on the current health of the property market in Liverpool, James Kersh of Sutton Kersh adds: “There is clearly increased investment within the city which in turn has raised the level of demand for property. This is great news for anyone looking to sell, as now really is an ideal time. “We have achieved some great sale prices through both sales and auctions due to the increase in demand, so we are keen to obtain further instructions.”

James Kersh says rising demand for property is boosting figures

NEWS

LAW FIRM WARNS COHABITING COUPLES OVER LEGAL RIGHTS Cohabiting couples in Liverpool are being advised to seek legal guidance in order to safeguard their property investment.

Jennifer McMahon, head of private client at Paul Crowley & Co

According to the city’s Paul Crowley & Co solicitors, it’s a common misconception amongst couples who live together that they will benefit from legal protection under a ‘common law’ marriage if their home is purchased under one partner’s name. Couples are being advised to make sure they are both named on the title deeds by registering as joint tenants or tenants in common, to guarantee the legal position of both individuals in the event of the relationship ending or death. Jennifer McMahon, head of private client at the firm, says: “Many cohabiting couples aren’t aware of the legal implications of their home ownership and should give careful consideration to the options available to ensure their protection in the future. “We advise our clients to take a holistic approach when reviewing their affairs, as to deal with one concern at a time may not be the most effective route. “When it comes to deciding on how you want to be named on the title deeds there are three major concerns which need to be considered: how would the proceeds be divided should the relationship break down, what would happen to the property in the event of your death and could a consequent claim be made against any proceeds from the sale of your share in the property? “Of course, everyone’s circumstances are different which is why it’s so important to seek legal advice on the matter and understand your legal rights before committing to the purchase of a property.”

Deadline approaching for NWPAs entries The region’s property experts are being urged to enter this year’s NWPAs as the closing date approaches. The 1 July deadline for firms and their projects to be put forward for one of 12 prestigious awards is now less than six weeks away. Entries for a range of categories, which will celebrate a year of residential and commercial property success across the whole of the North West, will be considered by judges with a range of geographical expertise and specialisms. This year’s panel includes Elaine Cunningham, owner of Elaine Cunningham Design Studio; Eric Wright, partner at commercial property agent Hitchcock Wright & Partners; Alastair Shepherd, director of architects Falconer Chester Hall; Lesley MartinWright, CEO of Knowsley Chamber of Commerce; James Glendenning, chief executive of the Greater Merseyside Learning Providers’ Federation and Fiona Woodward-Kelly, owner of Woodward Kelly & Co Ltd. Winners will be announced at a glittering

awards ceremony at Lutyens Crypt in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on 20 October, which is already shaping up to be the biggest yet having attracted sell-out success for tickets and backing from property firms throughout the region. Kim O’Brien, director of Move Publishing which is behind the NWPAs, says: “The NWPAs recognise both the businesses and the people whose vision and commitment continue to drive the region’s property sector. “With the awards now encompassing the whole of the North West, now is a great time to submit an entry and be recognised as one of the leading players in the region’s property sector.”

Awards will be presented for 12 categories

Forth Homes is this year’s headline sponsor, with firms including MSB Solicitors, Redrow Homes Lancashire and North West, UK Business Supplies, Bridging Finance, Countryside, Paul Crowley & Co, The Foundry Agency, PCS Law and Yu Property Group putting their names to categories. NEWS EXPERTS ANNOUNCED FOR 2016 LANDLORD & PROPERTY SHOW

Landlord Action founder Paul Shamplina will lead a seminar at the event

STRONG DEMAND REPORTED AT FORTH HOMES’ DEVELOPMENTS Merseyside-based property developer Forth Homes has reported strong demand across its housing portfolio with just one plot remaining at four of its schemes. The house builder also confirmed it has recently secured two large sites in the North West as it looks to strengthen its already significant presence in the region. A spokesperson for the firm says: “We are always actively seeking new land opportunities for residential development and would consider acquisitions with or without planning permission.” Forth Homes’ developments in the region which have just one plot remaining include sites in Aintree, Waterloo, Blundellsands and

Leading industry experts have been announced for this year’s Landlord & Property Show as the 2016 event takes shape. Landlord Action founder Paul Shamplina will be heading to the 22 October show at Exhibition Centre Liverpool, bringing his seminar ‘How to Avoid a Bad Tenant and What to Do When You Get One’. Paul, who has 25 years of experience in the legal field helping landlords with bad tenants and has appeared regularly on TV, radio and in the press, will feature in a packed line-up of experts in this year’s seminar schedule. The free to attend exhibition, which is Merseyside’s only specialist landlord show, will provide essential information to both new and experienced landlords and will also bring a range of exhibitors together under one roof to cover all aspects of the industry. Liverpool law firm Paul Crowley & Co is also returning as the event’s main sponsor in 2016. Tracy Thompson, managing partner at Paul Crowley & Co, says: “We are delighted to be returning as title sponsors of the Merseyside Landlord & Property Show. “The buy-to-let property market is incredibly fast paced and so it’s important for landlords and industry businesses alike to come together to share ideas and keep up to date on the market. “This is an exciting time of growth for our firm as we have recently expanded our property services across our three branches, and so we are looking forward to connecting with yet more landlords across Merseyside. “Each year we see the most relevant and high quality exhibitors return for informative discussion with Merseyside landlords and are eager to see what this year holds in the new venue.” For more information on opportunities at this year’s event, contact Catherine on 0151 709 3871.

Hall Road East in Blundellsands is one development proving popular with buyers

Little Sutton. The last plot available at Forth’s Melling Road scheme in Aintree is a fourbedroom semi-detached and demand for the development is reported to have been “huge”, with the majority of plots being sold off-plan. At Hall Road East in Blundellsands, an exclusive development of fourbedroom detached executive homes, two out of three plots have been reserved off-plan. Elsewhere at Glenwyllin Road in Waterloo, one large four-bedroom semidetached is still available and the site is said to have attracted “strong interest” amongst families due to its surrounding schools and transport links. Finally, Little Sutton’s Smithy Lane site has just seen its remaining threebedroom townhouse plot be released to the market. Your Move 39

PROPERTY PERSPECTIVES VIEWS AND EXPERTISE FROM INDUSTRY INSIDERS

News story that caught my eye TOM ALMOND IT administrator, UK Business Supplies I was surprised to see that JD Wetherspoon will be entering the takeaway coffee market with an offering of 99p Lavazza Coffee and Tetley Tea. Whilst it’s an incredibly low price point, I can’t imagine many will see the appeal of queuing for their coffee in a boozer behind 10 people ordering food and alcohol, when they could frequent one of the thousands of coffee shops with a real commitment to variety and quality. Good luck to them, they’ll be facing fierce competition from a lot of our fantastic customers!

FREE REPLACEMENT BOILER GRANTS Under the Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO), energy companies provide insulation and heating improvements to qualifying low-income and vulnerable households in private rented or owner occupied properties. Causes of fuel poverty Five factors converge to cause fuel poverty: • Low income households are often linked to absolute poverty • High fuel prices e.g. electricity in the UK is aggravated by higher tariffs for low-volume energy users • Poor energy efficiency in the home, e.g. through old or inefficient heating systems or low levels of insulation • Under-occupancy. According to government statistics, on average those in the most extreme fuel poverty live in larger than average homes • Old age

INTERVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS You secured your place at Rio 2016 after winning a box-off at the European Olympic qualifying event in Turkey this April. How does it feel to have booked a spot on the plane? A few years ago I thought I would be guaranteed to be there, but last year I had a few problems and some injuries and I started to have a few doubts about whether I was going to make it. I had three qualifiers this year and I qualified in the first one so that was a great weight off my shoulders and I’m made up to be there. As the most experienced member of the team and one of Team GB’s most fancied gold medal hopes, do you feel an extra pressure to go out there and succeed? No, to be honest I felt a lot of pressure just to get there, I thought if I don't get there then it would be a complete flop and it would be four years wasted. But now that I’m there I feel as though there is a lot less pressure on me. Obviously I do want the gold medal, more than anything else in the world, but at the end of the day I do believe I’m going to have a great

professional career after the Olympics. My life isn’t all about the Olympics, the Olympics is just three rounds and if I’m going to go professional I’ve got 12 rounds where I think my dedication, my fitness and my strength will come through a lot more. I don't need to be an Olympic champion to become a world champion, although it would make things a lot easier for me! Whatever happens I’m prepared to do it the hard way and I believe I’ll get to the top either way. This year’s Olympics will be the first where head guards will not be used and also has the possibility of being the first games in which professionals will be able to compete; do you think these factors could have an impact on your chances of victory? Well there have been no head guards worn in amateur competition since 2013 and all my success has come since they stopped being used. I’m a powerful puncher and I hurt my opponents a lot more without the guards. If they do allow professionals to fight at the games I will welcome it as just another challenge, whoever wants to be there I will box them. Over three rounds I don't think it’s much of an advantage for them, obviously they’re used to fighting over 12 rounds and they’ve adapted to that. It’s like a long distance runner and a sprinter. I used to spar with Carl Froch (former super-

middleweight world champion) and if we went past six rounds, into the seventh, eighth, ninth and onwards, he would start getting too strong for me but over the first six rounds I would be on fire. Is there a reason why you have held off turning professional considering how many boxers at this stage of their career have usually done so? I was going to turn professional after I won the ABA Championships in 2010 aged 19, then Robert McCracken (Anthony’s trainer) phoned and offered me a spot on the GB squad. I thought why not? I went down to Sheffield and enjoyed the set-up so I tried to make the London 2012 summer Olympics team. I was doing well; winning nearly all my fights, 12 out of 13 in fact – I only lost to the reigning world champion. Ahead of one of the qualifying tournaments I broke my nose and didn't get to go - Fred Evans did and he won a gold medal. Winning that medal qualified him for London, which meant I couldn't go. I had to sit and watch as he won a silver medal. I believed I was a better fighter than him so it was a hard thing to do. At that point I could have turned professional with no credentials or medals but I thought I would try and go for the next Olympics instead. In 2013 I won bronze at the World Championships, then a Commonwealth gold

TALENT

the year after so then it was only two years until Rio. I thought rather than turn professional I could follow that Olympic dream and go for gold there – I’m still on track now and hopefully it pays off for me! Do you take heart from the success of fellow Liverpool boxers such as the Smith brothers who have all won British ABA titles? I’ve obviously got a lot of respect for them, they’ve done great for the city and they are all dedicated fighters. They put the effort in; they’re not just naturally talented. They’re all local lads just like me and as I always say to people, we’re no different to everyone else, we just dedicate our lives to boxing. It’s not like we’ve just been given this natural ability, we have to work day in and day out for this. You started working with sports psychologist Brian McCready several years ago. What impact has this had on your fortunes in the ring? I’m big on sports psychology - I think a lot of the battle is won in your mind before the fight. For a lot of people the nerves can get the better of them and they don't perform as well as they can because they’ve built it up that much in their head. I visualise my victory and go through my routine with Brian – this allows me to save lot of energy so when I fight I feel strong all the way through.

“I thought rather than turn professional I could follow that Olympic dream and go for gold.”

VICTORY CELEBRATIONS

ON THE RUN

You won’t miss a single kick, forehand smash or moment of track and field action at Bierkeller. Nestled in the heart of Liverpool ONE, the Bavarian-themed bar is a sports fan’s paradise, screening live football, cricket, rugby, boxing, athletics and more on an array of screens including one of cinematic proportions - in the upstairs Shooters Sports Bar. Its vast beer hall serves authentic German beers in steins the size of your head and there’s always a raucous atmosphere throughout the venue on matchday, creating the kind of ambience that’s second only to being inside the stadium. Like most popular bars during major sporting events, Bierkeller tends to get packed out, but it’s possible to book a table and secure the next best thing to a ringside seat.

If England manage to top their group at the Euros or Team GB comes away with a record medal haul, the traditional way to celebrate would be to crack open a bottle of bubbly. You’ll find a wide selection of those on offer at Abajo, Liverpool’s first bar specialising in Cava. Located beneath Roja Pinchos on Berry Street, this Catalan-themed nightspot is the ideal place to celebrate a victory in style. It even serves up a range of tasty Spanish bites so you can replenish the energy you spent cheering on your favourite athletes. A word of warning: dousing yourself in bubbly like a Formula 1 driver after a podium finish won’t go down particularly well in a classy place like this, especially if you’re celebrating an England victory over Spain in the knockout phase of the Euros.

There are few things more motivating than a great sporting performance. From memorable underdog victories to world-class displays, athletic feats are nothing short of inspiring. If watching your favourite sporting hero secure silverware inspires you to get active this summer, why not take up running? Whether you hold aspirations to become the next Usain Bolt or simply want to improve your general fitness, Liverpool’s dockside is the route to success. Beginning behind the city’s famous Albert Dock, you’ll race your way across the cobbles into the marina before arriving at Otterspool Promenade, enjoying riverside scenery along the way. This route is ideal for runners of all abilities, who will cover between three and four miles each way. And if you’re not one for flying solo, the Dockside Runners club meets outside of the Nike Store in Liverpool ONE on Tuesdays and Sundays to tackle this route.

“there’s always a raucous atmosphere throughout the venue on matchday, creating the kind of ambience that’s second only to being inside the stadium.”

KNOW YOUR HISTORY If the home nations’ performances at this summer’s top tournaments fail to bowl you over, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found in the annals of Liverpool’s rich sporting history. The Museum of Liverpool is the place to go to immerse yourself in the city’s footballing, boxing, and horse racing heritage. Highlights include displays dedicated to the great rivalry between Merseyside’s red and blue footballing strongholds, the world-renowned Grand National, Liverpool’s boxing history and more. These exhibits, which span everything from Everton and Liverpool trinkets to Grand National memorabilia, can be found on the second floor of the waterside venue in its Wondrous Place gallery.

REFUEL THE UNIQUE WAY

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

GET YOUR FREESTYLE ON

Sporting success and fitness feats are about more than just physical exertion. You won’t get very far without the right fuel in your engine. Whether you’re striving to lead a healthier lifestyle or about to start training for that upcoming marathon, the fitness food and range of cold-pressed juices and shakes on offer at Unique Juices and Nutrition will help you achieve your goals. Situated on Eaton Road in West Derby, the healthy eatery was opened by nutritionist, bodybuilder and fitness model Sarah Griffiths last year. Unique’s menu includes vegan and vegetarian dishes, balanced breakfasts, superfood salads, protein shakes and even healthy cakes - yes, such a thing actually exists all of which can be enjoyed on site or as a takeaway. Outfitted with a stylish interior design which sports a white, green and black aesthetic, Unique serves up steamed and grilled dishes prepared using locally-sourced ingredients and its nutrient-rich juices and shakes are available to order online.

Watching live sport on a big screen with pint in hand surrounded by a small army of fellow fans is all well and good, but it doesn’t beat actually being there in person. Fortunately for those who prefer a courtside seat to a barstool, Merseyside is playing host to a range of sporting events this summer, including the 15th edition of the Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament. Live tennis is the perfect summer pursuit and this three-day exhibition at Liverpool Cricket Club will see stars past and present take to the courts. French-Iranian favourite Mansour Bahrami, hailed as one of the greatest entertainers in tennis history, will top the Legends bill alongside fellow veterans such as Barry Cowan and Peter McNamara. Current ATP stars including Wang Quang and giant killer Damir Dzumhur will also take part in the competition, which runs between 16 and 19 June.

Budgetary constraints are no excuse for sitting on the sidelines during Liverpool’s summer of sport as there are plenty of ways to get involved without spending a penny. Located just two miles from the city centre, Princes Park is good for more than just a casual kickabout with jumpers as goalposts. This Grade II-listed greenspace is one of several Liverpool parks to install outdoor gymnasium equipment for all of your exercising needs. No gym membership? No problem. If cardio is more your thing, Princess Park hosts a weekly, free, timed 5km running event organised by parkrun UK, which attracts more than 100 runners from the local community. There’s also tennis courts so you can work on your backhand and claim bragging rights over your friends.

& Best for...

FRENCH FOOD With just two weeks to go until Euro 2016 kicks off in France, travelling supporters will be looking forward to sampling plenty of the local cuisine alongside the footballing feast. If you’re not lucky enough to be heading across the Channel yourself, you can enjoy the next best thing here on Merseyside with our pick of the top three spots for fantastic French fare.

WINE AND DINE Caveau, Woolton Village Named after the French word given to a small cellar used to house fine wine, this intimate venue prides itself on using only the freshest ingredients to produce contemporary cuisine which has been uniquely designed by chef Dave Roberts.

PROPER PANCAKES La Crepe Rit, Albert Dock

Located on Albert Dock, ‘The Laughing Pancake’ offers visitors an authentic taste of classic French crepes alongside an extensive selection of ‘galettes’ – large buckwheat flour pancakes native to Brittany filled with a range of tasty ingredients including egg, meat, cheese, fish and vegetables.

STAR ATTRACTION Fraiche, Oxton No list of Merseyside’s best French restaurants would be complete without this exclusive Oxton eatery which has proudly held a prestigious Michelin star for the past eight years. Chef patron Marc Wilkinson caters for just 12 diners at a time and with such an exalted reputation, reservations are at a premium.

WALL OF FAME

Victoria Street, L2

With its neon signage, array of Beatles memorabilia and American-inspired décor, the best of Liverpool and New York collide the moment you step over Wall of Fame’s threshold. A combination of low lighting and soft rock added to the atmosphere as our waiter led us to our table, which sat beneath the gaze of John, Paul, George and Ringo; the subjects of a vast mural dominating one of the restaurant’s walls. Inspired by our surroundings, my date and I decided to get into the rock ‘n’ roll spirit and start our evening with cocktails. I ordered a Mojito and my partner chose a Chambord Sour (both £7). Mine was every inch traditional, served with the right balance of mint leaves and limes, and enough ice to sink the Titanic. It was a cool, refreshing blast of Cuban delight that went down a little too easily, not unlike my date’s syrupysweet concoction of raspberries, lemon and alcohol. Next up was our starter - a huge plate of sharing nachos loaded with salsa, melted cheese, jalapenos, and a

REVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW generous amount of chicken (£8), chosen upon the suggestion of our waiter, who informed us that this dish is being trialled as a special. The nachos were as close to perfect as a plate of crisps can be; a crunchy base for the tangy salsa, succulent chicken, and stringy cheese. My date remarked that they were the best nachos she’s ever tasted, and I wouldn’t disagree. Onto the mains, and I risked a poultry overdose by selecting the WOF Chicken Burger (£10) while my date went for the Mac Daddy (£12) - a tower of terror combining 6oz of steak patty with pastrami, mac ‘n’ cheese and more. At first glance, I could only describe my burger as the entire contents of a KFC Bargain Bucket between two pieces of bread, but the Kentucky comparisons ended at first bite. This was a far cry from the grease fest associated with The Colonel. We’re talking prime cuts of chicken that melt in your mouth with added crunch

and kick thanks to a union of breadcrumbs and hot sauce. My side of sweet potato fries was cooked to perfection, crispy and soft in the right places. My date asked our server to hold the mac ‘n’ cheese on her burger, which turned out to be a sensible choice given the size of this hefty beef injection. It was as indulgent as it looked and delivered an authentic slice of New York’s finest gastronomy. We rounded off our evening with a dessert of Deep Fried Oreos (£4.50). Despite sounding like something that might put you in hospital, this plate of sugar-coated, biscuity goodness turned out to be a surprise highlight. My date and I felt like our stomachs had taken a pounding by the end of the evening but Wall of Fame’s winning combination of tantalising flavours and stylish interiors had us hooked, and inspired us to plan a return visit for another evening of blissful gluttony.
