Maureen Tracey first came to live in Barbados as a young bride in the 70’s. Her roots became ingrained into the culture and beauty of the island as she moved between here and Canada. While travelling the world as a marketing executive in the textile industry, her exposure to colour and design complemented her artistic skills in the fashion industry, photography and ceramic work. Today she’s focused on being a full-time artist. Her fun-loving and whimsical oil paintings showcase aspects of Barbadian life that are slowly disappearing. Many of her paintings show her “Bajan Lovesheep”, the iconic blackbelly sheep, wearing little heart necklaces expressing the love Maureen feels for Barbados. CAPITAL CITY - Bridgetown, the main shopping centre. On June 25 2011, 'Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison' was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There is no other higher form of recognition for a heritage site in the World. A convenient shuttle service operates between hotels and Bridgetown - call 227-2200. CURRENCY - The Barbados Dollar is tied to the US Dollar at a rate of US$1 = Bds$1.98; other currencies fluctuate so check with the local banks or the press. DRESS - Keep swimwear on the beach. Camouflage is prohibited. ELECTRICITY - 110/230V 50Hz. HOURS OF BUSINESS - Banks open Monday to Thursday from 8am-3pm and Friday 8am-5pm. Supermarkets open daily from 8am and close between 7pm and 10pm in the evenings. Other retail outlets generally open Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm and on Saturday from 9am-2pm. Special opening hours in December. POPULATION - 287, 733 (2012). SIZE - 166 square miles, measuring 21 miles long x 14 miles wide. TAX - 17.5% VAT is usually included in prices quoted. 7.5% VAT and 10% service charge will be added to your hotel bill. TIPPING - Usually 10%–15%. WATER - Safe to drink from tap.

Take a walk at sunrise along the beach in Bathsheba and then have breakfast at either Round House or Atlantis Hotel. Take a late afternoon walk on the Richard Haynes Boardwalk in Hastings and then have sundowners at one of the restaurants there – Tapas, Blakey’s, Naru or Accra Deck. Take the Bridgetown Express bus to see UNESCO World Hertitage Bridgetown and its Garrison. Visit the Mikvah (ceremonial bath for Jewish women) at the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere.

Go on a sailing cruise early on in your holiday because chances are, you will want to go again! Maybe the second time around you could choose a sunset cruise. The catamarans are smooth, fast and very comfortable. Hire a speedboat to take you to Carlisle Bay. Go snorkeling in Carlisle Bay Marine Park over one of 6 shipwrecks or just take a walk along this beautiful stretch of beach.

Pack a picnic or have one prepared for you and enjoy a day on the breezy south-east coast at Bottom Bay, the Crane Beach or Foul Bay. Why not visit Silver Sands on the south coast where on windy days you can watch kite and windsurfing. There is a small park with picnic benches and bathroom facilities. Bottom Bay has steps leading to the beach and a few beach chairs for rent. Crane Beach has chairs for rent. Foul Bay has great access by car down to picnic spots but no rental chairs. See page 124 for a list of picnic suppliers. Experience a turtle hatchling release. Call the turtle hotline at 230-0142 between June and December to find out when and where. Sunset and supper. Book an early supper at an ocean front restaurant on the south or west coast half an hour before sunset and enjoy the tranquil beauty.

HISTORY - The original inhabitants were the Amerindians. The island was settled by the English in 1627 and remained under British rule for its entire history until gaining independence in 1966. GOVERNMENT - Politically stable and a member of the British Commonwealth, the constitution is based on the British style of parliamentary democracy. Barbados Sea Turtles Four species of sea turtles visit our waters—hawksbill, green, leatherback and occasionally loggerhead. The herbivorous green turtles, many hatched in Ascension Island, Costa Rica and Mexico, come here in large numbers and settle for several years foraging among the sea grasses. Critically endangered leatherbacks and hawksbills nest on our shores. All of these ancient marine reptiles have survived virtually unchanged for 150 million years of evolution in the ocean. Strong and graceful in the water, they are lumbering hulks on land, making them vulnerable to predators. So why go there? To lay eggs. Of the hundreds of eggs that each turtle deposits in the sand, only one or two turtles will survive to breeding age about 25 years later. The eggs, hatchlings and mature turtles are eaten by crabs, birds, fish, dogs, mongoose, and ‌. people, although it is illegal to catch sea turtles or to possess any turtle product in Barbados. Barbados has had stellar success in their revitalization of the turtle population due to the work of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project at the University of the West Indies (UWI). Since monitoring and conservation activities began in 1980, numbers of nesting hawksbills, easily recognizable by their hawk-like face, have risen from just 30 to over 500 per year.

Indeed, Barbados has become a regionally significant nesting ground for hawksbills and has been featured in documentaries by Discovery, BBC and Animal Planet. Mature female turtles return to the beaches that they themselves hatched on and mate with several males before beginning to lay eggs. Females will nest every few weeks, up to 5 times, over the course of the nesting season. Upon hatching, the tiny turtles swim away from Barbados and float in currents, as they are taken on a journey of thousands of miles around the Atlantic Ocean. Those that survive the trip will eventually settle back in the Caribbean region to feed and grow; and from there make their migrations to and from Barbados’ beaches. Interestingly, some of the young hawksbills that can be seen feeding on our reefs originated from as far away as West Africa, and will return there to nest! Turtles eat a variety of foods, including sea grass, algae and sponges. Some species eat jellyfish, which is why plastic bags must be kept out of the sea. Turtles can eat them by mistake. The success story of Barbados turtles will hopefully be an on-going one, thanks mainly to the efforts of dedicated students and volunteers. The Barbados Sea Turtle Project operates a 24 hour “Sea Turtle Hotline” (230 0142) to monitor sea turtle sightings and address sea turtle “emergencies”. The Project constantly struggles to maintain its financial sustainability (a challenge in this time of cut backs). Snorkeling There are excellent snorkeling opportunities in Barbados. Go into the sea anywhere where it is calm enough to snorkel and there will almost certainly be something to see. Naturally some fish are easier to see or find than others, but a helpful hint would be to look around obstacles such as rocks, logs, cement blocks and old reef structures. Lower down in the wrecks it is possible to see squirrelfish and snapper and on the surrounding reefs trumpetfish, butterfly fish, surgeonfish and the smooth trunkfish. For the intrepid snorkeler, a daring swim over shallow rocky areas in calm seas can be very rewarding, particularly with encounters of small creatures. It is here where the elusive mantis shrimp lurks, a fabulous rare shrimp which is found throughout the world but rarely seen. Also lettuce slugs, starfish, tiny pencil stars and sea urchins. As well as exploring on your own, it is possible to experience the joy of snorkeling if you take a day-cruise on one of the pleasure boats, most of which provide equipment and instruction free of charge and take you to one of the designated dive areas. There is much to explore in the Garrison Historic Area where a collection of solid and graceful Georgian structures encircle one of the oldest racetracks in the world. Based in the beautiful old military prison, the Barbados Museum depicts the island’s colourful past, including its African heritage. Deep within the eerie bulwark of St. Ann’s Fort, the National Armoury & Cannon Museum displays the world’s finest collection of 17th century English iron cannon. The George Washington Attraction is the only house outside of the USA where young George Washington resided during his visit in 1751 — the tour includes an interesting film about Washington’s time here and a chance to explore the recently rediscovered network of “secret” tunnels running beneath the Garrison complex. Every Thursday at 11:45am there is a Changing of the Sentry Ceremony at the Main Guard, performed in the 1858 Zouave uniform. Visitors really enjoy this colourful event. Little Bay on the rugged north shore of the island
Exploring the West & North of Barbados The west coast is home to Holetown, in the parish of St. James, the site where John Powell landed in 1625 to claim Barbados in the name of England’s King James. Nowadays, it is a busy area of posh hotels, exquisite restaurants, trendy bars and irresistible shops. Shopping in this area has recently been taken up several notches with the opening of the magnificent Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, a vibrant community for shops, entertainment and enjoyment, with many of the world’s leading retail brands opening flagship stores there alongside trendy cafÊs, gourmet food stores and state of the art movie theatres. Just north of Holetown is St. James Parish Church, which stands on one of the oldest parcels of consecrated land on the island and is often referred to as "God's acre". Many of the original settlers and a number of prominent Barbadians were laid to rest in the church and adjoining graveyard. Continuing north into St. Peter, make a stop at The Shell Gallery, just off Highway 1 in the Gibbes area. They have an abundance of shells from around the world and many other shell related gift items for the shell enthusiast. Nearby, Gibbes Beach and Mullins are perfect for a swim and a bite to eat at the brightly painted, very laid back, Bombas Beach Bar.

A few miles further north is Speightstown, once a fort and thriving port, today it is a fishing port and commercial centre though much of the 19th century architecture and charm still remains. It was often referred to as “Little Bristol” because of the trading connections with Bristol in England. For an interesting glimpse into the history of Speightstown, visit Arlington House Museum. The quaint little fishing village of Six Men’s has produced some of the island’s most skilled boat builders. Interestingly, during the 19th century, whalers set sail from this area. Today, fishermen still bring their fresh catches ashore here and sell them at the roadside. The delightful Fish Pot Restaurant at Little Good Harbour is a wonderful stop for lunch as you explore the north of the island. The full fury of the Atlantic Ocean pounds the steep, weathered cliffs of the northern coastline. The resulting erosion provides countless photo opportunities with dramatic rock formations, powerful blow holes and sea caves. The Animal Flower Cave is located on the rugged cliff tops at the northernmost point of the island. This large sea cave with several

The name historically comes from the many sea anemones that were present when the cave was discovered in 1753. Waves permitting, you can have a delicious swim in the natural rock pool in the cave. huge chambers is filled with pools, unusual rock formations and a few sea anemones. There are some wonderful photo opportunities to be had along the rugged north eastern coastline, particularly at Little Bay and Cove Bay. The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is set amidst a lush Mahogany grove where you can mingle with free roaming monkeys, turtles, deer, maras and many other animals. There is a much-improved walk-in bird sanctuary and iguana sanctuary. Just next door, Grenade Hall Forest & Signal Station houses many interesting artifacts, including pre-Colombian tools unearthed during its restoration. The forest has over 2 km of trails winding through many species of trees and plant life – intriguing, informative and educational. Another fascinating stop in the north is St. Nicholas Abbey, thought to be one of only three remaining Jacobean houses in the western hemisphere, and probably the oldest original building on the island. Visitors can also view the restored 1890 steam mill grinding sugar cane in the old syrup factory and sample their special aged rum in the plantation bond where it is hand-bottled and sold.
The central portion of Barbados is exceptionally verdant with rolling hills and mile upon mile of sugar cane fields. St. George and St. Thomas are the only two parishes not bordered by the sea. An essential stop in the lofty hills of St. Thomas is Earthworks Pottery, a working pottery carrying irresistible, functional works of art. Visitors can tour the work area of the pottery and chat with the potters. On the grounds you’ll also find On the Wall Art Gallery, Tulis Batik and the lovely Treetops Café where you can sit on the breezy verandah and enjoy the panorama of the surrounding countryside. In close proximity you’ll discover some of the island’s most treasured sites, all within a relatively small radius: Welchman Hall Gully; the breathtaking Harrison’s Cave, and the exquisitely landscaped Flower Forest. In St. George, orchid lovers will be astounded at the thousands of spectacular orchids on display at Orchid World. While in the area, visit the interesting Exclusive Cottons of the Caribbean Ginnery and Visitor Centre (call ahead to arrange a tour 433 3108).

The extraordinarily beautiful Hunte’s Gardens – a sanctuary of tranquility
Follow the signs to Hunte’s Gardens in the lush hills of St. Joseph – a real treat for all garden enthusiasts. Legendary horticulturalist, Anthony Hunte has lovingly landscaped an arena-sized natural sink hole into what can only be described as a stunning tropical garden!
The Wild & Rugged East The Ermy Bourne Highway hugs the east coast from Belleplaine at the northern end, through to Cattlewash. In the area of Belleplaine, stop by Sand Dunes, a friendly, casual roadside bar and restaurant run by Curtis Hall – they serve ice cold drinks and the tastiest fresh grilled fish with macaroni pie. Further along the Ermy Bourne Highway is Cattlewash and its wild, Atlantic seascape, with the spectacular clay escarpment of Chalky Mount, rising up dramatically inland. Be sure to take a leisurely stroll along the lovely South Coast boardwalk which meanders along the waterfront between Rockley and Hastings. Sightseeing Cricket Legends of Barbados “Visit! Explore! Relive the experience!!” Take a stroll down memory lane at the Cricket Museum on Fontabelle – home of the Cricket Legends of Barbados. Buying Property in Barbados Property must pass conveyance of title, evidenced by the recording of the deeds and certified survey plans at the registry of title. A purchaser will Serenity require a registered Barbadian attorney to search the register and establish title to the property prior to the completion of sale. The parties sign a binding contract and the vendor’s attorney holds the deposit until completion, at which time the balance of the price is paid. Once an agreement has been made and a 10% deposit of the agreed price has been paid, then the deal must proceed or the deposit is forfeited. The title may be taken in a person’s name or through a corporate vehicle set up to own the property. It is possible for non-residents to purchase property through a company that may be incorporated outside Barbados, but which must be registered in Barbados. The sale of property by all persons, including citizens or permanent residents, is subject to property transfer tax of 2.5%, plus approximately 1% stamp duty. However, the first $125,000 of the sale proceeds is exempt from property transfer tax provided that there is a building on the property. Attorney’s fees for both the seller and the purchaser are approximately 1.5% to 2% of the sale price. The real estate agent’s commission fees are normally 5% of the sale. Both fees are subject to 15% VAT. Any owner of land in Barbados is required to pay an annual land tax at the following rates: First BB$125,000 = 0%, next BB$225,000 = 0.10%, next BB$500,000 = 0.65%, excess over BB$850,000 = 0.75% Following enactment of new legislation, there is a BB$60,000 cap on land tax rates, provided that the house is used exclusively as a residence by the person who owns the land upon which the house is erected. Barbados has attracted the attention of high-profile international companies such as Sotheby’s, Knight Frank and Savills. This is a great endorsement of real estate in Barbados as a safe investment for foreign purchasers.

Here is a brief coast-bycoast guide to some of our favourites. Beware of the poisonous manchineel trees (usually marked with a red ring around the trunk) with their yellow-green “apples” found along the west coast beaches - the tree and its fruit cause severe blistering.

Calm, clear water, good swimming and snorkeling – lots of watersports. If you need masks and fins for snorkeling visit Hazell’s Waterworld in Carlisle Bay, St. Michael (see page 68). The earlier you get to the beach on the west coast, the better - its best in the mornings while there’s some shade. For Glass Bottom Boat Tours call Monica at Shamon Too (233 6089) or Max and Michael at Team Baywatch Watersports (249 5115 or 232 8157). Speightstown Area: In the north, between Half Moon Fort and Speightstown, there are a number of beaches with excellent swimming and snorkeling conditions. South of Port St. Charles there is parking and public access to a lovely stretch of beach. Mullins Bay: Mullins is very busy with chair/umbrella rentals, beach service of drinks and food, toys in the sea for clambering about on and constant availability of watersports operators. Bombas Beach Bar, located just north of Mullins is a great spot for food and drinks.

for snorkeling. Alleyne’s Bay has chair rentals. Lower Carlton and Gibbes are lovely quiet beaches with easy access, but no beach facilities. Heron Bay: There is a small amount of parking on the road between Colony Club and Heron Bay – a quiet beach with excellent swimming. Folkestone Marine Reserve: A large area of marine reserve. Good snorkeling – equipment and lockers available for rent at the visitors centre. Ample shade, picnic tables and parking. Holetown Area: Zaccios Beach Bar & Restaurant is right on the beach serving food and drinks all day with beach chair rentals. Paynes Bay: White sandy beach, a favourite with families and cruise ship passengers. Ideal swimming and snorkeling conditions – you may even spot some turtles. The public access path north of No. 1 Sandy Lane, is the closest access to the splendid Sandy Lane beach which also has excellent swimming conditions. Fitts Village and Batts Rock: Quiet stretch of beach - good snorkeling. Lunch at Il Tempio Restaurant & Beach Bar, happy hours 4-6pm daily, closed Mondays. Brighton Beach: This is a quiet stretch of beach just off the Spring Garden Highway.

Small to medium waves except Carlisle Bay and Sandy Beach which are both very calm. Good conditions for body surfing, surfing and windsurfing. Carlise Bay: A stunning stretch of beach from Bridgetown to the Hilton Hotel. Great for swimming and walking. Umbrellas and sun loungers available for rent at Harbour Lights along with drinks and local food off the grill. Lobster Alive rents chairs and umbrellas. You can sit in your swimsuit with your toes in the sand and devour a freshly cooked lobster. Pebbles Beach: Located between the Hilton Hotel and the Radisson Aquatica Hotel. Lovely beach, amazing swimming conditions. Look out for Paddle Barbados or What’SUP and do some Stand Up Paddling, then try a Bajan fish cutter from Cuz’s food stall.
Accra Beach (Rockley Beach): Very popular – lots of activity, food stalls, parking, beach chair, umbrella & boogie board rentals. Good for body surfing and body watching!

Biggest waves – strong and dangerous undercurrents. Cattlewash: Miles upon miles of untouched beach along the island’s most rugged stretch of coast. Swimming here is extremely dangerous! There are some shallow rock pools at low tide. Exercise extreme caution. Bathsheba: Fresh ocean breezes and pounding surf, a favourite with surfers. See the restaurant guide for lunch spots. CAUTION: The east coast has very dangerous currents – it is NOT safe for swimming!

South-East Coast Big waves, some currents – be sure to keep within your depth. Crane Beach: One of the world’s most glorious beaches. Great for boogie boarding. Chair and umbrella rentals. Drinks sold on the beach. Lunch at L’Azure or The Carriage House at The Crane Resort features fresh fish and lobster. Cutters of Barbados is located very nearby and they serve delicious sandwiches, pizzas, salads, etc. They will deliver any size picnic to the beach including their special rum punch, beer and wine! Foul Bay: A spectacular stretch of beach with a pleasant shaded area for picnics and easy parking. Exercise extreme caution when swimming as there are strong currents. For security reasons, you are advised to use the northern end where the NCC wardens are present. Bottom Bay: Beautiful, often deserted bay north of the Crane and east point. Park on the clifftop and go down the steps – beach chairs available for rent. Watch out for undercurrents. Harrismith: A deserted beach that is probably best to visit in a group for a picnic. There are lovely shallow pools formed by a natural breakwater.

SEASONING is the cornerstone of tasty Bajan cooking, used to stuff or marinate fish, chicken and meat or added to stocks and soups. It is widely available ready made but is also easy to make at home. The ingredients include spring onions, garlic, onions, fresh thyme, marjoram, parsley, basil, cumin, celery salt, paprika, black pepper, ground cloves and scotch bonnet pepper.

very representative of the heritage of Barbados. Cou Cou has its roots in a ground corn dish made in Africa but here it has been enhanced by the nutritious okra. The incredible skill of removing hundreds of bones from the flying fish is quite unique to Barbados. It is done with a speed and precision that defies belief. It is traditionally served on Fridays, garnished with dressed cucumber and served with pepper sauce. BAJAN PEPPER SAUCE Traditional Bajan pepper sauce is made up of Scotch Bonnett peppers, turmeric root, hot mustard powder, onions, shallots, vinegar, horseradish root, salt and vinegar. Some people add white rum which makes it hotter. This pepper sauce goes well with fish, cheese, ham and hot salt fish cakes.

SALT FISH CAKES - Hot Bajan fish cakes go like smoke in the wind. They are made with flour and salt fish, originally salted cod from Canada. This was imported along with the pine that built the beautiful chattel houses here in exchange for sugar and rum that Barbados exported north to the Canadians. MACARONI CHEESE OR ‘PIE” This is the most commonly served dish in Barbados. It usually has a generous amount of cheese and is very well flavoured. RICE AND STEW - Barbados is famous for tasty stews and the secret is the careful combination of fresh herbs, Bajan seasoning and just the right amount of pepper. Beetroots, carrots and the delicious nutty taste of green bananas lightens up the traditionally spicy Bajan beef stew. CUTTERS - A cutter is a sandwich made with a Bajan salt bread. Country bakeries and the big commercial operations alike churn them out in vast quantities every day. Cheddar cheese, freshly baked ham or pork, fried egg and fish are the popular cutters. ‘Cuz’ on Pebbles Beach serves his special of egg, cheese and fish. Bajan pepper sauce goes very well with a cutter. PUDDING AND SOUSE Saturday in Barbados is pudding and souse day although you can find it being served all week long.

The tradition goes back to the era before refrigeration when pigs were slaughtered before dawn on Saturday morning. The head was boiled and soused with lime, salt, cucumber, scotch bonnet pepper, parsley and onion. The intestine or belly was stuffed with a mixture of the pigs blood, finely grated sweet potato, pepper and fresh herbs and steamed into black pudding. Today, blood is seldom used and much of the pudding served is just the seasoned sweet potato. Eating pudding and souse on a Saturday can be a social occasion where people of all walks of life meet at popular souse ‘limes’ to imbibe a few ‘grogs’, ‘slam’ some dominoes and shoot the breeze. PORK - The leg or shoulder of pork is roasted whole on Sundays or on special occasions and served with the crackling and a gravy made from the pork dripping, onion and pepper. The leg and shoulder are also made into a delicious ham which is traditionally baked with cloves. The chops are fried or “stewed down” with thyme, marjoram, nutmeg, onions and tomato. PIGEON PEAS are a locally grown legume that are served either stewed or cooked in rice. Pigeon peas and millet (locally known as guinea corn flour) are combined to make an old traditional Christmas dish called Jug Jug.

PLANTAINS are grown and eaten throughout the Caribbean. Masquerading as very large bananas, they are unpalatable unless cooked. They can be peeled, sliced diagonally and fried in a little oil or sliced, wrapped in bacon and baked in a medium oven for 20-25 minutes. Plantains possess a subtle sweetness that goes well with chicken, pork and fish. BREADFRUIT - Large, lush breadfruit trees grow throughout the Caribbean bearing the football like starchy staple that has kept hunger away from many a household. PUMPKIN is another popular local crop that is often served as a side dish or in pumpkin soup. Pumpkin Fritters dusted with sugar and spice are also served as a side dish with meals as opposed to a dessert. BANANA BREAD is a nutritious Caribbean specialty. It is deliciously moist so there is no temptation to spread it with butter. COCONUT BREAD is a sweet, stodgy bread that goes well with an early morning or afternoon cup of tea. Restaurant Guide The quality of the restaurants in Barbados is superb, ranging from fine dining establishments to friendly beach bars and bistros, so visitors can enjoy a wonderful variety of dining options while on the island. Wherever you decide to dine, be sure to try the island’s fresh fish. A very good choice is Mahi Mahi or Dorado, referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fish is absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the beloved porpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other recommended catches include Flying Fish, Barracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish. Shrimp here are usually very large and very good. Most of the beef served is very high quality US Prime. Unless otherwise stated all prices are in Barbados dollars and include 17.5% VAT. A restaurant bill is usually not presented until it is requested. Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners, there are many that are fully booked in advance, especially between December and May, so reservations are highly recommended. Bon Appétit!

Driving Tips in a Nutshell Visitors must produce a valid driver’s licence in order to obtain a Visitor’s Permit which is issued by the car hire companies for BB$10 – it is valid for two months from the date of issue. Remember, in Barbados we drive on the left and seat belts are compulsory. The price of gasoline fluctuates throughout the year, however, at press time the price is BB$3.42/litre. Speed limits vary depending on the area, but generally in built up areas or the city its 40 km/h, rural areas outside the city, 60 km/h and the ABC Highway, 80 km/h. When you hear the honk of a horn it can have a variety of meanings: it could be a warning, or a "hello" to a passing friend, or an "Excuse me, I'm coming!" If someone flashes their headlights at you at a junction it usually means "Proceed, I'm letting you go first." The roundabout system of lanes: when taking the first left exit off the roundabout you should remain in the left lane; when proceeding straight, take either lane and filter at the exit, all other exits off the roundabout remain in the right lane. Always give way to traffic on your right at the roundabout. Visitors are easily identifiable on the road by the ‘H’ number plate and Bajans are usually accommodating of your confusion and always willing to point you in the right direction. However, since the ‘H’ does identify you as a visitor you can be a target for pickpockets and harassing vagrants. Authorized security personnel at all attractions and places of interest are usually in uniform, so do not pay anyone else who claims to be “security” to guard your vehicle. Please be careful with your possessions and place them in the boot/trunk wherever possible and ensure that the vehicle is always locked when unattended. If you have an accident, you must leave your vehicle in its position and call your car hire company and the police immediately – do not admit liability. For Police dial 211 and ambulance 511.

Barbados is considered to be a safe place but always be as cautious as you would be at home. Exercise common sense when venturing into isolated locations; secure your valuables; never leave your belongings unattended on the beach or in full view in a locked car; always leave your key at front desk as lost keys mean insecurity. Barbados has never had a shark attack. The most common sharks are Nurse Sharks, which do not attack. There are no poisonous spiders or snakes but a centipede bite, though not poisonous, can be very painful.

Barbados is close to the equator and the sun can cause severe damage to the skin, so be sure to use a good sun screen and sit under an umbrella. Before sitting under a coconut tree, check that there are no brown coconuts or drooping brown branches that are apt to fall. If you are stuck by the spines of the black sea urchins found on the reef, although painful, they are harmless and will eventually dissolve and be absorbed by the body. Only pull them out if they are clearly protruding.
