It was in November 2006 we introduced MART in Europe for the first time through MIDEST exhibition at Nord Villepinte, Paris, France.MIDEST, one of the leading international subcontracting shows was organized by Reed Expositions, and the Indian operations were handled by Arun Kumar Rai of Indo French Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to Arun, we were able to foster an alliance with and also an opportunity to take the Indian products overseas through MART. At MIDEST like in any other international show all major manufacturing countries had their pavilions – Germany (with some states having separate pavilions), China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, UK to name a few showcasing the strength the country

possesses in offering the best manufacturing solutions to the world. These pavilions showed the seriousness and determination each Government had to promote its respective economy. But, which attracted me the most was of Pakistan. Much to my amazement, they had a decent pavilion with a good reception desk, where a senior government official inviting all the visitors to their pavilion and I was literally impressed with the energy and vibrancies of the young officer in charge. Now, at MIDEST 2006 because of the hard work and personal effort of Arun, he was able to bring almost fifteen manufacturers, bringing them to a single platform. With the Indian manufacturers mostly from Gujarat and from the other parts of the country who came to test their luck at European market, Arun was also successful to get a stall from EEPC – not more than a junket for the officials present. The end result, some of the individual companies were able to get orders, but the lack of a combined pitching resulted in not gaining much for India. With the natural growth we were making in the economic front, as one of the biggest consumer markets in the world, a lot of global manufacturers are making India a manufacturing destination for the last two decades. The much needed inspiration was missing from the Government, which was addressed by our Prime within just 40 days he is getting the mission launched, “MAKE IN INDIA, SELL ANYWHERE”. On 25th September 2014 the PM will be launching “MAKE IN INDIA” at a mega function that will be attended by about a thousand global and domestic business leaders, along with simultaneous launches planned at different metros in India as well as at some international venues. According to officials several global

Assuring fresh investments from Japan and China, Modi is surely taking strong steps to reverse the economic growth we were missing for the last couple of years, and already the market is responding positively. Why this not happened earlier? Is it just a Modi magic? Will Modi minus BJP government be as effective as it is today? A country of 120 Crore people doesn’t have enough leaders who can visualize our growth and drive the nation towards prosperity? I don’t believe a strong country like India should look upon a single individual. There must be a collective effort. What we must learn from Modi is to get inspired to think about our country, than just selfishly looking towards personal gains. We Indians will be only successful when thousands of Modis are created to lead this country, and my friends, along with me one among those people are you. September 2014

in Indian Manufacturing Scenario

The Industrial electronic plays a pivotal function in the manufacturing sectors of a nation. From last two decades it has undergone a dramatic change from a mere labor-intensive set of mechanical processes (traditional manufacturing) to a sophisticated set of Information Technology based processes. As per the recent trends the rapid transformation and growth in automobile industries as well as the sophistication and efficiency in the areas of medical and consumer market are the results of industrial electronics. Let us look at the unbelievable growth of these specific areas in the recent past.

Dependency on industrial electronics is increasing with the marvelous advancement of the technologies. One most important reason for this wonderful transformation that cannot be put aside is the peoples’ desire for seamless technology in their day to day life. When it comes to automobile industry, especially with reference to Indian scenario, the Indian automobile industry has emerged as the seventh largest in the world and is witnessing a phase of rapid transformation and growth, mainly driven by stable economic growth and infrastructure development. But in global scenario, the industry has only one agenda to live up to the expectations of the customers either in terms of comfort, fuel efficiency, luxury or security. According to MIT researcher Bryan Reimer, the car of the near future will sense about your biology. Auto makers are researching technology that could feed your heart rate, blood pressure and other biometric

responses into the car’s computers, the better to determine when you’re drowsy or overwhelmed with distracting media. A number of big car manufacturers are accelerating research into equipping vehicles with socalled biometric sensors that would keep tabs on a driver’s vital health signs, including pulse, breathing and “skin conductance”. When that information is fed into the computers that manage the safety systems of a car, it could enable a vehicle to better react to whatever challenges the road and traffic dish out. Already, some Lexus models use in-cabin cameras and some Mercedes-Benz vehicles have steering sensors to detect drowsy-driving behavior. The cars sound a warning beep or flash a coffee-cup icon to suggest that it’s time for a break. Luxury brands are promoting these accidentavoidance technologies as examples of what sets their expensive vehicles apart from cheaper, mainstream models. The Mercedes system, called Attention Assist, comes as standard equipment in a wide

range of its vehicles, from the smaller C-class sedans to the more opulent and high-tech, S-class models. Sports car maker Ferrari SpA is using the technology that would embed wireless electrodes in a car seat’s headrest to monitor driver’s brain waves for stress as the pilot machines capable of roaring up to 200 miles per hour. Depending on what the sensors detect, the car might try to mitigate the driver’s risk by cutting power to the motor or automatically stabilizing the vehicle. According to Jeff Greenberg, a senior technical leader involved with the Ford research, “the broad goal is to minimize driver distraction and stress. This may involve keeping people engaged and alert on a boring drive to work or helping them stay focused in more difficult driving moments”. Ford and other companies to test how biometric sensors could be used both to guide the design of vehicles to make them easier to operate and as onboard systems to help people drive more safely. Recently, BMW showed the public its “highly autonomous driving” demo during CES 2014, in which the car takes control of the wheel using various sensors and actuators. Audi has their own self driving system called “Piloted Driving” which can steer to follow lanes and maintain distance with nearby vehicles controlling the pedals, assisted by light detection and ranging. The advancements in technology also revolutionized the design of medical equipment both in terms of sophistication and efficiency. systems that work seamlessly. So, today’s scenario is that the medical devices are shrinking in size because semiconductor companies are integrating more capabilities in embedded processors that result in designs with less hardware and

From the legacy of the First Indian made Transformer Professor Manindra Nath Basu Ray, eminent Applied Physicist, after his retirement from Department of Applied Physics, Calcutta University started his entrepreneurship in manufacturing special type of Transformers and equipments mainly for Research & Academic Institutions and founded Neo Tele-Tronix Pvt Ltd (NTPL), in the year 1975 at a rented garage in Kolkata. Today this well established organization is running successfully through his son Mr. Arijit Basuray and exporting its products making its footprint across the global. The NTPL team revisits the memories of its thirty eight year success story to the readers of MART.

Neo Tele-Tronix Pvt Ltd, known as NTPL, is one of the leading manufacturers of Electrical and Electronic test equipments in India. Not only in India the products of NTPL are well accepted in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE, Pakistan, Turkey, South Africa, Peru etc. The first production began in the year 1976. Since then NTPL has manufactured different types of Test and Measuring Equipments for Industries, Power sectors, Academic Institutions. But the journey was not the same always. After his retirement when Mr. M N Ray found NTPL, financially it was not so strong. “Our forefathers came to

Kolkata from East Bengal during partition and evidently we needed to start from zero” said Mr. Arijit Basuray, Managing Director and the current driving force of NTPL. “Our ancestors were mostly into the teaching profession, the lowest paid profession at that time, we didn’t have any experience which is the most important, after finance, for business”, he added. But the aspiration to do something for the country helped to cross all the hurdles and had shown the right way to the desire. In the year 1985 NTPL got the first order to export to South Africa through GEC. This created a buzz to the

Manindra Nath Basu Ray ((1906-1992) Better known as M N Ray was a student of the 1st batch of Applied Physics in Calcutta University. The course of Applied Physics was specially designed to encourage innovative engineering manufacture in technically incompetent India. In those days as products like test tubes, stands etc. also needed to import. Acharyya Prafulla Chandra Ray, Prof. Mohanti, Prof. P N Ghosh inspired him a lot to manufacture something new. The first transformer made by M N Ray helped Prof. S K Mitra at his work regarding upper atmosphere. The eminent physicist Satyendra Nath Bose also helped Mr. Ray by translating some part of German Books and articles. After this very successful journey M N Ray made the first Indian Transformer factory with his two friends at Beleghata khalpad, Kolkata. But unfortunately the embezzlement of 1946 stopped their production as well as dream. He joined

In the mean time, when people could not even know about the need of transformer in X-ray machine, he had designed X-ray transformer for the first time in India. After a few years, he helped the department of X-ray Crystallography at Rajabazar Science College. His retirement stimulated him to wave a cherished aspiration about starting an academy with industry and institute amalgamation to help the students to learn theoretically as well as practically. That ambitious project never came to reality for many reasons but in the year 1975 he founded his own company, Neo Tele-Tronix Pvt Ltd and started his entrepreneurship in a rented garage at Bijoygarh before it was shifted to its present location at Rajpur. This company, NTPL, started manufacturing special type of Transformers & Equipments mainly for the Research and Academic Institutions. But unfortunately in the year 1992 this mastermind had left NTPL and conveyed his desires and inspirations to his sons Abhijit Basu Ray and Arijit Basuray. Today this company is successfully achieving 38 years and fulfilling the aspiration of the founder under the leadership of Arijit Basuray.

I am here from last 19 years. Manufacturing Standardized products does not require that much effort but the customized jobs needed very much attention and matured engineering ability from making the scope, the specification to the manufacturing and final testing. We are now trying to form a working group so that the skill and engineering learnt by the younger team can be imparted in the regular manufactured items so that the quality of existing standard products are further improved.

NTPL from the legacy of M N Ray? After completing M Sc (Physics), officially in 1979, I joined a project on Power Electronics, sponsored by Electronics Commission, Government Of India in Science College, Calcutta University and was remain associated for four years and in 1983 I joined NTPL. But, I was associated with NTPL from the manufacturing of the first transformer and did the wiring of first control panel manufactured by NTPL. I always felt, it is very challenging to make substitutes of imports.

I am optimistic about future of “India Engineering” and manufacturing. NTPL though a small organization struggling with a spirit for improvement of Engineering ability will surely be able to influence future generation to be in the business of manufacturing with passion. We through our vast experience have understood that NTPL has acquired a rare ability to train wide range of people starting from people those who don’t have any formal education to student who have completed their master degree. We want to utilize this ability to provide regular and systematic training to the young generation. We are planning to establish an Industrial training wing within our company with an expectation that HRD of Government of India or Government of West Bengal will come forward to help us in this regard.

What is your expectation from the government?

Starting from 2008 every year we are targeting to achieve something new. Next NTPL is focusing on developing some diagnostic equipment which can check the condition of the equipment or component under concern. In these days condition monitoring of electrical equipment are becoming mandatory. Secondly we are concentrating more on development and improvement of Automatic test equipment like Automated oil test set, Load cycle tester, Heat Run Tester,

Perception of Quality QUALITY, the moment one hears about it, it sends shivers down everybody’s spine. Why is it so? On close examination it reveals that we are simply unable to meet our ever-changing customer’s expectations. It’s an irony that on one hand we wish to add more customers& retain them but not able to meet their expectations. Gorur Sridhar It is true that Quality cannot be 100% but tending towards that is striving for perfection. Any of the certifications or regulations like ISO9000, AS9100, MIL, FDA, FMVSS, CMMI, 6 Sigma etc. are only the vehicles helping to drive towards achieving that goal. The moment we try understand those, the bigger question that arises is: ‘How do we weigh Quality’? ‘How do we quantify Quality’? In order to address the above, let us now try to answer the question: ‘How do we identify ourselves in the value chain of the product’? Is Quality paramount in some specific type of industry or is it supposed to be given equal importance in all domains? Do we perceive that Quality is important in Defense & belittle other domains viz. Aerospace, Industrial, Marine, Automotive, Medical etc. or do we treat them equally? Let us examine the cost of some of the failures associated with the ‘Poor Quality’ in the above mentioned domains: Aerospace and/ or Space & defense: • NASA used the metric system while Lockheed Martin used the English system when building a satellite Cost of the lost orbiter: $125

The standards, requirements, specifications etc. would vary among domains but the underlining factor is that Quality is inseparable.

Irrespective of the domains “Quality always remains as Quality” and can never be undermined. Every industry has its own way of handling quality issues and addressing them appropriately and is not a ‘one fit all’ solution. The cycle time of qualifying a part may take relatively a longer time in an Aerospace industry since it has to undergo a greater number of cycles compared to its counterpart in an Automotive industry. Similarly marine have their own very stringent quality norms and have to go through a battery of approvals and this in no way makes it superior to other industries. In some cases the cost of failure and the insurance costs dictate the quality levels. As a matter of fact most of the quality systems originated from the Japanese Automotive industry and deployed horizontally across the other countries &domains.

I would simply put it this way: “Working to your conscience and discipline in following a procedure is Quality”. The questions that would still remain unanswered are: ‘What is it that we can compromise on’? ‘Where can we draw a line to differentiate between acceptable, desirable & nonnegotiable’? ‘Is deploying those extra resources in terms of manpower and time justified’? Focus on Environment Managing a SME in India - Part 20 As a continuation of our regular column, we will discuss on few more points to manage SME’s better in India and in this issue we will be talking on Focus on Environment. The key challenge of today is to find a tradeoff between development and environment. In this article, we dwell upon not much on municipal wastes but on industrial wastes which are more challenging and needs more attention to tackle. P S Satish 33. Focus on Environment The key challenge of today is to find a tradeoff between development and environment. They are two sides of the same coin. The growth or development comes at hidden cost of environment. As the population goes up, the issue of balance also becomes complicated. This is where we are talking of sustainable growth. That is of growth with least impact on Environment. In this sustainable growth, the Government no doubt has a role to play in terms of key policies and effective implementation. We as individuals and as responsible for running industries have a bigger role and responsibility to protect this earth for future generations. One of key issues of growing cities in India is managing municipal wastes. All of us are aware of the situation in Bangalore. The corporation is alleged that wastes are dumped in a land in barren land without proper method of processing leading to diseases and harming environment. The Government at last is trying to find a solution with the intervention of high court for speedy implementation of processing wastes. The citizens should be educated to take the responsibility in not throwing wastes in a non-designated

place, segregating wastes according to types etc. In this article, we dwell upon not much on municipal wastes but on industrial wastes which are more challenging and needs more attention to tackle. Two years back a survey was made on quality of ground water in a residential area close to major industrial park Peenya, Bangalore. This park houses thousands of industries especially MSMEs. The samples of water were found to have chromium (IV) at level of 50 times higher than what is permissible. It was clear that such chemicals have come from nearby industries where contaminated water is not treated and was allowed to flow into soil. Chromium is carcinogenic and will cause skin problem and health related issues. This is one of example of plenty, we see around in Industries. What owners and CEOs can do about this? Do they have moral responsibility for taking care of earth which is used for the growth? What is the role of government to minimize attack on environment? Though deterioration of environment cannot be totally stopped, we can make an effort to reduce the rate of deterioration. I try to give some tips which can be followed by MSMEs as a part of their social and moral responsibility towards mother

Earth: •Almost 1/3 of energy consumption is by the industries. So there is a need to achieve energy efficiency. Let this be a factor while selecting the equipment. Poorly maintained machines consume more energy. Focus on regular maintenance. • Care about handling municipal wastes generated in the company like wet-wastes, dry wastes, plastic covers, packing materials etc. Ensure that you have a mechanism for segregation of these wastes and pass to collection center of corporation. If collection is there have appropriate method for disposal. • Take special care for disposal of electronic wastes. If possible return the used equipment to manufacturers who have the responsibility as per the law to take care of disposal at the end of life. • Try to have an EMS (Environment Management System) with a certification of ISO14001. Apart from Employees feeling proud for contributing towards environment protection, this also helps in improved compliance, better public imageand trust by Customer. • Making the product right at first time saves rework

and there by contributes to environment protection. • Employees tend to feel that EMS is a bureaucracy or expensive. They may resist with fear of more responsibilities. To overcome this it is important to train or explain them why EMS is required and how it will benefit the organization. • While selecting a consultant to improve environment system in the company, ensure his experience is in similar product you have and also have on-hand experience in small scale companies. He should not work in isolation but need to involve employees in the process. • Be clear of the relevant laws and regulations related to environment protection applicable to your company and have all relevant copies as a reckoner. • Saving electricity by using energy star rated products will help in reduction of global warming. Try the options where solar lights can be used to the maximum. Generating solar energy for heating water and generating electricity if possible is the best option. Consider using energy saving lightings like CFL, LED. Develop a culture where lights, fans and air-conditioners are switched off immediately when not in use. September 2014


• Ineffective air conditioning and refrigeration can drain lot of energy. Ensure that insulation of ducts is properly maintained; filters kept clean and are replaced regularly. Have thermostats in air-conditioners to avoid overcooling. Check for airleakages in the room to lessen burden on air-conditioning. There are insulated paints available in the market which can be used on inside/ outside walls to reduce loss of heat transfer. • Check seals of standalone refrigerators and freezers are checked for any leak and replace appropriately. Locate these units away from any heat source. • Ensure that all computers are fitted with temporary suspend power-down function that automatically switches to energy saving when not in use for a long time. When buying computer, take one with flat screen and with low energy consumption. • Switch the printer just before taking print and switch off immediately when the job is done. • Switch off photocopy machines after taking copies. Discourage to take unnecessary copies and encourage using soft copies through email. If copies are required, encourage to take copy on both sides of sheet. Soiled papers can be used for scribbling notes. • Take extra care to see that oil leakages from machines are arrested. Sensitize operators on this. Spillage on ground ultimately contaminates ground water. • Small scale companies cannot afford many times to have effluent treatment facilities for water. In such cases, you need to find ways for least contamination and innovative low cost ways for September 2014

• There will be issues to dispose small quantities of contaminated oil (say rust preventive oil) and in such cases, you should have a mechanism for collection over a period and handover to agencies identified by pollution board for treatment.

• By reducing inventory, you would be actually contributing to environment since a portion of this invariably ends up as scrap.

• If boiler is more than 15 years, consider replacing. New type of boilers are more energy efficient and old ones consume more energy. • Water is going to be a scarce commodity in the years to come. Create awareness on water consumption in wash basins and toilets. Check taps and pipes for any leakage. • As far as possible, re-use packing materials. Minimize product packing if appropriate. • Use stationery and visiting cards with recycled papers. It may be expensive unless less bleaching is accepted.

• Involve employees in the drive to take care of environment. The government including the pollution boards has a greater responsibility in educating impact of environment in small scale industries by individual visit to them and handhold to implement measures. Unlike bigger companies, small scale has limited access to knowledge and skill. The Government can also think of door to door collection say of used oils with nominal price so that the letting down to drain is avoided by the companies. In a recent conversation with my partner in Japan, I was told of a

machine to convert used cooking oil to useable oil. They collect this from a collection point where users’ handover to a collection point. I started thinking on what we do in household and hotel industries do with used cooking oil. I didn’t find a definite answer. Imagine tonnes of oil in India finding its route to gutter in some way. We have a long way to go and this is the time if not late to start thinking on protecting only Earth we have for the next generation. Let us spread awareness in the Industries and take our portion responsibility. I will continue the series of article in the next issue. The Power of Praise How Leaders can create a compelling work environment in which people feel important and appreciated Remember a time when someone told you something about yourself in a praising manner? It was great, wasn’t it? You probably liked that person more after they praised you, didn’t you? Now I am not talking about praising people for the sake of praising people. I am talking about honestly looking for and praising positive character traits and action of others around you. In my experience of observing great leaders from different companies, background and experiences, a key behaviour is what differentiates and makes them a ‘successful leader’. Successful leaders are people who have mastered the art of building others up. Something that is powerful. Something that is impactful. Something that can help turn an indifferent team member of his into a passionate player. One of the ways leaders build their people up is praise them. They realise that there is power in praising team-members. They don’t hold off until annual performance reviews to praise stellar employees. A simple “thank you” here and there would boost efficiency and even help their business make more money. According to new research, companies that excel at employee recognition are 12

times more likely to generate strong business results than those that do not.In companies focused on rewarding their employees - engagement, productivity and customer service were about 14% better than in those that skimp on recognition, the study found. The study was conducted by advisory services firm Bersin& Associates President and CEO Josh Bersin wrote recently that “high-recognition culture” companies share three common traits: First, they build focused recognition programs which collect “thank you’s” and “feedback” from peers, not just managers. Second, they directly tie recognition to business goals and company values, so recognition reinforces strategy. Third, they give employees open and transparent access to the program – so everyone can see who is being recognized and anyone can recognize another.

To appreciate is a mental ability of leaders who have a knack for reframing situations and have a keen eye for spotting what’s valuable and positive in a situation or in their people. And these leaders go one step further; they are able to envision how the positive aspects can be used to create a better future. Combining the two in an organization, i.e. a leader with appreciative intelligence using an appreciative inquiry approach, constitutes a powerful force indeed for effecting positive change and inspiring others to give the very best they have to offer. Imagine if all leaders in an organization proactively and mindfully practiced appreciative intelligence. Imagine the profound, healthy impact that this would have on an organization’s culture. Such a culture would fuel employees’ motivation. Surveys of what employees want consistently rank “appreciation for work well done” high up on the motivation index – well above “good remuneration”. Ironically, managers often place monetary rewards above appreciation in their responses

of what employees want. Other surveys show that one of the reasons employees leave companies is because of lack of praise and recognition by their managers. Leaders often talk of the challenge of building trust in their organization. Adele B. Lynn’s study on trust in the workplace shows that 54% of those polled would work for less remuneration if the following trust building factors were present: - Importance: giving people a sense of importance about who they are and about their role in the organization; - Touch: feeling that the leader genuinely cares about them, feeling a connection with the leader; - Gratitude: being appreciated for their contributions and sacrifices; receiving genuine gratitude; - Fairness: knowing that leaders ensure equal and fair distribution of rewards. Withholding praise, however, is a pattern of behaviour that September 2014


leaders need to unlearn if they want to bring the best out in their people. Leaders need to get over the embarrassment that grips them when they have to praise a team-member. Don’t underestimate praise. As a leader, you probably don’t know how much your word of praise means to a team member. The benefits for them, for your team, and for your company are endless. Here are some pointers for leaders practicing this important skill: Be specific - Acknowledging the excellent way in which a particular situation was handled is an excellent example. Identify areas of strength and acknowledge your team-member. Document this achievement and put it in their quarterly/annual reviews. Team members will always be happy to review once again a major accomplishment.

Be Present - Praise has always an expiry date. Providing positive feedback as soon as things happen is a powerful tool to encourage them to happen again. Don’t delay its expression or wait until performance review time when you see something that is worthy of praising, do so promptly after the event. Make Eye contact and SmileLook at them in the eye and smile when you are praising them specifically. It positively impacts you and the team member making it genuine and honest. It gets all of the focus on what you’re saying. Remind them of their accomplishment - Not many of us remember the perfunctory “job well done”, but we all would remember why it is told. Praise does not have to be elaborate though. It just needs to have a genuine reason. Remind your team-members

of what they have and can accomplish. Remind them of what they did “back then”. They can do it again. Encourage them. There is Chinese quote that says, “A bit of perfume always clings to the hand that gives roses.” As leaders, when we make people feel great about them-selves, paradoxically we elevate ourselves to greatness as well. What is the Objective of Training? Often, it is said, that the objective of training is the development of skills or knowledge. At Pratik Management we hold a different view. According to us, the true and meaningful objective of Training is “changed behaviour”. Hemendra K Verma What is the use of my knowing something new, be it a new fact or new methodology/ new process of doing things or a new behaviour that one should adopt or a new way of looking at some existing facts/ situations and then continue to behave in exactly the same way, as I used to, prior to the training? What is the use of my remaining the way I was, despite the inputs I received in the training? I might as well have not attended the training. It clearly means that the training has not made any difference, even though I may have accumulated a lot of new and “useful” knowledge. If the above formulation is accepted as valid, then it suggests that trainers should focus less on the volume of data, articles and course material they throw at their participants and more on

whether they can strike a chord with the “thought -process” of their participants to induce “change in behaviour”. This call for giving more time for training, not less, so that every participant can be individually spoken to, each doubt raised is freely discussed and debated before being decided upon and thus the desired change is induced by persuasion, not diktat. It also means not having too many “different” topics crammed into one training session -- the faculty cannot do justice to it and the participants find it impossible to absorb so many new ideas and concepts. So while the HR department can safely tick its box on “this topic also covered” learning hardly happens, forget any changed. Further, this acceptance of the “objective of training” automatically suggests how

“training effectiveness” should be measured – viz., by measuring or observing the change in behaviour of the participants, in the desired direction, after some reasonable interval has elapsed after the conclusion of the training programme. I would like to add that while I have used the phrase “changed behaviour”, the context in which I am saying this also envelops “changed attitude” e.g. be it attitude towards safety practices, attitude towards punctuality and timeliness, attitude towards customer, attitude towards irate customers, attitude towards irritating customers, attitude towards irresponsible customers, attitude towards irascible customers and suchlike. (Also read, by substituting customers with vendors, colleagues, bosses and subordinates!) The above pre-supposes, which unfortunately often does not happen, that after a participant returns from training there is a structured “enquiry into” and “follow-up of” their learning by the concerned person(s) in their organisation. What does this follow-up mean? It means that on return, someone (maybe his boss or the HR Head) invites him for a discussion and asks him the following questions: I. How was your training? II. Was there anything new you learnt? III. How do you see the learning helping you, personally? IV. Can some of your learning be applied in your department or elsewhere in the organisation? V. Is there any help you want

as to how many time have they, sincerely, held the above discussion and actually supported the participant of a recently concluded training programme to implement his/ her learning. The unfortunate truth is that when people return from training, the most common response is “Oh! So you are back? Good, we have so much work pending. Will you quickly attend to a, b or c and get back to me? We are already way behind because you were away on training!” The result is that the participant has hardly any time to reflect on his/her learning, forget her trying to actually implement it. Even more tragic is that he/she gets a clear message that what she has learnt or un-learnt at the training programme is of no or little interest to his boss or the organisation and he/she should not spend too much time on

For example, I learn about how to “operate a fire extinguisher” but since I do not really care for safety, I store a lot of goods and material in front of the fire extinguisher so that in times of need it is not easily accessible, sometimes not even visible! Hence, I need to fundamentally change my “attitude to safety” before I can put my knowledge of safety to good use.

The problems on which the students work matures into a useful product or a process or a business model. Innovations tend to be realized. This kind of practice is certainly beneficial to the student community, to the institution, to the Industry and the nation as a whole. As industries are growing students get more opportunities to develop knowledge. But the major portion of students do not take internship seriously and do it just to score marks and eventually failing the major purpose. What is your opinion about it? The problem of failure to realize the objectives is not the fault of the system of internship. It is the fault of the institutes not to put in place a robust monitoring mechanism. It is the absence of this kind of monitoring and lack of trained faculty or the absence of management control that results in students not taking up the internship seriously. Increasing number of industries does not necessarily increase the number of internships. Milling in a new dimension Protective systems for the machine giant The name WaldrichSiegen Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH is known all over the world for producing large, high-precision gantry milling machines. Today gantry milling machines from WaldrichSiegen are at the heart of production plants wherever sophisticated workpieces are machined with highest precision. Telescopic covers from TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP are integrated into the machines from WaldrichSiegen to provide reliable protection for the cables and guideways.

The product portfolio from WaldrichSiegen comprises gantry milling machines as well as large machine tools for the areas of grinding, texturing and turning. Large machine tools manufactured by the company are supplied to many market leaders in China, e.g. to Dongfang. “There has been a partnership between WaldrichSiegen and Dongfang Electric and its

subsidiary Dongfang Electric (Guangzhou) Heavy Machinery for many years,” confirms Ralf Tschersche, Product Manager for Milling Machines at WaldrichSiegen. The Chinese company Dongfang from the Sichuan province already purchased three horizontal turning lathes in recent years. In 2012 they then placed an order for a gantry milling machine: Dongfang Electric decided to buy the latest milling machine ProfiMill 8500/120-G for the factory in Guangzhou. It is to be used for the manufacturing of a variety of different power plant components.

The order is for the largest gantry milling machine from the ProfiMill range that has ever been built by WaldrichSiegen: The distance between the two uprights is 8.5 meters, the clearance height is 7.5 meters. The milling and drilling unit at the heart of the system features an impressive 3.5 m travel length in the Z-axis and 120 kW power on the tool. “Especially for large dimensions, the gantry version provides the advantage of a clearly smaller footprint,” explains Ralf Tschersche. WaldrichSiegen contacted the solution provider TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP with which they have had a close business partnership for many decades. Horizontal and vertical guideways, as well as the crossrail of the ProfiMill are equipped with telescopic covers from TSUBAKI KABELSCHLEPP (see box “Technical figures”). Travel lengths of up to 23 meters and travel speeds of up to 20 m/min have to be taken into account. Rapid Pick & Place for loads up to 5 kg from Schunk The linear directly driven Pick & Place units of the PPU-E series from SCHUNK are the fastest pick & place units on the market. The largest size PPU-E 50, is an expert for dynamic handling of medium-weight masses up to 5 kg. For a complete cycle with a 280 mm horizontal and 150 mm vertical stroke the unit has a cycle time of 0.98 seconds with a tooling mass of 1,5 kg and 2 x 60 ms (for gripper).

As the two smaller sizes PPU-E 15 and PPU-E 30, the PPU-E 50 is also moved via a wearfree direct drive, and not by a guidance transmission. Unique universality and flexibility with re-engineered machine concept The 4th generation DMC 80 U duoBLOCK® and DMC 80 FD duoBLOCK® universal machining centres have a newly developed B-axis milling head. It has an extended swivel range of 250° with a swivel of 70° in the negative direction. The larger axis bearing results in a 20 % increase in stiffness. The extended swivel range and reduced interference contour in conjunction with the cable conduit integrated into the housing enable an even wider range of customer-specific complete machining operations to be carried out. With a work area which has been increased in size by 8 % to 0.715 dm³ and a Z-axis traverse of now 850 mm, both the DMC 80 U duoBLOCK® and the DMC 80 FD duoBLOCK® have increased overall rigidity, despite their reduced footprints. This is based on structural optimisation of the reinforced, in some areas wider machine beds and columns, which in both machines are made of high-quality castings (GGG60). In addition, the supporting surfaces of the inherently rigid machine beds have been enlarged, stronger size 55 linear guides fitted on the Y-axis, and 50 mm diameter ballscrew drives incorporated. These measures and the larger bearings in the B-axis and C-axis result in a gain of

This is achieved by structurally strengthened and thermo-symmetrical machine design along with additional cooling measures. Additional cooling channels in the machine bed and column together with the liquid cooling of the feed drives on all linear axes, including that of the rotary table with C-axis motor, reliably dissipate the heat produced during chip removal. The previous cooling measures in the whole B-axis/milling head area and in the electrical cabinet have been adapted to suit the re-engineered machine structure. In spite of the increase in power, all these coordinated measures lead to a balanced temperature level in the machines. As is common with all DMG MORI machines, electronic compensation devices eliminate the residual displacement caused by temperature or the effects of static or dynamic forces. The devices, which are included as standard, are supplemented by the effective use of the Spindle Growth Sensor (SGS) to prevent axial spindle displacement. The project began in January 2010 and currently has an interdisciplinary team of over 50 students. IITMSAT will be a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite with a mission life of one year. The project’s mission is to collect data about the precipitation of high-energy electrons and protons from the Van Allen Belts in the upper-ionosphere, and to correlate with natural phenomena that cause these electro-magnetic perturbations. The data collected by IITMSAT will be transmitted to the ground station (that will be set up in IIT Madras campus) during every pass of the satellite. The satellite is estimated to be ready for launch by the end of 2015. The 12.5 kg satellite will orbit the earth at an altitude of 600-900 km. Dr. Krishna Chivukula, an alumnus of IIT Madras, is a first generation entrepreneur who started Indo-MIM in Bangalore with sales offices at China, USA and Germany. THE LAST LEAF Dear All, Innovation is one of the important tools being utilized today across the industry. It helps the development of new customer value through solutions that meet new needs or new methods or ways. Innovation refers to the use of a novel method and attribute to the notion of doing something different, signifying the principle of ‘change’. The economy grew 5.7% in the April-June period, the highest in the last ten quarters. The NDA government has completed 100 days in office now, and though the recent positive developments cannot said to be directly driven by policy measures, the fact that the new government is responsible for the comeback of a key economic ingredient — business confidence — which had been missing for a long period before it took charge on May 26, cannot be ignored. Now with the improved outlook, all eyes will be on Modi — what will he do in the coming months to build on the recent developments and bring an end to the worst slowdown in the last decade. Three months after storming into office, Modi has shown a curious mix of both resolve and caution. In his first Independence Day speech after becoming the Prime Minister, he announced key initiatives like “Skill India” aimed at providing skills to ensure employability, “Come and Make in India” to invite global manufacturers to help boost India’s industrial growth to enable “Made in India” to become a synonym of excellence, and “Swachh Bharat” to stress on the need of cleanliness across the country. This was rightly backed up with his visit to Japan, and some initiatives of co-operation between the two countries. Next, he is looking forward to the visit from Chinese Premier later this month. India has always been the heartland of innovation and technology companies. Since technology is now at the core of everything we do, India’s role in the global landscape is only going to get bigger and better in the days to come. Technology is enabling so many aspects of the way we live. It’s like the internet of everything. We are all becoming increasingly connected, not only in the way we work, but how we manage our finances, shop and even healthcare. Everything now has a component of technology that is moving that industry forward. Five Indian companies, including Hindustan Unilever and Tata Consultancy Services, are among Forbes’ list of the world’s 100 most innovative companies that investors think are most likely to “generate big, new growth ideas”. The annual ‘World’s Most Innovative Companies’ list, released recently, has been topped by California-based global cloud computing company Salesforce for the fourth year in a row. The five Indian companies on the list are Hindustan Unilever (14), Tata Consultancy Services (57), Larsen & Toubro (58), Sun Pharma (65) and Bajaj Auto (96).
