foreword Ease@Indian Manufacturing Dear Readers, I hope you all have started the journey of 2016 with innovative ideas, productive spirit and with accountability. MART’s mission is to revolutionize the reading habit of a manufacturer/ Engineer in our country. Last year we initiated several interactive sessions and conducted surveys among different users of the manufacturing industry and with their feedback we are redesigning our contents from the very first issue of 2016. Our main story talks about the impact of Mobile and Social Media in the Manufacturing sector, which is still at a very nascent stage, and proper awareness, can bring a lot of marketing and branding opportunities especially to our SMEs. I am sure that the articles featured here will give our readers innovative plans to use the social media and develop a broad customer network in the near future. The year starts with a lot of events specially designed to benchmark Indian manufacturing. Further complimenting Make in India campaign, the West Bengal government and the Andhra Pradesh Government are organizing their investment and business summit during the first half of this month. Andhra Pradesh is expected to offer a lot of facilities to the investors and the Chief Minister, Shri. Chandrababu Naidu proved his industry friendly policy during his last stint as the head of united Andhra. During his last tenure, several infrastructure projects were initiated which helped the state to bring a lot of industries. He is expecting to use his experience this time to ensure AP Invest meet is going to be a huge success! On the other hand Bengal Chief Minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee is trying to sum up the hard work she had done last year with the Bengal Global Business Summit this year which is expected to receive a greater support from the industry leaders. Another big event to take off is Make in India Week scheduled from 13th to 18th of February at MMRDA Grounds, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Mumbai. An exhibition of most innovative products and manufacturing processes developed in our country is planned at Make in India Centre along with a sector pavilion and states pavilion. Undoubtedly it will take manufacturing to newer levels. For more details and registrations please visit www.makeinindia.com Under the leadership of Mr. Parakramsinh G Jadeja, Chairman & Managing Director of Jyoti CNC Automation Limited and the newly elected President of Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers Association, IMTEX 2016 and the concurrent event TOOLTECH 2016 are scheduled from 21st to 26th of this month. Software solutions to make complex machining processes an effortless reality

Worldpremière: CTX gamma 3000 TC 2nd Generation 800 mm X travel with the new compactMASTER® turn-mill spindle rated at 220 Nm torque

With CELOS®, DMG MORI is offering a cutting-edge user interface that can be expanded with new APPs and updates and which provides an immediate solution to Industry 4.0. CELOS® is as easy to use as your smartphone, networks all machines within a manufacturing organisation and therefore simplifies the process from the idea to the finished product. 16 APPs help the operator prepare, optimise and process production jobs without any errors and enables the consistent administration, documentation and visualisation of order, process and machine data, consequently holistically improves the profitability of production.

10

www.martupdate.com

With 31 DMG MORI technology cycles as another highlight, DMG MORI is presenting software solutions on the cutting-edge5-axis and turn-mill machining centres to make complex machining processes an effortless reality. Thanks to parameterised context menus, complex processes can be directly programmed on the machine up to 60 percent faster. For the easy to learn and ready-made windows to enter data, programming is hardly needed and complicated DIN programming are avoided. Therefore, DMG MORI technology cycles are ideal for application-specific shop floor programming.

World première: CTX gamma 3000 TC2ndGeneration A turning length of 3,050 mm makes the CTX gamma 3000 TC 2nd Generation the largest turn & mill complete machining centre in the now completely revised CTX TC series from DMG MORI. Like its smaller sister models the machine tool manufacturer has also equipped this latest machine with a new compact MASTER® mill-turn spindle, which with 220 Nm achieves a 120 percent higher torque. With a diameter of 202 mm the length of the compact MASTER® spindle has been reduced by 70 mm so that it now measures only 450 mm. The interplay of the 150-

mm larger X-axis (-25 / +175 mm) and the 20-mm longer Y-travel of ± 210 mm brings an enormous gain in freedom for users. This enables, for example, the radial machining of workpieces with maximum diameters of 700 mm with 170-mm long tools (with the B-axis in a vertical position). With regard to other equipment features, the CTX gamma 3000 TC 2nd Generation is equipped with 36 tool pockets in its standard version. This capacity can be increased optionally to 80, 120 or 180 tools. Maximum tool length here is 550 mm. For more details visit www.dmgmori.com

Social Media Complements Traditional Marketing in Indian Manufacturing Let’s face it, social media marketing is perceived as primarily suited for Business to Consumer (B2C), however this does not mean that Business to Business (B2B) companies cannot also harness the power of social media. This is one marketing error that most B2B marketers usually make. B2B businesses, especially manufacturers, are often the slow to accept and integrate social media marketing.

A few years back, when the idea of reaching customers through e mail was mooted, many people were skeptical and said that it was a new fad and would die soon!! Well, it is still used as a tool in marketing communication and people are trying to find out ways and means to reach the right customers. If generalised it may be looked as a spam by those who are not related with the topic and can be labelled as spam!! The unsubscribe option makes it easier for a customer should he feel that the mail received by him is not relevant to his business. Over the years people have learnt to look at it as a marketing communication tool and there is much lesser resistance.

Now let’s look at the manufacturing. A manufacturing company can have a site on a social media like Facebook and send information through that to all those who are members of the page. Through a database of customers /potential customers the company can request them to join the page. Here the question of spam is not predominant and is much more customer friendly.

drastically changed the way companies do business. Social media today is widely used to increase brand awareness

and generate leads. While B2C industries have been fast to take advantage of this change, B2B has been slower, particularly when it comes to B2B industrial manufacturers. Even today you can hear some B2B marketing managers in the manufacturing space claim that social media is not a relevant platform for reaching their clientele.

indicates that manufacturers use social media passively – reading and consuming content, instead of creating it. Some 60% read online discussions, while about 30% actively participate and only 7% actually initiate a conversation.

The truth is actually the opposite. Today, over 80% of manufacturers use social media for marketing purposes and almost a third intend to increase their use in the next year.

In contrast to traditional marketing – content marketing takes longer, but results are far better. On average, social produces three times more leads per dollar than traditional direct marketing methods. Traditional marketing often uses a hard, straight approach to make a sale. Social Media: Boone or Bane for SME’s Marketing Engineering Products

Markets are made where sellers meet buyers. A platform that facilitates any type of interaction between the two can be optimally utilized for promotion or sales. However, conventionally it is noted that when we talk of Online sales or promotions people associate it with Business to Customer rather than Business to Business model of promotion or sales. In the Indian context where the digital revolution is picking up, people are still speculative about sales or promotions online. No doubt people do understand that having a website will give credibility to their business. However, they are yet to explore the full potential of web presence via social media.

Akanksha Lal penned4akanksha@gmail.com

Prima facie we see the reasons for not utilizing this platform are as under: 1. Second generation entrepreneurs are under control from the previous generation of business men, with old school of thought. 2. Lack of awareness about the

use and functions of social media. 3. No clear marketing directives for social media. 4. Perception: Digital marketing agencies are expensive. 5. Perception: Our audience

does not have digital literacy. India as a country is now witnessing a digital revolution. People from remote areas as well are accessing the internet to understand the available options for a typical product. Believe it or not, before any purchase people do wish to

context, marketers can more optimally use it and get more people talking about their company online. Typically, manufacturing engineering is broadly categorised for the purchase of Type A, Type B and Type C product range. Usually, Type A is more engineered and has more quality parameters to be met. These products need more precision and are critical for operations. Many companies also have special designs along with non disclosure agreements for suppliers for these products. They are high value items on the inventory list. Type B are also engineered products but have lower values and usually can be dually sourced. They are slightly less complicated

January 2016

designs. Type C are the small items, however purchased in bulk. They do not have non disclosure clause and need not necessarily be engineered to 0.01 micron precision.

Also, marketers should use content marketing by using blogs and putting up white papers on line. This will help in search engine optimization for quick access to your products.

If a marketer understands where exactly can he/ she categorise his/ her product from the above categories. They should be able to devise an optimal social media strategy. However, a marketer has to also understand that sale is not the only objective of social media. The major objective is to get people aware of your organization’s product offerings and create a brand presence which eventually will lead to business enquiry. The major tools that could be used are Linkedin, youtube, facebook and twitter.

Now, a major challenge a marketer might face is to control the dialogue from the comments section in social media portals. As a marketer, we can always use this as upfront customer

business deliverables and ethics. Thus, it is basically up to the marketer to use social media as a Boone or bane. Go Digital: New Mantra for Survival

As we have stepped in 2016, let me start by reiterating a well-known fact that “We all are living in a DIGITAL ERA!” And, any business which doesn’t realize this as of now, may have to lag behind. Undoubtedly it is the hard reality.

Sonia Chugh SoniaSpecialist@gmail.com

Let me just put forth a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) which estimates that people with internet access will be nearly 3.2 billion in 2016, which is 44% of the world population.

Out of which, 2 billion users will be using it on mobile. In other words, almost every second person will be using Internet in 2016 and it’s an average figure of the world, the percent of Internet

users will be much higher in developed countries and developing nations. That’s why it’s imperative for businesses of all sizes to include digital marketing in their marketing strategy. Usually, there is an

always misconception that “digital marketing is made for the top corporate with heavy purse only”. I totally agree that nothing comes FREE in the world, so any business has to spend money, but I believe,

In 2016, Don’t underestimate the power of DIGITAL MARKETING

it’s the way of approach that makes the REAL difference in results. Precisely; SME usually faces two major roadblocks, first when starts a new business (start-up) where basic ask is to focus on clients as well as maintaining a strong bond with partners. Second, when expansion has to take place to move business to the next level. But, these Roadblocks can be turned into Success path, just by planning and executing an effective digital marketing strategy tailored for business’s needs. According to my best practices, benefits which digital marketing can offer to any SME are: • Brand Building: The best thing about the Internet is that it doesn’t come with any boundaries. And, that’s the reason; SMEs should utilize the opportunity by taking brand global. With the help

of digital marketing, they can cross borders and can compete with rivals, both locally and internationally. • Lead Generation: Just like any other business, even a SME also works with a vision to expand the business. For expansion, new leads are MUST. I have witnessed that digital marketing can play a major role in lead generation also. • Business Development: With a concrete digital marketing plan, a SME can win clients, which were next to impossible with the traditional way of marketing. • Traffic to website: SME can increase the website visitors by simply applying SEO efforts effectively. It doesn’t mean the needs to spend a big junk of marketing budget on SEO. It can be lethal with its paid offerings and also using tactically.

• Social Media: We all understand the importance of networking, with the presence on the social media channels; it will not only help in multiple ways but certainly add value to the business also.

Impact of Mobile & Social Media with Big Data in Manufacturing The manufacturing industry, not just in India but globally is undergoing a serious metamorphosis. Consumers are at the center of this transformation. Purchasing patterns have been redefined due to the ubiquity of information being consumed via mobile devices on social networks. A highly informed brand agnostic consumer wants a wide variety of customized products and doesn’t want to wait.

Rajesh Angadi rajesh_angadi@hotmail.com

This evolution in consumer behavior is shaking up the entire supply chain – manufacturers, distributors and retailers. In the midst of these developments, and due to significant political and economic developments, Indian manufacturing suddenly finds itself under the spotlight. Global enterprises are making a play in the sector, and foreign investments are pouring in. In order to make an attractive investment destination, manufacturing sector needs to invest in technology solutions like iBPMS that amalgamate their traditional strengths but also help leverage Social, Big Data and the Cloud. This will drive the sector’s ability to adopt new business models and respond to changes in consumer demand both in India and globally. Manufacturers have an abundance of operational and shop floor data that is being used for tracking today. There has been a significant shift in how medium to large

size businesses are viewing, and examining, their Social footprints. They are wanting to find out if using the multitude of different Social channels to disseminate their respective company’s messages works better than concentrating on only the big two, Facebook and Twitter. We need to look past the nearly one-way avenue of posting news and announcements strictly on Facebook, and start exploring what we can learn from our clients (they are willing to share!) and see also how they can benefit from having a centralized place where they can constructively share their ideas and have open conversations with each other about the products/services concerned. The convergence of the Internet, Web 2.0, and mobile technologies has created a disruptive shift in business. The era of Business-to-Person (B2P) communications driven by all things social (social media, social

networks, and social influence) has emerged as a new model for engagement. Social Media Peer Groups (SMPG) have evolved to take important and influential shape in a new business and economic environment. This shift has disintermediated many longstanding •Traditional Manufacturing and Marketing Practices •Communications Practice and •Pre-sales and Selling beliefs due to analysis and analytics which have guided how companies should interact, support, and collaborate with their manufacturing sector, supply chain management and customers. Mobile and Social media’s growing data impacts on manufacturing sector as follows 1. The rise of SMAC and Big Data: Social, mobile, analytics

The transition from the 2nd IT Platform (client/server applications) to the 3rd IT Platform (based on cloud, mobility, social business, and Big Data analytics technologies) promises to create a real-time, collaborative, decision-making environment that will be pivotal to supporting manufacturers as they make the shift from a transactional to a real-time business. 2. the incessant pressure to accelerate time to market due to the retailer and consumer demands, more companies will find themselves shifting their manufacturing strategies from outsourcing overseas to developing products closer to where they will be sold. Globally local manufacturing or ‘Nextshoring’ will give manufacturers much needed agility in replenishing stock inventory which means the consumer gets his product quicker and warehousing, shipping costs are reduced. 3. End-to-End supply chain transparency: End-to-end supply chain transparency will be a crucial marketing strategy for the future. Manufacturers that maintain a clear line of sight with regards to supply, demand, and capacity across their supply chain will foster collaboration among trading partners and ensure more effectiveness, responsiveness, and robust overall performance. We need to look past the nearly one-way avenue of posting news and announcements strictly on Facebook, and start exploring what we can learn from our clients (they are willing to share!) and see also how they can benefit from having a

centralized place where they can constructively share their ideas and have open conversations with each other about the products/services concerned. By doing so you have given your customers a voice. Facebook We can use Facebook to share product photos, post marketingcentric announcements, listen to customer feedback, and thereby help build our brand. Facebook should not be a choice for enterprise level social requirements, and should be reserved for positive, brandsolidifying announcements and/or should be used when making a resolution-based announcement. By staying focused on the positive side of things on Facebook, your community of people who “like” your corporate offerings will grow and become more active. Twitter Twitter can be leveraged to deliver small, easily digestible 140-character info-bits to your followers about breaking-news from inside the company, sharable industry news and information on upcoming trends. By utilizing hashtags (#) in their Tweets, they are able

to reach a far greater audience (and potential customer base) than simply those who are following them. By using this one simple tool manufacturers can see a dramatic upturn of people reading their messages and retweeting them, thereby expanding their reach even further with every tweet. As we enter the era of businessto-person (B2P) customer relationship systems, those organizations that harness Web 2.0 technologies and SMPG platforms to enable B2P communications will be the winners. Laggards who do not understand the value of social networking and its appeal to the emotional side of customer relationship management will lose competitiveness and, ultimately, market share. Perhaps most importantly, they will lose the ability to connect and learn from their customers. Professional networks and business-focused online communities are becoming the new strategic mandate. Effective customer relationships are the core to any successful organization, and the strength of any organization is largely dependent upon the company’s ability to deliver the right

products and services to its customers in a timely way. Knowing what customers want and understanding their current and future needs is paramount to increasing revenue and exceeding customer expectations. Online communities provide a prime opportunity for organizations to get to know their customers more intimately and keep the finger on the pulse of their needs and behaviors. The time is now for companies to embrace communities to help them serve their clients better, faster and in more costefficient ways. Through the use of online professional networks, companies now have an opportunity to forge a dialogue with their customers actively throughout the lifecycle—not just at the point of sale—to learn what they like and don’t like about a product or service. This in turn is helping manufacturing sector. Data Rich Information Poor: Problem or Opportunity It is not uncommon to hear the phrase “Data Rich, but Information Poor” in the context of enterprise information systems. Companies store data without descriptive properties in inconsistent formats and

scatter the data on a variety of computers. This graveyard of information makes it extremely difficult to locate a particular data set and to base decisions on it. As a result, many companies are seeing a loss in efficiency and an increase in development costs while their “islands of information” continue to isolate information from those who need it the most. This is especially true when it comes to Big Data, given the three Vs of Big Data, namely Volume, Variety and Velocity. What seems like a big problem posed by data deluge is in fact a great opportunity if only companies can unlock the potential of Big Data using predictive analytics.

Cluster analysis and Causal Path analysis can be used very effectively with big data. For example, rather than analyzing “historic” attrition rates, predictive analytics will make it possible for companies to identify critical incidents leading to customer attrition so that steps can be taken to retain the customer before he/she defects. So whether Big Data deluge is a problem or an opportunity depends on what you make of it. It can be a great opportunity if advanced statistical tools are used for analyzing big data and derived insights made available to decision makers and front line employees in real time, if not it can be a great problem.

Since Big Data is characterized by not only Volume, but also Velocity and Variety, it is very important that Big Data is used for analysis in real-time to predict the future and take corrective action based on that analysis. The real value is in using insights derived from predictive analytics and taking corrective action before it is too late, rather than just reporting historical information. Techniques like Multiple-regression analysis coupled with Factor analysis,

What seems like a big problem posed by data deluge is in fact a great opportunity if only companies can unlock the potential of Big Data using predictive analytics. Big data and analytics enable enterprises to generate greater insights and improve efficiency or develop new products, services or business models. However, there are many considerations about source data to get actionable insights. Successful big data

and analytics initiatives involve a variety of decisions, from mapping business strategy to use cases to making the right technical choices to implement a cost-effective system. Organizations also need to consider aspects such as data governance, privacy, organizational change and talent management. As big data technologies evolve at a rapid pace and analytics make it possible to extract greater insights, big data and analytics are set to become a mainstay in an enterprises. Many “BigData” technologies used to crunch these varieties of data and get meaningful insights. These analytics can be historical or Real-time. Big Data’s Impact on Manufacturing Is Growing 1) Better forecasts of product demand and production (46%), understanding plant performance across multiple metrics (45%) and providing service and support to customers faster (39%) are the top three areas big data can improve manufacturing performance.

2) Accelerating the integration of IT, manufacturing and operational systems making the vision of Industries into a reality- Big data is already being used for optimizing production schedules based on supplier, customer, machine availability and cost constraints which will help to achieve the goal of developing Smart Factories. 3) Greater visibility into supplier quality levels, and greater accuracy in predicting supplier performance over time. Using big data and advanced analytics, manufacturers are able to view product quality and delivery accuracy in real-time, making trade-offs on which suppliers receive the most time-sensitive orders. Managing to quality metrics becomes the priority over measuring delivery schedule performance alone. 4) Selling only the most profitable customized or build-to-order configurations of products that impact production the least. For many complex manufacturers, customized or build-to-order products deliver higher-thanaverage gross margins yet also costs exponentially more if

production processes aren’t well planned. Using advanced analytics, manufacturers are discovering which of the myriad of build-to-order configurations they can sell with the most minimal impact to existing production schedules to the machine scheduling, staffing and shop floor level. 5) Quantify how daily production impacts financial performance with visibility to the machine level. Big data and advanced analytics are delivering the missing link that can unify daily production activity to the financial performance of a manufacturer. Being able to know to the machine level if the factory floor is running efficiently, production planners and senior management know how best to scale operations. By unifying daily production to financial metrics, manufacturers have a greater chance of profitably scaling their operations. 6) Service becomes strategic and a contributor to customers’ goals by monitoring products and proactively providing preventative maintenance recommendations. Manufacturers are starting to look at the more complex products they produce as needing an operating system to manage the sensors onboard. These sensors report back activity and can send alerts for preventative maintenance. Big data and analytics will make the level of recommendations contextual for the first time so customers can get greater value. Although big data involves data from mobile and social media, it is has the long-term potential for growing new business and provides an opportunity for companies to start building brand-centric

communities supported by (and even managed by) their users, customers and suppliers. If given the appropriate forum, people actually enjoy being brand ambassadors, they enjoy sharing their positive product/ service experiences and they tend to bring along others in the process. Each of the social tools listed above has a place, a time and a specific use case in the footprint of your social initiatives. By utilizing them in tandem, and by completing these initiatives with a hosted, privatized Social portal, you’ve completed the circle and can now start to LISTEN to what your clients and suppliers are saying. Digital India is Going to Run the Show in Indian Manufacturing

Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra Managing Director, Kemppi India

Mr. Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra, BE, MBA in Marketing, having 21 years of experience in Industrial consumables and equipment in the Indian, European and South East Asian Market, has worked for Linde, earlier known as BOC India, ADOR Welding and currently works as the National Sales Manager of KEMPPI INDIA based at Chennai since April 2011. Social Media is the newest platform of communication; be it for buying or selling a product or to express opinion on social issues. But, how can it help the manufacturing - which is supposedly a very rough area of business and only caters to a section of business class and industry experts? Well, yes, manufacturing is no more an unattended subject! Modern manufacturing is gaining popularity through its online presence and marketing initiatives through social media network.

SUCCESS STORY

Paharpur- Manufacturer of the Rising East When it comes to manufacturing today, eastern part of India is seldom found in the books of the investors. Here, Paharpur Cooling Towers Ltd is a shining name of glory. The story unfolded back in 1948, soon after independence, and it still rolls on with newer dimensions of success and achievements, making the name of the small town ‘Paharpur’ famous worldwide, a name once unheard even to a citizen of Kolkata!

‘’Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises” – Demosthenes Something similar happens with India’s most prominent cooling tower company, Paharpur Cooling Towers. The company has had a continuous presence in the

market for over fifty years and has developed several

breakthrough technologies to provide solutions to complicated problems. Its engineering and production standards often exceed general standards with a fixed objective- to provide low cost, reliable, best quality products to the clients. . This Indian company, today, is the largest manufacturer of industrial cooling towers in the world. But was the starting struggle so easy?

Inception: “ The challenge with being an initiator of projects is that you are never, ever done” - Seth Godin Back in 1948, Mr. Mahendra Swarup created his own timber company at Paharpur to manufacture wooden crates, and his innovations offered specialized wood for diversified applictions. In

1957, a ship from Scandinavia carrying foreign timber for a cooling tower at Fertilizer Corporation of India, Sindri, caught fire, destroying its cargo. Mr. Swarup, who had by then become renowned as a timber expert in the country was asked to supply an equivalent quality of Indian wood to make up for this loss. After carrying

out a series of accelerated tests on several Indian timber species, a suitable wood was supplied to FCI. However this exposition gave the opportunity to Mr. Swarup to enter into the new prospective business of cooling towers. Initially, he established contact with Marley Cooling Tower company of the US and sought technological assistance

from it. In 1959, the company supplied its first cooling tower plant to Rourkela Steel plant. Ever since, numerous orders followed and the company completed several high profile projects and gathered a powerful order book and expertise. In 1968, it received its first export order and a year later an order for a giant hyperbolic natural

draught cooling tower. In 1971, the transition happened from Paharpur Timbers to Paharpur Cooling Towers. Rolling Camera on Present: Paharpur doesnot restrict itself to only manufacturing and supplying cooling towers, but believes in the concept of turnkey responsibility – including transportation to

site, erection, commissioning and testing of complete cooling towers. Be it for civil design or logistics support, Paharpur is fully geared to offer single-source responsibility to customers. Now, for a company so responsible and ethical in business, what is the present market scenario? Market View:

“The purpose of a business is to create a customer” - Peter Drucker Paharpur Cooling Towers, today, has become a huge corporation, linking applications ranging from power plants, steel plants, fertiliser plants, chemical and petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries to

hotels, shopping malls, airports, metro stations, hospitals, schools, sugar plants, oil factories, and paper mills across India. It has an overwhelming share of the Indian market. At over 60% by sale, it has carved a powerful niche in India’s industrial firmament. In the export business, Paharpur has installations

in more than fifty countries including France, Japan, and China to name a few. Paharpur’s prices tend to be very competitive on C&F basis, particularly in neighbouring countries. So, what is the Unique Selling Point of Paharpur Cooling Towers to tap the growing business? Add-ons: Unique in the industry, Paharpur focuses on serving the needs of the customers - needs which are far in advance of the actual purchase of a new cooling tower. Paharpur offers additional services like Application/ Layout Service, Construction Service, Parts Service, Maintenance Service, Performance Improvement Service, Tower Replacement Service, Condition Service and Cooling Tower Information Service. Quality Management: At today’s selling prices, Paharpur has sold cooling towers valued at over Rs. 28,500 crore since inception. For this big achievement, quality needs

January 2016

to be checked thoroughly in every phase of production. Right from the beginning, Paharpur recognised that assembling a cooling tower from an agglomeration of commercially available components was counterproductive to quality and dependability. Therefore, each component of Paharpur Cooling Towers is both designed and manufactured by Paharpur itself. To ensure quality Paharpur invests strongly in R&D. These developments take place within Paharpur’s R&D centre located in Kolkata - the most extensive and unique cooling tower test facility in the country. Components are accurately tested before introducing into market. Ideas from a wide range of engineering division and customers are either proven under the worst possible practical conditions or rejected as not suitable. Through this, the engineering team can recommend with the authority the technical superior products with quality.

Our journey started in 1948 February when my father Mr. Mahendra Swarup had founded Paharpur Timbers Pvt Ltd at Paharpur, near the dock area, Garden reach, Kolkata. From the beginning my Father tried to introduce new technology/ innovations. We were the first company in India to introduce pressure treatment in timber. He embraced latest technologies, innovated with value added products and services to race ahead of competition. He was always ahead and a pioneer in the timber industry. The major innovations made by Paharpur Cooling Towers Limited? We were the first one to make Mechanical Draft Towers in India in 1959. We were the pioneer and the first company in manufacturing cooling towers in India. Earlier, there were cooling towers which were constructed by solid concrete – natural draft hyperbolic. We diversified our business into Dry cooling during mid nineties and now it is one of the fastest growing markets in the world. Today, dry cooling products are about entire production. We have two ranges of cooling CTI (Cooling Technology Institute, Houston, USA) Towers . We are the only company in India having CTI certified Cross Flow cooling towers. Your take on ‘Make in India’ and the immediate results we can witness in Indian manufacturing? We always believe in Make in India, and we are doing it for the last six decades. When we are getting foreign companies to come over and manufacture in India, they are looking to manufacture for the Indian

Vikram Swarup Managing Director Paharpur Cooling Towers Limited domestic market. However, these multinational companies should target the world market, using India as their manufacturing base. Paharpur is a global manufacturer and can you put some light on the global market of Indian products? It’s a fact that Indian companies are globally competitive and expanding their base globally. But we should ensure sub-standard Indian companies should not be allowed to export; it gives a lot of pressure on companies like us. Because of the bad experience had by foreign customers with substandard Indian companies, they are reluctant to purchase cooling towers from India. Not just cooling towers, this is applicable for all products. Japanese companies do not compete with each other in the global market. But that practice is not there in India.

Paharpur draws its strength from five large and modern, fully integrated ISO 9001 certified manufacturing plants located at Kolkata and Bhasa in West Bengal, Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh, Kandla in Gujrat and a newly opened Dry Cooling manufacturing unit at Savli, Baroda, Gujarat.

Products Portfolio: Paharpur today has a complete range of factoryassembled and unitary products, intermediate industrial applications and dry cooling products including India’s first CTI-certified cross flow tower and single row condenser units. All cooling towers are not massive

structures. But Paharpur rules the space ranging towers costing less than Rs. 50,000 to giant edifices which can cost more than Rs. 200 crore. Some of its products areSeries AQ-3800 GRP, Series 6KF GRP, Series 9KF, Series QF-20K, OXF-30K, and Series CF-1, CF-2 and CF-3. Products from Comfort Cooling and Intermediate Industrial

Applications range from Series 9SF, 10DF, and Series 15 & 18 in timber or pultruded FRP structure. For large industrial applications, products range from Class 400 Wood, GRP, Steel and Class 800 Concrete, Class 600 Wood, Class 1000 Concrete. Apart from these, there are cooling towers

which are suitable for very high heat load applications and available in massive hyperbolic natural draught design. Air-cooled Heat Exchangers, Air Cooled Steam Condensers are also in offer from Paharpur. In today’s market, dry-cooling is of more value compared to wetcooling. Paharpur has already initiated new products like Single Row Condenser- first of its kind in India. Act Global: Paharpur has representative offices in many countries across the continent- South America, Europe, and Asia. It has an office in USA since 2003. To expand further, they opened offices in Bahrain, Middle East; Switzerland, Europe. Recently they have opened a new office at Brussels, Belgium to operate as Global Headquarters of Paharpur International. End is the New Beginning: Seizing opportunities made Mr. Swarup’s dream an international reality. Paharpur today has a unique tale to tell. It set a world record by having eighteen natural

January 2016

draught cooling towers under construction simultaneously! In Singapore, a road was named Paharpur Avenue because almost every building on that road had a Paharpur Cooling Tower! Starting a business is tough. According to the surveys done by various industry associations, about 65% of all businesses fail within ten years after they are launched. There are these tough challenges of time, leadership, financial resources, talent acquisition and many more. But overpowering these negatives, the story of Mr. Swarup’s success in making his dream into the reality can sure inspire, motivate, upgrade and create many more entrepreneurs in India to dream big, think big and make big! To conclude we may quote Ms. Mary Kay Ash: “When you reach an obstacle, turn it into an opportunity. You have the choice. Go that extra mile that failures refuse to travel. It is far better to be exhausted from success than to be rested from failure.”

we are expecting a change. NTPC etc. are setting up plants now and with exports we will be able to ensure that business growth is revived. What makes you ahead of your competitors? Many cooling tower manufacturers in the world have operations in India. But we

It’s more than a year PM announced ‘Make-in-India’. How Indian industry got benefited with this campaign, and your take on its future? Make in India has led to ease of doing business. It has given a boost to manufacturing sector. The initiative is a positive step towards manufacturing which presently contributes to 16% of the GDP. Government of India envisages to increase this to around 25% in another 10 years. Such growth in manufacturing would also give a fillip to the machine tool industry which is expected to grow manifolds. How IMTMA plans to strengthen Indian SMEs? SMEs contribute to about 80 – 90%

to all manufacturing units in India and around 40% of the current market size of the Indian machine tool industry. Industry reports have stated that nearly 80% of the SMEs are not IT and automation enabled. The operations are largely manual, using low-end solutions that are difficult to maintain. It is essential for SMEs to adopt automation. Indian SMEs need to be made aware of the payback results (return on investment), simplicity in operation, design, flexibility and maintenance. IMTMA will organize a Seminar on Automation in February this year which would address the needs of the industry as well as strengthen Indian SMEs. IMTMA will also organize a regional machine tool expo in Pune to make available the latest technology and innovations for SMEs in Tier II and Tier III cities of India. Regional council meets organized by IMTMA give opportunities for SMEs to undertake plant visits and witness the best practices followed by established industries.

IMTMA provides an opportunity for Indian Academic and R&D institutions to showcase their R&D capabilities in metalworking field. Celebrating 120 Years of the Power Tool A Global Success Story of German Engineering

Every industry has drilling needs and finding an electric drill is inevitable. They are also indispensable in home needs and manual trades, in addition to being one of the most popular tools in use today, they are also the oldest. The electrically-driven drill was invented and developed by FEIN employees in Stuttgart in 1895, making it the first power tool in the world. FEIN’s new invention grew into a wide range of drills, including magnetic core drills. To mark the 120th anniversary of this indispensable tool, FEIN is telling the story of the electric drill.

Ameer A Munaff m.ameer@fein.in

Archaeological evidence has revealed that boring holes was one of the very earliest human activities. The simple hand drill was quickly improved with the use of a mechanical drive. For a long time, however, manual drills dominated until the development of small, reliable electric motors. By the late 19th century the technology had progressed significantly, and in 1895 a key turning point took place. Friedrich Heep and Jakob Wahl, two young mechanics at FEIN in Stuttgart, were looking for a faster way to drill hundreds of holes in steel. They took one of the new small electric motors, fitted a drill chuck to the spindle – and set to work. Without the engineering knowledge and business acumen of their employer Emil Fein, their invention would probably never had progressed further than a clever idea used within the company. Wilhelm Emil Fein, the son of the company’s founder, recognised the potential of the improvised electric drill. Working in partnership with Otto von Kellenbach, he developed the tool to the point where it

could be marketed. The two had developed the world’s first power tool. It was a key moment in the history of the company. In 1908 the workshop for the production of physical and electrical apparatus began specialising in the development of electric tools. Over 7 kilograms in weight and 50 watts of power: the first FEIN drill conquered the market. The world’s first electric hand drill was powered by 110 volts of direct current. It achieved 1200 rpm and had a power output of 50 W. It was able to drill around 4 mm into steel. However, the tool’s handling and shape were very different from today’s models. It weighed 7.5 kilograms and had to be held with both hands. A breastplate allowed the operator to lean his full weight on the machine to drive the drill into the material. The first electric drill was soon imitated by other well-known companies. In spite of strong competition, FEIN emerged as the innovation leader, continually improving its invention. For example, FEIN was

one of the first manufacturers to launch a drill with a lightweight metal housing. In 1901 the first drill with mechanical gear reduction appeared on the market. The reduced speed made it possible to drill larger holes in steel. FEIN unveiled the first multi-speed drill in 1903. The FEIN GMAS could drill holes with a diameter of up to 5 mm. The first angle drill was launched in 1908, again developed by FEIN. The motors were also continually improved, for example, to allow them to withstand overload. What’s more, FEIN focused on safety from a very early stage. The first model to feature an emergency stop switch (the FEIN N72) was launched as early as 1910. The distinctive orange of FEIN power tools was chosen by FEIN’s product development team in the 1920s, again for safety reasons. The aim was to develop tools that delivered more power but were smaller, lighter and easier to handle. Ergonomics, therefore, played an important role in the evolution of drill design. Designers experimented with different shapes of handles and housings,

with the available motor technology also influencing the size and construction of the drill. In around 1920 there were four basic types: the pistol shape, the spade shape, which had been developed by FEIN in 1919, the cross handle and the rod shape. The pistol grip from another manufacturer is still the most popular type today. FEIN achieved another significant weight reduction in 1933 when it became the first manufacturer to develop a motor housing made of insulating material. Another major advancement was the development of infinitely variable electronic speed control. In the late 1960s, FEIN launched the first drill with full wave electronics. Electronic control was gradually adopted in all drills. The increased development of this technology not only made drills more versatile and user-friendly, but also considerably reduced the unit costs (and still does today). The models in the BOP range are the most recent successors of the very first electric hand drill. One factor that was crucial to the success

January 2016

of the power drill in the DIY sector was the development and refinement of storage battery technology. Initially, cordless drills represented a compromise in that they offered the flexibility of not being tied to a power socket, but less power. Over the last 30 years cordless drills have become established alongside mains-powered tools in professional applications too. The further enhancement of battery technology means that today, one in every two power tools shipped is a cordless model. The history of the electric hand drill is closely linked to the Industrial Revolution and the growing need to be able to process hard materials such as steel, rock, concrete and masonry efficiently. When it came to thick, solid or brittle materials, even the new electric drills were sometimes unsuitable for the job, which resulted in the rapid development of specialised drilling tools. In terms of power tools, these included hammer

drills, impact drills and core drills. Hammer drills and impact drills work on the same principle: the rotational movement of the drill is combined with movement along its axis. The key difference lies in the construction of the bit. In an impact drill the bit also moves in the direction of the axis, but in a hammer drill it does not. The bit on an impact drill is driven rhythmically into the material by a pneumatic striking mechanism, independent of the drill chuck. With a hammer drill, the bit vibrates. This means the impact drill has a much lower striking frequency but each impact has more force. Impact drills are mostly used to drill larger holes in very solid rock and concrete, while hammer drills are used for materials where an ordinary drill is unsuitable (such as concrete, reinforcements or natural stone). The striking mechanism can also be switched off if necessary. The first hammer drills were developed by FEIN in 1910 and the first impact drill in

1914. The impact drill achieved commercial success – thanks in part to its use outside of mining and heavy industry. For a long time, this name was synonymous with impact drills. Compact handguided hammer drills did not go into series production until 1952. Drilling accurate holes with a diameter of 14 mm or more in very hard and tough material is difficult, even for powerful drills. The solution is core drilling, in which a drill bit ‘cuts’ a circle into the material and the core falls out, leaving behind a precisioncut hole with minimal burrs. Unlike the electric drill, hammer drill and impact drill, core drilling has so far remained limited to professional use in industry and manual trades. This is due to the applications they are used for and the size and handling of the tools. Because of the high torques involved in core drilling, the tools need to be supported on a secure base. For tools specifically designed for drilling metal, the drill jig is secured by

an electromagnet. FEIN is the pioneer of this technique. As early as 1908 the company was producing heavy drills fixed by an electromagnet. As with hand-guided drills, the trend in core drills for metal is towards ever more safe, convenient and ergonomic tools. This can be seen in the FEIN KBM 32 Q and the FEIN KBM 80 auto, for example. In 2000 the FEIN KBM 32 Q was the first core drilling unit to weigh less than 10 kg. Its compact design and low power to weight ratio make it the ideal tool for assembly work. It was now possible to use a core drill on the work site itself. Improvements and innovations in handling are making the use of core drills safer and more user-friendly. Once again, FEIN is among the pioneers: the KBM 80 auto is the first core drill with fully automatic, digitally controlled drill feed, eliminating the need for manual intervention in the

drilling process. The KBH 25 signalled another breakthrough in drilling technology: the world’s first hand-guided core drilling system for metal combines the advantages of a powerful hand drill with the benefits of a carbide drilling tool. Drills are used in a wide range of situations, from DIY to machine and plant construction. Therefore, the most important consideration when buying a drill is that the power rating of the drill should be matched to the application. 1. Power: High figures for the rated power consumption are not especially meaningful. The important data are the power output and speed under load. The bit and speed should be selected according to the material. 2. Robustness: Electric drills are subjected to high mechanical loads, so the workmanship of a tool is an important quality factor. A professional machine must be able to handle impact, dirt and being dropped. This demands an excellent standard of workmanship, for example, a barrel-type housing with shielded motor and metal gearbox head. 3. Ergonomics/Handling: The tool must sit comfortably in the hand even after prolonged use. This demands an ergonomically

designed handle and balanced weight. All controls must be easily accessible. The tool should also vibrate as little as possible. 4. Quality of results: In professional drilling, the precision of the drilled hole is the key criterion. The most important prerequisite for this is high concentricity. This is achieved through the precise construction and workmanship of the drill chuck, spindle and motor – which comes at a price. At Imtex 2016, FEIN will be launching the new economical magnetic metal core drilling machines that are durable and are suitable for twist drilling applications as well. The KBE magnetic metal core drilling series will come in three variants: KBE 35 – single speed drilling up to 35 mm; KBE 50-2 and KBE 50-2 M – two-speed drilling up to 50 mm. The magnetic base will have a strong holding force of 12000 N and KBE has the largest stroke range on the market. The KBE series provide an optimum power-to-weight ratio; side changeable feed hand-wheel for usage in narrow or difficult to reach places; integrated coolant tank for longer service life of the tools; made in Germany quality and many more features

at most affordable price. All three variants will be on display at IMTEX 2016 and live demos will be held at FEIN’s stall in the German pavilion. The world’s first power tool was invented by C. & E. Fein GmbH. Wilhelm Emil Fein founded the Company in 1867. In 1895, FEIN invented the electric hand drill, the first-ever power tool. Today this long-standing Company is a world-renowned power tool manufacturer. The Use Of Hydraulics In Metal Forming Equipment Visit stall no. D107 in Hall 3

Flex Cam Systems allows reduction in number of tools required and brings flexibility in working angles and cam loads

Modern metal-forming equipment, such as transfer presses and progressive presses for large parts, which have mechanized components inside, demand more intelligent tool concepts that guarantee greater process reliability and efficiency. And that is not all: parts should only be allowed to tip over under certain, limited circumstances and the tool design must take account of the complex and inconvenient contours associated with mechanization, particularly in the shapes of slides and drivers. These stringent criteria have led to the development of new machine tool engineering and design methods. Only the hydraulic system is depressurized in the at-rest state. In contrast, the accumulator,

which is filled with nitrogen, has an initial pressure p = 170 bar, although this does not act on the hydraulic system when at rest. During the up stroke, the crown of the press acts on the driving cylinder (master). The volumetric oil flow generated by entry of the plunger into the master cylinder actuates and extends the working cylinder (slave), against the restoring force generated by the prepressurized gas inside. At the end of the working stroke, the excess oil is forced through the open compression space and into the gas-filled accumulator. The piston compresses the gas in the accumulator according to the volume of excess oil. The accumulator acts as an autonomous gas spring. The

master cylinder and the slave cylinder connected. To it are reset when the tool is opened by means of an integral gas spring. This system may be used in the crown of the press, i.e. with the installation position turned through 180°, with no further adaptation. The system in the master/ slave cylinder is characterized by simple and intelligent combination of the different properties of oil and gas(non-compressible / compressible). The master/slave system is used to implement an autonomous hydraulic system which is based on proven gas spring components and can thus be intelligently

supplemented with hydraulic components to form a highly sophisticated standard element for machine tools. Most of the SMEs in India are not aware of the upgraded supporting practices- be it of Governmental policies or of technical systems. MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE

Focus on Corporate Social Responsibility Managing a SME in India - Part 37

As a continuation of last article, we will discuss on few more points to manage SME’s better in India. In this part of Article, let us look at benefits of CSR to the companies, what options are available for companies and how small efforts can be done by the companies to meet the social responsibility.

P S Satish gotopssatish@gmail.com

Benefits of CSR to the companies: o Increase of brand equity of companies and their products o Enhances morale of the employees which in turn supports productivity and retention o Better usage of resources o Increased product safety and less liability issues o Better image of the company that helps in marketing and especially exports o Less intervention by the Government and public allowing freedom of operation o Better internal and external relationships o No guilt feeling of exploiting natural resources I will give example here on

boosting morale of employees. Commendable initiative! The vice-president of the marketing of the company says that he is proud to work for the company which thinks of social responsibility.

- Reduces profit and ability to compete

Opposite views on CSR For any thinking, there will always be contrarian thinking by few and CSR is no exception. These views cannot be ignored simply by declaring as cynical. Few may give a good input to reinforce the CSR activities in the company. I

Some opposite views are – - Just a cosmetic without social benefit My view: The companies if they integrate CSR as one of their values, then they will do without only for show off and marketing

habits and practices right - Poses responsibility on business than individuals My view: Top management has to take responsibility to educate each employee on his or her social responsibility. After all, business is nothing but individuals together - Takes away management focus from core business

My view: In-fact by a better image and increase of morale of employees, profit will increase and can compete well

My view: If the company tries doing CSR as a separate activity and not integrated into their system, this can be overcome. Do not consider that CSR as a separate activity

- Will make company vulnerable to exposure of non-ethical practices

- Difficulty in handling social skills which the company may lack

My view: If company is looking for long term sustenance, they need to overcome this. Embracing CSR is an opportunity to set some of old

My view: There are many NGOs and consultants available who can help the company in integrating CSR into their system and train employees

CSR is no more for doing for the sake of someone else but needed activity for our survival

to change thinking and also on skills needed - It is a market gimmick My view: Agree that few companies are doing that. But CSR is an activity which should originate from inside and not to please someone or for publicity. We have companies like Tata, Birla, Bosch etc. who are doing services for the social cause silently without expecting anything in return Options for companies on CSR Companies have following options on either to react or respond to CSR activities: Reactive: Do nothing on their own. But react when the government, NGO or the court insists. This attitude is difficult to spread CSR. The company will do only just what is required. Defensive: The companies tries to defend that doing business and giving employment itself a social responsibility they are doing and nothing more need

January 2016

to be done. They will become cynical for any suggestions on CSR and they defend to maintain status quo. Lot of efforts are required to change their attitude Accommodative: Such companies will try to do little more than what is required though they are not pro-active. Encourage them to do more. Pro-active: These companies take voluntarily measures without any force from outside. They understand their responsibilities. They become role models for other companies Guidelines for implementing CSR by companies Better to be pro-active. Take action before you have to. CSR is no more for doing for the sake of someone else but needed activity for our survival If a mistake is done, better openly admit it. It is better than defending and trying to hide Establish corporate code of conduct

Get involved in social problems and encourage your employees also to do so In the values of company, let Environment, society and safety of employees find a place Be clear on your stand on social issues Focus on profit of the company as well. Without profit, you cannot do any CSR activities CSR should be made part of business culture. In any strategy taken related to the company or business, points connected with CSR to be considered Let CSR go beyond charity. It may start with charity CSR by SMEs There is a myth that CSR is only for big companies to consider and not for SMEs. Many SMEs may not fall into category where they have to abide companies act of CSR of 2013. Does it mean that SMEs should simply be spectators?

Answer is no. SMEs also have moral responsibilities and they can start CSR in a small way by creating awareness in the employees and doing activities within the company. They need to look for intrinsic motivation to be a responsible company to give back to society for having taken so much from it. The CSR activity or initiative in the company or individual starts with a thinking process and let us all think about our responsibility and take a first step first. We need to develop attitude of gratitude towards mother earth and society. Good luck and good day. TALENT MANAGEMENT

Performance Appraisal Checklist for Managers Well, it’s that time of the year! As the famous adage goes - Firing and Performance Review are the only two things which a manager is scared of and ‘Getting fired’ and ‘Performance Review’ are the only two things which an employee is scared of.

Pavan Sriram pavan@ittige.com

Performance appraisal was once the unquestioned way of doing things, the familiar ritual in which employees and managers sat down for an annual evaluation. If the employees were lucky, they walked away with raises, often tied to a ranking on some sort of rigid numerical scale. But today, with the widespread emphasis on teamwork, shared leadership, and an on-going struggle to find and retain qualified employees,

it’s a model that is falling increasingly out of favour. In a recent survey conducted by SHRM, 32% of the HR professionals surveyed cited deficiencies in leadership development, coaching, 360-degreefeedback, and development planning in their performance management process. 22% said that the greatest challenge they and appraising managers face is a lack of a defined structure and

post review metrics.

in the future.

Top 4 reasons why majority of performance appraisals fail:

2) The Recency effect

1) Vague feedback When a manager isn’t ‘bought’ into the process, he may be tempted to rush through and simply give some general feedback. Vague feedback doesn’t help an employee to improve or to know what they did well so they can repeat that

It’s easy to let one recent mistake or success cloud the entire review process. While it’s natural to discuss the most recent events, your business is aiming to review performance for the entire year in an appraisal. 3) No follow-up plan

Performance review isn’t a mere checklist of giving employee a rating

Components of Performance Appraisal

Once the appraisal is done, it is often put into the employee’s file and forgotten about until next year. If each appraisal isn’t tied in to the business or company’s strategic goals, it’s a waste of time for your business. 4) Reviewing Tasks and not Behaviours The number one reason performance appraisals fail is because they only measure skills to do the job, and not abilities that are needed for the job. In other words, having the keen ability to interface with customers and peers in an effective and emotionally intelligent way which is and should be part of all types of jobs, is not measured. A manager’s inability or perhaps lack of judgmental experience to conduct a fair and honest assessment of an employee could come back to haunt an organisation in the longer-term. Therefore, training supervisors and managers on how to conduct a well-prepared, effective appraisal is important. One key to conducting effective performance appraisals is consistency Our rigorous 2-day training module delivered in-class and over-theweb with comprehensive industry standard tools and video aids will help make effectiveness of the process better. Following are

January 2016

broad steps that managers need to keep in mind during the performance appraisal they conduct.

also lessens the likelihood of a confrontation. Surprises create confrontations. Communication prevents them.

Step One: Preparation

Step Three: Reviewing documents

The key to success in any appraisal is preparation. In this case, preparation means sitting down and creating objectives for the performance period. Managers need to ensure that people know what’s expected of them if we ever expect them to achieve it. If people don’t know where they’re going with a roadmap, how can we ever expect them to get there? Step Two: Assessment A manager’s critical responsibility is assessing and giving timely feedback to teammembers on their performance. There are many benefits to doing this. Feedback on performance that is given as soon as possible has proven to be the most effective. It’s not fair or effective to tell someone how he is not doing well or did well weeks after the job is done. Let people know quickly so they can either address the error or replicate the success. Continuous assessment and feedback is the key to ensuring that there are no surprises, which of course

Before you actually do sit down with the employee, review all your documentation from the year. Take a look again at the objectives that you and the employee agreed to and documented at the beginning of the year. Look for any recommendations or letters you may have received from clients and peers during the year. It’s another great technique for reducing or eliminating surprises. Step Four: Appropriate setting Make sure that you have an appropriate setting in which to deliver the appraisal. The most commonly used location, a manager’s office, is often the worst place. It’s not neutral territory and no matter how much rapport-building you do or how long you’ve worked with the employee, it’s still “your turf.” A conference room is often best, but if that’s not available, find some other meeting room. Step Five: Deliver it clearly

Deliver the appraisal in simple language. Don’t use code or jargons, and don’t mince words. Don’t beat around the bush even if the appraisal is not as positive as the employee might have hoped. Step Six: Encouragement At the conclusion of the performance appraisal meeting, which also marks the end of one performance appraisal cycle and the beginning of the next, your job is to encourage. You want to motivate the employee to continue doing that which he does well and to improve in the areas where there is room for growth. This is the best way to make these meetings productive and positive. Even if the person’s appraisal has not been as high as he might have hoped, remind the employee that he is still valued and that you’ll support him in his development. I look forward to hear from you at pavan@ittige.com on how you are creating an appraisal culture within your organisation by making performance review an enjoyable and a rewarding process for managers and employees. Fundamental Drivers of Competitiveness are yet to Grow Indeed, Modi’s Make in India concept last year made some impact on manufacturing. But, India still has a long way to go when it comes to ease of doing business and though Modi’s visit to different countries will sure fetch some business in India, but to become numero uno in manufacturing, we should look into the much deeper side; the existing discrepancies between the shown picture and the real one!

Haresh K. Sippy Managing Director, TEMA India Mr. Haresh K. Sippy is currently the Managing Director of TEMA India and is a pioneer in design technology and fabrication methodology in the field of process equipment manufacturing. He is a visionary leader with strong business acumen to identify small opportunities that could have the potential for tremendous business growth. Mr. Sippy founded TEMA India Limited in 1984 and quickly scaled up the company to become one of the largest manufacturers of Shell-&-Tube Heat Exchangers in India. He also holds Indian patent for ‘shrink ring’ technology pertaining to Screw Plug Heat Exchangers and is credited to turn the company into a global supplier of heat exchangers.

India in Doing Business category: Much has been said about India improving its ‘Ease of Doing Business’ rankings by 12 points to 130 from 142. In an economy where investment was stagnant for over four years it can hardly be termed as good news. For

68

www.martupdate.com

the government which has set the target of moving to the top 50 positions in terms of ease of doing business in about three years, this is perhaps a case of too little too late. In terms of the positive effects of the report for Indian economy it signals the

improving business climate in the country. This ranking would ease the foreign direct investment in India and would also attract foreign businesses to move their business to India. Government Initiatives: If we analyze the report published by WEF, India has

done best in complex areas such as innovation and business sophistication while faring poorly in the more basic and more fundamental drivers of competitiveness such as health and primary education, higher education and training, technological readiness and labour market efficiencies

January 2016

among others. The central government has already started work in order to make country further competitive. The Make in India initiative is a step towards increasing the manufacturing base in country so as to take advantage of India’s cheap labour. Another government initiative Skill India aims to provide essential employment skills to help India’s young and vibrant workforce and in turn raise the productivity. This will not only improve competitiveness but will also help to move the country up the value chain so as to ensure more solid and stable growth. The government needs to work on easing the prevailing labour market rigidities which obstruct the growth of labour-intensive industries. The archaic labour laws do not provide any flexibility to praise or reprimand the employees and are a hindrance to the growth of employment. “Make in India” in the manufacturing level: The government’s “Make in India” initiative aims to increase the share of manufacturing to 25% of GDP by 2022 from the current 12%. This is expected to result in the creation of 100 million jobs and drive social upliftment of unemployed youths. However, with no clarity on when GST will be implemented, one cannot expect large manufacturing investments to flow into India. There are still too many hindrances to conduct business in India.

January 2016

With a virtual stagnation from 2010 to 2014, manufacturing in India continues to be crippled by issues such as shortage of coal, inability to acquire land and tax disputes. While the provisions under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2013 are expected to drastically decrease time and cost to acquire land, it is necessary to rationalize the act and set up land banks that would assist projects involving acquisition of large land parcels. When developed countries like the United States are renewing focus on reviving manufacturing, “Make in India” is not just an initiative but a national imperative that is needed to keep pace with global growth. Transforming this vision to reality requires a concrete roadmap that will support not just the manufacturing of today, but also of the future. To ensure the country’s place as a global manufacturing powerhouse, the government, industry and civil society must work together to restore investor and public confidence in “Make in India”. Skill Development & Indian SMEs: 19 million students are enrolled in high schools and 10 million students in pre-graduate degree courses across India annually while 2.1 million graduates and 0.3 million postgraduates pass out of India’s non-engineering colleges every year. According to a recent UN report India has the youngest

population in the world with over 365 million people between 10-24 years. But despite the large pool of talent that is passing out every year, only 30% are employable; and the numbers are even worse in some sectors. The paradox of skill development is such that we are in a situation where students do not find enough jobs, and employers do not find enough employees. In order to fix the situation, we need to overhaul our education policies such that they, in addition to providing technical education, should also help the students to gain employability skills which help the students to become more productive and skilled. In this regard, companies should come forward and start their own initiatives towards skill development. For an instance we at TEMA have started “Learn While Earning” initiative to encourage students to undergo one year in-plant training to hone skills specific to the industry of choice and function. Start-ups & Indian Youth: According to the recent reports published by The Economic Times the current placement season at country’s premier engineering collages have seen new surge in hiring from the startups. Several IITs such as Delhi, Varanasi, Bombay, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee, have reported 100% increase in the number of startups coming to recruit. In my opinion, graduates are not hesitant to join new startup companies as they offer good profiles and an equivalent pay

package. However, recent hire and fire type strategies employed by some start ups may make job seeking youths to pursue for relatively stable MNC jobs. Foreign Investments vs. Indian entrepreneurs: I believe that in the long run encouraging and sustaining Indian entrepreneurs is a more pragmatic strategy. But currently we need investment and technology support and hence inviting foreign firms to invest in India makes sense. The encouragement of Indian entrepreneurs should be a parallel activity. The author Mr Haresh Sippy is currently the Managing Director of TEMA India and is a pioneer in design technology and fabrication methodology in the field of process equipment manufacturing. Increased Productivity & Process Reliability at MTU Aero Engines due to Safe-Lock Due to the positive form and frictional clamping system made by HAIMER, MTU Aero Engines in Munich was able to increase the reliability in the process of machining difficultto-cut materials while also decreasing their processing times.

MTU Aero Engines is Germany’s leading engine manufacturer and an established global player in the industry. The company engages in the design, development, manufacturing and support of commercial and military aircraft engines in all thrust and power categories and stationary gas turbines. Due to HAIMER‘s patented Safe-Lock™pull out protection system, MTU was able to optimize their machining process regarding the

production of structural frames and castings. Jet engines are high-tech products. In their production, innovative technologies and processes are used. To keep current technologically, MTU develops innovative manufacturing strategies, and if necessary obtains additional external expertise. So was the case when they contacted HAIMER, the tool holding specialists from Igenhausen,

Germany, to help optimize the demanding machining process of manufacturing frames and castings. Difficult-to-machine materials, high-quality components and the high degree of automation at MTU require an absolutely smooth and reliable machining process to maintain the highest levels of quality. In order to ensure this consistency and to control the high axial cutting forces during machining, MTU

decided to implement the Safe-Lock™ pull out protection system by HAIMER. In the HAIMER Safe-Lock™ system, special drive keys in the tool holder and grooves in the tool shank prevent the cutting tool from spinning during extreme machining, thus preventing tool pull out from the chuck. In addition to the frictional clamping forces of the selected clamping system, the cutting tool is held using

Due to Safe-Lock™-shrink fit chucks and the shrink fit machine Power Clamp Premium NG from HAIMER, Alexander Steurer, Senior Manager NC-Programming Stator Components at MTU, accomplishes heavy duty machining of high-temperature materials with excellent runout accuracy and maximum pull out protection.

positive form locking in the tool holder through the constructive design of the Safe-Lock™ system. Alexander Steurer, Senior Manager NC-Programming Stator Components at MTU Aero Engines AG in Munich, explains the decision for the HAIMER system: “Through the introduction of Safe-Lock™ and the shrinking technology from HAIMER, we can guarantee process reliability even with milling challenging high temperature materials. This is a prerequisite to guarantee smooth processing during manufacturing of frames and castings, given our high degree of automation.“ The combination of pullout protection and highest concentricity of the Safe-Lock™ system leads to low vibration and as a result, a very stable machining process. Due to the increased cutting depths and feeds, the metal removal rate can be increased significantly. And thanks to the improved runout accuracy of HAIMER shrink fit chucks, tool life is improved by up to 50%. The benefits of less than 3 µm runout, that the symmetrical Safe-Lock™ design provides, coupled with optimum balance and the possibility for easy length presetting were substantial reasons for MTU to switch to the HAIMER system instead of continuing to use Whistle Notch or Weldon tooling systems. While these other systems do in fact prevent tool pull out, both are unsymmetrical by design, hence providing insufficient runout and balance accuracy.

January 2016

Through the use of a set screw the cutting tool is wedged against the opposite wall of the clamping bore. The holder pushes the cutting tool off center and thereby leads to excessive amounts of runout. Any such design also allows for significant radial play between the tool shank and the bore itself. That way the aforementioned holders actually push the cutting tool off center, thereby inducing excessive amounts of runout. Hans Drahtmüller, Line Manager Machining Stator Components at MTU in Munich, explains the resulting problems: “Due to the deteriorated runout, the tool life could not be fully realized. As a result, the tools with a Weldon flat had to be exchanged early. With SafeLock™ regrinding could be automated due to the cylindrical form of the system, as the cutting tools no longer have to be inserted manually into the grinding machine compared to Weldon flat tooling. This saves tool costs!“ Easy and quick tool change In addition to productivity improvements in the machining process, time is also saved outside of the machine via extremely fast and easy tool changes. HAIMER Power Clamp Premium NG, the high end shrink fit machine MTU is using currently, offers an ergonomic working space, perfect handling and linear guided cooling bodies with temperature monitoring for maximum safety. Presetting the tool length to exactly 0.02 mm (e.g. for sister tools) can optionally be integrated into this machine. The intelligent New Generation (NG) coil is

adjustable. With one turn, you can set the coil to the size of the shrink fit chuck both in length and diameter. This new system obsoletes the former interchangeable ferrite stop disks, which were always at risk of breaking during change overs. Thanks to the multiple patented HAIMER technology, the shrink fit chuck is only heated in areas where it is necessary. This way the process of both heating and cooling the tool holders is much faster. During the cooling process different sized cooling bodies shorten the cooling time and create a gentle, even and clean cooling effect. The cooling bodies ride on linear guides, so that the cutting edges are always protected from collision

HAIMER shrinking technology During modern high-end milling operations systems with Weldon shanks reach their limits because of their insufficient runout accuracy.

During operations with a high rpm even the smallest differences can lead to poor results, tool and spindle wear and can reduce the surface quality. CASE STUDY

It’s not a Cable, It’s an Antenna! Why would someone want a cable that acts like an antenna? After all, much research and development has gone into improving cable shields precisely to prevent this! As it turns out, there are several conditions in industrial communication systems where using a radiating cable as an antenna offers major benefits. The most common cases are for communicating to equipment moving along a track, replacing slip rings in rotating equipment, and providing a clear radio frequency (RF) signal where obstructions or plant-floor layout prevent a clear “Line-of-Sight” to transmit from a traditional antenna. What is a Radiating Cable? A radiating cable is a long, flexible antenna with slots to radiate RF signals that can be installed around corners, along monorail systems and through tunnels to propagate wireless data signals in situations that are tough or impossible for traditional antennas. Since the radiating cable antenna can be mounted within inches of where the signal needs to be received, it isolates the wireless signal from going to other machines that may be on the plant floor. And, the cable comes in multiple lengths to meet the needs of most applications.

In a typical coaxial cable, a metallic shield wrapped around the cable isolates the signals transmitted on the cable from the electromagnetic waves in the air around the cable. This helps to maintain a strong signal on the cable, and prevents that signal from creating interference with RF equipment nearby. Without the shield, the cable would act like an antenna, transmitting the signal it carries into the air, and receiving radio waves from other RF devices. For those who remember analog cable TV, we experienced this phenomenon when we saw “ghost” images on certain channels. Instead

of just receiving the video signal sent from the cable company along the coaxial cable, we were also receiving that channel’s over-theair broadcast of the same video signal as picked up by the coaxial cable working like an antenna. This was an unintentional use of radiating cable, and produced undesirable results. The same principle that gave us blurry television pictures back then is used to make a cable that intentionally radiates signals. This is called a radiating cable, or leaky feeder cable. The difference between radiating cable and poorly shielded TV cables is that the shield on a radiating

cable is designed with exacting slots that allow for the transmission of signals at a specific frequency. In this way, these cables are tuned to the RF equipment to which they are connected. The cable’s shield still works to block unwanted RF, but will allow signals of the correct frequency to emit from, and be received by the cable inside. That makes a radiating cable act just like an antenna. Placing RF Signals Precisely in Crowded Plants Another benefit of using radiating cables comes from the ability to place RF power very precisely. The use of wireless communication

equipment in factories is growing rapidly, which means that factory floors are becoming crowded with radio waves on all the common frequencies. For machine builders who need to use wireless, this creates a real problem. With a radiating cable solution, new machines can co-exist within the crowded plant RF space without adding to the cacophony. This is because radiating cable emits RF in one direction, and only needs as much power as it takes to link with another antenna at a relatively fixed distance. While the plant’s general wi-fi network is screaming to everyone who will listen, the equipment on the new machine can operate at a whisper. This benefit is especially important in rotating machinery which traditionally used slip rings to conduct communication signals from I/O on the moving part of the machine to a controller on the fixed part. Slip rings are expensive to install, require regular maintenance, and even still suffer from poor communication speeds due to noise on the rings and in the pick-ups that ride on the rings. Traditional wireless solutions can work, but often the motion of the machine will obstruct the wireless link, requiring higher gain antennas that result in greater RF “noise pollution.” Radiating cable is used in these applications to provide a clear, consistent path to the rotating antenna, without interfering with other nearby wireless systems. Flexibility Radiating cable also benefits from its inherent flexibility. Since it is a cable, it can follow almost any path to provide wireless signal in places where antennas just can reach. One of the early applications for radiating cable was to enable two-way radio

January 2016

connectivity for emergency workers inside highway and rail tunnels. In the industrial setting, there are many hardto-reach places, whether those are actual tunnels or “RF tunnels” created by obstructions. An example of that would be a warehouse, where the metal racks and merchandise on those racks can cause obstruction and reflection issues for a traditional antenna. Radiating cable can be installed along the aisle ways to provide a strong signal just where it’s needed. Summary For certain industrial communication challenges, radiating cable offers unique advantages. Radiating cable provides consistent data rates over a long distance, can be shaped to provide signal in difficult-to-reach environments, and reduces plant RF congestion by constraining its RF signal to the exact area where it’s needed. These benefits are especially valuable in applications where machines move along a pre-defined path, where the terrain of a facility is particularly difficult to reach with broad coverage, and where signals on rotating equipment are otherwise transmitted through slip rings. Care must be taken in selecting and installing the components of a radiating cable solution. However, with a bit of preparation and advice from an experienced industrial RF vendor, a radiating cable system can provide troublefree communications for your toughest applications.

temperature fluctuations. Impressive DDS600 stage performance made possible by Renishaw’s TONiC encoder system includes: minimum 100 nm step-size, ±0.25 μm bidirectional repeatability and a maximum speed of 0.4 m/s. During the design process for the MLS203 X-Y fast scanning stage, Thorlabs again used in-house testing to evaluate encoder performance. When choosing an appropriate position feedback system to be deployed within the MLS203, a potential concern was the risk of sample spillage and the effect this would have upon position control. The dirt immunity performance of a number of competing encoder products was evaluated by the application of isopropyl alcohol (IPA), as a liquid contaminant, and common salt, in place of debris, to the encoder scales. Testing showed that Renishaw’s TONiC encoder system outperformed competing encoder products. This qualitative result allowed Thorlabs to determine that the

TONiC encoder would not be susceptible to performance degradation as a result of foreseeable contamination.

MLS203 X-Y fast scanning stages are equipped with a 20 nm version of the TONiC RGSZ encoder system on both X and Y axes of 110 mm and 75 mm, respectively. The MLS203 measures just 260 mm (L) x 230 mm (W) x 31 mm (H) and uses the same linear motor technology as the DDS600. In addition to criteria outlined for the linear stage, calibration is an essential operation that completes readhead set-up during final installation, with the optimum incremental and reference mark settings stored in the readhead’s non-volatile memory. Integral LEDs on TONiC’s readhead and interface allow optimum set-up and system diagnosis that further simplify installation during manufacture and servicing with particular benefit for multi-axis machines. Omron Accentuates ‘Total Traceability’ as a Key Essential for Automotive Manufacturing Process Reiterating its contribution towards the automotive sectorone of the main drivers of manufacturing growth in India – Omron Automation underlines the role of ‘Total Traceability’ as a futuristic technology set to bring in significant advancements in the factory automation domain. The insight was shared by Mr. Sameer Gandhi, MD, Omron Automation India at the CII Industrial Automation Summit -2015 held at Gurgaon. Speaking at the summit, Mr. Gandhi said, “Total Traceability is the ability to trace & verify the history, location, or application of an item by means of documented recorded identification. Considering one defective product can bring humongous loss and setbacks to the credibility of a brand, the solution holds a lot of importance to ensure zero -defects manufacturing system. This

attains more significance for the automotive industry where assembling of multiple complex components needs constant checking at every step and product-recalls are witnessed quite often.” Explaining more about the practical applications of Traceability solutions provided by Omron for the automotive sector, Mr. Gandhi further explained, “For example, in a brake assembly (which has multiple parts), a piston ring assembly or a ball-bearing assembly- the entire assembly can be checked for visual completeness and quality including dimensions by an OMRON vision system. It not only identifies whether the quality is acceptable or not but also can store the images for future analysis. Omron’s Programmable Logic Controller portfolio enables Big Data

“With the impetus provided by Make in India, the scenario is quite optimistic. Omron is one of the leading players in the Industrial Automation sector across the globe and is striving to fortify its position as ‘enablers of Make in India’ initiative by providing cutting edge solutions for the manufacturing sector.”

Sameer Gandhi Managing Director, Omron Automation India management of these images collated with parameters ensuring its real time availability for the people on the manufacturing line who see many possibilities to use this data - for statistical analysis, quality control, quick identification of faulty parts, managing & tracing loss of components while processing from one plan to another - to name just a few.”

Not only automotive, the technology has immense potential in other sectors too such as FMCG, Pharmaceuticals, Digital Equipment manufacturing including OEMs & Part Suppliers who have to share their production data to the manufacturers in real time. Companies adopting traceability can not only actively participate in developing a sustainable and safe production process but also witness significant growth in their profit.

Safe retraction without loops: a new energy supply system from igus Retraction system for e-chains on industrial robots enables guiding of supply hoses for rivets and screws The motion plastics specialist igus has developed a lightweight and cost-effective concept for the automatic retraction of energy chains allowing further advances in robotics. Besides carrying energy, data and media cables, industrial robots nowadays also frequently carry supply hosesfor rivets or screws. The new triflex RSE system prevents looping of the energy chain, allowing these materials to be safely supplied to the end of the robot arm. The triflex R series has been designed by igus specifically for highly dynamic industrial robotic applications and as a multi-axis energy chain it can move in all directions in space. The universal triflex chains made from high-performance plastics work in even the most demanding industrial environments, are easy to install and can quickly be filled with cables from the outside. They also have high tensile and torsion strength. “However,

since nowadays it is not only just electrical and pneumatic cables that are conducted on the robot, but also often supply hoses for bolts, rivets or screws, tight bends or hanging loops can sometimes cause problems,” says Jörg Ottersbach, industry manager for robotics at igus. “Any reduction in the minimum allowable bend radius of the supply hoses can lead to a fault, reducing the efficiency of the process. - In the worst case a rivet or a screw gets stuck in the supply hose, which then leads to a plant standstill.” With its linear retraction of the e-chain, the triflex RSE retraction system offers an efficient and cost-effective solution that requires no curve, spring rods or deflecting rollers. Sleek design with direct control on the robot The extremely light system is based on the proven lubrication and maintenance

free drylin linear guide from igus, where a moving carriage transports the chain on a retraction distance of up to 600 millimetres. Elastic cords pull back the extended chain automatically. Thus the looping of the energy chain is prevented. In this way the service life can be significantly increased. The self-guiding retraction system is designed for the enclosed or snap open triflex chain versions TRC, TRE and TRCF in sizes from 60 to 125 millimetres in diameter. They are retained by means of a mounting bracket and a glide-through bracket on the system, which in turn can be easily fitted to a variety of robot types. Since the triflex RSE directly guides

and controls the e-chain on the robot and no other deflections are needed, the required length of the cable and chain is reduced. For this reason triflex RSE is not only space-saving and light, but is also a costeffective solution. CSR Ideation workshop by Rotary Club With an objective of collaborative and participative approach with the corporate sector, Rotary Bangalore Whitefield Central (RBWC) organised a CSR Ideation Workshop on 12th December 2015 at Hotel Premier Inn, Whitefield, Bangalore. This was aimed at generating ideas for implementation of CSR activities, accomplish a balance between the actual needs of the society and the ‘act of giving’ from Rotary. The concept of an Ideation Workshop was first conceived in June 2015, when Rtn. Manoj Kabre, Chairman – CSR Committee for RBWC, discussed this with two CSR experts from corporates – Ms.Sheela Kedarinath from PwC and Mr.Deepak Prabhu from Cognizant. The objective was to make a first hand assessment of the “pain points” from the experts who are working in the field of CSR as a profession. CSR is an emotional act and needs internal creativity and inspiration – it is not something mechanical. Upon an initial discussion, it was realized that this subject calls for a collective brainstorming. This is where a need of a structured preparation and planning came in. A structured plan

was made and executed with regular follow-up. Under the leadership of RBWC President Rtn.R G Bhat, a core committee was formed at the Club which took leadership in organising this event. The format of the event was finalized to be in the form of an Ideation workshop wherein facilitate a collaborative brainstorming. There were six subjects identified for Ideation - Health and Hygiene, Environment & Ecology, Water & Sanitation, Literacy, Skill Development and Inclusivity - Differently abled. An online registration link for the event was uploaded at the website of RBWC www.rotarybwc.org. CSR representatives from various corporates were identified and registered for the event in advance. The format of the workshop called for a subject matter expert for each of the six subjects identified for the CSR workshop, to accompany a group of 3 CSR representatives. This enabled the group to do the right brainstorming and come up with an action plan document based on the guidelines given by the Rotary CSR team.

There were a total of 18 CSR representatives and 5 subject matter experts who participated in the Ideation workshop that was conducted for 45 minutes. The entire group was divided into 6 teams and each team was allowed to brainstorm for this time period to accomplish Ideation. This was followed by a presentation as per preconceived format by the leader of each group that was attended by about 60 members including the visitors from various corporates and Rotary members. Rotary District officials Rtn.Vedhgiri, Rtn.

Abhishek Ranjan and Rtn.Kishor Jagirdar attended the event, and expressed satisfaction and appreciation to the organisers and the Club. Subsequent to this Ideation workshop, RBWC will now plan for Implementation of all the action points that have been identified as a result of this workshop. This will need a partnership of corporates in a participative and collaborative manner, so as to address the needs identified by the group.

HARTING infrastructure box: Keeping the heart of Industrie 4.0 ticking

HARTING presented the highly integrated HARTING Infrastructure Box at SPS IPC Drives. The HARTING Technology Group presented the innovative, highly integrated Infrastructure Box at the SPS IPC Drives trade fair in Nurnberg . The Infrastructure Box ensures availability and establishes flexibility with the optimal efficiency of modularly constructed Smart Factories for Industrie 4.0. High availability operation of the Smart Factory modular system is not possible without diagnosis and active performance management. Identification, monitoring and automatic module docking/ undocking are crucial for the availability. An integrated human-machine interface (HMI) visualizes these new Infrastructure Box functions in a way that is even simpler - and consequently even more user friendly. The HARTING Infrastructure Box offers constant monitoring of all of the system’s lifelines. The reconfiguration and expansion, including during operation, is only guaranteed by making the system pluggable with Han-Modular® and selective operation startup. “This allows the Infrastructure Box to act as a link in the Industrie 4.0

architecture, and keeps the system’s heart ticking, so to speak,” explains Andreas Huhman, Strategy Consultant Connectivity & Networks, at HARTING. Thanks to active data and energy management, maximum performance is achievable in connection with minimum resources. Power management (multiple feed-in) and bandwidth management of the data (real-time, safety) have been highly integrated into the HARTING Infrastructure Box. Given the clear commitment to this new Smart Factory backbone in the form of a device, instead of a switch cabinet add-on, the world’s smallest infrastructure box for Smart Factories has been successfully installed. You will encounter the compact unit as part of the HAII4YOU system (the HARTING Smart Factory), and also in the SmartFactoryKL. Both Smart Factories showcased again at SPS IPC Drives, delivered a live demonstration of the advantages of a powerful infrastructure. For more details visit www.HARTING.in

THE LAST LEAF Dear Readers, Even as expectations changed in India, and as political problems became more salient for the Modi government, the Indian economy chugged ahead to become the world’s fastest-growing major economy, growing at 7.4% in the third quarter of 2015, overtaking China. It also became the world’s top foreign direct investment destination, according to the Financial Times, as announced FDI commitments to India surged to $31 billion in the first half of 2015. Those figures more than double India’s FDI levels from the first half of 2014. In fact, as per the recent statement of our Minister of State for Finance, if we grow at 7 per cent, we will double our economy in a decade. We are going to go from USD 2 trillion economy to USD 4 trillion economy, if the rupee strengthens, to may be USD 5 trillion economy. OK Play India, the plastic auto components maker, today announced its foray into the e-rickshaw segment, with the launch of its the E-Raaja priced at Rs 1.15-1.25 lakh (inclusive of taxes, Delhi). The company plans to produce the e-rickshaws from its two manufacturing units - one in Sohna (Haryana) to cater to the North Indian market and the second one in Ranipet ( Tamil Nadu) to cater to South India. It is making an initial investment of Rs 40 crore. There is a unique, life-changing socio-commercial project that has been put together by M&M in collaboration with the Minda Group, one of its key suppliers. During one of his round at his plant in Dresden in Germany, when Ashok Minda, chairman of the auto component major, realised that sub-assemblies were being transformed into full assembly units by the inmates of a particular jail. Some months later, at a dinner with Hemant Sikka, chief purchase officer, M&M, a similar idea was mooted. This is today slowly transforming the lives of some 30-odd inmates of Yerwada Jail in Pune. (Courtesy : economictimes.indiatimes.com) Working exoskeletons have the potential to revolutionaize manufacturing across the globe. Mr.Hiromichi Fujimoto, founded ActiveLink 12 years ago, the physical fulfillment of a childhood dream. Before then, he had worked as an engineer for decades for Panasonic, to whom he proposed his exoskeleton idea. Exoskeletons are devices (attachments) that look like backpacks and act like weight belts, alleviating all stress from the waist and hips when lifting heavy objects. They’re designed to lessen the burden, not make you stronger — sort of like a technological steroid — and they seem perfect for factories. For instance, there’s a power arm prototype loaded with three motors and a sensor that can measure your magnitude and force. It can lift 65 pounds with just a thumb and one or two fingers. There is another one that is called the Power Effector, whose arms extend close to seven feet and can lift more than 650 pounds, and its height allows it to move over piles. The company plans to roll these products out in Japan, where you can rent one for as little as $420 per month, before any overseas expansion. ActiveLink, which was provided with the capital by Panasonic, has been profitable for the last six years, thanks to selling power-assist technology for research purposes, and for a series of R&D contract work. Your feedback will be useful to us to better inform our readers about a better tomorrow. Till then, Happy Technology ! Manoj Kabre Member, Editorial Advisory Board
