FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Hurricane Fans, Another exciting season of Hurricane Athletics has concluded, one filled with tremendous accomplishments for our student-athletes, coaches and staff, both on and off the field. In this issue of Hurricane Magazine, we look back at the sports memories of 2016-17 through incredible photography. Like me, I am sure that the photos will bring back great memories of a special athletics campaign. Two Hurricanes captured national championships this past year as redshirt freshman David Dinsmore won the men’s diving 10-meter platform title and senior Shakima Wimbley won the women’s 400m indoor track and field crown. Our football team posted a 9-4 record in Mark Richt’s first season returning to Coral Gables, winning its final five games of the season, including a victory over West Virginia in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando. The Hurricanes finished ranked in both season-ending polls for the first time since 2009, and the squad, which returns 18 starters, is looking to carry that momentum into the upcoming season. Both our men’s and women’s basketball teams had outstanding seasons that resulted in NCAA Tournament berths. Our golf team qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row and posted its best finish since 1992. Our women’s track and field team won the ACC Indoor Track and Field title for the second consecutive year. Women’s tennis advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in their 22nd straight appearance. Shakima was the national runner-up in the women’s outdoor 400m race, as was junior diver Briadam Herrera in the men’s 3-meter springboard. Estela Perez-Somarriba advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships, the first UM freshman ever to advance that far. In the classroom, ten Miami teams (men’s cross country, men’s track & field, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, golf, soccer, women’s tennis, women’s track & field and volleyball) were recognized for perfect Academic Progress Report (APR) scores in 2015-16. In addition, our student-athlete community outreach program earned a No. 3 ranking in the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Community Service Competition. Miami was one of four schools this year to have at least one player selected in the NFL, NBA, MLB and WNBA drafts including nine UM players selected in the NFL Draft; more than every school in the country besides Alabama and Michigan. Congratulations to all of our Hurricanes as they pursue their professional sports dreams and their successes demonstrate that we are continuing to Build Champions at The U. Thanks to your generosity, it was another record year for the Hurricane Club, highlighted by all-time marks in annual giving, membership and capital projects. We completed renovations to the Hecht Athletic Center, as well as the men’s and women’s basketball offices at Watsco Center. UM RECORDS SET IN GIVING, MEMBERSHIP, CAPITAL PROJECTS With an unprecedented outpouring of support from University of Miami fans and donors, 2016-17 was a record-setting year for the Hurricane Club highlighted by all-time marks in annual giving, membership and capital projects. The Hurricane Club raised $49 million in cash and commitments in 2016-17, an all-time record and an increase of more than 80 percent from the previous record of $26.5 million, set in 2010-11. “I want to thank all of those who have invested in our students,” Director of Athletics Blake James said. “We are continuing to Build Champions in the classroom, in competition and in life. The generosity of our passionate supporters is invested into enhancing the student-athlete experience and ensuring that we provide our young men and women with the very best resources to be successful.” The $49 million raised was highlighted by three capital projects: the Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility, the Isadore Hecht Athletic Center renovation project and the Basketball Victory Fund. The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility was held in early May at the future site of the building, expected to open in fall of 2018. The Soffer Family’s lead gift of $14 million towards the indoor football facility, announced in fall of 2016, marked the largest single gift in the history of Miami Athletics. The Hecht Athletic Center, which reopened its front doors in May, underwent a $1 million transformation to the outside entrance and interior of the main lobby. Through the Basketball Victory Fund, a $1.7 million renovation project provided upgrades and updates to the men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms, coaches’ offices and branding installations throughout the Watsco Center. Including the Soffers’ pledge towards the indoor facility, there were seven gifts of $1 million or more in 2016-17, another Hurricane Club record. The Hurricane Club’s membership of more than 11,000 members represents an over 100-percent jump from its membership of 5,140 in 2010. In addition, the $14.3 million raised for the Annual Fund represents an increase of 16.2 percent from the previous total of $12.3 million, and an increase of over 52 percent from its 2010 total of $9.3 million. “Without the passion and generosity of our supporters, none of this would have been possible,” Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development Jesse Marks said. “We designed a plan in 2010 based upon a vision of sustaining excellence for our student-athletes in all areas of their experience at UM. Our growth as a philanthropic organization, both locally and nationally, is a testament to all who invest their resources into our program and believe in Building Champions at The U.” 6

The University of Miami men’s basketball team will face the University of Minnesota as part of the 19th annual Big Ten-ACC Challenge, a 14-team event to be played on campus sites in late November. The event – in which each conference hosts seven games – matches all 14 Big Ten teams against all but one ACC member. Network assignments and tip times will be announced at a later date. The Hurricanes are 1-1 against Minnesota, including an 0-1 record under the guidance of Coach Jim Larrañaga. This will be the first matchup between the two squads at Williams Arena. Miami last defeated the Golden Gophers on Dec. 2, 2009, when Miami earned its first victory in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, 73-68. Riding a three game winning-streak, Miami is 5-5 overall in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, with a 1-4 mark on the road and a 4-1 record at home. The Canes have defeated a pair of ranked teams during Larrañaga’s tenure, downing No. 13 Michigan State, 67-59, in 2012 and No. 24 Illinois, 70-61, in 2013. HURRICANES TO HOST SPARTANS IN B1G/ACC CHALLENGE The University of Miami women’s basketball team will take on Michigan State in the 2017 Big Ten/ACC Challenge, as announced on June 28 by the conference office. In a matchup of teams that played in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, the Hurricanes are set to host the Spartans on Nov. 30 at the Watsco Center. Michigan State went 21-12 last year, advancing to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament and earning a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans have made the postseason in 14 of the past 15 years, earning an NCAA Tournament berth in 13 of those seasons and reaching the Sweet 16 on three occasions. Michigan State has also logged 20-plus victories in 13 of the last 14 years, posting 25-plus four times. Miami, coming off a 24-9 campaign, is 5-3 all-time in Big Ten/ACC Challenge games, including 3-2 at home and 5-1 in the past six seasons, with three straight wins. The Hurricanes are 2-2 all-time versus Michigan State, with a 1-1 home record. Miami downed the Spartans, 76-60, in East Lansing, Mich., in the 2011 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Overall, the ACC is 71-51 since the first Challenge in 2007, winning at least six games each season and earning seven Challenge titles. No matter where linebackers Shaquille Quarterman, Michael Pinckney and Zach McCloud go, they are reminded of all the greatness that came before them at the University of Miami. Ray Lewis, Jonathan Vilma, DJ Williams and Jon Beason are just a handful of the recent greats to have dominated at linebacker for the Hurricanes. They are also mentors and motivators for the latest crop of Miami linebackers. “You just can’t come here, especially as a linebacker, and not live up to the guys who played before you,” Quarterman said. “Just walk around our campus and our facility and those guys are everywhere. They’re all over the walls because they did so many great things. That sets expectations for us to do great things and if you don’t, you have to walk around in shame. I refuse to do that and we refuse to do that.” The legacy of great Hurricane linebackers spans decades, dating back to the 1970s when Harold Sears became the first Hurricane linebacker to be named an All-American. Jay Brophy and Maurice Crum were All-Americans that won national championships in the 80s, laying the foundation for an unbelievable stretch of superstars at the position. The Bermuda Triangle of Micheal Barrow, Darrin Smith and Jessie Armstead followed, winning national titles and making highlight-reel plays for the Canes before going on the NFL stardom. Lewis, who is arguably the greatest linebacker in the history of the sport, and Dan Morgan, a Butkus, Nagurski and Bednarik Award winner, continued to elevate the standard at Miami.

“Playing as much as we did last year is not what usually happens, especially in a place like this,” McCloud said. “It was a huge blessing and was an experience that I am very proud of, but we are all not satisfied. We definitely are motivated to get better and improve of what we did as freshmen.” Quarterman led the way in 2016, ranking third among ACC freshmen with 84 tackles and had more tackles for loss (10.0) than any first-year ACC linebacker in nearly a decade. A Freshman All-American, he led the Hurricanes with eight quarterback hurries, added three sacks and scored his first career touchdown on 17-yard fumble return at Georgia Tech. Pinckney racked up 61 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and an interception to earn Freshman All-America recognition by ESPN, while McCloud burst on the scene with a blocked punt in the season opener against Florida A&M and finished the year with 37 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Despite all the success the trio has experienced, they are hungry for more. “You’ve got to remember that we still haven’t really done anything,” Pinckney said. “Even with all the success we had last year, it’s not like we are regarded as the best linebackers in the country. That motivates us to work so we can get to that level. For me, I remember that the projections said I wasn’t even supposed to touch the field last year. That motivates me and I have a chip on my shoulder when I play the game of football.” Quarterman is excited to see how the trio’s encore performance will go in the second season of their Hurricane careers.
Vilma and Williams were anchors on the 2001 team that won the national championship, while Beason was a standout at Miami that went on to become a star in the NFL like so many Hurricanes have.
“As a linebacking unit, I just can’t wait to see us fly around again after the experience we got last year being thrown out in the fire and what we learned this spring to improve our football IQ,” Quarterman said. “I just can’t wait to put it to the test this year and show the world that we are truly meant to be on the field.
“It’s a great legacy if you look back at some of the guys that have played here and what they

and say, ‘That’s the way football is supposed to be played.’ I want the alumni to say, ‘That’s somebody keeping up to the standards of how we play football at Miami.’ I want to be fast, aggressive and always around the ball.” Meeting the standards set by the linebacker legends of the past is something that all of Miami’s linebackers strive to achieve. “Hard-hitting. Fast. Tough. Those are the words that come to mind when I think of Hurricane linebackers and that’s what we try to do when we take the field,” McCloud said. “There is a lot of heart involved in being a Hurricane. This is not for everybody. But for the guys that love it, it’s a blessing and an opportunity to be part of something special that is with you forever.” Quarterman, Pinckney and McCloud have some help as they look to continue their development into the next great Hurricane linebackers. “A lot of those guys come back and tell you what it means to be a Hurricane and to be a linebacker at Miami,” Pinckney said. “I thought I knew what it meant when I committed here, but you really start to understand when you talk to some of the older guys and hear the passion in their voices and see it in their eyes. They have so much pride for what they are a part of and they make sure you take pride in it, too. That is something I try to take with me to the field. I play with passion for myself and my teammates, but also for those guys because they want to see us succeed and be great and I want to do the same for them.” Alumni linebackers like Beason, Vilma, Williams and Lewis have taken the time to mentor the current crop of Hurricanes just like older players did for them when they were at Miami. “It’s huge walking into a room and seeing all the faces of the people you’ve looked up to and seen on TV,” McCloud said. “You hear all the names growing up, but we get to be around these guys and learn from them. I guess it’s like if a musician got to be around Michael Jackson all the time. There is just a special feeling about it. Whenever we get the chance to interact with them and learn from them, it’s a huge deal for us.” “It’s hard to put into words how great it is to have so many guys around that have done so much on the field here and in the NFL and then they want to help you get to that level and be even better,” Quarterman said. “I guess the best way to say it is that it’s special. The linebacker brotherhood at Miami is special. It inspires you to be like them and work to prove that you belong at the University of Miami.” Quarterman, Pinckney and McCloud have a lot of respect and admiration for their predecessors. They are also grateful for being able to learn from their Hurricane heroes. “When I was being recruited, I always said Jon Beason was my favorite linebacker,” Quarterman said. “I’ve had the chance to talk to him on numerous occasions and just his insight on the game and the knowledge that he passes on to me is so valuable. It’s a dream come true because I don’t know that many people get to really talk to their idol and not just talk, but also be mentored on the game and talk Xs and Os. The fact that I have been able to do that has helped make me a better linebacker and it’s because he has taken the time to help me get there.” While Quarterman has always tried to model his game after Beason, Pinckney struggles to pick a favorite. “I can probably come up with a top five,” Pinckney said. “I can’t pick just one guy to be my favorite because we have so many, so I try to take something from each of their games. Ray Lewis is the greatest. Jon Beason just has that hustle about him and he was relentless on every play. That’s how I feel I play sometimes. Then you have DJ Williams, who was so athletic and could do certain things that few people could do. Vilma was a do everything right guy. Every little detail had to be right and he has really helped me with that. All of those guys did so much and have helped me so much.” McCloud’s favorite Hurricane linebackers may come as a surprise to some, but it’s a sign of the bond that Miami linebackers share. In a program that boasts dozens of standouts at the position, McCloud’s favorites are the guys he lines up with every snap. “I appreciate and respect all the greats that came before me, Ray Lewis, Vilma, DJ, Beason and all the rest, but those are my favorites because they’re the guys I am playing with,” McCloud said. “I know we haven’t stepped up to the level of greatness that those older guys are at, but there is something about a brotherhood and when you are on the field with someone and spend so much time with someone, you see them go through their worst pain and they see me go through my worst pain. Grinding it out with them and helping each other along the way, they’ll always be my favorite linebackers because of that.”

THREE HURRICANE LEGENDS NAMED TO THE NFF AND COLLEGE HALL OF FAME BALLOT A trio of legendary Miami Hurricanes are among the 75 players from the Football Bowl Subdivision who have been selected to the official ballot for induction into the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. First-team All-Americans Warren Sapp (1994), Ray Lewis (1995) and Ed Reed (2000 and 2001) have each been chosen for the 2018 national ballot. They will have the opportunity to join the 10 Hurricanes that have been previously selected to the NFF and College Hall of Fame. The announcement of the 2018 Class will be made Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, in Atlanta. The city is serving as the host for the CFP National Championship, which will be played later that day at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Some of the inductees will be on site during the announcement to represent the class and share their thoughts on being elected. The Jan. 8 announcement will be televised live, and specific viewing information will be available as the date draws near. A few inductees will also participate in the pregame festivities and the coin toss before the championship game. Sapp was a consensus All-American in 1994 and was the first Miami player to win the Lombardi Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. During his All-American season in 1994, Sapp had 84 tackles and led the team with 10.5 sacks. Following the regular season, he was one of six finalists invited to the Downtown Athletic Club for the Heisman Trophy presentation. Lewis, who was selected as a First-Team All-American in 1995 by the Associated Press, was a three-year starter for the Hurricanes. He led Miami in tackles during his sophomore and junior seasons, setting consecutive records for solo tackles by a middle linebacker with 91 in 1994 and 95 in 1995. Following his 1995 season, Lewis was a finalist for the Butkus Award. Reed was a two-time consensus All-American for the Hurricanes in 2000 and 2001. He is one of just nine Miami players to earn All-America honors in back-to-back seasons. Reed played a key role in helping the Hurricanes to their fifth national title in 2001. During his career at Miami, Reed set career records for interceptions and interception return yards. Reed’s nine interceptions in 2001 rank as the second-best single-season total in program history. To be eligible for the Hall of Fame ballot, players must have been named a first-team All-America by a major/national selector as recognized and utilized by the NCAA for their consensus All-America teams; played their last year of intercollegiate football at least 10 years prior to nomination; played within the last 50 years and cannot be currently playing professional football. Once nominated for consideration, all player candidates are submitted to one of eight District Screening Committees, which conducts a vote to determine who will appear on the ballot and represent their respective districts. 181 Canes Named to ACC Academic Honor Roll
More than 150 student-athletes from the University of Miami athletics department were named to the 2016-17 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll on July 6.
The ACC Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. The conference recognized a record 4,472 student-athletes for their hard work in the classroom. Davon Reed, who was the recipient of the 2017 ACC Skip Prosser Award, headlined the Hurricanes’ contingent, as he earned his third academic honor roll appearance. Reed, a 6-6, 200-pound senior from Ewing, N.J., graduated in May with a degree in sports administration and double minors in communications and marketing. He also was a three-time All-ACC Academic selection. Soccer player Gracie Lachowecki and football player Austin Pfenninger each earned their fifth ACC Academic Honor Roll award, leading all Miami honorees. Miami was one of 10 ACC institutions, which had at least one student-athlete earn honor roll status for the fifth time. UMSHOF HOLDS SEVENTH ANNUAL CELEBRITY FISHING TOURNAMENT The Habitat for Humanity of the Upper Keys / University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame (UMSHoF) Celebrity Fishing Tournament Presented by Yamaha and Caribee Boat Sales has wrapped its seventh annual tournament. It was held June 23rd and 24th at Founders Park at Mile Marker 87 on the Overseas Highway in Islamorada, Fla. This unique event gives anglers the opportunity to fish alongside some of their favorite Canes All-Stars and mingle with dozens of celebrity participants. The tournament has continued to be a huge success with over 500 participants, making it one of the largest tournaments in the Florida Keys. This year’s tournament was hosted by University of Miami and NFL Hall of Famer and football great, Ted Hendricks. The tournament weekend began Friday evening with a kick-off party, final boat registration, silent auction and captains’ meeting followed on Saturday by a full day of fishing. On Saturday afternoon, while the Offshore Boats weighed their fish and the Inshore Boats turned in their score cards, Centennial Bank provided a BBQ for the participants and spectators.
