The publication constitutes a sort of vademecum catalogue for the joint exhibition Mots et monnaies, organized by the Fondation Martin Bodmer, the KIKPE Foundation and the Benaki Museum at the Bodmer Museum (Cologny, Geneva; November 2012–March 2013). In an original attempt, manuscripts and books are combined with coins, as well as with other artefacts, highlighting the intertwined relation between words and images. The focus is turned on legends, stories, traditions, persons and events which are echoed both on written/ printed material and on numismatic material, in a fashion that shows how the two media resemble, differ and complement each other and how their messages were disseminated in human societies through the ages. This prestigious full colour catalogue contains a lavish photographic essay by photographer L aziz Hamani and is edited by Luc Derycke.

Women’s Work. Is Never Done brings together the twenty most important essays by internationally acclaimed art critic and curator Catherine de Zegher. Together with Gerald McMaster, de Zegher has been appointed artistic director of this year’s 18th Biennale of Sydney. Her essays on female artists, which have now been collected for the first time, cover a period of thirteen years. Over the years de Zegher’s essays launched and consolidated the careers of such artists as Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Ann Veronica Janssens, Eva Hesse and Bracha L. Ettinger. Het beeldend werk van Berlinde De Bruyckere vraagt dwingend om reacties van wie kijkt. Daarom zijn literaire schrijvers bijzonder aangetrokken door haar composities met verwrongen delen van mensen en paarden, die getuigen van verschrikking en troost, van de wrede dood en het sublieme. Ze haalt de lichamen leeg: door de gaten ziet de toeschouwer de donkere binnenwereld, die hem afschrikt en aanlokt tegelijk. In de resonantieruimtes van Berlinde De Bruyckeres werk kunnen schrijvers creatief te werk gaan, niet door over de objecten te schrijven, maar door er creatieve teksten naast te plaatsen. De auteur neemt geen betekenissen van het kunstwerk weg door het uit te leggen, maar voegt er betekenissen aan toe door kunst met kunst te beantwoorden. Die uitdaging neemt Nobelprijsw innaar J.M. Coetzee aan. Berlinde De Bruyckere kiest samen met hem fragmenten uit zijn gepassioneerde en ontregelende romans, die getuigen van grote schoonheid. Zo maken ze een compositie van beeld en woord die de duistere wereld van hun beider werk van binnenuit verlicht.

Victor Servranckx (1897–1965) staat algemeen bekend als een van de eerste abstracte schilders en beeldhouwers in België. Met de tentoonstelling ‘Victor Servranckx. De jaren twintig’ en de bijbehorende catalogus focust Mu.ZEE op het decennium waarin de kunstenaar de beslissende overstap van de figuratie naar de abstractie maakte. Aan de hand van talrijke werken en documentair archiefmateriaal wordt zijn artistieke evolutie geschetst, die via het purisme, het futurisme, de geometrische abstractie en het surrealisme leidde. Voor de eerste maal staan ook Servranckx’ architectuur en designontwerpen in het voetlicht : een weinig bekend, maar niettemin belangrijk facet van zijn oeuvre. In woord en beeld brengt Victor Servranckx. Paul De Vree (1909–1982) betreedt het domein van de avant-gardekunst op het moment dat hij al een rijkgevulde carrière als dichter en criticus achter de rug heeft. Contacten met de schilder Jef Verheyen en de dichter Henri Chopin zorgen ervoor dat hij zich vanaf het einde van de jaren 50 ontpopt tot een verwoed voorvechter van de nieuwe avant-garde in Vlaanderen. Van dan af staat hij continu in contact met zowat alle belangrijke vertegenwoordigers van de internationale concrete, visuele en sonore poëzie. Daarnaast legt hij zich in de jaren 60 ook toe op het promoten van de radicale beeldende kunst. Met De Vree’s archief als sleutelgat op het tijdsgewricht 1960–1980 ontstaat een fascinerend beeld van een internationaal avant-gardenetwerk dat, via actoren als De Vree, ook sporen nalaat in het Belgische kunstlandschap. Het is op deze extreem vruchtbare periode dat ‘Neonlicht’ zich richt.

Michael Fullerton’s work is concerned with how political and historical information is recorded and disseminated, in particular through the medium of the oil painted portrait. Other mediums of communication, such as billboard posters, wall texts and the raw materials used for analogue tape and audio recording are also employed. Fullerton’s choice of subjects range from the overtly political to people of varied social class and unexpected cultural histories. Underpinning F ullerton’s work is an examination of the relationships between people and the forces at play in those relationships, whether that be social relations involving authority or power, or relationship dynamics that work on a more emotional, psychological or aesthetic level.

In this classic epic of the battle between the sexes we meet Jill and John. Jill is the object of desire, John falls in love with Jill. One day John is on his way to see “the scientist”, Jill’s husband. It’s love at first sight, things start to slide: otherwise inconspicious John starts an affair with Jill. On his way to one of their secret rendez-vous John has a bizarre car crash. He survives but will be transformed for ever into The Snowman. He does not have a clear recollection of his past, nor of his affair with Jill. As the Snowman he gradually discovers he can take on properties of other creatures. One day he transmutes into an insectlike personae and the inevitable takes place: he meets Jill again. They recognise each other and, amazingly, Jill explains John that he has killed her. He had to because it was an essential part of the alien transformation. They realise they have only one option for survival: they have to become one. Super heroes as they have become however, the process takes on dimensions of almost cosmic copulation. In the end they merge in The Mental Wagon and take off in time and space seeking new adventures. In a surprising epilogue The Mental Wagon is transformed into a horse, riding the desert of a planet that may well be earth.

Paesaggio is a periodical publication. Each edition comprises a collection of landscapes by different artists, in form of text and without using images. Texts/landscapes may assume different forms: artworks in form of a text, documents, notes, dialogues. The project aims to bear witness to the way contemporary artists relate to landscape today (intended as genre, subject of research, vision/vista, history…), without using images—only words. This issue has been guest-edited by Hans Ulrich Obrist, and includes such artists as Alison Knowles, Qiu Zhije, Jimmie Durham, Giuseppe Penone and Silke Otto-Knapp. The selection of the authors is strictly connected to the 2011 Serpentine Gallery Garden Marathon, the sixth in the Gallery’s Marathon series curated by Obrist. The event explored the concept of the garden. A product of the creative encounter between the man-made and the natural, between order and disorder, the garden can offer productive metaphors for the interactions between human life and time, care, thought or space.

Luciano Fabro (1936–2007) realiseerde tussen 1990 en 2007 zestien kunstwerken in opdracht. Het boek en bijhorende dvd zoomt in op het leven en werk van de Italiaanse kunstenaar, met specifiek aandacht voor de realisaties in opdracht en in het bijzonder zijn laatste realisatie La colonna di Genk. La colonna di Genk illustreert treffend het denk- en creatieproces van Fabro. De documentaire toont, naast biografische fragmenten en the making of, ook de feestelijke inhuldiging van La colonna op 1 mei 2008 op het nieuwe Stadsplein van Genk, tien maanden na de dood van Fabro. Vijf jaar na zijn overlijden documenteren vzw de Nieuwe Opdrachtgevers en de stad Genk de kunstenaar en het totstandkomingproces van het kunstwerk aan de hand van een boek en een dvd met documentaire. Als bijlage bevat het boek een dvd, waarin het verhaal van Luciano Fabro zelf verweven wordt met het realisatietraject van La Colonna di Genk.

Joris Vandemoortel had the idea of working with the structure of a comic book a long time ago; he experimented with a few things but nothing worked so far. Comics were Vandemoortel’s first love: his first drawings, his first stories. It was all a dwelling of fantasies and lack of reality: he ate them as a child. His first publication with MER. Paper Kunsthalle ‘Cilinder’, will not be a real comic book, but the idea is based on the structure of it. It fits perfectly to get Vandemoortel’s work published. The sketches, the colouring, the humour that feels close to the practice: it’s a work in itself and not just a representation of images. You read the images—no need to explain—you’re having a laugh, thinking… don’t understand—as a kid reading the figures and not the lines; it’s all part of it. The artist will print one new cahier of about 48 pages on the occasion of every new project or exhibition. Each cahier has a unique design and cover. Each will be published separately at first; becoming one book, after 10 editions, that will be published as a whole. Every edition is a new adventure having the same basic players, added, transformed. It’s one big playground: like a show.

Kurt Ryslavy’s ‘Flemish Art Assets’ is an arrangement wherein Kurt Ryslavy performs as a businessman, selling Austrian Wine to the public and painting his bookkeeping; i.e. the bills of the sales he is actually doing on the spot. But Ryslavy is also a businessman and a serious artcollector. For the ‘Flemish Art Assets’ project he also invited flemish artists to make a statement about their work(s) within the Ryslavy-collection. Ryslavy asked the artists how they or their gallerists, when selling the works to Ryslavy, viewed him: as a businessman, a collector or as an artist /colleague. On December the 1st, 2012, these specific artworks from the Ryslavy-collection will be exposed and/or projected on the wall of the Emily Harvey Foundation, New York Broadway. For this occasion, 10 contemporary Flemish artists represented in his collection will be asked to perform in New York. Lara Mennes fotografeerde drie leegstaande gebouwen. Ze roept vragen op naar de betekenis van deze ruïnes en wat ze vandaag symboliseren. De naakte architectuur, vergeten voorwerpen… de foto’s tonen wat overblijft. Maar tegelijkertijd wat afwezig is, wat de mensen wél belangrijk genoeg vonden om mee te nemen. Het zijn elementen van weinig belang, slechts sporen van menselijke activiteit, die net omwille van hun suggestieve waarde Mennes’ aandacht opeisen. Voetsporen op stoffige vloeren, versleten tegels, opgekrulde foto’s, eenzame posters aan de muur… iedere bewoner bracht telkens meervoudige betekenislagen aan. Het zijn allemaal stille getuigen van een vervlogen tijd. Als vensters op het verleden, voeren ze ons doorheen de tijd terug tot aan het ontstaan van het gebouw. Lara Mennes’ foto’s zijn stillevens waarin objecten hun fysieke verschijning overstijgen: het worden uitingen van herinneringen.

This book comes out on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition ‘Julião Sarmento, White Nights’, at Serralves Museum, O’Porto, 23.11.2012. Sarmento has a very small, complicated and a bit weird family. In fact he almost had two families: his real biological one (a very mysterious group of people some of whom he hardly knew… others he never even met!…) and also some other people who were kind of Sarmento’s foster family. There are very few photographs, or memories left of both of them. “Bloodline” has all the photographs the artist could find of his real, biological family up to his birth. The existing blood trail up to the artist, so to speak… “Heartline” has all the photographs Sarmento could find of the two people in his foster family. Close to his heart, far from his blood.

This little Polaroid Atlas is pretty much self explanatory: for many years now Sarmento has used Polaroid photographs to work on his pieces, as “crutches” for his paintings, his drawings and other projects. Sometimes as artworks themselves. Other times as portraits of friends or memories of glimpses. The artist looked for all the polaroids he could find in the studio, just lying around or pinned up on walls or wherever… He found 93 of them and organised them in this book. There are no Polaroids left in the studio now!…

The artist’s book ‘The Fields’ is a hermetic book of reference in twelve parts by Belgian artist Toon Van Borm. The book only comprises handwritten parts; which are close to illegible. After printing, the artist will make an intervention on each book. The print-run of this book will be very low. It is intended as a collector’s edition. Het kunstenaarsboek ‘The Fields’ is een hermetisch referentieboek in 12 delen van de Belgische kunstenaar Toon Van Borm. Het bevat enkel handgeschreven delen, die nagenoeg volledig onleesbaar zijn. Na het drukken komt nog een ingreep van de kunstenaar op elk boek. Dit boek wordt gedrukt op een zeer kleine oplage, en wordt een verzamelaarseditie. In het najaar 2012 volgt een tentoonstelling van Toon Van Borm in het Phoebus, Rotterdam.

Heike Langsdorf, Christophe Meierhans en Christoph Ragg vormen al tien jaar samen het Brusselse performancecollectief C&H. Hun laatste werk was een groots opgezet stadsproject, Postcards from the Future, dat van september 2010 tot en met juni 2011 plaatsvond in negen erg verschillende Brusselse wijken. Voor elke wijk werd een portret gemaakt in de vorm van een performance in de publieke ruimte. Elk van die performances werd aangekondigd door een postkaart die vooraf breed in de stad werden verspreid. Bij het maken van deze portretten werkte C&H telkens nauw samen met wijkbewoners. Zo kwamen zij op hun pad Europarlementariërs tegen, theaterdirecteurs, daklozen, marktkramers, sociaal werkers, blinden, ambtenaren, nieuwe Brusselaars, … Het boek vormt een epiloog bij dit stadsproject. Een kunstwerk in de vorm van een tijdschrift over eenzaamheid, dat is C.I.N.V.U (spreek uit: See I envy you). Het begon met een open uitnodiging aan mensen met de vraag om bij te dragen aan het beeld van eenzaamheid middels teksten, beelden, liedjes en steunbetuigingen. Niet bedoeld als pleidooi voor of tegen eenzaamheid, maar eerder om een idee te krijgen van wat eenzaamheid ons kan laten zien. De vorm van het tijdschrift zelf draagt hier ook aan bij. Het laat naast de actualiteit ook onze vergankelijk heid zien; een bij elkaar geniet hoopje papier dat inspeelt op ons intrinsiek verlangen. Echt opmerkelijk wordt het tijdschrift pas door de talloze bijdragen die na het plaatsen van de oproep binnen kwamen. Kunstenaars, fotografen, schr ijvers, musici en schoonmakers; bij eenzaamheid leken mensen als vanzelfsprekend te begrijpen waar het om gaat. Sterker nog, de kloof van onbegrip die zo kenmerkend is voor eenzaamheid leek ineens overbrugbaar. Niet eerder was er zo sterk de behoefte om eenzaamheid met iedereen te delen.

Graphology considers the range of graphic devices, used by artists working across the disciplines of film, photography, cinema and sculpture, to mediate direct experience. The scope of the exhibition reaches back to the beginning of the 20th century and includes artists who translate human agency into different forms of systematised representation, between the trace and the sign, between writing and drawing, between automatism and automation. Both exhibition and book renew questions about medium-specificity through the combination of works from very different eras and created by various technologies. The featured artworks and essays investigate the human hand as a living seismograph of inner life, yet concurrently address the ‘mechanical unconscious of the machine’ which imposes itself on the human eye. The book is a collaboration between M HKA (Antwerp), HoGent/KASK (Ghent) and Drawing Room (London). De voorbije jaren werkte Ludwig Vandevelde (°1957) aan een reeks sculpturen rond het historisch-religieuze thema van de ‘Pietà’.
