Welcome! Welcome to the winter edition of The Juicy Word. In September Isobelle Fagin, Olivia O’Brien, Luke Clansey and Lottie Brighouse-Jones joined the editorial team and they have made a great contribution in their first edition! This term has been extremely busy with many exciting events taking place in school, culminating in not one but two Christmas productions, Shine Star Shine and Snow White. The editorial team have wasted no time in getting to know Bickerstaffe School’s new Class 2 teacher, Miss Wilson and our new teaching assistant, Mrs Aisbitt. Drilling down to the detail Jake Evans, Lauren Speakman and Charlie Sweeney put them through their paces to find out everything they possibly could! A sporty spin for fashion brings you the latest cool looks for girls and boys but we’ve also thought of our cute little furry friends with a fun and festive look for pets. The sad story of the disappearance of our school hens may not have been a highlight of the term, however in memory of Muffin, we bring you a special comic created by Lottie Brighouse-Jones. We wish you all a very happy Christmas and see you in the New Year.

A BATTY SURPRISE
TRAINING TO TEACH

On a Friday in November during last break Eleanor Ashburner found a baby bat on the wet tarmac in the school playground. We were all so surprised to find a baby bat but now think there must have been a bat nest somewhere on the school building. Eleanor ran to Mrs Kelly to tell her about the bat and then they walked across to the bat, followed by a big crowd of other children! At first we thought the bat was dead but suddenly it moved; we gently picked it up and took it over to the hedge. Once we had all moved away the bat flew off and everyone was really happy.
Class 4 have had two special learners in their classroom this term, Mr Allen and Miss Crompton. Placed by Edge Hill University they are both training to become teachers. We have had lots of fun getting to know them and have enjoyed the lessons they have taught our class. Mr Allen even came on one of our cross country runs too!
GOING FOR GOLD By Lottie Brighouse-Jones On Wednesday 14 October Bickerstaffe School attended a Year 5 and Year 6 cross country event in Burscough. We also had some Year 4 children in our team. The athletes had to run around a track twice and the distance was just less than one mile. At sporting events like this schools get categorised into either a large, medium, small or mini sized school. The Year 5 and Year 6 girls teams both came first in the mini school category, but we ran so well we came first in the small school category too! The first two runners of each team were awarded gold medals. One of the sport coaches at the event highlighted what an amazing achievement it was for a mini school to win both categories. We were all really happy to bring back gold to school the next day but also disappointed because we didn’t have a boys team. So boys get running!
A den of reading Children camp out in their special space By Charlie Sweeney and Lauren Speakman Class 3 have a new addition to their classroom, a reading tent. When they have finished their class work they can go and read there and they also have guided reading in the tent too. We spoke to the pupils in Class 3 to find out what they think about this special place. Alishia Salamanca said,”
I really like it because it is comfy to sit in while you read and it’s very peaceful”. Max McPartland added, “It’s relaxing to read in but also I like the way it is very bright and colourful”. Finally Louisa Mawdsley said,” It is different to what our class have had in the past and I really like it”.

Do you like this school so far and why? I am really enjoying Bickerstaffe School, mainly because all the children and staff have made me feel so welcome. I feel like I’ve always been here! Parents should be very proud of their kind, welcoming and polite children. What job did you have before this one? I did a couple of supply jobs with children who needed one to one support. Prior to training to be a teaching assistant, I was a full time mum and prior to having children, I was a doctor! I loved being a doctor but family life required a job re-think! My husband works in A&E and works long and awkward hours.
!
What is the highest mountain you have ever climbed? Snowdon in North Wales, which I have climbed seven times. The first time, when I was 12 years old, I broke my ankle on the way down falling in a rabbit hole! What do you like to do outside of school? I like to take my daughters, Emily (9), Annabel (12) and Charlotte (10) to their dancing lessons. We also enjoy going to stay in our family cottage in Wales.

What is the most embarrassing moment from your childhood? I remember being embarrassed when I was in Year 6 and I called a teacher ‘Mummy’ by mistake. I didn’t even say Mum, so it was even more embarrassing. As it happens the teacher had two sons so told me she would’ve loved a daughter! What was your favourite childhood book? Anne of Green Gables (and all of the sequels). Where do your daughters dance? They attend the Hamilton School of Dance and Drama in Maghull and Aughton.

Miss Wilson Bickerstaffe School’s new Class 2 teacher is taken to task by Year 6 pupil Jake Evans about everything he could possibly think of asking her! •

If you could travel anywhere you could, where would you go? I would fly to Australia and I’d like to stay in a nice hotel.
How have you enjoyed our school so far? And what has been the most embarrassing moment? It’s been brilliant getting to know people and my most embarrassing moment so far…definitely spilling paint all over the carpet! Why did you become a teacher? I always wanted to be a teacher, helping people to learn. Who was your favourite teacher when you were young? My teacher Mrs Jolly because she always did lots of singing. What is your favourite subject to teach and why? History because I have always found it really interesting. Which university did you go to? I went to Manchester Metropolitan University.
Where do you live? I live in Preston with my family. Do you have any pets? Yes a cat called Sid and four chickens. What was your favourite childhood book? The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton. What is your favourite animal? A cat because they get to sleep all day and also have fun in the sun not doing much. What was your childhood pet growing up? A few pigs and a cat called Rosy. Did you like school? Yes and I particularly liked playing sport. What primary and secondary school did you go to? St Leonard’s Primary and Penwortham Girls’ High School.

School play review
What a Knight A magical and musical production By Isabella Blain and Emily Peet Our school summer production took place on a Friday evening in July just before we finished for the holidays. This year we performed outside on the school’s gazebo and we also had a barbeque. Everyone tried their hardest and the costumes were phenomenal. Okay let’s stop messing around and let’s cut to the small talk! The musical production was about a little boy called Watt Cobblers who had a dream to become a knight and to one day rule the castle of Camelot. His mum sent him to Knight School because she wanted him to become a great leader. One day he was very late and, despite making up an excuse, his teacher Earl Axminster expelled him. So his mum thought that she should teach him how to cook instead. However this seemed like a bad idea after Watt put a sock and toilet roll in the mixture! In the end Watt turned out to be a pretty good knight and he even manged to get Excalibur back from the evil Black Knight, who was played by Year 6 pupil Reuben Warwick. The play was brilliant because we all knew our lines and we really enjoyed performing in front of the audience outside. Thank you for reading this and we hope you enjoyed our review.
