A Lifetime of Breast Health

A

woman’s breasts are a key part of her experience of herself. More than just mammary glands, they are also a secondary sexual characteristic which contributes to her beauty, self-esteem and to her sexual arousal. Yet, according to A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, close to 250,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in America annually. A woman’s breasts may also be perceived as a threat. Breast health begins in early childhood, before the onset of puberty. According to Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism 20.5 (2009), childhood obesity in girls contributes to early menarche and thus to an increased lifetime risk of breast cancer. However, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol 54, reports that a vegetarian diet high in fiber slows the onset of puberty, contributing to future breast health. As breast buds begin to develop Ayurveda suggests use of supportive herbs such as Shatavari. Roast 1oz of Shatavari with 1 or 2 tbsps ghee in a cast iron pan until light brown, adding 2 tbsp turbinado sugar, 2 pinches saffron and a pinch of cardamom. A teaspoon of this recipe can be taken twice daily to support healthy breast development. During the reproductive years, the breasts undergo cyclical changes, increasing in size during the second half of the cycle. To help prevent fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer, the Journal of Applied Nutrition 1995, vol47, suggests it is best to avoid tight bras or underwires and to select only natural fibers such as cotton. Research in European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, Jan 1994, found that daily breast massage with strokes towards the axilla increases blood flow, stimulates lymphatic drainage and enhances oxytocin production. A mixture of castor, coconut and flax oil is ideal for massaging tender or lumpy breasts, while shatavari ghee breast massage is traditionally used to increase breast size. Pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid using soap on the nipples as this will destroy the natural antibacterial secretions of the Montgomery Glands. During the post-menopausal years, the breasts gradually undergo regression. ‘Enjoy them while you’ve got them,’ said one 85-year-old! Continue daily breast massage and also take rejuvenative herbs to support breast health such as Energy Balls – made from tahini, almond butter, honey, Shatavari and Viadari rolled in coconut flakes. A feature of the special genius of Ayurveda is the use of diet, lifestyle and herbs not only to manage diseases but also to support health throughout all the stages of life.
