CONTENTS

EDITOR’S LETTER The arrival of a new month brings a new milestone for Liverpool to mark, as the city prepares to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the May Blitz. We look back at the notorious week in Liverpool’s history and find out how it has, in part, shaped the city we see today. Plus we find out more about Liverpool’s plans to remember the World War II event. In our Hot Topic for this issue, we also explore the city’s changing historic former church buildings, and why the characterfilled sites are proving to be a popular option for residential developers. And international bestselling author Harlan Coben chats to Your Move about his time in Liverpool while his Sky series ‘The Five’ was filmed in the city.

- CEO, Andrew Louis

Your independent locally owned sales and lettings expert

Why Liverpool is one of the UK’s top buy-to-let hotspots

The past decade has seen Liverpool transform into a vibrant city with multi-million pound projects, exciting employment opportunities, increased tourism, a growing population of nearly half a million and is now ranked as one of the UK’s top hotspots for buyto-let property investments. Liverpool is home to four universities with over 60,000 students and a rapidly expanding pool of young professionals moving into the city who are in need of high-quality housing in the right locations. According to Rightmove, property values in our city are rising approximately 5% year on year and in 2015 exceeded the levels seen in 2007 before the banking crisis. Rental yields on buy-to-let property offer NET returns of circa 5% and there are no indications that this will fall in the future. Looking ahead there are plenty of new development schemes planned for the city including housing schemes and a major regeneration of the Liverpool docks. We work closely with a variety of leading developers that offer an average of 7% NET returns assured for upto 3 years. Louis Anastasiou, CEO of Andrew Louis says: “The Liverpool property investment market is thriving at the moment and the city centre is definitely bringing more savvy investors into our area. Over the last 18 months we’ve witnessed many developers start to react to the demand and build new apartments, which should help to satisfy the demand in the coming years.”

W NE

Finding the best buy-to-let opportunities takes time, effort and local market knowledge. So if you’re looking to create or expand your investment portfolio, let us help. With our buy-to let service you can utilise our 27+ years of lettings experience to find you the right property that will suit your investment options. We will do all the hard work – so you can sit back and watch your portfolio flourish, receiving maximum yields, without the maximum effort.

According to the Diocese of Liverpool, around five of the city’s Church of England churches alone have been decommissioned in the past five or six years. It’s a decision which is by no means taken lightly, however the costly responsibilities that come with maintaining historic and listed buildings can often leave little choice. “We’ve probably got the largest portfolio of heritage buildings in the area,” explains Stuart Haynes, director of communications for the Diocese of Liverpool. “Each church is kind of a separate organisation so there are church councils that are registered as charity trustees. “We don’t receive any regular central funding for the upkeep – we rely on the generosity of congregations and also any grant funding that individuals can secure so it’s quite a challenge, particularly for small congregations, and sometimes we’ve got to make difficult decisions around church buildings.” An unstable spire threatening to collapse into the roof of St John the Divine Church in Fairfield is just one example of the issues which have marred some church buildings in the city, and such problems inevitably require “substantial investment” to be repaired. Therefore, as Stuart adds, it’s not always possible or in the best interests of the building for the church community to hold onto it. “One of the challenges is do you try and keep a church as a building which is maybe not suitable for modern church worship and takes all of our energy, or do you let somebody else develop that building and keep and preserve the beauty of the architecture, but use it for a different purpose?” he says. “Provided that’s done sensitively and well, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The worst thing would be having a building rotting and decaying.”

KEEPING CHURCHES IN THE COMMUNITY So how do some church buildings come to end up as homes? Well, for the Church of England in particular it would seem that when a congregation unfortunately does have to let go of its historic church building, selling it off to a residential property developer is far from the next step. “We don’t just look at offloading them straight away,” insists Stuart, highlighting that finding a suitable use for a building comes before making a financial return. For the Diocese of Liverpool, keeping the sites as part of worshipping communities, even if that means for another denomination, is the preferable way forward. For instance, the diocese is currently said to be looking to transfer the ownership of St Paul’s Church in Stoneycroft to the Coptic Church, while some churches begin talking to other congregations and denominations themselves at earlier stages about how their site could be kept as a place of worship. Another option is for a former church building to be taken on by the wider community, as has been the case for the Grade II*-listed Old Christ Church in Waterloo, which has been brought back in to active use by a ‘friends’ group to host community activities. Meanwhile the Archdiocese of Liverpool has also seen a number of its former church buildings being transformed into alternative community spaces such as St Mary of the Angels Church, which was opened as Liverpool Philharmonic at the Friary in 2009 following a two-year refurbishment project to turn it into a recording and rehearsal venue.

HOT TOPIC

“CHURCHES WILL ALWAYS HOLD VALUE AND INCREASE IN CAPITAL GIVEN THE GREAT ORIGINAL FEATURES AND UNIQUE BUILD AGAINST THE CONFORMIST NEW BUILD APARTMENTS AND HOUSES.”

HOUSES OF PRAYER TO PLUSH PADS In the event that former church buildings are brought to the market, their potential for residential development has proven to be a catch for developers in the area. Liverpool agent and auctioneer Sutton Kersh has dealt with a number of decommissioned churches during various stages of their transition from place of worship to residential offering, having targeted investors and developers with buildings at auction which require redevelopment, to marketing fully converted homes to prospective buyers and tenants. At its most recent auction, the two-storey brick and stone Tetlow Church near Liverpool’s Stanley Park generated a sale for £12,500 more than its £50,000 guide price as its prospects for residential conversion were highlighted. Meanwhile the former Stoneycroft Church on Greenfield Road in Old Swan, which was previously auctioned by Sutton Kersh, has been successfully turned into 14 apartments. Cathy Holt, associate director at Sutton Kersh Auctions, suggests that churches’ wealth of character, original architecture and features make them popular spaces to live in and also viable investments. “The size of rooms and the original features make them attractive to owner occupiers,” says Cathy.

“Investors achieve very good yields given the size and amount of conceivable units you can fit within the buildings. “Churches will always hold value and increase in capital given the great original features and unique build against the conformist new build apartments and houses.” Another church seemingly on the cusp of being sold is St Austin’s Church & Presbytery on Aigburth Road which, again highlighted for its residential potential, is said to have attracted “significant demand”. The Grade II-listed church and its rear presbytery, which were both built in 1856, were recently being marketed by Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH). “Given its architectural merit, demonstrated by its Grade II listing and age, and combined with the established residential location, the marketing campaign which has now been brought to a conclusion has demonstrated significant demand in particular from residential developers,” says Robert Diggle, director of agency and investment at LSH. “There are a lack of opportunities for new build residential accommodation in South Liverpool and therefore the developers take every opportunity to convert buildings when they become available, with the knowledge that there is strong occupier demand upon completion of construction.” Further details of whether a specific buyer has been found for the site and any future plans

could not be confirmed at this stage, although a deadline for bids has now passed. For property investors and developers looking to transform former churches into homes, there’s more to think about than the church building itself. A ‘New Uses for Former Places of Worship’ report by Historic England also highlights the importance of protecting surrounding churchyards. “A new owner will have to take account of the need to obtain permission for any disturbance of burials, of the archaeological significance of below-ground and some upstanding churchyard structures, and of the possible wildlife and ecological significance of the churchyard,” it explains, suggesting that sufficient justification to clear historic graveyards and monuments in church grounds is “rare”. According to the Diocese of Liverpool, sympathetic residential conversions which have taken place in the city so far have not been seen as a loss as such, but have been welcomed as they address other needs in the city. “In an ideal world we’d have all the buildings used as worshipping communities,” says Stuart. “Failing that then the best, most suitable use for the community is fine by us. “If it’s providing beneficial housing to people then that’s still a need for people so that’s a good and sympathetic use and the congregation can do the church stuff elsewhere - that’s not a problem.” Your Move 37

With just two months to go until the deadline for the prestigious awards, which have been rebranded and opened up to the whole of the North West for 2016, the region’s agencies are being encouraged to make sure they’re in with a chance of winning the top title. For the first time in the awards’ history, entries must be submitted for the Residential Property

Residential Property Agency of the Year is one of 12 awards to be presented

Agency of the Year category, which is one of 12 awards set to celebrate residential and commercial property achievements throughout the area. Previously, agencies were automatically submitted and shortlisted for the accolade via a mystery shopping process. Kim O’Brien, director of Move Publishing which is behind the NWPAs, says: “With the awards now encompassing the whole of the North West, now is the perfect time to submit an entry and be recognised as the best residential sales or lettings agency in the region. “The judges will be looking for agencies with a

strong client focus, high levels of service and evidence of growth and success through digital marketing. If this sounds like you, then get your entry in before 1 July.” Awards will be presented during a glittering ceremony at Lutyens Crypt in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on 20 October. With sell-out success for tickets and backing from property firms around the region, the event is already shaping up to be the biggest yet. It’s understood the building’s remaining tenants, including MSB Solicitors and GJW Direct, will be moving elsewhere. Andy Phillips, commercial director at Knight Knox, says: “Liverpool is one of the country’s top buy-to-let investment hotspots and we’re thrilled to be providing the area with premium residential property and attractive investment opportunities.” The building will be let by Fortis Lettings and Management and managed by Fortis Estate Management. Kieran Moore, director of Fortis, adds: “We’re delighted to announce the launch of Silkhouse Court, which offers truly exceptional views of Liverpool city centre. “All 193 apartments will be built with future residents in mind and will benefit from high quality fixtures and fittings as well as contemporary designs, so we’re sure they’ll be snapped up in no time.” Your Move 43

Liverpool interior designer to expand flagship store The expansion will make way for more roomset displays

Liverpool interior design expert Elaine Cunningham is currently refurbishing her flagship store on Aigburth Road. The ground floor of the South Liverpool shop, which features Elaine Cunningham Home Furnishings, was recently revamped and the first floor is being extended, with an estimated completion date of June. The Elaine Cunningham Design Studio will be based on the upper level, with the expansion of the space allowing the business to showcase more of its roomsets, displaying highlights from its latest ranges on site. With the transformation underway Elaine says: “I felt that now is the ideal time for expansion because the recession is well and truly over, the housing market is booming and more and more people are refurbishing their homes, adding value to them. “I think our customers want to step into a store and see an actual roomset to get a feel for how it will look in their own home.” The company is also growing its workforce to coincide with the refurbishment and is seeking a part-time trainee interior stylist to join the team. Further hires are expected to follow. Improvements to the outside of the Aigburth premises include a new sign bearing the ‘Elaine Cunningham’ branding and the company is also in the process of upgrading its website. Launched as Elaine Cunningham Interiors in 2006, the store sells everything from wallpaper to fabric, paint to carpet and furniture to lighting, as well as offering an interior design and made-to-measure curtain service. Home consultations are also provided. For more information visit www.elainecunningham.co.uk.

NEWS Philip Lawton says Liverpool rental market is attracting strong demand

LIVERPOOL RENTAL MARKET IS ‘VERY HEALTHY’ SAYS PROPERTY EXPERT Liverpool’s rental market is currently in good shape with the south of the city seeing particular demand, according to a local property expert. Sutton Kersh director, Philip Lawton says the lettings sector is “very healthy”, noting high demand for three-bedroom semi-detached and terraced houses in South Liverpool priced between £650 and £900 per month. He says: “A well maintained, unfurnished house [in South Liverpool], will let within the first week or two of coming to the market, sometimes within 48 hours.” The property firm also suggests high demand for two-bedroom apartments in the vicinity of Sefton Park priced between £650 and £800 per month. Meanwhile at the higher end of the market, four-bedroomed detached houses letting for between £1,400 and £1,750 per month are said to be sought after. Philip adds: “Whilst there is a healthy demand for rental accommodation, properties still need to be well maintained and well presented as tenants’ expectations are also rising. “There has been modest growth in rental values within the past 12 months and I expect this to continue in the foreseeable future.” According to Philip, the controversial landlord licensing requirements which came into effect last April have not had a significant impact on the Liverpool rental market. He also predicts the recently introduced stamp duty increase will prove similarly inconsequential once investors have built the additional expense into their purchase costs. For more information contact Sutton Kersh on 0151 482 2553.

Countryside reports spring sales rise in Rainhill Housing sales around the Rainhill area have seen a sharp increase this spring, according to homebuilder Countryside.

Countryside’s Stephenson Grove development has been attracting buyers

The developer has announced that 20% of all sales at its Stephenson Grove development on Warrington Road took place within the last two months. Countryside has now sold 67 out of 79 houses at the site, with local buyers snapping up 13 of them since February. The surge in demand follows a redesign of the Stephenson Grove development based on customer feedback, which included the addition of more four-bedroom home designs. Peter Vella, regional sales and marketing director at Countryside, says: “We’ve seen a real increase in enquiries in the past couple of months at Stephenson Grove, particularly on the larger home designs that came as part of the site’s redesign last summer. “This, combined with the Help to Buy scheme, has gone a long way in helping local people not only step onto the property ladder, but also provide security for their families.” For more information on Countryside’s Stephenson Grove development, which has a sales office based on Warrington Road, call 0151 909 8089. TALENT

INTERVIEW BY MARK LANGSHAW

TO WHAT EXTENT IS ‘THE FIVE’ A DEPARTURE FROM WHAT YOU USUALLY DO? The story was actually a novel to begin with. I was going to make ‘The Five’ as a book, but with four lead characters I saw it in a bigger way; with brighter colours, more texture, more pop, and more visuals than most of my stories. After 28 novels I wanted to tell a story on a different canvas and I thought a 10-episode series was the most interesting way to tell this one. The story itself is not different from my books. It’s really about four friends and what happens when a past tragedy comes back into their lives. WHAT ARE THE KEY THEMES THAT ‘THE FIVE’ EXPLORES AS THE STORY UNFOLDS? It’s about hope, redemption, and family with really cool twists and turns. In the very opening scene, we see these five kids playing in the woods, and the older brother is saying to his younger brother ‘just go home, you know the way. Get out of here, you’ll be fine.’ You see the brother walk away, never to be seen again, and boom! We skip ahead 20 years and these four other children have all grown up. One’s become a doctor, one’s become a lawyer helping the poor, one’s become a cop, and one is a social worker running a shelter for runaway youths. Their lives are scarred by that disappearance 20 years ago and right before the first commercial break we find out that DNA has been discovered that shows the missing kid they thought was dead all these years is still alive. Wow, right? That’s how it all starts, before the four friends reunite to try and find out the truth. AT WHAT STAGE DID YOU REALISE ‘THE FIVE’ WAS A TV SHOW RATHER THAN A NOVEL? I was toying around with the idea of doing either one. I think we’re living in the golden age of television. I don’t think it’s ever been done quite this well, with such variety in so many different countries and locations. So when Nicola Shindler of RED Production Company approached me about doing something, this idea was just right there. I thought ‘wouldn’t it be cool if I could make a TV series instead of just adapting a novel?’ This is like a TV novel, if you will - 10 parts, one big story with a beginning, middle and end. I just love that idea, the way it’s told in 10 chapters. YOU MENTIONED HOW THE SHOW STANDS ALONE BUT IS THERE SCOPE FOR A FOLLOW-UP? I could take these characters and put them in another story, but I hate it when a TV series you’ve invested so much time in doesn’t give you the answers you want. They kind of stall for

another season. That’s just not fair. I sell my next book based on how good the book before was and it’s going to be the same with this series. If we bring these people back it’s because you loved the story so much. You will have all of the answers. I want you to have an emotional ending and shed a tear during parts of it. All of that was made clear to Sky One from the start.

Harlan on the set of ‘The Five’ with O.T. Fagbenle

AS A NOVELIST YOU’RE USED TO WORKING SOLO HOW DID YOU FIND CO-WRITING ‘THE FIVE’ WITH DANNY BROCKLEHURST? The comparison I use is that, as a novelist, I take home a school report card that says ‘he does not play well with others’ and TV is all about collaboration. I did go into the project wary but especially with Danny Brocklehurst, it was a perfect partnership. He was the perfect guy to work with. He really got my sensibilities and I got his. We have similar senses of humour, similar outlooks on life, and the same vision for the show. I went in with great trepidation because I don’t normally let my stuff go to other people, but he did a fantastic job and it ended up working out.

parks and beautiful homes, and then we have scenes in broken-down shelters and in darkness. Your city has all of that and more. We did our table readings on the top floor of the Maritime Museum, looking out at the Yellow Submarine. It’s just a cool place where areas are being redone all the time. I don’t think we could have found one place that had such wonderful variety for us.

HOW DID IT FEEL SEEING YOUR CREATION COME TO LIFE ON SCREEN? It sounds really corny but I welled up. I kind of got teary. You can be in this business and write as many novels as you want, but I remember thinking when I was on the set in Liverpool that I had this idea in my house in New Jersey and it went on to bring together this great cast - Tom Cullen, O.T. Fagbenle, Lee Ingleby, Sarah Solemani - the four leads. Then we have great veteran actors and actresses like Geraldine James, Michael Maloney and Don Warrington. To see these people bring your idea to life is really heady, it’s really an emotional moment and I still get choked up when I see it.

WHAT KIND OF FEEDBACK DID YOU HEAR FROM THE CAST AND CREW ABOUT FILMING IN THE CITY? I think we all fell a little bit in love with Liverpool, really. For them it was interesting because they’re mostly from London. They were pulled up from their roots and spent a lot of time in Liverpool for the shoot. I recently was having dinner with O.T. Fagbenle, who plays Danny in the show, and I know he has such a deep love for Liverpool now. He almost considers it another home. I mentioned our four lead actors but I think our fifth lead is the city of Liverpool, it really shines. I think you guys will be really proud of your city. I’m proud of your city and I hope you enjoy what you see in the show.

‘THE FIVE’ WAS FILMED HERE IN LIVERPOOL WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE CITY THAT APPEALED TO THE PRODUCTION TEAM? I think your city is magic. It’s really cool and has such variety. When you walk around it’s beaming with life. You have all these various bricks in so many colours. They look almost like those paintings that change based on the angle you’re at. The city’s streets and brickwork look different depending on the time of day or where you’re standing. It was fun for me as a stranger to walk down your streets because they take on different colours and textures, block to block and time of day. I would often go out of my hotel - I was staying at the Hope Street Hotel - and walk towards Bold Street where they have these cool, funky cafes where I would set up shop. I actually wrote part of my new book ‘Fool Me Once’ in Bold Street Coffee. There are moments in the show set in green

ARE THERE MORE TV PROJECTS FOR YOU ON THE HORIZON? Yes, definitely. I’m going to talk to Sky One about maybe doing another show together and I’m going to continue working with Nicola Shindler of RED Production Company. We’ve formed our own production company called Final Twist Productions and we plan on trying to adapt my novel ‘Six Years’ into a TV series. That will be for an American network.

‘THE FIVE’ AIRS ON SKY ONE EACH FRIDAY AT PM

“I MENTIONED OUR FOUR LEAD ACTORS BUT I THINK OUR FIFTH LEAD IS THE CITY OF LIVERPOOL, IT REALLY SHINES.”

WORDS BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS

THE MAY BLITZ OF SAW THE MOST CONCENTRATED SERIES OF WORLD WAR II AIR ATTACKS ON ANY BRITISH CITY OUTSIDE LONDON TARGET LIVERPOOL FOR SEVEN CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS FEROCIOUS BOMBING RAIDS BY THE GERMAN LUFTWAFFE CAUSED DEVASTATION ACROSS THE CITY RAISING LARGE PARTS OF IT TO THE GROUND AS WE APPROACH THE TH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS NOTORIOUS WEEK IN LIVERPOOL’S HISTORY YOUR MOVE LOOKS BACK AT HOW THE EVENT SHAPED THE CITY AND FINDS OUT WHAT’S IN STORE TO MARK THE OCCASION Bombing raids on the strategically vital port of Liverpool began in August 1940, continuing for the rest of that year. The aerial offensive reached its peak in May 1941, when for a week from 1 May, over 850 tonnes of high explosive bombs and more than 112,000 incendiary devices were dropped on the city. The May Blitz was one of the last series of major raids on Britain before Germany shifted its attention to the invasion of Russia and the last significant air assault on Merseyside during the war. It left a mark which is still visible to this day. “The easiest way of visually explaining the devastation caused by the May Blitz is with the area we now know as Liverpool ONE which was essentially flattened,” says Neil Holmes, expert on the Liverpool Blitz and author of two books on the subject.

“BEHIND THE SWEEPING SLUM CLEARANCES OF THE 60s AND 70s, THE BLITZ WAS PROBABLY THE THING THAT HAD THE NEXT BIGGEST EFFECT ON THE REDEVELOPMENT OF LIVERPOOL.” Numerous prominent buildings were severely damaged or destroyed, including Blacklers department store on Charlotte Street; Lewis’s, which took a direct hit and had to be pulled down and Custom House, which suffered intense bombing throughout the Blitz but took its knockout blow during the May offensive. It wasn't just the docks and the city centre which suffered under the bombardment; residential areas also experienced vast devastation. An astonishing 40% of Liverpool's houses were either destroyed or seriously damaged, leaving 51,000 people homeless. In many districts, large swathes of terraced housing was wiped out, most notably in Bootle, which was left with just 15% of its housing standing as a result of the week-long barrage. Much of the city centre was rapidly rebuilt

following the events of May 1941 and the wider German bombing campaign, but in some cases buildings affected by the Blitz were left untouched for decades. Parts of Albert Dock, for example, were severely damaged during the Blitz yet stood ruined after the war, with the area falling into dereliction before a major regeneration project began in the 1980s. Although a devastating week in Liverpool’s history, the May Blitz eventually proved a watershed moment in the shaping of both the city’s skyline and its development into what it is today. Following the war, Liverpool City Council was faced with the task of replacing houses destroyed during the Blitz. Much like other cities, Liverpool redeveloped central areas of the city in the 1950s and 1960s whilst constructing large amounts of new council houses and flats in the suburbs. “Behind the sweeping slum clearances of the 60s and 70s, the Blitz was probably the thing that had the next biggest effect on the redevelopment of Liverpool,” adds Neil. “I think for someone living then, it would be very difficult to imagine what life and housing in the modern day period would be like. If you told a docker in 1940 that the warehouses he was working in would be housing in 2016, he would think you were mad!” The human cost of the May Blitz should, of course, not be overlooked- 1,453 people lost their lives across Liverpool, with a further 1,065 suffering serious injuries. “This was all in the space of a week,” Neil adds. “It’s hard to imagine anybody who wouldn't have known somebody who had been killed.” One of the most vivid and poignant symbols of the May Blitz and its impact on both the buildings and people of Liverpool is of course St Luke’s Church, known to many as the ‘Bombed Out Church’. It was on the night of 5 May 1941 when the Gothic-styled parish church on Leece Street suffered a direct hit from a German incendiary device, leaving the building a burnt-out shell. Unlike Custom House, which was controversially pulled down after sustaining damage which was not irreparable, St Luke’s was left to stand as a reminder and a memorial to the thousands of Liverpool men, women and children who died during the Blitz.

OUT OF THE DARKNESS

St Luke’s Church, 6-8 May Out of the Darkness will transform St Luke’s with a free moving light and sound display to mark the 75th anniversary of the May Blitz. Innovative artists METRO-BOULOT-DODO (MBD) are the team behind the installation which will feature a 12-minute film retelling the story of the Blitz and how it affected Liverpool. Archival photographs will also be projected onto the church and into the windows alongside a live performance. Taking place over three nights, audiences can visit the garden of St Luke’s to view over 2,000 lanterns which have been created by primary school children from across Merseyside. The lanterns have been made to look like shards of broken stained glass, with some based on the small remaining pieces which are still visible at St Luke’s. “It’s a really emotive and reflective piece – I think people will come away quite touched and shocked by just how much Liverpool was affected,” says Esther Simpson, artistic director of MBD.

MERSEYSIDE BLITZ - AN UNCONQUERED PEOPLE

Liverpool Cathedral, 3 May Liverpool Cathedral will mark the anniversary of the May Blitz on 3 May with a special event staged by BBC Radio Merseyside, written and produced by Pauline McAdam. The occasion will feature music from the 1940s and beyond, taking the audience on a journey of Liverpool’s recovery and regeneration since World War II. A military-style brass band and 170-strong choir will be among the performers on the night alongside Frank Cottrell Boyce and Roger McGough, who will be presenting original pieces.

To mark the 75th anniversary of that night, an online exhibition of more than 30 objects will launch on 3 May, exploring the museum’s relationship with the people of Liverpool. Curatorial Talk: The May Blitz, Museum of Liverpool, 3 May One of the museum’s curators, Sharon Brown, will share her knowledge of the May Blitz and explain the impact the week of bombing had on the city. Memory Walk, Museum of Liverpool, 5 May The Museum of Liverpool presents a journey through the last 100 years and shows how the May Blitz changed the lives of many local people whilst exploring some of the unique stories and objects from the city’s past.

THAI An ever increasing fixture on high streets across the country, Thai cuisine is on the up and here in Liverpool the story is no different. Incorporating aspects of both Chinese and Indian food, Thai is quickly becoming as popular as its more established counterparts. With that in mind it seems like a good time to take stock of the best options the city has to offer.

HIGH-CLASS FARE Chaophraya, Liverpool ONE

Located on the upper level of Liverpool ONE next door to the exclusive Palm Sugar cocktail bar, Chaophraya is a distinctly upmarket Thai eatery. Set over two levels with its own impressive alfresco terrace, Chaophraya is the perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion or to simply enjoy a well-earned break from a strenuous shopping trip.

JEWEL OF THE LANE Chilli Banana, Lark Lane

A mainstay of Lark Lane’s substantial food offering for a number of years now, Chilli Banana has established itself as arguably the Lane's standout eatery. Its food is that popular there is even a Chilli Banana cookbook so intrepid chefs can have a go at recreating some of its finest dishes at home.

THE REAL DEAL Phi, West Derby Village Based in the heart of West Derby Village, Phi is a family-run restaurant with a truly authentic feel. Head chef Sura hails from Chiamge Mai in Northern Thailand – a province famed for its use of fresh herbs and spices in its cooking. Sura must be doing something right as even footballer Wayne Rooney has popped in for a plate of his ‘proper’ Thai grub.

GIVE KITCHEN Harrington Road, Brunswick Dock, L3 Liverpool is hardly lacking when it comes to trendy eateries, with a seemingly endless supply of stylish restaurants opening across the city on a regular basis. However when it comes to vegetarian and in particular, vegan offerings, Liverpool quite surprisingly lags far behind some its North West rivals including Manchester and Leeds. With this in mind it was with much intrigue that my diner date and I headed along to Liverpool’s first vegan restaurant, GIVE Kitchen, to sample the menu. Based in the distinctive surroundings of Brunswick Business Park, GIVE Kitchen was founded last year by Paul Hampson and Dario Curcillo who, through their GIVE2040 Foundation, want to give back to those in need by donating a fresh and nutritious meal to the homeless for every purchase made online, in store or at their restaurant. After being shown to our table upstairs and conversing with our waitress for the evening, we were delighted to learn that the food at GIVE Kitchen is served whenever it’s ready to ensure the best possible flavour from the super fresh ingredients. To start, my dining partner and I shared a small plate of Indonesian sweet soy mock duck and mango salsa with baby gem cups and a sesame seed dressing (£6.95). A complete novice when it

comes to vegan food, I was impressed with both the flavour and texture of the ‘mock duck’, which I later learnt was made from a special wheat protein, and I defy anyone to be able to tell the difference between this vegan substitute and the real thing. The fresh mango was a perfect foil for the tangy Indonesian seasoning on the mock duck - a dish that would surely not look out of place on any authentic oriental restaurant menu. Now for the mains - I was immediately drawn to the Super protein cheese burger with sweet potato fries and onion rings (£9.50) – admittedly as it was the most recongisable item on the menu. Any suspicion I had that vegan food wouldn’t be filling was quickly dispelled when I set eyes on my towering burger. I ashamedly only managed to complete half of it by the time I’d demolished the three onion rings and generous helping of tasty sweet potato fries. Continuing with the oriental theme of our starter, my partner plumped for Pad Thai with smoked tofu, Asian greens and buckwheat noodles (£9.95) for her main. Much like the mock duck, the tofu lent itself well to Asian cuisine and mixed nicely with the fresh

REVIEW BY LAWRENCE SAUNDERS vegetables and succulent noodles. On the recommendation of our waitress we decided to share a dark chocolate and peanut butter brownie with candied lemon zest and citrus curd (£5.95) for dessert. The tangy citrus curd nicely offset the richness of the brownie, proving an inspired suggestion from our server. My dinner date’s large Caffe Latte (£2.60) was an unexpected highlight of the evening. Made with organic oat milk, my partner was blown away with the artistry and effort that had clearly gone into the triple layered beverage which was an excellent bookend for the meal. After three courses and a coffee in most restaurants I would be feeling just about ready to burst by this point. Whether it was the absence of meat, the fresh ingredients or the array of vegetables though, this time I was feeling sprightly enough to make it down the stairs and take a quick glance around GIVE’s wonderful on-site shop on our way out. Driving home, I felt as though we’d only scratched the surface when it comes to vegan food and are already planning to head back to GIVE Kitchen in the near future to uncover more exciting creations.
