ot plans for Labor Day? You do now! Staten Island’s only county fair -- one of the biggest, longest running and well-attended festivals in the county – is celebrating its 40th anniversary and everyone is invited! The Richmond County Fair has been an Island icon for four decades, combining classic fairground favorites, such as carnival rides, games of chance and delicious fair food with live music, all while supporting local businesses and authentic Staten Island staples. The event will feature a three-three day, three-stage music festival with over 100 vendors, games and contests like three-legged races and pie-eating, plus pony rides, obstacle courses, historic trades demonstrations, bouncy houses and more. This year a new theme has been introduced in celebration of Staten Island’s rich and diverse culture. Favorite local eating establishments such as Corner House BBQ and Flagship Brewery will be serving up some yummy eats while Makerpark Radio and We Just Workin’ will be hosting their own music stages. A section of the fair will be deemed the “Staten Island Culture Crawl” and will feature local cultural institutions, artists, musicians, live art demonstrations, grafitti art and more. The can’t-miss event takes place Saturday, August 31 to Monday, September 2, 12-6pm daily on the grounds of Historic Richmond Town at 441 Clarke Avenue. And here’s some great news: ticket prices are lower than they’ve been in years. Admission is just $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, and $5 for kids. Head over to historicrichmondtown.org for more information. 8 August 2019 • siparent.com

Free Soccer Program for Children with Special Needs

Pitbulls and Addicts

The Special Olympics Soccer League of Staten Island has once again teamed up with the Staten Island Youth Soccer League to provide a free soccer program for children with special needs. Through six sessions in both the fall and spring, kids will learn basic soccer skills through teamwork and group interaction guided by experienced soccer coaches. The sessions will be held at Owl Creek Park and children as young as four years old can enroll. The next session will begin in mid-September. For more information about the program and to learn how to register, contact Chris Rooney at crooneycmr@aol.com.

That’s What Friends Are For Are you a parent? Do you live in Staten Island? If you answered yes to both questions, you NEED to join Staten Island Parent’s Family of Friends! Bloomingdale Park is blooming One of the best parks on the Island is about to get even better. Local officials joined the Parks Dept. last month in breaking ground on a major construction project at Bloomingdale Park. Upgrades include a brand new multi-use synthetic turf field which can accommodate activities including free play, toss sports, picnics, a fully reconstructed synthetic turf soccer field amd more. The $3.3 million project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2020. “If I marketed a magical elixir that would help ward off illness such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and that also improved all aspects of one’s physical, mental and socio-emotional health, while improving cognitive function and academic performance of students, Staten Islanders would buy it by the case,” BP Oddo said. “That wondrous ‘potion’ does not come in a bottle; it comes in the form of movement. It’s called exercise.”

Mike Favor needs your help. The founder of Freedom Home, a Staten Island-based organization that works to rescue abandoned pitbulls suffered a devastating loss last month after a fire destroyed all of his outside kennels and a shed containing thousands of dollars in tools and supplies. While he is grateful that no animals were harmed, he needs to rebuild in order to continue his wonderful operation. Go to gofundme.com/pitbullsampaddicts-fire-damaged-kennel-shed-rebuild to donate to this amazing cause. Pitbulls and Addicts was started in 2017 by Mr. Favor as he overcame his addiction to drugs, and the volunteers to his organization are primarily made up of former addicts who are passionate about saving these precious animals. Their mission is to foster home for animals in need and help the fosters prepare for a new home while using their love and affection as a therapy for individuals who struggle with addiction. All Freedom Home animals are up for adoption through No More Pain Rescue. If you know of an animal in need contact omorepainrescue@gmail.com or visit the on social media @nomorepainrescue.

Mrs. Rosemary’s Dance Studio Congratulations to Mrs. Rosemary’s Dance Studio, who has just celebrated their 60th year! Thousands have danced through Mrs. Rosemary’s doors throughout the years, where generations of families have attended. Mrs. Rosemary taught for 50 wonderful years and her daughters now carry on her legacy by running the school and continuing its success. The non-competitive New Dorp dance school offers students plenty of performing opportunities throughout the year in an effort to make their dancers stronger performers as well as give back to their community. Mrs. Rosemary’s students dance at local festivals, restaurant crawls, parades, fundraisers, private parties and will be dancing in Disney once again next year. Many alumni have gone on to become professional dancers/ performers and gain success in the entertainment industry. Current dance captain Gabriella performs in Hamilton on Broadway; Victoria Miranda works on Jimmy Fallon’s Late Show; Anna Polyachenko and Arianna Andretta are currently doing summer stock/and regional shows and tours. Six girls have gone on to be Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. Successful graduates notwithstanding, the school’s mission is simply for students to leave the studio with confidence and self esteem.

Marguerite Maria Rivas is Staten Island’s first Poet Laureate.

Tickets for ‘Breast Cancer Diaries’ are on sale now.

Staten Island Poet Laureate

Breast Cancer Diaries

Borough President James Oddo recently named Marguerite Maria Rivas as Staten Island’s first Poet Laureate. The appointment of the Staten Island Poet Laureate is an unpaid, volunteer position, appointed for a 4-year term by the Borough President. The Poet Laureate will be charged with performing responsibilities related to community outreach and projects that promote poetry and/or literacy on the Island. “I’ve become a big fan of our new Poet Laureate Dr. Marguerite Maria Rivas because her deep affinity for Staten Island is quite evident. I love the way she champions our community,” said Borough President James Oddo. “I didn’t know there was in fact already a de facto Poet Laureate for Staten Island, tonight she is de facto no more. I love having you as an ally, please continue to do your wonderful work.” “Staten Island has always been my home, my subject, and my inspiration,” said Dr. Rivas. “Throughout my adult life, it has been my privilege to have taught poetry in the community, in grammar schools, and in colleges. Poetry brings people joy, an understanding of themselves, and an awareness of their connectedness to their communities and the world around them. It is a living, breathing expression of shared experiences.”

Tickets are on sale now for Breast Cancer Diaries, a play about living with breast cancer which shares a little bit of drama and a whole lot of comedy & inspiration. The Staten Island showing will be held on October 5, 7–8:30pm at the Hampton Inn, 1120 South Ave. A Manhattan showing will be held on October 22 at TADA! Theatre 15 W 28th Street. For tickets and information, go to cancertamer.org.

Running the Company Start as a student and finish as a CEO! The Staten Island Chamber of Commerce Foundation Young Entrepreneurs Academy (SICCF YEA!) is offering business-minded high school students the chance to learn how to start and run their own real companies. The only program of its kind in New York City, students enrolled in the YEA! program learn from local business owners and educators to develop ideas, create business platforms and then deliver a funding pitch at the Investors Panel, the YEA! version of TV’s Shark Tank. Students are also mentored through the trademark and branding of their product. Upon completing the program, students own and manage their own functioning businesses. The program will run from October 2019 to May 2020. The deadline to apply is September 15. To register or learn more information about the YEA! Program, go to sichamber.com/promo/yea.

Enjoy Summer with Your Teen 9 ways to enjoy the summer together

By Rebecca Hastings Rebecca Hastings is a mom, writer, and motivational speaker. Read her blog at rebeccahastings.net.

Days are slipping away. We feel them through our fingertips like the sand our kids once played in. No matter how tight I clench my fist the sand keeps falling. Instead of holding so tight, maybe we need to relax. Open our hands. Let the sand rest there a moment before we reach down and grab another handful.

Introduce them to a movie from your youth. They’ll think its fun to make fun of the clothing and hair and cheesy movie lines. You’ll enjoy the walk down memory lane with your teen. Let them plan a day for the family. Give them a budget and let them take the lead. It’s exciting to see what they come up with. You might be surprised by how they choose to spend their time with you. Read a book together. Maybe not aloud together, but pick a book you can both enjoy. I find my teen reads far faster than I can, so I have to make a conscious effort on this one. Without making it formal, just find times to slip the story into conversation. It’s a connection you can both enjoy. Pick a show to watch together. Start with episode one, pop some popcorn and enjoy a good binge fest together. While I often lament having my quiet evenings from back in the days of 8 pm bedtimes, you have time to relax together. Find a way to enjoy it. Go to a game or a concert. It doesn’t have to be the major leagues or a top musician, but find a local game for a sport your kid loves or a local concert for a style of music your teen enjoys.

Be the house the kids want to come to. This one isn’t as bonding as some of the other ideas on the list, but when you create an atmosphere your teen and her friends want to be in it is so good. Not only is your teen around more, but you get to know her friends and see them interact together. Serve someone else. Find something you can do for someone else together. Good places to try are soup kitchens, reading to kids (even summer camps and summer school may offer opportunities), cleaning up a park, or bringing a meal to someone who could use some help. It doesn’t have to be complex, it just needs to be about giving. Play their game. Sometimes teens are wrapped up in the latest game or app. Get involved. It will most likely be funny, but giving them the chance to show you how to do something creates a special bond. Recognizing their expertise helps them feel respected and that goes a long way. Dream together. Asking questions is a great way to see glimpses of your teen that you never imagined, like: What is your dream vacation? What kind of house do you think you’ll live in? If you could eat anything in the world for your last meal what would it be?

Important Educational Questions educators weigh in on current topics

Experienced educators and authors Peggy Gisler and Marge Eberts give solid advice about everything school and education-related. Read more Q & A on siparent.com/dearteacher Parents should send questions and comments to dearteacher@dearteacher.com

Question: How much routine should we have in our family on school days? I don’t want every minute of the day to be organized for our children. – For Some Routine Answer: There are no hard and fast rules about how much routine children should have during the school year. Routines need to reflect each child’s personality and needs. For example, a child with ADHD will definitely profit from quite a bit of structure while one who seems to have a built-in organizer can function with far fewer routines. There is a need to have some routines in every home just to make things function smoothly. This should include a morning routine that will have a time for getting up and dressed, eating and for leaving the home with everything needed for school. Most homes also have homework and bedtime routines to give a sameness to every day. No routine should cover every minute of the day. Free time needs to be part of every routine. Basic routines need to be written out and displayed. Pictures can be used for young children. And there is another thing about following routines, they need to be flexible. They will change as activities are added or

eliminated. When routines are disrupted by outside events, such as a traffic jams, dinner and homework projects, they can be changed. To help some children follow routines, especially early morning ones, a kitchen timer can be used to show when a particular activity should begin or end. Rewards can also be used if they are an effective tool in encouraging children to follow routines. Finally, if a routine doesn’t seem to be working, change it. And the older your children get, the more input you should get from them. Question: All we ever hear about is that kids need to be creative. Of course, I want my kids to be creative. Beyond what the teachers are doing with their assignments, how can I foster their creativity? – For Creativity Answer: One of the keynotes to creativity is being curious about things. Babies and toddlers are naturally curious. To them everything is fascinating. You can build on this by talking with them about what they see as wonderful. For example, when they observe that the moon is a circle. Ask them: what other circle shapes do you see in the sky, on cars

LIPM or in our home? And when they express an interest in anything from coins to birds, help them build upon it with books, videos and conversations. As children grow older, they move more toward finding the right answer rather than going deeper and finding out more about things. So, help them widen their horizons by finding out more about opposing views or connections to other things. This is certainly an easy thing to do with a subject like politics. Asking “what do you think?” is always a good way to start them thinking creatively. Another is to take a common item like a coat hanger and ask what else could this be used for. This will get your children thinking outside the box which is what creative people do. There is one other big thing that parents can do to raise creative children. They can in their own lives show the children their own wonder and curiosity about things. Plus, another helpful trait of creating creativity in children lies getting them accustomed to different ways of handling obstacles from a difficult math problem to a bully. Asking the right questions can accelerate this process. Question: My child will start an excellent school this year according to all my neighbors. What should I do before the first day? - Wondering Answer: Begin by asking the school principal for a school handbook. This will answer many questions that will arise over the year. If your school doesn’t have a handbook, ask the principal and teachers questions such as the following: • What teaching methods and materials are used? Are the methods used to teach reading and math based on scientific evidence about what works best? Are science and social studies materials up to date? • How much time is spent on each subject such as reading, math, science and history? • How does the school measure student progress? What tests does it use? • Does the school meet state standards and guidelines? • Are teachers highly qualified? Do they meet state certification requirements? • For children beginning kindergarten, ask: What areas are emphasized in the kindergarten program? How focused is it on academic instruction? • If you have not seen it, ask to look at the school’s report card. These report cards show how your school compares to others in the district and indicate how well it is succeeding. • Find out if the school has a website and, if so, get the address. School websites can provide you with ready access to all kinds of information – schedules of events, names of people to contact, rules and regulations. • Let your children know that you think that school and learning are very important this will help your children to develop a positive attitude towards school.

Back to School Readiness Checklist Don’t let the first day of school sneak up on you! Here’s how to make sure the whole family is set for the new school year. By Jeannine Cintron, a Staten Island mom of two — one of whom is starting middle school in September (good luck Mikey!).

P prepare

P first day • Prepare the night before: set the breakfast table, pack lunches, lay out clothes, organize supplies and fill book bags.

• Your child likely needs more than a new backpack and lunchbox for the first day. Purchase bento boxes, reusable water bottles, small ice packs, thermoses, pocket tissues, etc. • Stock up on breakfast and lunch supplies. If possible, plan your menus in advance to cut down on time during the week. • Review schoolwork from the previous year. If it seems like your child needs to brush up on any subjects, and after two months off school he or she surely might, put in some extra study time before the first day. • Prepare homework space. Buy new home supplies and organize the area where your child will be spending time completing assignments after school.

P medical

• Memorize new class numbers and teachers’ names. • Double, triple, and quadruple check your supply list to make sure you have everything your child will need for the first day. • Make sure all summer homework assignments have been completed. • For younger children or those with first day jitters, read a book together the night before about starting school. Popular titles include: Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes; The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn; We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins; and Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney.

P routines

P safety

• Practice the new bedtime routine and morning routine a week or so before school starts.

• Review safety procedures for walking to school or getting on and off the school bus.

• As the first day approaches, limit time spent on electronic devices and increase daily reading time.

• If your child is attending a new school, do a practice run to familiarize him or her with the new surroundings.

• Brainstorm some new ways too ask “how was your day” when kids get home from school. Asking more specific questions will help you understand how well your child is doing in a new class, new school, with new teachers, etc.

For super fun first day of school photo ideas, go to

siparent.com/first-day-photos

• Make sure all medical checkups are up-to-date, including pediatrician, dentist, and optometrist.

The Benefits of Participating in Activities with Your Kids

By Jenny Brown For tons of great activities parents and kids can enjoy together, go to hobbyhelp.com/kids/activities

E

ngaging in meaningful, fun, active, or just plain silly activities with your kids will help to strengthen the bond between you. Kids who spend quality time with their parents tend to communicate more at home, and they’re less likely to develop harmful habits. Kids with involved parents are happier overall. They also have higher self-esteem and are able to regulate their emotions better than kids with absent parents. The benefits of interacting with your children will carry over into adulthood. Kids with present parents get better grades and tend to stay in school longer, opening up more career options. These kids shy away from risky behaviors and activities, such as smoking, engaging in unprotected sex, and criminal acts. Children with engaged parents are typically more social, making it easier to form healthy friendships and relationships.

How to Engage with Your Kids Ask your kids which activities they’re interested in. Instead of planning activities for spring break or summer vacation on your own, ask your children to help you brainstorm. Encourage them to try new things, and welcome their suggestions. Make a list of activities and upcoming events you’re all interested in, and start filling up your calendar. Give each child a copy of the list and calendar, so they can look forward to the next activity or event and mark them off as they go. Let your kids know the time you spend together is important. Stay off your phone, and let older kids know ahead of time that the activity will be a no-phone zone. Don’t force it. If you or your kids don’t enjoy an activity, don’t force it. Have a backup plan just in case the activity is a flop. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Facing your fears will set a great example for your kids. Afraid of snakes? Visit the reptile house at the zoo where glass separates you from your nemesis. Afraid of heights? Try rock climbing or rappelling. Don’t force your children to try activities they’re afraid of. Allowing your kids to make decisions for themselves is empowering. My daughter can’t go in a cave or cavern without hyperventilating, so we only visit

those places when she has other plans. Make passive activities engaging. If you watch a movie together, talk about the characters and plot afterward. Open up the conversation for kids to express their feelings and ask questions. Make it a habit. Rather than planning a jam-packed spring break week, space out activities throughout the year. There’s no bigger letdown than a blank calendar after a fun-filled week. I try to always have something on the books for my family to look forward to. Spread the love. If your kids have friends whose parents are absent, or there are latchkey kids in your neighborhood, ask them to join in the fun (with their parents’ permission). Inviting these kids to play a game, join your field day festivities, or make slime with your family will have a positive impact on everyone, and you’ll be modeling kindness, empathy, and compassion to your kids and their friends. Create your own dinner conversation starters One of the best -- and most frequent -- opportunities to engage as a family is over dinner. Over the years, I’ve learned to get creative when asking my children about their day. Otherwise, I get an automatic “fine” or “okay,” which doesn’t leave much room for discussion. To liven up the conversation at the dinner table, my kids and I decorated an old coffee can and filled it with strips of paper with conversation starters. After everyone draws one, we take turns reading and answering our prompts. Depending on the size of your family, everyone can answer every prompt, or each person can answer only their own. Below are a few examples: • Name two good things and two not-so-good things that happened to you today. • If you could have three wishes granted, what would you wish for? • List three kind words that describe the person to your left, then repeat with the person on your right. (You can also have each person say one kind thing about each person at the table.) • Share three things you are grateful for today. • What are three jobs you think you’d enjoy? • Name three people you’d like to invite to dinner. Why did you choose them? • What is your favorite book, and what do you love about it? • If you could choose your own name, what name would you choose, and why? • What has been the best day of your life so far, and what made it great? • Imagine you can only eat three foods for a week. Which foods would you choose, and why? • If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would it be, and why? • Who inspires you, and why? Although your family’s answers may change each time, it’s fun to answer new questions. Refresh your conversation starters every month or two to keep your dinner conversations new and exciting. A Controlled Bow Hunt... Could It Help Manage Staten Island’s

Exploding

Deer Population? By Michael Reilly NYS Assemblyman, previous District 31 Community Education Council President and former New York City Police Department Lieutenant.

T

he rise in Staten Island’s deer population has caused great concern. It has increased the potential for injuries and death due to deer-vehicle collisions, vegetation destruction, increasing the amount of ticks and cases of Lyme disease, as well as other implications on the environment. Since deer migrated to Staten Island they no longer are susceptible to natural predators, creating an environmental imbalance. When deer are not managed through hunting or their natural predators they often succumb to starvation which can be a long-suffering demise. This can result in deer carcasses and bodies left to decay in the woods and streets across Staten Island. Staten Island’s deer population is now at 2,100, up 9,000 % since 2008. Cities across the country are facing similar concerns over large deer populations in non-traditional areas, where they have no natural predators. Several municipalities have tried sterilization programs, with the mission of cutting reproduction and reducing the deer population over time. New York City has incorporated a sterilization program in an effort to contain the growth in deer population. Unfortunately, sterilization programs alone, like New York City’s, have been inadequate for significantly reducing the number of deer. According to the NYC Parks Department, Staten Island’s current sterilization plan anticipates lowering the deer population by 10 to 30 percent. Several municipalities across New York State have tried similar sterilization programs costing millions of dollars with very little significant impact. Eventually these municipalities have turned to lethal methods like controlled bow

hunting within a few years to manage the increasing deer population in their areas. Cities like Rye, New York and Cincinnati, Ohio are considering or have instituted a controlled bow hunting program that utilizes a lottery selection process, authorizing a limited number of experienced and trained bow hunters to participate. In Cincinnati, the program focuses in Mount Air Park which encompasses 1500 acres. The bow hunting program has proven to help in the effort to control the deer population. In 2016, Cincinnati’s controlled bow hunt resulted in 157 qualified hunters reducing the deer population by 139. Cincinnati’s 10-year program has resulted in a 1,354 reduction in the city’s deer population. Some of Staten Island’s landscape may be conducive to a limited controlled bow hunting season. Fresh Kills Park which encompasses 2200 acres and the Mt. Loretto Unique Area which sits on more than 200 acres, each with high concentrations of deer, could be an ideal compromise. Some may have concerns with potential bow-hunting in Staten Island presenting a danger. Fresh Kills Park and the Mount Loretto Unique Area can fit the criteria for safe bow hunting areas under the state guidelines. There are strict laws and state DEC officers enforce these regulations. According to the latest state statistics, in 2016 there were zero injuries from bow hunting across the entire state. A limited three-week hunting period could be communicated to the public via the news, social media and posting signs to ensure the park land remains safe for hikers and those who love and appreciate our natural treasures. A closed three-week hunting period in these areas could provide a compromise to preserve the eco-system. In December 2017 the NYS Assembly, Senate and Governor Cuomo authorized cities and towns to consider euthanasia as part of their deer management plans. Governor This would allow them to capture and kill the deer with methods aside from traditional hunting. Allowing a select number of experienced and trained bow hunters to participate in a controlled bow hunt on Staten Island could help expedite the reduction in the deer population, potentially saving lives, and the city money. Deer hunters could also donate deer meat to feed local homeless families and individuals through the “Hunters Feed The Hungry” program. What do think of controlled deer hunting on Staten Island? Decisions, Decisions

Selecting the Best After-School Programs

afterschool program guide Page 34

By christine albano Staten Island based writer Christine Albano has fond recollections from the many years of juggling after-school activities from baseball, Girl Scouts, and dance, to violin lessons and football when her kids -- now 21, 17, and 15 -- were younger.

P

arents are faced with so many important decisions when it comes to their children’s well-being -- and choosing the correct after-school activities to excite and engage their kids is one of the many careful, thought-provoking financial and personal commitments they can make. With so many choices available for today’s youngsters -- from dancing school, baseball, and karate to swimming, Scouts, music lessons and more -- there is no shortage of activities, programs, and sports for Staten Island parents from which to choose.

Whether the decision is influenced by the need to broaden their kids’ extra-curricular horizons, promote skill-building or health benefits, or simply as a leisurely hobby or fad explored with classmates or friends, Staten Island parents suggest making the decision that works best with your family’s needs, budget, and schedule. While they have the final say on affordability and eligibility, parents say they do give their kids the option of choosing -- or at least trying out -- any activity that interests them.

Decision Making When Karen Ambrosino and her husband, Ciro, wanted their daughters Gabriella, 10, and Isabella, 6, to try a new after-school activity, they chose flag football and martial Gabriella arts. “Gabby was lacking self confiAmbrosio shows dence because she wasn’t fitting in off a medal at LAST with the girls at dance,” Mrs. AmYEAR’S martial arts brosino of Tottenville explained. So competition they gave flag football a try because they had friends involved in it, while Photo courtesy of Mr. Ambrosino heard good things Karen Ambrosino. about martial arts. “We also wanted them to do activities that involved a lot of activity,” Mrs. Ambrosino said of her daughters who will attend fifth and first grade in September. What started out as a trial experience soon ended up as a permanent solution, she added, calling it the “best decision” they ever made. The family’s schedule includes flag football and karate for both girls, in addition to Girl Scouts twice a month for Isabella, who also squeezes in speech services twice a week as well as CCD. Interest and need, followed by cost and scheduling is what drives the decision-making process in the Lyons family of Castleton Corners. “We have three kids and our budget is tight, so we take advantage of any free programs we find offered that the kids would like,” mom Kathy said. “We also make sure the programs do not overlap and our kids will be able to attend games, practices, and classes because we want to teach them to be committed to what they do”. Their after-school schedule includes a plethora of activities for all three boys -- Jack, almost 32 August 2019 • siparent.com

LIPM 13, Brendan, 11, and Matthew, 4. Both Jack and Brendan play basketball, soccer, baseball, and golf, and attend English and Language Arts and math prep classes, as well as lacrosse camp. Jack also takes comic book drawing classes and TACHS prep classes, while Brendan attends cooking classes, and Matthew takes soccer and swim classes -and may add basketball in the fall. “I like to keep them active to keep them moving and off their phones and away from sitting in front of video games all day,” she added. Juggling Act Sometimes busy and hectic after-school schedules can be grueling, but parents say they rely on everything from sharing the carpool duties with grandparents to scheduling apps. Mrs. Lyons said her husband stays home with the boys and coaches many of their teams, and her in-laws step in to help coach games, drop off or pick up during conflicting schedules, or watch the younger boys until she gets home from work. She said she also turns to the Cozi Family Organizer app to help keep their family’s days in order. With two daughters on a competitive dance team, a son involved in sports, and two full-time work schedules, Ann and Anthony Bilotti of Randall Manor are no strangers to juggling a heavy load of after-school activities for their kids. After trying out other programs, such as Girl Scouts and soccer, her kids gave those up when there were scheduling conflicts and had to be more selective. “I let the kids decide what they are interested in and have them prioritize,” Mrs. Bilotti explained. “My kids would try to do more if time was not an issue,” she added. Lili, 11, and Gina, 9, attend dance classes four to five days a week, play softball in the spring, and attend a cooking class at school, while son Anthony, 7, plays basketball and baseball. “We definitely took into consideration what we could afford to do and if the timing worked with our schedules,” she explained. “We both work, so our days are planned to the minute.” Staying within a budget and avoiding over-scheduling are two important factors that Rozina Vazquez of Travis used in determining her daughters’ time spent after school. “We need to make sure that while we are giving our daughters these experiences, that we stay within our budget,” she explained. Sophia, 9, will be joining her school’s soccer team in the fall after completing the summer clinic, and is interested in continuing a cooking class as part of her after-school activities. Her sister Samara, who is turning 15 next month, plays volleyball, runs track, and is involved in performing arts -- especially in chorus and band. The cost of after-school care covers Sophia’s after-school programs, while an annual athletic fee in high school allows Samara to play as many sports

Scary Movies I Let My Son Watch Scary Movies—and We’re Both Happier

By patti woods Patti Woods is a freelance writer living in Connecticut. She is the author of Lost Restaurants of Fairfield and her work has appeared in several publications.

As with all things when it comes to parenting, choosing when to let your children watch scary movies is up to your discretion. Here’s why one mom let’s her tween son watch scary movies—and how it’s good for both of them.

I

t started with Stranger Things. My husband, my son Henri and I watched the first season together and loved it. I was terrified, but Henri was cool as a cucumber. He’s always loved scary stuff. Even as a toddler, he was never freaked out by gruesome Halloween costumes or macabre movies such as Coraline. There was only one occasion when he woke me up in the middle of the night from a nightmare. He was 4 years old at the time and he dreamed of a skeleton called Masterpiece. His retelling of it scared the bejeezus out of me, but he—having unloaded it all—managed to go right back to bed. When the second season of Stranger Things came out, Henri and a group of friends got together to binge-watch it. I know some other parents gave us the hairy eyeball for allowing our 11-year-old to watch it, and frankly, I also questioned the appropriateness. But then something magical happened. This pack of boys, who normally just played online, suddenly wanted to be like Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Will—which meant riding their bikes to each other’s

houses and going in search of adventures. It made my 1980s inner child sing with happiness. And it also made me realize that some scary things are okay. But then came It, the Stephen King movie. He wanted to see it and I wasn’t so sure. “Please, mom. I promise, it’s not too scary. Dad said it’s okay.” I wasn’t as concerned about the scariness as I was about the violence and language— but I also knew he was already exposed to a lot of that. And honestly, I wanted a night to hang with my increasingly independent son. So, one Saturday night, I relented. My husband went to bed early, leaving Henri and me and a big bowl of popcorn. The previews alone had my heart thumping. “It’s not real, Mom,” he continually reminded me. I wrapped myself tightly in a blanket and white-knuckled it, trying not to scream. How could he be so calm? And then it happened. During the scene when Pennywise the Clown peeks out from the sewer, Henri reached out and grabbed my hand. This was a child who never wanted me to hold his hand—even when he was a little kid crossing the street or walking into

raising kids the first day of school. So, when he tightly squeezed my fingers, Pennywise took a backseat to the utter joy glowing in me. He needed me! My tough tween son actually still could be vulnerable. I won’t go so far as to say he snuggled with me that night, but for two hours, we experienced something together. I’m still not a fan of scary movies, but I’m not against them either. Stranger Things helped him tighten the bonds of his friendships and It gave him a gentle reminder that it’s still okay to need your mom. Now I can’t wait to surprise him with a trip to the local haunted house.

Tips from Common Sense Media For parents of young kids: Choose media with care. Kids under 7 will believe what they see. When picking media, nothing should be more startling than “Boo!” Kids over 5 may like haunted houses, mysteries, and things popping out everywhere, but stick to animation, which helps them realize that it’s fantasy. Be careful with monsters, skeletons, aliens, and zombies. Avoid any dangerous material involving characters near their age. Be prepared for when things do go bump in the night. Kids 2 to 7 respond well to magical remedies and nightly rituals, such as cleaning the monsters out of the closet. Don’t be surprised if your kids suddenly like a little scary stuff. Kids who are 8-to-10 years old can handle being scared for longer periods of time -– in fact, they love it. Bring on the phantoms and ghoulish faces, but continue to choose films without gore or physical harm. For parents of middle school kids: Pushing boundaries may be OK. Some kids of this age are ready to be scared silly. You still should be mindful of blood and gore, but in general skeletons, monsters, and aliens are okay. Even so, stick to movies that have humor mixed in, or those with safe-and-sound endings. Give reassurance when necessary. Other kids still scare easily. Middle school is when scary movies start being a big part of sleepovers and movie outings with friends. Even if your child isn’t ready for the scarier stuff, it can be hard for her to tell that to friends who want to see the latest zombie flick. Let your children know that it’s ok to be scared and to tell their friends they’d rather watch something else. For parents of high school kids: They may be ready for more than you think. Developmentally, teens can handle dramatic and psychological suspense, but kids under 16 still shouldn’t see slasher horrors, especially those that feature kids in dire danger or that have lots of gore. Mind the messages. Many scary movies now pair horrific graphic violence with sexual situations –- not a great combination for kids exploring newfound sexuality. Dig into the vault. If you like scary movies too, try introducing your teens to some of the horror and suspense classics. Just make sure that any younger siblings are already tucked in bed.

Arts and Crafts THE Benefits of CRAFTING for Kids with Special Needs

By NyMetroparents Visit them at nymetroparents.com.

Art therapy brings out creativity, boosts self-esteem, and gives children with special needs a chance to shine. Here are some tips to make crafting with your children successful and fun.

A

rt really helps with self-esteem,” says Nancy Landy, ATR-BC, LCAT, co-director of Westchester Creative Arts Therapy Services. “A lot of children [with special needs] feel like they have very few successes—they’re not doing the things that their typical siblings are doing— and this is a time for them to shine, a time for them to be successful. Because all artwork in art therapy is acceptable!” Doing arts and crafts with your child should not center around creating a masterpiece. Beyond having fun—an absolute goal!— undertaking art projects with your child can take a page out of the art therapy book: “Process over project,” as Pamela Ullmann refers to it. Ullmann, founder of Riverdale, NJ-based Colors of Play and president of the New Jersey American Art Therapy Association, says that all crafts are adaptable to different ages and abilities. “You basically have to know your child,” she says. Two essential bits of advice: Focus more on what your child can do than what she can’t do; and always “let them know what’s next,” advises Ullmann. Beyond that, here are some tips for making craft time not only productive, but enjoyable—for you both.

Here are some tips for doing crafts with children with special needs Eliminate distractions. Set the stage by not choosing a time when a sibling is running around or when your child’s favorite television show is about to come on. “If you’re a working parent,” suggests Ullmann, “do it on a Sunday morning or a Saturday afternoon when everyone’s fresh. Don’t start it and end it when everyone’s cranky and tired.” Offer a choice.. Offer up two or three potential craft projects and let your child choose. He’ll be more invested when he feels in control. Ease into the work. “Let the child play with the materials before jumping into a project,” Ullmann says. “Sometimes it’s just about being with the materials and not feeling pressured to make a finished product.” This approach can be especially helpful for kids who have sensitivities to textures, helping build a tolerance for the materials such as clay or yarn. Offer specific encouragement. Hone in on the details of your child’s project, Ullmann says: “I really like the way you used the blue over there.” And acknowledge effort: “I like the way you’re sticking with it.”

Help, but don’t hover. Before jumping in to assist your child with a task that seems to be challenging, first engage in conversation. Maybe ask how it’s going, or say, “I see you’re having some trouble with that. Maybe I can offer a suggestion that might make it easier.” Helping your child problem-solve instead of just assisting with the task at hand empowers her to become a problemsolver in the future, and helps her gain confidence. Limit materials. Especially for children with limited attention spans, it can be overwhelming if too many materials are spread all over the table. “For some young children who have trouble focusing, you might have projects that are pre-prepared,” Ullmann says. Eliminating a step or two simplifies things. “If you are making paper-bag puppets, for example, a parent can precut some of the shapes, but not all of them, so the kids can still be creative.” Use the “hand over hand” technique. Place your hand over your child’s to help him trace or paint. You serve as a guide and support, and he’s still building fine motor skills. Invite a friend. It’s a good opportunity to have some socialization and peer interaction—and, as Ullmann says, “the more hands on deck—with another parent present—the better!” Show off the work. Kids love showing off what they can do, and sharing with others can be powerful, Ullmann notes, especially for a child who has struggled to make something, or overcome an aversion to texture, perhaps. “A parent can take a picture of a child’s artwork and tell their kid, ‘I think Grandma would love to see what you’ve been working on—let’s send it to her!’ “I have a client who is 25 with cerebral palsy, and painting has really helped her in her everyday life,” Landy says. “She has decided to paint pictures for people who have helped her in some way. It’s become a nice way for her to show her appreciation while at the same time developing her fine motor skills—which in turn has helped her in the kitchen with cooking.” Try this tool when crafting with kids with special needs

Winning Self-Confidence Through Sports A GOOD reason to sign youngsters up for athleticS

By Joe LoVerde A local sportswriter and coach for youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. Read more sports advice at siparent.com/goodsports

When my daughter was 6 years old, she asked me if I could take her to the park and pitch to her. By that age, her two older brothers were already playing Little League, but I never signed up Nicole because, well, I probably didn’t push baseball on “my little girl” the way I had with Joe and Willie. (Lesson learned.)

W

e went to Great Kills Park with a bucket of balls and a small bat, and she proceeded to hit pitch after pitch. When we got home, my wife asked Nicole how she did. “Are you as good as your brothers?” my wife asked. “I’m better,” Nicole said. Sports can do that for a child. While having fun should be the primary reason a child is signed up for sports, no less important are the other potential benefits, such as helping to build self-confidence. Children who attempt to master the skills associated with athletics often discover they can do things they didn’t think they could. When you start at the basic level — the correct technique for kicking a soccer ball, shooting a basketball or swinging a tennis racket, for instance — and the child makes an effort to follow through on what he or she is being taught, there is satisfaction with finally getting it right. The first time she puts the ball in the net, the first time he scores a basket, that first strike on the bowling lane — these are great confidence-builders. The child will want to repeat the thrill that comes with succeeding. Of course, it’s important that the adults — as in coaches and parents — remain positive and impart the proper amount of praise when the child is successful. I’m not talking about the “everyone-gets-a-trophy” kind of praise; I am talking about sincere praise for genuine effort and accomplishment. And it’s important to keep the experience positive so that the child will keep playing and, ultimately, prevailing. Competing against yourself by striving for personal bests is another great way for children

to gain confidence through sports. Getting on base more than once in a baseball or softball game, making a successful pass during a basketball, soccer or hockey game -- anything attempted during practice -- can be a huge boost. The timed sports, such as track and swimming, provide the most clear ways of achieving a personal best. So is golf, where you count the number of strokes it takes to go from tee to hole, or bowling when you shoot your high game or series. Maybe not everyone can hit a softball, but most can run from point A to point B, and working to do it faster each time is the goal. Doing so will raise a child’s self-esteem. Through sports, you also often have a chance to defeat personal challenges: overcoming injuries to get back on the field; conquering a height disadvantage to alter a shot. These are ways children learn they can achieve if they just keep trying, and that it’s okay to fail as long as you learn something from those mistakes. Taking part in a sports program or joining a team also helps a child develop social confidence. Think Scotty Smalls in “The Sandlot.” And when that child gets older and perhaps goes to college, being on a team means friends, a sense of belonging and comfort with new surroundings, leading to confidence in class. Of course, parents and coaches can ruin the child’s confidences with constant criticism and pushing them to be the next LeBron James. Adults need to keep in mind that the children are playing sports mainly for fun. Keep that in perspective and your child will develop confidence from any sport he or she plays.

Cherries: A Sweet Superfruit for Summer Meals

F

rom backyard barbecues and family picnics to a bright addition to seasonal recipes, sweet cherries not only provide a boost of flavor but also pack a punch when it comes to nutrition, helping keep you and your family healthy during busy summer months. Cherries can help reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure as well as relieve stress and gout, and can improve sleep quality. The perfect time to take advantage of the goodness of Northwest-grown sweet cherries is through August. Eat fresh cherries straight out of hand as a snack, bake them into a pie or pair with ice cream for a sweet summertime treat. The rich fruitiness of sweet cherries helps blunt the sharp edge of dried fruit in a quick and easy Cherry Sauce recipe. Low in sugar and versatile, this sauce can be used as a base ingredient for cocktails, a glaze for meats, a spread for sandwiches, a topping for yogurt and more. Add some ginger or orange peel to complement your menu and you may have a new, nutritious summer favorite. Or, for a sweet, simple snack, use cherries to make an appetizer like Cherry Bruschetta.

Cherry Sauce

Ingredients 18 slices (1/2-inch thick) small baguette-style bread 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided 1 1/2 cups pitted Northwest fresh sweet cherries, coarsely chopped 1/4 cup chopped cilantro 1/4 cup diced yellow sweet pepper 2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 teaspoon grated lime peel 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese 1 tablespoon thinly sliced fresh basil

Directions: 1. Heat oven to 350° F. 2. Arrange baguette slices on cookie sheet and toast one side 5 minutes. Turn slices, brush with 1/2 tablespoon olive oil and bake 5 minutes. 3. Combine cherries, cilantro, sweet pepper, green onions, lime juice, lime peel, garlic salt, pepper and remaining olive oil; mix well. 4. Top each baguette with thin slice cheese, 1 tablespoon cherry mixture and sprinkle of basil. Serve warm or cold.

Ingredients 3/4 cup water 3/4 cup maple syrup 4 cups fresh Northwest-grown sweet cherries 4 cups dried cranberries 4 peels (2 inches each) fresh ginger (optional) 3 tablespoons citrus zest (optional) black pepper (optional) fresh herbs (optional) raspberries (optional)

Directions: 1. In medium saucepot, add water, syrup and sweet cherries. Bring to simmer, stirring occasionally and more frequently as sauce begins to form. 2. Add cranberries; continue stirring. Once reduced, remove from heat and add fresh ginger, citrus zest, black pepper, fresh herbs and raspberries, if desired. 3. Cool 30 minutes-1 hour before transferring to wider, shallow pan for speed cooling. 4. Once cooled, store refrigerated in airtight container up to 2 weeks.
